RUSTED BRAKE LINES CAUSED A NEAR ACCIDENT WHEN THE LINE BROKE, RESULTING IN LOSS OF BRAKING ABILITIES. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BRAKES FAILED AFTER RECENTLY BEING REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE SAME ISSUE HAPPENED PREVIOUSLY AND THE BRAKE LINES WERE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 50,000.
HERCULES TIRES 26575R 116 OWL HERCULES TERRA TRAC A/T 11 WORE OUT WITH ONLY 3800 MILES NOT ONLY ONCE BUT TWICE DEALER SAID I IT WAS BAD DRIVING NEVE IN MY 56 YRS DID I HAVE A TIRE WEAR THIS FAST THEY ARE DEATH TRAPS KOST TIRE CHARGE ROAD HAZARD WHEN IT ALL READY CAME WITH THE TIRE AND DID NOTHING TO RECTIFY THE PROBLEM CAN YOU HELP ME ON THIS PLEASE. *TR
ON TRIP HOME FROM A VACATION. PULLING A 28 FT FIFTH WHEEL CAMPER AND A MOTORCYCLE TRAILER. ON INTERSTATE 65 NORTH BOUND WHEN AN OLDER GENTLEMAN MERGING INTO TRAFFIC THOUGHT IT WAS A GOOD IDEA TO COME TO ALMOST A COMPLETE STOP TO LET OTHER VEHICLE MERGE IN FRONT OF HIM. AT WHICH POINT I HAD TO LOCK THE BRAKES AND JUST AFTER THE ABS STARTED TO COME INTO EFFECT THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. LUCKILY JUST BEFORE I WAS GOING TO IMPACT THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME HE PULLED AWAY. I TOOK THE NEXT EXIT OFF THE INTERSTATE PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE EXIT RAMP TO DISCOVER BRAKE FLUID DRIPPING ON THE GROUND JUST FORWARD OF THE DRIVERS DOOR. INSPECTED THE BRAKE FLUID LEVEL TO DISCOVER IT WAS EMPTY. ALL BRAKE LINES ON THIS VEHICLE WILL HAVE TO REPLACED AT AN ESTIMATED COST FROM A DEALER AT $1500.00. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND SHOULD BE IN A RECALL STATUS. *TR
BRAKE LINE RUPTURED WHILE PULLING INTO PARKING SPACE ALMOST STRIKING ANOTHER PARKED CAR. REMAINING BRAKE LINES ARE VERY RUSTED AND WILL NEED REPLACED. *JS
BRAKE LINES WERE HEAVILY CORRODED AND FAILED. NO WARNING SIGNS TO MAKE THIS PROBLEM IDENTIFIABLE OR EXPECTED. THE TRUCK WAS IMMEDIATELY UNSAFE TO DRIVE. BOTH THE FRONT AND REAR LINES BETWEEN THE MASTER CYLINDER AND ABS MODULE FAILED, CAUSING THE TRUCK TO HAVE NO BRAKING POWER WHATSOEVER. *TR
SAME STORY AS EVERY OTHER 99+ SILVERADO: THE BRAKE LINE BURST BEHIND CAB AND ALL BRAKE PRESSURE WAS LOST. BRAKE SYSTEM DEFECTS ARE FAR MORE DANGEROUS THAN A FAULTY IGNITION SWITCH. WHY ARE GM AND NHTSA IGNORING THESE COMPLAINTS? *TR
WENT BACK UP TO A BOAT TRAILER PEDAL WENT ALL WAY TO THE FLOOR! HAD NO BRAKES PUMP PEDAL TO HAVE ANY BRAKES WENT TO REPAIR SHOW HAD USE EMERGENCY BRAKE AND PUMP BRAKE PEDAL HOLIDAY WEEK LUCKY SOMEBODY HAD PARTS ALSO GET USE IN! ALSO PULLED A 5TH WHEEL WEIGHT OF AROUND 8,900PDS BEFORE THAT LUCKY I WASN'T TOWING IT THREW BROWN COUNTY AND MONROE RES IN INDIANA ARE IT WOULD KILLED ME AND MY FAMILY COULD NOT KEEP IT SLOWED DOWN HAVE USE MY TRAILER BRAKE ON THE 5TH WHEEL IF THAT COULD EVEN STOP USE! *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500 HD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM LIGHT ILLUMINATED FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. THE CONTACT HAD TO RESTART THE VEHICLE TO RESET THE COMPUTER, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR NEEDED TO BE CLEANED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 05V379000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 140,000.
