2006 CHEVY COBALT - KEY FREQUENTLY GETS STUCK IN IGNITION AND POWER STEERING HAS BEGUN TO FAIL. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT CONTROL PANEL, AND THEN HE LOST POWER STEERING. AFTER RESTARTING THE VEHICLE THE POWER CAME BACK ON. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 71,400.
LOSS OF POWER STEERING AFTER A WARNING LIGHT APPEARED. NEARLY CAUSED A WRECK AS WE WERE TURNING IN A BUSY INTERSECTION. FIRST OCCURRENCE, THE CAR IS AT THE DEALERSHIP RIGHT NOW. FOUND THAT THIS HAS BEEN A COMMON OCCURRENCE WITH THE CHEVY COBALT FOR SEVERAL YEARS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH THE "POWER STEERING" WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL, AND THEN THERE WAS A LOSS OF POWER STEERING. THE DRIVER EXERTED GREAT EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. THE FAILURE OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED AT THIS TIME. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 25,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING, SHE LOSES POWER STEERING. PRIOR TO THE FAILURE SHE NOTICES THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT CONTROL PANEL. USUALLY SHE HAS TO RESTART HER VEHICLE TO RESUME NORMAL VEHICLE OPERATION. SHE CONTACTED THE DEALER, BUT NO ASSISTANCE WAS PROVIDED. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES 70000.
I OWN A 2006 CHEVY COBALT SS WITH ONLY 23,000 MILES ON IT AND THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT WHEN MY 19-YEAR-OLD SON WAS DRIVING IT. HAVING REVIEWED FORUM SITES ON THIS MATTER, IT SEEMS THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE COBALT AND IT SHOULD BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF GM TO FIX THIS OBVIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM. IF THEY FAIL TO MAKE GOOD ON THIS MATTER, THEY ONLY HAVE THEMSELVES TO BLAME FOR THEIR SPIRALING DOWNFALL. *TR
I WAS GETTING OFF FREEWAY TURNING RIGHT HEARD A BEEP SOUND AND ALL OF A SUDDEN WHEEL WASN'T TURNING I WAS LUCKY THAT ONCOMING CAR MOVED OUT OF MY WAY PULLED OVER AND NOTICED WARNING WORDS ON SCREEN SAYING POWER STEERING. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH THE POWER STEERING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT CONTROL PANEL, AND THEN THERE WAS A LOSS OF POWER STEERING. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 68,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 68,100. THE VIN NUMBER WAS UNAVAILABLE.
WHILE DRIVING ON A STRAIGHT STRETCH OF I 40 IN NORTH CAROLINA, THE POWER STEERING MESSAGE FLASHED, AND THEN WE LOST POWER STEERING. THERE WERE SEVERAL CARS AROUND US AT THE TIME. AFTER PULLING OVER TO CHECK UNDER THE HOOD (IT WAS AFTER DARK AND WE COULDN'T SEE UNDER THE HOOD), WE RESTARTED THE CAR AND HAD POWER STEERING AGAIN, BUT LOST IT WITHIN 2 MILES. WE DROVE IT AGAIN THE NEXT DAY AND THE DAY AFTER, AND THE SITUATION DID NOT REPEAT ITSELF. WE TOOK THE CAR TO A CHEVY DEALERSHIP ON 12/14/09, WHERE THEY INFORMED US THE PROBLEM WAS WITH THE POWER STEERING MOTOR, AND IT WAS REPLACED OUT OF WARRANTY (2006 CHEVY COBALT WITH APPROXIMATELY 33.5K MILES AT TIME OF INCIDENT) FOR APPROXIMATELY $500. THEY ALSO TOLD US THE MOTOR REPLACEMENT MIGHT NOT FIX THE WHOLE PROBLEM, AND IF IT HAPPENED AGAIN THEY WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE THE COLUMN FOR AN ADDITIONAL $700. WE OPTED TO HAVE THE PART REPLACED BECAUSE THE CAR IS OFTEN DRIVEN ON WINDING MOUNTAIN ROADS AND LOSING POWER STEERING ON THESE ROADS PRESENTS A MAJOR SAFETY RISK. *TR
