FAULTY AND INFERIOR DESIGN ON POWER WINDOWS MECHANISM. CABLE BROKE ON DRIVERS WINDOW IN OCT. 2004, CABLE BROKE ON PASSENGER SIDE MAY 6,2004. BOTH TIMES THE WINDOW REMAINED IN THE OPEN POSITION. COST OF $600.00 TO REPAIR. GM WOULD NOT COVER COST BECAUSE OF MILEAGE. *NM
I REQUEST THAT YOUR AGENCY INVESTIGATE AN IRRESPONSIBLE AND INTENTIONAL ACTION ON THE PART OF THE GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION (GM) TO PURPOSELY INSTALL AN INFERIOR/DEFECTIVE SUN SHELL SPLINE IN THE TRANSMISSION OF COUNTLESS TRUCKS AND SUVS. WHEN SUBSTANTIATED, I REQUEST THAT YOUR AGENCY TAKE ACTION TO FORCE GM TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS ACTION, CONDUCT A RECALL CAMPAIGN, AND REIMBURSE CONSUMERS THAT HAVE ALREADY HAD TO PAY FOR THESE EXPENSIVE REPAIRS OUT OF THEIR POCKETS. I OWN A 2002, 1500 SILVERADO, Z-71 TRUCK VIN [XXX]5 WITH 52,600 MILES. ON MAY 3, 2006 THE TRANSMISSION FAILED WITH REVERSE, 2ND AND 4TH GEARS NOT FUNCTIONING. UPON INTERNAL INSPECTION AT THE LOCAL AAMOCO TRANSMISSION REPAIR SHOP IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY AN INFERIOR/DEFECTIVE SUN SHELL SPLINE. THE TRANSMISSION EXPERT AT THE SHOP STATED THAT THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM IN GM TRUCKS AND THAT IT WAS KNOWN BY GM AND AS A RESULT A NEW STRONGER SUN SHELL SPLINE HAD BEEN INSTALLED, AFTER SUPPLIES OF THE INFERIOR/DEFECTIVE PARTS WERE EXHAUSTED. I DID FURTHER RESEARCH ON THE WEB AND WAS ABLE TO CONFIRM THE TRANSMISSION SHOPS STATEMENTS WITH MANY COMPLAINTS FOUND BY GM TRUCK OWNERS FOR THE SAME PREMATURE AND EXPENSIVE TRANSMISSION FAILURES. IT IS VERY OBVIOUS FROM THE EXPERIENCES OF OTHER GM TRUCK OWNERS THAT GM DOES NOT INTEND TO STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS THAT ARE OUT OF WARRANTY DUE AN INFERIOR/DEFECTIVE PART THAT APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN KNOWINGLY INSTALLED. THE COST FOR REBUILDING MY TRANSMISSION WAS $2951.75, WHICH I HAVE HAD TO PAY FOR OUT OF POCKET. WHILE RUNNING AN ERRAND AT LUNCH AN 18 YR. OLD BOY CAME ACROSS 2 LANES OF TRAFFIC TO DO A U-TURN RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. I WAS TRAVELING AT APPROX. 45-50 MILES AN HOUR WITH A GREEN LIGHT WHEN I HIT HIS SMALLER TRUCK HEAD ON. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY IN MY SILVERADO. THIS IS THE 2ND GM VEHICLE THAT I HAVE OWNED AND BEEN IN DURING A SERIOUS CRASH WHERE THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS! *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE ABS ACTIVATES AT LOW SPEEDS. WHILE DRIVING 5 TO 10 MPH, WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED THE VEHICLE HAS AN INCREASE STOPPING DISTANCE. THE BRAKES ALSO GRAB AND PULL THE VEHICLE TO THE RIGHT. THERE IS A NHTSA RECALL, # 05V379000, REGARDING THE SERVICE BRAKES: ANTILOCK. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO THE VIN. UPDATED 5/10/2006 - THE DEALER FOUND SALT CORROSION ON THE FRONT ABS BRAKES. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED AT SLOW SPEEDS OF 8 MPH THE ABS ENGAGED, CAUSING EXTENDED STOPPING DISTANCE. THERE IS NHTSA RECALL # 05V379000 REGARDING THE SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC: ANTILOCK. THIS VEHICLE HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS AS INDICATED IN THE RECALL; HOWEVER IT WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL BECAUSE THE STATE OF WISCONSIN WAS NOT LISTED ON AFFECTED STATES. UPDATED 05/30/06. *AK
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING THE NEUTRAL START BACKUP SWITCH GETS WET AND CAUSES THE TRANSMISSION TO LOCK UP. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED OF THE PROBLEM.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. THE CONTACT EXPERIENCED SEVERAL ISSUES WITH HIS VEHICLE AND TOOK IT TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR REPAIR. WHEN HE TOOK THE RECEIPT FOR THE REPAIR TO THE DEALER, THEY REFUSED TO SPEAK WITH HIM. THE DEALER CLAIMED TO HAVE CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS INFORMED THAT THEY WERE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR CHARGES BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE REAR END SEAL, TRANSMISSION COLLAR, INTAKE GASKET, THEUPDATED 04-20-09 *BF HEAD GASKET ON THE ENGINE, AND THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER WERE ALL REPLACED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 98,000.