WIFE WAS DRIVING ON 301 SOUTH IN MARYLAND ON 10\27\2012 WHEN SHE APPLIED THE BRAKES WHEN PULLING OVER TO GET GAS. PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND BRAKE FLUID WAS VISIBLE ON GROUND BY THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR. SHE HAD TO LEAVE IT AT THE GAS STATION UNTIL I WAS ABLE TO REPAIR. BRAKE LINE WAS RUSTED THROUGH I REPLACED IT AND GOT TRUCK HOME. REPLACED 2ND BRAKE LINE ON 11/08/15. NOW 07/10/2015 ANOTHER LINE HAS RUSTED THROUGH IN THE PROCESS OF REPLACING THE REMAINING LINES.
I WAS BACKING MY BOAT INTO TO BOAT RAMP TO GO FISHING AND WHEN I PUSHED THE BRAKE TO STOP THE PEDAL WENT STRAIGHT TO THE FLOOR WITH NO WARNING WHAT SO EVER. I HAD TO HIT THE EMERGENCY BRAKE PEDAL TO GET STOPPED. UPON LOOKING UNDER THE TRUCK TO SEARCH FOR A PROBLEM I FOUND THAT THE BRAKE LINE BY THE DRIVERS DOOR HAD RUPTURED CAUSING A MAJOR BRAKE FAILURE. HAD I BEEN ON THE ROAD WHEN THIS HAPPENED THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN AN ACCIDENT . *TR
I WAS STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT AND THE SERVICE BRAKE PEDAL LIGHT WENT TO THE FLOOR AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO ROLL. THERE WAS NO WARNING SIGNS OF AN ISSUE AT THIS POINT. DUE TO THE LIGHT TURNING GREEN I WAS ABLE TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT WITH THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OFF MINE AT THE TRAFFIC LIGHT. I PROCEED TO A SAFE LOCATION CAREFULLY TESTING THE BRAKES AND NOTICED THE PEDAL TO BE SOFT. I PULLED INTO A AREA QUICKLY AND THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AGAIN AND WAS ABLE TO PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK BEFORE THE VEHICLE MOVED MORE THAN A FOOT OR TWO. I OPENED THE HOOD AND THE FLUID WAS ABOVE THE MIN MARK ON THE RESERVOIR THEN NOTICED FLUID ON THE GROUND UNDER THE CAB. THE BRAKE LINES APPEARED TO BE LEAKING AND SEVERELY CORRRODED WITH HOLES IN THE LINES FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT TO THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. *TR
WE ARE THE SECOND OWNERS OF A 2004 CHEVY SILVERADO 1500 4WD TRUCK. WE HAVE HAD BRAKE LINES GO TWICE. THE LAST TIME WAS AT OUR TOWN DUMP. MY HUSBAND WAS STOPPED WITH THE TRUCK IN PARK AND WHEN HE PUT HIS FOOT ON THE BRAKE TO PUT THE TRUCK IN GEAR THE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR WITH NO REAL STOPPING POWER. HE CHECKED THE EMERGENCY PARKING BRAKE AND THAT, TOO, WAS NOT FUNCTIONING. IT DOESN'T SEEM RIGHT THAT CHEVY HAS BEEN ABLE TO USE SUCH DANGEROUS ENGINEERING ON SOMETHING AS IMPORTANT AS BRAKES. WE ALSO HAVE RUSTED TRANSMISSION LINES AND BACKER PLATES. IT IS GOING TO COST $2,000 (TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS) TO FIX THESE PROBLEMS. WE ARE REQUESTING THAT A RECALL BE MADE FOR THIS DEFECTIVE MANUFACTURING ON SUCH A NECESSARY FUNCTION. WE ARE LUCKY THAT WE WERE IN PARK AND PUTTING THE TRUCK INTO GEAR FROM PARK WHEN THE BRAKES FAILED. *TR
