POWER STEERING IN MY 2005 CHEVY COBALT AS GONE OUT. *TR
ELECTRIC POWER STEERING PROBLEM. INDICATOR LIGHT TURNS ON AND CAR LOSES POWER STEERING CONTROL.....VERY DANGEROUS. *TR
POWERSTEERING ON MY CAR KEEPS COMING ON. AND MAKES ALOT OF NOISE. *TR
THERE WERE NO DEATHS, NO ACCIDENT, BUT THERE COULD HAVE BEEN IF I WAS MAKING A FAST TURN. AND WE SHOULDN'T WAIT TILL SOMEONE GETS INJURED OR KILLED BEFORE THIS PROBLEM SHOULD BE RECALLED. DRIVING ALONG, MAKING A TURN ON A QUITE STREET AND POWER STEERING JUST SHUT DOWN, I HEARD A WARNING BEEP AT THE SAME TIME I LOST MY POWER STEERING AND QUICKLY HAD TO FIGHT WITH THE CAR TO FINISH MAKING MY TURN. THE WARNING BEEP WAS WHEN THE WORDS "POWER STEERING" APPEARED IN THE DISPLAY WHERE IT SHOULD TEMP, AND MILEAGE. IT HAPPENED AT THE SAME TIME AS THE WARNING BEEP. THE WHOLE ELECTRIC STEERING COLUMN HAD TO BE REPLACED. WAS ALSO TOLD, THERE WAS A TECHNICAL BULLETIN ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, BUT NO NOTIFICATION TO OWNERS THAT THIS COULD HAPPEN TO YOU WHILE DRIVING. *TR
ELECTRIC POWER STEERING CUTS OUT AFTER DRIVING THE CAR FOR ABOUT THE FIRST 3-5 MINUTES. *TR
FOR THE PAST MONTH, MY COBALT HAS BEEN HAVING THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COME ON WHILE I AM DRIVING, HAPPENING INTERMITTENTLY. CONCURRENTLY WITH THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMING ON, THE RPM NEEDLE DROPS AND YOU CAN FEEL MUCH LESS POWER. SOMETIMES STALLING ALSO OCCURS, (MOST LIKELY AT STOPLIGHTS/STOP SIGNS) AND ALSO OCCURRING IN GROUPS. ON DAYS WHEN THE CAR IS RUNNING WITH NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMING ON, THERE WILL BE NO STALLING. THE CAR WILL GO FOR A DAY OR TWO WITH NO PROBLEMS, BUT ALWAYS REVERTS BACK TO THE CHECK ENGINE/STALL PROBLEM. AND THERE WAS ONE TIME WHEN I WENT OUT TO GET PIZZA. I PARKED THE CAR, WENT TO THE PIZZA PLACE, AND WHEN I CAME BACK TO START THE CAR, NOT A LIGHT NOR A SOUND WAS MADE WHEN I TURNED THE KEY. I TRIED THIS SEVERAL TIMES OVER A 20 MINUTE PERIOD. THE CAR WAS UTTERLY DEAD. THAT ONLY HAPPENED ONCE, AND LUCKILY, AFTER WAITING FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES, IT DID START UP AGAIN. I HAVE BEGUN TAKING BACK ROADS ONLY AS IF THIS WOULD HAPPEN ON A HIGHWAY, THE RESULTS WOULD OBVIOUSLY BE DISASTROUS. *TR