WAS TRYING TO SLOW DOWN WHILE COMING OVER A HILL TO A KNOWN STOP LIGHT. APPLIED BRAKES AND BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. NO BRAKES. NO WARNING LIGHT, NO OTHER INDICATOR. WAS ABLE TO COME TO A STOP ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITHOUT HITTING ANYONE. PUDDLE OF BRAKE FLUID COULD BE FOUND UNDER THE TRUCK. HAD TO REPLACE ALL THE BRAKE LINES AS THEY HAD RUSTED OUT TOTALLY. LUCKY NO ONE WAS HURT, BUT IF I HAD BEEN CLOSER INTO THE CITY IT WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN PRETTY. *TR

WHILE SLOWING DOWN AT A STOP LIGHT AT APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH, THE BRAKE PEDAL FAILED TO RESPOND AND THE CONTACT HAD TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES TO STOP THE VEHICLE. ONCE THE VEHICLE STOPPED, THE ABS AND BRAKE WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS RECENTLY REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 05V379000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC). THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. HOWEVER, THE BRAKES WERE REPLACED AND THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE FAILURE RECURRED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. ON MY 2002 SILVERADO, THE ABS ACTIVATES AT LOW SPEEDS CAUSING BRAKES TO PULSE AND INCREASE STOPPING DISTANCE. CLEARLY NHTSA REFERENCE #05V379000 STATES THAT THIS ONLY AFFECTS CERTAIN STATES. MY VEHICLE FALLS INTO THE MANUFACTURER'S RECALL DATE RANGE AS IT WAS MANUFACTURED IN AUGUST 2001. CHEVROLET REFUSES TO FIX THIS ISSUE UNDER A RECALL AND ARE TELLING ME THAT THEY DO NOT ISSUE RECALLS THAT ARE STATE SPECIFIC AND THAT MY VEHICLE DOES NOT QUALIFY. NEEDING HELP GETTING THIS ISSUE RESOLVED. *TR

EXPERIENCED TIRE SEPARATION AT 70MPH OF A FIRESTONE STEELTEX RADIAL A/T LT245/75R16 LOAD RANGE E M/S. TIRE SEPARATION DAMAGED THE RIGHT REAR QUARTER PANEL AND FORWARD REAR QUARTER PANEL. TOOK THE TRUCK TO A TIRE STORE TO HAVE THE OTHER TIRES INSPECTED. THE REMAINING TIRES WHERE ALL FOUND TO BE SEPARATING. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE BRAKE PEDAL TRAVELED TO THE FLOOR WHEN DEPRESSED. THE VEHICLE FAILED TO STOP UNTIL THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS ENGAGED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO INFORMED THAT THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE BRAKE LINE FRACTURED DUE TO EXCESSIVE CORROSION. THE FOUR BRAKE LINES WERE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 104,685. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. UPDATED 08/12/14*LJ UPDATED 07/06/2017 *CT
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE, THE DRIVER SIDE SEAT BELT WOULD SUDDENLY RETRACT AND PREVENT THE CONTACT FROM MOVING. ALSO, THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT THE IGNITION KEY BECAME LODGED IN THE IGNITION SWITCH AND COULD NOT BE REMOVED. IN ADDITION, THE ABS SENSOR LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE ABS PUMP MOTOR WAS DEFECTIVE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 168,000.