WHEN TO STOP AT RED LIGHT BRAKES FAIL COULD NOT STOP. I USED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO FINALLY STOP AFTER I WHEN THREW THE RED LIGHT. IT IS A GOOD THING THEIR WAS ANY COMING THE OTHER WAY. THE BRAKE PEDAL WHEN THE WHOLE WAY TO THE FLOOR. I HAD ALL BRAKE LINES REPAIRED AND THE RUBBER HOSES TOO. THE METAL LINE WHERE RUSTED OUT. *TR
BOUGHT THE TRUCK NEW. AT 112,160 MILES THE BRAKE LINES FAILED CAUSING THE PEDAL TO GO COMPLETELY TO THE FLOOR WHILE PUTTING THE TRUCK INTO "DRIVE". I QUICKLY PUT THE TRANSMISSION INTO "REVERSE" TO GET THE TRUCK STOPPED. BRAKE LINES CORRODED. *TR
AFTER TOWING MY TRAILER TO MY SONS AND BACKING IT INTO THE BARN THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AS I PULLED OUT. I HAD JUST WENT ABOUT 5 MILES AT ABOUT 50MPH WITH A 20 FOOT TRAILER. LUCKILY THE BRAKE LINE DIDN'T LET GO ON THE MAJOR ROAD I WAS ON. THE BRAKE FLUID WAS RUNNING OUT OF A RUSTED BRAKE LINE UNDER THE CAB. THIS TRUCK HAS 58,000 MILES ON IT AND IS KEPT IN A GARAGE IN THE WINTER. AFTER INSPECTING THE UNDERSIDE OF THE TRUCK I AM QUITE SURPRISED AT THE AMOUNT OF RUST ON THE FRAME AND SUSPENSION PARTS. THE UNDERSIDE OF THE FLOOR LOOKS LIKE NEW BUT THE BRAKE LINES LOOK ABOUT 50 YEARS OLD. I HAVE A HARD TIME BELIEVING THE GOVERNMENT WOULD LEAVE A SAFETY ISSUE JUST CONTINUE ON OUR HIGHWAYS. WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO GET THIS PROBLEM ADDRESSED AND SAVE LIVES. *TR
FIRST INCIDENT: UPON LEAVING WORK, I MERGED ONTO THE HIGHWAY, TRAVELED AROUND THE CIRCLE, STOPPED, CROSSED ONTO ANOTHER HIGHWAY, STOPPED AGAIN, ACCELERATED NORMALLY, REACHED APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH AND HAD TO HIT THE BRAKES HARD TO STOP BECAUSE OF TRAFFIC IN FRONT OF ME STOPPING SHORT. THE NEXT TIME I DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL, IT TRAVELED NEARLY TO THE FLOOR. THE LINE FROM THE ABS UNIT TO THE REAR BRAKES HAD CRACKED. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE TO MY GARAGE WHERE I REMOVED(AND SAVED) AND REPLACED THE LINE. SECOND INCIDENT: TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 19TH. ON MY WAY TO WORK, NORMAL DRIVING AND BRAKING, APPROACHING A TRAFFIC LIGHT, LIGHT CHANGED TO YELLOW, I WAS GOING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, DEPRESSED BRAKE PEDAL, PEDAL CONTINUED TO TRAVEL AND I WAS ABLE TO STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION AFTER THE LIGHT HAD TURNED RED. NO ACCIDENT OR INJURY. I WILL MOST LIKELY RECEIVE A TICKET AS THE LIGHT HAS A CAMERA THAT PHOTOGRAPHS ANYONE RUNNING THE LIGHT AND SENDS THEM A TICKET IN THE MAIL. THIS TIME, A LINE GOING TO THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT CALIPER BROKE. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE BACK TO MY GARAGE WHERE I CUT OUT AND BEGAN THE DIFFICULT TASK OF REPLACING THIS LINE. I ALSO NOTICED THE LINE GOING TO THE DRIVER SIDE FRONT CALIPER WAS EQUALLY RUSTED, BUT HAD NOT BROKEN YET. IT IS NOW THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21ST. I HAVE MISSED 3 DAYS OF WORK AND NOW I WILL HAVE TO HAVE MY TRUCK TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP I WORK AT WHERE I WILL MOST LIKELY HAVE TO REMOVE THE BODY OF THE TRUCK FROM THE FRAME TO PROPERLY INSTALL NEW BRAKE LINES TO THE FRONT CALIPERS. I HAVE SAVED THE OLD BRAKE LINES AS EVIDENCE. THEY LOOK MORE LIKE ROTTEN TWIGS THAN THEY LOOK LIKE STEEL BRAKE LINES. IT'S DISGRACEFUL THAT A VEHICLE ONLY 9 YEARS OLD WOULD NEED ALL NEW BRAKE LINES WHEN I HAVE HAD SEVERAL OLD VEHICLES FROM THE 70'S AND 80'S WHICH HAD ORIGINAL BRAKE LINES THAT DID NOT BREAK. ONLY SURFACE RUST APPEARED ON THEM. *TR
TRANSMISSION WENT OUT WHILE DRIVING. *TR
WHILE EXITING INTERSTATE 89 IN SWANTON VERMONT, I APPLIED THE BRAKES AND THE PEDAL WENT COMPLETELY TO THE FLOOR WITH NEARLY NO BRAKING OCCURRING. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS OR PREVIOUS PROBLEMS. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A REPAIR FACILITY. AN INSPECTION REVEALED THE BRAKE LINE BURST VERY CLOSE TO THE MASTER CYLINDER. THE INSPECTION ALSO REVEALED THE ENTIRE BRAKE-LINES WERE RUSTED AND CORRODED BEYOND ANY NORMAL WEAR. THE REPAIRMAN STATED THAT HE HAS SEEN THIS ON A NUMBER OF SILVERADO'S AND THAT THEIR IS OBVIOUS PROBLEMS WITH THE QUALITY OF THE LINES. THIS VEHICLE IS GARAGE KEPT AND SHOWS NO BODY WEAR OR ENGINE WEAR. *TR
VARIOUS GAUGES INTERMITTENTLY FAIL. TACHOMETER READS CORRECTLY ONLY PART TIME. AMPMETER DOES NOT WORK. SPEEDOMETER EITHER READS INCORRECTLY OR NOT AT ALL. ETC. ENTIRE INSTRUMENT PANEL NEEDS TO BE REPLACED TO SAFELY OPERATE THIS VEHICLE. WE WERE NEVER INFORMED OF A RECALL ON THIS UNIT, MECHANIC BELIEVES THAT ONE MAY HAVE BEEN MADE. THIS VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER--A CHEVROLET DEALER--EARLY IN OUR OWNERSHIP--A NEW VEHICLE--WITH A REQUEST TO INVESTIGATE THE CLUSTER. WE WERE INFORMED THEY KNEW OF NO PROBLEMS AND SAID THE UNIT WAS GOOD. *TR

THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED CONTINUOUSLY. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED BACK INJURIES THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO YOUNG CHEVROLET (9301 E R L THORNTON FWY, DALLAS, TX 75228, (469) 378-9186), BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH THE SPEED ODOMETER FAILED TO OPERATE. THE MALFUNCTION RECURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSIS. THERE WAS A RECALL ISSUED BY THE MANUFACTURER PERTAINING TO THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM; HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. IN ADDITION, THE GEAR LEVER WOULD NOT SHIFT INTO THE FOUR WHEEL DRIVE POSITION. THE HEATER BLOWER FUNCTIONED IN ONLY TWO OF THE FIVE SETTINGS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 