ELECTRIC POWER STEERING PUMP WENT OUT WHEN MY DAUGHTER WAS COMING HOME FROM SCHOOL SHE COULD CONTROL CAR ON 2/2/09 WE CALLED GMAC TO SEE IF THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL OF THIS PART THEY SAID IT HAD NOT SO WE CALLED THE CAR LOT FROM WE PURCHASED THE CAR AND HAD TO PAY OUT OF POCKET TO GET THE CAR FIXED. I HATE TO THINK WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF SHE HAD NOT REMAINED CALM WHEN THIS HAPPENED AFTER GETTING CAR FIXED SHE WAS AFRAID TO DRIVE IT FOR A WHILE. I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT NO ONE IN THIS BIG COMPANY HAD NO IDEA THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE POWER STEERING FROM READING THE BLOGS IN 2/09 THERE WERE COMPLAINS THEN THE COMPANY NEED TO REIMBURSE ME FOR THE MONEY FIXED TO TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEM. *TR
THERE WERE NO EVENTS LEADING TO THE FAILURE OF THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM. I WAS DRIVING THE CAR UNDER MY EVERYDAY COMMUTE AND THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM WENT OUT AND THE MESSAGE CENTER FLASHED POWER STEERING. SINCE THE INITIAL FAILURE THERE HAS BEEN NO POWER STEERING IN MY VEHICLE. THE SYSTEM APPEARS TO FUNCTION PROPERLY UNTIL DRIVING BEGINS AND THEN THE STEERING SYSTEM SHUTS DOWN AND LEAVES ME WITH JUST A RACK AND PINION SYSTEM TO OPERATE WITH. *JB
EPS GOES OUT WHILE DRIVING. CHEVY CUSTOMER SERVICE SENT ME TO DEALER TO HAVE A DIAGNOSTIC COMPLETED FOR 85.00 + TAX. DECLINED DIAGNOSTIC AS THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE. ASKED WHY THE MALIBU AND G6 HAD AND EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THE ESP BUT THE SAME WAS NOT EXTENDED FOR THE COBALT AS IT IS THE SAME UNIT. DEALER ADVISED HE COULD NOT ANSWER MY QUESTION. SPOKE WITH CHEVY CUSTOMER SERVICE ABOUT CHARGES AND DEFECTIVE ESP. THEY STATED THEY WOULD SEND THE INFORMATION TO A DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVE WHO WOULD DETERMINE WHAT ACTION TO TAKE AS FAR A REIMBURSEMENT. CHEVY CASE NUMBER 71-702497036. WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF ODI -NHTSA WILL NOT TAKE ACTION, IF THE CONSUMERS NEED TO BRING A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST GM AND THE MANUFACTURER OF THE EPS UNIT BEFORE OF AFTER LIVES ARE LOST? *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH, THE POWER STEERING FAILED. THE CONTACT BELIEVES THAT THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE THE LACK OF POWER STEERING MAKES THE VEHICLE DIFFICULT TO TURN AT HIGH SPEEDS, WHICH COULD POSSIBLY RESULT IN A CRASH. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 67,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT CONTROL PANEL. A TECHNICIAN FROM THE DEALER CONCLUDED THAT THE STEERING COLUMN NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. HE THEN ADDED THAT THE FAILURE WAS COMMON FOR HIS MODEL TYPE. HE PURCHASED THE POWER STEERING COLUMN AND REPLACED THE PART HIMSELF. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 102,633.
