TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH, THE POWER STEERING FAILED ON HER VEHICLE ON A FREQUENT BASIS. THE POWER STEERING LIGHT WOULD ILLUMINATE ON THE DASHBOARD AND THEN SHE NOTED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD BE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO TURN. SHE PULLED OVER AND TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF AND RE-STARTED IT; HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE WOULD FUNCTION CORRECTLY FOR A WHILE AND THEN FAIL AGAIN. SHE CALLED THE DEALER AND WAS INFORMED THAT SHE WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TEST. SHE HAD NOT SPOKEN WITH THE MANUFACTURER. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 58,460. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 58,200.

THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH IN RAINY WEATHER CONDITIONS WHEN THE "POWER STEERING" WARNING LIGHT INDICATOR ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND IMMEDIATELY, THERE WAS A LOSS OF POWER STEERING. THE DRIVER PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHICH REQUIRED GREATER EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO RESUME NORMAL OPERATIONS. THE FAILURE OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED FOR THE MALFUNCTION AT THIS TIME. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 33,000. UPADTED 02/18/10

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT CONTROL PANEL, AND THEN THERE WAS A LOSS OF POWER STEERING. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALERSHIP. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 85000.
AS OF LAST WEEK, I HAVE HAD STEERING PROBLEMS WITH MY 2006 CHEVY COBALT. I WILL BE DRIVING AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN MY POWER STEERING GOES OUT AND I AM NOT ABLE TO STEER SAFELY. IF I SHUT MY CAR OFF AND TURN IT BACK ON, THE STEERING WORKS FINE BUT ONLY FOR A SHORT TIME. THE FIRST DAY I WOULD BE ABLE TO DRIVE AGAIN FOR A LITTLE WHILE BEFORE THE STEERING WENT OUT AGAIN, BUT NOW IT IS ALMOST IMMEDIATELY - ONE WEEK LATER. CURRENTLY, THERE IS NOT A RECALL ON THE STEERING PROBLEMS FOR THIS ELECTRIC STEERING SYSTEM, BUT I HAVE SEEN AND HEARD A LOT OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS. I HAVE ONLY HAD MY CAR FOR TWO YEARS, AND ALREADY HAD TO REPLACE THE FUEL SYSTEM DUE TO A CRACK AND LEAK. I AM NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO REPLACING MY STEERING SYSTEM AS WELL! *TR
2006 CHEVY COBALT HAVING PROBLEMS WITH POWER STEERING & TC (TRACTION CONTROL) CAR JERKS AND LOCKS UP WHILE DRIVING. BROUGHT VEHICLE BACK TO DEALERSHIP TWICE (AUGUST 2009) AND THEY REPLACED SOMETHING EACH TIME THAT WAS SUPPOSEDLY UNDER RECALL. THIRD TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED (DECEMBER 2009) AND DEALERSHIP CANNOT FIND OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM? I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE MY VEHICLE! *TR