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE STOPPING AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 3-4 MPH THE DRIVER SIDE FRONT BRAKE ABS ACTIVATES. THIS CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO SWERVE TO THE RIGHT AND A LONGER STOPPING DISTANCE. THERE IS A NHTSA RECALL, # 05V379000, REGARDING THE ANTILOCK BRAKES. THE VEHICLE HAS THE SAME PROBLEMS AS INDICATED IN THE RECALL; HOWEVER, IT IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO THE VIN.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN BRAKING FROM 5MPH, THE ABS BRAKING SYSTEM WOULD ACTIVATE ERRONEOUSLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIRS UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 05V379000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC: ANTILOCK) HOWEVER, THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED A SECOND TIME. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 53,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 94,000.
2002 CHEVY SILVERADO 1500 - AT 23,000 MILES THE TRANSMISSION FAILED AND WAS REBUILT/REPLACED AT A GM DEALERSHIP IN PENNSYLVANIA - AT 53,000 MILE TRANSMISSION FAILED AND WAS REPLACED AT A TRANSMISSION SHOP DUE TO BEING OUT OF WARRENTY (THAT'S A SUPRISE) THE TRANY SHOP FOUND THAT THE GM DEALERSHIP HAD NOT EVEN REPLACED ALL OF THE BOLTS IN THE TRANSMISSION. THE COST WAS $1500.00 PLUS A RENTAL CAR DURING THE REPAIR PROCESS. I CAN SEE THAT THIS SEEMS TO BE AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSION. MY CONCERN IS THAT IF MY WIFE IS DRIVING AND THE TRANSMISSION FAILS AGAIN. GM SHOULD HAVE MORE THAN ENOUGH INFORMATION TO DO A RECALL ON THE TRANSMISSION.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 3500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE PARKING BRAKE WILL NOT HOLD, WHICH CAUSES UNINTENDED VEHICLE MOVEMENT. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP AND THE MECHANIC ATTEMPTED TO ADJUST THE CABLES. IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE REPAIR, THE FAILURE CONTINUED. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 05V161000 (PARKING BRAKE); THEREFORE, THEY WOULD NOT ASSUME ANY RESPONSIBILITY. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED ACCORDING TO THE RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 71,500.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING AT NO PARTICULAR SPEED, THE ENGINE RAN ROUGH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP FOR INSPECTION AND THE MECHANIC DETERMINED THE FUEL INJECTORS WERE BLOCKED. THE INJECTORS WERE CHANGED; HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM PERSISTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE REPAIR SHOP WHERE THE INJECTORS WERE CLEANED. AGAIN, THE PROBLEM WAS APPARENT AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE MECHANIC. DURING THE LAST INSPECTION, THE MECHANIC DETERMINED THE FUEL LINES WERE CORRODED DUE TO ROAD SALT CORROSION. THE FUEL LINES WERE REPLACED AND THE PROBLEM WAS CORRECTED.
ANTI-SKID BRAKE SYSTEM ACTIVATES AT LOW SPEED, EXTENDS STOPPING DISTANCE AND CAUSES VEHICLE TO LURCH TO THE SIDE OCCASIONALLY. A GM RECALL BULLETIN EXISTS FOR THIS PROBLEM BUT GM SAYS IT DOES DOT APPLY TO MY VEHICLE, EVEN THOUGH MY VIN IS INCLUDED IN THE BULLETIN. *JB
ANTI LOCK BRAKES ACTIVATE AT LOW SPEEDS ON DRY ROADS AND INCREASE STOPPING DISTANCES. THIS ISSUE IS ADDRESSED BY RECALL 05068A AND 05V379000. MY VIN IS LISTED HOWEVER THE CHEVROLET DEALER THAT I WENT TO ADVISED THAT IT IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL. I AM CONCERNED THAT AN ACCIDENT WILL RESULT FROM THIS DEFECT. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO PASS ANOTHER VEHICLE AT 45 MPH, THERE WAS A LOUD NOISE NOTICED COMING FROM UNDER THE VEHICLE. THE TRANSMISSION WAS SLIPPING AND THE REVERSE WAS INOPERABLE. THE DEALERSHIP WAS ALERTED.
