DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WITHOUT WARNING THE ENGINE STALLED WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESTART. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP DETERMINED THERE WAS A SHORT IN THE IGNITION SYSTEM CAUSING THE INJECTION FUSE TO BLOW. THE WIRING WAS REPAIRED. UPDATED 3/20/2006 - *NM
I OWN A 2005 CHEVY COBALT LS AND HAVE HAD NUMEROUS PROBLEMS WITH IT. 1ST I HAD TO TAKE IT IN BECAUSE THE PASSENGER SIDE REAR SUSPENSION WAS MAKING CLUNKING NOISES. 2ND I HAD TO TAKE IT IN BECAUSE THERE WAS MOISTURE BUILDING UP INSIDE THE DRIVERS SIDE HEADLIGHT. 3RD I HAD TO TAKE IT IN BECAUSE THE PASSENGER SIDE REAR WINDOW WAS HOWLING AND YOU COULD HEAR THE OUTSIDE AIR BLOWING THROUGH IT WHEN DRIVING. 4TH PROBLEM I JUST RECENTLY AM HAVING IS THE HEATING SYSTEM. THE BLOWER JUST DOES WHAT IT WANTS. I CAN HAVE THE AIR TO THE OFF POSITION AND IT STILL BLOWS AIR AT A HIGH SPEED. ALSO, WHEN DRIVING THE BLOWER TURNS ITSELF OFF AND ON WHENEVER IT WANTS TO. ALL THIS AND I ONLY HAVE 7,500 MILES ON MY CAR. I WON'T BE BUYING ANOTHER GM VEHICLE! *JB

ON FEB. 10,2006 MY LITTLE BROTHER WAS ON HIS WAY HOME IN MY 2005 COBALT IT WAS RAINING HE WENT AROUND A CURVE AN LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. HE HIT A TOTAL OF 3 TREES THE CAR WAS TOTAL. THE AIR BAGS DIDN'T NOT DEPLOY AN THE SEAT BELT DIDN'T CATCH, BC OF THIS MY LITTLE BROTHER LOST HIS LIFE. HE WAS 5'11 AN WEIGHED ABOUT 350 LBS AN CAME UP OUT OF HIS SEAT AND HIT THE TOP OF THE CAR WERE THE METAL MEETS THE WINDSHIELD. NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. MY FAMILY CALLED CHEVY TO REPORT IT THEY SAID THEY WOULD CALL US BACK IN 24 TO 48 HRS THAT WAS ALMOST 3 WKS AGO AN HAVEN'T HEARD ANYTHING. *NM
THE 2005 CHEVY COBALT WE PURCHASED FOR MY DAUGHTER HAS A VIOLENT VIBRATION THAT IS INTERMITTENT. THE VIBRATION USUALLY HAPPENS ON LONG TRIPS, WHEN THE CAR IS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS OF OVER 65 MPH FOR 45 MINUTES OR LONGER WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ON. THEN WHEN COMING UP ON SLOWER TRAFFIC, YOU TOUCH THE BRAKES TO DISENGAGE THE CRUISE CONTROL, A VIOLENT VIBRATION PROCEEDS. IF YOU APPLY MORE BRAKES THE VIBRATION GETS WORSE. THIS VIBRATION REQUIRES THE DRIVER TO MAINTAIN BOTH HANDS ON THE WHEEL TO CONTROL THE CAR. THIS VIBRATION WILL LAST FROM A FEW MINUTES TO 15 MILES. USUALLY WHEN THE VIBRATION STOPS THE CRUISE CONTROL WILL NOT WORK FOR A MINUTE OF 30 MINUTES AND UP TO 3 DAYS. WE HAVE TAKE THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIPS 5 TIMES. 2 DEALERSHIPS IN OR AROUND TAMPA FLORIDA AND THE DEALER WE PURCHASED IT FROM IN JONESBORO GEORGIA. EACH TIME THEY DIRVE THE CAR A FEW MILES AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS OVER 60 MPH AND DECLARE NOTHING IS WRONG. AS WE STATED ABOVE AND TO THE DEALERSHIPS, IT TAKES A MINIMUM OF 45 MINUTES OR LONGER AT SPEEDS OVER 65 MPH FOR THIS VIBRATION TO HAPPEN, AND SOMETIMES IT WILL NOT HAPPEN. WE HAVE STARTED THE LEMON LAW PROCESS IN GEORGIA AND HAVE ASKED FOR A REPLACEMENT CAR OR PURCHASE BACK BY GM. WE ARE AWAITING THERE ACTIONS. SINCE THE MANUFACTURER'S LAST ATTEMPT TO FIX THE CAR, IN WHICH MY DAUGHTER DROVE 2 HOURS AND THE VIBRATION STARTED AS THEY WERE EXISTING THE EXPRESS WAY TO THE DEALERSHIP, SHE OVER HEARD THE SERVICE MANAGER ACKNOWLEGED "THE PROBLEM IS IN THE BRAKES' THEY CONTACTED THE GM REP IN ATALANTA AREA, AND DECIDED TO DO NOTHING TO FIXE THE CAR. NOW YESTERDAY, WHEN MY DAUGHTER WAS ABOUT TO SLOW DOWN ON THE CONNECTOR IN ATLANTA, DUE TO SLOWER TRAFFIC, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT SOFT AND THEN "HARD AS A BRICK" CAUSING THE CAR NOT TO STOP AND HITTING THE PICKUP TRUCK IN FRONT OF HER. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY AND SHE NOW HAS A "MILD CONCUSION". SHE HAD TO MISS WORK YESTERDAY AND TODAY. WHAT CAN BE DONE TO FORCE GM TO FIX THIS BRAKE PROBLEM OR REPLACE THE CAR?*JB
1) MONTHS PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT AT HIGH WAY SPEED (65 TO 75 MPH) AFTER SEVERAL HOUR (FROM 1 TO 4) WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ENGAGED, WHEN DISENGAGING THE CRUISE CONTROL, THE CAR WOULD VIBRATE VIOLENTLY. GM CLAIMS THEY CAN NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. 2) BRAKES FAILED - APPLIED BRAKES IN TRAFFIC, PEDAL WAS SOFT AND THEN WENT HARD LIKE THE POWER BRAKES WAS NOT WORKING, BUT THE CAR DID NOT SLOW DOWN, CAUSING THE IMPACT IN THE REAR OF A PICK-UP TRUCK. 3) ACCORDING TO THE AIR BAG REPORT THE CAR WAS TRAVELING OVER 30 MPH, BUT THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY ON THE FRONTAL CRASH. *JB
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE TRAVELING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE KEY SEIZED IN THE IGNITION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS FOUND THAT THE IGNITION SWITCH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER 14V047000 (ELECTRICAL). THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED ABOUT THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 10,000.
