AS I WAS MAKING A TURN AFTER A STOP (WHICH FELT SOMEWHAT SLUGGISH OF A STOP) I WENT TO TAP THE BRAKES AND EXPERIENCED COMPLETE LOSS OF BRAKES. I WAS ON A DESCENT AND IMMEDIATELY THREW THE TRUCK INTO PARK TO CUT THE POWER TO WHEELS AND PRESSED EMERGENCY BRAKE WHICH WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR AND I HAD A SPLIT SECOND TO DECIDE WHAT TO DO AS THE ROAD WAS CAUSING RAPID ACCELERATION. I SAW ONE CHANCE TO DRIVE OVER A DITCH AND INTO A YARD BY A HOUSE. I DID SO, FLYING OVER THE DITCH. IT TOOK THE LENGTH OF THE ENTIRE YARD (ABOUT AN ACRE OF PROPERTY) FOR THE TRUCK TO EVENTUALLY STOP ON ITS OWN. I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED WHERE UPON QUICK ASSESSMENT MECHANIC SAID I HAD CORRODED BRAKE LINES AND RUPTURED BRAKE HOSE. THIS MOST CERTAINLY COYLD HAVE REAULTED IN A FATAL ACCIDENT AS THE END OF THIS ROAD IS FULL OF HOUSES AND SHARP BEND WITH MULTIPLE TELEPHONE POLES. I AM STILL AWAITING FULL REPORT ON VEHICLE BUT AM VERY UPSET GM HAS NEVER EVER ADVISED ME OF THIS KNOWN ISSUE. I MAINTAINED VEHICLE AT GM DEALER AND AM SINGLE OWNER. NEVER ONCE WAS I NOTIFIED. MY VEHICLE HAS A LITTLE OVER 100,300 MILES ON IT AND I WAS JUST STARTING DOWN THE HILL, ABOUT 10MPH BUT RAPIDLY THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED WITHIN SPAN OF 2 HOUSES...RESULTING IN THE CRASH AND LOSS OF VEHICLE USE DUE TO NEED FOR TOWING. HAVE NO IDEA OFBSPEED AT THE DITCH AS I WASN'T ABLE TO LOOK DOWN .
WAS LEAVING DRIVEWAY. PUT FOOT ON BRAKE PEDAL WAS HARD RELEASED AND REAPPLIED TO TAKE OUT OF PARK BRAKE WENT TO FLOOR INSPECTED UNDER TRUCK BRAKE FLUID ALL OVER DRIVEWAY UNDER TRUCK.
I WAS DRIVING APPROX. 25 MPH WITHIN 100 FT. TOWARD A RED LIGHT. A TRUCK PULLING A TRAILER PULLED ACROSS THE ROAD IN FRONT OF ME. I PRESSED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE PEDAL HELD FOR A SECOND AND THEN QUICKLY DROPPED TO THE FLOOR. I WAS ABLE TO SWERVE TO THE RIGHT OF THE TRUCK, MISSING IT AND PUSHED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. REALIZING I ENCOUNTERED TOTAL BRAKE FAILURE I CAUTIOUSLY DROVE THE TRUCK INTO A MCDONALD'S PARKING LOT AT THE CORNER. THERE WAS NO BRAKE WARNING LIGHT COME ON. I LOOKED UNDER THE TRUCK. ON THE DRIVERS SIDE UNDER THE DRIVERS DOOR THE UNDERSIDE WAS SOAKED WITH BRAKE FLUID. WHERE THE 4 BRAKELINES ARE BUNDLED TOGETHER DIRECTLY ON THE FRAME UNDER THE DRIVERS DOOR, ONE OF THE BRAKE LINES HAS A SPLIT IN IT. THE TRUCK IS PRESENTLY BEING EVALUATED FOR REPAIR.
