I WAS DRIVING MY 2007 CHEVY COBALT SS COUPE DOWN U.S. HIGHWAY 84 IN HINESVILLE, GEORGIA WHEN MY POWER STEERING SUDDENLY FAILED WITHOUT WARNING. I RECEIVED A MESSAGE ON THE HUD IN THE CAR THAT SAID POWER STEERING AND THE WHEEL IMMEDIATELY BECAME EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO TURN, REGARDLESS OF THE SPEED OF THE VEHICLE. I DROVE THE VEHICLE HOME CAREFULLY AS IT WAS WITHIN HALF A MILE OF MY RESIDENCE AND TURNED IT OFF. SEVERAL HOURS LATER I TURNED IT ON AND THE PROBLEM WAS MYSTERIOUSLY GONE. I ATTEMPTED TO DRIVE DOWN THE ROAD TO THE STORE AND THE SAME ISSUE OCCURRED AGAIN. I MADE IT BACK HOME AND HAVE YET TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE AGAIN. I CONTACTED THE CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP WHERE MY VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED AND ADVISED THEM OF THE SITUATION AND ASKED FOR AN ESTIMATED PRICE ON REPAIRS. THEY TOLD ME THEY COULD NOT GIVE ME AN ESTIMATE AND THAT ALL I COULD DO WAS HAVE MY VEHICLE TOWED TO THEIR SHOP FOR A DIAGNOSTICS SCAN. AS OF YET, I HAVE DECLINED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE IN AS I HAVE DONE RESEARCH ONLINE AND NOTICED MANY ACCOUNTS OF PEOPLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM I AM CURRENTLY HAVING. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS OF 65 MPH, HE HEARD A WARNING CHIME FOLLOWED BY THE ILLUMINATION OF THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT. THE STEERING WHEEL IMMEDIATELY BECAME DIFFICULT TO TURN. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO USE EXTREME FORCE TO MANEUVER THE VEHICLE OFF OF THE HIGHWAY. THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED WITHIN A FEW MINUTES SO THAT THE POWER STEERING COULD RESET ITSELF. ALTHOUGH THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THE FAILURE (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 10V073000: STEERING: ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM), THE DEALER STATED THAT THE PARTS NEEDED TO COMPLETE THE REPAIR WERE STILL BEING MANUFACTURED. THERE WERE NO REPAIRS MADE TO THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,150 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 50,811. UPDATED 05/11/10. *LJ
I OWN A 2007 CHEVY COBALT. IT IS 2 YEARS OLD AND AT APPROXIMATELY 58,000 MILES THE CAR'S POWER STEERING BEGAN TO INTERMITTENTLY FAIL. THE ONLY WAY TO REGAIN THE STEERING IS TO TURN THE CAR OFF AND THEN BACK ON, WHICH IS DANGEROUS IN TRAFFIC. THIS HAPPENS SOMEWHAT RANDOMLY, BUT OCCURS WITHIN A FEW MINUTES OF STARTING THE CAR 80% OF THE TIME. ON JAN 25TH THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT AS I WAS ABOUT TO MAKE A LEFT TURN AND HAVING TO OVERCOMPENSATE FOR THE HARD STEERING WHEEL ALMOST CAUSED ME TO HIT AN ONCOMING CAR. AFTER RESOLVING TO TRY AND GET THIS REPAIRED, I CHECKED INTO THE PROBLEM ONLINE AND HAVE FOUND MULTIPLE WEBSITES WITH OVER 1,000 CONSUMERS WHO COMPLAIN ABOUT POWER STEERING FAILURE ON ALL MODELS OF THE CHEVY COBALT. A REPAIR CHARGE OF $800 - $2000 IS NEEDED TO FIX THE PROBLEM WHICH IS NOT COVERED BY THE FACTORY WARRANTY, AND IN SOME CASES IS RECURRING. GM REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THIS IS A VERY FREQUENT AND DANGEROUS PROBLEM AND REFUSES TO MODIFY THEIR WARRANTY TO FIX IT. THERE IS NO INFO ON THEIR WEBSITE DESPITE THOUSANDS OF OBVIOUS COMPLAINTS AND WIDESPREAD FAILURE OF THIS PART THAT, WHEN FAILS, CREATES UNSAFE CONDITIONS FOR EVERYONE ON THE ROAD. I HAVE HEARD THAT CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS ARE IN THE WORKS, AND I AM GOING TO TRY AND START ONE MYSELF, BUT WE'D ALL REALLY LIKE TO SEE GM ACKNOWLEDGE THIS PROBLEM, MAKE AN EFFORT TO FIX THIS PLAGUE ON THEIR CUSTOMERS, AND ISSUE A RECALL. *CN