CLUTCH ON MY 2005 COBALT SS WILL NOT CLAMP DOWN AT HIGH RPMS IN SECOND GEAR. IT FEELS LIKE THE PRESSURE PLATE IS NOT GRABBING HARD ENOUGH. *JB

WINDSHIELD WASHER UNIT DOES NOT WORK WHEN OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE IS BELOW 38 DEGREES. IT APPEARS TO BE A VEHICLE FEATURE AS OPPOSED TO JUST A FROZEN WASHER UNIT AS I HAVE TESTED IT MULTIPLE TIMES. THIS CAUSES MAJOR PROBLEMS WHEN DRIVING IN SNOW OR SALTED ROADS AS VISIBILITY IS ALMOST ZERO. *AK
MY ELDERLY PARENTS PURCHASED THIS CAR NEW FROM A CHEVY DEALERSHIP IN PALM HARBOR, FL. THEY TOOK THE CAR IN NUMEROUS TIME FOR THE CAR SEIZING UP WHILE DRIVING AND POWER STEERING PROBLEMS SHORTLY AFTER THEIR PURCHASE. THE STARTER WOULD TURN OFF, THE POWER STEERING WOULD GO OUT, AND THEY OFTEN COMPLAINED ABOUT THE CAR STOPPING IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING. THERE WERE VERY FEW MILES ON THE CAR WHEN THIS HAPPENED SINCE THEY PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEW IN 2005. THEY TOOK THE CAR IN FOR REPAIR FOR SUCH PROBLEMS BUT WERE TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP THAT NOTHING WRONG. THEY SOLD THE CAR TO ME, THEIR DAUGHTER, BECAUSE THEY HAD GOTTEN TO OLD TO DRIVE AND THEY WERE TOO SCARED TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE. I PURCHASED THE CAR FROM THEM IN APX. 2010 AND IT HAD APX 9000 MILES. SINCE THE PURCHASE OF THE CAR I HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM NUMEROUS TIMES. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR INTO THE CHEVY DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE SEVERAL TIME IN CHAPEL HILL, NC. THEY INSIST THAT THEY COULD NOT GET THE PROBLEM TO REPEAT. WHEN THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT, THE IGNITION SWITCH TURNS OFF THUS TURNING OFF THE CAR, AND THE STALLING WHILE DRIVING IS VERY SCARY TO SAY THE LEAST. THE MOST RECENT RECEIPT FROM CHEVROLET FOR THIS PROBLEM IS FROM 8/14/2013 WITH 42950 MILES ON THE CAR. AGAIN THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT GET THE PROBLEM TO REPEAT. THE MOST RECENT TIME IT HAPPENED WAS ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO. I REPLACED THE ELECTRICAL POWER STEERING FUSE AND IT HAS BEEN NOT INDICATING THAT PROBLEM. THE START STILL TURNS OFF WHILE DRIVING. I THINK CHEVROLET HAS KNOW THIS WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE CHEVY COBALT SINCE 2005 AND DIDN'T WANT TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. $500 TOWARD A NEW CAR..,.CERTAINLY NOT ENOUGH TO WANT TO MAKE ME PURCHASE A CHEVY ANY TIME SOON. IF THEY CAN FIX THE CAR IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. *TR
WE PURCHASED A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT (LS) IN DECEMBER, 2005. STARTING IN JANUARY 2006, WE NOTICED THAT THE ENGINE LIGHT GOES ON AND OFF AND WE HAD THE CHEVY DEALER WHOM WE PURCHASED CAR FROM CHECK IT. THEY TOLD US THAT THE ENGINE IS FINE AND IT HAPPENS TO MANY COBALT THAT THE ENGINE LIGHT WILL GO ON SOMETIMES WITHOUT ANY REASON. WE CALLED CHEVROLET AND WE WERE TOLD THAT THEY WERE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT HAVE NO SOLUTION TO IT. WE WERE ASKED TO KEEP DRIVING THE CAR WITH ENGINE LIGHT ON. WE FEEL VERY UNCOMFORTABLE DRIVING A CAR WITH ENGINE LIGHT ON. WE WOULD NOT KNOW IF THERE IS REALLY NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. CHEVROLET REFUSED TO TAKE ANY ACTION REGARDING TO THIS MATTER. WE DON'T KNOW WHERE TO SEEK FURTHER HELP ON THIS INCIDENT. THERE IS CURRENTLY 6000 MILES ON THE CAR AND THE ENGINE MAY BE FINE AT THIS MOMENT. BUT SINCE THE ENGINE LIGHT IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY, WE WOULD NOT KNOW IF SOMETHING REALLY HAPPENS IN THE FUTURE. WE DON'T FEEL SAFE BUT NOWHERE TO SEEK HELP. *JB