2006 CHEVY COBALT LOSES POWER STEERING WHILE DRIVING. I HAD JUST GOTTEN OFF THE HIGHWAY AND MY CAR LOST ALL POWER STEERING. TOOK IT TO A SHOP THE NEXT DAY AND THEY SAID THERE WAS A BULLETIN OUT THAT THESE ELECTRIC MOTORS CAN OVERHEAT IF YOU CAR SITS IDLE FOR TOO LONG OR YOU ARE STOPPED AND THE WHEEL IS TURNED A CERTAIN WAY. IT WAS A VERY SNOWY DAY AND THE ROADS WERE VERY ICY. THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN NO WAY FOR ME TO SWERVE QUICKLY OUT OF SOMEONE'S PATH IF THEY CUT IN FRONT OF ME OR GOD FORBID A DEER WOULD HAVE JUMPED IN FRONT OF ME. I HAVE A 6 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER AND THANK GOD SHE WASN'T IN THE CAR. I WOULD HATE TO GET IN A SEVERE CAR ACCIDENT BECAUSE THERE IS A DEFECT WITH A CHEVY PART. THIS SHOULD DEFINITELY BE RECALLED AND FIXED IMMEDIATELY. I IMAGINE THERE ARE SEVERAL PARENTS THAT HAVE THIS CAR AND HOW UNFAIR IS THAT? I WAS TOLD TO JUST SHUT MY CAR OFF AND LET IT COOL DOWN. DRIVING DOWN THE FREEWAY, THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT OF MY 2006 CHEVY COBALT. I HAVE TO REPLACE THE POWER STEERING MOTOR. MILEAGE IS 19,640. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT LT. HE STATED THAT WHILE ENTERING THE HIGHWAY, THE POWER STEERING LIGHT WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT CONTROL PANEL. THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME DIFFICULT TO MOVE TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER HE WAS ABLE TO DRIVE ONTO THE EMERGENCY LANE AND RESTART THE VEHICLE, THE POWER STEERING WOULD THEN BECOME OPERABLE. THE FAILURE OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE DEALER ADVISED THAT THERE WERE NO RELATED RECALLS AND SINCE HIS THE WARRANTY WAS NOT VALID THE CONTACT IS LIABLE FOR THE ESTIMATED REPAIR COST OF OVER $900. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE TO THE VEHICLE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE UNDER 67,770.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH THE POWER STEERING LIGHT ILLUMINATED WHEN THE POWER STEERING FAILED; HOWEVER, SHE WAS ABLE TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE ENOUGH TO DRIVE ONTO THE EMERGENCY LANE. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE OR DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE DEALERS DIAGNOSIS FOUND THAT THE POWER STEERING MOTOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND IF IT RECURRED, THE STEERING COLUMN WOULD ALSO NEED TO BE REPLACED. I CAN'T REMOVE THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION. SOME OF INTERIOR ELECTRICAL REMAIN ON WHICH DRAINS THE BATTERY. *TR

THE "POWER STEERING" WARNING LIGHT INDICATOR ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND IMMEDIATELY, THERE WAS A LOSS OF POWER STEERING. THE FAILURE OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHICH RECOMMENDED THAT THE VEHICLE BE INSPECTED BY AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHICH QUOTED A DIAGNOSTIC CHARGE OF $100.00 THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED FOR THE MALFUNCTION. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.
WE OWN A 2006 CHEVY COBALT. IN DEC. 2009 THE STEERING WARNING ON THE DASH CAME ON, BUT WENT OFF THE NEXT TIME MY 19 YR OLD DAUGHTER STARTED THE CAR. A WEEK LATER THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT COMPLETELY WHEN THE CAR WAS TURNED ON. WE HAD TO REPLACE THE MODULE IMMEDIATELY AT A COST OF ALMOST $900. I HAVE THE WORK TICKET TO SHOW WHAT WAS DONE TO REPAIR THE CAR. I NOW UNDERSTAND THAT THIS PROBLEM IS BEING REPORTED BY OTHER COBALT OWNERS. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH ON NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS. SUDDENLY, THE ENGINE AND TRACTION CONTROL WARNING LIGHT INDICATORS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE WARNING INDICATORS REMAINED ILLUMINATED UNTIL THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 56,000.
