The contact owns a 2023 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V030000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The local dealer was contacted and confirmed that the part was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced reduced range and reduced performance due to a failure associated with the recall, and the vehicle had stalled on several occasions and had to be towed to the local dealer. Additionally, while driving, the rear passenger’s side door erroneously opened while a passenger was seated next to the door, and the infotainment screen was unintentionally reset, and the screen went blank. The cause of the failures was not yet determined. The failure mileage was 9,000.
The car came to a sudden unexpected stop from about 10 miles per hour. Everything shut down and the car came to a harsh stop, skipping/shuddering/stuttering. Happened so fast and unexpectedly that it startled me. Almost like the brakes were locking up and pulsing. But no brakes were ever applied by me. After coming to a complete stop car was completely dark. I tried to press the brake pedal to start it and nothing. Tried the brake pedal a second time and it turned on allowing me to drive away. Shortly after this event a thumping or banging noise started to occur when I accelerate or decelerate. Almost like something is loose below my feet. Weird thing is the sound is not constant. Comes and goes. Seems to be triggered after I make a right turn. Car has been at the dealer since November 28,2023 for this issue and is still at the dealer as of December 5, 2023 . Aside from this I recently got the car back from the dealer after being in for a week to replace the right rear door handle as it was faulty and opened on its own. Apparently not the known recall though.
- The door handles do not open on most occasions when there are passengers in the back seats. It is available for inspection. - I cannot get the passengers out and that is a risk in any situation when I need to open these doors. - Yes, the dealership confirmed that this issue is part of the door handle recall (NHTSA #24V651). - It has not been inspected by others outside of friends and family. The dealership said that because there is no solution, there is nothing they can do about it and therefore it doesn't need to be brought in. - No warning lamps, etc.
ID4 intermittently giving me errors to have electric system checked. And when the error comes on it will reduce performance so I can only go about 10-20mph. Sometimes if you turn the vehicle off for like 30 minutes then error will clear but then come up again another time when starting the vehicle. Which is dangerous to just have it reduce performance on you at random.
The contact owns a 2023 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact stated that after driving and parking the vehicle in the garage overnight, the following day the contact became aware that the front windshield was cracked from the driver’s to the passenger’s side. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was determined that the windshield was possibly impacted by a pebble. The vehicle was not repaired. The mechanic informed the contact that the windshield was on backorder however, the vehicle was drivable. The vehicle was taken to a glass repair facility and the contact was informed that the replacement windshield was not available. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The approximate failure mileage was 4,994.
While backing up in a driveway at approximately 3-4 miles per hour, the vehicle lost all power and stalled. Both screens went completely black. Seconds later (10-15 maybe) the system re-initialized as if it was rebooted. If this happened at higher speed, it might result in accidents.
The contact owns a 2023 Volkswagen ID4. The contact stated that on several occasions the vehicle would not start and on one occasion the vehicle shut off while at a stop light. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer who performed a software update but the failures continued to occur. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The failure mileage was 100.
2023 VW ID.4 S. After backing into our garage and parking with my Wife and two kids, my wife attempted to exit the passenger door. As she exited, our daughter immediately behind her began to scream as the passenger seat had completely reclined on its own. We panicked as we had no idea what was going on. My initial thought was to hit 'memory 1' on the passenger seat, only to find that memory 1 was now the fully reclined position. This continued on for 15+ secs as my Wife and I tried to pull our daughter away from the back seat. Unfortunately, her legs were pinched by the passenger seat and she was unable to move. Finally, I was able to dissengage the seat by manually adjusting the recline. This was an extremely scary situation that could have caused serious harm to our child. Additionally, this seems to be a common issue as reported on VW forums and Reddit. There were no warnings and we did not hear the seat reclining.
Car shuts off on reversing and forward at low speed
I have a Manufacturer Compliance Recall and a Manufacturer Safety Recall outstanding, neither of which the manufacturer can fix. I have called the dealership multiple times to make an appointment to have them fixed, but they do not yet have the remedies available. I have had multiple problems with this car from the day I got it on November 6, 2023. I get errors that pop up constantly on the screen, but they come and go so quickly while I'm driving that I can barely read them, much less take a photo. One of them says maneuver braking is not available. My screen goes out and flashes constantly, but again, it happens so quickly that I can't get photos while I'm driving. I have tried many times, but I'm not going to risk my safety to get a photo of my failing software. This car has no TPMS sensors, so I never have any idea of the status of my tires or if they're low. The car brakes suddenly, going forward and in reverse, and it has happened going at a high speed on the tollway. It was very scary and thankfully no one was behind me. I have trouble getting the charger out of the port on a regular basis. I have to unlock the vehicle on the fob about 5 times before the charger will come out. When I plug in the charger, it is hit or miss whether it will actually charge. I always have to check it later to see if it actually did. It charges on the first try about 50% of the time, and this car has put me in a bind multiple times when I have a long drive the next day. I believe Volkswagen hired the least competent engineers to build this car. It is the most frighteningly terrible car I've ever driven, and I believe Volkswagen should buy this car back from me at the current market value.
