2005 CHEVROLET COBALT 89,000 MILES. POWER STEERING WENT OUT 11/26/2009 WHILE ON EXPRESSWAY GOING APPROXIMATELY 65MPH. POWER STEERING? LIGHT CAME ON AND VEHICLE BECAME VERY HARD TO CONTROL. NEXT DAY VEHICLE RAN FINE. THREE DAYS LATER POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON AND POWER STEERING WENT OUT AGAIN. IT IS NOW PERMANENTLY OUT AND I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP IT WILL COST $900 IF NOT MORE TO REPAIR, ALSO QUESTIONED DEALERSHIP IF THERE ARE ANY RECALLS AND REPAIR MAN SAID HE CHECKED AND THERE WASN'T?T. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY VERY UNSAFE AND A VERY COSTLY MALFUNCTION WITH THESE VEHICLES AND SHOULD BE RECALLED BY GM IN MY OPINION. *TR
2005 CHEVY COBALT POWER STEERING PROBLEM, IT SEEMS LIKE LOOSE WHEN YOU DRIVE. NO ACCIDENT HAPPEN, JUST WANT TO FILE A COMPLAIN ON THIS CAR. *TR
WHILE DRIVING THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT AND THE POWER STEERING LIGHT COMES ON. IF THE CAR IS TURNED OFF AND BACK ON THE POWER STEERING WORKS FINE, BUT WILL GO OUT AGAIN WHILE DRIVING. THIS HAPPENS EVERYTIME I DRIVE. I HAVE BEEN RESEARCHING ONLINE AND THIS SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH MANY COBALT, MALIBU AND OTHER MODELS. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS OF 55 MPH THE POWER STEERING ALARM FLASHED ON THE DASHBOARD AND TRIGGERED THE ALARM. IMMEDIATELY, THE VEHICLE LOST POWER STEERING AND PROCEEDED TO DRIFT TO THE LEFT INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. THE CONTACT HAD TO UTILIZE EXTREME BODILY FORCE IN ORDER TO AVOID CRASHING WITH ONCOMING TRAFFIC AND MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE STEERING WHEEL. SHE WAS ABLE TO MANEUVER THE VEHICLE OFF THE HIGHWAY AND SHUT OFF THE ENGINE. WHEN STARTING THE IGNITION, THE POWER STEERING RESET ITSELF AND WAS OPERATING NORMALLY. THE FAILURE OCCURRED TWO ADDITIONAL TIMES AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE HE REPLACED THE ENTIRE POWER STEERING COLUMN AND ASSEMBLY. THERE WERE NO FAILURES AFTER THE REPAIRS WERE MADE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 65,726 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGES WAS 82,000. UPDATED 4/7/2010 *CN THE POWER STEERING ASSIST MODULE WAS REPLACED. THE POWER STEERING IN MY 2005 CHEVY COBALT WENT OUT. FOR NO APPARENT REASON I LOST MY POWER STEERING WHILE TRAVELING THROUGH CHICAGO. AS YOU CAN IMAGINE THIS MAKES IT EXTREMELY HARD TO DRIVE. BEING A COLLEGE STUDENT I CAN'T AFFORD TO REPLACE THE FAULTY STEERING COLUMN. MY FIANCE AND I HAVE OWNED THE CAR FOR LESS THAN TWO YEARS AND THE CAR HAD UNDER 80,000 MILES ON IT. THERE ARE SEVERAL SAFETY ISSUES AS I DO NOT HAVE COMPLETE CONTROL OF THE CAR. TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY I LIVE IN MICHIGAN AND THE WINTER DRIVING ISN'T EASY ESPECIALLY WITHOUT POWER STEERING. *TR
I WAS DRIVING MY MOTHER'S 2005 CHEVY COBALT IN PHOENIX, AZ ON THE 101 FREEWAY. WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 60 MILES PER HOUR THE POWER STEERING DISCONTINUED TO FUNCTION. I AM AN EXPERIENCED DRIVER AND WAS ABLE TO REACT TO THE FAILURE. THE FOLLOWING WEEK THE CAR WENT TO KEMPTON'S CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP, THE ENTIRE STEERING UNIT NEEDED REPLACEMENT. LUCKILY WE HAVE A RELATIVE WHO WORKS FOR GM AND WAS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM WITH THE COBALTS. GM HELPED WITH THE REPAIR COST, HOWEVER MY MOTHER STILL HAD TO PAY $500. MY MOTHER IS RETIRED AND LIVING ON A FIXED INCOME. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED AS HE WAS DRIVING AT LOW SPEED THE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND THE VEHICLE STARTED JERKING AND THE POWER STEERING WAS LOST. THE CONTACT STATED HE ALMOST LANDED UP IN A DITCH BECAUSE HE COULD NOT CONTROL THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY REPAIRED THE POWER STEERING ASSIST MOTOR AND INSTALLED AN A F MOTOR KIT AND THE LOST COMMUNICATION CODE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 76,794.
MY 2005 CHEVY COBALT HAS EXPERIENCED POWER STEERING FAILURE AT 72,000, THIS HAPPENS IN LESS THAN 1 MINUTE OF DRIVING THE CAR, MAKES IT VERY HARD TO TURN LEFT OR RIGHT AFTER COMING TO A FULL STOP. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AND COULD CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. *TR
THE POWER STEERING IN MY 2005 CHEVY COBALT LS FAILS UNEXPECTEDLY. THERE SEEMS TO BE NO REASON AS TO WHY, OR WHEN THIS WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. I BELIEVE THAT IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD BECAUSE THERE ARE RANDOM TIMES WHEN THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING FAILS. THE PROBLEM FIRST OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING AROUND A SHARP CURVE WHICH ALMOST LEAD TO AN ACCIDENT. I'M NOT SURE HOW OFTEN THIS OCCURS AS IT IS RANDOM. HOWEVER, I CAN SAY THAT I HAVE NOT YET BEEN ABLE TO DRIVE FOR MORE THAN AN HOUR WITHOUT IT GIVING OUT. ALSO, WHEN YOU TURN THE CAR OFF AND RESTART IT, THE POWER STEERING WILL COME BACK ON. BUT LIKE I SAID BEFORE IT IS COMPLETELY RANDOM AS TO HOW LONG IT WILL REMAIN ON. THERE HAVE BEEN TIMES WHEN IT WOULD WORK FOR AN HOUR AFTER RESTARTING IT, TO LESS THAN A MINUTE AFTER RESTARTING IT. I WOULD LIKE SOMETHING TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS, BECAUSE IT IS SUCH A HAZARD AND COULD TAKE LIVES. I BELIEVE THAT THE PRICE FOR FIXING A PROBLEM LIKE THIS IS OVER 1000 DOLLARS WITHOUT WARRANTY. WHILE STARTING HER VEHICLE AND ATTEMPTING TO DRIVE, THE POWER STEERING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE WARNING PANEL AND THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD NOT RESPOND. THERE WERE ALSO SEVERAL INSTANCES WHERE SHE WAS ALMOST REAR-ENDED WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH DUE TO THE STEERING WHEEL NOT RESPONDING WHEN SHE ATTEMPTED TO MAKE A LEFT OR RIGHT TURN. THE FAILURES OCCURRED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER; HOWEVER, THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE CONTINUED TO OCCUR AND THE DEALER ADVISED HER TO REPLACE THE POWER STEERING PUMP AND STEERING COLUMN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 51,561. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS UNDER 51,682. MY 2005 CHEVY COBALT HAS POWER STEERING ISSUES SINCE I BOUGHT IT (11/09). THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT COMES ON AND POWER STEERING COMES ON THE MESSAGE BOARD. WHEN THIS HAPPENS AND I AM DRIVING IT, IT IS VERY HARD TO CONTROL MY STEERING AND JERKS WHEN I ACCELERATE AND/OR CHANGE GEARS. IT ALSO BECOMES A LITTLE HARDER TO COME TO A COMPETE STOP. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY GREASED THE WIRES THINKING THAT IT WAS A CONNECTION PROBLEM. IT WORKED ALRIGHT FOR ABOUT A MONTH AND A HALF BUT THEN THE LIGHT FLASHED ON AGAIN ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO AND HAS FLASHED ON RANDOMLY EVER SINCE. THIS SEEMS TO BE AN ONGOING PROBLEM. *TR