WE GOT INTO OUR 2006 CHEVY COBALT AND BEGAN DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND GOT ABOUT 2 MILES WHEN THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT AND THE WARNING LIGHT "POWER STEERING" COMES ON. THE VEHICLE BECOMES NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE TO STEER AT THAT POINT. I PULLED OFF THE ROAD, TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF AND CHECKED UNDER THE HOOD AND THE BELTS ARE ALL FINE AND FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. I THEN GOT BACK INTO THE CAR AND STARTED THE VEHICLE UP AND TO MY SURPRISE THE STEERING WAS FUNCTIONING AGAIN. ABOUT 2 MILES DOWN THE ROAD HERE WE GO AGAIN I LOST THE STEERING. I DROVE HOME, CHECKED AND REPLACED THE FUSES BOTH INSIDE THE VEHICLE AND UNDER THE HOOD FOR THE POWER STEERING EVEN THOUGH THEY LOOKED FINE. THEN I TOOK IT OUT AND SURE ENOUGH FINE WHEN STARTED BUT OUT AGAIN ABOUT TWO MILE DOWN THE ROAD. FROM WHAT I AM SEEING HERE AS FAR AS COMPLAINTS GO IT DOESN'T APPEAR TO BE A CHEAP FIX AND IF SO MANY COMPLAINTS ARE BEING FILED THAT THIS NEEDS SOME VERY SERIOUS ATTENTION BEFORE SOME POOR SOUL ENDS UP IN A VERY SERIOUS OR FATAL ACCIDENT. IT WOULD BE UNDERSTANDABLE IF THERE WERE ONLY A FEW COMPLAINTS BUT THERE ARE A LOT OF THEM. NOT EVERYONE EVEN KNOWS ABOUT THIS WEBSITE SO HOW MANY COMPLAINTS COULD BE OUT THERE THAT ARE GOING UN-REPORTED. PLEASE GIVE THIS A VERY SERIOUS LOOK. YOU NEVER KNOW THE LIFE YOU SAVE COULD BE YOUR OWN OR SOMEONE CLOSE TO YOU WHO HAS ONE OF THESE VEHICLES OR IS NEAR ONE OF THEM WHEN THE STEERING GOES OUT. ONE INJURY OR DEATH WOULD BE TOO MUCH WHEN THIS MATTER HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO LIGHT BY SO MANY PEOPLE. *TR

RE: 2006 CHEVY COBALT (PURCHASED JUNE 29, 2006) WHILE TRAVELING HOME ON CHRISTMAS EVE, THE POWER STEERING ALARM BEEPED AND IMMEDIATELY THE POWER STEERING WAS DISABLED AND IT BECAME DIFFICULT TO STEER THE CAR. IT STARTED AFTER AROUND ABOUT 45 MINUTES OF CONTINUOUS DRIVING.THE CAR HAS TO BE RESTARTED TO REGAIN POWER STEERING AND THE PROBLEM (DISABLING OF POWER STEERING) RETURNS AFTER ABOUT 30 MINUTES OF DRIVING. DUE TO FINANCIAL SITUATIONS THE CAR HASN'T BEEN TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR REPAIRS. DIAGNOSTICS COSTS WILL BE $91, TO CHECK SENSORS WHICH DEALER STATED WAS MOST LIKELY THE ISSUE. *TR

I BEGAN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE ELECTRICAL POWER STEERING ASSIST IN MY 2006 CHEVY COBALT IN DECEMBER 2009. THE POWER STEERING INDICATOR WOULD COME ON THE MESSAGE SCREEN, FOLLOWED BY A DINGING SOUND & DIFFICULTY STEERING MY VEHICLE. I LEARNED OF THE "VOLUNTARY" RECALL OF MY MODEL VEHICLE ON A NEWS BROADCAST & DECIDED TO AWAIT WRITTEN NOTIFICATION FROM CHEVY. THE LETTER NEVER CAME, BUT THE PROBLEM HAS WORSENED. MY CAR IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT TO STEER & I CALLED CHEVY ABOUT IT YESTERDAY. I WAS INFORMED THAT MY CAR'S VIN ISN'T INCLUDED IN THE RECALL & I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIRS AS I SHOULDN'T BE HAVING THE PROBLEM. I HAVEN'T HAD THE CAR REPAIRED BECAUSE I'VE HAD ESTIMATES OF $90 TO LOOK AT IT & STEERING REPLACEMENT COSTS RANGING FROM $1200-$2000. I CAN'T AFFORD THE REPAIRS RIGHT NOW, BUT AM AFRAID OF A POSSIBLE ACCIDENT AS IT'S ESPECIALLY DIFFICULT TURNING AROUND CURVES. *TR