MY 2007 CHEVROLET COBALT HAS STEERING WHEEL PROBLEMS. EVERYTIME I TURN ON MY CAR POWER STEERING FLASHES ABOUT A MINUTE OR SO AFTER AND IMMEDIATELY THE WHEEL IS VERY HARD TO TURN. THIS MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO TURN IN ANY DIRECTION AND EVEN TO CHANGE LANES. IT IS SO HARD THAT I CANNOT PARK CORRECTLY AND I AM SCARED TO EVEN TRY TO PARALLEL PARK BECAUSE THE LAST TIME I TRIED I HIT ANOTHER CAR. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THIS ISSUE IS NOT BEING DEALT WITH IMMEDIATELY BECAUSE IT IS PUTTING PEOPLE IN UNBEARABLE SITUATIONS. I WAS TOLD THAT I COULD ONLY GET IT FIXED AT THE CAR DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM BUT WHAT THEY WOULD CHARGE IS BEYOND WHAT I CAN PAY. POWER STEERING 2007 CHEVY COBALT (25,000 MILES) STEERING CAR BECOMES MORE AND MORE DIFFICULT. *TR
2007 CHEVROLET COBALT - POWER STEERING FAILURE. HAPPENS MORE OFTEN WHEN WEATHER/CAR IS WARM, PARTICULARLY WHEN WEATHER IS OVER 75 OR 80. MOST OFTEN WHEN CAR IS WARM, LIKE DURING LONG TRIPS OR WHEN DRIVING MANY PLACES IN ONE DAY (ERRANDS). I HAVE HAD AS MANY AS 5 OCCURRENCES ON DAYS I AM RUNNING MANY ERRANDS. THE DASHBOARD WARNING DINGS AND POWER STEERING LIGHT COMES ON, THE POWER STEERING FAILS AND YOU CANNOT CONTROL THE VEHICLE. NORMALLY, YOU CAN STOP THE CAR, TURN OFF THE IGNITION AND RESTART THE CAR AND IT WILL WORK AGAIN FOR A WHILE. ONCE CRASHED INTO MY OWN CARPORT POLE, ONCE RAN OVER A CURB. NO ONE WAS HURT, AND THERE WAS NO SERIOUS PROPERTY DAMAGE, ONLY A BENT SUPPORT POLE ON MY OWN CARPORT, BUT I WAS LUCKY I WAS GOING EXTREMELY SLOW WHEN THIS HAPPENED. IT THIS HAPPENS AT A HIGHER SPEED, OR IN ONCOMING TRAFFIC, IT COULD CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR EVEN DEATH. I TOOK THE CAR TO A MECHANIC AND WAS TOLD THE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN/SYSTEM WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF OVER $2000. I AM UNABLE TO FIX THIS DUE TO THE HIGH COST. THIS CAR IS A 2007 WITH ONLY 38,000 MILES. SHOULD NOT HAVE MAJOR PROBLEMS LIKE THIS. *TR
I WAS DRIVING AND THE POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON, THE ALL OF A SUDDEN THE STEERING WHEEL WAS HARD TO TURN, AND I WAS UNABLE TO MAKE A RIGHT OR LEFT TURN. WHEN I DID TRY TURNING, MY CAR ALMOST HIT ANOTHER CAR THAT WAS STOPPED AT THE LIGHT BECAUSE I DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH STRENGTH TO TURN THE WHEEL ALL THE WAY. IT HAS PROGRESSIVELY GOT WORSE AND WHEN I TOOK THE CAR INTO A CHEVY SERVICE DEALER, I WAS TOLD THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE COBALT AND THEY HAD MANY OF THEM COMING IN FOR SERVICE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AND THE WHOLE SYSTEM WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THE COST I WAS QUOTED WAS $1,000.00. GMC CUSTOMER SERVICE WAS CONTACTED BY THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE MANAGER AND THE DEALERSHIP AGREED TO PAY A PERCENTAGE OF THE REPAIR COST WHICH WOULD STILL LEAVE ME PAYING $475.00. I'VE ONLY HAD THE CAR FOR 2 YEARS AND PURCHASED IT USED WITH 14,000.00 MILES. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT THIS ISSUE IS OCCURRING WHEN AND IF THE CAR HAS BEEN JUMP STARTED BECAUSE THIS IS A MAIN CAUSE OF WHICH TRIGGERS THE MAJOR SAFETY AND COSTLY ISSUE. THE FIRST QUESTION THAT I WAS ASKED OF ME IS: "HAS THE CAR BEEN JUMP STARTED WITH CABLES AT ANY GIVEN TIME?" THIS ISSUE HAS CAUSED SOME HARDSHIP IN MY FAMILY AS WELL AS TRANSPORTATION ISSUES FOR A SINGLE MOM AS MYSELF. I AM CURRENTLY UPSIDE DOWN ON THE VEHICLE BY 7 THOUSAND DOLLARS SO TRADING IT IN IS NOT AN OPTION FOR ME. I AM CURRENTLY PAYING FOR A CHEVY SILVERADO AS WELL. *TR

WHENEVER THE CONTACT DROVE THE VEHICLE VARIOUS SPEEDS INCLUDING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH SHE NOTICED THAT THE POWER STEERING LIGHT APPEARED ON THE DASHBOARD, MOMENTS LATER THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO STALL. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALER. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 46412.

I WAS DRIVING HOME AND WENT TO TAKE A RIGHT TURN WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED. IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN AND I WENT INTO THE OPPOSITE LANE. LUCKILY, THERE WERE NO CARS IN THE OTHER LANE. I MANAGED TO PULL OVER AND RESTART THE CAR. THE STEERING WORKED LONG ENOUGH TO GET ME BACK HOME. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS DEFECT AND NEEDS TO BE RECALLED. *TR
STEERING FAILURE LIGHT COMES ON. STEERING IS ERRATIC. *TR
I OWN A 2007 CHEVY COBALT LS. ON MORE THEN 10 OCCASIONS, I'VE HAD MY CAR IN REVERSE TO PULL INTO A PARKING SPOT OR OPERATING MY CAR AT LOW SPEED WHILE TRYING TO MAKE A TURN EITHER LEFT OR RIGHT. I WILL GET A MESSAGE IN THE MESSAGE CENTER THAT SAYS CHECK POWERING STEERING, AND THE POWER STEERING WILL GO OUT ON THE VEHICLE MAKING IT VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO NAVIGATE. TO TEMPORARILY CORRECT THIS PROBLEM, I MUST TURN THE CAR OFF AND RESTART IT, IT THEN OPERATES AS NORMAL. *TR

MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE A 2007 CHEVY COBALT LTZ , FOR ABOUT THREE WEEKS WE HAD BEEN NOTICING VIBRATIONS IN THE STEERING. ALSO WHEN BRAKING THE STEERING WOULD SHAKE. DURING THAT TIME WE GOT A LETTER FROM OUR DEALERSHIP ABOUT THE SIDE AIRBAGS. THEY SAID THAT THEY HAD SOLD IT AS IF IT HAD SIDE AIRBAGS,BUT IT DIDN'T HAVE ANY.ON OUR WAY UP THERE TO THE DEALERSHIP WE BEGAN TO EXPERIENCE TIGHTNESS IN THE STEERING JUST AS WE STARTED ON THE INTERSTATE . WE HAD NOT GONE VERY FAR WHEN OUR COBALT BEGAN TO FISH TAIL AND MY HUSBAND WAS UNABLE TO CONTROL THE CAR AND WE THEN WENT INTO TWO 360S AND BEGAN TO ROLL ACCORDING TO WITNESSES WE ROLLED 4 OR 5 TIMES BEFORE THE CAR RESTED ON THE RIGHT SIDE. ALSO FRONT AIRBAGS DID NOT COME OUT. IT FELT AS IF THE CAR HAD NO POWER STEERING AT ALL. *TR

THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO DRIVE PULL ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, TURN THE VEHICLE ON AND OFF SO THAT IT WOULD RESET ITSELF. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALER. THE CHEVROLET MANUFACTURER HAS NOT BEEN NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60272.