I HAVE A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. IT HAS 43,000 MILES. IT IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION OTHERWISE. THE POWER STEERING LIGHT SUDDENLY COMES ON AND THE POWER STEERING CAPABILITY IS LOST. IT HAS BEEN TO THE MECHANIC TWO TIMES AND HE HAS FOUND NO FAILED COMPONENTS. THE FAILURE OCCURS WHILE DRIVING AND WHEN STARTED AFTER BEING PARKED IN OUR DRIVEWAY. POWER STEERING EVENTUALLY ABRUPTLY RETURN TO NORMAL. THE CAR ALSO SHUDDERS AND OCCASIONALLY STALLS DURING THE POWER STEERING FAILURE EPISODE. MY WIFE IS FEARFUL TO DRIVE THIS AUTO. IT SHOULD BE RECALLED AND REPAIRED. *TR
WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE IN MY 2006 COBALT SS, MY POWERSTEERING WARNING LIGHT APPEARS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. I THOUGHT IT WAS SHORT POWER STEERING FLUID BUT IT HAS NO RESERVOIR BECAUSE IT IS ELECTRIC AND NOT HYDRAULIC. THE PROBLEM GOES AWAY AFTER YOU RESTART THE CAR BUT IT RANDOMLY OCCURS WHILE DRIVING ON ALL TYPES OF HIGHWAYS. *TR
THE CAR ONLY HAS 38,000 MILES AND WE WERE DRIVING HOME WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE POWER STEERING MESSAGE CAME UP AND THE STEERING WHEEL GOT REALLY HARD, IT TAKES ALL YOUR ENERGY TO MAKE A TURN. WHEN WE TURNED OFF AND THEN TURNED ON THE CAR EVERYTHING WAS OKAY AND A COUPLE OF BLOCKS IT HAPPENED AGAIN. IT WILL NORMALLY HAPPEN IN THE AFTERNOONS, NOT SO MUCH IN THE MORNING. WE HAVE A 2006 CHEVY COBALT THAT WAS PURCHASED FOR OUR CHILDREN'S USE. MY VERY LARGE HUSBAND HAD BEEN USING IT WHILE MY DAUGHTER WAS AWAY AT COLLEGE. THE POWER STEERING ALL OF A SUDDEN STARTED GOING OUT WHILE HE WAS DRIVING. HE WOULD TURN THE CAR OFF, AND THE POWER STEERING WOULD RETURN, BUT IT WOULD CUT OUT AGAIN. WE BROUGHT IT TO OUR MECHANIC WHO FIXED IT, BUT IT IS A COSTLY REPAIR AS HE WAS REQUIRED TO BUY THE WHOLE STEERING COLUMN JUST FOR ONE PART. I UNDERSTAND FROM INFORMATION I'VE READ THAT JUST BECAUSE IT'S FIXED DOESN'T MEAN IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN!!! I HESITATE TO LET MY DAUGHTER USE THIS CAR AGAIN AS THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH THE POWER STEERING FAILED WITHOUT WARNING AND IT BECAME DIFFICULT TO CONTROL THE STEERING WHEEL; HOWEVER, HE WAS ABLE TO MANUALLY DRIVE THE VEHICLE TO HIS RESIDENCE. THE POWER STEERING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AFTER THE FAILURE OCCURRED. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE POWER STEERING MOTOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT AN ESTIMATED COST OF $ 1,000. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY BETWEEN 25-30 MPH ON NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS, PROCEEDING TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN WHEN A CHIME SENSOR SOUNDED INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE AND THE "POWER STEERING" WARNING LIGHT INDICATOR ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. IMMEDIATELY, THERE WAS A LOSS OF POWER STEERING. THE DRIVER CONTINUED IN OPERATION AND EXERTED HIGHER EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR INSPECTION. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED AT THIS TIME. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.

THE STEERING COLUMN WAS REPLACED ONE YEAR AGO. THE CONTACT HAS NOT TAKEN THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE THAT COULD RESULT IN SOMEONE LOSING THEIR LIFE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGE WERE 102,000.
