ABOUT A YEAR AGO OUR FAMILY'S 2005 CHEVY COBALT THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT AND WENT OUT EVERY ONCE IN AWHILE. NOW IT IS GOING OUT MORE FREQUENT AND GOES OUT AS SOON AS NOT EVEN GOING 1/2 MILE DOWN THE ROAD. WHEN IT GOES OUT YOU WILL HEAR A CLICK AND GETS HARD TO STEER NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE YET TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM. *TR
POWER STEERING LIGHT COMES ON. THEN THE POWER STEERING GO OUT. THIS SEEMS TO HAPPEN MORE OFTEN WHEN THE TEMPERATURE OUTSIDE IS HOT. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE POWER STEERING IN THE VEHICLE FAILS INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH ELECTRICAL POWER STEERING. WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE POWER STEERING STOPPED WORKING AND ALMOST CAUSED THE DRIVER TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. HE BELIEVES THAT THERE IS A DEFECT THAT COULD POSSIBLY LEAD TO A CRASH. THE FAILURE HAS OCCURRED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY REPLACED THE POWER ASSIST SYSTEM AND THE STEERING COLUMN. THROUGH ONLINE RESEARCH, THE CONTACT FOUND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ON THIS SAME FAILURE AND BELIEVES THAT A RECALL SHOULD BE ISSUED AND THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 46,000.
POWER STEERING FAILURE ON 2005 CHEVY COBALT. HAS HAPPENED OFF AND ON APPROX. 5 TIMES. STEERING BECAME DIFFICULT AT LOW SPEEDS. NO ACCIDENTS. *TR
I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGH AND ALL OF A SUDDEN MY POWER STEERING CAME ON AND HAS BEEN FOR 2 MONTHS NOW. I HAVE LOOKED UP THE ISSUE AND I AM NOT THE ONLY OWNER OF COBALT TO HAVE THESE PROBLEMS. I HAVE THE 2005 COBALT SS SUPERCHARGED WIT 84,000 MILES ON IT. *TR
NO EVENTS LEADING TO FAILURE. CHEVY COBALT 2005 MODEL 33,000 MILES POWER STEERING RANDOM CATASTROPHIC FAILURE KEY STICKS IN IGNITION NOTHING WAS DONE TO CORRECT THE FAILURE BY THE MANUFACTURER (NO RECALL) EVEN THOUGH MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS AND PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED WITH THE POWER STEERING IN THESE MODELS. *TR
CHEVROLET COBALT 2005 POWER STEERING FAILURE. BEGAN FAILING SPORADICALLY THEN FAILED CONSISTENTLY DAILY IN MAY OF 2009.......HAD POWER STEERING COLUMN REPLACED. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH ON NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS, THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED AND THE POWER STEERING WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE WARNING INDICATOR REMAINED LIT UNTIL THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO RESUME NORMAL OPERATION; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED THREE TIMES WHILE DRIVING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING AND THE STEERING COLUMN CODE WAS REPROGRAMMED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR IDENTICAL FAILURES. CURRENTLY, THE STEERING COLUMN IS BEING REPLACED. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 54,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. SPORADICALLY, WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE ELECTRICAL POWER STEERING WILL FAIL. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A DEALER AND THEY SPECULATED THAT JUMPSTARTING OTHER VEHICLES COULD POTENTIALLY CAUSE A SHORTAGE OF ELECTRICITY TO THE COMPONENT. AFTER THE DIAGNOSIS, THE ENTIRE POWER STEERING WAS REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY WERE UNAWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 53,890.
ENGINE WOULD NOT TURN OVER NO ELECTRICAL CONNECTION THIS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES DURING OWNERSHIP.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT EXPERIENCES PERIODIC POWER STEERING FAILURE WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS. THE STEERING WHEEL CANNOT TURN TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT AND SHE MUST TURN AND PULL THE WHEEL WITH GREAT FORCE TO PULL THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT YET BEEN TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000.
THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING ON MY 2005 CHEVY COBALT SHUTS OFF WHILE DRIVING, CAUSING MY VEHICLE TO BE MORE DIFFICULT TO STEER. I JUST PURCHASED A 2005 CHEVY COBALT AS MY WIFE DROVE IT TO THE STORE THE POWER STEERING LOCKED UP & SHUT OFF SHE ALMOST GOT INTO A WRECK SHE HAD TO FORCE CAR OFF THE ROAD. SPOKE TO A CHEVY MECHANIC SAID THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH 2005-2006 CHEVY COBALTS, THIS IS A DEFECT IN THE STEERING COLUMN. LOOKED ON THE INTERNET & THERE ARE LOTS OF PEOPLE WITH THIS MODEL HAVING THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM YET THERE IS NO RECALL FROM GM. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD MY WIFE COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED SHOULD THESE VEHICLES BE ON THE ROAD? PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS PROBLEM. WE HAD THE CAR FOR 3 DAYS NOW AND IT HAPPENED 4 TIMES IT IS NOW IN THE HANDS OF A MECHANIC. *TR
POWERSTEERING AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COME ON. THERE IS THEN NO POWERSTEERING AND THE CAR LURCHES FORWARD AS I ACCELERATE. WHEN STOPPING THE CAR ACTS AS THOUGH IT IS GOING TO STALL. THE SPEEDOMETER DOES NOT KEEP SPEED THE NEEDLE JUST MOVES UP AND DOWN. TOOK CAR IN TO CHEVY DEALER WHILE STILL UNDER WARRANTY BUT THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT FIND PROBLEM. THE CAR CONTINUES TO DO THIS JUST ABOUT EVERY DAY AND NOW IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. *TR
THERE WERE NO EVENTS THAT LED UP TO THIS POWER STEERING JUST WENT OUT. A MONTH BEFORE WE HAD THE KEY STUCK IN IGNITION PROBLEM. PAID $300 TO GET THAT FIXED NOW IT IS BACK IN THE SHOP FOR POWER STEERING FAILURE. I CALLED GM ABOUT THIS AND THE REP SAID THEY HAD NO OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS ISSUE. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? I TOLD HIM IT WAS ALL OVER SITES ON THE INTERNET AND HE SAID I SHOULDN'T PAY ANY ATTENTION TO THAT AS GM HAS NO POWER OVER WHAT PEOPLE REPORTED ON THESE SITES AND THEY SHOULD CONTACT GM. HE AGAIN TRIED TO TELL ME THAT I WAS THE ONLY ONE REPORTING THIS PROBLEM!! *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE RESIDENCE, AND THEN TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN REPLACED THE STEERING COLUMN AND THE BUSHINGS AT THE COST OF $1322. A RECALL NOTIFICATION WAS RECEIVED AFTER THE SERVICE REPAIR. THE DEFECT WAS RELATED TO THE RECALL UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 10V073000 (COMPONENT: STEERING: ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST THE MANUFACTURER REFUSED TO REIMBURSE FOR THE PRIOR REPAIR RELATED TO THE RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 77,909.
POWER STEERING STOPS DURING DRIVING (ELECTRIC). MY DAUGHTER WAS ALMOST INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT WHEN THIS HAPPEN. *TR
ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING FAILS AT 40,000 MILES!!! GM IS CLAIMING IT IS NOT A "DEFECT" AND ALSO REQUIRING THE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN BE REPLACED. *TR
1. POWER STEERING LIGHT COMES UP WHILE DRIVING AND POWER STEERING GOES OFF/LOCKED, I CAN'T MOVE EITHER RIGHT OR LEFT. 2. IT OCCURS EVERY WHEN YOU DRIVE THE VEHICLE. 3. THIS IS PROBLEM WITH ELECTRICAL POWER STEERING FOR CHEVY COBALT 2005. *TR
