DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE STEERING COLUMN MADE A POPPING SOUND AND THERE WAS SLACK IN THE STEERING. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE STEERING SHAFT IN MARCH 2006, BUT THE PROBLEM PERSISTED.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED AFTER PARKING IN THE DRIVEWAY A GASOLINE LEAK WAS OBSERVED COMING FROM THE GAS TANK. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO DEALERSHIP WHO DETERMINED THE GAS TANK MUST BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT EXPRESSED THAT THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE TANK REPLACEMENT IN A VEHICLE WITH ONLY 58619 MILES.
INSTRUMENT PANEL FAILURE IN 2004 CHEVY SILVERADO 2500HD THE PANEL IS REQUIRED BY LAW ISN'T ? CHEVY IS VERY UNCO-OPERATIVE WITH THIS IF YOU HAVE OVER 70,000 MILES BUT AS FAR AS MY EXPERIENCE GOES YOU CAN AND WILL GET A TICKET FOR AN INOP SPEEDO. MINE WILL HANG UP PAST 120MPH AND EVEN WHEN NOT RUNNING THE RPM WILL READ 4500. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY A SAFETY ISSUE AND CHEVY SHOULD EAT THE REPLACEMENT COST OF $450.00. *TR
DT*: THE CONTACTS STATED WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE BRAKES WERE LESS EFFECTIVE WHEN HOT. THE DEALERSHIP DETERMINED THE ROTORS WERE CORRODED AND THIS WAS A RESULT OF ROAD SALT. THE VEHICLE WAS IN A SALT BELT STATE. UPDATED 09/13/06.*JB
04 CHEVY SILVERADO SPEEDOMETER NOT WORKING. *JB
TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE CHEVY DEALERSHIP FOR PULSATING BRAKES AND A WEIRD 'CLUNKING' NOISE/FEEL IN THE STEERING WHEN CORNERING. THEY REPLACED THE ROTOR ASSEMBLY, BUT NEVER LOCATED THE CAUSE OF THE STEERING ISSUE. THIS ISSUE HAS CONTINUED TO THIS DAY. LAST WEEK I MET ANOTHER CHEVY SILVERADO OWNER WHO HAD EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM AND HAD RECEIVED A RECALL ON THIS ISSUE. I'VE NEVER BEEN NOTIFIED NOR HAVE I SEEN THE BULLETIN ON THIS SITE (HE RECOMMENDED THIS SITE TO OBTAIN THE DATA). HIS VEHICLE WAS THE SAME MAKE & MODEL, BUT ONE YEAR OLDER (MINE IS A 2004). THIS 'CLUNKING' NOISE/FEEL IS CONSISTENT WHEN TURNING CORNERS IN EITHER DIRECTION. IT EFFECTS THE PERFORMANCE FEEL OF THE VEHICLE. AND LEAVES US WONDERING IF THE STEERING BOX IS ABOUT TO FALL APART AT ANY MOMENT. PLEASE ADVISE IF RECALL HAS IN FACT BEEN ISSUED FOR THIS MAKE & MODEL YEAR. *TR
MY GRANDFATHER STARTED EXPERIENCING SPEEDOMETER PROBLEMS WITH HIS 2004 SILVERADO AT ABOUT 68,000 MILES. HE WAS TERMINALLY ILL WHEN THIS HAPPENED AND UNABLE TO AFFORD THE REPAIR, NOT TO MENTION HE WAS NEVER NOTIFIED BY GM. THE SPEEDO FAILED COUNTLESS TIMES AND EVENTUALLY THE TACHOMETER FAILED, BEFORE HIS DEATH ON 29 DECEMBER 2006, I HAVE INHERITED THIS VEHICLE AND THE PROBLEM. I RECEIVED A SPEEDING TICKET AND SO HAS MY WIFE. MY WIFE HAD AN ACCIDENT WITH MY TWO SMALL CHILDREN WHILE DRIVING ON INTERSTATE 10 IN LOUISIANA BECAUSE SHE DID NOT KNOW HOW FAST SHE WAS DRIVING AND HIT WATER ON THE ROAD. WE HAVE CONTACTED GM WHO HAVE TOLD US THEY WILL PAY FOR THE REPAIR UP TO 70,000 MILES. IT IS UNREASONABLE TO BELIEVE THAT A VEHICLE OF THIS AGE WILL HAVE LESS THAN 70,000 MILES AFTER THREE YEARS. