I OWN A CHEVROLET COBALT (2006) WITH 40,000 MILES. THE CAR WILL START, BUT OCCASIONALLY THE POWER STEERING WILL GO, THE ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON, AND IT WILL SPUTTER AND HAVE TROUBLE ACCELERATING. WHEN I STOP IT MAKES A THUD NOISE. THIS OCCURS ONCE EVERY TWO DAYS, AND TO THIS POINT IT IS IN THE LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALER BEING DIAGNOSED. *TR
STEERING FAILURE IN THE CHEVROLET COBALT. I WAS DRIVING AND THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT. TOOK CAR IN TO THE CHEVROLET DEALERS SERVICES DEPARTMENT, I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT, I WAS TOLD THAT THIS PART WAS REPLACED BUT WHEN THEY TEST DROVE THE CAR THEY FOUND THE STEERING TO BE IMPOSSIBLE TO TURN. THEY RELEASED THE CAR BACK TO US WITHOUT SOLVING THE PROBLEM. I FIND THIS TO BE TROUBLING SINCE THIS IS THEIR PRODUCT. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM AND GM SHOULD BE LIABLE FOR THIS PROBLEM. THERE SHOULD A RECALL ON THE STEERING COLUMN IN THE COBALT, BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE ACCELERATING FROM A YIELD SIGN, THE VEHICLE SHIFTED INTO REVERSE, ROLLED BACKWARDS DOWN A STEEP HILL OVER A LEDGE AND ROLLED OVER. THE VEHICLE WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED. SHE HAS A COPY OF THE POLICE REPORT. SHE WAS WAITING FOR A RESPONSE FROM THE MANUFACTURER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.
WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS FOR APPROXIMATELY 5 MINUTES, I SLOWED TO MAKE A LEFT TURN WHEN I NOTICED THE STEERING WHEEL WAS HARD TO TURN, AS I LOOKED AT THE DASH TO MAKE SURE THE ENGINE HAD NOT DIED, I NOTICED THAT THE POWER STEERING MESSAGE WAS ON. AFTER I STOPPED TO ATTEMPT TO LOCATE THE POWER STEERING RESERVOIR...(WHICH I LATER DETERMINED THAT THIS VEHICLE DOES NOT HAVE.) UPON RE-STARTING THE VEHICLE IT SEEMED TO WORK FINE...FOR ABOUT TEN MILES. I TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF AND RESTARTED WITH A RESOLUTION OF HE PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM RE-OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES ON THE WAY HOME. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 57,102. THIS VEHICLE WILL BE PARKED IN UNTIL I CONTACT A DEALER ON MONDAY TO REPORT THIS PROBLEM. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE TRANSPORTING MY FAMILY IN THIS VEHICLE. AFTER SEARCHING THE INTERNET AND THIS SITE...IT APPEARS THIS IS A BIG PROBLEM ON THESE VEHICLES. GM SHOULD LOOK AT THIS CAREFULLY AND NOTICE THAT THERE HAVE BEEN NO DEATHS OR INJURIES>>>>YET>>>! WITH THE CURRENT FINANCIAL TROUBLES OF AUTOMAKERS TODAY...I DOUBT THE WOULD REALLY WANT A HUGE INJURY OR DEATH RELATED LAWSUIT TO BE FILED AGAINST THEM. EVERYONE WITH A VOICE (AND A COBALT WITH PROBLEMS) SHOULD MAKE THEMSELVES HEARD AND VOICE THESE COMPLAINTS! TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE POWER STEERING FAILS WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS. AS A RESULT, THE STEERING WHEEL BECOMES VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN. THE DEALER STATED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS AND THE WARRANTY WAS EXPIRED; THEREFORE, THE CONTACT WOULD HAVE TO PAY OVER $3,000 FOR THE REPAIRS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 36,000.