TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA YARIS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE CONTACT APPLIED THE BRAKE PEDAL REPEATEDLY AND THERE WAS AN EXTREME DELAYED RESPONSE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOUR TIMES FOR THE FAILURE AND ON EACH OCCASION, A LUBE APPLICATION WAS APPLIED TO THE REAR BRAKES. ADDITIONALLY, THE PARKING BRAKE WOULD NOT FUNCTION UPON ENGAGING. THE FAILURE PERSISTED AND THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE 75,000.
I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK AND I NOTICED THE LIGHT CAME ON FOR MY AIRBAG. I CHECKED THE MANUAL AND IT SAID TO BRING IT IN TO THE SERVICE CENTER IMMEDIATELY. I CALLED AND MADE AN APPOINTMENT AND I WAS TOLD THE SPIRAL CABLE WAS BAD. I NOTICED OTHER PEOPLE HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM SO I THINK THIS IS A PART THAT SHOULD BE RECALLED. *TR
ON 2/21/13 I WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE IN A HOSPITAL UNDERGROUND GARAGE. I WAS ABOUT 3 FEET FROM A CONCRETE WALL WHEN I SUDDENLY ACCELERATED HITTING THE WALL. I HAD MY SEAT BELT ON. THE AIRBAG WAS DEPLOYED HITTING ME IN THE FACE. THE ENTIRE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED,. I WAS EXTRACTED FROM THE VEHICLE BY THE FIRE DEPT. AND EMS AND TAKEN BY AMBULANCE TO THE HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOM. THERE X-RAYS OF MY SPINE WERE TAKEN. I HAD NO SPINAL FRACTURES SO I WAS DISCHARGED A FEW HOURS LATER. I SUFFERED SEVERE HEADACHES AND BODY ACHES FOR 3 WEEKS. MY GLASSES WERE BENT OUT OF SHAPE FROM THE AIRBAG HITTING THEM.THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DRIVABLE AND WAS TOWED TO THE BODY SHOP. I PICKED UP THE CAR ON 3/13/13 AFTER MULTIPLE REPAIRS WERE DONE INCLUDING REPLACING THE FRONT BUMPERS, HEADLIGHTS, AIRBAG, SEATBELT, PULLING THE FRAME BACK INTO CORRECT POSITION ETC. THIS COST $6200. ON 3/14/13, AFTER A CALL TO THE TOYOTA HOME OFFICE. I MET AN ENGINEER AT TOYOTA OF NASHUA WHERE HE UNDERWENT AN INSPECTION OF THE BLACK BOX AND A CHECK OF THE RECORDING OF THE AIRBAG ECU. THE 6 PAGE REPORT THAT HE GAVE ME INDICATED THAT NO DATA WAS RECOVERED AND NO EVENTS HAD OCCURRED. I AM PUZZLED HOW THAT CAN BE AS THE AIRBAG WAS DEPLOYED. I AM NOW LEFT WITH A VEHICLE THAT WAS IN PERFECT SHAPE BEFORE THE CRASH AND HAS NOW LOST A GREAT DEAL OF THE TRADE IN VALUE. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE IT BECAUSE NO ONE CAN TELL ME THAT THE VEHICLE IS SAFE AND WILL NOT UNDERGO ANOTHER UNINTENDED ACCELERATION AS I EXPERIENCED ON 2/21.AT THE TIME OF THE CRASH, I DROPPED MY CELL PHONE AND WHEN I RETRIEVED IT FROM THE FLOOR MAT I NOTICED THAT THE FLOOR MAT WAS NOT HINDERING THE ACCELERATOR AND WAS PERFECTLY FLAT. COINCIDENTLY, ON 3/7/13, I WAS NOTIFIED THAT MY CAR IS ENROLLED IN A CLASS ACTION SUIT AGAINST TOYOTA RE: ETCS BEING DEFECTIVE WHICH MAY CAUSE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. *TR
BRAKE AND ABS LIGHTS ON AND TOYOTA KNEW THIS WAS CAUSED BY SPEED SENSOR CORROSION. WHICH DISABLED THE ABS SYSTEM. CALLED THE DEALER BUT THEY ASKED ME TO CALL TOYOTA. I CALLED TOYOTA, THEY SAID PROBLEMS WERE NOT THE DEFECT AND REFUSED TO PROVIDE ANY SOLUTIONS, ASKED ME TO DEALER FOR REPAIR. THE TOYOTA CASE NUMBER IS [XXX]. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA YARIS. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS SHE LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE DUE TO ICY ROADS. THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO A TELEPHONE POLE AND UPON IMPACT THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED CONTUSIONS TO HER CHEST, NECK AND ALSO TWO BLACK EYES. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DEEMED THE VEHICLE DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 98,000.
