NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
When the Atlas is cold, there is a weird screeching/grinding sound coming from the drivers side front when I press the brakes while in motion. Car has 12 miles on it. Brought it into the dealer and they say that it’s a known issue with the OEM brakes, but as it “does not cause a safety concern” it’s not covered under warranty. Dealer said that he could replace brakes with non OEM and the problem would go away. Dealer says that it is from “initial brake build-up” but that it is not likely to go away without replacing the brakes.
Metal to metal grinding sounds
The brakes sound horrible when they are cold. They grind and vibrate until they are warmed up and the car only has 8K miles on it. We are being forced to pay to have the brake pads replaced with ceramic brake pads from the semi-metallic factory ones. We have only had the car 2 weeks. They said VW would cover 70% of the cost, but with the number of complaints, this should be covered completely.
The contact owns a 2024 Volkswagen Atlas. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V100000 (Engine); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the engine cover had failed and needed to be replaced. The dealer confirmed that parts were not yet available. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
2024 Atlas SEL model does not have illuminated controls on the information system below the display. while trying to adjust settings at night it is possible to hit other vehicle functions and potentially get unwanted results that could result in destractions and unsafe driving such as accidentally deactivating the drive assist and driving mode buttons below. VW fixed the issue in 2025 but should issue a consumer convenience recall to fix this issue.
I have a horrible noise when breaking it sound like scratching and water behind the dashboard it’s horrible noise. We are afraid to use it because we think that we can run into an accident because of the sound on the breaks. The vehicle is working normal it’s just the sound that Is horrible. Nobody wants to take responsibility we took it to the dealership many times and they are blaming to the manufacture breaks company and that is an issue that they are aware of the existence because every month they run certification to theirs cars and they experience the same issue with their breaks form Volkswagen atlas 2024 and they are blaming it to the manufacture for the breaks they install to many of this suv. My advisor recommend me to change the break pads be he wouldn’t take full responsibility that the noise can go away. He told me it’s normal sound and the sound is going to keep coming back because the problem comes from the breaks. Nobody have make this into a recall and no agents want to file this as a recall. We pay 1,200 dollars every month in this lease and the sound keep happening we need some solutions as soon as possible this need to be file a a recall so they can stop installing this breaks to future cars and the problem can get bigger than what’s already is.
(Question 1) What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Answer: The front windshield spontaneously vertically cracked across the center half an hour after the car was washed in the shade on a cool day. There were no rock chips which could have caused this. (Question 2) How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The front windshield visibility was significantly impaired. (Question 3)Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? We have not yet taken it to the dealer but there is an indisputable crack. (Question 4) Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Not yet. We plan to take the car to the dealership tomorrow to have them inspect it. (Question 5) Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No.
The screen where the back up camera is becomes pixelated and you cannot use the camera. The screen becomes so pixelated that you cannot see anything. This also affects being about to use Apple Play for hands free connect. It will disconnect my phone randomly even when the screen is working. This puts others safety at risk because you cannot see what is going on behind the vehicle. Volkswagen knows about the issues. They have offered several software updates but none of them have helped anything. For a while they were replacing the screens but then found out that only fixes the problem about 50% of the time. I have had the car less than a year and I would like a screen that works all the time. There is no warning lights or really any rhyme or reason why the screen stops working. It works then other times it does not work.
I bought a 2024 Atlas in March 2024. It now has 16K miles on it and it has been meticulously maintained and cared for in that time. In May 2024, my husband and I were driving down the interstate and out of nowhere, the passenger side front door popped open by itself! We took it immediately to the dealership, where they looked at it and said they couldn't recreate the problem or identify what had caused it. We chalked it up to a fluke and moved on. Today (February 21, 2025) it happened again! It was the exact same door, and the exact same scenario occurred: there was a beep, then I could hear air coming in through the door, and it was ajar. This is a HUGE safety issue and I am terrified to continue driving this car, as I have two children and I refuse to put them in danger because of this car malfunctioning. Additionally, in the 11 months I've had this car, this will be the fifth time it is in the shop. It had to go just two weeks ago because it was leaking oil, and now it's also telling me it's low on coolant so I'm afraid that's leaking too. I am at a loss. My main concern is that the door is opening, while the vehicle is in motion, traveling at a high rate of speed, and that poses a huge safety risk not only to the individuals in my car, but all of the other cars near mine as well.