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AS IT RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION. THE FAILURE OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY ON SEVERAL OTHER OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING BUT THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 10,000. I HAVE A 2006 CHEVY COBALT WHICH I'M UPSET TO SAY HAS CAUSED ME TO ALMOST BE INVOLVED IN VARIOUS ACCIDENTS. THIS PROBLEM STARTED SINCE DECEMBER, 2006. WHILE DRIVING, MY "POWER STEERING" WARNING COMES ON, AND BEFORE YOU KNOW IT, YOU LOOSE CONTROL OF YOUR CAR. THIS HAS ALMOST MADE ME GET INTO A FEW ACCIDENTS. THE MANUFACTURERS SHOULD BE MORE SERIOUS ABOUT THE CONSUMER'S SAFETY. I'M ENRAGED AND TERRIFIED TO THINK THIS MIGHT HAPPEN WHEN I'M IN THE CAR WITH MY KIDS. AS A RESULT, I DON'T GO OUT TO PREVENT ANY ACCIDENTS. MANUFACTURERS SHOULD DO SOMETHING TO RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM. I'M PRETTY SURE, IF THEY WERE THE ONES WHO DROVE MY CAR, THEY WOULD BE MORE SELECTIVE ABOUT THE QUALITY OF THEIR PRODUCT. I WILL NEVER OWN A CHEVY AGAIN. *TR
I ALMOST GOT IN A MAJOR ACCIDENT A WEEK AGO BECAUSE MY POWER STEERING FAILED ON MY 2006 CHEVY COBALT SS/SC. MY WARRANTY IS UP AND THE DEALER TOLD ME IT WOULD BE 900 DOLLARS TO FIX. I AM DISGUSTED THIS IS NOT RECALLED. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND NEEDS TO BE RECALLED. AND I UNDERSTAND THERE ARE ALOT OF OTHER PEOPLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH THE POWER STEERING LIGHT FLASHED ON THE DASHBOARD WITH A BEEPING SOUND AND THE VEHICLE LOST POWER STEERING MALFUNCTIONED. THE CONTACT HAD TO SHUT OFF THE VEHICLE AND RESTART IT SO THAT THE POWER STEERING WOULD FUNCTION PROPERLY. THE FAILURE OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE CONTACT HAS NOT TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 68,000.
AIRBAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY DURING T-BONE COLLISION AT A SPEED OF APROX. 45 MPH. NO SERIOUS INJURIES OCCURRED. AIRBAGS WOULD NOT DEPLOY EVEN WHEN DEALERSHIP REPRESENTATIVE TRIED TO MAKE THEM DEPLOY. VEHICLE HAD A RECALL ON SIDE AIRBAG AND WAS TAKEN FOR REPAIRS; HOWEVER NONE OF THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT A POWER STEERING MECHANISM IN HER VEHICLE FAILED THREE TIMES IN ONE DAY. SHE HAD TO TURN OFF THE VEHICLE AND WAIT FOR IT TO RESET ITSELF. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER HAVE NOT BEEN NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 68,400.

I BOUGHT MY 06 CHEVY COBALT IN OCTOBER 2008. THE POWER STEERING STARTED GOING OUT JUST A FEW OF MONTHS AGO. JUST YESTERDAY I CAN'T KEEP IT ON FOR MORE THAN FIVE MINUTES. IF I TURN THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON IT WORKS FOR A FEW MINUTES BUT GOES RIGHT OUT. THIS HAS HAPPENED DAILY FOR THE PAST 2-4 MONTHS. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN MY CHOICE OF VEHICLES BECAUSE IT HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS, AND IT ONLY HAS ABOUT 45000 MILES ON IT. THIS OFTEN HAPPENS WHILE ATTEMPTING TO TURN ONTO THE FREEWAY AND MAKES THE CAR VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN. THIS CAR IS VERY DANGEROUS, AND THERE IS NOTHING I CAN DO ABOUT IT BECAUSE OF THE EXPENSE FOR FIXING IT. HAVE NOT TAKEN IT TO A DEALERSHIP YET. *TR

THE CONTACT WAS STILL ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE, BUT WITH GREAT DIFFICULTY. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN INSPECTED BY A DEALER; HOWEVER, THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE REPAIR WOULD BE EXPENSIVE SINCE THERE WERE NO RECALLS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 68,000.