AFTER EXITING THE OFF RAMP OF I264 IN PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA I SPED UP TO APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH AND APPROACHED THE NEXT STOP LIGHT. UPON APPLYING PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL NO RESISTANCE WAS NOTED AND THE SLOWING OF THE VEHICLE WAS FOUND NEGLIGIBLE. I REAR ENDED A VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME AT APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH. BOTH CARS INVOLVED IN THE ACCIDENT WERE PULLED INTO THE MEDIAN OUT OF TRAFFIC. AS I EXITED THE VEHICLE I NOTICED FLUID DRIPPING FROM THE TRUCK FRAME AT THE FORWARD HINGE OF THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR. THE DRIPPING FLUID WAS BRAKE FLUID. I SUSPECT A RUPTURED BRAKE FLUID LINE OR TUBE HAD RUPTURED WHICH CAUSED THE LOSS OF BRAKING POWER. THERE WAS NO WARNING GIVEN BY THE VEHICLE'S COMPUTER TO WARN OF LOW BRAKE FLUID BECAUSE THE RESERVOIR WAS STILL AT THE NORMAL LEVEL. I BELIEVE CORROSION OF THE BRAKE LINES WAS ACCELERATED DUE TO THE USE OF SALT TREATMENTS ON THE ROADS DURING THE WINTER SNOW STORMS THAT HAVE FALLEN IN THE PAST THREE YEARS. LUCKILY NOBODY WAS SERIOUSLY HURT AND LUCKILY THIS DID NOT HAPPEN WHEN I WAS EXITING THE INTERSTATE AT A MUCH HIGHER RATE OF SPEED. ALSO THE AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY UPON IMPACT. THESE ARE TWO SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUES INCURRED IN ONCE INCIDENT TO A TRUCK WHICH HAS LESS THAN 70K MILES AND 12 YEARS OLD. *TR
MY BRAKE LINES FAILED, NEARLY RESULTING IN KILLING A CHILD THAT RODE HIS BIKE ONTO THE ROAD FROM A DRIVEWAY AND FORCING A VEHICLE HEADON INTO MY LANE OF TRAVEL. LUCKLY EVERYONE WAS ABLE TO SQUEEZE INTO APPROPRIATE PLACES AND WAS PAYING ATTENTION AS I WAS UNABLE TO SLOWDOWN. DUST COVERS ON THE REAR HAVE BEEN RUSTED AND GONE FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS, AND I HAVE REPLACED THE REGULATORS IN BOTH PASSENGER/DRIVERSIDE DOORS THREE TIME EACH DUE TO THE CABLES RUSTING AND SNAPPING. WHEN I TOOK MY VEHICLE INTO CHEVROLET DEALER SHIP FOR MAINTENANCE, IT HAD LESS THAN 36K AT THE TIME, THEY REMOVED ONE PLASTIC PANEL (FALLING DOWN FROM BEHIND THE DOOR INTERIOR TRIM PANELS) FROM EACH DOOR THAT WAS HANGING DOWN AND SCRATCHING MY ROCKER PANEL, AND SAID "WE DONT KNOW WHAT THESE ARE FOR, SO WE JUST REMOVED THEM", HMMM, MAYBE IT WAS TO HELP WITH MOITURE RELATED ISSUES WITHIN THE DOOR PANEL. NOT SURE JUST GUESSING, BUT CANT BELLIVE THAT THEY COULDN'T FIGURE IT OUT. OVER ALL NOT IMPRESSED WITH CHEVROLET EVEN THOUGH IT IS PRETTY MUCH ALL I HAVE OWNED, IF THEY KEEP PRODUCING THIS CRAP THEY SHOULD LOWER THE PRICE.