WE BOUGHT THIS CAR IN JULY 2005. SINCE THIS TIME, IT HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP 8 TIMES FOR VARIOUS REASONS. MAINLY THE STEERING. GOING OVER BUMPS, IT RATTLES VERY LOUDLY. THE STEERING COLUMN, STRUTS, MOUNTS, AND ALMOST EVERYTHING TO DO WITH THE STEERING HAS BEEN REPLACED TWICE!! STILL RATTLES LOUDLY. GM TELLS US THAT IS NOT A SAFETY HAZARD. THERE IS A FIX IN PROGRESS BUT MAY TAKE 6 MONTHS TO A YEAR! I PAY A LOT OF MONEY A MONTH FOR A RATTLE TRAP! OTHER ITEMS THAT HAVE BEEN REPLACED ON THE CAR IS THE RADIO, THE BLOWER MOTOR, THE RIGHT HEADLIGHT, ALL 4 DOOR BEZELS, ALL 4 DOOR WEATHER STRIPPING DUE TO WIND NOISE, THE SHIFTING COLUMN BECAUSE I HAD TROUBLE GETTING THE KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION. THIS HAS BEEN THE WORST NEW CAR PURCHASE I HAVE EVER MADE. I HAVE ALREADY BEEN IN TOUCH WITH THE BBB ABOUT IT. *JB
POWERSTEERING CUTS OUT FOR NO REAL GOOD REASON. I BELIEVE IT IS A BAD DESIGN. MOTOR NOT POWERFUL ENOUGH OR CIRCUIT BREAKER VALUE TOO LOW. ITS A !@#$% PROBLEM. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. IT HAPPENS EVERY TIME YOU DRIVE THE CAR. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS ON THE INTERNET WITH THE SO CALLED FIX DONE 3 TIMES WITH THE SAME RESULT. THIS ISN'T ROCKET SCIENCE AND IT TEMPTS YOU TO JUST INCREASE THE AVAILABLE CURRENT. GM DESERVES TO GO OUT OF BUSINESS FOR THEIR CARELESS HANDLING OF IT. THIS CAR IS A CERTIFIED LEMON WITH NUMEROUS PROBLEMS THAT EVERY ONE OFF THE LINE HAS, JUST GOOGLE IT. MY CAR HAS AN EVAP ERROR, BAD UNLOCK BUTTON ON REMOTE, PWS ERROR, CABIN AIR QUALITY SUCKS, LIKE SUCKING ON THE TAIL PIPE IN FRONT OF YOU, TRANSMISSION DOESN'T SHIFT UP PROPERLY, YOU HAVE TO HAVE A FEATHER TOUCH TO GET IT TO SHIFT UP. CLICKING SOUND ON SHIFTER EVERY TIME YOU HIT THE BRAKES, KEY GETS LOCKED IN STEERING , YOU HAVE TO MOVE SHIFTER AND OR HIT BRAKE TO GET IT TO RELEASE IT. THEY NEED TO GET TO THE ROOT OF THE STEERING PROBLEM SO THAT WHEN IT IS FIXED IT STAYS FIXED. INSANITY - USING THE SAME PARTS AND EXPECTING A DIFFERENT OUTCOME. BEING A ELECTRONICS MAJOR I KNOW THIS IS A !@#$% ERROR THAT IS ROOTED IN THE DESIGN. *TW
VEHICLE BEGINS TO VIBRATE VIOLENTLY AT SLOWER SPEEDS AFTER DECELERATION FROM HIGHWAY SPEEDS. CONTROL OF VEHICLE IS LOST DURING MOST VIOLENT VIBRATIONS, AND STOPPING THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY DOES NOT HELP THE SITUATION. THIS VIBRATING (ON THE FRONT WHEELS ONLY) WILL CONTINUE FOR MILES/HOURS. THE ONLY THINGS NOTED ON ANY 2005 CHEVY COBALT WERE SAFETY FOR INTERIOR AND HEADLIGHTS BUT THERE HAVE BEEN OVER 1100 REPORTS OF FAULTY POWER STEERING. SLOWER SPEEDS CAUSE THIS VIOLENT VIBRATION ON THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE. IT HAS STARTED APPROXIMATELY A YEAR AFTER PURCHASE AND HAS CONTINUED AND HAS GOTTEN WORSE SINCE THEN CURRENT DATE 12 FEBRUARY 2010. CONDITION KEEPS WORSENING, HAS ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. *TR
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING THE POWER STEERING FAILED. THE STEERING WHEEL WAS VERY HARD TO TURN. AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED THE POWER STEERING FLUID WAS CHECKED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE A DIAGNOSTICS TEST WAS PERFORMED. THE DEALERSHIP WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. ON DECEMBER 27, 2005 WHILE AT 35 MPH THE POWER STEERING FAILED AGAIN RESULTING IN AN ACCIDENT. THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALED. THE SEAT BELTS WERE WORN, BUT THERE WERE MINOR INJURIES, THE MANUFACTURER HAS BEEN CONTACTED. *AK UPDATED 2/13/2006 - *NM