93,000. ...UPDATED 07-10-13 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED A MECHANIC ADVISED THE FAILURES WERE ELECTRICAL ISSUES. PUT FOOT ON BRAKE PEDAL TO START VEHICLE AND THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. THE BRAKE SYSTEM WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. PUMPED PEDAL AND THERE WAS LITTLE INCREASE IN PRESSURE. TURNED OFF VEHICLE AND STARTING VISUAL INSPECTION OF THE BRAKE COMPONENTS. FLUID CHAMBER WAS FULL AND CLEAN. ABS MODULE WAS CLEAN AND ALL WIRES IN PLACE. THE BRAKE LINE ABOVE THE LEFT REAR FRAME RAIL HAD A SEVERE HOLE AND FLUID RUNNING OUT. LINES AND FITTINGS IN OTHER AREAS ARE ALSO CORRODED BUT NO LEAKS READILY IDENTIFIED. *TR
I WAS DRIVING FROM THE BOAT LAUNCH TO PARK MY 2004 CHEVY SILVERADO 2500HD WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. I PUMPED THE BRAKES AS I SLOWLY APPROACHED MY PARKING SPOT, HOWEVER, I COULD NOT GET ANY PRESSURE TO BUILD UP IN THE SYSTEM. WITH NO ACTION ON THE BRAKE CALIPERS, I USED MY PARKING BRAKE TO STOP AS I ENTERED MY PARKING SPOT. THERE WAS NO WARNING OR INDICATOR LIGHT ALERTING ME TO ANY BRAKE PROBLEMS. AFTER PARKING I NOTICED A LEAKING BRAKE LINE UNDER THE DRIVER'S SIDE NEAR THE ABS BRAKE MODULE. I MADE A TEMPORARY REPAIR, ATTEMPTED TO BLEED AND PUMP UP THE BRAKES WHICH RESULTED IN THE REAR BRAKE LINE BLOWING OUT RIGHT AT THE HOSE CONNECTION. STILL NO WARNING OR INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON TO ALERT ME TO ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKE SYSTEM. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED HOME AND AS WE WERE TAKING MY VEHICLE OFF THE TRUCK, THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT FINALLY CAME ON AND THE ELECTRONIC DASH DISPLAYED THE MESSAGE "SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM". THE LACK OF FLUID IN THE BRAKE RESERVOIR MUST HAVE TRIGGERED THE SENSOR THERE. UPON CLOSER INSPECTION, I NOTICED THAT THE BRAKE LINE FAILED INSIDE A PLASTIC BRAKE LINE RETAINING CLIP LOCATED ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE FRAME JUST BEFORE IT WAS ROUTED OVER TO THE ABS MODULATOR VALVE UNDER THE VEHICLE ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE ON THE INSIDE OF THE FRAME. I REPLACED ALL THE BRAKE LINES WITH PRE-BENT STAINLESS STEEL LINES FROM CLASSICTUBE.COM. I AM ONLY GLAD THAT THIS HAPPENED IN A PARKING LOT AND NOT WHILE I WAS TOWING MY BOAT, I DO NOT BELIEVE I WOULD HAVE HAD ENOUGH WITS ABOUT ME TO USE THE PARKING BRAKE TO STOP MY TRUCK. I MENTIONED THIS PROBLEM TO MY LOCAL GM DEALER WHO BLAMED IT ON THE TREATMENT OF ROADS DURING THE WINTER MONTHS. GRANTED LIVING IN THE "SNOW BELT" ONE SHOULD EXPECT CORROSION BUT NEVER COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE WITHOUT ANY WARNING. THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ONLINE, JUST SEARCH FOR SILVERADO BRAKE FAILURE.
