IN A PARKING GARAGE ON THE 4TH FLOOR. BACKING OUT OF SPACE. WHILE BACKING UP, I HEAR A LOUD BOOM. NOTHING BEHIND ME. THOUGHT PERHAPS A TIRE FAILURE. PUT VEHICLE IN DRIVE TO PULL FORWARD OUT OF TRAFFIC LANE, AND THE ENGINE ACCELERATED UNCONTROLLABLY. BRAKES WOULDN'T RESPOND. BY THE GRACE OF G-D OR REFLEXES, I TURNED THE WHEEL TO THE RIGHT TO AVOID FLYING THROUGH THE GUARDRAIL AND OFF THE 4TH STORY OF THE PARKING GARAGE. VEHICLE CAME TO A HALT WHEN IT SMASHED INTO A CONCRETE SUPPORT PILLAR. BOTH AIR BAGS DETONATED, PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG APPARENTLY BROKE THE WINDSHIELD ON THAT SIDE. ENGINE SHUT OFF. LIGHTS IN PASSENGER COMPARTMENT TURNED ON, HAZARDS STARTED FLASHING ON/OFF (COULDN'T TURN THEM OFF). WAITED FOR TOW TRUCK FOR 5 HOURS. TOW DRIVERS HAD TO JUMP BATTERY - COULDN'T GET FRONT HOOD OPEN, BACK DOOR ELECTRONIC LOCK NON-FUNCTIONAL DUE TO DEAD BATTERY. TOW DRIVER CLIMBED INSIDE CAR, REMOVED INSIDE DECKING TO ACCESS BATTERY. TOW DRIVER JUMPED BATTERY, ATTEMPTED START. FIRST TWO OR THREE TIMES, IT WOULDN'T START, EVENTUALLY ON THE 4TH OR 5TH TIME IT STARTED BUT THE ENGINE WAS RACING AGAIN. TOW DRIVER PUT CAR IN REVERSE AND IT FLEW BACKWARD (I THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO GO OFF THE DECK OF THE GARAGE BACKWARDS...). HE STOPPED THE VEHICLE, TURNED THE WHEEL AND HEADED FORWARD - IT SHOT DOWN THE RAMP UNTIL THEY GOT IT OUT OF THE GARAGE AND ON THE TRUCK (I WAS OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE WATCHING FROM A SAFE DISTANCE WHILE HE DID THIS). VEHICLE TOTALED. NOT SURE WHAT THE PROBLEM IS/WAS, BUT I'M LUCKY TO BE ALIVE. HAVE HEARD OF ISSUES INVOLVING STUCK IDLE SOLENOIDS, DRIVE TRAIN PROBLEMS, ETC.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 CHEVROLET HHR. WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH, A LOUD NOISE WAS HEARD AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO DECELERATE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE NOISE THAT WAS HEARD WAS A CV DRIVESHAFT LOCATED ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE. THE MANUFACTURER OF THE PART WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 110,000.
THIS VEHICLES SAFETY CHIMES CAN SHUT OFF CAUSING OWNER TO BE LOCKED OUT OF THE VEHICLE WITH KEYS STILL IN IGNITION. THIS OCCURS WHEN PARKED AND TURNED OFF OR WHEN PARKED AND ENGINE RUNNING. SMALL OCCUPANTS AS INFANTS CHILDREN AND PETS COULD BE TRAPPED IN A FREEZING OR HOT CAR. THIS VEHICLE HAS NO INTERIOR HATCHBACK DOOR OPENER AND CAN ESSENTIALLY PIN OCCUPANTS IN A ACCIDENT INTO THE VEHICLE IF FORWARD DOORS ARE DAMAGED DURING ACCIDENT. THE ONLY ESCAPE COMES FROM REMOVING PLASTIC HOUSING AND USING A SCREWDRIVER TO A HIDDEN LATCH INSIDE THE DOOR HOUSING.