[XXX]. WAS FRONT PASSENGER IN A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT DRIVEN BY HIS COUSIN [XXX]. ON APRIL 19TH, 2009. [XXX] LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND SEVERELY WRECKED THE VEHICLE. [XXX] WAS STUCK UNDER THE VEHICLE FOR APPROXIMATELY 4 HOURS AND HAD TO BE AIR LIFTED TO RICHLAND MEMORIAL HOSPITAL WHEN EMERGENCY PERSONNEL ARRIVED. [XXX] WAS SEVERELY INJURED AND SUFFERED LIFE TIME INJURIES. [XXX] AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY WHICH CAUSED HIM TO SUFFER MORE EXTENSIVE INJURIES THAN HE WOULD HAVE IF THE AIRBAGS DID DEPLOY. [XXX]. LATER FOUND OUT THAT GM HAD KNOWN OF THE PROBLEMS WITH THE AIRBAG SYSTEM IN THE 2005-2006 CHEVROLET COBALT VEHICLES BUT NOT REPORT THIS UNTIL AFTER [XXX] WAS SEVERELY INJURED ON APRIL 19TH, 2009. [XXX] SUFFERED A BROKEN NECK, BROKEN BONE IN HIS RIGHT FOOT, HIS RIGHT HIP WAS KNOCKED OUT OF JOINT, ALSO SEVERE BACK AND SPINE PAIN. IGNITION KEY STICKS IN THE "ACC" POSITION AT SHUT DOWN ABOUT 80% OF THE TIME. RESTARTING THE CAR OR PUSHING UP UNDER THE KEY CYLINDER SOMETIMES RELEASES IT. I'VE GONE TO TWO DEALERS SO FAR AND ALL I GET IS YUP ITS STUCK...MAYBE ITS THE SHIFTER MAYBE ITS THE IGNITION. THAT'S NOT A GREAT RESPONSE TO HEAR. THIS IS ON 05 CHEVY COBALT LS COUPE. *TR
I HAVE A 2005 CHEVY COBALT. SHORTLY AFTER I WENT OVER 100,000 MILES, MY POWER STEERING WENT OUT WHILE ON THE FREEWAY. I EXITED THE FREEWAY AND PULLED INTO A GAS STATION AND SHUT THE CAR OFF. I COULD NOT FIND THE POWER STEERING OIL RESERVOIR TO CHECK MY LEVELS. GOT IN MY CAR AND THE POWER STEERING WAS JUST FINE. OVER THE NEXT WEEK, IT WENT OUT 4 TO 5 TIMES RANDOMLY. I CHECKED THE WEB FOR THIS PROBLEM AND FOUND THAT IT IS AN INHERENT PROBLEM WITH THE ELECTRIC MOTOR GM PUT INTO THIS VEHICLE (PLUS OTHER MODELS). SINCE IT STARTED, IT GOES OUT ANYWHERE FROM ONCE A DAY TO 7-10 DAYS A DAY. THE PROBLEM IS COMPLETELY RANDOM. AFTER FINDING OUT THAT MANY OTHER COBALT OWNERS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM, AND THE FACT THAT IT IS A DANGER TO OPERATE WHEN IT SUDDENLY GOES OUT, I FEEL THAT GM NEEDS TO DO A RECALL ON THIS MOTOR. JUST BECAUSE PEOPLE HAVE NOT DIED IN MASS NUMBERS BECAUSE OF THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT THIS PROBLEM IS NOT DANGEROUS. *TR

THE DEALER STATED THAT A NEW STEERING COLUMN WAS NEEDED. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AT THE TIME OF THE FAILURE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 34,950. IN APRIL OF 2009, THE POWER STEERING ON MY 2005 CHEVY COBALT STARTED GOING OUT WHENEVER I WOULD GET SLOWER THAN 50 MPH. ON APRIL 22, 2009, I HAD TO HAVE MY STEERING COLUMN REPLACED. I UNDERSTAND NOW THAT THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE MODEL DUE TO THIS STEERING PROBLEM. I WOULD LIKE TO BE REIMBURSED FOR THE AMOUNT I HAD TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR JOB. THANK YOU. *TR