TRIED TO STOP PEDAL WENT TO FLOOR . UPON INSPECTION MULTIPLE BRAKE LINE FAILURES HAD OCCURRED. *TR *JS

THE CONTACT HAD TO APPLY THE EMERGENCY BRAKE IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE LOCAL MECHANIC WHERE THE FAILURE WAS LOCATED AT THE BRAKE LINES, WHICH WERE CORRODED AND CAUSED THE BRAKE FLUID TO LEAK. THE BRAKE LINES WERE REPLACED. THE STOPPING DISTANCE INCREASED AND THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO COAST TO A STOP BEFORE ALL OF THE BRAKE FLUID SPILLED OUT. THE CONTACT DID NOT TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION OR REPAIR. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 120,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 15 MPH, HE ATTEMPTED TO ENGAGE THE BRAKES BUT THE BRAKE LINE RUPTURE WITHOUT ANY WARNINGS. AS A RESULT, THE BRAKE PEDAL STUCK TO THE FLOORBOARD AND BRAKE FLUID WAS SPEWING OUT FROM UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE WHO DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 87,000.
I HAD FULL BRAKE LOSS AT 55 MPH COMING TO A STOP LIGHT, LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO MOVE THE TRUCK OFF THE ROAD OR THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN FATALITIES . I TOOK MY TRUCK TO MONROE MUFFLER AND BRAKES AND WAS TOLD THAT ALL OF MY BRAKE LINES AND MY FUEL LINES ARE COMPLETELY CORRODED AND THAT THEY ARE SEEING MORE AND MORE OF THIS IN THESE VEHICLES. THEY REPLACED THE BRAKE LINE THAT RUSTED THROUGH BUT TOLD ME THAT ALL MY LINES NEED TO BE REPLACED. AFTER DOING A LITTLE RESEARCH I HAVE FOUND THAT THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF CASES JUST LIKE MINE WITH THESE SAME TRUCKS. WHAT IS GM WAITING FOR BEFORE THEY RECALL THESE TRUCKS, A HIGHER BODY COUNT? *TR

NO BRAKES, ALL MOST WENT INTO OHIO RIVER. MAIN BRAKE LINE RUSTED OUT UNDER DRIVER SEAT. AND EMERGENCY BRAKE CABLE RUSTED OUT UNDER DRIVER SEAT. AFTER CHECKING ALL LINE AND CABLE NEEDS REPLACED $ 2000. DEALER SAID NOTING THEY CAN REPLACE FOR FREE. I WILL NEVER PURCHASE GM PRODUCTS AGAIN . *TR *JS

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER OR A REPAIR SHOP FOR INSPECTION OR REPAIRS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT FOUR OF THE SIX BOLTS ON THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD WERE MISSING THEIR HEADS. THE BOLTS WERE CORRODED AND FRACTURED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT NOTIFIED THE DEALER OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 82,700. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 83,000.

THE GEAR WAS IMMEDIATELY SHIFTED INTO DRIVE AND THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS ENGAGED IN ORDER TO STOP. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO DRIVE WITH THE USE OF THE EMERGENCY BRAKE FOR STOPPING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHO STATED THE BRAKE LINES WERE COMPLETELY RUSTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 66,800. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