I have had this vehicle 6 months and am already replacing the windshield a second time. This time something very small hit windshield but first time it happened overnight and nothing had hit it - it was just a thin crack that grew and grew. First windshield break was in February 2025 and the second July 2025.
Not even a year old and brakes squeaking/ gurgling sounds coming from the front wheels. As time goes on seems to get worse to the point where I am braking and slips a little. I've taken by car to the dealership twice and made several calls they keep sayings it is a known issued and a flaw for VW not a safety issue. The gurling sound is not normal and not safe especially for a new vehicle. I have an open case with VW, but they won't budge since they go off of what techs are documenting. They said I would have to pay out of pocket to replace the rotors and breaks even though vehicle is only a year old. If I would have known of this issue, I would have not bought this vehicle. On another note, having issues with moisture building up and developing mold which is coming through the vents. This is something VW does not take care of would have to pay for odor treatment on faulty design. I have never ran into this issued with any other make.
The infotainment system stops working and goes blurry. The dash where the speed is shown goes black. Blind sport monitoring on the passenger side does not work. I almost got into an accident today because of this.
Grinding noise accompanied with vibration and pulsating feel in brake pedal. Fluid movement noises near driver footwell. Cavitation of hydraulic fluid in brake systems can result in corrosion and premature failure of components. Inconsistency in brake feel with pedal vibration has resulted in over and under braking. The problem has been substantiated 3 times by two independent dealers. No warning lights present.
Within a year of owning my vehicle, I began to notice a SEVERE shudder on braking when descending from 7000 foot elevation (Mammoth Lakes, CA) to a 4400 foot elevation (Bishop, CA) on [XXX] of [XXX} upon braking. I have driven this route approximately 25 times in the past 1.5 years. Normally, I would set the adaptive cruise control to 73-75 mph on this downhill grade to control speed, and let the adaptive cruise control do the work of controlling speed, while keeping my own foot off the break. However, if I did need to slow further due to traffic, I would experience a SEVERE shudder upon manual braking- see attached screenshot of a video taken at night. I brought this incident up to VW (See mechanic video) in 1/2025, and they blamed the problem on overheating of the front rotor (see technician video link below). Upon return trips to Mammoth, I now realize that this overheating was caused by the adaptive cruise control itself attempting to control auto speed. Now, in order to make this LESS dangerous, I have to let the car get up to 80 mph and then pulse the breaks- because if I let the adaptive cruise control do the work as designed, it creates an unsafe driving condition BECAUSE OF A FAULTY DESIGN by VW- if heat is an issue, better dissipation is needed, or a temperature sensor is needed. VW's solution was for me to spend $700 to replace brakes and rotors due to a VW design flaw, despite my car being under warranty, and I cannot afford this currently. I think this issue MUST be recalled immediately before I (or someone else) who drives on long hilly grades has a fatal car accident due to a design flaw in the VW Atlas Adaptive Cruise Control. The contact owns a 2024 Volkswagen Atlas. The contact stated that while at a stop sign and attempting to make a left turn, while depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to respond as needed; however, approximately five seconds later, the vehicle responded as intended. The contact stated that the transmission had shifted into neutral and then first gear after several minutes. The contact stated that a dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the failure had occurred on several occasions. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but offered no assistance. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was 3,997.
Breaks make a loud squealing sound while break both gently or hard. When breaking down an incline the breaks will grind and then slip followed by a urgent grind to hard break.
Extreme screech and scratching upon braking. Constant and well known by other VW owners.