29987 miles 11/3/2023 – I brought my vehicle to Findlay VW Henderson NV for the 30,000-mile service, the 12V electrical issue, and the door handle recall. Andrew Lammers, the service consultant told me they’d check everything out while my vehicle was in the shop and before releasing it back to me. I received a call about a week later that there were parts hold. On 11/17 I was advised my vehicle was ready. I was told the 12V battery, high voltage system, and electrical were tested and were okay. 4-wheel alignment, front assist, and lane assist systems were also recalibrated. I was assured I shouldn’t have any electrical issues any longer. I picked my vehicle up 11/18, one day after I was notified it was finished.
While driving the radio stopped playing then the infotainment center went black (turned off) and the instrument display, including the speedometer and ADAS, turned off. The vehicle kept driving but no speed information was available which is a safety risk to myself and others. After about 30 seconds the infotainment and display cluster restarted and returned to normal operation. If relevant, Android Auto was also being used and lost connection during this time. For my individual vehicle, this problem has not yet been confirmed by a dealer nor has it been inspected. There was no warning message or alert before this issue happened.
Optical Windshield Distortion The distortion is noticeable on the drivers and passenger sides of the windshield where it meets the vertical frames of the body. They are approximately 2-3 inches wide running the full vertical length. The distortion is clearly visible in full light, affecting peripheral vision of approaching vehicle movement or other passing external sources of glare day and night. They are not visible when the windshield is in shade. The dealership affirmed the malady and submitted a warranty claim to VW regarding the material defect (07/20/23). It was authorized and the windshield was replaced (10/27/23). The replacement windshield has visible distortion as well; affirmed again by dealership service staff. The 2nd warranty claim was denied by Volkswagen. Their reason, related by the dealership service staff, "was that all windshields have distortion". The dealership would not supply documentation when requested. This is clearly a material defect that poses a safety concern under all driving conditions. Verification of this claim can be seen on this vehicle or the dealerships demonstration unit(s) as well as a supportive review of similar incidents at ID4 owner websites such as [XXX] ). INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Infotainment and dashboard are blanking out while driving. system appears to be rebooting. lose entire display, and radio. Has happened multiple times, twice in one day even. when I reported to the dealership they said it was a reboot, but did not offer a way to fix the issue. concerning because I rely on the system for driving directions at times and this is disabled for a few minutes at least each time it happens, and does not always restart correctly.
Unknown the car after finishing loading it at a public charger. The entire board went out. and now the screen is frozen without having access to see the reverse camera and the radio is on
The windshield of the vehicle is heated. The film that is used causes distortion in the primary field of view. This causes headaches and blurry vision during long drives. I have taken it to the dealership and they informed me that all the ID.4 vehicles that have the heated windshield have the same issue.
Control/infotainment system crashed without warning while driving at speed. It appeared that all the driver's assistance features were unavailable until the completely system rebooted.
The contact owns a 2023 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact stated that while driving at undisclosed speeds and after stopping at a stop sign and attempting to accelerate, the vehicle failed to respond as intended. The contact stated that the accelerator pedal needed to be depressed several times before the vehicle accelerated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer however, the cause for the failure was not found. The contact stated that a technician test-drove the vehicle with him and noticed the failure however since the mechanic was unable to retrieve an error code, the vehicle could not be properly diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure; however, no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.
Controls for cabin temperature and media volume are not lit at night. Difficult to find and actuate without turning on the cabin lights and reducing the driver's view of the road. The power "button" (capacitive touch area, not a button) for the control/infotainment screen is immediately to the left of the temperature control and it is very common to turn off the screen when attempting to adjust temperature. All of which takes driver's attention from the road.
