SPEEDOMETER DRIVE MOTOR FAILURE, 2004 CHEVROLET 1500 PU. WHEN DRIVE MOTOR FAILS THE SPEEDOMETER WILL FREEZE AT A RANDOM SPEED. SINCE THE SPEEDOMETER IS STUCK, YOU MUST CALCULATE YOUR SPEED FROM A START POSITION OF WHERE IT WAS STUCK. EXAMPLE: IF THE SPEEDOMETER IS STUCK AT 70 MPH, AND YOUR DESIRED SPEED IS 45 MPH. YOUR SPEEDOMETER WILL READ 115 MPH. IF YOUR DESIRED SPEED IS 70 MPH, YOUR SPEEDOMETER WILL PEG OUT AT 110 MPH. IF YOU ARE NOT AWARE THAT THE SPEEDOMETER IS STUCK WHEN REDUCING YOUR SPEED, YOU COULD PANIC, AND ATTEMPT TO REDUCE SPEED TOO RAPIDLY POTENTIALLY CAUSING A REAR END ACCIDENT. WHEN DRIVING THROUGH MULTIPLE SPEED ZONES YOU HAVE TO CONSTANTLY CALCULATE YOUR SPEED, ASSUMING THAT THE SPEEDOMETER IS TRACKING ACCURATELY. IN ORDER TO FIX THE PROBLEM, THE ENTIRE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MUST BE REPLACED. MY COST WAS $386.00. THE SPEEDOMETER WILL SLOWLY RESET, EACH TIME THE VEHICLE IS STARTED, BY 5 MPH. GM CUSTOMER SERVICE ACKNOWLEDGED THIS AS A FREQUENT PROBLEM, YET REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE IT AS A SAFETY ISSUE. THE LOCAL DEALER WHERE I BOUGHT THE TRUCK SAID THEY REPLACE 3-4 PER MONTH. WHERE I HAD THE REPAIR MADE, THEY HAVE ESTABLISHED A VENDOR THAT DOES IT SO ROUTINELY THEY HAVE A 24 HOUR EXCHANGE TURN-AROUND.*AK
MY SPEEDOMETER STARTED ACTING ERRATICALLY AT ABOUT 35,800 MILES. AT FIRST IT STUCK AT A SPEED AND WOULDN'T GO DOWN WHEN THE VEHICLE SLOWED DOWN. THEN IT SIMPLY STAYED AT ZERO MPH. THE PROBLEM WENT AWAY FOR A FEW WEEKS, AND BECAUSE I COULDN'T REPRODUCE IT, I ALLOWED THE VEHICLE TO ROLL OVER MY WARRANTY MILEAGE OF 36,000 MILES. EVER SINCE THEN, THE PROBLEM HAS GOTTEN MORE COMMON AND MORE ERRATIC, UNTIL FINALLY TODAY DURING A 200 MILE DRIVE, THE SPEEDOMETER WENT TOTALLY DEAD. IT NOW READS 60 MPH WHEN I'M STANDING STILL AND IT IS BURIED AT 120+MPH AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. NO LUCK YET FROM GM ABOUT A RECALL OR ANYTHING ELSE. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION AND NEEDS TO BE RESOLVED. *JB
I OWN A 2004 SILVERADO 2500 HD W/ALLISON TRANSMISSION. THE SPEEDOMETER IS FAULTY. THE SPEED SENSOR HAS BEEN REPLACED BUT HAS NOT FIXED THE PROBLEM. THE TRANSMISSION IS OK. THE SPEEDOMETER IS ERRATIC. ONE DAY IT WILL WORK...THEN I'LL BE DRIVING AT 60 MPH AND THE NEEDLE DROPS TO ZERO OR SHOOTS UP TO 120. I HAVE TO GAUGE HOW FAST I AM GOING BY THE OTHER TRAFFIC OR LOOK AT THE RPMS. TL* - THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 C2500 CHEVROLET PICKUP. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SPEEDOMETER HADN'T BEEN WORKING FOR AT LEAST SIX MONTHS. THE SPEEDOMETER WAS STUCK AT 25 MPH, EVEN THOUGH THE ODOMETER WAS REGISTERING THE MILEAGE CORRECTLY. THE PROBLEM ORIGINATED IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. THE VEHICLE WAS PART OF A CONSTRUCTION COMPANY'S FLEET WHICH INCLUDED CHEVROLET PICK-UP TRUCKS FROM 2003 - 2005. SEVEN OUT OF THE 40 TRUCKS HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE SPEEDOMETER FAILING. SPEEDOMETER DOES NOT REGISTER THE PROPER SPEED WHEN VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. SPEEDOMETER REGISTERS FROM 0 MPH TO NEAR ACCURATE SPEEDS. THE INACCURATE READINGS COULD RESULT IN UNSAFE OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE THAT COULD RESULT IN RISK OF INJURY TO SELF AND OTHERS BY NOT BEING ABLE TO MAINTAIN SPEED LIMIT REQUIREMENTS.*AK
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. WHILE DRIVING 15 MPH WITH THE FOUR WHEEL DRIVE ACTIVATED, THE TIRES BEGIN SPINNING. THE FAILURE OCCURS WHEN THE GROUND IS SLIPPERY DUE TO MUD, SNOW, OR ICE. WHEN THE TIRES REGAIN TRACTION AND THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED, THE PEDAL WILL NOT GO DOWN AT ALL. THE VEHICLE REVS AND SURGES. THE ABS MOTOR CAN BE HEARD BUT THE BRAKES FAIL TO OPERATE. THE CONTACT WAS INVOLVED IN THREE CRASHES DUE TO THE FAILURE. THE FIRST CRASH DENTED THE DRIVER SIDE. THE SECOND CRASH OCCURRED WHEN HE STRUCK A TREE WHILE DRIVING IN REVERSE. THE BUMPER WAS BENT AND THE QUARTER PANEL WAS CAVED INWARDS. THE THIRD CRASH OCCURRED WHEN HE ACCELERATED AND THE VEHICLE REVVED AND SLIPPED ON WET GRASS. THE VEHICLE THEN WENT OFF THE EDGE OF THE ROAD AND DOWN 30-40 FEET INTO A SNOW BANK. A TOW TRUCK HAD TO RETRIEVE THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TO THE DEALER APPROXIMATELY 5 OR 6 TIMES, BUT THEY CANNOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT HAS THE WORK ORDERS. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 72,000 AND THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.