POWER STEERING CONTINUOUSLY GOES OUT ON OUR 2005 CHEVY COBALT. IT REQUIRES US TO PULL OVER, TURN THE CAR OFF, WAIT, AND THEN RESTART THE CAR BEFORE IT RESETS ITSELF. WE HAVE NOW COME TO THE POINT WHERE IT GOES OUT AND NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES WE STOP AND RESTART THE CAR IT DOESN'T WORK. WE CAN'T AFFORD THE $1000.00 IT'S GOING TO TAKE TO GET IT FIXED BY THE DEALER SHIP AT THIS TIME. THE COMPANY SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS PROBLEM CONSIDERING ITS A DEFECT IN THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. WE HAVEN'T HAD ANY PROBLEMS FROM THE CAR OTHER THAN THE POWER STEERING. *TR
MY 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT HAS BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH IT'S POWER STEERING. THIS FIRST HAPPENED IN THE BEGINNING OF 2009. I WAS DRIVING MY COBALT DOWN A STEEP HILL GOING APPROXIMATELY 15-20MPH AND OUT OF THE BLUE MY DRIVER MESSAGE CENTER FLASHED THE WORDS 'POWER STEERING', A CHIME SOUNDED AND MY VEHICLE LOST ALL STEERING ABILITY. I WAS BARELY ABLE TO CONTROL MY CAR. I WAS LUCKILY ABLE TO USE MY BRAKES TO STOP THE VEHICLE BUT AGAIN HAD NO ABILITY TO STEER THE VEHICLE AT ALL. ONCE I STOPPED, THE VEHICLE LOST ALL POWER AND SHUT OFF. I STARTED THE VEHICLE UP AGAIN (IT STRUGGLED) AND IT DID THE SAME THING, FLASHED 'POWER STEERING' ON THE MESSAGE CENTER, A CHIME SOUNDED AND I WAS UNABLE TO STEER THE VEHICLE. THIS INCIDENT ALSO HAPPENED AGAIN OVER THE PAST TWO DAYS (MARCH 13, 2010 AND MARCH 14, 2010. THIS TIME I WAS COMING OUT OF MY PARKING SPACE AT MY APARTMENT COMPLEX AND THE CAR AGAIN FLASHED 'POWER STEERING' IN THE MESSAGE CENTER, A CHIME SOUNDED AND I AGAIN LOST ALL ABILITY TO STEER MY VEHICLE AND THE VEHICLE THEN LOST ALL POWER AND SHUT OFF. I STARTED THE VEHICLE BACK UP SEVERAL TIMES AND FINALLY ON THE 4TH OR 5TH TIME, THE POWER STEERING WAS RESTORED BUT THE 'CHECK ENGINE' LIGHT HAS REMAINED LIT EVER SINCE. I AM CURRENTLY NOT DRIVING THE VEHICLE DUE TO THIS ISSUE. I HAVE ALSO RESEARCHED AND FOUND OTHER PEOPLE WITH CHEVY COBALTS TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BY GM IMMEDIATELY. *TR
MORE THAN SIX MONTHS AGO I WAS DRIVING AT APPROX 55MPH WHEN MY CAR STARTED TO "JUMP". REMINDED ME OF SOMEONE LEARNING TO DRIVE A STANDARD. HAD CAR TOWED TO DEALERSHIP, NO CODES, DID TRANS SERVICE, 1 QT LOW (APPROX $500 W/TOW). PROBLEM CONT RANDOMLY, COULD NOT AFFORD TO TAKE TO DEALERSHIP FOR THEM TO PLAY GUESSING GAME. FINALLY TOOK IN BEGIN OF JAN FOR CK ENGINE LIGHT, NO CODE, SENT HOME. FEW DAYS LATER STARTED ACTING UP AGAIN. LET ME ELABORATE...IT WILL "JUMP" WHEN SHIFTING ESPECIALLY INTO 2ND, CK ENGINE LIGHT ON, T/C LIGHT ON, SPEEDOMETER GAGE GOES GOOFY AND "POWER STEERING" APPEARS, OH AND TICKING IN SHIFTER. WE HAVE ALSO HAD ISSUES WITH THE POWER STEERING GOING OUT. ON 1/15 IT STARTED ACTING UP WHILE ON FREEWAY TOOK IT STRAIGHT TO THE DEALER. THEY PULLED CODE P0742 AND DECIDED TO REPLACE TRANSMISSION VALVE BODY (APPROX$2000). PICKED UP CAR ON 1/19, NEXT DAY ENG LIGHT BACK ON. HUSBAND TOOK TO DEALER TOLD IT WOULD GO OFF. CAME BACK ON BEGINNING OF THIS