THE LIGHT ON THE AIR BAG IS ON AND IT WONT TURN OFF. TOYOTA ADVISE ME THAT IT MAY BE A SPIRAL CABLE AND THAT MY AIR BAG MIGHT NOT DEPLOY IN A CASE OF AN ACCIDENT. *TR
THERE IS A WELL-KNOWN DEFECT ON TOYOTA YARIS MODELS (USA MODEL YEARS 2007 TO PRESENT) THAT OCCASIONALLY IN COLD, SNOWY WEATHER, THE REAR ABS CONNECTOR WILL HAVE DEBRIS 'GUNK UP' THE CONNECTION, DISABLING THE ABS - OBVIOUSLY A VERY HUGE SAFETY ISSUE IN THE WINTER. THERE ARE MANY WELL-DOCUMENTED SITUATIONS OF THIS AND THREADS ON YARISWORLD.COM DATING FROM 2008 UNTIL TODAY (HTTP://WWW.YARISWORLD.COM/FORUMS/SHOWTHREAD.PHP?T=11533). THE FIX APPEARS TO BE STRAIGHTFORWARD AND INEXPENSIVE; HOWEVER TOYOTA HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL FOR THIS, HAS NO PERMANENT FIX FOR THE ISSUE, AND WILL NOT EVEN COMPLETE THE TEMPORARY FIX FOR OWNERS. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE AS THE SAFETY RISK IS LARGE. *TR
AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND STAYED ON, TOOK TO DEALERSHIP GOT DIAGNOSTIC AND IT IS THE AIR BAG COIL SPRING, NEEDS TO BE REPLACED, ADVISED THAT THE AIR BAGS MOST LIKELY WILL NOT DEPLOY IN A CRASH. COST TO REPAIR ESTIMATED AT $500, NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. TOYOTA SHOULD REPAIR FOR FREE, SHOULD NOT BE A PART THAT WEARS OUT. *TR
EXHAUST IS EXTREMELY LOUD ON YARIS DURING ACCELERATION AND CAUSES THE INTERIOR CABIN TO SMELL. I HAD A FRIEND LOOK AT THE EXHAUST FOR A LEAK AND ALL HE COULD FIND IS A SHREDDED GASKET. THE EXHAUST WAS IN EXCELLENT SHAPE AND SHOWED NO DAMAGE OR CORROSION. INTERNET SEARCHES HAVE REVEALED THAT THE GASKET ON THE 07 YARIS IS POORLY DESIGNED AND SEVERAL PEOPLE ARE AFFECTED BY THIS.
AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON AND STAYED ON. PER MANUAL TOOK TO DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS ($97). DIAGNOSED FAULTY SPIRAL CABLE WHICH WILL KEEP DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT AIRBAG FROM DEPLOYING AND MAY TURN OFF ENTIRE AIRBAG SYSTEM. COST TO REPLACE CABLE QUOTED AS $453. *TR

THE CONTACT STATE THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER TO HAVE NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 09V031000 (SEAT BELTS: FRONT: RETRACTOR) PERFORMED, HOWEVER THE REPAIRS FAILED TO REMEDY THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAIN SYSTEM AND THE AIR BAG LIGHT ILLUMINATED AFTER THE REPAIR. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE AIRBAG SENSOR CAME ON. THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP RAN A $130 DIAGNOSTIC THAT TOLD ME THE SPIRAL CABLE FOR THE AIRBAG SENSOR IS WORN OUT, BROKEN, OR FAULTY AND THAT IT WOULD BE A TOTAL OF $500 TO FIX IT. THEY SAID NO AIRBAGS IN THE VEHICLE WOULD OPERATE AS THEY SHOULD WHILST THAT LIGHT IS ON AND I'D NEED TO FIX IT ASAP. I DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO FIX THIS CURRENTLY AND NOW I DON'T FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE! HE TOLD ME THAT IT WAS EITHER THE TACOMA OR TUNDRA THAT HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM AND IT WAS A RECALL, BUT THAT THE YARIS WASN'T POPULAR ENOUGH TO HAVE ENOUGH ON THE ROAD TO CAUSE A RECALL, WHICH I THINK IS RIDICULOUS. THIS NEEDS TO BE EITHER A RECALL OR COVERED UNDER AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. *TR