MY 2002 SILVERADO TRUCK HAS A DEFECT IN MATERIAL IN THE HOOD LATCH, WHICH IS CORRODING AND RUSTING. THIS IS A SAFETY MATTER THAT THE MANUFACTURER DOES NOT WANT TO DEAL WITH. *JB
WHENEVER WINDSHIELD WIPERS ON CONTINUOUSLY FOR MORE THAN A FEW MINUTES THE LINKAGE "FALLS APART OR POPS OFF" LEAVING ONLY THE DRIVERS SIDE WIPER WORKING. *JB
I PURCHASED A 2002 Z71 CHEVROLET CREWCAB 4 W/D PICKUP TRUCK FROM HENDRICK CHEVROLET IN SEPTEMBER OF 2004, AND HAVE HAD MY TRANSMISSION (1ST, 3RD AND REVERSE) GO OUT TWICE IN LESS THAN A YEAR. I CONTACTED GM, BUT THERE WAS NO RECALL AT THAT TIME, BUT THERE WERE A LOT OF COMPLAINTS ON THE NHTSA SITE ABOUT THIS SAME PROBLEM ON MY MODEL TRUCK. THE FIRST TIME IT WENT OUT OF MAY OF 2005, IT HAPPENED AGAIN FEBRUARY OF THIS YEAR. I HAD TO PAY $1,400 TO HAVE IT FIXED IN MAY 2005, BUT THE PLACE OF BUSINESS WHO FIXED IT, FIXED IT AGAIN AT NO COST, AS HE SAID HE GUARANTEES HIS WORK FOR A YEAR, AND SINCE IT HAD NOT BEEN A FULL YEAR, HE DIDN'T CHARGE ME...YOU MIGHT SAY I WAS UNLUCKY AND LUCKY AT THE SAME TIME. I BELIEVE THERE IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THAT PARTICULAR MODEL PICKUP. *NM
ROUTINE MAINTENANCE REVEALED A LEAK IN THE TRANSFER CASE. THIS LEAD TO DISCOVER A SMALL HOLE IN THE CASE. THIS IS CAUSED BY A PART DEFECT THAT BREAKS OVER TIME. USUALLY AROUND 85,000 TO 105,000 MILES. THE PART IS AN "ANTI-RATTLE CLIP" THAT PREVENTS THE INNER PUMP FROM OF COURSE RATTLING. WHEN THIS PART BREAKS, THE PUMP THEN RUBS A HOLE FROM THE INSIDE OUT. IF THIS IS NOT CAUGHT IN TIME, THE LUBRICATING OIL WOULD RUN DRY AND THIS WOULD LEAD TO A DRIVETRAIN MALFUNCTION. I WILL BE ORDERING A REPLACEMENT TRANSFER CASE. YES OLD PART WILL BE AVAILABLE. NOTE: AS OF YET, THE REPLACEMENT PART FOR THIS HAS NO MODIFICATIONS TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN. *JB
2002 SILVERADO K1500 BRAKE PEDAL FAILED TO STOP THE VEHICLE. *TS ***NAR*** THE CONSUMER WAS TOLD ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES BETWEEN THE MASTER CYLINDER AND ELECTRO HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT WERE RUSTED AND SOME WERE LEAKING FLUID. *JB
SPONGY BRAKES, NO BRAKES AT TIMES. LAST INCIDENT FEB. 1, 2006 WHILE BACKING IN DRIVE. PUSHED ON BRAKE AND PEDAL WENT TO FLOOR. A LOUD RATTLING, HAMMERING NOISE CAME FROM VEHICLE AND NO BRAKING FELT. I HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS SINCE I BOUGHT THE TRUCK IN 2003 AT 22586 MILES. THE MASTER CYLINDER WAS REBUILT ABOUT APRIL 23, 2004 AND IT DIDN'T HELP; IN FACT WE ABOUT LOST ALL BRAKING GOING HOME FROM DEALER. I PHONED THE DEALER AND HE ORDERED A NEW MASTER CYLINDER. IT WAS REPLACED MAY 3, 2004 BUT THE PEDAL WAS STILL SPONGY AND BRAKING VERY POOR. WHEN STOPPED AND ENGINE RUNNING YOU CAN PUSH THE BRAKE PEDAL CLEAR TO THE FLOOR. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THIS IS NORMAL. WELL, NORMAL ALMOST CAUSED A WRECK ON A DOWN HILL T ROAD WITH MY WIFE WITH ME. I PHONED CHEVROLET CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER (FILE 1-212176923) FOR HELP. A WASTE OF TIME. I PHONED CHEVROLET MOTOR DIVISION (1800-222-1020) AND ALL THEY SUGGESTED WAS TO TAKE THE TRUCK BACK TO THE DEALER, A 30 MILE DRIVE ONE WAY. THEY DIDN'T HELP IN FOUR OTHER VISITS . I DID TAKE IT BACK ON JAN. 6, 2006 FOR A BRAKE RECALL ON WHEEL DETECTORS BUT IT DIDN'T HELP THE BRAKING A BIT. THANKS. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE INSPECTING THE BRAKES ON THE VEHICLE CORROSION WAS NOTICED ON THE ROTORS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR INSPECTION. UPON INSPECTION, THE DEALERSHIP DETERMINED THE ROTORS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT REPLACED THE ROTORS AND NOTIFIED THE MANUFACTURER.