I WAS APPROACHING A STOP LIGHT AT A SPEED OF ABOUT 25 MPH AND STEPPED ON MY BRAKES TO BEGIN SLOWING DOWN. THE PEDAL WENT COMPLETELY TO THE FLOOR AND I FELT NO BRAKING. LUCKILY, I DID NOT NEED TO STOP IMMEDIATELY, AND THERE WAS NO CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I BEGAN PUMPING THE BRAKES AND JUST HOLDING THE PEDAL DOWN TO THE FLOOR AND THERE WAS SLIGHTLY ENOUGH BRAKE ACTION TO ALLOW ME TO SLOW DOWN A BIT AND PULL OFF THE ROAD AND INTO THE PARKING LOT OF A SERVICE STATION. I GOT OUT OF THE TRUCK AND COULD SEE THE TRAIL OF BRAKE FLUID I HAD LEFT BEHIND ON THE PARKING LOT AND COULD SEE BRAKE FLUID DRIPPING FROM THE BRAKE LINE ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE TRUCK APPROXIMATELY UNDERNEATH THE FRAME BELOW THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR. THE SERVICE STATION HAS TOLD ME THAT ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES ARE CORRODED AND NEED TO BE REPLACED. IF I HAD NEEDED TO STOP SUDDENLY I WOULD HAVE CRASHED FOR SURE AS I HAD NO WARNING WHATSOEVER THAT THIS WOULD HAPPEN. VERY SCARY. *TR
18 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER CAME HOME COMPLAINING THAT BRAKES WENT TO FLOOR. FOUND HOLE IN RUSTED BRAKE LINE BY THE REAR CONNECTOR. *TR
AS I APPROACHED A STOP SIGN AFTER TRAVELING ABOUT 30 MPH AND SLOWING DOWN FOR THE STOP SIGN I PRESS THE BRAKES AND IT WENT TO THE FLOOR AND PRESS THEM A SECOND TIME AND POSSIBLE A THIRD BEFORE CROSSING TRAFFIC AND FAILING TO STOP. I MISS HITTING A CAR BY INCHES. THIS WAS ALL ON AN UPHILL INCLINE. I CROSS TRAFFIC AND WAS ABLE TO STOP IN A CHURCH PARKING LOT BY USING THE PARKING BRAKE. AFTER ABOUT THE FIFTH TIME APPLYING THE BRAKES THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT COME ON. NO WARNING UNTIL THEN. AFTER INSPECTION THE BRAKE LINE NEXT TO THE DRIVERS SIDE HAD RUPTURE. THE LINE LET A TRAIL OF BRAKE FLUID FOR ABOUT 200 YARDS. THE BRAKE FLUID WAS CHECKED AT OIL CHANGE SERVICE FOUR DAYS PRIOR AND WAS FULL. NOW IT IS EMPTY. THIS IS A MAJOR FAILURE THAT SHOULD BE CORRECTED BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED. I THOUGH THAT THERE WAS A SECONDARY SYSTEM TO STOP IF ONE HALF OF THE SYSTEM FAILED. APPARENTLY NOT!!!!! *TR
ON MAY 9, 2014 I WAS BACKING UP TO HOOK UP TO A TRAILER WITH MY TRUCK. WITH ABSOLUTELY NO WARNING SIGN OR INDICATION, MY BRAKE LINE BUSTED AND I HAD NO BRAKES WHATSOEVER. THE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. EVEN AT THIS SLOW OF SPEED IN REVERSE I COULD NOT STOP AND RAN DIRECTLY INTO THE TRAILER. MY WIFE WAS STANDING AT THE TRAILER DIRECTING ME AND LUCKILY DID NOT GET HURT BECAUSE OF THIS BRAKE FAILURE. I HAD TO USE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO GET STOPPED, AND EVEN