THE CONTACT MERGED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHERE THE VEHICLE RESUMED NORMAL FUNCTION. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO BE DRIVEN TO THE CONTACT'S DESTINATION. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS FOUND THAT THE OXYGEN SENSOR HAD FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED ABOUT THE ISSUE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 94,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
STARTED CAR, AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON AFTER 30 SECONDS,(OR SO) HAS BEEN ON TO DATE. LOOKING AT ALL THE COMPLAINTS ON THE WEB, THERE SHOULD BE A SAFETY RECALL. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA YARIS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH, SMOKE EMITTED FROM THE DRIVER'S SIDE WINDOW. THE VEHICLE WAS MERGED ONTO ANOTHER STREET AND THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS NOTIFIED. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE AND REPORTED THAT IT WAS AN ELECTRICAL FIRE. THE DOOR PANEL WAS REMOVED BECAUSE ALL OF THE WIRES WERE MELTED. THIS CAUSED THE WINDOW TO REMAIN OPEN. A REPORT WAS AVAILABLE IF NEEDED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE DEALER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND STATED THAT THEY WOULD GET IN TOUCH WITH THE CONTACT. THE VEHICLE WAS STILL DRIVABLE. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000.
THE AIRBAG LIGHT HAS BEEN LIT SINCE LAST YEAR ON MY YARIS. THE DEALER SAYS IT IS THE CLOCK SPRING IN THE STEERING WHEEL AND IS OUT OF WARRANTY SO THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE. I SEE MANY COMPLAINTS ON THE SAME ITEM. I COUNT OVER 25 COMPLAINTS. THE 2007 TOYOTA TACOMA HAD LESS COMPLAINTS FOR THE SAME PROBLEM AND THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL ON IT. AS A RESULT, THE CONTACT SUSTAINED INJURIES TO THE CHEST, ARMS AND FACE. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT BLINKED ON THE WENT OUT. NOW IT IS ON ALL THE TIME. TOYOTA DEALER SAYS IT IS A CLOCK SPRING IN THE STEERING COLUMN THAT HAS GONE BAD. THERE ARE MANY REPORTS OF THIS ONLINE BUT THEY REFUSE TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THEY JUST SAY THE AIRBAGS JUST WON'T GO OFF IN AN ACCIDENT. *TR

THE REASON I DECIDED TO SEND THIS REPORT IS BECAUSE I HAVE SEEN THIS PROBLEM WITH THE SAME TYPE OF VEHICLE BEFORE, I OWN A DRIVING SCHOOL WITH 4 TOYOTA YARIS FROM 2007-2009 AND HAD A PROBLEM WITH A BURN SMELL AND SMOKE COMING OUT FROM THE POWER SWITCH, WE TURN THE CAR OFF AND WHEN WE TOOK THE DOOR PANEL APART WE NOTICE THE POWER SWITCH HAD BURN. WE PURCHASE ANOTHER POWER SWITCH THINKING THAT WE DID NOT WANTED THE CAR CATCH A FIRE. NOW ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO WE EXPERIENCE THE SAME ISSUE WITH ANOTHER YARIS. AND THIS TIME THE FIRE WAS A BIT BIGGER THAN BEFORE. SINCE WE HAD TO TAKE THE DISCONNECT THE POWER SWITCH AND BLOW THE FIRE OUT OURSELVES. THIS PROBLEM COULD HAVE BEEN WORST SINCE THE POWER SWITCH IS SITTING ON A TYPE OF FOAM THAT IF IT CATCHES FIRE IT WILL EASY SPREAD AND HURT SOMEONE. IF I COULD PLEASE GET SOME INFORMATION IF TOYOTA WILL BE RECALLING THIS ISSUE. I DO NOT WANT TO SPEND ANOTHER $200 FOR A NEW POWER SWITCH. THANK YOU *TR