I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE FREEWAY AT ABOUT 60 MPH WHEN THE POWER STEERING LIGHT STARTED BLINKING. ALL OF A SUDDEN MY STEERING WHEEL GOT REAL STIFF. I WAS SCARED TO DEATH, MY 2 YEAR OLD SON WAS IN THE BACKSEAT. I IMMEDIATELY GOT OFF THE FREEWAY AND SHUT THE CAR OFF. WHEN I TURNED THE CAR BACK ON, IT WAS BACK TO NORMAL UNTIL ABOUT A COUPLE OF BLOCKS LATER THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED AGAIN. FINALLY I JUST STOPPED AND DECIDED TO TOW IT TO THE DEALERSHIP. NOW THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THEY PROBABLY WONT GET A DIAGNOSTIC UNTIL AFTER JANUARY 1ST. BESIDE THE FACT THAT I AM SO ANGRY AT GM FOR PUTTING SUCH A FAULTY PIECE OF "YOU KNOW WHAT" ON THE ROAD, I AM THANKFUL NOTHING HAPPENED TO ME AND MY SON. THIS IS A SERIOUS DEFECT THAT NEEDS ATTENTION FROM GM. NOT TO MENTION ALL THE COSTS THAT I HAD TO PAY. SOMEONE WILL GET KILLED!!! *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT CONTROL PANEL, AND THEN THE POWER STEERING FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER HAS NOT PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST ON THE VEHICLE AT THIS TIME. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 62,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

MY CHEVY COBALT 2006 MODEL SHOWS "POWER STEERING" ON THE LITTLE DISPLAY AND POWER STEERING STOPS WORKING. THIS IS REALLY SCARY WHEN I DRIVE ON THE FREE WAYS IN LOS ANGELES WHICH CAN GIVE SERIOUS TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS..THIS POWER STEERING MESSAGE POP UPS ONCE IN A WHILE. *TR

I HAVE A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT LT. I HAVE 39,000 MILES ON IT AND HAVE HAD NUMEROUS ISSUES WITH THE CAR! THE MAIN ISSUE SEEMS TO BE THE POWER STEERING. I WAS 4 HOURS FROM HOME AND MY POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON. MY WHEEL LOCKED UP AND WAS HARD TO STEER. I CUT THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON AND IT SEEMED TO CORRECT IT FOR ABOUT A MINUTE AND THEN LOCKED UP COMPLETELY. THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE IN NUMEROUS COBALTS THAT I HAVE SEEN. I TALKED WITH OTHER PEOPLE WHO OWN THEM AND THEY HAVE THE SAME ISSUES MINE HAS. THAT GOES TO SHOW THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE CHEVY COBALT. MOST PEOPLE HAVE HAD THE KEY STICK IN THE IGNITION (I HAVE HAD TO HAVE THAT REPLACED) AND NOW POWER STEERING! PLEASE DO SOMETHING! *TR