THE FAILURE OCCURRED 3 TO 4 TIMES A WEEK. HE TURNED THE IGNITION OFF AND RESTARTED IT; THE FAILURE APPEARED TO RESET THE POWER STEERING AND IT FAILED WITHIN 5 TO 10 MINUTES. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING WAS THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. HE HAD NOT SPOKEN WITH THE MANUFACTURER TO-DATE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 80,779. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 70,000.
~DEAR SIR/MA'AM~ HELLO. MY NAME IS [XXX]. I DRIVE A 2005 CHEVY COBALT. I LOVE THE CAR, BUT THERE IS A PROBLEM AND I DON'T KNOW WHO TO CONTACT. I HOPE THIS IS THE RIGHT PLACE. I DO NOT KNOW A LOT ABOUT CARS, BUT AS I WAS DRIVING TO WORK YESTERDAY AND I TRIED TO GET IN THE TURNING LANE BUT NOT KNOWING MY POWER STEERING PUMP HAD JUST STOPPED WORKING FOR SOME REASON AND I ALMOST SMASHED INTO THE BACK END OF A SEMI AND I WAS GOING 45MPH. I CONTACTED THE PLACE I BOUGHT MY CAR FROM (GATEWAY CHEVROLET-FARGO , ND ), AND THEY SAID THEY WILL ONLY FIX IT IF I GET INTO AN ACCIDENT OF SOME SORT. ALL I HAVE IS THE POWER TRAIN WARRANTY LEFT FOR COVERAGE, AND THAT DOESN'T COVER THE POWER STEERING. THE CAR IS ONLY AT 55,478 MILES AND THEY WILL ONLY HELP ME IF I GET INTO AN ACCIDENT? THAT IS NOT RIGHT. I DON'T CARE WHO YOU ARE, THAT IS NOT RIGHT. MY HUSBAND ACTUALLY WAS LOOKING ONLINE TODAY AND IT IS A COMMON THING IN CHEVY COBALTS. THERE HAS BEEN AT LEAST ONE FATALITY FROM THE POWER STEERING NOT WORKING IN ANOTHER VICTIMS COBALT, YET THEY STILL HAVE NOT PUT OUT A RECALL ON IT. I DON'T UNDERSTAND. I GAVE A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT TO MY DAUGHTER, BOUGHT THE CAR SECOND HAND @ APPROXIMATELY 40,000KM IT NOW HAS APPROX 55,000 KM. WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR I ASKED THE DEALER FOR A MAINTENANCE PRINT OUT AND THERE WAS NO REFERENCE TO STEERING ISSUES.TWICE SINCE LAST NOVEMBER THE STEERING LOCKS ON HER WHILE DRIVING, SHE DESCRIBES IT AS VERY HARD TO STEER, RATTLING NOISE AND JERKING IN THE STEERING. TEH FIRST TIME SHE PULLED OFF THE HWY AND DROVE HOME ON THE SHOULDER, SHE CALLED ME UP TO DESCRIBE THE PROBLEM, I THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE POWER STEERING FLUID ONLY TO FIND OUT IT IS ELECTRONIC SYSTEM. BOTH TIMES I CALLED THE DEALER BUT HE WAS NOT REALLY OFFERING ANY SOLLUTION, HE ONLY TOLD ME HE WAS AWARE THAT IT HAD OCCURED ON OTHER COBALTS AND IT COULD COST UP TO $2000 TO REPAIR. TODAY I SAW ON THE INTERNET THAT GM WAS UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR HUNDREDS OF CRASHES DUE TO THIS PROBLEM....DO THEY HAVE A SOLUTION FOR THIS PROBLEM AND IF THEY DO WHAT IS MY RECOURSE...I AM CONCERNED FOR THE SAFETY OF MY DAUGHTER. *CN