WENT TO GET VEHICLE INSPECTED WAS INFORMED THAT THE FRAME IS RUSTED OUT AND IS UNINSPECTABLE AND THAT I NEED TO JUNK THE TRUCK THE BODY IS GREAT HAS 150000 MILES BUT THE CROSS BRACES ARE RUSTED OUT AND ITS CRACKED OVER THE REAR AXEL WITH ALL THE PROBLEMS OYHERS ARE HAVING AND WITH TOYOTA HAVING RECALL ON FRAME RUSTING OUT GM SHOULD BE DOING THE SAME THEY SAY THAT THE NHTSA IS THE ONE TO TELL THEM TO DO A RECALL AND UNTILL THEY ARE TOLD TO THERE IS NOTHING THAY CAN DO
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BRAKE LINES WERE RUSTED OUT. WHILE DRIVING, THE CONTACT DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL AND IT TRAVELED TO THE FLOORBOARD. THE CONTACT HAD TO SLOWLY DOWNSHIFT TO SLOW DOWN THE VEHICLE AND DRIVE HOME SAFELY. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 150,000.
A BRAKE LINE EXPLODED AS I WAS BACKING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY. LUCKILY, I WAS NOT GOING DOWN THE HIGHWAY. THERE IS SIGNIFICANT CORROSION ON MOST OF THE BRAKE LINES. IT SEEMS VERY DANGEROUS TO MAKE THEM OUT OF A MATERIAL THAT RUSTS COMPLETELY THROUGH AFTER 16 YEARS. WHY ARE THEY NOT USING STAINLESS STEEL?
REAR BRAKES LOCK UP UNDER LIGHT BRAKING OR NORMAL BRAKING, RUSTING BRAKE LINES, REAR EMERGENCY BRAKES BANGING AND CHATTERING. BACK PLATES RUSTED OFF
EXTREME RUST ON UNDER CARRAGE OF VEHICLE. BRAKE LINES RUSTED OUT CAUSING BRAKE FAILURE FRAME RUSTED OUT AT REAR LEAF SPRINGS AND FRAME RAIL CROSS MEMBERS. REAR SHOCK HANGERS RUSTED OFF VEHICLE. FRAME RUSTED SO BAD THAT IT PROHIBITS TOUNG OF ANY TYPE OF TRAILER. TOYOTA HAD SAME PROBLEM AND THEY HAD TO DO A RECALL SO WHY HAS GM NOT HAD TO DO THE SAME THING. IT IS A VERY LARGE SAFETY ISSUE AFFECTING MANY VEHICLES ON THE HWY TODAY.
RUSTED BRAKE LINE BURST RESULTING IN COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE. EVEN THE DUAL SYSTEM TO HAVE AT LEAST TWO FUNCTIONING BRAKES ALSO FAILED. GM USED SUBSTANDARD MATERIAL FOR THE LINES. THESE SHOULD HAVE NOT RUSTED IN LOUISIANA. THE VEHICLE WAS MOVING SLOWLY WHEN THE BRAKES FAILED. I WAS ABLE TO COAST UNTIL I JAMMED INTO PARK. SAME FAILURE ON THE ROAD WOULD HAVE RESULTED IN A MAJOR ACCIDENT
HAD TO DISCONNECT THE ANTI LOCK BRAKE SO I COULD STOP. WHEN DRIVING SLOW AND PRESSING ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE PEDAL IS SOLID AND DOES NOT MOVE. VERY DANGEROUS. CANNOT STOP THE VEHICLE AT ALL. BRAKE LINES ROTTED OUT. HAS TO REPLACE. TRANSMISSION LINES ROTTED OUT. HAD TO REPLACE. TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER ROTTED OUT. HAD TO REPLACE. FUEL LINES ARE ROTTING OUT. NOT REPLACED YET. DRIVE SHAFT IS QUESTIONABLE. SEVERELY RUSTED. REAR BACKING PLATES ROTTED OFF, NO MORE PARKING - EMERGENCY BRAKE. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WILL NOT GO OUT. REPLACED CATALYTIC CONVERTER MANY TIMES WITH NO RESULTS. ENGINE LEAKS OIL. LOOSING COOLANT, POSSIBLE BURNING IT. FUEL MILEAGE IS TERRIBLE. BODY RUSTED OUT. ROCKER PANELS ARE GONE. CAB CORNERS ARE GONE. REAR BUMPER IS GONE. PUTTING THE SPARE TIRE UNDERNEATH IS A STUPID IDEA. THE COST TO REPLACE THESE PARTS IS TOO EXPENSIVE. FOR WHAT THESE VEHICLES COST NEW ALL OF THESE PARTS SHOULD BE MADE OUT OF STAINLESS STEEL OR USE PLASTIC FOR THE FUEL LINES AND BRAKE LINES. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT BEING RELATED TO A POLLUTION CONTROL DEVICE SHOULD BE ENTIRE COVERED BY THE MANUFACTURER. THESE PARTS AND WHATEVER IS UPSTREAM THAT CAUSED THE POLLUTION CONTROL PART TO FAIL SHOULD BE COVERED BY THE MANUFACTURER IN PERPETUITY. ANTI LOCK BRAKES SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM ALL CARS. THE PARTS ARE TOO EXPENSIVE TO REPLACE. THE COST SHOULD NOT BE ON THE SHOULDERS OF THE CAR OWNER. *TR
TOOK VEHICAL TO GET INSPECTED SHOP SAID VEHICAL IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND REFUSED TO INSPECT UNDER FUTHER INSEPTION THERE IS EXSESIVE RUST ON FRAME THAT IS NOT NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR GM NEEDS TO STEP UP LIKE TOYOTA DID AND REPLACE THESE FRAMES PLS LOOK IN TO THIS . THIS WAS MY ONLY VEHICAL AND NOW I DONT HAVE ONE TO DRIVE AND CANT AFFORD TO BUY A NEW ONE
TYPICAL GM PRODUCT, REAR BUMPER RUST OUT, BRAKE LIKES RUSTED COMPLETELY OUT, REAR CROSS MEMBERS, FUEL TANK CROSS MEMBER HAS RUSTED OUT COMPLETELY ON PASSENGER SIDE WHERE THE SHOCK MOUNTS TO AND THE SAME FOR THE REAR CROMMM MEMBER WHERE THE SHOCK MOUNTS TO ON THE DRIVER SIDE. I MEAN THE FUEL TAN CROSS MEMBER HOLDS THE TANK IN PLACE AND IF THAT TANK DROPPS THEN I'D ASSUME THAT IT WOULD BE A SAFETY ISSUE. ATLEAST I HOPE SO.
I WAS HAVING THE EXHAUST CHANGED WHEN I WAS NOTIFIED THAT ONE OF THE CROSS MEMBERS FOR THE FRAME HAD RUSTED COMPLETELY THROUGH AND NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED. IT HAS BEEN REPAIRED, BUT I WAS INFORMED THAT EXCESSIVE RUST IS IN VARIOUS LOCATIONS ON THE REAR OF THE FRAME AND WILL NEED TO BE WATCHED CLOSELY. KEEP IN MIND THAT THESE CROSS MEMBERS SUPPORT THE FUEL TANK AND IF ONE WOULD BREAK, IT LOOKS LIKE IT COULD CASSETTE FUEL TANK TO FALL OFF. THE TRUCK HAS 100,500 MILES ON IT, WHICH IS NOT EXCESSIVE FOR THE YEAR. THE TRUCK SPENT MOST OF ITS LIFE IN MICHIGAN, BUT NOW RESIDES IN ILLINOIS. I HAVE READ SEVERAL FORUMS HAVING THE SAME COMPLAINTS FOR THE 99-2007 MODEL YEAR VEHICLES. THERE ARE SEVERAL HOLES PLACED ON THESE CROSS MEMBERS BY THE MANUFACTURER THAT ALLOW MOISTURE IN, WITH NO PLACE FOR THE MOISTURE TO GO ONCE IT IS PLACE. I AM SURE THERE IS ALSO A LACK OF PROPER PAINT APPLICATION AND EVEN POOR STEEL THAT IS LIKELY CAUSING THE ISSUE. JUST AS TOYOTA HAS DONE, CHEVY SHOULD OFFER A RECALL FOR EXCESSIVE RUST ON THE FRAME. THE TOYOTA TUNDRA RECALL OFFERS A NEW FRAME FOR ANY TUNDRA WITH A RUST HOLE 10MM OR LARGER. WHY ISN'T THE NHTSA INVESTIGATING THIS FURTHER? THIS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN AND ALSO CONSIDERABLY LOWERS THE VALUE OF THE VEHICLE. GM AND CHEVY NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR DECISIONS WHEN DESIGNING AND MANUFACTURING THESE VEHICLES, JUST AS TOYOTA TOOK ACCOUNTABILITY FOR THEIR DECISIONS.