12/26/05 AT 3:30 P.M. ON INTERSTATE I-495/WILMINGTON, DE BYPASS. ROAD STRAIGHT WITH NO DEBRIS AND DRY. HEADING SOUTHBOUND IN THE FAR LEFT LANE OF A THREE LANE DIVIDED ROAD. GAURDRAILS ON BOTH SIDES. DOING 65 MPH/SPEED LIMIT. CENTER LANE WAS A WALMART SEMI TRACTOR TRAILER DOING 62 MPH. IN FRONT OF MY LANE NEAR THE FRONT OF THE TRUCK WERE TWO CARS ABOUT 5 CAR LENGTHS AHEAD. MY CAR JERKED RADICALLY TO THE RIGHT AND THEN BACK TO THE LEFT TWICE IN RAPID SUCCESSION. THE CAR THEN JERKED VIOLENTLY TO THE RIGHT AND THE LEFT FRONT OF THE CAR IMPACTED THE BACK BUMPER OF THE TRUCK. THE TRUCK DRIVER FELT A BUMP AND STARTED TO BRAKE. MY CAR ROTATED CLOCKWISE UNTIL I WAS GOING DOWN THE ROAD BACKWARDS ABOUT 50-55 MPH IN THE FIRST LANE ALONGSIDE THE STOPPING TRUCK. THE CAR PULLED AGAIN TO THE RIGHT AND THE REAR OF MY CAR IMPACTED THE GUARDRAIL. THE REAR WINDOW EXPLODED AND I FELT COLD AIR. THE CAR ROTATED AGAIN, THIS TIME COUNTER-CLOCKWISE UNTIL I WAS GOING DOWN THE ROAD BACKWARDS AGAIN. SPEED WAS ABOUT 30-35 MPH AT THIS TIME. THE CAR AGAIN PULLED TO THE RIGHT AND THERE WAS NO GUARDRAIL. MY CAR CAME TO A STOP IN THE GREEN STRIP IN THE CENTER OF THE INTERSTATE AT ABOUT A 45 DEGREE ANGLE FACING SOUTHBOUND. THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR WAS DAMAGED AND I HAD TO FORCE IT OPEN TO EXIT THE VEHICLE. IT WAS THEN THAT I DISCOVERED THE LEFT REAR TIRE HAD COME OFF THE VEHICLE AND WAS ABOUT 50 FEET AWAY ON THE INSIDE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. ALL FOUR LUG NUTS WERE STILL ON THE TIRE AND IT WAS STILL INFLATED. THE DELAWARE STATE POLICE RESPONDED AND FILED A REPORT. THE INSURANCE ADJUSTER TOOK PICTURES OF THE CAR AT THE TOWING FACILITY YARD AND THE DAMAGE WAS NOTED. THERE WAS DAMAGE TO THE FRONT SIDE OF THE CAR AND THE REAR. THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE CAR WAS BASICALLY INTACT. LEFT SIDE OF CAR WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED. THE LEFT REAR WHEEL ASSEMBLY WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED INCLUDING THE BRAKE DRUM, SHOCK, SPRING, AXLE, HOUSING AND ALL RODS AND CONNECTIONS. THE CAR WAS A TOTAL LOSS. *NM

THE IGNITION HOLDING THE STARTER KEY IS TOO LOSE. ON THREE OCCASIONS SIMPLY BRUSHING THE KEY CHAIN WITH MY LEG WAS ENOUGH TO TURN THE CAR OFF CAUSING LOSS OF POWER TO THE CAR. THE AUTO DEALER SAID THAT THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO TO DECREASE THIS DANGER. *JB
I PURCHASED A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT IN AUGUST OF 2005. IN DECEMBER OF 05 THE CAR WAS HAVING A PROBLEM RELATED TO THE AUTOMATIC SHIFTER AND WAS IN FOR SERVICE. THE SHIFTING UNIT WAS REPLACED, ALSO THE RADIO WAS REPROGRAMMED FOR FLASHING AN ERROR MESSAGE AT THE TIME OF SERVICE. BY FEBRUARY OF 06 THE SHIFTER WAS AGAIN VERY STIFF TO MOVE AND WAS HAVING TROUBLE GETTING THE KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION. THE GARAGE ADJUSTED THE SHIFTER LINKAGE AND LUBED THE CABLE ASSEMBLY, AT THIS TIME I ALSO HAD A CONCERN WITH THE OPERATION OF THE HEADLIGHTS, CHANGING THEM FROM LOW BEAM TO HIGH BEAM. THE PROBLEM BEING THAT WHEN YOU SWITCH THE LIGHTS THEY GO OUT FOR A BRIEF TIME. THE GARAGE ORDERED A NEW MULTI-CONTROL SWITCH FOR THE CAR. A FEW DAYS AFTER HAVING THE CAR SERVICED FOR THESE PROBLEMS THE CAR WAS TOWED BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE I WAS UNABLE TO REMOVE THE KEY AGAIN FROM THE SWITCH CAUSING THE BATTERY TO GO DEAD, AND THE SHIFTER WAS VERY STIFF. THE GARAGE ORDERED AND REPLACED THE SHIFTER ASSEMBLY AND DEFECTIVE CYLINDER FOR THE KEY SWITCH. AS OF THE 7TH OF MARCH, 06, I WAS STILL HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE LIGHTS GOING OUT WHEN CHANGING FROM LOW TO HIGH BEAMS, THE CAR IS PRESENTLY IN THE SHOP. I HAVE CONTACTED GM ABOUT MY CONCERNS WITH THE SHIFTER AND THE LIGHTS. I RENTED THIS BRAND NEW COBALT 4 MONTHS AFTER HURRICANE KATRINA FROM MOBILE ALABAMA, SO AS TO GO BACK TO MY HOME TOWN OF SAN FRANCISCO, CA. BY THE TIME I MADE IT THROUGH LOS ANGELES, AT AROUND 430 AM. I LOST CONTROL OF CAR DUE TO SEVERE