I HAVE LOST POWER STEERING IN MY 2006 CHEVY COBALT. IT IS DANGEROUS AND NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. HOW IS IT THAT GM IS NOT TAKING RESPONSIBILITY OVER THIS SAFETY HAZARD, BUT THEY ARE SUING THE COMPANY THAT MADE THESE ELECTRICAL POWER STEERING? DETROIT GENERAL MOTORS CO. HAS SUED A SUPPLIER, SAYING IT HAS SPENT MORE THAN $30 MILLION FIXING PROBLEMS IN THE STEERING SYSTEMS OF THE CHEVROLET COBALT, ITS BEST-SELLING SMALL CAR, AND OTHER VEHICLES. GM SAID CUSTOMERS HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT UNUSUAL RATTLES, "CLUNKS" AND OTHER NOISES. IT PINPOINTED THE FLAW TO "EXCESSIVE GEAR BACKLASH," WHICH CAUSES PROBLEMS IN THE STEERING COLUMN UNDER CERTAIN DRIVING CONDITIONS. THE LAWSUIT NAMES JTEKT NORTH AMERICA INC., BASED IN PLYMOUTH, MICH., AND AN AFFILIATED COMPANY, JTEKT AUTOMOTIVE VIRGINIA INC. OF DALEVILLE, VA. GM SAID IT WANTS TO BE PAID FOR REPLACING THOUSANDS OF PARTS UNDER CUSTOMER WARRANTY CLAIMS ON THE COBALT, PURSUIT, G5, HHR AND OTHER CARS, STARTING WITH 2005 MODEL YEAR. BY FALL, THE COST HAD EXCEEDED $30 MILLION, AND "GM'S DAMAGES ARE EXPECTED TO CONTINUE TO INCREASE AS ADDITIONAL WARRANTY CLAIMS ARE MADE," THE AUTOMAKER'S LAWSUIT SAID. "JTEKT CONTENDS THE COMPONENTS ALL MET THE SPECIFICATIONS AND TESTING REQUIREMENTS THAT GM GAVE IT," SAID BOB HADDAD, A LAWYER FOR THE SUPPLIER. "THE ISSUES DO NOT AFFECT THE OPERATOR'S ABILITY TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE. THIS IS A NOISE ISSUE." CHANGES WERE MADE AT GM'S REQUEST, AND JTEKT CONTINUES TO PROVIDE STEERING ASSEMBLIES, HADDAD SAID MONDAY. THE STEERING SYSTEMS ARE IN TENS OF THOUSANDS OF GM CARS. COURT PAPERS DO NOT INDICATE WHETHER THE COMPANY CONSIDERS THIS A SAFETY ISSUE. A GM SPOKESMAN, ALAN ADLER, HAD NO IMMEDIATE COMMENT. THE LAWSUIT WAS FILED IN AUGUST IN MACOMB COUNTY CIRCUIT COURT, AMENDED THERE IN OCTOBER AND MOVED NOV. 17 TO FEDERAL COURT IN DETROIT. *TR
THE POWER STEERING ON MY 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT LOCKED UP WITH NO WARNING AND MY CAR WENT OFF THE ROAD ONTO SOME GRASS. THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD NOT TURN ONE WAY OR THE OTHER UNTIL THE CAR WAS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED. I WAS ONLY GOING 35 MPH AT THE TIME THE STEERING DID THIS, OR WHAT HAPPENED COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH WORSE.*TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THE STEERING MOTOR WAS REPLACED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 89000.

HE STATED THAT THE POWER STEERING FAILED INTERMITTENTLY WHILE HE WAS DRIVING AND CAUSED HIM TO LOSE STEERING CONTROL AND HAVE MUCH DIFFICULTY CONTROLLING THE STEERING WHEEL. HE WOULD TURN THE VEHICLE OFF AND RE-START IT AND WAS ABLE TO CONTINUE DRIVING UNTIL THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. POWER STEERING HAS GONE OUT SEVERAL TIMES, LEAVING THE CAR VERY DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER. TOOK VEHICLE TO SAUDER CHEVROLET IN BROWNSTOWN, PA AND WE WERE TOLD IT WAS "NORMAL FOR THAT MODEL CAR"! *TR

I HAVE SENT A LETTER TO CHEVY DIRECTLY AND I FEEL THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED TO YOU AS WELL. I PURCHASED A CHEVY COBALT A FEW YEARS BACK. THE COBALT IS AN 06. FOR ABOUT 4 MONTHS NOW MY KEY HAS BEEN GETTING STUCK IN THE IGNITION AT THE ACC POINT. IT WILL NOT ALLOW ME TO TURN PAST THAT POINT. I HAVE FOUND THE LITTLE PLUNGER TO REMOVE MY KEYS IN THE STEERING WHEEL COLUMN. THE SECOND ISSUE THAT ARISES WITH THIS IS THAT MY GEARSHIFTER MOVES WHEN THE CAR IS OFF. THIS IS A HAZARD AS ONE DAY THE SHIFTER GOT SHIFTED OUT OF GEAR AND STARTED TO ROLL AWAY. MY CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY, BUT THIS SEEMS