MY 16 WAS IN A HEAD ON COLLISION IN HIS 2007 CHEVY COBALT. I HAVE SINCE REALIZED THEY MAY HAVE A POWER STEERING DEFECT. THE CAR IS TOTALLED AND IS AT A COPART SALVAGE AUCTION. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF ANYTHING CAN BE DONE TO INVESTIGATE THE CAR BEFORE THE CAR IS SOLD FOR SCRAP. *CN
WE BOUGHT OUR 19 YR. OLD DAUGHTER A 2007 COBALT LAST YEAR. SHE WAS ON HER WAY BACK TO COLLEGE ON INTERSTATE AND HER POWER STEERING WENT OUT. THE CAR HAS ONLY 43,000 MILES ON IT AND WE STILL OWE 4 YRS ON IT. I WAS APPALLED AT HOW MANY COMPLAINTS THERE WERE ABOUT THIS SAME PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET. SHE WAS SCARED AND CRYING. SHE WAS 4 HRS AWAY FROM US. THIS WAS FEBRUARY 14TH 2010. SHE COULD OF BEEN KILLED OR IN A WREAK. WHY HAS GM NOT DONE A RECALL ON THESE CARS? THE WARRANTY HAS RUN OUT, SO THIS WILL BE OUT OF POCKET FOR US. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM. I AM AFRAID FOR HER TO EVEN DRIVE THIS CAR NOW.SHOULD I TELL HER NOT TO COME HOME ANY MORE UNTIL SOMEBODY DOES SOMETHING ABOUT THIS. YOU CAN'T IGNORE THIS. EVERYTHING WAS WORKING FINE IN MY 2007 CHEVY COBALT UNTIL IT GOT TO ABOUT 70,000 MILES AND THEN WHILE I DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD THE POWER STEERING SHUT OFF. THIS HAS CONTINUALLY OCCURRED EVERY TIME THAT I DRIVE AND IT HAPPENS AT RANDOM TIMES. IT'S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE IT HAPPENS AT A BAD TIME AND SOME ONE GETS HURT. I'VE TAKEN IT TO A FEW MECHANICS WHO HAVE SAID THEY HAVE ENCOUNTERED AT LEAST A DOZEN OTHER PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THEIR COBALT. THEY THEN TELL ME TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHO SAID THAT THE TOTAL COST WOULD BE ABOUT $900. THAT'S RIDICULOUS I WONT PAY THAT MUCH MONEY FOR SOMETHING SO STUPID. GM NEEDS TO GET THEIR ACT TOGETHER BEFORE SOMEONE GETS SERIOUSLY INJURED FROM THEIR CRAPPY MADE CARS. *TR
WE LIVE IN LUMBERTON TEXAS AND WE HAD TO GO TO SHREVEPORT,LA TO TAKE A FRIEND OF MINE TO THE DENTIST. ON THE WAY HOME WHILE WE WERE IN TOWN THE POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON AND MY HUSBAND HAD TROUBLE STEERING IT AROUND CURVES AND TURNS. NOT KNOWING THAT IT WAS AN ELECTRIC POWER STEERING, HE PULLED INTO THE STORE TO GET POWER STEERING FLUID. HE COULDN'T FIND THE PLACE TO PUT IT SO I LOOKED AT THE BOOK THAT CAME WITH THE CAR AND FOUND OUT. WELL WHEN WE GOT BACK IN THE CAR TO LEAVE IT WAS FINE AT FIRST, THEN IT STARTED IT AGAIN AND ALL THE WAY HOME. WE HAVE NOTICED THAT WHEN YOU TURN THE CAR OFF FOR A WHILE AND START IT BACK IT DOES OK FOR A LITTLE WHILE. WE HAVE PROBLEMS WITH IT EVERYDAY. ONCE THE POWER