THIS VEHICLE HAD A DEFECTIVE DISTRIBUTOR CAP. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO START IT THE ENGINE JERKED SEVERAL TIMES CAUSING THE ENGINE BLOCK TO CRACK WHERE THE STARTER IS MOUNTED. THE DEALER FIRST REPLACED THE ORIGINAL CAP WITH ANOTHER DEFECTIVE CAP. WHEN THEY REPLACED IT THE SECOND TIME, I WAS INFORMED THAT THE BLOCK WAS CRACKED AND THEY COULD NOT FIX IT. *NM
2001-2002 SILVERADO PICKUP WITH ALLISON LCT1000 AUTO-TRANS. BULLETIN 02-07-30-011B I HAVE HAD THIS SWITCH FAIL TWICE, GM KNOWS OF THE BULLETIN BUT FAILS TO SEE HOW DANGEROUS THE TRUCK BECOMES WHEN SWITCH FAILS. YOU HAVE VARIETY OF SHIFTING PROBLEM, AND TRUCK LUNGES INTO AND OUT OF GEARS AS YOU CAN NOT FIND NEUTRAL/PARK. *NM
DT*: THE CONSUMER STATED ALL 4 ROTORS WERE PEELING ALONG THE LAMINATIONS AND EXPOSING THE METAL PLATES. THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF RUST, JUST EXTREME AN BREAKDOWN OF THE MATERIAL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT EXPOSED TO HAZARDOUS OR SEVERE WEATHER CONDITIONS. ALTHOUGH THE ROTORS CONTINUED TO DETERIORATE, THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN SEEN BY A DEALER. *JB

SLOWING TRUCK ON APPROACH TO A STOP SIGN, ROAD CONDITIONS-DRY ASPHALT, ROAD SURFACE CONSISTED OF SHALLOW NARROWLY SPACED WASHBOARDS, SPEED-APPROX. 20 MPH. 2.WHEN TRUCK ENCOUNTERED WASHBOARD AREA, THE BRAKE PEDAL PULSED AT AN ABNORMALLY HIGH FREQUENCY, THE PEDAL WENT SOFT, THE BRAKE ACTION WAS SO SLIGHT THAT ONE COULDN'T TELL THEY WERE APPLIED AND THE TRUCK NEARLY WENT THROUGH A STOP SIGN AS THE RESULT. 3. DEALER INSPECTED ABS SYSTEM, STATED A CODE FOR LEFT FRONT SENSOR WAS SET, TEST DROVE TRUCK BUT CODE WOULD NOT RESET, NO PARTS OR REPAIRS WERE COMPLETED. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE TRANSFER CASE PUNCTURED INTERNALLY AND THE OIL DRAINED OUT WHEN DRIVING AROUND 25MPH. THE CONTACT HEARD A KNOCKING NOISE AND TOOK THE VEHICLE TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP FOR INSPECTION. THE TRANSFER CASE WAS FAULTY AND THE REPAIR PART WAS ORDERED.