Error: Transmission displayed on monitor and vehicle will not go into drive. Stranded with 3 little kids and need to call tow truck to take vehicle into dealership. It says you can continue driving but can’t get vehicle out of park. After researching this online it sounds like it is a common problem and could be related to the gear selector switch. I hear no electrical motors or any noise when trying to put it into gear like there is no power going to gear selector motor. Dead in the water and absolutely irritated especially with a car full of toddlers.
The windshield seems to be made of poor quality. Drives city roads , and the same roads and conditions that i drive my other teo cars but tgis 2024Atlas chipped in tow times alrrady in amonth and this time had a 7-8 icnh crack with a very small chip. This looks unusual mostly caused by low stabdard windshield or issue with how it’s installed.
I have had 4 chips in my windshield with under 7,000 miles on normal routes I have driven for years with no other vehicles having a single chip. The VW atlas forum I’m on also has several people.
I was sitting in park and the car started shaking and then completely shut down. When I was able to turn the engine back on there was a message that popped up that said Error Drive System: please service vehicle. There was a lit up part of the engine in the message. It took 3 weeks to get into the dealership. They said they could find something wrong or an error code. Something is not right with this car.
WHEN BRAKING THERE IS A GRINDING/SCREECHING NOISE Upon inspection found front brake pads to be down to metal damaging rotor i was informed by a mechanic that the issue with the brakes is not normal wear and tear that it is a factory defect coz they are not wearing out equally the right side is worst than the left that in the right side theres no brakes anymore deañer says i have to pay for it i dont understand why if my truck is new and it is not a normal wear and tear
I have a 2024 Volkswagon Atlas and right now my screen is completely not working. Everything is functional through the screen for controls as well. I can't even control the thermostat. This has become a safety issue as my windows are icy in the morning and I cant turn the defroster on. The service department at the dealership won't look at the car because they said it is a known issue and Volkswagon is doing a system update. I was told to hold the power button down for 10 seconds to reset the screen but even that is not working at all. Warning lights come up constantly as well.
We were driving down the interstate with cruise control on. There were no other cars around us thank goodness but the car slammed on the brakes with no warning. If someone had been behind us we would have been rear ended and possibly hurt.
We purchased our vehicle in August 2024. We only have around 3,200 miles on it. When leaving a space (driveway, parking space, etc), even if only parked for a short time, the brakes have a noticeable screech which I have never had on a new vehicle. The dealership inspected and said there are no issues and they will not replace the pads. They blame the type of pads used by the manufacturer. I have never had this issue on new vehicles whether it is hot, cold, wet, dry, etc. My used vehicle recently had brake pads changed and there are no sounds.
error with drive system was caused by engine overheating. maneuver braking function triggered and faulty throttle body issue discovered.
Brakes grind and vibrate and have for the past 7,000 miles, dealer continues to say this is normal for Volkswagen, this problem has been reported numerous times to VW and doing an internet search I am not the only one with this problem. Numerous other individuals with these vehicles also have this issue. The other issue is the transfer case continues to leak, this has been replaced once already, and now less than 4,000 miles later it is leaking again. VW continues to say everything is normal and it is normal to feel the vibration and grinding in the brake pedal and VW continues to say it is safe and normal for these sounds. However, this grinding feeling, not squeaking, but grinding and vibration in the brake pedal cannot be safe. This is a serious safety concern for myself and my family. They say brake pads are normal and not worn, so this isn’t a brake pad issue, but a deeper issue. The third issue is the infotainment system at times in start up will just be black, and will not come on, so you are unable to adjust climate control, radio, use backup camera, etc. the only way this will fix itself is if you turn the car off and back on, the dealer has updated they system, and it still continues to do this.
The vehicle started shaking while making metal grinding noises, which forced us to pull over and have the vehicle towed to the nearest dealership. We were told that the engine had metal parts that came loose in the engine compartment and that the engine now has to be replaced. The car had 11,205 miles prior to being immobilized.
Infotainment display graphics issue; most controls (including disabling seat heaters) are through this screen and camera is displayed on it. Unable to see display clearly and therefore interact with controls or view backup camera to look for obstacles. Search online for "2024 atlas screen glitch" and you'll see quite a few pictures that are similar.