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. THIS DEFECT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF GM. SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET HURT OR WORSE. WE CAN NOT AFFORD THE COST OF THE REPAIR, WE HAVE BEEN QUOTED BETWEEN $500 - $700. I AM FURIOUS THAT MY WIFE AND CHILDREN COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED, DUE TO HER UNKNOWING SPEED. IT WOULD APPEAR THE THE DOT AND GM HAVE BEEN AWARE OF THIS SAFETY HAZARD FOR SOME TIME. SPEEDOMETER PROBLEMS 2004 SILVERADO PEGGED AT 120 MPH LARGE SAFETY ISSUE, I NEVER KNOW HOW FAST I AM GOING. *JB
TL*- THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO WITH AN ODOMETER READING OF 27000 MILES. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING AT 25 MPH IN TRAFFIC UNDER DRY CONDITIONS WHEN HE HAD TO COME TO A SUDDEN STOP. THE CONTACT'S WAS UNABLE TO STOP FROM ABOUT TWO CAR LENGTHS AWAY FROM HITTING THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF IT. THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE HIT THE OTHER VEHICLE WHICH CAUSED $4400 WORTH OF DAMAGE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BRAKES WERE NOT AN ADEQUATE SIZE FOR THIS VEHICLE WHICH CAUSED IT TO CRASH, AND COMPLAINED TO THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER SEVERAL TIMES ABOUT THE PROBLEM. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SEAT BELT RESTS AGAINST HIS NECK INSTEAD OF HIS CHEST. THE DEALER STATED THAT IT WAS A DESIGN FLAW AND WOULD NOT MAKE ANY REPAIRS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 3,210. UPDATED 02-01-08 *BF
LOOSE STEERING COMPONENTS ON 3 GM VEHICLES I OWN. DEALER REPLACED ONCE AT 7000 MILES. PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN AT 14,000 MILES. SAME PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED ON MY 2005 CADILLAC ESCALADE AND 2003 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN. EVIDENCED BY LOUD CLUNK WHEN DRIVING. LOOSE STEERING COMPONENTS COULD LEAD TO FAILURE. WAS TOLD BY DEALER THAT HE HAD ORDERED OVER 150 OF THE SAME COMPONENTS AT THE TIME OF FIRST REPLACEMENT. GM REFUSES TO REPLACE COMPONENTS, INSTEAD PACKING WITH GREASE AS A TEMPORARY FIX. PROBLEM WILL BE ON GOING UNTIL SUB-STANDARD PARTS ARE REPLACED. *NM
TL*- THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE HAD A COOLANT LEAK AND CRACKED HEADS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT GENERAL MOTORS WASAWARE OF THIS PROBLEM. THERE WAS A SERVICE BULLETIN ALREADY POSTED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE TOOK VEHICLE INTO DEALERSHIP FOR A PRESSURE CHECK, AND DEALERSHIP FOUND THAT ALL OF THE LEAKS WERE ON THE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT GENERAL MOTORS WAS REFUSING TO SERVICE HIS VEHICLE BECAUSE ITWAS OUT OF WARRANTY, EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE SERVICE BULLETIN RELEASED REGARDING THIS PROBLEM. *AK UPDATED 01/31/07. *JB
(1) I WAS IN A TIGHT TURN. I HAD JUST HAULED 2 TONS OF FEED FROM A FEED MILL 30 MILES AWAY. (2) THE POWER STEERING AND BRAKES BOTH STOPPED WORKING SUDDENLY AND WITH NO WARNING. I HAD NO CONTROL OVER MY VEHICLE AND HAD TO RUN INTO A FENCE POST TO STOP IT. HAD IT HAPPENED A FEW MINUTES EARLIER WHILE I WAS ON A HIGHWAY, SOMEONE COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED. THE TRUCK WAS COMPLETELY UNCONTROLLABLE. (3 VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO DEALER. AFTER TWO DAYS OF TESTING, NO SOLUTION HAS BEEN FOUND. *NM