WEEK. LAST NIGHT ON WAY TO SCHOOL & BACK EXPERIENCED WORSE CASE YET. "JUMPING", CK ENGINE, T/C AN AUTO-THEFT LIGHTS ON, TICKING IN SHIFTER ESPECIALLY WHEN BREAKING. WHEN LEAVING SCHOOL POWER STEERING WOULDN'T WORK, TURNED CAR OFF N ON 3 TIMES TO GET IT TO KICK IN. I DO NOT FEEL THAT MY CAR IS SAFE TO DRIVE ANYMORE. AND WITH AS MANY COMPLAINTS AS I HAVE READ TODAY I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY CHEVY/GM HAS NOT FOUND A RESOLUTION FOR THIS YET OR DONE A RECALL. WILL IT TAKE A FATALITY TO GET THEM TO REACT???? WHILE DRIVING MY CAR THE POWER STEERING JUST TURNED OFF MAKING THE CAR EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO DRIVE. WHEN I TURN MY CAR OFF THEN TURN IT BACK ON THE STEERING COMES BACK FOR ABOUT A MIN THEN TURNS OFF AGAIN. I AM TOLD THAT THE WHOLE STEERING COLUMN NEEDS TO BE REPLACED WHICH WILL BE OVER $800. MY CAR IS NOT EVEN 4 YEARS OLD. I'VE ALREADY HAD TO HAVE THE COMPUTER UPDATED TWICE DUE TO SAFETY LIGHTS GOING OFF WITH NO REASON. ALONG WITH REPLACING BOTH CONTROL ARMS AT THE REAR OF THE CAR DUE TO BAD BEARINGS. I ALSO HAD TO REPLACE A MOTOR FOR THE HEATING THAT WAS BROKEN. FOR A CAR THAT ONLY HAS ABOUT 41,000 MILES ON IT THIS SEEMS LIKE TOO MUCH TO GO WRONG WITH A "QUALITY" CAR. *TR
2005 CHEVY COBALT WITH APPROX 45000 MILES. POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT APPEARS AND THEN STEERING WHEEL IS HARD TO MANEUVER. DID GOOGLE SEARCH AND FOUND HUGE NUMBERS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME THING WITH THE SAME MODEL CAR. AFTER WARNING LIGHT APPEARS, IF THE IGNITION IS TURNED OFF AND THEN BACK ON THE LIGHT DISAPPEARS AND THE STEERING IS OK AGAIN FOR A WHILE. TOOK CAR TO CHEVROLET DEALER AND THEY SAID THE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $800+. HOW CAN SUCH A MAJOR PROBLEM OCCUR ON A RELATIVELY NEW CAR AND THERE IS NO RE-CALL? *TR
RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2005 CHEVY COBALT. THREE MONTHS LATER IN JANUARY WHILE DRIVING, THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT. PULLED IN A STORE PARKING LOT, SHOPPED FIFTEEN MINUTES, STARTED THE CAR AND HAD POWER STEERING. THIS HAPPENED AGAIN SEVEN DAYS LATER. I TOOK IT IN TO MY MECHANIC WHO SAID IT WAS AN ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING PUMP AND SHUTTING DOWN WAS A SAFETY FEATURE IF IT OVER HEATS. IT HAPPENED A FEW TIMES DURING THE SUMMER AND AGAIN AROUND DECEMBER. THIS CAN HAPPEN NO MATTER WHAT THE TEMPERATURE. I WENT ONLINE AND FOUND OUT IT COULD COST THOUSANDS TO REPLACE THE WHOLE SYSTEM. *TW

PICKED UP CHILD FROM DAYCARE AND WHILE TURNING TO GET OUT OF FACILITY POWER STEERING INDICATOR SHOWED ON DIGITAL READ-OUT. WHEEL LOCKED AND TO AVOID HITTING ANOTHER PARENT AND CHILD, TURNED WHEEL AS HARD AS POSSIBLE ( VERY DIFFICULT ) TO AVOID COLLISION AND HIT CURB. SLIGHT DAMAGE TO RIM. VEHICLE PURCHASED FROM LICENSED CHEVY DEALER IN MAY OF 07 WITH 50 THOUSAND MILES. *TR