Infotainment system sporadically becomes pixelated and hard to see and use. The dealership has verified the issue, confirms VW is aware and says there is no fix. This is a very serious safety issue while driving.
Horrific screeching sound while braking. Braking when going down slight hill grinds and drags when braking. Brake sound occurs after car stops in addition to the grinding screeching sound during braking. Took vehicle in to VW and they report brake pads are 8mm and no issues found but stated there is a defect in the composite of this models brakes and will notify once they get more information. This is absolutely unacceptable and unsafe. Why should I be driving a brand new car with these sounds?? The embarrassing sound and lack of braking is a severe concern.
Screen continues to go out causing to be non functional
since purchase the car when holding steering straight veers to the left into oncoming traffic. vehicle has been to service 9x work on the subframe was completed at the first go..significant work that VW Corporate could not explain on a new car coming off the line. attempts since from most recent road force 4 wheel balance. car still pulls to the left. VW corporate was notified we would like a replacement but they still want to send the car back to service again. transparency has not been at the front of this case, they cant answer questions when directed asked esp regarding subframe work.
Two weeks ago a small pebble hit my windshield. Immediately, the chip hit spread inches long. I was shocked that the chip spread immediately approximately 5 inches. There was zero chance of repair. This morning, I got into my car only to notice an additional crack from the top of my windshield down approximately 6 inches. I did not hear a pebble- or anything- hit my windshield. These two cracks are not near one another. I have never experienced anything like this. I've owned this brand new vehicle for 4 months. I have traveled the same routes for over 20 years with no issues. Is the glass on this vehicle subpar?
Car will not downshift RPM when pulling out of my lane and accelerating. The car will only go around 15 rpm but the car will be revving so high like it's in 3 or 4 rpm. I have to let off the gas to to bring it down to that rpm and then can accelerate again. This is a huge safety hazard. Be of these times a car is going to hit me that I didn't see come around the semi blind corner that I need to drive out of. It's also had overhead lights that blink and come on by themselves despite me having to turn them off, they just come back on. Brakes feel like I'm breaking them underwater. They've squealed going backwards from the time I drove off the lot. I'm bro g told this is normal. I've had the car in twice to be looked at. These are huge safety risks.
I am writing to formally report repeated and serious defects with my 2024 Volkswagen Atlas, VIN [XXX] , which I leased in California. These defects occurred well within the vehicle’s first year and while under factory warranty. Brake System Defect At 8,405 miles, the vehicle received its 10,000-mile maintenance. At 9,340 miles, brake pads measured 10 mm front / 8 mm rear, reflecting nearly new condition. By 13,175 miles, the pads had separated from their backing plates, causing scoring of the front rotors. Told they crumbled by the dealership. Dealer performed a “one-time goodwill repair” on the 1-year in-service date, replacing pads and rotors, but refused to document the failure as a warranty-covered defect. This premature failure at 13k miles is not normal wear and reflects a serious manufacturing/material defect that created a safety hazard. Engine and Oil Issues At 13,175 miles, the oil light came on and the vehicle was found to be low on oil despite proper service at 8,405 miles. At 8,405 miles the oil light also came on showing low to no oil. Intermittent Warning and Electrical Issues Throughout this period, the vehicle has experienced recurring warning messages and system malfunctions, including: “Error: Dynamic Road Sign Display” “Lane Assist Not Available” “Front Assist Has Limited Availability” TPMS issues, where displayed tire pressure did not match actual pressure, and the light remained on for days despite correct tire pressures being confirmed. Additional Warranty Repairs At 9,943 miles, the radio required a software repair under warranty. Paint defect required repair under warranty. Summary: In less than 14,000 miles, this vehicle has experienced: Critical brake system failure (pads separating, rotor damage). Engine oil loss triggering warning light. Multiple electrical and safety system errors affecting driver-assist features. Radio malfunction requiring repair. Paint defect requiring repair. The contact owns a 2024 Volkswagen Atlas. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V464000 (Air Bags). The contact stated that while driving 70 MPH, the vehicle struck a deer that jumped in the middle of the roadway impacting the vehicle on the front driver's side. The contact was attempting to pull over when another vehicle rear-ended her vehicle while driving at an unknown speed, fatally wounding the driver of the other vehicle. The other vehicle had the driver as the only occupant and succumbed to their inquiries on the scene. No air bags were deployed. The "Crash Detected" and "Air Bag Malfunction" messages were displayed. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The front passenger's side seat, where the contact's husband was sitting, inadvertently moved backward and seized upon impact. The contact's son, who was sitting in the rear passenger's seat, was unable to exit the vehicle immediately since the rear passenger's side door failed to open. The medics extracted her son from the rear driver's side door. The contact, her husband, and her son were transported to the hospital by ambulance. A police report was filed. The contact sustained bruising to the right eye, lung, hips, and arms, as well as a cracked tooth and a fractured rib. At the hospital, the contact received staples in her head and four stitches on the forehead. The contact's husband suffered cuts and bruises on his right arm and hip. The contact's son sustained a head contusion, shoulder bruising, and cuts and bruises on his knees. The vehicle was towed to the tow yard but was not yet deemed totaled by the insurance company. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 15,327.