THE CONTACT INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND REPLACED THE MASTER CYLINDER. AFTER THE REPAIR THE FAILURE CONTINUED. THE CONTACT LATER NOTICED POWER STEERING FLUID LEAKING AND NOTICED THAT THE HYDRO BOOST UNIT WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THERE WAS A RECALL UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 05V043000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC) THAT COULD HAVE BEEN RELATED TO THE FAILURE. BRAKE LINE FAILURE - BRAKING ABILITY LOSS. WHILE STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT I NOTICED THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS SLOWLY FADING AND MOVING TOWARD THE FLOOR. I ASSUMED THAT THE BRAKE SYSTEM WAS FAILING IN SOME WAY AND DROVE VERY CAREFULLY. I STOPPED AND INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND SAW THAT FLUID WAS LEAKING FROM A BRAKE LINE UNDER THE MASTER CYLINDER AREA, I STILL HAD USE OF THE REAR BRAKES, APPARENTLY ONLY THE FRONT SIDE HAD LEAKED. I NEVER LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE FORTUNATELY, AS I BECAME AWARE OF THE PROBLEM WHILE STOPPED. IF THE FAILURE HAD OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED THINGS COULD HAVE BEEN VERY DIFFERENT. MY LOCAL MECHANIC REPLACED THE TWO BRAKE LINES THAT RUN FROM THE EQUALIZER TO THE ABS UNIT AT A COST OF NEARLY $300.00. ALL THE LINES WERE BADLY CORRODED BUT I CAN'T AFFORD TO REPLACE THEM PROACTIVELY RIGHT NOW. HAVING READ MANY OTHER SIMILAR COMPLAINTS I BELIEVE THAT GM SHOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS BEFORE MORE DAMAGE, SERIOUS INJURY OR EVEN DEATH OCCURS. *TR

UPON LEAVING A PARKING AREA WITH A FULL LOAD OF WOODCHIPS ON MY TRUCK MY BRAKE PEDAL SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT ANY DASHBOARD WARNING, WENT RIGHT TO THE FLOOR. COASTING TO A STOP AND APPLYING THE PARKING BRAKE I STOPPED THE TRUCK WITHOUT HITTING ANYTHING. LOOKING UNDER THE TRUCK I FOUND THE REAR BRAKE LINE HAD BURST. I HAD THE TRUCK TAKEN TO MY MECHANIC WHO STATED THE ENTIRE BRAKE LINE SYSTEM HAD CORRODED AND WAS FALLING APART. I WAS ADVISED TO TAKE IT TO THE LOCAL CHEVY DEALER TO REPAIR DUE TO THE EXTENSIVE LENGTH OF TIME TO NEEDED TO MAKE THE REPAIR. THE ENTIRE BRAKELINE SYSTEM, ABS PUMP MOTOR AND VALVE WAS EXCESSIVELY RUSTED, CORRODED THROUGH AND NON REPAIRABLE AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. REPAIR COST $2,026.47. I AM APPALLED THAT GM IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKE LINE SYSTEM AND I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED NOR WAS A RECALL ISSUED TO HAVE THIS TRUCKS BRAKE LINES REPLACED BEFORE THEY BURST AND CAUSED THE BRAKES TO FAIL COMPLETELY, WITHOUT WARNING. *TR
ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 11, 2012 I EXPERIENCED A BRAKE FAILURE. AFTER LOOKING UNDERNEATH MY 2004 CHEVY SILVERADO 2500HD BRAKE FLUID WAS DRIPPING FROM A RUSTY BRAKE LINE BELOW THE DRIVER SEAT AREA. IT APPEARED I LOST THE REAR BRAKES SO I WAS ABLE TO GET THE TRUCK TO THE CHEVY DEALERSHIP THE FOLLOWING MONDAY AUGUST 13, 2012. THIS TRUCK ONLY HAD 49,364 MILES ON IT AND WAS APPROXIMATELY 8 YEARS OLD. THE CHEVY DEALER LATER CALLED ME WITH THE BAD NEWS THAT ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES WERE BAD AND NEEDED REPLACED. THEY ALSO DISCOVERED THE FUEL LINES WERE RUSTY AND NEEDED REPLACED TOO. THEY LATER NOTIFIED