IT STRUCK A FENCE BEFORE BEING STOPPED BY A TREE. THE CONTACTS SON WAS PARTIALLY EJECTED FROM THE VEHICLE. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. HER SON WAS TRANSPORTED BY HELICOPTER TO A LOCAL HOSPITAL WHERE HE PASSED AWAY HOURS LATER. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT YET BEEN NOTIFIED. I OWN A 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500 AND YESTERDAY THE SPEEDOMETER BEGAN READING INCORRECTLY. NOW IT CURRENTLY READS 65 MPH AT BOTH A STANDSTILL AND WHEN THE TRUCK IS TURNED OFF. AT REGULAR SURFACE STREET SPEEDS (40-50 MPH) THE SPEEDOMETER READS APPROX. 95 MPH. I CALLED GM IN DETROIT AND THE DENIED ANY KNOWLEDGE OF THE PROBLEM BEING WIDESPREAD AND REFERRED ME TO A DEALER WHO QUOTED ME A PRICE OF $495.00 TO REPAIR THE SPEEDOMETER. WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER GAUGES IN MY INSTRUMENT CLUSTER? HOW LONG TILL THEY FAIL? MORE IMPORTANTLY, HOW MUCH WILL IT COST FOR THE REPAIRS? *JB
MY SPEEDOMETER HAS HAD A 'JERKY' MOTION FOR THE PAST FEW WEEKS. TODAY, ON MY WAY TO WORK, I SET MY CRUISE AT 78. WHEN I EXITED THE FREEWAY AND ENTERED THE SLOWER SECTION OF ROAD, MY SPEEDOMETER FAILED TO DECREASE AS MY SPEED DID. IT STILL READ 78 WHEN I SLOWED TO MATCH OTHER TRAFFIC IN A 55 ZONE. ADDITIONALLY, I STOPPED AT 3 STOP LIGHTS AND EACH TIME THE SPEEDOMETER FROZE AT A HIGHER SPEED THAN THE PREVIOUS ONE (I.E. FIRST STOP 40, THEN 52, THEN 64). I FEEL THIS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN AS MYSELF OR ANOTHER DRIVER OF MY VEHICLE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DETERMINE THEIR ACTUAL SPEED AND MAY PUT OTHERS IN DANGER. *JB

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO MIDAS FOR A BRAKE INSPECTION. THE ROTORS WERE REMOVED AND FOUND TO BE RUSTING FROM THE INSIDE. THE MIDAS MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THE VEHICLE AS NEEDING NEW ROTORS. THE CHEVROLET DEALER IS ONLY WILLING TO TURN THE ROTORS DOWN SO THAT THEY WILL BE WITHIN SPECIFICATION. THE CONTACT WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REPLACING THE BRAKE PADS. THE PURCHASE DATE WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 36,800 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 35,000.

THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY WOULD CORRECT THE FAILURE FOR FREE IF THE VEHICLE WAS AT 80,000 MILES OR BELOW. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT THE COST OF $700. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 118,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 63,000.