WHEEL SPEED SENSOR IS FALSELY ACTIVATING THE ABS. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHEN STOPPING AT A STOP SIGN, THE ABS ACTIVATED CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO CRASH INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE. UPON INSPECTION THE DEALERSHIP FOUND CORROSION ON THE WHEEL SENSORS. THE DRIVER SIDE WHEEL SENSOR WAS REPLACED AND THE CORROSION WAS CLEANED OFF THE PASSENGER SIDE WHEEL SENSOR. THERE IS A RECALL FOR THE ABS, THE NHTSA # IS 05V379000. THE VEHICLE HAS THE SAME PROBLEMS AS INDICATED IN THE RECALL; HOWEVER IT IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO THE VIN. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE AUTOMATIC DOOR LOCKS FAIL INTERMITTENTLY. ON ONE OCCASION THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER WERE BOTH TRAPPED IN THE VEHICLE FOR SEVERAL MINUTES BECAUSE THE DOOR LOCKS FAILED AND THE OVERRIDE FEATURE WOULD NOT WORK. THE CONTACT MADE SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO UNLOCK THE DOORS BOTH MANUALLY AND AUTOMATICALLY, WITHOUT SUCCESS, HOWEVER THE DOORS OPENED AS UNEXPECTEDLY AS THEY HAD LOCKED. ON ANOTHER OCCASION THE KEY HAD TO BE USED TO UNLOCK THE DOORS FROM THE OUTSIDE. THE VEHICLE WAS SEEN BY THE SERVICE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES, BUT THE ORIGIN OF THE PROBLEM WAS NEVER DETERMINED. 2002 CHEVY HD EXT CAB. I TOOK MY PICKUP TO A GM DEALER BECAUSE I KNEW THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE. THEY TOLD ME THAT MY PICKUP WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE BRAKES SHIFT INTO ABS WHEN COMING TO A STOP ALL THE TIME. IT IS CLEAR THAT THEIR IS AN ISSUE WITH THE ABS BRAKING SYSTEMS IN PICKUPS IN THE NORTHERN REGIONS DUE TO SALT, STATED IN THE RECALL FOR NEWER MODELS. I CALLED GM CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THE 2002 PICKUPS ARE NOT YET INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE RESOLVED BY CHEVROLET. PLEASE HELP!! *JB
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE BRAKE ROTOR BUSTED WHILE DRIVING AT 20 MPH. THE CONTACT WAS DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR WITH LITTLE BRAKING CAPABILITIES. THERE WERE NO VISIBLE ROAD HAZARDS WHICH COULD HAVE CAUSED THE ROTORS TO FAIL. PRIOR TO THIS FAILURE THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP. UPON INSPECTION BOTH REAR ROTORS WERE RUSTED. ACCORDING TO THE DEALERSHIP THIS WAS NORMAL. THE DEFECTIVE ROTORS WERE REPLACED. *AK UPDATED 1/25/2006 - *NM

LOW COOLANT LIGHT ON MY 2002 CHEVY MALIBU HAS BEEN COMING ON. THE CHEVY DEALER CHECKED THE LOW COOLANT LIGHT COMING ON, CHECKED FOR LOW COOLANT. FOUND INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET LEAKING INTERNALLY. COOLANT MIXING WITH OIL. *NM
MY VEHICLE HAS SUSTAINED TWO COMPLETE TRANSMISSION FAILURES WITHIN 50K MILES OF USAGE. THE FIRST FAILURE OCCURRED AROUND 25K MILES WHILE TRYING TO GET OUT MY DRIVEWAY. THE SECOND FAILURE OCCURRED AROUND 50K MILES WHILE TRAVELING ON A HIGHWAY AT 65 MPH. LUCKILY, I WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT INTO THE BREAKDOWN WITHOUT INCIDENT (ONLY BECAUSE OF LIGHT TRAFFIC CONDITIONS). IN BOTH CASES, THE TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY SERVICE, SO I DON'T HAVE A COMPLAINT ABOUT THAT ASPECT. I DO WORRY ABOUT THE FACT THAT TWO TRANSMISSION FAILURES OCCURRING AT AROUND 25K MILES APART SUGGESTS A PATTERN OF FAILURE. *NM