THE TEST RESULTS SHOWED A FAULTY SPIRAL CABLE IN THE AIR BAG, WHICH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT IF THE VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A CRASH THE AIR BAG MAY NOT DEPLOY. I WAS IN A 5 CAR ACCIDENT ON THE FREEWAY. A CAR HAD HIT ANOTHER CAR WHICH HAD HIT MY CAR REAR AND IN TURNED CAUSED ME TO HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME AND THEY IN TURN HIT ANOTHER CAR. MY AIR BAGS DID NOT GO OFF. I WANTED TO REPORT THIS FAILURE TO THE CAR MANUFACTURER. I CONTACTED TOYOTA AND THEIR REPRESENTATIVE SAID THAT THE AIR BAGS WOULD NOT GO OFF BECAUSE I HAD BEEN HIT IN THE REAR. HE HAD NO ANSWER WHY THE AIRBAGS STILL DID NOT OFF WHEN I HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. HE SENT ME A PAMPHLET ON HOW AIRBAGS WORKED. I HAVE NOT HEARD FROM TOYOTA AGAIN. *TR
I WAS DRIVING WITHIN THE CITY SPEED LIMIT (30-35 MPH) WHEN MY ABS LIGHT CAME ON AT NIGHT. I LIVE IN THE SOUTH, SO IT WAS WARM WEATHER. IT KEPT BLINKING OFF AND ON AT FIRST BUT THEN I NOTICED IT WOULD NOT GO OFF AT ALL. I LOOKED IN MY CAR MANUAL AND IT INDICATED THAT I SHOULD TAKE IT IMMEDIATELY TO MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. I TOOK IT ON TUESDAY MORNING (4/24/12) AND PAID $45 FOR A DIAGNOSTIC. THE TECHNICIAN TOLD ME THERE WAS A BAD SENSOR AND I WOULD NEED TO PAY ABOUT $700 TO REPLACE THE SENSOR, AND THE TOTAL COST FOR PARTS AND LABOR WAS $989.05 WITH TAX MINUS MY DIAGNOSTIC PRICE. I CANNOT AFFORD THIS AND WONDER WHY THEY WON'T FIX IT BECAUSE IT IS A MANUFACTURING PROBLEM. I FEEL THEY SHOULD REPLACE IT. AFTER SEARCHING ON THE INTERNET TO COMPARE PRICES, I HAVE DISCOVERED THAT MY CAR IS NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS ISSUE, WHICH INDICATES IT IS A MANUFACTURING ISSUE. I THINK SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE ABOUT IT. *TR

I CONTACTED TOYOTA HAWAII DURING THE FIRST WEEK OF FEBRUARY AND WAS TOLD THERE HAS NOT BEEN ANY FIX FOR THE PROBLEM AND THAT I SHOULD WAIT AND CALL BACK IN A WHILE. I WOULD THINK THAT THE SERIOUS NATURE OF THIS RECALL WOULD GET FASTER ACTION BY THE MANUFACTURE. JUST WANTED TO KNOW FROM YOU IF THIS SEEMS LIKE REASONABLE THINKING. *TR
ABS AND EMERGENCY BRAKE LIGHT INDICATORS TURNED ON AND STAYED ON. BROUGHT CAR INTO MECHANIC, TOLD CODE C0215 WAS SHOWN - REAR SPEED SENSOR LH CIRCUIT - AND THAT TOYOTA HAS ISSUED A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN (TSB) AS THIS IS APPARENTLY A COMMON PROBLEM FOR THE 2007-2008 YARIS. (FOR REFERENCE SEE: T-SB-0120-08) COST TO FIX BOTH RIGHT AND LEFT SENSORS (LEFT IS CURRENTLY FAILED, MECHANIC SAYS ACCORDING TO THE TSB IT IS LIKELY THE RIGHT SIDE WILL FAIL SOON AS WELL SO CONSIDER FIXING BOTH) IS APPROX $1600 !!! (THIS INCLUDES COST TO REPLACE THE SPEED SENSORS/HUBS, THE ABS WIRES, AND THE HUB BEARING/SENSOR ASSEMBLY). ACCORDING TO TSB "THE SEALING PERFORMANCE OF THE REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CONNECTORS HAS BEEN IMPROVED TO ADDRESS THIS CONDITION" - IF THIS IS THE CASE WHY IS THERE NOT A RECALL?? THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE - IF I DON'T PAY THE $1600 TO HAVE THIS FIXED, MY ANTI LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (WHICH I PAID EXTRA FOR WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR!) WON'T FUNCTION. *TR