Here is a summary of the problems I have encountered: 1.At just 2000 miles, the windshield of my 2023 ID 4 developed a crack without any apparent reason or external impact. 2.My insurance has agreed to replace the windshield; however, there are currently no spare windshields available, and no one can provide a timeline for when they will become available. 3.Due to the unavailability of replacement windshields, I have been left with a cracked and damaged windshield, which cannot be replaced. 4.To my dismay, the initial crack has continued to spread, and two more cracks have appeared seemingly out of nowhere, with the total mileage reaching 2500 miles. 5.It is evident that the glass in my vehicle is defective, but Volkswagen has been unresponsive to my concerns, refusing to acknowledge the defect and provide a solution. 6.Driving the vehicle with a damaged windshield is clearly unsafe; however, I have no alternative means of transportation as this is my only car. 7.I strongly believe that Volkswagen dealerships should be required to disclose the unavailability of spare parts for VW vehicles to potential buyers. This lack of transparency puts customers at risk and leaves them in an untenable situation, as I am experiencing.
The contact owned a 2023 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact stated while driving 30 MPH and making a right turn, the door opened unexpectedly. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V651000 (STRUCTURE); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure; however, the manufacturer was unable to confirm when parts would be available for the recall repair. The failure mileage was unknown. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
I have a cracked windshield on my 2023 VW ID.4 - both Safelite and the dealer state that there's a glass shortage, and the replacement has been on back order since October 3. They state there's not a danger in driving it, but twice in cold weather/rain there's been a cracking sound and the windshield starts to smoke. I believe this is arcing/smoking from the heated windshield, though VW corporate says they are unaware of this issue. I have also seen this problem documented by others on Reddit, and I also have a video of the problem on my windshield. I bring this up to you because I fear with the arcing/smoking it may be a safety hazard.
A few minutes after charging at an Electrify America location (JFK cell phone lot) I had to step out of the vehicle. Suddenly all sensors stopped working, I was locked out, key fob doesn't work, manual key didn't work either, truck locked out. Car would not connect to the app. I smell something burning but lightened after a few minutes. After 20 minutes of struggle, miraculously I got one door open and drove home. Speedometer stopped working on the way back and I cannot get the car to stop, ac would not turn off either on its own. I am trying to get a service appointment as soon as I can with my dealership.
The infotayment system goes completely dark while driving and reboots by itself after a few minutes. This has happened while I'm driving on the highway at 65MPH and on the roads at 40MPH, happens at any speeds. It happens randomly without a warning. Everything simply shuts down. I have videos of two different occasions that it happened. The dealership ran a diagnostic and said nothing came up. It happened again and same thing - diagnostic and nothing comes up. It happened again, I called VW NA and sent videos but they said it has been resolved. It happened again. Not sure what to do next.
The contact owns a 2023 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V344000 (Back Over Prevention, Equipment, Electrical System) however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact stated while driving 45 MPH, the instrument cluster screen went blank. The contact pulled over and turned off and restarted the vehicle and the instrument cluster became operable. The contact stated that the instrument cluster was rebooting as if the vehicle had been started and was stuck in a reboot loop before eventually regaining normal functionality. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent and occurred at various speeds. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer who checked the software version and informed the contact that the software was up to date; however, the failure reoccurred. The contact took the vehicle to the same dealer after receiving the recall notification and was informed that the software patch to repair the issue was not yet available. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 24,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
The windshield cracked after a very minor rock impact right where the windshield meets the frame on the passenger side. The impact was so minor that I barely even noticed it - only once I saw the crack (large crack, maybe 10-12 inches) did I think back on what could have caused it. Safety issue: obviously a windshield that cracks to the point of replacement after a minor impact is a safety problem, as is driving a windshield with a large crack. It has not been inspected and the issue hasn't been reproduced by anyone (dealer or service center). However - an odd number of people have referenced a very similar issue (minor impact causes cracked windshield) on an internet forum. No warnings, obviously.
9/13/23 Got into my vehicle to head home around 9:15PM , headlights would not turn on. Tried switching from automatic to manual turn on no success. Could not unlock passenger doors from drivers side switch, had to exit car with key to unlock doors. There was a warning on the cluster above the steering wheel that says “ WARNINGS AND INFORMATION NOT AVAILABLE. DRIVE WITH GREATER CARE! Mileage would not display. There was yellow triangle showing service, inspection overdue with mileage of 62546. Car was bought July 2023 and has less than 800 miles. Car shows now on the information display under status more than 61K added at the failure
This is a new vehicle used for less than 2 weeks. It has under 250 miles on it. The vehicle looses power and displays the following warning messages: “Error: Drive System. Please safely stop vehicle!” and “Electrical System not working correctly. Please service your vehicle” I was in a very unsafe situation without power but luckily was able to guide the car over to the side of the road with the momentum it had. The vehicle has been at the dealer since that event which has been 6 days now. Still no word on if / when it will be fixed.