TO BE AN ISSUE I HAVE SEEN POSTED ON THE NET THAT MANY HAVE EXPERIENCED. MY MOTHER HAS AN 05 COBALT THAT HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM SHE HAD THE KEY ASSEMBLY AND THE GEAR SHIFTER REPLACED. I'M A SOON TO BE MOM AND THIS ISSUE NEEDS TO BE RESOLVED. YESTERDAY I WAS DRIVING WITH MY WIFE IN OUR 2006 CHEVY COBALT AND WITHOUT ANY WARNING THE POWER STEERING FAILED IN THE MIDDLE OF A TURN. I HAD TO PULL WITH EVERYTHING I HAD TO KEEP FROM HITTING A CAR IN THE OTHER LANE ON THE ROAD I WAS TURNING ONTO. LUCKILY I WAS DRIVING, I DON'T THINK THE ENDING WOULD HAVE BEEN AS PLEASANT IF MY WIFE WAS BEHIND THE WHEEL. KEEP IN MIND THAT THE POWER STEERING FAILS ALL OF THE SUDDEN, WE HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR, AND MY WIFE JUST REMINDED ME THAT WE HAD THE STEERING COLUMN REPLACED ONCE BECAUSE OF A VIBRATION. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT WHICH WAS PURCHASED IN 2007. SHE STATED THAT THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT CONTROL PANEL AND THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME DIFFICULT TO TURN. THE DEALER STATED THAT SHE WAS TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL IN THE WRONG DIRECTION AND THAT IS WHAT CAUSED THE STEERING WHEEL TO LOCK. THE DEALER ALSO STATED THAT WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKS THAT IS A NORMAL FUNCTION FOR HER YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL VEHICLE. THE FAILURE ALSO OCCURRED ON A HIGHWAY WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH WITHOUT MAKING ANY LEFT OR RIGHT TURNS. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE UNDER 73,259.
I HAVE A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT AND THE POWER STEERING KEEPS GOING OUT/DISABLING/NOT FUNCTIONING WHEN BEING DRIVEN. THIS HAPPENS WITH NO WARNING AND VERY FREQUENTLY AND CAUSES ME TO ALMOST LOSE CONTROL OF THE CAR. I SINCERELY BELIEVE THAT SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THE POWER STEERING PUMP OR THE STEERING COLUMN. *TR
THE STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM KEEPS GIVING OUT. WHILE DRIVING AT A SLOW SPEED THE CAR SHAKES AND IT IS HARD TO KEEP CONTROL OF THE STEERING. IT OFTEN GOES TO ONE SIDE OR ANOTHER. *TR
RANDOM FAILURE OF POWER STEERING. FAILS 3-5 TIMES DURING 15-20 MINUTE COMMUTE WHICH CAUSES VEHICLE STEERING TO BECOME STIFF. TEMPORARY RESOLUTION IS TURNING VEHICLE OFF AND BACK ON, GIVING YOU ANOTHER 5 MINUTES OF POWER STEERING. NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE YET TO FIX THE PROBLEM SINCE IT'S AN $800 - $1500 OUT-OF-POCKET REPAIR AT THE DEALERSHIP. I MAY TRY TO PURCHASE THE POWER STEERING MOTOR ($230- DEALERSHIP ONLY) AND INSTALL MYSELF BUT THAT MEANS PULLING OUT THE STEERING COLUMN, DISABLING AIRBAG, AND HOPING EVERYTHING WORKS CORRECTLY WHEN YOU PUT IT BACK TOGETHER. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS SINCE THIS IS MY WIFE'S VEHICLE WHICH SHE USES TO GET TO WORK AND CARRY MY 1 YEAR OLD GIRL TO BABY SITTER. THIS HAS FAILED DURING TURNS, AND EVEN WHEN GOING 55 MPH, IT IS STILL VERY DIFFICULT TO MAKE A 60 DEGREE TURN. *TR
MY 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT HAD A SUDDEN LOSS OF STEERING ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION WHILE DRIVING. I COULD STOP THE CA AND TURN IT OFF FOR A FEW MINUTES AND THEN RESTART IT AND THE POWER STEERING WOULD BE OK FOR AWHILE. JUST RECENTLY THE POWER STEERING WENT UP IN THE CAR WHILE I WAS DRIVING HOME AND THE SPEEDOMETER STARTING JUMPING AROUND AND I COULD NOT TELL HOW FAST I WAS DRIVING AND IF I WENT UNDER A 40 MPH THE CAR WOULD JUMP AND SHUT OFF IF I HAD TO STOP. NOW THE CAR'S POWER STEERING HAS GONE UP AGAIN AND I CAN'T TURN THE WHEEL AT ALL.