MY 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT WITH ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING HAS AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM IN THAT THE POWER STEERING JUST TURNS OFF. THERE ARE NO APPARENT REASONS WHY. I CAN DRIVE 1-2 DAYS WITH NO PROBLEM AND THE THIRD DAY IT WILL QUIT 4 OR 5 TIMES. TURNING THE CAR OFF AND RESTARTING IT TURNS IT BACK ON. CHEVROLET HAS RECALLED THE MALIBU BECAUSE OF THE SAME PROBLEM BUT NOTHING IS BEING DONE WITH THE COBALT. THIS OBVIOUSLY A BIG SAFETY ISSUE SINCE THE CAR IS VERY HARD TO STEER WHEN THE POWER STEERING JUST QUITS. I HAVE NOT HAD ANY ACCIDENTS YET DUE TO THIS PROBLEM AND WILL HAVE IT REPAIRED HOWEVER IT SEEMS A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE SOME UNEXPECTED PERSON HAS THIS HAPPEN AT AN INOPPORTUNE TIME RESULTING IN AN ACCIDENT. *TR
MY DAUGHTER'S FINGER WAS CUT WHEN THE CHROME PLATING ON THE DRIVER'S INSIDE DOOR HANDLE STARTED FLAKING OFF AND BECAME EXTREMELY SHARP. *TR

THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING IN MY CHEVY COBALT HAS A PROBLEM. I LIVE IN THE VIRGIN ISLAND, ST. CROIX. THE TEMP GETS TO 100 DEGREE. I GET THREE WARNING DINGS AND THE WORD POWER STEERING ON MY DASHBOARD AND IMMEDIATELY I HAVE NO POWER STEERING. WHEN IT COOL DOWN, IT WILL WORK FINE. ON ST. CROIX IT COST OVER $1000 TO CHECK AND FIX PLEASE HELP. THE ISLANDS ARE HILLY AND IT IS DANGEROUS TO TAKE CONNERS AND HILLS WITH OUT POWER STEERING. *TR

THE FAILURE PREVIOUSLY OCCURRED AT 20,000 MILES AND WAS REPORTED TO GM, BUT THEY NEVER TOOK ACTION OR REPAIRED THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD IN MAY AND THE POWER STEERING CUT OUT WHILE IN MOTION. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER, TURNED ENGINE OFF AND THEN RESTARTED THE VEHICLE. THE POWER STEERING BEGAN WORKING AGAIN, BUT THEN CUT OUT AGAIN AFTER A FEW MILES WHILE STILL DRIVING. THIS OCCURS EVERY TIME I DRIVE THE CAR; WORKS, CUTS OUT, I RESTART THE VEHICLE, POWER STEERING BEGINS WORKING, THEN CUTS OUT AGAIN....EVERYTIME I DRIVE!! MY MECHANIC HAS TRIED REPLACING THE COMPUTER CHIP AND EVERYTHING SHORT OF DISMANTLING THE VEHICLE. HE INFORMED ME THAT HE DISCOVERED THAT THOUSANDS OF COBALT OWNERS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. UNFORTUNATELY, GM REFUSES TO DO A RECALL DESPITE THE DANGER OF THE FAILURE. THE POWER STEERING COLUMN NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I AM HOPING GM WILL STEP UP TO ASSIST THEIR CUSTOMERS THAT CANNOT AFFORD THIS REPAIR. *TR
I OWN A 2006 CHEVY COBALT LS. I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS STEERING MY VEHICLE WHEN PARKING, BACKING OUT OF PARKING SPACES AND WHEN TRAVELING AT LOW SPEEDS AND TRYING TO TURN. I HAVE MENTIONED THIS PROBLEM TO MY CHEVY DEALERSHIP SERVICE CENTER AND THEY HAVE STATED THAT THIS IS JUST SOMETHING THAT HAPPENS WITH THE COBALTS OVER TIME. RECENTLY MY IGNITION LOCKED UP TWICE, AND RIGHT BEFORE IT LOCKED I FELT THE STEERING COLUMN TIGHTEN UP. NOT SURE IF THAT'S RELATED BUT IT MIGHT BE. THE SERVICE CENTER REPLACED THE SHIFTER IN THE VEHICLE AND IT HASN'T LOCKED UP AGAIN BUT THE STEERING WHEEL IS STILL TIGHTENING. *TR