Unknown - The day after purchasing the vehicle, and less than 24hrs and 50 miles on the vehicle, I attempted to start it and all the warning lights immediately went on. The vehicle subsequently locked me out and I was unable to gain entry into the vehicle. The car was towed to the dealership and has been with the dealership for 2 weeks. VW America is apparently sending engineers to look at the vehicle to determine what happened.
Since purchasing my vehicle in January of 2023 the front breaks have been squeaking. I brought this to the attention of the dealer where I purchased the vehicle, several times. I even asked them how I will I even supposed to know if I need new brakes because the start of the squeaking is typically a sign to get your brakes checked. Anyway, online auto forums are loaded with this squeaking brake problem!!! A few weeks ago I went in for service and VW told me my brakes were at 6mm, and suggested replacement of the pads. Yes, at 6 mm! So now all I can help but think that VW has known all along about this brake problem and at about year three, they feel that they can recommend a brake job. After leaving the dealership, I went to the garage near my house and they ordered new front pads and rotors. My problem has been resolved!! Squeaking gone!! The safety concern here is that driving this vehicle with the squeaky brakes for year will cause the driver to ignore the ongoing squeaking noise, which may result in them driving beyond the life of the brakes.
My windshield incurred a crack on 8/15/23 that continues to spread. To this day, 10/29/23, I cannot locate a replacement windshield and the dealers can only communicate that there is a nationwide backorder with no timetable as to when the replacement will be available. It is inconceivable that a car manufacturer can sell a model without a stock of basic replacement parts, especially something as simple as a windshield. I am dreading heading into the winter months with a cracks windshield.
During driving my computer system shut down and restarted. Instruments went grey. This is not safe.
I was driving down the interstate and the entirety of the electronic screens froze up. The data presented on the screens was frozen and all the touch buttons froze. With no access to any controls, in a downpour, I was unable to adjust the climate control, turn on the defrosters or have any idea how fast I was going. I proceeded to stop on the interstate, thinking I could shut the car off and restart it to reset the controls, but that did nothing except get me soaked and risk my life being stopped on the side of the highway. This car has a seat activated power on and off so it comes on when you sit down and shuts off when you get up (which is a stupid idea anyway) but upon exiting the car and even locking it with the FOB, the vehicle would not shut off or reset. Soaked, I got back in and continued down the highway with no defrosters or climate control and arrived at my meeting. I was unable to shut the car off so it ran through my lunch then I made the same journey back home, 100+ miles down the interstate with no speedometer, climate control or defrosters. Once I arrived home, I disconnected the battery which did reset the system and displays. I suppose I better carry tools with me to be able to disconnect the battery on the interstate, next time. This is disgusting to me, that VW would not provide some kind of reset option in a very dangerous situation like this. During my event, I called both their “roadside assistance” and customer service, WITH NO BLUE TOOTH, and neither of them were able to help me in any way, except tell me to pull over and have it towed.
20122 miles 7/31/2023 – Infotainment screen would reboot at random. I was also receiving the 12V battery message still and the electrical system error Dropped vehicle off at AutoNation VW for the 20000-mile service. Mark Daddario said that sometimes it’s how the customer drives the EV’s that makes the errors come up but couldn’t tell me anyway I was driving it incorrectly. I left the vehicle asking them to perform the maintenance, perform the door handle recall, and replace the flat tire under my VW Care tire protection plan. I left the vehicle with them for several days while I was out of town. Upon picking up the vehicle Chris Guilkey told me everything was performed, but the system was down so they couldn’t give me any paperwork. He handed me the key and pointed to my vehicle which was returned to me with 17% charge. Shortly after leaving the dealership the vehicle performed a thud and shut down. After waiting a few minutes, it restarted again. I drove back to the dealership and Chris didn’t see any errors on the screen so told me everything should be fine.
My cars backup cameras have never worked properly and the dealer keeps changing me $485.00 to run a complete diagnostic every time I take it in. My car will erratically pulled to the right for no reason and caused the right front tire to blow forcing me to have it towed to the dealer and they had to replace both front tires which cost me $900.00 to replace. The car locked up the brakes and turned it to the right causing me to sever my left outer thumb which has cost me over $700.00 so far and is going to require me to have 4+ hours of surgery on my thumb by a surgeon and they haven't given me the cost of the surgery yet but it is estimated at over $7,000.00 and I am left handed and doesn't allow me to use that hand to hold the steering wheel or anything else.
The contact owns a 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 S. The contact stated that while coming to a stop at 7MPH, the brake pedal was depressed but the vehicle accelerated. The contact then attempted to switch lanes but crashed into the vehicle in front at 20mph. The air bag did not deploy. There were no injuries reported. No police report was filed. The vehicle did not display any warning messages. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired as of yet. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 200.