STIFFNESS IN THE STEERING. WHICH LED TO THE VEHICLE RUNNING OFF OF I-5 HEADING NORTH BOUND AT A SPEED OF 60 MILES PER HOUR. VISIBILITY WAS GOOD, I VEERED OFF THE FREEWAY INTO THE MEDIAN PORTION OF I-5, AND I TRIED TO SLOW DOWN BUT NO RESPONSE WHICH LED ME TO ROLL OVER FEW TIMES, END TO END AND OVER AND OVER, LUCKILY I WAS WEARING MY SEAT BELT AND IT HELD VERY WELL, SUPRISINGLY, NO AIRBAGS, NONE OF THEM DEPLOYED, AND ALL THE WINDOWS BLEW OUT, AND NOT THE REINFORCED KIND INCLUDING THE FRONT WIND SHIELD. THE AMBULANCE CAME, AND SO DID THE CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL. THERE IS A REPORT ABOUT IT WHICH INDICATES THAT NO AIRBAGS WERE DEPLOYED, AND I DO HAVE PICTURES OF CAR AFTER INCIDENT. I HAD FEW BUMPS AND BRUISES AND HAD FEW CUTS FROM THE GLASS ON MY ARMS AND LEGS, AND I HAD TO ACQUIRE A FEW ROUNDS OF PHYSICAL THERAPY AND ACCUPUNCTURE.BUT LUCKILY I WAS IN GOOD SPIRITS.THE CAR WAS COVERED UNDER 3 INSURANCES, WHICH PAID FOR SOME DAMAGE, INCLUDING MY DISCOVER CARD, AND MY GRANDMA'S AARP. POWER STEERING FAILURE AT RANDOM. I BOUGHT A 2005 CHEVY COBALT BRAND NEW IN 2005. AFTER DRIVING 40,000 MILES I WOULD GET A POWER STEERING FAILURE. WHEN I FIRST TURN THE CAR ON I HAVE POWER STEERING, BUT AFTER A RANDOM MOMENT OF TIME IT CUTS OUT AND THE LIGHT ON THE DASH COMES ON. IT WILL GO OUT IN MID TURN OR WHILE GOING STRAIGHT & BOTH FORWARD AND IN REVERSE. MOST REPORTS I CAN FIND ABOUT THE PROBLEM SAY IT WILL COST ABOUT $2000 TO FIX AND THE PROBLEM RECURS. THE ONLY WAY TO GET A PART TO FIX IT IS TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND SOME DEALERSHIPS ARE SAYING ITS THE STEERING COLUMN WHILE OTHERS SAY ITS A MOTOR. I THINK ITS A SCAM FROM GM TO MAKE A PART THAT GOES OUT AND CHARGE AN ARM AND A LEG TO FIX. THE FAILURE HAPPENS DAILY NOW. ITS DIFFICULT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. IT IS UNSAFE TO TURN INTO BUSY TRAFFIC IN THE CITY AND DRIVING AROUND MOUNTAINS. IT WAS THE CHEAPEST NEW CAR I COULD FIND AT THE TIME BECAUSE I'M POOR, SO FORKING OVER $2000.00 FOR A PART THAT WILL GO OUT AGAIN IN ANOTHER 40,000 MILES IS NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN. EVEN THOUGH THERE IS A LIGHT ON THE DASH TO INDICATE A POWER STEERING FAILURE, IT DOES NOT SHOW UP ON DIAGNOSTICS. IT IS AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE AND NOT MECHANICAL, SO ITS NOT UNDER WARRANTY. I OWN A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. AS I WAS DRIVING THE CAR I WENT TO MAKE A TURN ONTO A STREET AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR SHUTS OFF AND JUST COMES TO A COMPLETE STOP. THREE MONTHS AFTER REPLACEING THE RADIATOR IN MY CAR FROM HITTING A RACCOON. I STARTED THE CAR AND SMOKE CAME FROM THE EXAUST. TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP ON FRIDAY. ON THE FOLLOWING MONDAY I GOT A CALL SAYING "WE CAN NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG" AND DROVE THE CAR HOME. THE NEXT MORNING I STARTED THE CAR AND SMOKE CAME FRON THE EXAUST AGAIN, THE SAME THING HAPPEND AFTER WORK EXCEPT THE CAR STARTED AFTER TURNING THE KEY A FEW TIMES. THE SAME THING HAPPEND THE NEXT TWO DAYS IT DIDN'T WANT TO START AND AFTER IT DID, IT SMOKED FOR APPROXIMATLY 10 MINUTES. THAT FRIDAY MORNING WAS NO DIFFERENT AND THE SAME WITH LEAVING FROM WORK UNTILL I GOT 12 MILES FROM AWAY WHEN THE TEMPERATURE GAGE CAME ON, SO I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. THERE I TALKED TO A DIFFERENT MECHANIC AND TOLD HIM WHAT WAS GOING ON AND IN LESS THEN A MINUTE HE TOLD ME WHAT IT WAS PROBABLY A CRACKED HEAD ON THE ENGINE. THE FOLLOWING MONDAY AND FURTHER INSPECTION HE WAS RIGHT IN SAYING IT WAS THE HEAD AND NEEDS TO BE SENT OUT FOR REPAIR. NOW THEY ARE NOT WILLING TO FIX THIS PROBLEM SAYING THAT IT IS NON WARRANTY AND WE ARE STUCK WITH ALL COSTS.