I HAVE 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT SS/SC THAT I BOUGHT NEW IN MAY 2005. ABOUT 3 WEEKS AGO THE POWER STEERING STARTED TO MALFUNCTION. THE CAR HAD APPROXIMATELY 29,000 MILES ON IT AT THAT TIME - IT NOW HAS APPROXIMATELY 30,600 MILES. THE POWER STEERING STOPS WORKING - THE WARNING SYSTEM CHIMES AND A MESSAGE "POWER STEERING" IS DISPLAYED ON THE COMPUTER DISPLAY. WHEN THIS HAPPENS THE CAR IS HARD TO STEER AND CONTROL. WHAT BEGAN AS INFREQUENT AND INTERMITTENT PROBLEM HAS BECOME A PROBLEM THAT OCCURS EACH THE CAR IS DRIVEN NOW, OCCURRING WITHIN MINUTES IF NOT SECONDS EACH TIME THE CAR IS DRIVEN. I DEAL WITH THIS PROBLEM BY PULLING OVER, TURNING THE CAR OFF FOR A SHORT TIME AND RESTARTING THE CAR. I DO THIS BECAUSE THE POWER STEERING IS RESET EACH TIME THE CAR IS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED. THE POWER STEERING THEN BEGINS TO FUNCTION AGAIN ONLY TO FAIL AGAIN AFTER A SHORT TIME. I TOOK IT A DEALER ON 12/03/2009 AND THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT FOUND A POSSIBLE POOR CONNECTION AT THE PSCM AND MOTOR. DIELECTRIC GREASE WAS APPLIED TO THE CONNECTIONS AND RECONNECTED. THERE IS TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN (070232007B) FOR THIS PROBLEM. *TR

SHE WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE TO RESUME NORMAL VEHICLE OPERATION. SHE WAS IN THE PROCESS OF TAKING THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE CURRENT AND THE FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 130,000.

THE FAILURE WAS CONTRIBUTED TO THE POWER STEERING MOTOR. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE CONTACT HAD CONCERN OF THE SAFETY RISK INVOLVED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 32,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 33,000.

THE DEALERSHIP IS WELL AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT THEIR HANDS ARE TIED BECAUSE NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED. WHEN YOU SPEND THE MONEY TO REPLACE THE RACK AND PINION AND THE POWER STEERING MOTOR IT IS A NEW DESIGN SO CHEVY IS OBVIOUSLY AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BECAUSE THEY REDESIGNED THE FAULTY PART. I WILL PAY THE $2,000 TO GET MY SON'S CAR REPAIRED BECAUSE HIS SAFETY IS A PRIORITY. WHAT I DON'T UNDERSTAND IS WITH THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS HOW HAS CHEVY GOTTEN AWAY WITH NOT ISSUING A RECALL. MOST RECENTLY, IT CAME ON AND SO DID A "POWER STEERING" MESSAGE. IMMEDIATELY AFTER, MY STEERING LOCKED UP AND BECAME ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO STEER. THE WORST PART OF THIS IS THAT THERE WAS NO WARNING AND IT BEING WINTER THERE WAS ICE EVERYWHERE. I FOUND MYSELF SLIDING ACROSS THE FREE WAY.