THE SERVICE AIR BAG LIGHT KEPT APPEARING. IT WOULD BE ON FOR A FEW DAYS, THEN GO OFF AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD APPEAR. THE LIGHT DESIGNATING SEAT BELT USE FOR THE PASSENGER WOULD NOT ISSUE A WARNING SOUND AND SOMETIMES WOULD NOT COME ON EVEN IF SOMEONE WAS SITTING IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. THIS HAPPENS AT ANY TIME WHEN THE CAR IS TURNED ON. THIS HAS BEEN VERIFIED BY A CHEVY DEALER, BUT THEY SAY SINCE MY CAR IS NOT ONE OF THE VINS BEING RECALLED FOR THIS PROBLEM THAT I WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR IT. THEY HAVE OFFERED ME A RECONCILIATION DEAL FOR A LESSER DOLLAR AMOUNT.
SHORTLY BEFORE CHRISTMAS (2015) WE BAGAN TO SMELL FUEL FROM THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE OF OUR 2010 HHR. THERE DID NOT APPEAR TO BE ANY LEAKING GAS; HOWEVER, WE TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER FOR PROPER DIAGNOSIS. THE DEALER DETERMINED THE FUEL LINES HAD RUSTED THROUGH. WHEN WE TOOK THE CAR HOME TO DECIDE OUR NEXT ACTION, WE DISCOVERED IT WAS NOW LEAKING A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF FUEL, AND PROMPTLY BROUGHT THE VEHICLE BACK FOR FULL REPAIR. THE CAR WAS 5 YEARS OLD. EVERYONE I HAVE SPOKEN WITH SINCE HAS NEVER HEARD OF RUSTED FUEL LINES ON A 5 YEAR OLD VEHICLE. I WROTE GM'S EXECUTIVE OFFICE, AND THEY SIMPLY STATED THAT IT WAS DUE TO ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS. I LIVE IN FLORIDA, BUT DO NOT LIVE DIRECTLY ON OR NEAR THE OCEAN. I ALSO DO NOT PARK THE CAR AT OR NEAR THE OCEAN ON ANY KIND OF REGULAR BASIS. THIS CAR ALSO NEVER DRIVES IN SNOW. IF ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS CAUSED THE FUEL LINES TO GO BAD, EVERY CAR IN FLORIDA WOULD HAVE THEIR FUEL LINES REPLACED EVERY FIVE YEARS, AND THIS IS SIMPLY NOT THE CASE. THE DISTINCTION IS THAT FUEL LINES DO NOT RUST THROUGH ON VEHICLES OF THIS AGE. THERE ARE NUMEROUS MODEL YEARS OF THE HHR REPORTING THE EXACT SAME ISSUE IN NUMEROUS STATES ALL OVER THE USA; THUS, THIS IS NOT A LOCALIZED ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE. FAULTY DESIGN AND/OR MATERIALS IS CAUSING THESE FUEL LINES TO PREMATURELY RUST OUT AT THE JOINTS. ALMOST ALL OF THE REPORTS OF THIS ISSUE OCCUR BEFORE FIVE YEARS OF AGE FOR THE VEHICLE. IF CORVETTE'S WERE HAVING THEIR FUEL LINES RUST OUT WITHIN 5 YEARS, THERE WOULD BE A RECALL; HOWEVER, AS THE HHR IS DISCONTINUED, NOTHING HAS BEEN INVESTED INTO RESEARCHING THIS INHERENT VICE. BY THE TIME WE ACTUALLY HAD THE REPAIR DONE ON OUR HHR, IT WAS ACTUALLY LEAKING A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF GAS, AND IT EASILY COULD HAVE IGNITED AND KILLED OUR FAMILY. APPARENTLY SOMEONE HAS TO DIE, FOR A RECALL TO BE ISSUED.

WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED, THE PEDAL PULSATED AND THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO OPERATE THE VEHICLE WITH THE POWER STEERING AFTER SWITCHING TO A DIFFERENT KEY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS MADE AWARE OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V153000 (STEERING), BUT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 85,000.