MY WIFE WAS DRIVING TO THE STORE AND THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT. EVERY TIME WE GET IN THE CAR AND START IT THE POWER STEERING IS ON, THEN A MINUTE AFTER DRIVING THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT. I HAVE NOT FIXED THE PROBLEM BECAUSE I WAS TO IT MIGHT COST 1 TO 2 THOUSAND DOLLARS. I SHOULD NOT BE LIABLE FOR SOMETHING THAT WAS NOT MY FAULT. *TR

ON A SEPARATE OCCASION, WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS OF 60 MPH AND THE VEHICLE LOCKED. THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL IN EITHER DIRECTION. THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE WARNING PANEL AND THE VEHICLE STALLED. HE WAS ABLE TO MANEUVER THE VEHICLE OFF OF THE HIGHWAY WITHOUT INCIDENT. IN THE WARMER MONTHS, THE POWER STEERING ON MY 06 CHEVROLET COBALT WILL SUDDENLY QUIT WHILE DRIVING. IF I RESTART THE CAR, POWER STEERING WILL RETURN BUT ONLY FOR A MATTER OF MINUTES. IT BECOMES MOST DANGEROUS WHEN IT GOES OUT WHILE I'M MAKING A TURN. TWICE I HAVE ALMOST HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE WHILE TURNING IN TO A DRIVEWAY. I BELIEVE THIS FAILURE TO BE A MAJOR SAFETY HAZARD AND I'M GLAD THE NHTSA IS FINALLY LOOKING INTO IT. *TR

THE DRIVER PULLED THE VEHICLE OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND TURNED OFF THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED AFTER A FEW MOMENTS AND RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION. THE FAILURE OCCURS WITHOUT WARNING WHENEVER THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING AND THEY STATED THAT THE STEERING MOTOR FAILED. THE REPAIR PART WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 52,051.
MY SON OWNS A 2006 CHEVY COBALT. THE POWER STEERING LIGHT COMES ON AND THEN THE POWER STEER LOCKS UP TO WHERE YOU ARE UNABLE TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. THE QUICK FIX IS TO CUT OFF THE IGNITION AND RESTART. THIS IS ONLY A SHORT TERM FIX AS IT HAPPENS AGAIN WITHIN THE NEXT 10 MILES OR SO AND IS BECOMING MORE FREQUENT AS TIME GOES ON. I HAVE SEEN RECALLS ON HERE FOR LESSER THINGS LIKE NOT ENOUGH AMBER IN A TURN SIGNAL? HOW IS THIS ANY MORE DANGEROUS THAN LOSING THE ABILITY TO STEER WHILE DOING 70 MPH ON THE INTERSTATE? IT IS A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE A DEATH OR PERMANENT DISABILITY HAPPENS TO SOMEONE. GM HAS TO BE AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM BY NOW. MY HUSBAND AND I PURCHASED TO 2006 CHEVY COBALT IN SEPTEMBER OF 06. SINCE THE PURCHASE OF MY , "BRAND NEW" CAR THE AIR CONDITIONING, POWER LOCKS, AND POWER STEERING HAVE ALL CEASED TO WORK. MY AIR CONDITIONING ONLY WORKED FOR ONE SUMMER. THE POWER LOCKS WENT OUT ABOUT 6 MONTHS AGO. NOW, THE MOST CONCERNING IS THAT MY POWER STEERING HAS NOW FAILED. I TURN THE CAR ON AND HAVE POWER STEERING FOR APPROXIMATELY 2-3 MINUTES, THEN THE CARS POWER STEERING FAILS. I WILL NEVER HAVE THE MONEY TO REPLACE ANY PARTS BECAUSE OF THE HIGH PAYMENTS AND INSURANCE. MY POOR HUSBAND IS A PIZZA DELIVERY PERSON! THIS IS THE WORST THING TO HAPPEN. I TRIED TO BUY AN AMERICAN MADE CAR HOPING THAT I WOULD AT LEAST GET TO DRIVE IT FOR A FEW YEARS WITHOUT HAVING IT BREAK DOWN. NOW GM IS GETTING MY PAYCHECK AND THE TAXES THEY TOOK OUT OF IT!! THROUGH ONLINE RESEARCH, THE CONTACT FOUND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS FOR THE SAME ISSUE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 55,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 57,000.