STEERING ACTS UP IT STAYS THAT WAY UNTIL YOU TURN THE CAR OFF AND LET IT COOL OFF BUT AFTER YOUR DRIVING IT AGAIN ITS STARTS ALL OVER. WE HAVE NOT HAD AN ACCIDENT YET AND HOPEFULLY WE DON'T. IT IS VERY HARD FOR ME TO DRIVE IT BUT I HAVE TO USE IT SOMETIME TO GO PLACES.WE HAVE NOT HAD IT FIXED YET AND WERE TOLD IT COULD COST ALOT TO GET IT FIXED. WE DON'T HAVE THE MONEY NOW TO GET IT FIXED. ANOTHER COMPLAINT IS WELL ACTUALLY WAS THE GEAR SHIFT. IT WOULD NOT GO ALL THE WAY INTO PARK, I GUESS, AND YOU COULDN'T GET YOUR KEYS OUT OF THE IGNITION. WE HAVE ALREADY HAD THAT FIXED THOUGH. THERE ARE OTHER COMPLAINTS I HAVE BUT PROBABLY NOTHING THAT WOULD BE COVER UNDER SAFETY ISSUES. THIS CAR IS A LEMON IN MY BOOK. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS DAMAGED; HOWEVER, THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER DOES NOT WANT TO DIAGNOSE THE VEHICLE SINCE THEY DO NOT THINK THAT THE STEERING WAS RELATED TO THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT CALLED GM AND WAS ADVISED THAT SOMEONE WOULD RETURN HER CALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 29,800.
I WAS DRIVING HOME DOING APPROXIMATELY 45 MILES PER HOUR WHEN MY POWER STEERING FAILED TO OPERATE. IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER THE CAR OFF THE HIGHWAY TO GET TO SAFETY. AFTER I SHUT THE CAR OFF AND RESTARTED IT THE POWER STEERING RESET ITSELF AND IT WAS FINE TO DRIVE. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST 4 TIMES IN THE LAST 3 WEEKS. I TOOK IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY HAVE INFORMED ME THAT THE POWER STEERING MOTOR NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF OVER $1,000. *TR

I DRIVE A 2007 CHEVY COBALT WITH DEFECTIVE STEEL WHEELS. HAVE HAD GM DEALER SEND PHOTOS TO GM REP IN THE AREA, DENIES MY CLAIM ON MY DEFECTIVE STEEL FACTORY 15INCH WHEELS. THERE ARE CRACKS THAT START IN THE CENTER OF THE WHEEL THEN THEY TRAVEL RIGHT TO THE CIRCLES IN THE WHEEL. *TR

IT BECOMES HARD TO CORRECT UNTIL THE STEERING WHEEL IS TURNED ABOUT 1 TURN BACK TOWARDS CENTER. IT ALMOST FEELS LIKE THE WHEELS ARE GOING PAST CENTER AND THAT IS WHY IT IS HARD TO CORRECT. IT IS IN THE DEALER FOR THIS PROBLEM. *TR

I CONTACTED GM'S CUSTOMER SERVICE TO CHECK ON ANY SERVICE RECALLS AND A WARRANTY EXTENSION. SINCE THE ISSUE WAS BECOMING VERY DANGEROUS, I HAD TO GET THE VEHICLE FIXED IMMEDIATELY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN INTO THE DEALERSHIP. I WAS TOLD IT WAS NOT COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY BECAUSE THE MILEAGE ON MY VEHICLE WAS AT 39,000. THE BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY IS 3 YRS, 36,000 MILES.