POWER STEERING GOES OUT INSTANTLY WHEN I START TO DRIVE. TURNING THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON AGAIN MAKE IT WORK AGAIN FOR ONLY FOR A VERY SHORT TIME, ABOUT 2 MINS. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO DRIVE WITHOUT THE POWER STEERING. I'M BARELY 100LBS AND IT'S NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE. MY ARMS ARE VERY SORE & MY RIGHT ARM I HAVING PROBLEMS I BELIEVE DUE TO HAVING TO DRIVE THIS CAR W/O POWER STEERING. IT ALSO PRESENT A VERY SERIOUS DRIVING HAZARD AS I'VE ALREADY NEARLY ESCAPED SEVERAL CRASHES AT HIGH SPEEDS BY NOT BEING ABLE TO TURN THE CAR FAST ENOUGH. I HAVE READ NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ON THIS ISSUE AND FIND IT EXTREMELY HARD TO BELIEVE THAT THIS MODEL HAS NOT BEEN RECALLED ENTIRELY DUE TO NOT ONLY THIS ISSUE BUT MANY OTHERS I'VE READ AS WELL. POWER STEERING MESSAGE AND FAILURE BEGAN IN APRIL 2009. POWER STEERING FAILS AND DISPLAYS MESSAGE AT RANDOM DURING TURNS, STRAIGHT, HIGH OR LOW SPEEDS, AND WILL USUALLY RESET AFTER ENGINE SHUT OFF AND RESTART. THIS FAILURE AND MESSAGE CAN HAPPEN SEVERAL TIMES A DAY. CALLED GM AFTER FINDING SIMILAR OCCURRENCES ON THE INTERNET; THEY RECOMMENDED A DIAGNOSTIC AT THEIR DEALERSHIP. DIAGNOSTIC REVEALED A C0475 CODE, WHICH IS A STEERING COLUMN MOTOR SHORT. THE RECOMMENDED COURSE OF ACTION WAS TO REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMN FOR $880 P&L. MILEAGE OF 2005 COBALT IS ALMOST 80,000. THIS POWER STEERING FAILURE IS A HUGE CONCERN FOR ME SINCE IT IS MY WIFE'S CAR. IT IS VERY POSSIBLE FOR THE FAILURE TO OCCUR JUST BEFORE OR DURING A NEEDED REACTION TO AN EMERGENCY SITUATION, OR COULD EVEN CAUSE AN ADVERSE REACTION IF FAILURE OCCURS DURING A HIGH-SPEED TURN. THIS CAR ISN'T NEARLY OLD ENOUGH TO "THROW AWAY" AND GET SOMETHING NEWER, YET THE PRICE OF THE PART AND REPAIRS SEEMS TO SUGGEST IT IS TIME TO DO SO. IT'S TOO BAD FOR US WE OWE MORE THAN IT'S WORTH... AND NOW THIS. *TR

STEERING MOTOR WAS DETERMINED DEFECTIVE BY GM AT 50K MILES. TIRES WOOD CATCH GROOVES IN THE ROAD PULLING THE CAR UNEXPECTEDLY. SHUTTERING OF STEERING WHEEL WHILE GOING STRAIGHT. KNOCKING/ RATTLE SOUNDS FROM STEERING COLUMN ON ROUGH/ BUMPY ROADS. THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. THESE PROBLEMS STARTED ABOUT 35K, RIGHT AFTER MY WARRANTY EXPIRED. AFTER CONTACTING GM AND A CHEVY DEALERSHIP, THE COST WILL BE $850. AND IT IS A "COMMON PROBLEM", DESIGN ERROR. AT 52K DRIVING NORMALLY DOWN THE ROAD, POWER STEERING SHUT OFF, "POWER STEERING" DISPLAYED, AND THE STEERING WHEEL WAS EXCESSIVELY HARD TO TURN. *TR
I'M MAKING A COMPLAINT ABOUT THE 2005-2009 CHEVY COBALT POWER STEERING. I DRIVE A 2005 CHEVY COBALT LS AND LAST APRIL 2009, I NOTICED MY POWER STEERING GOING OUT. I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF NO WHERE IN NEW YORK STATE WITH A 2 YEAR OLD IN THE CAR WITH ME. SINCE THEN IT HAS GONE OUT COMPLETELY WITH ABOUT A 2 MIN WINDOW THAT I DO HAVE IT AFTER I START THE CAR. I HAD CONTACTED GM THROUGH EMAIL, HAD A DIAGNOSIS RAN ON IT AND REPORTED IT BACK TO THEM, WHEN ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT THEY COULD NOT HELP ME WITH IT. I DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO REPAIR IT KNOWING THAT I NEED A NEW STEERING COLUMN TO FIX IT. SO I DO NOT HAVE ANY POWER STEERING AND ON TOP OF THAT THE SENSOR FOR THE AIR BAGS COMES ON TOO. THESE TWO PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN VERY SCARY FOR ME AND MY 2 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER. *TR