I'VE RESEARCHED ON THE INTERNET WHERE THIS IS BECOMING A COMMON PROBLEM. I HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT VEHICLES THAT HAD THERE SEATS RECOVERED BY THE DEALERSHIP AND NOT GM. I HAVE A 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO THAT HAD THE ORIGINAL CLOTH SEATS RECOVERED IN AFTERMARKET LEATHER BY THE DEALERSHIP (THIS VEHICLE HAS THE AUTOMATIC AIR BAG PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM) AND I WAS WONDERING IF MY VEHICLE IS IMPACTED IN THE SAME WAY AS THOSE VEHICLES BEING RECALLED. THE REASON I'M ASKING THIS QUESTION IS THAT IN THE REMEDY SECTION OF THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN DOCUMENT 0641700 IT STATES "A REPLACEMENT LEATHER SEAT COVER THAT IS COMPATIBLE WITH THE PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM IS NOT AVAILABLE" WHICH MAKES ME BELIEVE THAT THE SEAT COVERS INSTALLED BY THE DEALERSHIP IS UNSAFE. IF MY VEHICLES IS IMPACTED, THEN WHAT DO I NEED TO DO? IF MY VEHICLE IS NOT IMPACTED, THEN HOW AND WHY IS MY SEAT COVERS COMPATIBLE WITH THE SENSING SYSTEM? IT APPEARS NUMEROUS GM VEHICLES ARE CURRENT EXPERIENCING SPEEDOMETER CLUSTER PROBLEMS, CAUSE THE SPEEDOMETER TO FAIL. MY ISSUE IS WITH A 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. THERE APPEARS TO BE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ONLINE, WITHOUT ANY RECALL PROPOSED BY GM. *JB

SPEEDOMETER QUIT WORKING. AT A STOP IT WAS SHOWING 120 MILES AN HOUR, SOMETIMES MORE SOMETIMES LESS. AFTER RESEARCHING ON CAR FORUMS ON THE INTERNET I FOUND MANY, MANY PEOPLE HAVE HAD THESE SAME PROBLEMS. *JB
I HAVE A 2004 SILVERADO 2500HD(C/K) WITH 51,000+ MILES. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR SEVERAL WEEKS AND JUST STARTED AS I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON THE HIGHWAY. THE SPEEDOMETER OPERATES ERRATICALLY BY SHOWING VARIOUS SPEEDS SUCH AS 80 MPH WHILE I AM DRIVING 25 MPH OR SHOWN 120 MPH WHILE I AM STOPPED. AT TIME IT MIGHT WORK PROPERLY BUT THEN JUMP TO 60 MPH WHILE I AM DRIVING 20 OR WHILE I AM SITTING STILL. MY DEALER IS WELL AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND WILL REPAIR IT FOR $580.00 I CONTINUE TO DRIVE USING THE TACHOMETER TO GAUGE MY SPEEDS AND SPEED CONTROLS TO MAINTAIN SPEEDS WHILE IN MOUNTAINOUS OR HILLY TERRAIN. *JB
SPEEDOMETER HAS BEEN "JERKY" FOR A MONTH OR SO. THIS MORNING ON MY COMMUTE I SET MY CRUISE-CONTROL AT 65 MPH, WHEN I CHECKED MY SPEED AGAIN THE SPEEDOMETER WAS READING 50 MPH. I DID NOT RESET THE CRUISE CONTROL. *JB
I HAVE A 2004 2500 CHEVY TRUCK THE SPEEDOMETER WILL SOMETIMES START AT 0 AND SOMETIMES AT 60 MPH AND SOMETIMES AT 30 MPH I CALLED THE DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME TO BRING IT IN. THEY SAID THEY WOULD KEEP MY TRUCK FOR 2 DAYS. THEY KNEW JUST WHAT WAS WRONG WITH IN. THEY WANT $350 DOLLARS TO DO THIS. I DON'T THINK I SHOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR A DEFECT ON THE SPEEDOMETER. NOT FOR SURE ON WHEN I BOUGHT THE TRUCK. *JB
SPEEDOMETER ON MY 2004 GM CHEVY SILVERADO READS DRASTICALLY DIFFERENT FROM ACTUAL SPEED WHILE DRIVING, MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO DETERMINE ACTUAL SPEED WHICH COULD CAUSE A CRASH DUE TO IMPROPER SPEED, OR TRAFFIC SAFETY VIOLATION FOR IMPROPER SPEED. GM DOES NOT HAVE RECALL ON THIS SAFETY ISSUE. GM IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM WITH MANY OF ITS VEHICLES AND DEMANDS $500.00 FOR LABOR TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM AT THE OWNERS EXPENSE. *TR
SPEEDOMETER STUCK ON 50 WHILE PARKED. DO NOT KNOW CORRECT SPEED WHILE DRIVING. *NM