"TAKATA RECALL" AS I WAS LEAVING A LOCAL STORE IN MY NEIGBOR-HOOD,I PUSHED THE BRAKE PEDAL AND IT WENT ALMOST TO THE FLOOR. I THEN TRIED TO PUMP IT UP BUT THAT DID WORK. SO I DROVE IT SLOWLY HOME,DOWN SHIFTING WHILE COMING TO STOPS.I HAVE A 5 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION. WHEN I GOT HOME I NOTICED MY BRAKE FLUID WAS LOW SO I ADDED FLUID. GOT INTO MY TRUCK AND PUMPED THE BRAKE PEDAL A FEW TIMES,NOTHING HAPPENED.GOT OUT AND SEEN BRAKE FLUID DRIPPING ON MY DRIVEWAY. I NOTICED IT WAS COMING FROM MY RUSTY BRAKE LINES BUT COULDN'T PINPOINT IT.TWO YEARS AGO I WAS WORKING IN W.VIRGINIA AND THROUGH THE WINTER MONTHS AND YES THE SALT DID A NUMBER ALL UNDER MY TRUCK,EVERYWHERE. I HAVE AN OLD FLIP PHONE THEREFOR NO FANCY DATA FROM THIS PHONE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH, THE BRAKES FAILED WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. THE FAILURE RECURRED SEVERAL TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ABS MODULE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 168,523.
FARM BROKE ON THE DRIVERS SIDE AND IS CRACKED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. THIS TRUCK HAS NOT BEEN INVOLVED IN A COLLISION. THIS WAS DISCOVERED BY A REPAIR SHOPS WHEN I WAS HAVING A FLAT TIRE FIXED.

I WAS CHANGING THE SHOCKS ON THE REAR AND NOTICED THAT THE FRAME WHERE THE TOP SHOCK MOUNT IS IS ALMOST RUSTED OFF. WILL CHEVY PAY TO REPAIR THE FRAME DAMAGE BECAUSE ITS A SAFETY HAZARD. WHY IS IT THAT CHEVY FRAMES RUST SOOO BAD? WHY DON'T THEY COAT THE FRAMES WITH SOMETHING TO THEY DON'T RUST SOOO BAD. FORD FRAMES DON'T RUST THIS BAD.
AS I ATTEMPTED TO BRAKE TO A STOP ON DRY PAVEMENT, THE BRAKE PEDAL SUDDENLY STIFFENED,PREVENTING ME FROM USING THE PEDAL TO COME TO A CONTROLLED STOP. FORTUNATELY, I WAS GOING SLOW AT THE TIME AND WAS IN A PARKING LOT, SO WAS ABLE TO STEER AWAY FROM COLLIDING WITH A PARKED CAR.. FROM ALL THAT I READ ,THE ROOT CAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM INVOLVES THE ABS SYSTEM. ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO, I HAD THE BRAKE LINES COMPLETELY REPLACED WITH A BETTER GRADE THAN CAME WITH THE TRUCK. I DID THIS BECAUSE, WHILE THE TRUCK IS GOING ON 15 YEARS, THE MAIN COMPONENTS APPEAR TO HAVE SEVERAL MORE YEARS. BUT NOT WITH THIS SORT OF FUNDAMENTAL SAFETY ISSUE. I'M ANGRY THAT GM HAS NOT HAD TO RECALL MY TRUCK FOR THIS OBVIOUS SAFETY FLAW IN THE BRAKE SYSTEM.
I SLOW TO MAKE A LEFT HAND TURN OFF HWY 20, ONCE IN THE TURNING LANE I SEE A SEMI CROSSING IN FRONT OF ME FROM LEFT TO RIGHT. I PUT ON THE BRAKES, THE PEDDLE GOES TO FLOOR. UNABLE TO STOP I MAKE A TIRE SCREECHING TURN IN FRONT OF THE SEMI BARELY MISSING HIM. BRAKE LINES RUSTED THROUGH ON DRIVERS SIDE JUST FORWARD OF THE DOOR.