I PURCHASED A 2005 COBALT IN APRIL 2008, STARTED HAVING VIOLENT SHAKING IN FRONT OF CAR WHILE TRYING TO FIND THE PROBLEM MY MECHANIC DISCOVERED A DEFECTIVE STRUT WHICH CHEVY REPLACED EVEN THOUGH WARRANTY HAD JUST RUN OUT. THIS DID NOT CORRECT VIOLENT SHAKING OCCURRING ON A REGULAR BASIS. HAD FRONT END, TIRES, WHEELS, ROTORS, AXLE CHECKED WITH NO OUTCOME OF FINDING THE PROBLEM. WHEN THE SHAKING OCCURS UNABLE TO STEER AND HAVE TO REDUCE SPEED AND PULL TO SHOULDER OF ROAD, AFTER COMPLETE STOP NORMALLY CAN RESUME DRIVING. SINCE MY DAUGHTER DOES NOT DO ANY LONG DISTANCE TRAVEL I HOPED THAT IT WOULD NOT OCCUR AS OFTEN AS IT DOES WHILE I WAS DRIVING IT TO WORK, HOWEVER IN JANUARY OF 2009 WHILE MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING CAR AROUND A CURVE T/C LIGHT CAME ON SHAKING AND INABILITY TO CONTROL THE CAR LEFT HER STRAIGHTENING THE CURVE OUT SPINNING AROUND AND AFTER WEEKS IN A BODY SHOP AND 5000 DOLLARS IN REPAIRS, SEVERAL TRIPS BACK AND MORE MONEY, HIGH INSURANCE RATES WE STILL HAVE A CAR THAT HAS A SERIOUS DEFECT WITH NO ANSWERS TO WHAT CAUSES IT AND WHAT CAN BE DONE TO CORRECT IT. NOW THAT SHE IS VENTURING FURTHER FROM HOME I AM IN FEAR FOR HER LIFE BUT I HAVE NO FUNDS TO REPLACE THIS CAR OR IT WOULD HAVE ALREADY BEEN GONE ALTHOUGH I AM SURE THAT NOBODY ELSE WOULD WANT IT DUE TO THE PUBLICITY THAT THESE CARS HAVE BEEN GETTING. LUCKILY MY DAUGHTER WAS NOT KILLED IN THIS ACCIDENT BUT DOES SOMEONE HAVE TO DIE BEFORE CHEVROLET STEPS UP TO THE PLATE AND FIXES THESE CARS. I HAVE BEEN CONSTANTLY BEEN RESEARCHING TRYING TO FIND THE PROBLEM EVEN THOUGH I CAN FIND OTHER PEOPLE WITH THE PROBLEM NOBODY SEEMS TO HAVE THE SOLUTION. THE CARS OR IN WARRANTY OR JUST OUT OF WARRANTY AND WE COULDN'T GET ANSWERS AND AS THE AUTOS GET OLDER THEY DON'T FEEL IT IS THERE PROBLEM. OUR CAR GETS REGULAR MAINTENANCE WITH THE SAME MECHANIC EACH TIME SO THEREFORE HE HAS FIRSTHAND KNOWLEDGE OF EVERY STEP IT HAS HAD,AND NOW THAT IT HAS HIT THE NEWS I AM SEEING SOME DIRECTION TO TAKE TO GET HELP. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH ON NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS, THE POWER STEERING FAILED WITHOUT WARNING. IMMEDIATELY, THE WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND REMAINED LIT UNTIL THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF. THE DRIVER EXPERIENCED EXTREME DIFFICULTY STEERING THE VEHICLE, WHICH RESULTED IN GREATER EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING AND THEY STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS RELATED TO THE POWER STEERING UNIT. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 49,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 50,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE POWER STEERING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND THE POWER STEERING FAILED. SHE HAD TO PLACE THE VEHICLE INTO PARK OR NEUTRAL AND THEN SHUT OFF THE ENGINE IN ORDER FOR IT TO RESTART. THE POWER STEERING FUNCTIONED SPORADICALLY BEFORE COMPLETELY FAILING AGAIN. THE FAILURE OCCURRED EVERY TIME THE VEHICLE WAS IN USE. THE MANUFACTURER INFORMED THE DEALER OF A TSB FOR THE ISSUE AND STATED THAT THE REPAIR WOULD COST $700. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 39,200 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 37,500.