THAT WAS VERY SLUGGISH TO STOP THE TRUCK. I AM NOW FINDING OUT THAT THIS IS COMMON ISSUE WITH THESE VEHICLE AND THERE IS AN OPEN INVESTIGATION INTO THIS MATTER. GM NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS AS THE IMMEDIATE FAILURE OF THE BRAKES WITH NO WARNING IS SURE TO CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH SHOULD IT HAPPEN WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. *JS
I WAS DRIVING HOME IN MY 2002 SILVERADO 2500 HD, WHEN I CAN TO A STOP AT THE STOP SIGN, MY BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND I COULD NOT STOP. MY TRUCK WENT THROUGH THE INTERSECTION, BUT LUCKILY THERE WAS NO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. I BROUGHT MY TRUCK TO A LOCAL AUTO REPAIR SHOP, WHERE THEY REPLACED JUST FAULTY BRAKE LINES DUE TO THEM RUSTING OUT PREMATURELY. MY REPAIR BILL WAS OVER $1500 DOLLARS. *TR
WHILE BACKING DOWN DRIVEWAY THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT COMPLETELY TO THE FLOOR WITH TOTAL BRAKE FAILURE. EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS USED TO STOP VEHICLE. UPON INSPECTION, TWO BRAKE LINES HAD RUSTED TO THE POINT OF FAILURE AND ALL BRAKE FLUID WAS ON THE GROUND. MY 1987 F-250 DOES NOT HAVE BRAKE LINES THIS RUSTED. I AM GLAD I WAS NOT IN CITY DRIVING WHEN THIS OCCURRED. I WILL HAVE VEHICLE TOWED TO DEALERSHIP TO HAVE ALL BRAKE LINES REPLACED. *TR
STARTED TO LEAVE HOUSE TO GO GROCERY SHOPPING, STARTED VEHICLE APPLIED BRAKE TO OUT AUTO INTO GEAR, BRAKES PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR, CHECK FLUID LEVEL WAS O.K. RECHECK BRAKING, SAME RESULT, NO BRAKES. AFTER CHECKING NOTICE SIGNS OF BRAKE FLUID AT AREAS BENEATH VEHICLE AT DRIVER DOOR. CALLED FOR TOW TRUCK THE FOLLOWING MORNING. IF I HAD GOTTEN TO HYWY. US 1. AND THIS PROBLEM HAPPEN, I FEAR THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT INVOLVING MYSELF, OR OTHERS. WAITING FOR WORD FROM AUTO SHOP OF WHAT THE PROBLEM COULD BE. THIS IS VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE WITH THIS AND OTHER TRUCKS. *JS

I WAS DRIVING AND WHEN I WENT TO STOP THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND THE TRUCK TOOK A LONG TIME TO STOP. THE BRAKE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY RUSTED BRAKE LINES WHICH ALLOWED THE BRAKE FLUID TO LEAK OUT. ONE LINE WAS RUSTED ALL THE WAY THROUGH AND SEVERAL OTHER WERE BADLY RUSTED. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BUT THE REPAIR SPECIFICS WERE UNKNOWN AND THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 137,000.

ON 2 SEPARATE OCCASIONS, THE VEHICLE WOULD SHUT OFF BRIEFLY AND THEN COME BACK ON. THERE WERE TIMES, WHEN HE TRIED TO START THE VEHICLE, IT WOULD TURN OVER, BUT IT WOULDN'T START.