I WAS DRIVING MY TRUCK AND NOTICED THE ABS LIGHT COME ON AND A HUMMING SOUND FROM UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. I STOPPED THE VEHICLE AND TURNED IT OFF INCLUDING REMOVING THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION, AND A MOTOR NEAR THE ABS SYSTEM KEPT RUNNING. I THEN PRESSED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AGAIN AND ONE OF THE BRAKE LINES RUPTURED. I LOOKED AT ALL THE LINES AND THEY ARE ALL SEVERALLY RUSTED AND ABOUT TO BLOW TOO. AFTER READING ABOUT THIS ON THE INTERNET THIS IS APPARENTLY A HUGE ISSUE WITH A LOT OF GM VEHICLES MADE BETWEEN 1999 AND 2003. I ENDED UP SPENDING $800 TO HAVE ALL THE BRAKE LINES REPLACED SO THE VEHICLE IS SAFE AGAIN. I AM AMAZED THIS HAS NOT BEEN RECALLED OR AT LEAST HAD AN OFFER FOR A DISCOUNTED REPAIR. I AM GLAD THAT I DIDNT GET INTO AN ACCIDENT TO FIND THIS ISSUE LIKE A LOT OF STORIES I READ. I GUESS IT WILL JUST TAKE A FEW DEATHS BEFORE IT IS RECALLED.
ALL OF THE STEEL BRAKE LINES ARE LEAKING AND MY BRAKES AREN'T WORKING. I WAS DRIVING UP MY ROAD AND THE BRAKES WENT OUT. I HAD TO DRIVE VERY SLOWLY TO GET HOME. I'VE CALLED SEVERAL GARAGES AND THEY ALL TELL ME THAT ALL OF THE SILVERADOS HAVE BAD BRAKE LINES THAT RUST THROUGH AND THEY CHANGE THEM ALL OF THE TIME. SOME OF THE GARAGES TELL ME THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED AND GM SHOULD PAY FOR THEM. WILL GENERAL MOTORS PAY FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THESE BRAKE LINES? I RECENTLY BOUGHT THIS TRUCK AND THE BRAKES AREN'T WORKING. I HAVE A 2000 FORD RANGER THAT I BOUGHT NEW AND HAVE NEVER HAD ANY BRAKE PROBLEMS , IT STILL HAS THE ORIGINAL BRAKE LINES. THEY SHOULDN'T BE ABLE TO USE STEEL BRAKE LINES ON CARS. THEY SHOULD BE A RUST FREE MATERIAL. HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN KILLED BECAUSE THEY CAN'T STOP BECAUSE THE BRAKE LINES BLEW OUT. THAT'S CRAZY. CAN'T YOU MAKE THE CAR COMPANIES USE CORROSION RESISTANT BRAKE LINES WHEN THEY BUILD THESE VEHICLES? CAN YOU HELP ME WITH THIS? IT'S GOING TO COST $500 TO REPLACE ALL OF THE LINES.
STEEL BRAKE LINE FAILURE WHERE LINES RUN BETWEEN FRAME AND FRONT DRIVERS SIDE CAB MOUNT. FROM THE DEALER THAT REPLACED THE LINES, THERE WAS A PIN HOLE IN THE LINE. I HAVE THE PARTS. WENT TO STOP AT A RED LIGHT IN THE MIDDLE LANE OF A 6 LANE DIVIDED HIGHWAY AT 5:15PM. THE LIGHT CHANGED AND I BRAKED HARD FROM 50 MPH. JUST BEFORE THE TRUCK WAS TO STOP AT THE STOP LINE, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND THE TRUCK CONTINUED THROUGH THE RED LIGHT INTO THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION WHERE IT CAME TO A STOP. I WAS THE FIRST VEHICLE AT THE LIGHT, THERE WAS ONE CAR TO MY RIGHT IN THE RIGHT LANE AND TWO CARS SIDE BY SIDE AT THE JUG HANDLE TO MY RIGHT WAITING TO CROSS THE SIX LANE STATE HIGHWAY. IT WAS JUST DUMB LUCK THERE WASN'T A VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. TWO SECONDS LATER THE CROSS TRAFFIC WOULD HAVE BROADSIDED ME AND ANOTHER SECOND LATER I WOULD HAVE BROADSIDED THE CROSS TRAFFIC. THIS STATE HIGHWAY IS INFAMOUS IN THE COUNTY FOR PEDESTRIAN