DOOR HANDLES BREAK EASILY AND HAVE BEEN REPLACED ONCE EACH AND DRIVERS HAS BEEN REPLACED TWICE. ALSO OPENING REAR DOORS FROM OUTSIDE OF THE CAR, THE PASSENGER REAR DOOR DOES NOT LOCK ANY LONGER AND YOU CAN NOT GET OUT THE DOOR WITHOUT FIGHTING WITH THE LOCK ON REAR PASSENGER SIDE. THE REAR DRIVERS SIDE YOU HAVE TO JERK THE DOOR FORWARD AND SOMETIMES IT WILL OPEN FROM THE OUTSIDE. YOU CANNOT OPEN IT FROM INSIDE.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED BUT THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE RECURRED SEVERAL TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V153000 (STEERING). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 150,000.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 CHEVROLET HHR. WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED, THERE WAS AN ABNORMAL VIBRATION AT THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THE FRONT DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE LOWER CONTROL ARMS RUBBER BUSHING WERE WORN AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE DOOR HANDLE FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURES RECURRED TWICE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 85,000.
ESC ACTIVATION LIGHT COMES ON, CAR VIBRATES BADLY AND HARD TO STEER. HAPPENS MAINLY ON DRY ROADS, AT TIMES GOING AROUND A BEND IN THE ROAD. IT IS SPERATIC, BUT LAST WEEK HAPPENED ALMOST EVERYDAY. ITS BEEN AT THE DEALER 6 TIMES TO TRY TO FIX, BUT TO NO AVAIL.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 80 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME DIFFICULT TO TURN AFTER THE POWER STEERING WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED , HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE FAILURE RECURRED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V153000 (STEERING). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 134,000.
POWER STEERING QUIT WORKING 2 TIMES WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE IN 2 DAYS. ONCE WHILE TURNING AND ONCE WHILE DRIVING STRAIGHT DOWN ROAD. STOPPING AND RESTARTING CAR CAUSED IT START WORKING AGAIN. AFTER THE SECOND TIME I TOOK THE CAR IN TO DEALER WHO STATED POWER STEERING MOTOR WAS BAD AND NEEDED REPLACING. BOTH TIMES WERE DRIVING AT UNDER 40MPH. CHEVROLET CLAIMED THIS WAS NOT COVERED UNDER CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V153000. NEITHER TIME RESULTED IN A WRECK OR DAMAGE, JUST A FEW MISSING HEART BEATS.

POWER STEERING NON OPERATIVE, WENT OUT WHILE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION ON A CITY STREET. TURN THE CAR OFF AND THE POWER STEERING WORKS FOR A SHORT WHILE BUT SOON GOES OUT AGAIN WHILE IN TRAFFIC.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE CONNECTOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 45,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE STEERING GEAR BOX AND RACK AND PINION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000.
WHILE EXITING ONTO THE FREEWAY AT 45 MPH THE POWER STEERING LIGHT WENT ON AND THE STEERING DIDN'T WORK. I REALIZED THE IT WAS DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER THE STEERING WHEEL AND CAR AND GOT OFF ON THE FIRST EXIT WHICH WAS 2 MILES AWAY. I TRIED NOT TO PANIC AS I HAD MY KIDS IN THE CAR. I THEN WENT TO THE NEAREST GAS STATION. TURNED OFF THE CAR TO CAL MY HUSBAND. AND WHEN I TESTED THE CAR TO TURN IT BACK ON THE POWER STEERING LIGHT WAS OFF AND THEN THE STEERING WHEEL WAS NORMAL. I DECIDED I NEEDED TO TRY AND GET HOME, WE WERE 45 MINUTES AWAY FROM HOME. AS I DROVE THE CAR AGAIN AT A STEADY SPEED I STAYED ON THE SLOWEST LANE AND WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AGAIN THE POWER STEERING STOPPED WORKING AT 65 MPH. SINCE THEN IT STILL HAPPENS ONCE WE DRIVE IT. I HAVE A VIDEO OF WHEN IT GOES ON. I SAFELY RECORDED THE MALFUNCTION. THIS IS OUR ONLY TRANSPORTATION AND WE JUST BOUGHT IT FROM CARMAX IN MAY.
MY HHR IS HAVING REPEATED ISSUES WITH THE SENSORS. I HAVE ALREADY PAID TO HAVE SENSORS REPLACED AND I WILL NO LONGER DO SO. THE HHR IS ONE OF THE MOST COSTLY VEHICLES I'VE OWNED.