I HAVE A 2005 CHEVY COBALT AND AT LEAST ONCE A DAY WHILE DRIVING (HIGHWAY OR CITY DRIVING) MY CAR LOSES ITS POWER STEERING. I CAN BE ON THE HIGHWAY OR DRIVING HOME FROM THE STORE. THERE IS NO SPEED LIMIT, NO RHYME OR REASON. THE ONLY WAY I CAN FIX IT IS TO TURN THE CAR ENTIRELY OFF AND RESTART IT. I HAVE ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS HAD SUCH DIFFICULTLY STEERING THAT I BARELY MISSED HITTING OTHER CARS. TURNING CORNERS IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE! *TR
WHILE DRIVING THE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING ASSIST MOTOR FAILED AND LOST ALL POWER STEERING IN THE VEHICLE. CYCLING POWER TO THE MOTOR (KILLING IGNITION AND RESTARTING CAR) BRINGS IT BACK FOR A FEW MOMENTS BEFORE IT FAILS AGAIN. ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN HAD TO BE REPLACED. *TR

I AM EXPERIENCING A RANDOM LOSS OF POWER STEERING IN MY 2005 CHEVY COBALT. IT APPEARS THAT THE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING IN MY VEHICLE WILL RANDOMLY QUITE WORKING. IF I SHUT THE CAR DOWN AND RESTART IT THE POWER STEERING WILL FUNCTION AGAIN FOR A TIME, BUT WILL EVENTUALLY GO OUT AGAIN. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHEN THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO START THE VEHICLE, THE KEY BECAME STUCK INSIDE OF THE IGNITION. THE DEALER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE KEY CYLINDER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THERE WERE NO PRIOR WARNINGS AND THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 47000.
BEGINNING JANUARY 3RD, 2009, THE 'POWER STEERING' WARNING HAS INTERMITTENTLY APPEARED AND POWER STEERING ASSIST WOULD FAIL. THIS OCCURRED ABOUT 3 TIMES, BETWEEN 30 AND ABOUT 50 MILES PER HOUR. THIS IS CLEARLY A SAFETY HAZARD. I ALSO OWN A 2004 MALIBU. MY WIFE IS THE PRIMARY DRIVER. THE SAME ISSUE HAPPENED WITH HER CAR. AFTER FIGHTING WITH GM AND THE DEALER THEY AGREED, AS A ONE TIME EXCEPTION, TO REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMN FOR THE MALIBU AT NO COST. THIS DUE TO MY "CUSTOMER LOYALTY." KNOWING THE TROUBLE INVOLVED AND THE LIKELY OUTCOME, I HAVE NOT YET CONTACTED GM REGARDING THE CURRENT COBALT ISSUES. THE COST OF REPAIR IS SUSPICIOUS, AROUND $2000. THE METHOD OF REPAIR IS ALSO SUSPECT; THE REPLACEMENT OF THE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN. NOT ONLY DOES THIS SEEM TO BE EXCESSIVE, THERE IS LITTLE ASSURANCE THAT THE NEW STEERING COLUMN IS ANY DIFFERENT. IT IS NOT REASONABLE TO EXPECT ANYONE TO FOOT THIS BILL AS A CONSUMER. IT IS EXPENSIVE, AND CLEARLY A PRODUCT DEFECT. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT USING THE CAR, ESPECIALLY ON THE INTERSTATE, THUS RENDERING THIS COSTLY PRODUCT ALL BUT USELESS - AND DANGEROUS. THIS IS NOT THE ONLY ELECTRONIC ISSUE I HAVE HAD WITH THIS CAR. I NEED TO OPEN THE BOTTOM OF THE COLUMN TO REMOVE MY KEY FROM THE IGNITION (ESTIMATED REPAIR COST FROM GOODWRENCH - $450), AND REPEATED BLOWN FUSES WHEN I FIRST BOUGHT THE CAR, ATTRIBUTED TO PINCHED WIRING. A CLUNK IN MY DRIVER SIDE FRONT TIRE, WHEN GOING OVER SMALL BUMPS WHILE TURNING. ALSO LOOSE STEERING, RATTLING SOUND FROM THE STEERING COLUMN. GM REPLACED THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT, IT DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. IM NOW BEING TOLD I NEED TO REPLACE THE WHOLE STEERING COLUMN AT 50,000 MILES! THIS WILL COST ABOUT 2 THOUSAND DOLLARS..... PROBLEM NOT CAUSED BY DRIVER. INSIDE THE STEERING COLUMN THERE IS A "BACKLASH" FORM THE GEARS CAUSING THIS PROBLEM. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE POWER STEERING SHUTS OFF. AS A RESULT, THE VEHICLE BECOMES UNMANAGEABLE TO TURN AND UNCONTROLLABLE. IN ORDER FOR THE VEHICLE TO RESET ITSELF, THE CONTACT MUST SHUT OFF THE VEHICLE AND WAIT A FEW MINUTES FOR IT TO RESTART. OCCASIONALLY, THIS PROCESS MUST BE REPEATED SEVERAL TIMES. HE HAD TO TOW THE VEHICLE TO HIS RESIDENCE AFTER THE MOST RECENT FAILURE. THE CONTACT TOOK HIS VEHICLE TO THE DEALER ON APRIL 13, 2009. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 52,500.

ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING FAILURE IN A 2005 CHEVY COBALT. FIRST STARTED FAILING INTERMITTENTLY AROUND 55K MILES. NOW FAILS WITHIN A FEW SECONDS OF STARTING THE VEHICLE (62K MILES). ELECTRICAL POWER STEERING FAILURE IN MY 2005 CHEVY COBALT. I HAVE MADE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS TO THE MANUFACTURER WITH NO RESPONSE. THE VEHICLE LOST POWER AND BECAME VERY DIFFICULT TO STEER. THE FAILURE HAS OCCURRED MORE THAN SIX TIMES IN ONE MONTH. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY PARKED BECAUSE THE CONTACT FEELS THAT IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. A MECHANIC STATED THAT THERE WAS FAILURE PERTAINING TO THE STEERING WHEEL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 19,698.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ACTIVATED, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY FLIPPED OVER THREE TIMES. THE WEATHER CONDITIONS WERE DRY. DUE TO SHOCK, ALL THE CONTACT COULD REMEMBER WAS CLIMBING OUT OF THE VEHICLE. SHE WAS INFORMED BY WITNESSES AT THE SCENE THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING AT A HIGH SPEED AND FLIPPED OVER WHILE EXITING OFF OF THE FREEWAY. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED A FRACTURED VERTEBRAE, INTERNAL BRUISING, AND A CRACKED TAILBONE. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. A COUPLE OF MONTHS PRIOR TO THE FAILURE, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE POWER STEERING WAS DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER AND THE WARNING INDICATOR WAS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT SERVICED AT THAT TIME. THE CONTACT HAD PREVIOUSLY TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO GET A ROD INSPECTED, WHICH WAS LOCATED BETWEEN THE BRAKE AND THE STEERING. SHE WAS INFORMED THAT IT WAS NOT A SERIOUS ISSUE AT THAT TIME. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 60,000.