FATALITIES. THERE WERE NO WARNINGS OF THE FAILURE AND NO BRAKE WARNING LIGHTS ON THE DASH. I MOVED THE TRUCK THROUGH THE RED LIGHT AND OVER TO THE FAR RIGHT LANE AND TESTED THE BRAKING. I HAD VERY MINIMAL BRAKING. I HAD DRIVEN THE VEHICLE APPROXIMATELY 50 MILES BEFORE THIS HAPPENED WITH TWO INCIDENTS OF HARD BRAKING WITH NO ISSUES. I WAS LESS THAN A 1/4 MILE FROM MY HOME. LIMPED HOME AT LOW SPEED WITH MY EMERGENCY FLASHERS ON. HAD TRUCK TOWED FROM MY HOME TO THE CHEVROLET DEALER FOR REPAIR. RECOMMENDED REPLACING ALL STEEL BRAKE LINES DUE TO THE FAILURE AND RUST ON THE LINES. $1300 FOR COATED STEEL BRAKE LINE REPLACEMENTS PLUS TWO FRONT CALIPERS BECAUSE THE HEX ON THE BLEED SCREWS WAS COMPLETELY RUSTED AWAY. LAST SERVICED AT THE DEALER ON 4/8/14 AND ONLY DRIVEN 1763 MILES SINCE THAT SERVICE. ON THE INSPECTION REPORT THE DEALER HAD CHECKED THE YELLOW WARNING ON BRAKE SYSTEM AND JUST NOTED BRAKES HAVE RUST BUILDUP, NO LEAKS.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500 EQUIPPED WITH GENERAL AMERI 660 AS TIRES (NA), SIZE: P255/70R16 (NA). WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, THERE WAS A LOUD THUMP SOUND NEAR THE REAR DRIVER SIDE TIRE AND THE CONTACT LOST CONTROL OF THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT PULLED OVER AND OBSERVED THAT THE TREAD SEPARATED FROM THE REAR DRIVER SIDE TIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TREAD SEPARATED. THE TIRE WAS NOT REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 93,000 AND THE TIRE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 15,000.

ANTILOCK PROBLEM
WHEN RETURNING HOME MY BRAKES FAILED WHEN ENTERING MY DRIVEWAY CAUSING ME TO STRIKE A TREE. THERE WAS MINOR DAMAGE TO THE GRILL OF MY VEHICLE. THE CAUSE WAS A RUPTURED BRAKE LINE. THERE WAS NO WARNING OF THE LOSS OF BRAKES. *TR
AS I WAS TOPPING THE CURVE OF AN ENTRANCE RAMP, I FELT THE REAR OF THE TRUCK LOSE TRACTION ON THE WET ASPHALT AND THE TAIL STARTED TO MOVE. I LET OFF THE GAS PEDAL TO GAIN CONTROL, AND THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO PROPEL THE TRUCK AS IF THE GAS PEDAL WAS STUCK. THIS CAUSED THE REAR OF THE TRUCK TO CONTINUE AROUND AND SLAMMED THE FRONT OF THE TRUCK INTO A GUARD RAIL AND FINALLY CAME TO A STOP WITH TRUCK PARALLEL TO GUARD RAIL AND FACING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION OF TRAFFIC. I WAS HOLDING THE BRAKES AS SOON AS I REALIZED THE TRUCK WAS OUT OF CONTROL. IF NOT FOR THE GUARD RAIL, MY FAMILY AND I WOULD HAVE BEEN PROPELLED OVER A STEEP EMBANKMENT WITH FATAL RESULTS. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I'VE HAD THIS OCCUR ON THIS VEHICLE SINCE I PURCHASED IT IN 2001. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. *TR