IN THE AFTERNOON ON THURSDAY 7/9/15, I HEARD A DING IN THE VEHICLE (WARNING SOUND) AND THE WORDS "POWER STEERING" APPEARED ON THE DASH PANEL UNDER THE SPEEDOMETER. ALL LOSS OF STEERING ASSIST WAS LOST AND MANUAL STEERING WAS THE ONLY WAY TO STEER THE VEHICLE. AFTER TURNING THE VEHICLE OFF/ON, THE POWER STEERING WORKED AGAIN AND THEN AFTER A FEW MINUTES THE SAME ISSUE OCCURED. I PARKED THE VEHICLE AND DID NOT DRIVE IT UNTIL THE NEXT DAY. I SEARCHED FOR RECALLS AS WELL AS CONTACTED THE LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALER TO DISCUSS THE ISSUE AND IF THERE WERE ANY RECALLS. I WAS TOLD THERE IS A RECALL FOR POWER STEERING ON SOME 2010 CHEV HHR MODELS BUT MY VIN HAS NOT BEEN IDENTIFIED. THE NEXT DAY I AVOIDED DRIVING THE VEHICLE WHEN POSSIBLE DUE TO SAFETY CONCERNS AND THE INABILITY TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE DEALERSHIP FOR DIAGNOSIS. I DID DRIVE THE VEHICLE ONCE AND THE SAME THING DESCRIBED ABOVE HAPPENED THREE TIMES BEFORE I COULD GET BACK HOME. AT THIS POINT I DID NOT WANT TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE AT ALL UNTIL THE PROBLEM HAD BEEN FIXED. I SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE LOCAL CHEV DEALER AFTER A CANCELLATION OCCURRED AND THE POWER STEERING MOTOR WAS REPLACED ON 7/11/15. I HAVE CONTACTED GM ABOUT THIS AND HAVE BEEN ADVISED THE VEHICLE WAS NOT UNDER RECALL. WHILE I UNDERSTAND THE VEHICLE WAS NOT UNDER AN OFFICIAL RECALL, THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM HAPPENED IN THE SAME EXACT WAY DESCRIBED ON THE GM WEBSITE AND A RESULT OF THAT POWER STEERING RECALL IS TO REPLACE THE POWER STEERING MOTOR. I HAVE REQUESTED REIMBURSEMENT BUT HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY INFORMATION ABOUT THIS AT THIS TIME. ONE REPRESENTATIVE ADVISED IT WAS HIGHLY UNLIKELY. I WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT WHY THE VEHICLE WAS NOT IDENTIFIED UNDER ANY RECALL AND WHEN A VEHICLE IS NOT UNDER RECALL BUT HAS AN ISSUE THAT HAS BEEN RECALLED IF THEY'RE ANY STEPS THAT CAN BE TAKEN TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE. THIS WAS A CLEAR HAZARD.

THE FIRST TIME THIS OCCURRED, WE WERE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND COULD BARELY PULL OVER. WE RESTARTED THE CAR AND IT DID NOT OCCUR AGAIN FOR 6 DAYS BUT NOW, EVEN TURNING OFF THE CAR AND RESTARTING ONLY HELPS FOR A FEW MINUTES. THE CAR IS VERY HARD TO STEER THIS WAY. WE ARE TOLD THAT OUR HHR IS NOT ONE OF THE ONES INCLUDED IN THE RECALL, YET THE PROBLEM IS THE SAME AS THOSE RECALLED. IT SEEMS THAT THE RECALL SHOULD BE EXPANDED.