VEHICLE RESTARTED WITH NO PROBLEM. APPROXIMATELY 60 MILES FURTHER THE SAME THING HAPPENED BUT I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE ENGINE WHILE MOVING AND CONTINUE WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. TECHNICIAN AT CHEVROLET DEALER IN SANTA FE, NM TOLD ME THE PROBLEM WAS TOO WEIGHTY A KEY CHAIN - HE ALSO GAVE ME A PRINTOUT INDICATING THE PROBLEM, WHICH I STILL HAVE. I LIGHTENED THE KEY CHAIN AND NEVER HAD THE PROBLEM AGAIN.. VERY SCARY TO HAVE YOUR CAR KONK OUT AT 70 MGH WITH 3 LANES OF TRAFFIC ON YOUR TAIL. *TR

APPROXIMATELY 18 HOURS LATER AFTER STARTING THE ENGINE ATTEMPTED TO PULL OUT OF THE CAR PORT AND THE CAR FELT STUCK, I GOT OUT TO MAKE SURE NOTHING WAS BLOCKING THE WHEELS; TRIED DRIVING THE CAR AGAIN WITH GREATER ACCELERATION--WAS ABLE TO MOVE CAR BUT THE RIGHT REAR WHEEL WAS LOCKED AND MADE SKID MARKS AND SOUNDS FOR ABOUT 15 FEET, THE WHEEL WOULD NOT UNLOCK, TRIED PUTTING THE CAR IN REVERSE, THE WHEEL REMAINED LOCKED, THEN TRIED ACCELERATED AND BRAKING HARD, THE WHEEL WOULD NOT UNLOCK. CALLED CHEVROLET ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE THEY SENT A FLATBED TRUCK TO TAKE TO DEALER, THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, AT MY HOME AND AT THE DEALER; LEFT COBALT IN THE SERVICE DRIVE OVERNIGHT; NEXT DAY WHEN SERVICE DROVE THE VEHICLE INTO SERVICE IT OPERATED NORMALLY. I AM THE OWNER OF A 2005 CHEVY COBALT SS/SC. I HAVE 5000 MILES ON THE CAR AND THE SHIFT LINKAGE HAS FAILED. THE PROBLEM LIES IN FACT THAT CHEVY/GM DOES NOT OFFER A REPLACEMENT PART FOR THIS. MY HEADLIGHT INDICATOR COMES ON REPEATEDLY, MY TEMPERATURE CONTROLS DO NOT ALWAYS WORK, MY EMERGENCY BRAKE LIGHT COMES WHEN THE BRAKE IS NOT ON, MOST RECENTLY MY GAUGES HAVE BEEN QUITTING AS I AM DRIVING AND MY LEFT BLINKER HAS STOPPED WORKING. I BROUGHT THE CAR BACK AGAIN SAID A/C IS NOT FINE I ASKED THEM IF IT COULD BE SOME SORT OF FILTER (I AM NO MECHANIC) BUT IT WAS. THEY HAD CAR ALL DAY, WENT TO PICK IT UP BUT THEY SAID DASH WAS APART BECAUSE THEY WERE FIXING THE PROBLEM WITH THE FLUID COMING OUT OF THE DASH (AND I SAID I WAS TOLD THERE WAS NO PROBLEM) THEY HAD THE CAR FOR THE WEEKEND. THEY TRIED TO CHARGE ME FOR THE FILTER AND I SAID I WOULD NOT PAY FOR IT BECAUSE THERE WAS PROBLEMS WITH THAT AC AND DEFROSTER ETC SINCE DAY ONE. THEY TOOK OUT THE FILTER AND PUT IN AN OLD DIRTY FILTER THAT DID NOT COME FROM MY VEHICLE AS THE GUY FROM THE CHEVY DEALERSHIP IN MALDEN SAID HE FOUND IT IN THE TRASH, (HAS MADE MY DAUGHTER SICK). #5 WHILE DRIVING THE CAR I WAS GETTING OFF OF THE HIGHWAY INTO A REST AREA AND THE CAR JUST DIED, THERE WAS NO POWER STEERING NO BRAKES ETC. THE KEY WAS IN THE SWITCH AND IT WAS NOT OFF. I STARTED THE CAR UP AGAIN. #6 THE ELECTRICAL DIDNT WORK, THEY FIXED THAT. I HAVE CONTACTED CHEVY CUSTOMER SERVICE ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS AND THEY SAY THEY WILL CHECK INTO IT ETC AND CALL ME BACK, BUT THEY NEVER DO. I WANT THEM TO FIX THE STEERING WHEEL, FIX THE CAR STALLING OUT FOR NO REASON (WE COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED) AND PUT IN A NEW FILTER NOT SOMEONE ELSES DIRTY FILTER. I DON'T TRUST THE MALDEN DEALERSHIP. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE BODY CONTROL MODULE, DOOR LOCKS, FUSES, ELECTRONIC DOOR LOCK MECHANISM, AND THE POWER STEERING ASSIST MOTOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5,000.