2005 CHEVY. COBALT ELECTRIC POWER STEERING UNIT IN STEERING COLUMN FAILED WHILE DRIVING. THIS FAILURE OCCURRED AT 40,222 MILES AND HAPPENED ABOUT 15X . ABSOLUTELY NO STEERING WAS POSSIBLE, AND THIS HAPPENED IN TRAFFIC, ONCE THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF I HAD STEERING AGAIN, THEN WITHIN SECONDS I WOULD GET THE MESSAGE POWER STEERING AND THE STEERING WOULD BE GONE AGAIN. THE COST TO REPAIR WAS $849.00 AND ONLY GM HAS THE PART. FROM THE INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET, THIS IS A DEFECT WITH THE PART, AND GM HAS KNOWN ABOUT IT SINCE FALL OF 2005. THE SHOP MANAGER AT HUDIBURG CHEVY. WAS NOT AWARE OF ANY PROBLEMS BUT WHEN HE ASKED HIS TICKET WRITER, HE ACKNOWLEDGED HE HAS SEEN ALOT OF THIS PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL VEHICLE. *TR
A HOSE FROM THE FUEL TANK TO THE EVAP CANISTER, CAME OFF ALLOWING EXPLOSIVE GASOLINE VAPORS TO ENTER THE AIR. THIS HOSE IS PRESSED ON WITH NO CLAMP HOLDING THE HOSE IN PLACE ON THE FUEL TANK. THERE IS A POSITIVE LOCK ON THE EVAP CANISTER SIDE OF THE HOSE, BUT NOTHING HOLDING THE HOSE TO THE FUEL TANK. THE NEW FUEL TANK, (TANK AND HOSE ONE ITEM), ALSO HAS NO CLAMP AT THE FUEL TANK. IN ADDITION TO ALLOWING EXPLOSIVE VAPORS INTO THE AIR, THE COST OF THE REPAIR IS HUGE. THE TANK ASSEMBLY, (THE HOSE AND FUEL TANK ARE ONE ITEM), IS $500, PLUS INSTALLATION. CHEVY AND GM WERE NOTIFIED AND I WAS TOLD, "THE PARTS ARE OFF THE VEHICLE AND NOTHING WILL BE DONE ABOUT THIS." TO FIND THIS DEFECT, THE PARTS , (TANK), MUST BE REMOVED FROM THE VEHICLE. THE CAR HAS 45000 MILES AND HAS NEVER BEEN IN A CRASH OR HAD ANY DAMAGE TO IT. THIS HOSE HAS NO TENSION ON IT, JUST THE LACK OF A CLAMP ALLOWING IT TO COME LOOSE. THE GASOLINE VAPORS ESCAPING FROM THE TANK IN AN ENCLOSED AREA, LIKE A GARAGE, COULD LEAD TO AN EXPLOSION AND FIRE, (I'M A RETIRED FIREFIGHTER). DAMAGE TO THE ENVIRONMENT BY ESCAPING GASOLINE VAPORS ALSO OCCURS, (THAT'S WHY THE HOSE IS THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE). THIS NEGLIGENCE IN THE DESIGN ON THE PART OF GM COULD BE CORRECTED WITH A SIMPLE LOW COST CLAMP ON THE HOSE. THIS DEFECT CAUSES THE CONSUMER TO SPEND A LARGE AMOUNT OF MONEY NEEDLESSLY, EXPOSES THE ENVIRONMENT TO GASOLINE VAPOR DAMAGE AND COULD POTENTIALLY EXPLODE, KILLING SOMEONE. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS A FUEL LINE LEAK IN HIS VEHICLE. IN MARCH OF 2009, HE SMELLED FUEL COMING FROM THE VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING AND ALSO WHILE IT WAS PARKED. THE DEALER HAS NOT BEEN NOTIFIED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 12,062 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 11,538.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING THE POWER STEERING FAILED INTERMITTENTLY SINCE MARCH 2009. THE CONTACT HAD TO SHUT THE ENGINE OFF AND RESTART THE VEHICLE TO RESET THE POWER STEERING. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE STEERING COLUMN NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 51,784. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 42,500.