IN DECEMBER OF 2005 I BROUGHT MY 2002 SILVERADO TO THE DEALER FOR A RECALL ON ABS SENSORS. I WAS CONTACTED AND TOLD I NEEDED BRAKE ROTORS AND PADS ON ALL FOUR WHEELS. I ASKED THEM HOW A TRUCK WITH ONLY 10,200 MILES THAT HAD BEEN GARAGED SINCE PURCHASE COULD REQUIRE $900 WORTH OF BRAKES. FIRST I WAS TOLD IT WAS DUE TO INACTIVITY. AFTER EXPLAINING I HAVE A 1976 GMC CK10 PARKED BESIDE THE SILVERADO AND IT DID NOT REQUIRE SUCH REPAIR, I WAS TOLD NEW BRAKE MATERIALS ARE INFERIOR TO THE OLDER BRAKE MATERIALS. I SUSPECT THERE MAY BE FAULTY MATERIALS USED IN GMC TRUCK BRAKES CIRCA 2002 AND SEEK YOU ADVICE ON THE MATTER. THANK YOU. *NM
1) APPROACHING A STOP SIGN AT 20 MPH. APPLIED BRAKES WITH 100 FT TO GO TO STOP SIGN. PAVEMENT DRY UNDER DRIVERS SIDE WHEELS. PAVEMENT LESS THAN 20% SNOW/ICE COVERED UNDER PASSEANGER WHEELS. TEMPERATURE 0 DEGREES F. 3:00 PM 2) I APPLIED THE BRAKES 100 FEET FROM THE STOP SIGN. THE ABS FIRED PREVENTING THE BRAKES FROM ENGAGING. TRANSMISSON DID DID NOT DISENGAGE. TRIED RELEASING BRAKES AND REAPPLYING, BUT ABS CONTINUED TO FIRE. PICKUP DID NOT SLOW AT ALL DUE TO TRANSMISSON CONTINUING TO BE ENGAGED AT THROTTLE IDLE. CAR AHEAD OF ME AT STOP SIGN WAS DAMAGED CONSIDERABLY IN RIGHT REAR QUATER. MY PICKUP RECEIVED MINOR DAMAGE TO FRONT. 3) CORRECTIVE ACTION NOT TAKEN YET. LOOKING INTO OPTIONS FOR REPLACEMENT OF ABS. RECALL EXISTS IN OTHER NORTHERN STATES FOR THIS DEFECT, BUT NOT IN MINNESOTA. *NM
DT: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE THERE WAS SEVERE VIBRATION . HE DROVE SLOWLY TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION WHILE THE VIBRATION WEAKENED AT A REDUCED SPEED. THE DEALER PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST THAT PRODUCED A CODE INVOLVING THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, THE EXTENSION HOUSING OF THE TRANSMISSION CRACKED AND WAS LEAKING TRANSMISSION OIL. NO REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED BY THE DEALER DUE TO THE EXTENSIVE WORK AND EXPENSE. THE CONTACT SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT WITH A TRANSMISSION SPECIALIST TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. *AK
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL THE VEHICLE VIBRATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP FOR INSPECTION. THE REPAIR PERSONNEL DETERMINED THE REAR ROTORS WERE DETERIORATED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY AT THE REPAIR SHOP AWAITING REPAIRS.
I PURCHASED NEW, A 2002 CHEVROLET 2500 HD CREW CAB 4X4 FROM ED MORSE SAWGRASS CHEVROLET. IN 2004, AFTER NOTICING SIGNS OF CRACKING ON THE SIDEWALLS AND AREA WHERE THE SIDEWALL MEETS THE TREADS ON ALL FOUR TIRES, I BROUGHT THE TRUCK TO MAROONE CHEVROLET SERVICE CENTER FOR INSPECTION. I EXPLAINED THAT I WAS CONCERNED THAT THE TIRES, HAVING APPROXIMATELY 24,000 MILES ON THEM, SHOULD NOT BE CRACKING THAT IT MIGHT BE DANGEROUS. THE SUPERVISOR INSPECTED THEM AND TOLD ME THAT IT WAS NORMAL AND I HAD NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT. I ASKED FOR SOMETHING IN WRITING AND HE REFUSED TO GIVE ME ANYTHING. AS A RESULT, IN DECEMBER 2005, WHILE RETURNING FROM VACATION WITH MY FAMILY, WITHOUT WARNING THERE WAS A SUDDEN LOUD NOISE FOLLOWED BY A SEVERE VIBRATION AND DIFFICULTY IN HANDLING. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OFF THE ROAD. UPON INSPECTION I FOUND THAT THE ENTIRE TREAD WAS MISSING FROM THE RIGHT REAR TIRE (FIRESTONE STEELTEX A/T). LUCKILY AT THAT TIME THE TIRE STILL HELD PRESSURE. HAD I NOT IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER, THE TIRE COULD HAVE BLOWN OUT AND THE RESULTS COULD HAVE BEEN DEVASTATING. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION WHEN I ARRIVED HOME, WHEN THE TREAD SEPARATED FROM THE TIRE IT DAMAGED THE SUPPORT BARS IN THE WHEEL WELL AND FOLDED UP THE FENDER BEHIND THE TIRE. AS THE OTHER THREE TIRES LOOK THE SAME, I AM CONCERNED FOR MY FAMILY'S SAFETY AND AM NOT DRIVING THE VEHICLE UNTIL I HAVE REPLACED ALL TIRES. I HAVE WRITTEN TO THE DEALERSHIP AND CONSUMER AFFAIRS AND HAVE NOT GOTTEN A RESPONSE FROM EITHER. *JB
I OWN A 2002 CHEVY SILVERADO K-1500 WITH 64,000 MILES. LAST WEEK I WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE AT 2-3 MPH, AND ALL OF A SUDDEN MY BRAKES FAILED ( PEDAL TO THE FLOOR) AND IT FELT LIKE THE TRUCK ACCELERATED (MY FOOT WAS OFF THE GAS PEDAL. I RAN INTO A BRICK WALL, CRACKING SOME PLASTIC ON THE FRONT BUMPER, AND DENTING THE BUMPER ITSELF. LUCKILY, I HIT THE BRICK WALL WITH THE FRONT TOW HOOK. THE NEXT DAY I TOOK MY TRUCK TO STANLEY CHEVROLET AND HAD THEM LOOK FOR ANY PROBLEMS. THE TRUCK WAS TAKEN THERE EARLIER IN THE FALL, TO CORRECT THE ABS RECALL. STANLEY, COULD NOT FIND ANY PROBLEM. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO SUBMIT THAT MY EMERGENCY BRAKE SYSTEM IS COMPLETELY WORN OUT. WHICH IS ODD SINCE I HAVE NEVER USED THEM. *NM
BOTH POWER WINDOW ASSEMBLIES FAILED WITHIN MONTHS OF EACH OTHER AND BOTH UNITS FAILED IN THE SAME MANNER. THERE IS A PLASTIC TO METAL CONNECTIONS THAT FAILED ON BOTH UNITS. THE PASSENGERS SIDE FAILED IN LATE SEPTEMBER 2005 AND THE DRIVERS SIDE DECEMBER 9, 2005. BOTH UNITS HAD TO BE REPLACED, OLD PARTS NOT AVAILABLE. *JB
GM RECALL NO. 05042 IS NOT LIMITED TO TRUCKS WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS. I HAVE TALKED TO OTHER OWNERS OF SILVERADO TRUCKS WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS WHO HAVE REPORTED PARKING BRAKE FAILURES. SERVICE BRAKES ARE NOT AFFECTED. *JB
DT: THE CONTACT RECEIVED NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN 05V379000 CONCERNING THE ABS BRAKES. UPON INSPECTION BY THE DEALER THE WHEEL SPEED SENSORS WERE IN EXCELLENT SHAPE. ALL FOUR ROTORS WERE COMPLETELY CORRODED, AND IN NEEDED REPLACEMENT. THE ROTORS WERE REPLACED AT THE CONTACT'S EXPENSE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THEY OFFERED A PARTIAL REIMBURSEMENT FOR YEARLY MAINTENANCE. *AK
DT: THE CONTACT STATED THE PASSENGER'S SIDE SEAT BELT WILL NOT BUCKLE. WHEN ATTACHING THE SEAT BELT INTO THE BUCKLE IT WAS NOT LATCHING. THE CONTACT CONSULTED A DEALERSHIP ABOUT THE PRICE OF INSTALLING A NEW BUCKLE. *AK UPDATED 12/27/2005 - WHILE MAKING A ABRUPT STOP ONE DAY THE SEAT BELT BECAME UNLATCHED AND HAS NOT WORKED SINCE. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE ABS ENGAGES AT LOW SPEEDS OF 20 MPH AND BELOW. AS A RESULT, THE STOPPING DISTANCE WAS INCREASED. THERE IS A NHTSA RECALL, # 05V379000, REGARDING THE ABS. THE VEHICLE HAS THE SAME PROBLEMS AS INDICATED IN THE RECALL; HOWEVER IT IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL BECAUSE OF THE VIN. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE DEALER CLEANED THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR, REPLACED THE PADS AND ROTORS. HOWEVER, THOSE REPLACEMENTS DID NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM. ADDITIONALLY, A KNOCKING NOISE WAS HEARD IN THE ENGINE. THE DEALER INSPECTED THE ENGINE ALTHOUGH, NO REPAIRS WERE MADE. THE PASSENGER SIE WINDOW WAS INOPERATIVE. UPDATED 03/28/06. *JB