BACKED OUT OF GARAGE DRIVE WITH A DOWNWARD SLOPE. THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. STOPPED THE TRUCK USING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. THE BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON AFTER THE INCIDENT, NOT BEFORE. CHECKED THE BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR, FLUID LEVEL WAS BELOW MINIMUM. UNDER THE VEHICLE, THE PROBLEM WAS APPARENT. NEAR THE ABS CONTROL UNIT IT LOOKED LIKE THE METAL LINE(S) HAD EXPLODED AND BRAKE FLUID WAS ALL OVER THE UNDERSIDE OF THE TRUCK AND DRIPPING DOWN THE FRAME RAIL. CHECKING THE VEHICLE, I FOUND ALL THE METAL BRAKE LINES, ESPECIALLY NEAR THE ABS UNIT, WERE BADLY RUSTED. TWO PROBLEMS: 1. THE FAILURE WAS CATASTROPHIC WITHOUT WARNING. WHILE THE BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON AFTER THE BRAKE LINE FAILURE, IT PROVIDED NO PRIOR INDICATION OF PROBLEMS. BRAKE FLUID WAS OK PRIOR TO THE LINE FAILURE (NO BRAKE SERVICE LIGHT) AND THE BRAKE FLUID LOSS WAS THE RESULT OF THE BRAKE LINE RUPTURE. THE BRAKE LINE, WEAKENED BY RUST, FAILED WITH THE INCREASED PRESSURE WHEN BRAKES WERE APPLIED. 2. THERE WAS NO RESIDUAL OR BACK-UP BRAKING AVAILABLE EVEN WITH FULLY DEPRESSED BRAKE PEDAL. I'VE READ GM'S STATEMENT THAT THE BRAKE SERVICE LIGHT WOULD PROVIDE ADVANCE WARNING AND THE BRAKING SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE BRAKING (WITH LONGER STOPPING DISTANCES) SHOULD THERE BE FAILURES IN THE SYSTEM. UNFORTUNATELY, IN CATASTROPHIC BRAKE LINE FAILURES THERE WERE NO WARNINGS; THE WARNING LIGHT WAS DELAYED AFTER THE FACT. FROM AN ENGINEER'S PERSPECTIVE, DID THE METALLURGICAL CONTENT OF THE BRAKE LINES CHANGE IN 1999 OR PERHAPS THAT WAS WHEN THE ABS HOUSING CHANGED TO ALUMINUM? THE GALVANIC NATURE OF THE STEEL BRAKE LINES CONNECTING TO ALUMINUM IN THE PRESENCE OF SALT WATER WILL CERTAINLY RESULT IN THE INCREASED CORROSION OF THE BRAKE LINES. SUMMARY: THE NHTSA NEEDS TO ISSUE A RECALL (REGARDLESS WHETHER GM IS HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MONETARY COSTS OF REPAIR) TO PREVENT ACCIDENTS. *TR
DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, STARTED TO MAKE RIGHT TURN AND ENGINE SUDDENLY SHUT OFF AND JUST AS QUICKLY KICK STARTED. DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY GOING 60 MPH, THE CAR AHEAD OF US MADE A SUDDEN, DRASTIC SLOW DOWN. AS WE PRESSED THE BRAKES, THEY WENT TO THE FLOOR AND WE CONTINUED TO KEEP MOVING FORWARD AND STOPPED INCHES BEFORE HITTING THE CAR AHEAD OF US. THANKFULLY WE HAD AT LEAST 5 CAR LENGTHS BETWEEN US. HAD BREAK LINE REPAIRED. MECHANIC SAID IT HAD RUSTED THROUGH. FEBRUARY 28, 2015 PULLING INTO A PARKING LOT WITH CARS AHEAD OF US, MOVING 4-5 MPH. CAR IN FRONT OF US SUDDENLY STOPS, WE GO TO BRAKE AND HEARD A NOISE, BRAKES WENT TO THE FLOOR AND WE HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF US.( WE WERE A 1/2 CAR LENGTH BEHIND THE CAR.) DUE TO MOVING AT A SLOW SPEED, THERE WAS NO DAMAGE OTHER THAN THE OCCUPANTS OF BOTH CARS BEING JERKED. TOOK TO A MECHANIC AND ABS SENSORS WERE RUSTED OUT AS WELL AS THE HUBS ETC... HE THEN TOLD US HE CANNOT BELIEVE THE AMOUNT OF RUST AND CORROSION WE HAVE ON THE ENTIRE UNDERSIDE. HE STATED IT LOOKED LIKE A 50 YEAR OLD VEHICLE THAT SAT IN A FIELD FOR YEARS. HE ADVISED US TO GET THE REST OF THE BRAKE LINES REPLACED AS WELL AS WATCH THE FRAMING ETC.. FOR CRACKING. WE DO NOT FEEL SAFE ANYMORE! THIS TRUCK HAS BEEN THOROUGHLY CARED FOR AND KEPT WASHED EVEN DURING WINTERS. *TR