I PURCHASED A 2005 CHEVY COBALT IN AUGUST OF 2005. LESS THEN A WEEK AFTER PURCHASING THE VEHICLE IT WAS IN THE SHOP TO BE FIXED. I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE STEERING PANEL (KEY WILL NOT COME OUT OF THE IGNITION, BUTTON ON STICK SHIFT STICKS, CAN NOT TURN CAR OFF WITHOUT DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY), I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE POWER WINDOWS AND LOCKS, I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE STEREO GOING INTO "LOCK" MODE - WHICH IN TURN MAKES ME TURN THE CAR ON AND THEN OFF AGAIN TO GET THE RADIO TO WORK. I LOOKED INTO THE LEMON LAW AND THEY STATED SINCE IT WAS ALL ELECTRICAL, THEY COULD NOT PIN POINT IT TO BEING THE SAME PROBLEM ALL 5 TIMES OF IT BEING IN. WELL, IT HAS DONE IT AGAIN NOW IN MARCH OF 2009. THEY ARE STATING THAT ME EXTENDED WARRANTY THROUGH NATIONAL WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER THIS THEREFORE I HAVE TO PAY $400 TO FIX SOMETHING THAT SEEMS TO BE A DEFAULT ON THIS CAR. IT IS NOT YET 4 YEARS OLD. I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR. I TRIED TRADING IT IN, BUT I WAS LAID OFF LAST YEAR AND MAKE LESS MONEY AND DO NOT HAVE THE BEST CREDIT BECAUSE OF NOT WORKING FOR ALMOST A YEAR. I HATE THIS CAR AND AFTER THE CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THE PROBLEMS I HAVE HAD WITH THIS CAR, I WILL NEVER PURCHASE A CHEVY AGAIN!! 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT - POWER STEERING INTERMITTENTLY GOES OUT. *TR
BOUGHT 2005 CHEVY COBALT NEW. AT ABOUT 40K MILES OF NORMAL DRIVING THE POWER STEERING BEGAN TO FAIL. AFTER RESTARTING THE CAR, THE POWER STEERING WOULD BE FINE FOR UP TO A MONTH, THEN UP TO A WEEK, AND FINALLY IT WOULD FAIL AFTER THE 1ST TURN I MADE AFTER STARTING THE CAR. I AM NOT A WILD DRIVER & I ONLY DRIVE ABOUT 5 MILES PER DAY ON SIDE STREETS. I HAD TO PAY CHEVY $48 TO CHECK THE CAR, AND THEN $800 TO A LOCAL MECHANIC TO HAVE THE PROBLEM FIXED AFTER I FOUND THAT MY CAR WAS NOT RECALLED FOR THIS PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD THAT CHEVY WOULDN'T SELL JUST THE ONE PIECE THAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED (SOME KIND OF CONTROL MODULE) SO THERE WAS NO OTHER CHOICE BUT TO HAVE THE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN REPLACED. THE OLD PART IS NOT AVAILABLE. I HAVE SEEN HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC PROBLEM ONLINE. ALL IT TAKES IS FOR THIS PROBLEM TO HAPPEN TO A 16 YEAR OLD GIRL ON THE ROAD AND WE NOW HAVE A DEATH ON OUR HANDS. *TR
THERE WERE NO EVENTS LEADING UP TO THE FAILURE; IT JUST HAPPENED. THE IGNITION CONTROL MODULE HAS BEEN REPLACED TWICE IN 4 YEARS ON MY 2005 COBALT. THE FIRST TIME WAS 2 WEEKS AFTER I BOUGHT THE CAR SO IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY. THE SECOND TIME IT COST ME OVER $600 DOLLARS TO HAVE IT FIXED. THE ODOMETER WILL READ "ICE POSSIBLE" WHEN IT'S 80 DEGREES OUTSIDE AND THE BRAKE DUMMY LIGHT COMES ON ALL THE TIME. THE RADIO WILL DISPLAY A "LOCK" ON IT AND THE RADIO WON'T WORK. JUST RECENTLY THE REAR DEFOGGER QUIT WORKING. I REPLACED THE FUSE AND RELAY SWITCH THINKING THIS WOULD BE QUICK FIX AND NEITHER WORKED. THE 2005 COBALT HAS MANY ISSUES AND I'VE READ OF OTHERS WITH ISSUES SIMILAR TO MINE. NEW CARS AREN'T SUPPOSED TO HAVE THIS MANY PROBLEMS THIS SOON. MY CAR IS ONLY 4 YEARS OLD AND I CAN'T WAIT TO GET RID OF IT! *TR