IGNITION CYLINDER GOT STUCK. GOT IT REPLACED. AFTER ABOUT A WEEK OR SO THE SPEEDOMETER STARTED ACTING UP. SPEEDOMETER HAS SINCE BEEN STUCK AT 120 MPH. *JB
SPEEDOMETER FAILURE-2004 CHEVY. SILVERADO-Z71- INCORRECT SPEED INDICATED ON SPEEDOMETER-AT STOP SPEEDOMETER CONTINUES TO REGISTER MOVEMENT-WHEN MOVING SPEEDOMETER REGISTERS SPEEDS IN EXCESS OF OR LOWER THAN ACTUAL SPEED. *JB
MY CHEVROLET 2004 SILVERADO LS DOES NOT READ THE SPEED CORRECTLY. SOMETIMES IT DOES NOT MOVE AND OTHERS IT WILL HAVE ME GOING 110 WHEN I AM DOING 45 MPH. *NM
LATCH ON THE REAR, PASSENGER SIDE WINDOW OF MY EXTENDED CAB SILVERADO DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY. AIR RUSHES THROUGH AS THE WINDOW WILL NOT SHUT TIGHT. MANY OTHERS HAVE ALSO COMPLAINED OF THIS PROBLEM AND FILED A COMPLAINT. *TR
DT: THE CONTACT STATED, THE BREAK PEDAL WAS POSITIONED ALMOST TO THE FLOOR, MAKING STOPPING DIFFICULT. ALSO, THERE WAS A LOUD POPPING SOUND, (BA-BANG) FROM THE AREA OF THE FUEL TANK, WITHIN A FEW MINUTES OF TURNING OFF THE IGNITION. BOTH ISSUES HAVE BEEN ADDRESSED WITH THE DEALER AND NO SOLUTION WAS FOUND FOR THE BREAKS AND CHANGING THE BRAND OF FUEL WAS SUGGESTED FOR THE POPPING SOUND. BOTH ISSUES CONTINUE UNRESOLVED.
I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE FREEWAY GOING 70 MPH ON MY WAY TO WORK DURING RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC IN THE FAST LANE. ALL OF A SUDDEN I LOST POWER AND THE TRUCK STARTED SLOWING DOWN QUICKLY. I IMMEDIATELY HAD TO TRY TO GET OVER AND GET OFF THE FREEWAY SO THAT I WOULD NOT GET RUN OVER, WHICH IS NOT AN EASY THING TO HAVE A VEHICLE ON THE FREEWAY DURING RUSH HOUR THAT WILL NOT GO OVER 15 MPH. THIS IS NOT VERY SAFE AND I COULD HAVE EASILY HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT BY CARS TRYING TO SWERVE AROUND MY VEHICLE THAT WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. THE PROBLEM WAS THE #7 FUEL INJECTOR CONNECTOR, WHICH HAS BEEN REPLACED AND I DO HAVE THE OLD PART. I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE THIS HAS HAPPENED TO AND THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING TO A TWO YEAR OLD VEHICLE. WHEN THIS PART BREAKS, I FEEL PEOPLE ARE AT RISK AND THIS SHOULD BE TAKEN CARE OF. *JB
IN JUNE 2006 THE TRUCK WAS TAKEN TO PINKERTON CHEVROLET BECAUSE OF A HOT WIRE SMELL. THE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE SMELL. AN OIL CHANGE WAS DONE AT THE SAME TIME. APPROXIMATELY 7 WEEKS LATER THE TRUCK SHUT OFF. MY HUSBAND ATTEMPTED TO RESTART THE TRUCK TO NO AVAIL. HE LEFT THE TRUCK IN THE OFF POSITION AND WENT FOR HELP. HE RETURNED 20 MINUTES LATER TO FIND THAT THE TRUCK CAUGHT ON FIRE IN THE CAB. THE DOME LIGHT WAS ON BUT THE DOORS WERE SHUT. THE DEALERSHIP SAYS THEY THINK RATS GOT INTO THE ENGINE BUT THERE WAS NO FIRE IN THE ENGINE ONLY IN THE CAB. THE TRUCK IS MOVED EVERYDAY. WE HAVE TWO OTHER TRUCKS AND A CAMPER THAT IS STATIONARY ALL THE TIME AND