(1) NO EVENTS NOTED LEADING UP TO THE FAILURE. NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS WERE IMPLEMENTED. PROPER MAINTENANCE AND INTERVALS WERE OBSERVED. WARRANTY HAD RECENTLY EXPIRED. MILEAGE AT TIME OF FAILURE WAS ~49,000 MILES. (2) TRANSMISSION FAILURE OCCURRED LEAVING FAMILY STRANDED IN MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC. AFTER TROUBLESHOOTING EFFORTS FROM 2 GARAGES, IT WAS DETERMINED THE SUN REACTION GEAR FAILED. THIS FAILURE HAS NO FOREWARNING AND IS DUE TO INFERIOR QUALITY OF MATERIALS/PARTS USED IN THE TRANSMISSION. THIS EVENT LEFT MY FAMILY STUCK IN TRAFFIC UNTIL, THROUGH TRIAL AND ERROR, IT WAS FOUND THAT 1 GEAR WAS LEFT SEMI-FUNCTIONAL. THE LACK OF REVERSE GEAR ALSO PUT MY FAMILY IN DANGER WHILE ATTEMPTING TO REACH A SAFE AREA, OUT OF TRAFFIC. GM IS AWARE OF THE ISSUE AS NOTED IN NUMEROUS FACTORY TECHNICAL BULLETINS AND CONVERSATIONS HAD BETWEEN MANUFACTURER CUSTOMER SERVICE AND MYSELF BUT ARE UNWILLING TO MAKE ANY STRIDES FOR CORRECTING THE ISSUE OR COMPENSATE FOR DAMAGES. (3) AT MY EXPENSE, THE REPAIR OPTIONS WERE TOTAL REPLACEMENT OF TOTAL REBUILD OF THE TRANSMISSION. WE OPTED TO TOTAL REBUILD FOR 2 REASONS; FIRST - THE REPLACEMENT WAS ONLY AVAILABLE FROM GM AND IT COULD NOT BE VERIFIED IF THE SAME ISSUE WOULD EXIST IN THE REPLACEMENT; SECOND - PROPER REBUILD EXPENSE WAS FOR COST EFFICIENT. THE ORIGINAL DEFECTIVE PART IS AVAILABLE. *JB
AT LOW SPEEDS, (BELOW 10 MPH) THE ANTILOCK BRAKING SYSTEM WILL ENGAGE (PULSING OF BRAKE PEDAL) ON MY 2002 1500 SILVERADO AND MAKE STOPPING DISTANCES DRAMATICALLY GREATER IN SLIPPERY CONDITIONS, EVEN IF ONLY ONE WHEEL IS ON A PATCH OF ICE/SNOW. THIS LEADS TO SCARY SITUATIONS AT STOP SIGNS/SEMIPHORES. I CONTACTED GM, AND THEY ADVISED ME THAT I LIVE IN A STATE (MN) THAT IS NOT COVERED BY THE RECALL. I WAS ADVISED THAT IF THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AT A DEALERSHIP, I MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR REIMBURSEMENT ON A CASE-BY-CASE BASIS. FOR NOW, I HAVE REMOVED THE ABS FUSE TO DISABLE THE ABS SYSTEM. I REALIZE THAT THE ABS WILL NOT WORK AT ALL, BUT AT LEAST I MY STOPPING POWER WILL BE PREDICTABLE. *NM
ON 2002 CHEVY SILVERADO 1500 W/ONLY 25,500 MILES, NOTICED A NOISE IN REAR BRAKES. WHEN ROTATING TIRES, DISCOVERED BOTH ROTORS WERE RUSTED AND CORRODED, BUT WITH PLENTY OF BRAKE PAD AND THEREBY CAUSING ABNORMAL WEAR ON BRAKE PADS. TOOK VEHICLE TO LOCAL GM DEALER FOR INSPECTION BY SERVICE PERSONNEL, WHO DETERMINED SAME PROBLEM, BUT WOULD NOT PROVIDE GOOD WILL REPAIR. FOR OBVIOUS SAFETY REASONS, PURCHASED REPLACEMENT ROTORS AND BRAKE PADS AND COMPLETED REPAIRS ON OUR OWN. WE HAVE CONTACTED GM TO TRY TO OBTAIN REFUND OF OUR COSTS, BUT NOT YET RESOLVED THE ISSUE. RESEARCH INDICATES THAT GM IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM WITH BRAKE ROTORS. ADDITIONALLY THE VEHICLE STILL EXPERIENCES PROBLEM W/ABS SPEED SENSOR REQUIRING ADDITIONAL BRAKING DISTANCE AT SLOW SPEEDS, BUT WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE FIRST RECALL BY GM. PREVIOUSLY REPORTED THIS COMPLAINT. *JB