EXPERIENCED LOSS OF POWER STEERING ASSIST AND A MESSAGE DISPLAYED ON THE DRIVER INFORMATION CENTER WITH A CHIME SOUNDS. VEHICLE REVERTED TO MANUAL STEERING, BUT GREATER DRIVER EFFORT WAS REQUIRED AS I HAD TO TURN SO I WOULD NOT HIT OTHER VEHICLES. SAME ISSUE AS IN RECALL BULLETIN # BULLETIN 14115. AFTER FINDING OUT ON GOOGLE THAT CARS LIKE MINE HAD BEEN RECALLED I CALLED MY CHEVY DEALER AND THEY SAID THAT MY CAR DID NOT QUALIFY FOR FREE REPAIR, EVEN THOUGH OF CORRECT MAKE AND YEAR. THEY DID NOT SEEM TO CARE AT ALL THAT I WAS STRANDED AND WOULD NOT GIVE ME AN APPOINTMENT UNTIL 3 DAYS LATER, BUT TOLD ME TO CALL GM AS THEY DID NOT SEEM TO WANT TO DEAL WITH ME. I TOOK MY CAR TO A REGULAR GARAGE, DRIVING IT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT SO THERE WOULD BE LESS TRAFFIC AND LESS RISK OF A CRASH AND THEY COULD NOT REPAIR IT AS THEY NEEDED THE GM SOFTWARE IN ORDER FOR THEM TO DO THAT, BUT THEY DID TELL ME THAT IT WAS THE SAME ISSUE AS THE ONES THAT WERE BEING RECALLED. NOW I WILL HAVE TO MISS MORE WORK AND TRY TO BEG TO GET AN APPOINTMENT AND SPEND A FORTUNE ON HAVING SOMETHING FIXED THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN TAKEN CARE OF AS PART OF THE RECALL. I AM A SINGLE MOTHER DURING THE WEEK, AND HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE, I AM AFRAID. I HAVE ALWAYS DRIVEN CHEVROLET VEHICLES BUT THAT IS IT FOR ME, I WILL NEVER BUY A GM AGAIN. STEERING WHEEL IS LOCKING IN PLACE AS IT SHOULD WHEN YOU PARK, TURN THE CAR OFF AND REMOVE THE KEY, BUT THEN THE STEERING REMAINS LOCKED WHEN YOU INSERT THE KEY AND ATTEMPT TO RESTART THE CAR. THE WHEELS ARE NOT IN A TURNED POSITION AND THE STEERING WHEEL IS IN IT'S APPROPRIATE POSITION. IT TAKES WIGGLING THE STEERING WHEEL AS MUCH AS YOU CAN UNTIL THE KEY CATCHES TO GET IT TO START. THE KEY WILL COMPLETELY TURN TO THE "ON" POSITION, BUT IF THAT STEERING WHEEL IS LOCKED THERE IS NO CONNECTION AND THE STEERING MUST BE WIGGLED UNTIL THE KEY ENGAGES. ALSO, THE STEERING DOES NOT RESPOND AS WELL AS IT DID BEFORE THE 1ST RECALL FOR THE IGNITION SWITCH. IT FEELS AS IF THE WHEELS ARE NOT RESPONDING APPROPRIATELY WHEN I AM DRIVING. IT'S HARDER TO MAINTAIN CONTROL AND STAY IN MY LANE. I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE RECALL ON THE STEERING THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY PERFORMED BUT IT IS BECOMING PROGRESSIVELY WORSE.

DID RESEARCH ON NET AND FOUND THAT THE HHR (& SEVERAL OTHER GM MODELS) HAD ELECTRIC MOTOR ASSIST FOR STEERING, AND GM HAD ISSUED A RECALL IN EARLY 2014 FOR THIS PROBLEM; COVERED WIDE VARIETY OF MODELS & YEARS, INCLUDING "SOME" 2010 HHR'S. CONTACTED DEALER, SAID BRING THE VEHICLE IN. STARTED VEHICLE, MESSAGE WAS GONE, POWER STEERING WORKED, BUT DROVE THE VEHICLE TO DEALER ANYWAY. SERVICE WRITER WAS UNAWARE OF ANY RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE. I WAS GOING 25 MPH WHEN I CRASHED CAUSING OVER 5,000 DOLLARS WORTH OF AUTO AND PROPERTY DAMAGE IN ADDITION TO THE MEDICAL BILLS WHICH I HAVE NOT RECEIVED IN FULL YET. THE CAR MALFUNCTIONED WHILE I WAS DRIVING AND I WAS NOT ABLE TO CONTROL IT. I RECEIVED THE RECALL INFORMATION IN THE MAIL, BUT THE CAR HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. ALSO, THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY WHEN THE CRASH HAPPENED. I SUFFERED A CONCUSSION DUE TO THE ACCIDENT. I WAS THE ONLY PERSON INJURED. *JS
