2015 Chevrolet Equinox Air Bags & Restraints Problems

The ref air bag sensor appeared in my 2015 Chevy Equinox today. My vehicle has not been in a car accident as of today 1/24/26. None of my airbags have been deployed at all. I would like to report this defect and I would like Viva Chevrolet in El Paso Texas to be notified since that is the dealership where I purchased based my vehicle. Thank you. Hello, on September 5, 2025 I was driving my 2015 Chevy equinox. I was in a collision while driving my 2015 equinox going at a speed of 60 mph on a highway. On the day of the collision i hit a cargo truck that was carrying vehicles an it completely destroyed the front of my 2015 chevy equinox despite the severity of the impact. None of the airbags deployed. Fortunately me and my daughter did not sustain any injuries but I agree strongly that air bags should have deployed by the severity and location of the impact. This could have been more dangerous if someone else had been in the vehicle or if the wreck was slightly worse. My vehicle was viewed by the police at scene but no one else. There was no warning lights or messages prior to the accident. I am submitting this report because I believe the airbag system may have failed and I wanna make sure this is investigated I still have the vehicle and can provide photos and further details if needed.

There is a warning to service airbag. I took to dealership there is a recall on thus issue for certain vins, but not mine. They said my sensor under passenger seat is defective and would cost $1800+ to fix. I don't understand if this is a known issue and recall for some vehicles...why not mine?

Oil consumption issues, engine failure, does not indicate oil low light when oil is low, catalytic converter failure

Car received a front impact and airbags did not deploy despite the alert on the dash saying “service airbags” immediately after collision. Seat belts engaged though.

Drivers seat back rest air bag randomly deployed when I was in park, in my driveway taking my seat belt. Bruised my arm/ side of body pretty good. I had no idea how that could happen however, I connected my scanner tool to the car and come to find out I had 7 air bag/srs codes. After that happened all of my seat belts locked up, and per the scanner, it says a few other air bags have deployed but they haven't. This happened a while ago, (wife's car) and I haven't had time to reach out about it. I still drive it just to work and back but I disconnected the srs module in fear of the air bags the scanner tool said deployed WILL deploy while I'm driving. No previous codes or air bag light were shown before that occurred along with no previous repairs or modifications at the time were done besides regular maintenence. Hasn't been inspected but the light is still on, they're hard codes that can't be cleared, and the deployed air bag/seat back cover is still present.

When starting my vehicle I get a message on the dash that service is needed for the airbag. I took my vehicle to a chevy dealer and a diagnostic test was performed. I have not had the work done at this time. However I know it is needed and in the process of scheduling an appointment. I have always owned Chevy's and have never had a problem with the airbags. I know this is a safety issue and should be a concern for the company. I truly think this should be on the recall list. The contact stated while attempting to pull the front driver’s side seat belt to fasten the seat belt, the seat belt seized not allowing the seat belt to retract. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the dealer stated that the seat belt needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 55,000.

The service airbag sensor is constantly going off. It scares me, I am afraid it will explode

The contact owned a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while driving at 45 mph, another vehicle in front of the contact's made a left turn but the contact was not able to brake in time and rear-ended the other vehicle. No air bags were deployed. The contact was transported by ambulance for a compression fracture on her vertebrae. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard and deemed totaled by the insurance company. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 85,000.