I HAVE TAKEN IT TO NUMEROUS MECHANICS AND BACK TO THE DEALER WHILE IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. IT HAS A 175000 MILES ON IT NOW. THE FIRST TIME I DID TAKE IT BACK THEY REPLACED A WIRING HARNESS. AT APPROXIMATELY 3000 MILES (APPROX IN AUGUST 2005) I HAD MY FIRST OIL CHANGE AND THIS IS WHEN MY POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON FOR THE FIRST TIME. IT HAS BEEN COMING ON EVERY SINCE. WHEN THE POWER STEERING LIGHT COMES ON: *THE CAR JERKS SLIGHTLY AT CRUISING HIGHWAY SPEED AND* WHEN I AM AT SPEEDS LESS THAN 20 MPH IT JERKS VIOLENTLY AND * IT GOES DEAD WHEN IT STOPS AND *THE GAUGES ON THE DASH (ODOMETER, SPEEDOMETER, AND GAS) FLUCTUATE WILDLY, AND VERY FREQUENTLY AND FOR SUSTAINED PERIODS OF TIME (DAYS) I HAVE NO POWER STEERING AND THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT ABRUPTLY, SEVERAL TIMES THIS HAS HAPPENED WHILE I AM TURNING AT A BUSY INTERSECTION. SOMETIMES THE POWER STEERING WILL COME BACK AFTER TURNING THE CAR OFF ABOUT (1 OUT OF 5 TIMES) THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TURNS ON AND OFF AND THE LIGHT WITH A LOCK ON IT TURNS ON AND OFF. IT HAS BEEN CHECKED AT SELLERS CHEVROLET IN PURVIS NUMEROUS TIMES FOR THIS. I HAVE HAD REGULAR MAINTENANCE AND SERVICE CHECKS. I HAVE HAD THE TRANSMISSION FLUID CHANGED TWICE. THEY HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIX IT THE POWER STEERING PROBLEM. IT KEEPS RECURRING. I HAVE NOT BEEN IN ANY ACCIDENTS. I HAVE HAD SEVERAL NEAR MISSES THOUGH. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR EXPOSING THIS PROBLEM AND IF YOU WANT TO COME GET MY CAR AND TEST IT YOU ARE MORE THAN WELCOME TO HAVE IT AND MAKE IT YOUR POSTER BOY/CAR FOR LEMONS. I NEED A NEW VEHICLE SINCE I HAVE 4 FOSTER CHILDREN NOW. ALL MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY HAVE URGED ME TO SELL THIS CAR FOR THE ENTIRE TIME I HAVE HAD IT BECAUSE OF ITS RECURRING PROBLEMS. DT: 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONSUMER STATED WHILE SLIDING THROUGH A RED LIGHT ANOTHER VEHICLE HIT CONSUMER'S ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE REAR. THE VEHICLE THEN HIT A POLE, SPUN AROUND, AND HIT ANOTHER POLE. THE VEHICLE ALMOST FLIPPED OVER. IT WENT UP ON TWO WHEELS AND CAME BACK DOWN. THERE WAS FRONT AND REAR END DAMAGE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALED. UPON IMPACT, THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY, AND THE PASSENGER'S SEAT BELT CAME OFF. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN INSPECTED YET TO DETERMINE WHY THIS HAPPENED ON AUGUST 27, 2005. A POLICE REPORT WAS TAKEN. THE PASSEWNGER SUSTAINED INJURIES, HIT CHEST AND ARM ON THE DASH,BOARD AND SHE WAS BRUISED. *AK
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE FIRST TIME OCCURRED WHILE PULLING IN TO A TOLL BOOTH. AFTER COMPLETELY SHUTTING OFF THE VEHICLE, IT RESTARTED 5-10 MINUTES LATER. THE SECOND TIME THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. AFTER INSPECTING THE VEHICLE THE DEALER REPLACED THE PCM IN THE TRANSMISSION. THE FAILURE DID NOT REOCCUR AFTER THE PCM WAS REPLACED.
DT: THE CONSUMER STATES THAT THE 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT WAS HAVING TWO PROBLEM. THE ABS MALFUNCTIONED THE ABS LOCKED THE TIRES. THE MAIN ISSUES WITH THE CAR WAS THE STEERING COLUMN. THE TILTING OF THE STEERING WHEEL WAS MAKING THE VEHICLE STALL. THE STEERING WHEEL WAS BROUGHT DOWN TO THE BOTTOM WITH FORCE AND THE VEHICLES STALLED. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR AROUND A MONTH. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN IN THE DEALERSHIP FOR THIS PROBLEM. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT BEEN CONTACTED. DT: THE CONSUMER STATED THAT HE HEARD A SNAPPING NOISE IN STEERING COLUMN AND COULD FEEL IT IN THE STEERING WHEEL. THIS HAPPENED ALL OF THE TIME AND WOULD OCCUR WITH NO WARNING. THE STEERING COLUMN SHAFT WAS REPLACED. THE IGNITION SWITCH WAS REPLACED BECAUSE OF THE FLASHING THAT HELD THE TUMBLER AND THE S HAD COLLAPSED. THE MANUFACTURER TOLD THE DEALER NOT TO REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMN SHAFT BUT THE DEALER MADE THE REPAIRS BECAUSE THEY HAD ALREADY ORDERED THE PART. *AK (12/01/05) AFTER THE COLUMN WAS REPLACED, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER TWICE. THE WHEEL COVER DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH RINGS TO HOLD THE RIMS TIGHT AND WOULD RATTLE WHEN GOING OVER LIGHT BUMPS, THE VEHICLE PULLED TO THE RIGHT AND THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT PILLAR WAS LOOSE. *SC