AT 49,000 MILES MY 2006 CHEVY COBALT STEERING GOES OUT INTERMITTENTLY. THE DEALER COULD NOT GET IT DO ANYTHING WRONG. NOW THAT THE WARRANTY IS OUT, IT DOES IT ABOUT ONCE A WEEK NOW. IF YOU TURN THE CAR OFF AND WAIT A FEW MINUTES, THEN TURN IT BACK ON IT WILL WORK AGAIN. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS IN THAT YOU TRY TO TURN, EXPECTING IT TO WORK AND THE CAR KEEPS STRAIGHT! THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE TECHNICIANS COULD NOT IDENTIFY THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE; THEREFORE, THEY COULD NOT PROVIDE A REMEDY. I BOUGHT A 2006 CHEVY COBALT APRIL 9,2009. AFTER ABOUT 2 WEEKS THE POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THE STEERING COLUMN IS GOING OUT AND IT WOULD COST ABOUT $900. NOW THE LIGHT COMES ON AFTER A FEW MINUTES. THE CAR WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY, BUT I THINK THEY KNEW THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG WITH IT. I HAVE CHECKED ON THE INTERNET AND A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE THE SAME COMPLAINT. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER, BUT THEY COULD NOT DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY BEING INSPECTED FOR THE FAILURE SO A REPAIR CAN BE MADE. THE CONTACT FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS INFORMED THAT A DISTRICT SPECIALIST WOULD CALL HIM ON JUNE 23, 2009. THE CONTACT HAS NOT YET RECEIVED A CALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 24,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 25,000.

WHEN THE IGNITION KEY RELEASE CONTROL BUTTON WAS PUSHED, THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO REMOVE THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION. THE FAILURE OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THERE WERE NO PRIOR WARNINGS. THE VEHICLE IS IN THE PROCESS OF BEING REPAIRED. THE CONTACT IS AWARE OF THE SAFETY RISKS INVOLVED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 56,000.
WHILE DRIVING AT 35 MPH, HEARD BEEPING AND MESSAGE ON DIC READ"POWER STEERING". PULLED TO THE SHOULDER AND RESTARTED THE CAR. NO MESSAGE WAS DISPLAYED AFTER RESTARTING THE CAR, BUT PROBLEM REMAINS. CAR WILL LOSE POWER STEERING NOW MORE FREQUENTLY, AT LEAST 5 TIMES DURING A 45 MINUTE RIDE. HAVE TO KEEP PULLING OVER TO RESTART THE CAR TO FIX THE PROBLEM. CAR IS 3 YEARS OLD WITH ABOUT 85,200. HAVE NOT REPAIRED IT YET, CAR NOT UNDER WARRANTY. *TR
OUR 2006 CHEVY COBALT HAS STARTED HAVING POWER STEERING FAILURES. THE CAR HAS 44,000 MILES. TWO WEEKS AGO WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY, THE PS LIGHT INDICATOR FLASHED ON AND WE DID OUR BEST TO TRY AND GET OFF THE ROAD. IF WE TURN THE CAR OFF AND THEN BACK ON, THE POWER STEERING WILL WORK, BUT THE PROBLEM IS BECOMING MORE FREQUENT; AT LEAST A COUPLE OF TIMES A WEEK. THIS CAR WAS BOUGHT NEW AND IS DRIVEN BY MY 20 YR. OLD HONOR COLLEGE STUDENT. I HAD A MECHANIC CHECK THIS AND HE TOLD ME THE STEERING COLUMN HAD TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF APPROX. $1500. *TR