ME THE CALIPERS WERE RUSTY AS THEY COULD NOT BLEED THE BRAKES PROPERLY SO THESE ALSO HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE TOTAL OF THIS AUGUST 21, 2012 INVOICE WAS $2,772.28 AND THIS WAS WITH A 10% DISCOUNT. PLEASE NOTE THE REAR BRAKES WERE JUST REPLACED 1207 MILES EARLIER ON APRIL 30, 2012 FOR MY REQUIRED STATE VEHICLE INSPECTION. DURING THIS STATE INSPECTION (MILEAGE 48,157) IN APRIL 2012 THEY ALSO HAD TO REPLACE A SPEED SENSOR AS THE TRUCK WAS GOING INTO ABS AT LOW SPEEDS. THE INVOICE STATES THIS SENSOR ?CAME APART? AND THEY ALSO HAD TO CLEAN THE OTHER ONE. THERE IS WAS NO INDICATION OF RUSTY BRAKE LINES OR FUEL LINES BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION DURING THE APRIL 2012 STATE INSPECTION AND ON AUGUST 11, 2012, JUST OVER THREE MONTHS LATER I EXPERIENCED TOTAL REAR BRAKE FAILURE. I CERTAINLY FEEL THIS WAS A SUDDEN LOSS AND COULD CERTAINLY LEAD TO FUTURE COLLISIONS, INJURY OR POTENTIALLY DEATH IF SOMETHING IS NOT DONE TO TRY TO CORRECT THIS BRAKE LINE CORROSION PROBLEM. I OPENED THE HOOD TO INVESTIGATE THE CAUSE OF THE TICKING AND DISCOVERED ON THE LEFT BANK ONE OF THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD BOLTS WAS MISSING THE HEAD. I THEN WENT AROUND TO THE RIGHT BANK AND NOTICED THAT THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD WAS BROKEN COMPLETELY ABOUT MID WAY OF THE MANIFOLD. I HAVE OWNED THIS VEHICLE SINCE IT WAS NEW OFF THE DEALERSHIP AND HAVE HAD VERY LITTLE ISSUE WITH IT UNTIL THIS ISSUE POPPED UP. I HAVE DONE SOME RESEARCH AND DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM AFFECTING CHEVROLET AND GM VEHICLES WITH 8 CYLINDER ENGINES. AS I WAS DRIVING MY TRUCK A SMALL CHILD ON A BICYCLE CAME INTO THE ROADWAY, AS I APPLIED MY BRAKES TO SLOW TO A STOP THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. I QUICKLY DEPLOYED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP THE TRUCK'S FORWARD MOTION, LUCKILY I WAS ONLY TRAVELING AT ABOUT 25- 30 MPH WHEN THIS HAPPENED, HAD I BEEN ON A ROAD WITH A HIGHER SPEED LIMIT I WOULD NOT HAVE HAD ENOUGH TIME TO STOP MY VEHICLE. UPON INSPECTION BY MY MECHANIC, I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT ALL OF MY BRAKE LINES WERE RUSTED OUT AND THE VEHICLE NEEDED TO HAVE ALL THE LINES REPLACED. ONE WEEK BEFORE THIS INCIDENT, I WENT UP THE MT WASHINGTON AUTO ROAD IN NEW HAMPSHIRE WHILE ON VACATION WITH MY FAMILY AND CONSIDER MYSELF LUCKY THAT WE ARE ALL ALIVE TODAY. I BELIEVE THE DOT SHOULD ISSUE OR TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION TO ADDRESS THIS OBVIOUS MANUFACTURER'S FLAW AS I HAVE FOUND OUT THIS A COMMON PROBLEM ON MANY SIMILAR GM CARS AND TRUCKS. THE DOT SHOULD AT LEAST NOTIFY OR HAVE GM NOTIFY OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLES THAT THEY ARE IN DANGER ESPECIALLY IF THEY DRIVE THERE GM AFFECTED VEHICLES ON A MOUNTAIN ROAD OR HILLY TERRAIN. WHEN I FIRST PURCHASED THE TRUCK, I NOTICED A WEEK LATER THAT THE DRIVER'S HEATED SEAT WOULD NOT STAY ON, WHILE DEPRESSING THE BUTTON. IT ILLUMINATED BUT WENT OFF AS SOON AS I RELEASED IT. CONSEQUENTLY, NO HEAT TO DRIVER'S SEAT. PASSENGER SEAT HEATED AND STILL HEATS PROPERLY. I NOTIFIED DEALER, BUT DID