I BOUGHT MY CAR IN 6/05. MY CAR'S PARKING LIGHTS, TAIL LIGHTS, AND DASH LAMPS WERE NOT WORKING. I BROUGHT IT IN TWICE BEFORE IT WAS FIXED, ABOUT 7/05. THEN EVERYTHING WORKED PROPERLY FOR ABOUT A MONTH. WHENEVER I TURNED THE HEADLIGHTS ON MANUALLY, THE DASH PANEL WOULD ILLUMINATE. HOWEVER, ONE DAY IT BEGAN TO FLICKER AND NOW THE INSTRUMENT PANEL ONLY ILLUMINATES WHEN THE AUTO LIGHT SENSOR DEEMS IT DARK ENOUGH TO WARRANT ILLUMINATION. I HAVE DRIVEN IN THE RAIN AND TODAY IN A SNOW STORM AND WHEN I MANUALLY TURNED MY HEADLIGHTS ON MY INSTRUMENT PANEL REMAINED DARK. OR, AT TIMES, IT WILL ILLUMINATE FOR A FEW MINUTES, GO DARK AGAIN, ILLUMINATE, DARK, AND SO ON. I BROUGHT IT BACK TO THE DEALER AGAIN AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THE AUTO LIGHT SENSOR IS SUPPOSED TO OVERRIDE ME MANUALLY TURNING MY HEADLIGHTS ON, HOWEVER, THIS WAS NOT THE CASE WHEN MY CAR WAS WORKING PROPERLY BETWEEN 7/05 AND 8/05. DURING THAT MONTH MY DASH LIGHTS WOULD ILLUMINATE WHENEVER I TURNED MY HEADLIGHTS ON, EVEN DURING BROAD DAYLIGHT. ALSO, MY EMERGENCY BRAKE LIGHT FLASHES ON AND OFF ON THE DASH MAYBE ABOUT ONCE A WEEK AS DOES MY 'BRIGHT' HEADLIGHT BEAM ICON ON THE DASH. *JB

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN THIS FAILURE HAPPENS THE SERVICE ENGINE AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT ILLUMINATE. THE RPM GAUGE WILL START TO FLIP UP AND DOWN. THE FAILURE STARTED TO OCCUR 6 MONTHS AGO. EVERYTIME THE FAILURE OCCURS THE CONTACT HAS TO PULL OFF THE ROAD AND RESTART THE VEHICLE IN ORDER FOR THE POWER STEERING TO OPERATE. THE VEHICLE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 48000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE 65000. THE VIN NUMBER WAS UNAVAILABLE.
WHILE DRIVING MY 2005 COBALT IT STALLS OUT WITH NO WARNING. THE RADIO FLASHES LOCKED ACROSS THE SCREEN, JUST AS THE CAR IS ABOUT TO SHUT OFF. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP ON THREE DIFFERENT OCCASIONS, AND THEY KEEP TELLING ME THEY CAN'T FIND THE PROBLEM. THIS HAS HAPPENED PROBABLY 15 TIMES OR MORE SINCE I LEASED THE CAR BACK IN JULY. I'M REALLY AFRAID THAT THIS MIGHT CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. THE CONTACT BELIEVED THAT THE VEHICLE EXHIBITED AN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION FAILURE WHICH CAUSED THE DRIVER TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE CONTACT ALSO INDICATED THAT THE AIRBAGS DID DEPLOY UPON IMPACT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE INCIDENT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 1,800. DT: CONSUMER HAS A 2005 CHEVROLET COBALT. SHE WAS ON VACATION WHEN SOMETHING STRUCK HER GAS TANK. SHE WANTED TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE PROTECTIVENESS OF GAS TANK. THERE WAS A PIECE OF ALUMINUM THAT PROTECTED THE GAS TANK AND WHEN SOMETHING STRUCK THE VEHICLE. THE ALUMINUM WAS ALMOST COMPLETELY PEALED BACK. THIS HAPPENED ON AUGUST 8, 2005 IN BAKER COUNTY FLORIDA ON 110 WEST. SHE HAS PICTURES OF THE DAMAGE.*AK
I BOUGHT A 2005 CHEVY COBALT LS AS NEW IN 2005. THE CAR HAS 55,000 MILES ON IT AND HAS BEEN WELL TAKEN CARE OF. I AM A HYPERMILER AND DO WHAT I CAN TO BABY THE CAR DOWN THE ROAD. AROUND A WEEK AGO, I WAS DRIVING THE CAR AND OUT OF NOWHERE THE POWER STEERING GOES AWAY AND A MESSAGE IS DISPLAYED ON THE LED DISPLAY NEAR THE TACHOMETER, IT READS "POWER STEERING". I STOP SOMEWHERE AND TURN OFF THE CAR AND THEN BACK ON, THE POWER STEERING IMMEDIATELY WORKS OKAY AGAIN. EACH TIME I DRIVE THE CAR, THIS HAPPENS AT SOME RANDOM POINT. IT IS ALWAYS FIXABLE BY TURNING OFF THE IGNITION AND RE-STARTING THE CAR. I DID RESEARCH ONLINE AND DISCOVERED THERE ARE A TON OF PEOPLE REPORTING THIS EXACT SAME PROBLEM WITH ATLEAST THE 2005 AND 2006 MODELS, AND MAYBE MORE. I FEEL THAT THIS IS A POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING PROBLEM AS A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER STEERING CAN BE THE CAUSE OF A SERIOUS OR FATAL ACCIDENT. FROM WHAT I CAN SEE, GENERAL MOTORS HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL. I FIND THIS ALARMING CONSIDERING THIS IS A KNOWN MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT AND IS A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM. *TR