THERE WAS NOTHING UNUSUAL LEADING UP TO THE INCIDENT. EARLY MARCH 2009 POWERSTEERING WENT OUT ON MY 2005 CHEVY COBALT. WHEN STARTING THE CAR, POWERSTEERING WOULD ONLY STAY ON FOR ABOUT 5 MINUTES. TO REGAIN IT I WOULD HAVE TO SHUT DOWN THE VEHICLE AND RESTART IT. THIS LASTED ABOUT THREE MONTHS. IT WAS TAKEN TO TWO DIFFERENT SHOPS, SEARS AND A CAR DEALERSHIP AND BOTH RAN DIAGNOSTICS WHICH FOUND NOTHING WRONG. THEY COULD NOT TELL ME WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS FOR SURE EXCEPT TO SAY PERHAPS PUTTING IN A WHOLE NEW POWER STEERING SYSTEM WOULD HELP. THOUGH THEY DID NOT KNOW FOR SURE. WHEN I CALLED THE CHEVY DEALERSHIP THEMSELVES THEY STATED THEY DID NOT HAVE ANY PREVIOUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE POWERSTEERING IN THAT YEAR AND MODEL AND WANTED TO RUN THEIR OWN DIAGNOSTICS, THAT I HAD TO PAY FOR. I REFUSED SINCE THE SECOND DEALER I TOOK THE CAR TO WAS A CHEVY DEALER AND WAS TOLD BY THE COMPANY I HAD TO PAY FOR ANOTHER DIAGNOSTIC CHECK. THE PROBLEM DISAPPEARED IN JULY OF 09 ONLY TO COME BACK NOW DEC 09. THE CARS POWERSTEERING IS OFF WITHIN A MINUTE OF ENGINE START. WITH THE SNOWY WEATHER THIS IS A HAZARD TO ME AND ANYONE ELSE WITH SIMILAR ISSUES; AND I HAVE CHRONIC BACK PROBLEMS AS WELL. THE PULLING OF THE STEERING WHEEL JUST TO TURN THE CAR HAS HAD ME IN BEDREST TWICE NOW. *TR

THE POWER STEERING GOES IN AND OUT INTERMITTENTLY. THERE IS NO WARNING. PARTICULARITY TURNING CURVES AND CORNERS. THE DASH BOARD WARNING SYSTEMS WARNS OF THIS AFTER THE FACT AND YOU'RE IN PANIC MODE. WHEN YOU SHUT DOWN AND RESTART IT PERFORMS NORMALLY FOR A WHILE AND DOES IT AGAIN. ALSO, WHEN GOING AROUND CURVES OR MAKING 90 DEGREE TURNS, THE STEERING "SLIPS" AND BUMPS AS IF YOU'VE RUN OVER SOMETHING. ITS AS IF THE JOINTS OF THE CAR AREN'T FITTED TOGETHER PROPERTY. *TR

POWER STEERING LIGHT COMES ON AND POWER STEERING FAILS WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AT 70MPH. THIS INCIDENT HAPPENED ABOUT A YEAR AGO, MY CARS POWER WOULD COMPLETELY SHUT OFF AND MY CAR WOULD GO FROM 70MPH TO 10 MPH IN ABOUT HALF A SECOND WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE. I WILL NEVER BUY A COBALT AGAIN. I HAD THE ISSUE FIXED, OR SO I THOUGHT LAST YEAR, BUT BECAUSE IT HAPPENED AGAIN TONIGHT, IT LOOKS LIKE IT WAS NOT RESOLVED. *TR

SHE TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF AND WITHIN A FEW MINUTES SHE WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE MANUALLY TO HER RESIDENCE. SHE DID NOT SEE ANY WARNING LIGHTS ON THE INSTRUMENTAL PANEL. MY 2005 CHEVY COBALT BEGINS TO SHAKE WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY. I CAN FEEL THE VIBRATION STARTING THROUGH THE FLOOR BOARD AND EVENTUALLY THE WHOLE FRONT END BEGINS TO SHAKE. THE STEERING WHEEL VIOLENTLY SHAKES FROM FRONT TO BACK(VERSUS SIDE TO SIDE) AND THE VEHICLE IS HARD TO CONTROL. I ALWAYS HAVE TO PULL OVER OR GET OFF THE FREEWAY. IT FEELS LIKE THE WHOLE FRONT END IS GOING TO FALL APART. AFTER COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP I CAN CONTINUE TO DRIVE WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS. THIS BEGAN ALMOST A YEAR AGO. I HAVE HAD MY CAR LOOKED AT SEVERAL TIMES AND THE SHOCKS REPLACED LAST YEAR WHEN IT BEGAN. EACH TIME I TAKE IT AND SOMEONE TEST DRIVES THEY CANNOT FIND A PROBLEM. THEY ALSO TELL ME THAT MY CAR IS IN NEAR PERFECT CONDITION. BUT IT CONTINUES TO SHAKE ALL THE TIME. SOMETIMES IT WON'T HAPPEN FOR A WEEK OR TWO, SOMETIMES IT HAPPENS TWO OR THREE TIMES A WEEK. I HAVE ALSO REPLACED THE TWO FRONT TIRES IN HOPES THAT IT WOULD CORRECT THE PROBLEM. *TR