Sensors detect objects that do not exist. Car applies emergency braking both forwards and backwards when turning. Had happened multiple times but latest incident is recorded on this complaint.
The digital speedometer will shut off and all screens will turn of them keep restarting while driving.
As you pull to a complete stop, in the final speed between 2mph and 0mph, the brake will pull away from my foot and go straight towards the floor. The car will lurch forward and then come to a complete stop. This happens 2-4 times per month and the dealership can’t find any service codes. My wife won’t drive the vehicle.
Screen (both steering wheel and bigger screen to the right) go blank intermittently without any data being displayed (computer resetting itself excessively).
The contact owns a 2023 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to a dealer after hearing that there was a defect with doors. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be repaired. The contact stated that on several occasions, the front passenger’s side door inadvertently unlocked and opened while driving at slow speeds. The vehicle was then taken to Colonial Volkswagen of Westborough (89 Turnpike Rd, Westborough, MA 01581) however, the contact was unable to schedule an appointment to repair the vehicle. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 2,700. The dealer in Massachusetts ran a diagnostic and stated the contact needs a new door handle.
I was driving the freeway and suddenly I lost control of the steering wheel for a few seconds. My car suddenly went left & right by itself & I could not control it. I didn't turn on the lane assistance mode. It was terrifying since I drove the freeway all the time & had never happened. This could be very dangerous when the freeway is busy. I would have been hitting another cars. I heard many people reported the same issue.
Assist program just stop working. This manages blind spot. I have no blind spot working.
When the smart seat function was on we experienced the passenger seat automatically fully reclining up on exiting the car. Our child in the back seat had their legs pressed to the point of pain. The dealer claimed that the passenger must have been holding the button down, but they had fully exited the vehicle and the smart seats were reclining the seats. I have seen other reports of this in online forums as well.
The door to the charging port is not attached well. I had a 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro S and now have a 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro S AWD and in both cases, the charger port door has fallen off before there was 5000 miles on the vehicle. Under the door is a base with numerous holes in it which allows rain and snow to enter the charger port.
The car has a wireless mobile charger that makes the mobile so hot that forces the device to shut down. It was so hot that burnt my daughter’s hand
1. FRONT COLLISION WARNING SENSOR DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE WORKING. THE FRONT SENSOR DOES NOT DETECT ANYTHING IN THE FRONT WHILE IN DRIVING MODE. COULD BE A SOFTWARE OR SENSOR ISSUE. NEEDS TO BE CHECKED OUT. 2. WHEN COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP, USUALLY ON THE STOP SIGN OR RED LIGHT. SOMETIMES THE VEHICLE AUTOMATICALLY SWITCHES OFF OR GOES TO THE PARK MODE. IN ORDER TO SWITCH ON THE VEHICLE, I NEED TO STEP OUT OF THE VEHICLE, LOCK THE DOORS, THEN UNLOCK THE DOORS, THEN I CAN RESTART THE VEHICLE. TO DRIVE. LOOKS LIKE THERE MUST BE A SOFTWARE ISSUE. NEEDS TO BE CHECKED FOR THE SAFETY AND CONVINCE.
When maneuvering off our steep driveway and performing a right turn onto the road, it's necessary to reverse back up the driveway to do this. When putting the car in reverse and then pressing the accelerator, the car went forward (more than a small roll, about a foot or so). This happened 3 times in the course of this maneuver - so put car in reverse, applied accelerator car went forward, braked to stop car going forward, put car in reverse, applied accelerator, car went forward, and repeated. This took us dangerously close to a drop off. This seems like a safety problem that the car goes forward to that extent when in reverse. The problem has been reported to the dealer. They have not tried to reproduce this problem.
I own a 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 AWD Pro S. Which has significant distortion in the windshield which I noticed almost immediately after picking up the vehicle. There is significant distortion about halfway up the windshield. When it is raining it makes it very difficult to see out the window. It seems worse on the driver's side. I brought it to my VW dealer for its 10,000-mile check-up. Service told me I needed new wiper blades. When I told them it was less than six months old and should be covered under warranty, they said that the wipers were only warranted for one year or 7000 miles (if I remember the mileage correctly. I'm not convinced there is anything wrong with the wipers. But they also didn't have them in stock and had to order them. It is VERY difficult to see clearly even inb light rain. In addition, the intermittent wipers speed are fast at one end and too slow at the other..with no in-between.
The contact owns a 2023 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the instrument panel display was not working as intended. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V344000 (Back Over Prevention, Equipment, Electrical System); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue; however, no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 22,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