POWER STEERING GOES OUT WITHOUT WARNING. I CAN BE DRIVING ALONG AND IT JUST GOES OUT. I STRUGGLE TO GAIN CONTROL OF MY CAR. IT IS VERY DANGEROUS AND I AM AFRAID FOR THE SAFELY OF THE OTHER PASSENGERS IN MY VEHICLE AS WELL AS THOSE DRIVING NEAR TO ME. THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED I WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND SHUT THE CAR OFF. WAITED A FEW MINUTES THEN RESTARTED THE CAR EVERYTHING SEEMED FINE AND THEN IT DID IT AGAIN ABOUT A MILE DOWN THE ROAD. THIS IS VERY SCARY NOT TO MENTION DANGEROUS. WITH THIS HAPPENING ON A CONSTANT BASIS I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE THEREFORE CAUSING ADDITIONAL EXPENSE FOR ALTERNATE WAYS TO WORK. THE LOCAL GM DEALERSHIP REFUSED TO EVEN LOOK AT THE CAR ANYMORE SAYING THEY WERE ADVISED BY GM. THIS IS BECAUSE THE ORIGINAL DEALERSHIP WE PURCHASED THE CAR FROM IS BEING SUED BY GM FOR A 7 MILLION DOLLAR DEBT AND THEY DON'T WANT TO DEAL WITH THEIR ISSUES. THE CAR HAS SPENT MORE TIME IN THE SHOP THAN WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DRIVE IT. I HAVE WELL OVER 30 REPAIR ORDERS FOR MY STEERING COLUMN ALONE. WE HAD A MECHANIC CONTACT THE LOCAL GM REP TO SEE IF HE COULD HELP BUT THE REP WONT EVEN CALL BACK. WE HAD STARTED TO HAVE PROBLEM WITH THE CAR WITHIN 24 HOURS OF LEASING IT NEW. GM HAS DONE NOTHING WE CONTACTED AN ATTORNEY BUT IT SEEMS GM WOULD RATHER PAY THEIR HIGH PRICE ATTORNEYS TO GIVE US THE RUN AROUND THAN FIX THE PROBLEM AND SATISFY A CUSTOMER. THE PROBLEM OCCURRED AT 41,000 MILES WARRANTY IS EXPIRED. DUE TO THIS EXPERIENCE I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER GM VEHICLE AGAIN. *TR

I HAD NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH MY CAR UNTIL THE POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON ONE DAY AND I COULDN'T STEER THE CAR ALL OF A SUDDEN. I HAD NEVER EXPERIENCED ANY THING LIKE THAT BEFORE SO I PULLED OVER AND TURNED OFF THE CAR. AFTER RE-STARTING THE CAR IT WAS FINE. HOWEVER, THE POWER-STEERING CONTINUED TO LOCK UP ON ATLEAST ONCE A DAY, BUT WITH INCREASING FREQUENCY. I DID NOT HAVE THE MONEY TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT, BUT I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE IT AS LONG AS I USED FULL FORCE WITH BOTH ARMS TO STEER AND TURN. IT IS NOW TO THE POINT WHERE THE POWER STEERING LOCKS UP IMMEDIATELY UPON STARTING MY CAR. IT IS INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT TO MAKE SIMPLE TURNS AND IT HAS BECOME A SAFETY HAZARD. WHEN DRIVING THE POWER STEERING WOULD CUT OFF AFTER THE CAR WAS DRIVEN FOR A SHORT DISTANCE. THIS WAS 8 WEEKS AGO. NOW, THE POWER STEERING IS COMPLETELY NOT WORKING. *TR

AFTER RESTARTING THE VEHICLE THE ERROR CODE WILL RESET. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND HE WAS ADVISED TO HAVE THE VEHICLE DIAGNOSED AND REPAIRED IF NECESSARY, BUT AT THE OWNERS EXPENSE. TRIED TO UNLOCK DOOR USING THE REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY. THE PASSENGER DOOR UNLOCKED, HOWEVER THE DRIVER'S DOOR REMAINED LOCKED. I THEN TRIED UNLOCKING THE DRIVER'S DOOR WITH THE KEY. THE KEY TURNED, HOWEVER THE DOOR REMAINED LOCKED. I ENTERED THE CAR VIA THE PASSENGER DOOR AND TRIED UNLOCKING THE DRIVER'S DOOR USING THE POWER LOCK BUTTON, HOWEVER THE DRIVER'S DOOR REMAINED LOCKED. I THEN TRIED UNLOCKING THE DOOR BY MANUALLY PULLING UP ON THE "POPUP" LOCK AND PULLING ON THE HANDLE, HOWEVER THE DRIVER'S DOOR REMAINED LOCKED. I TOOK THE COBALT TO A DEALER, AND THEY DETERMINED THE LATCH WAS FAULTY. THEY REPLACED THE DRIVER'S DOOR LATCH AT A COST OF 264.04. *TR

YESTERDAY, DEC 16,2009, MY NEIGHBOR CALLED ME ON THE PHONE AND SAID, "I NOTICED WALKING BY YOUR CAR, A STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE." I CHECKED, AND THERE WAS A SMALL PUDDLE OF GASOLINE UNDER THE CAR UNDER THE REAR END.. I TOOK THE CAR TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP TODAY, DEC 17, 2009.. THEY SAID THAT THERE WAS A "CRACK" ON THE FUEL PUMP AND REPLACED IT. I PAID FOR THE REPAIR. AFTER I GOT HOME, I CHECKED THE NHTSA WEB SITE AND FOUND THAT HERE IS A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM ON MY CAR. GREAT EFFORT IS NEEDED TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL 90 DEGREES (THIS IS NOT LIKE DRIVING AN OLD CAR WITHOUT POWER STREERING). CONDITION STARTED AT ABOUT 39000 MILES AND THE CAR HAS ABOUT 40550 MILES ON IT TODAY. PROBLEM OCCURS AT VARIOUS INTERVALS BUT IS BECOMING MORE FREQUENT. THE CAR MUST BE STOPPED, ENGINE SHUTDOWN, AND CAR RESTARTED TO TEMPORARILY CLEAR THE CONDITION. SITUATION HAS NOT BEEN CORRECTED AS OF 2/8/2010. CHEVROLET CUSTOMER SERVICE SAID A RECALL IS PENDING (THEY ALLEGEDLY ARE COOPERATING WITH NHSTA AT THIS TIME ON A RECALL), BUT CANNOT COMMIT TO FIXING THEIR DEFECT IN MY CAR. INTERNET RESEARCH INDICATES REPAIRS CAN BE UP TO $2000 BECUASE INDIVIDUAL REPAIR PARTS CAN ONLY BE PURCHASED AS A LARGE KIT. I HAVE BEGUN DISCUSSIONS WITH LOCAL DEALERSHIP TRYING TO GET CHEVROLET TO DO THE RIGHT THING AND PAY FOR THE REPAIR SINCE IT IS A WELL DOCUMENTED DEFECT CURRENTLY BEING INVESTIGATED BY NHSTA. ELECTRONIC STEERING IN THE CHEVY COBALT. AROUND OCT 2009, I BOUGHT A 2006 CHEVY COBALT, PRIMARILY FOR MY DAUGHTER TO CONTINUE HER DRIVERS ED TRAINING AND PRACTICE. I NOTICED WHEN SHE TRIED TO PARALLEL PARK WITHIN THE 3 MINUTE MVA TIME LIMIT THAT SHE WOULD LOOSE POWER STEERING AND THE WHEEL WOULD LOCK. IT WOULD STAY LOCKED FOR SOME TIME (A FEW MINUTES). MY DAUGHTER MENTIONED THAT SHE WASN'T ALLOWED TO DRIVE THE CHEVY COBALT AT HER DRIVERS ED TRAINING BECAUSE OF THE SAME PROBLEM--SO THE COMPANY COULDN'T USE THE VEHICLES FOR THE STUDENTS TO PRACTICE PARALLEL PARKING. THE COMPANY WAS FRIENDLY DRIVING ACADEMY IN GLEN BURNIE, MD I FILED A COMPLAINT WITH GM CUSTOMER SERVICE AND TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY WERE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM, BUT THAT IS HOW THE CAR IS DESIGNED. I TOLD THEM THAT I THOUGHT IT WAS POOR ENGINEERING AND THAT TRYING TO MAKE PARALLEL PARKING ADJUSTMENTS WITHIN A 3 MINUTE MVA TIME LIMIT SHOULD NOT CAUSE THE STEERING TO LOCK.