I WAS RECENTLY TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME STIFF AND HARD TO MANEUVER. I LOOKED DOWN AT THE WARNING PANEL AND IT HAD LIGHTED UP "POWER STEERING". MY CAR IS A 2005 CHEVY COBALT WITH 45,000 MILES. I READ ON THE INTERNET ABOUT OTHER 2005 COBALT OWNERS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM AROUND 40,000 MILES. I TOOK IT IN TO A CHEVY DEALER TELLING THEM THAT IT APPEARS THAT THIS IS A FLAW WITH THE 2005 COBALT BUT THEY SAID THERE HAS BEEN NO RECALL ON THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING SYSTEM AND THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY SEVERAL HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS TO HAVE THE EPS MODULE REPLACED. I FEEL THAT IT IS UNFAIR TO HAVE SOMETHING SO EXPENSIVE TO GO OUT ON YOUR VEHICLE WHEN IT IS STILL FAIRLY NEW AND HAVE THE SAME THING HAPPEN TO OTHERS BUT YET WE ARE LEFT TO PAY FOR AN APPARENTLY WELL KNOW FLAW IN THE CHEVY COBALT THAT GM DOES NOT WANT TO ADMIT EXITS. *TR
THE INCIDENT DATE BELOW WAS THE FIFTH TIME THIS HAS OCCURRED. FIRST NOTICED TRACTION CONTROL AND POWER STEERING LIGHT COMING ON-THE CAR "BUCKS" AND POWER STEERING IS LOST-SEVERAL TIMES CAR WILL LOSE POWER AND HAVE TO BE RESTART. AFTER RESTART WARNING LIGHTS WILL GO AWAY AND POWER STEERING RETURNS. SEEMS TO COME BACK TO NORMAL AFTER RESTART, RUNS OK UNTIL THE PROCESS STARTS AGAIN. THE CAR WAS PURCHASED MAY 08 AND FIRST INCIDENT WAS AUG 15 2008-TOOK TO DEALER AND THEY RESET THE COMPUTER, SECOND AND THIRD TIME THE CAR SEEMED OK UNTIL THE 4TH INCIDENT AND RETURNED TO DEALER AGAIN AND RESET AGAIN. I WAS TOLD THAT THE COMPUTER CODES WERE SHOWING U2105 AND U2100 U2107 AND CAR RETURNED. THIS LAST INCIDENT (12-11-08) THE CAR WAS DOING THE SAME THING AND DROVE RIGHT TO DEALER TO SHOW SERVICE WHAT THE CAR WAS DOING. THEY CLAIMED THE CAR IS EQUIPPED WITH ELECTRIC STEERING COLUMN AND IT DISENGAGES FROM THE COMPUTER AND THE STEERING COLUMN NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND A COMPUTER MODULE. GAVE THEM PERMISSION TO CORRECT THIS BECAUSE I CAN'T LET MY SON DRIVE A CAR KNOWING AT ANYTIME HE WILL LOSE POWER STEERING. HE HAS BEEN LUCKY HE WAS TRAVELING AT LOW SPEEDS WHEN THIS OCCURS. IF HE WAS ON A HIGHWAY AND IN FRONT OF A TRACTOR TRAILER AND LOST POWER HE MIGHT BE KILLED BECAUSE HE WOULD LOSE PS AND STALL. THIS IS A SAFETY-RELATED DEFECT IN THE VEHICLE EQUIPMENT (ELECTRIC POWER STEERING COLUMN) WHEN AT ANY TIME WITH NO WARNING YOU CAN LOSE YOUR STEERING, STALL AND/OR BUCK. UPON FURTHER RESEARCH INTO THE 2005 COBALT, I HAVE FOUND 805 COMPLAINTS REGARDING THE STEERING COLUMN AND THE PROBLEMS OF CONTROLLING THE CAR WHEN THIS HAPPENS.