I have a 2024 VW Atlas and the infotainment screen sporadically goes pixelated and it is very hard to use the touchscreen controls. When this happens the rearview camera is also impossible to use as the screen is all scrambled. I have in Massachusetts and now since it cold in the morning if the screen is scrambled it makes it very hard to control the heat and turn on the defroster. I will have to let my car sit in my driveway running for at least 20 minutes before I can see out the window. The car has been to VW 3 times now and nothing has been resolved. They are now telling me that they are waiting on a new software updated that will happen mid December. This is a major safety issue and needs to be resolved immediately. Looking online this is a MAJOR problem that VW is aware of but don't have a resolution to.
I have had this new car for 10 months. Since last month, when I start the car, the Rear Traffic Alerts light comes on on the dashboard and a warning message comes up saying that the rear traffic alert is not working. Then I turn off the car, open and close the driver's door, and start the car again. This happens every now and then. There is no problem with the car or the sensor. I searched the internet and YouTube and found that there are some people who have the same problem as mine. I hope this can be fixed.
Front assist constantly goes off, parking sensors faulty, damaged by general driving. Lane departure warning light
I was driving about 75 mph when my car alerted me that the engine had stopped and I needed to pull over immediately. The wheels continued to turn and the car was stuck in neutral. I pulled over and tried to push the SOS button which did not connect. I then tried to restart my car and it started but would not shift out of neutral. I called the police for help and my brand new car had to be towed. The tires then froze up after being put on the tow truck and would not release- even though the car was in neutral. When the car finally did start and shift after getting to the dealer ship, the car told me it was in emergency transmission mode. My safety was most definitely put at risk because my car turned off on the interstate for no apparent reason - i luckily was able to get to the emergency lane. I have taken it to the shop and of course they could no replicate this issue- there were no lights prior to this
Car exploded. I was driving fine with ac running when all of a sudden gray smoke came out the hood of the car. I stoped in a side street. I turned off the car and the gray smoke became black. I took my phone and ran out. As I ran the car exploded like a bomb on the street and started throwing flames. Car is completely loss. Car has been to it’s maintainer and everything and nothing found.
Bought a new 2024 VW Atlas Se with 4 miles on it. Around 6700 miles my brakes grinds and squeaks whenever I brake when the pads are cold. Took it to the VW dealership in Capitol Heights, MD. They claimed they cleaned the brakes but the same problem is occurring. From researching the problem it seems many people are having this same problem. VW should be aware of the issues.
Windshield cracked without a significant event occurring. Windshield appears to be weaker or defective. I have driven over 220k miles on another vehicle and only replaced the windshield once due to hitting a deer! This was less than one year of having the atlas and it was a small rock at lower speeds (30-35mph). There are numerous other complaints of cracked windshields on this model, even multiple replacements. I admittedly drive 25-30k miles a year but have never had road debris crack a windshield like that. I could see if I was following a semi-truck or garbage truck and had something significant happen but I expect the windshield to hold up against minor rocks and other road debris hitting it. It cracked/spidered immediately.