NOT ONLY THE BRAKE LINES HAVE EXCESSIVE RUST BUT THE GAS LINES, ROCKER PANELS AND COMPLETE UNDERSIDE SHOW THE SAME. I HAVE A 2002 SILVERADO 2500HD WITH VERY LOW MILES(63,868), EXTREMELY WELL TAKEN CARE OF VEHICLE. MY PROBLEM OCCURRED, FORTUNATELY FOR ME, WHILE I WAS SITTING AT A STOPLIGHT. AS I SAT WAITING FOR THE LIGHT TO TURN GREEN, MY BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. I WASN'T SURE WHAT HAPPENED AND THOUGHT MAYBE I'D PUMP MY BRAKES UP AND EVERYTHING WOULD BE FINE. NO SUCH LUCK. I PULLED OVER INTO A GAS STATION AND LOOKED UNDER MY TRUCK AND SAW MY FLUID LEAKING VERY BADLY, COMING DOWN OVER MY GAS TANK. SINCE I HAD JUST LEFT MY HOME AND WAS VERY CLOSE, I DECIDED TO DRIVE IT HOME AND HAVE A BETTER LOOK. AS I DROVE THE HALF MILE DRIVE, MY BRAKE FLUID COMPLETELY DRAINED DRY. FORTUNATELY FOR ME, THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC ON THE STREETS AND NO OBSTACLES IN THE WAY. ANYWAY, WHEN I GOT HOME AND LOOKED UNDER MY TRUCK AND SAW THAT MY BRAKELINE LOOKED LIKE IT COMPLETELY EXPLODED AND WAS RUSTED OUT, I CALLED MY DEALER AND ASKED IF THERE WAS A SAFETY RECALL FOR THESE BRAKE LINES, AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THERE NEVER HAS BEEN. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT FOR THEM TO REPAIR MY BRAKELINE, SO I HAD MY TRUCK TOWED TO MY DEALER, AND THEY PRECEDED TO WORK ON MY TRUCK. AS THEY INSPECTED IT, I WAS INFORMED THAT "ALL" OF MY LINES WERE RUSTED OUT BADLY AND UNSAFE. THIS COST ME APPROXIMATELY $700 TO REPAIR ALL OF THE LINES, BUT MY BIGGEST CONCERN IS THAT THIS COULD HAVE TURNED OUT A LOT DIFFERENTLY. WE HAVE 8 CHILDREN, 12 GRAND CHILDREN, AND FORTUNATELY THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT ON THE HIGHWAY WITH ANY OF THE LITTLE ONES IN IT. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING FOR OVER 30 YEARS AND I FEEL VERY FORTUNATE THAT CIRCUMSTANCES WERE WHAT THEY WERE. AT APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH COOLANT LOSS FROM A CRACKED CYLINDER HEAD SENT A SIGNAL TO THE ECM TO SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE WHICH CAUSED THE LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND CONTROL. WEATHER CONDITIONS WERE SNOW AND WIND AND I WAS FOLLOWING TWO DRY TRACKS IN THE ROAD, UPON LOSS OF POWER THE TRUCK DRIFTED ONTO AN AREA OF ROAD COVERED IN SNOW WHICH NEARLY CARRIED ME OFF INTO A DITCH. ON A DRY DAY IF THIS HAD OCCURRED INERTIA WOULD HAVE TAKEN ME ON TO A SOFT SHOULDER SO IN THIS INSTANCE THE COLD WEATHER AND SNOW ACTUALLY HELPED THE TRUCK FROM DRIFTING TOO FAR OFF THE ROAD. ONCE DISABLED ALONG SIDE THE ROAD THE WEATHER BEGAN TO DETERIORATE TO NEAR WHITE OUT CONDITIONS, THANKFULLY ANOTHER DRIVER PULLED UP BEHIND ME ABOUT 50 YARDS BACK AND USED HIS FLASHERS TO WARN ON COMING DRIVERS. AFTER THE TRUCK COOLED A BIT IT RE-STARTED AND I TOOK FOR SERVICE. A MECHANIC NOTICED A CRACKED CYLINDER HEAD AS THE CULPRIT. I HAVE COME TO LEARN THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES. MY WIFE WILL OCCASIONALLY DRIVE THIS TRUCK AND IT COULD HAVE BEEN A DIFFERENT SITUATION IF SHE COULD NOT HAVE MUSCLED THE UNASSISTED STEERING TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. IT IS MY BELIEF THAT ANY CONDITION THAT WILL SHUT DOWN AN ENGINE UNDER FULL POWER SHOULD BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE MANUFACTURER TO FIX. *TR