NOT DIGNOSE THE PROBLEM. BUT IT DID NOT BOTHER ME. I FIGURED IT MAY WORK LATER. NOT UNTIL JULY 2013 DID I NOTICE THE POWER SEAT MOTOR CONTINUED TO RUN WHEN I SHUT OFF ENGINE. SO I TAP THE LATCH ON THE SIDE OF THE SEAT TO LISTEN FOR MOTOR TO QUIT. I JUST FOUND THIS WEB SITE AND SAW THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE WERE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE WITH THEIR BRAKE LINES POPPING. IN MY CASE I WAS BACKING UP TO HOOK UP MY 24FT BOAT AND TRAILER. WHILE I WAS GETTING MY TRUCK IN POSITION TO HOOK UP THE TRAILER I NOTICED THAT MY BRAKES WERE GETTING SOFTER AND SOFTER VERY QUICKLY. AFTER PUMPING THE BRAKES AND REALIZING THAT I WAS NOT STOPPING I ENDED UP HITTING THE TRAILER WITH THE BACK OF MY TRUCK. I WAS ABOUT TO GO ON A 300 MILE TRIP TOWING A BOAT ON THE HIGHWAY. WITH THIS HAPPENING IT PRETTY MUCH RUINED A FAMILY VACATION THAT WE HAD PLANNED FOR SOME TIME TO TAKE THE BOAT. I WAS TRAVELING ON A SIDE ROAD AFTER LEAVING MY HOME AND AS I APPROACHED THE STOP SIGN AT THE INTERSECTION OF A MAIN ROAD I APPLIED THE BRAKES AND THE PEDDLE WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. I ACTUALLY WENT RIGHT THROUGH THE STOP SIGN AND ALMOST HIT ANOTHER CAR TRAVELING ON THE MAIN ROAD. ON INSPECTION OF THE VEHICLE I FOUND THAT THE BRAKE LINES THAT TRAVEL FROM UNDER THE HOOD ALONG THE FRAME TO THE ANTI-LOCK MODULE ARE ALL SEVERELY RUSTED AND ONE HAD A HOLE IN IT. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION AND GM NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. I AM VERY UPSET ABOUT THIS BECAUSE THERE WERE LITTLE KIDS IN THE CAR I ALMOST HIT AND I WOULD HATE TO THINK OF WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED. IN FACT, ALL OF THE BRAKES IN THAT AREA WERE SEVERELY RUSTED. I REPLACED ALL BRAKES ON THE TRUCK WITH STAINLESS STEEL LINES TO INSURE THIS PROBLEM DID NOT HAPPEN AGAIN. FORTUNATELY I WAS ABLE TO AVOID HITTING THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME, ( A MINIVAN WITH A WOMAN DRIVING AND 2 OR 3 CHILDREN IN THE BACK SEATS) I WAS APPROX ONE MILE FROM HOME AND WAS ABLE TO GET TO MY DRIVEWAY BY USING LOW GEAR AND I HAD MINIMAL BRAKING WITH PEDAL GOING ALMOST TO THE FLOOR. CHECKED IT IN MY DRIVEWAY AND FOUND BRAKE LINE HAD BURST DUE TO CORROSION OF STEEL BRAKE LINES. THIS VEHICLE HAS ONLY 55, 271 MILES AND IS 8 YRS OLD . FROM WHAT I HAVE READ ONLINE THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH CHEVY TRUCKS FOR YEARS. CHEVROLET AND THE DEALER I BOUGHT IT FROM GAVE ME THE RUNAROUND AND ABSOLUTELY REFUSES TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT, EVEN THOUGH I HAVE A EXTENDED BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY THAT I PAID $2,000 FOR.! WITH THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS ON THIS MATTER, I WOULD THINK THE NHTSB WOULD FORCE GM TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THESE ISSUES AS I AM SURE THERE MUST HAVE BEEN MANY ACCIDENTS CAUSED BY THIS PROBLEM, AND, I MIGHT ADD HOW MANY FATALITIES???. DEALER SERVICE MGR. TOLD ME THEY PUT CHEAP LINES IN TO KEEP COSTS DOWN SO PEOPLE WILL BUY THEM. HECK OF A GREAT ANSWER FOR SOMETHING THAT BRAND NEW IS APPROX $50,000 . *TR