The rear brake lights allow moisture inside the brake lenses.
VW dealer says recall cannot be fixed. They refused to purchase car or trade in. I needed to sell my car as part of a work relocation crossing international borders and cannot. Please advise on how to proceed.
On September 9, 2024, I experienced a serious and concerning issue with my 2024 Volkswagen Atlas that compromised the safety and comfort of the vehicle. After stopping at a gas station, I returned to my vehicle and started the engine. Immediately, an extremely loud humming/vibrating noise began inside the vehicle, which was unbearable. I turned off the vehicle, but the noise persisted. We attempted to turn off the radio and air controls and checked both the interior and exterior of the vehicle, but none of these actions helped locate the source or stop the noise. Standing outside with all doors shut, the noise remained clearly audible. After further investigation, we discovered that opening at least two vehicle doors would stop the noise. If only one door was opened, the noise would persist. This issue occurred regardless of whether the vehicle was on or off. We had to drive the vehicle with this noise in order to get my child to school. Afterward, we left the vehicle off with two doors open for about 10 minutes. When we revisited the vehicle and closed the doors, the noise was no longer present. The loud noise created a significant distraction, making it difficult to concentrate on driving, thereby posing a risk to my family, other drivers, and pedestrians. I have not had a chance to drive the vehicle again so the problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center, nor has the vehicle been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others. During the occurrence of this issue, no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms indicated any problem with the vehicle; all systems displayed normal functioning.
1. While backing up and going over grass (not curb), brakes slam on. Passenger was leaning forward while this happened and it abruptly jolted him. He thought I did it but my foot was on the gas to back up. Car rarely detects a large curb though. Service could not reproduce. Started in March 2025 2. While driving behind a car that is slowing down or turning, brakes will (sometimes) slam on and a loud beep and red symbol on the dash appears. While I know this is a safety feature, it happens at random. It doesn't always work at times when I am very close to a turning vehicle that decelerates quickly, and it will happen when I am also decelerating and several car lengths behind a car. Cause me to almost slide into oncoming traffic on one occasion. Service could not reproduce. Started April 2025. Still happening. 3. While driving 75-80mph on the highway (posted speed is 70mph), car suddenly braked and rapidly decelerated to a speed of 35mph (not a posted highway speed). This has happened several times over the past few months. Thankfully, no one was behind me or they would've smashed into me. Service disabled the feature so now I'm paying for a feature that I cannot use and doesn't work correctly. However, it is on many other VW's and could cause a serious accident to the unsuspecting driver. April 2025. 4. Windows go down at random when pulling up lever to close. Service blamed on my vent visors and says it is a safety feature to prevent injuries. However, my daughter had her arm out the window and it did not stop going up and ended up pinching her arm in the window. I had to lower it with my lever. Service cannot replicate and gives me the same reasoning every time. Ongoing since Sept. 2024. 5. Car sometimes lags/hesitates when taking off from a stop. When trying to quickly enter traffic, this could cause a car to hit me if the car isn't getting up and going like it usually does. Service could not replicate. Started May 2025. Still ongoing
after the car has come to a stop, I will press on the gas to go. It will start to go and then die. This has left me in the middle of on coming traffic. Removing my foot from the gas and then reapplying it the car will accelerate. This has created dangerous situations on a few occasions. This has happened approximately 6-8 times since I bought the car. The dealer found nothing wrong with the car, 9/5/24, but it still happens
The display which provides all vehicle information as well as guidance malfunctions (pixelates). Volkswagen acknowledges a faulty display chip is the cause. The dealer has updated software and even replaced the display with no success. I notified the dealer about the replaced display and he advised the VW has stopped the display replacement process. This means that potentially all 2024 Volkswagen Atlas vehicles are suspect. Without vehicle data accessible and no navigation available this distraction has created a hazard for driving on at least 2 occasions.