ON DEC 31, 2020 I STRUCK A DEER ON A COUNTY RD GOING APPROX 45MPH. THE IMPACT WAS SO HARD THE DRIVE TRAIN WAS SHOVED INTO THE CAR AND THE RADIATOR EXPLODED AND THE ENTIRE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE WAS DESTROYED. NEITHER PASS. NOR DRIVERS SIDE DOORS WOULD OPEN. THE CAR IS A TOTAL LOSS YET THE AIRBAGS NEVER DEPLOYED THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE VEHICLE BUT YOU COULD SEE A WHITE POWDERY SMOKE AND IT SMELL AS IF THEY DID AND THE CAR NOW SAYS SERVICE AIRBAGS. ALSO THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE SEAT BELT NEVER RETRACTED BACK AND MY DAUGHTER AND I WERE BOTH INJURED AS I WAS SLAMMED INTO THE STEERING WHEEL SUFFERING DAMAGE TO MY CHEST AND FACE AND HER HEAD/ FACE BOUNCED OFF THE DASH DUE TO THE AIR BAGS NOT DEPLOYING AND THE SEATBELTS NOT WORKING. WE ARE LUCKY WE WEREN'T KILLED AS THE ENTIRE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE, ENGINE INCLUDED WAS PUSHED TO THE INSIDE OF THE CAR. WE WERE GOING TO LOOK INTO GETTING US ANOTHER EQUINOX AS I HAD JUST HAD THIS ONE FOR ABOUT SEVEN MONTHS BUT I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT BUT AFTER READING ALL THESE REPORTS THAT ARE IDENTICAL TO OURS AS FAR AS SEATBELTS AND AIRBAGS GO AND REALIZING THIS IS A VERY COMMON THING WITH 2015 EQUINOX AND AFTER THIS HAPPENING TO US IT'S OBVIOUS THIS VEHICLE IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE OR AT LEAST NOT SAFE TO GET INTO AN ACCIDENT WITH AND IT SOUNDS LIKE THERE NEEDS TO BE A RECALL BUT YET THAT HASN'T HAPPENED. I HAVE READ HUNDREDS OF REPORTS EXACTLY LIKE THIS ONE. I'M VERY DISAPPOINTED IN CHEVY FOR LETTING THIS CONTINUALLY HAPPEN WITH NO RECALL OR WARNING TO YOUR CUSTOMERS. . A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED ON THIS AND INJURIES DID OCCUR. THE POLICE OFFICER AND THE WRECKER DRIVER SAID THEY'VE NEVER SEEN A DEER DO SO MUCH DAMAGE TO A VEHICLE BEFORE AND THE OFFICER COULD NOT BELIEVE THAT THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY ON US AND SAID THAT WE MOST DEFINITELY NEED TO CHECK INTO IT BECAUSE HE WOULD ASSUME THAT THEY WERE RECALLED BUT HERE WE ARE AND THEY'RE NOT.

WE HIT A DEER GOING 70 MPH LAST NIGHT ON INTERSTATE 10 HEADED WESTBOUND , UPON IMPACT THE AIRBAGS DID NOT GO OFF. WE SMELLED SOMETHING THAT SMELLED LIKE IT WAS BURNING, IT WAS THE IGNITER TO THE AIRBAGS. NOW THE CAR IS GIVING US A SERVICE AIRBAG MESSAGE ON THE SCREEN. OUR AIRBAGS ALL FAILED TO DEPLOY.

MY PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG WILL GO OFF SAYING IT IS NOT WORKING EVEN WHEN PEOPLE ARE SITTING IN IT. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD AND SHOULD BE A COVERED COST AT GM SHOULD REPAIR AND NOT THE CONSUMER

AIR BAG SERVICE

I WAS DRIVING HOME AND DROVE OVER A POT HOLE IN THE ROAD WHEN I WAS TURNING AT INTERSECTION, THEN APPROXIMATELY 3-5 SECONDS AFTER CURTAIN AIR BAGS DEPLOYED AS WELL AS THE ONE FROM STEERING WHEEL. THE STEERING WHEEL AIR BAG DID NOT FULLY INFLATE DUE TO METAL FRAGMENTS THAT WERE SHOT OUT CAUSING A PUNCTURE TO THE AIR BAG AND THOSE FRAGMENTS CAUSED PUNCTURE WOUNDS TO MY ARM, AND CRACKED THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR WINDOW. I WAS NOT IN A COLLISION AT THAT TIME. I HAVE THE REPORT FROM MY INSURANCE WHERE IT STATES THIS CAR HAD A RECALL FOR AIR BAG ISSUES ONE BEING THAT OBJECTS MAY CAUSE INJURY AND OR DEATH FROM SHOOTING OUT. I HAD TAKEN MY VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP IN JUNE DUE TO THE STABILITIES AND SERVICE AIR BAGS LIGHT WAS ON. THIS WAS NOT DISCLOSED TO ME AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE AND ANY OTHER TIME I TOOK IT IN FOR SERVICES. AFTER INVESTIGATION THRU MY INSURANCE IT WAS DECLARED A TOTAL LOSS. I HAVE TRIED REPEATEDLY AND UNSUCCESSFULLY, TO REACH OUT TO MANAGEMENT FOR OVER A MONTH NOW AND THEY SEEM TO NOT WANT TO HELP. I HAVE PHOTOS TO SHOW CONDITION OF THE VEHICLE, THE 23 PAGE REPORT FROM MY INSURANCE AS WELL AS MY INJURIES. I PUT $5000 DOWN , INCLUDED IN THAT WAS A TRADE IN. NOW IM LEFT WITHOUT A CAR AND DEALING WITH A DEALERSHIP THAT SEEMS NOT TO CARE. ON THE 23RD PAGE IS WHERE IT STATES THIS VEHICLE MAY BE ONE OF THE AFFECTED ONES.