I AM EXPERIENCING A CLUNKING NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE NOISE IS MOST OFTEN HEARD UNDER ACCELERATION OR DECELERATION. THE BOLTS THAT SECURE THE CONTROL ARMS TO THE SUB FRAME ARE CORRODING AND BREAKING OFF, CAUSING SEPARATION OF THE CONTROL ARM FROM THE SUB FRAME AND LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE CAR. *TR
I BROUGHT MY 2007 TOYOTA YARIS INTO THE DEALERSHIP TO GET THE BRAKES LOOKED AT AS I WAS HEARING A CLUNKING NOISE GOING OVER UNEVEN ROADS AT SLOW SPEEDS AND I WAS FEELING A STICKING WITH THE BRAKES. THE DEALERSHIP NOTIFIED ME THAT THE BRAKES WERE FINE BUT THAT A BOLT IN THE FRONT CROSS ARM OF THE SUSPENSION HAD RUSTED AND BROKEN OFF. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS WAS A DESIGN FLAW IN THE 2007-2011 YARIS AND THAT THERE WAS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN THAT ADVISED ON REPLACING THE WHOLE CROSSMEMBER WITH A NEW DESIGN. THE WARRANTY ONLY COVERED THE CAR UP TO 3 YEARS OR 36000 MILES BUT MY CAR IS 3.5 YEARS AND 53000 MILES. THE COST OF THE PARTS AND REPAIR WAS OVER $2500 AND SINCE IT WAS A SAFETY CONCERN I WAS NOT ALLOWED TO DRIVE THE CAR WITHOUT FIXING IT. THE DEALERSHIP CONTACTED TOYOTA, WHO THEN AGREED TO PAY FOR THE PARTS. I WAS STILL RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYING THE $848 IN LABOR TO REPAIR SOMETHING THAT TOYOTA HAD DESIGNED INCORRECTLY. I HAD TO PAY THE BILL IN ORDER TO GET MY CAR OUT BUT THE DEALERSHIP ENCOURAGED ME TO CONTINUE TO CONTACT TOYOTA DIRECTLY AS THEY AGREED THAT THIS WAS AN ISSUE THAT TOYOTA SHOULD RESOLVE. I CONTACTED TOYOTA USA AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY "TECHNICALLY" DIDN'T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING SINCE IT'S NOT A RECALL AND THAT BECAUSE THEY ALREADY PAID FOR THE PARTS, THAT WAS THE SAME AS ME "AGREEING" THAT THEY DID NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR THE LABOR. TOYOTA SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR FIXING PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH A DESIGN FLAW IN A MAJOR STRUCTURAL ELEMENT OF THE CAR. A BOLT SHOULDN'T RUST IN LESS THAN 4 YRS, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT'S A SAFETY CONCERN. I THINK THAT WITH TIME, MORE YARIS OWNERS WILL BEGIN TO EXPERIENCE THIS AND IT SHOULD BE LOOKED INTO FURTHER BEFORE SOMEONE IS HURT OR KILLED AS A RESULT OF THIS FAILURE. THE LIGHT OF "BRAKE" AND "ABS" ON TOGETHER WHEN DRIVING IN WINTER. THE CAR IS ONLY 50K MILES. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME TO DRIVE IN A LITTLE BIT SNOW. THE ABS WAS NEVER USED BEFORE. THE OPERATOR WAS DRIVING A 2007 TOYOTA YARIS (4-DOOR SEDAN) AROUND A SLIGHT TURN IN THE ROADWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 35 TO 40 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE ENCOUNTERED "BLACK ICE" AND LOST TRACTION. THE CAR BEGAN TO SLIDE AND SPIN, WHICH WAS IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWED BY A HEAD-ON COLLISION WITH THE HIGHWAY GUARD RAIL. THE VEHICLE WAS INSTANTLY RENDERED A TOTAL LOSS AND DAMAGE TO BOTH THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE (ENTIRE ENGINE COMPARTMENT) AND GUARD RAIL WERE VERY EXTENSIVE. I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK WHEN THE BATTERY LIGHT CAME ON WHEN I PULLED INTO MY DRIVE WAY. I SMELLED SOMETHING BURNING AND THERE WAS SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD OF MY 2007 YARIS. I POPPED THE HOOD AND THE ALTERNATOR WAS ON FIRE. I POURED WATER ON IT TO PUT IT OUT AND DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY. STORED DTCS OF P043E, P043F, P2401, P2402, AND P2419. INTERNET SEARCH REVELED EXISTING ISSUE IN TSB EG048-07 WHICH NOTES WATER ENTERS FILLER PIPE COVER, CONTAMINATES CANISTER FILTER, THEN DAMAGES THE EVAP PUMP LOCATED IN CHARCOAL CANISTER. REPAIR REQUIRES AN UPDATED FILLER COVER ($6), REPLACEMENT OF FILTER ($50), NEW CANISTER ($600), PLUS 0.5HR OF LABOR CHARGES. APPLICABLE WARRANTY IS 3YEAR/36000MILES. DURING REPAIR REPLACED FILLER COVER, FILTER, THEN CLEANED ENTIRE SYSTEM OF WATER. NOTE: THIS YARIS WAS ALREADY BUILT USING THE UPDATED FILLER COVER P/N. YARIS FAILED THE FOLLOWING TEST DRIVE DONE IN ATTEMPT TO AVOID EXPENSIVE CANISTER REPLACEMENT. FOLLOWED TOYOTA SERVICE MANUAL TO TROUBLESHOOT CANISTER WHICH LEAD TO PERMANENT DAMAGE. THREE BOLTS ATTACH THE PUMP VALVE TO THE CANISTER VIA PLASTIC THREADED INSERTS. THESE INSERTS STRIPPED INSIDE THE PLASTIC, RENDERING THE CANISTER UNUSABLE. REPLACING WITH NEW CANISTER AND RETESTING FOR REPAIR. THIS PORTION OF THE EMISSIONS SYSTEM IS RELATED TO A MANDATED REQUIREMENT. THIS FAILURE SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER THE LONGER TERM EMISSIONS WARRANTY PERIOD AND NOT THIS SHORTER TERM PERIOD. FAILURE OF A $6 COMPONENT RESULTING IN VICTIM FAILURES OF $650 IN ADDITIONAL COMPONENTS IS IRRITATING TO THE CONSUMER AND IRRESPONSIBLE OF THE MANUFACTURER. CUSTOMER HAS ALREADY NOTED THAT THIS EVENT WILL AFFECT (NEGATIVELY) FUTURE VEHICLE PURCHASE DECISIONS. NOTE: THIS FAILURE DOES NOT SEEM TO AFFECT MPG OR OPERATION BUT DOES ILLUMINATE THE CEL. RECURRENT ACCELERATOR PEDAL FAILURE (DRIVE BY WIRE) WITH CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WARNING. OCCASIONALLY, WHEN ACCELERATING, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AND THE PEDAL DEPRESSING ACTION INITIALLY HAS NO EFFECT FOR SEVERAL DEPRESSIONS AND THEN IT WORKS MINIMALLY. THE PROBLEM HAD BEEN DEVELOPING FOR ABOUT A WEEK. THERE SEEMED TO BE SOME CLUNKING IN THE FRONT END. WHEN I WOULD STOP, THE VEHICLE WOULD LURCH FORWARD A LITTLE. MY FIRST THOUGHT WAS THAT SOMETHING LIKE A BREAK PART OR TIRE WAS LOOSE FROM THE FRONT, PASSENGER SIDE. ON FRIDAY IS SEEMED WORSE AFTER PULLING IN TO A DRIVEWAY. I HAD THE PROBLEM DIAGNOSED AT THE DEALER. THEY SAID THE HEAD OF A BOLT ON THE LOWER CONTROL ARM HAD RUSTED/CORRODED/SHEERED OFF. THEIR ESTIMATED COST WAS ABOUT $650. THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF THE MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY. MY EXTENDED 120K MILE/ 96 MONTH WARRANTY COVERS UPPER AND LOWER CONTROL ARMS, BUT THEY REFUSED TO COVER THIS REPAIR. EVERY TIME I USE THE AIR CONDITIONING, THE FRONT PASSENGER CARPET GETS SOAKED. I HAVE PULLED UP THE CARPETING AND CLEANED OUT THE DRAIN TUBE AND TRIED EVERYTHING ELSE SO MANY OTHER OWNERS HAVE TRIED.