THEY HAVE NO RAT NESTS IN THEM. WE HAVE NO TALL GRASS AROUND OUR HOUSE OR IN OUR YARD. THE TRUCK SAT AT THE DEALERSHIP IN THE TALL GRASS FOR A WEEK BEFORE IT WAS EVEN LOOKED AT AFTER THE INCIDENT. MY HUSBAND REGULARLY DOES SAFETY CHECKS ON THE VEHICLES AND NEVER SAW ANY RAT NESTS, GNAWING, OR DROPPINGS IN THE MOTOR COMPARTMENT. THE DEALERSHIP IS REFUSING TO LOOK AT WHETHER OR NOT THE SUPPOSED RATS REALLY CAUSED THE FIRE. THE DEALERSHIP SAYS THAT MY INSURANCE NEEDS TO PAY FOR IT. THE TRUCK WAS AT THE SHOP A MONTH BEFORE AND YET THERE WAS NO THOROUGH CHECK UP ON THE TRUCK WHILE IT WAS THERE. THIS IS A VERY EXPENSIVE TRUCK TO JUST GO UP IN FLAMES. THE DEALERSHIP IS FIXING THE TRUCK ON THE ASSUMPTION THAT MY INSURANCE IS GOING TO COVER IT BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO INTENTION OF DOING IT THEMSELVES. *NM
CLUNKING SOUNDS FROM TRANSMISSION/DRIVETRAIN. GENERALLY LOUDER WHEN SHIFTING INTO 2ND GEAR. HAVE MENTIONED TO DEALER A COUPLE OF TIMES AND WAS TOLD IT IS NORMAL. THIS IS A WIDELY KNOWN ISSUE ON THE WEB. *TR
2004 CHEVY SILVERADO PICKUP TAILGATE CABLE FAILURE. -- I WAS INJURED TODAY WHILE LOADING MY RIDING LAWN MOWER ONTO THE BACK OF MY PICKUP. THE CABLES (WHICH APPEAR RUSTED WITHIN) SNAPPED ALLOWING THE LAWN MOWER AND MYSELF TO FALL OFF THE BACK OF THE TRUCK. I NARROWLY MISSED BEING SERIOUSLY INJURED. SHEAR LUCK ALLOWED ME TO BE THROWN OUT OF THE WAY. *JB
(1) THERE WERE NO SPECIFIC EVENTS THAT LEAD TO FAILURE. (2) MY 2004 CHEVY SILVERADO SPEEDOMETER STOPPED WORKING AT ABOUT 40K MILES WHEN WARRANTY WAS OUT. DEALER SAYS IT COSTS APPROXIMATELY $500. I'VE READ MANY WEBSITES DESCRIBING THIS ISSUE ALONG WITH LAWSUITS IN CA, OR, AND WA, SO I WAS HOPING GM WOULD RECALL. I'VE BEEN DRIVING FOR 9 MONTHS GUESSING MY SPEED. IT IS MARCH 2007 AND VEHICLE INSPECTION IS DUE SO NOW I HAVE TO PAY $500 SINCE GM HAS NOT RECALLED THIS ISSUE. I'VE SEEN CONCERNS ABOUT THIS ISSUE THAT GO BACK TO 2005. HOW IS IT THAT NO ONE HAS FORCED GM TO RECALL THIS POTENTIAL DANGEROUS DEFECT. (3) TO CORRECT PROBLEM, I WILL HAVE TO PAY $500 TO FIX A DEFECT THAT GM KNOWS ABOUT AND WON'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT.*JB

SPEEDOMETER FAILED AT 38500 MI.ON MY 2004 SILVERADO. DEALER STATED INSTUMENT CLUSTER BAD. DEALER FIXED FOR $100.00 AFTER CALL TO CHEVROLET CONSUMER LINE. SHOULD HAVE COVERED. ( INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WENT UP ON MY 1999 SILVERADO). *NM
DT*:THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING ON AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY AT 70MPH, THERE WAS STINGING/BURNING SENSATION TO THE CONTACT'S FOOT. WHEN THE FOOT WAS REMOVED FROM THE GAS PEDAL, A STEAMING LIQUID WAS OBSERVED ON THE FOOT AND ON THE FLOOR AROUND THE PEDALS. THE LIQUID WAS SPEWING FROM AN AREA UNDER DASHBOARD ABOVE THE GAS, BREAK AND CLUTCH PEDALS. STEAM/VAPOR ALSO APPEARED TO BE COMING OUT OF THE DEFROSTER VENTS ON THE DASHBOARD.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED AFTER TAKING THE VEHICLE IN FOR AN INSPECTION, THE MECHANIC INFORMED THE CONTACT THE REAR BRAKES AND ROTORS WERE BAD. THE CONTACT INSPECTED THE ROTORS AND NOTICED THE ROTORS WERE PITTED VERY BADLY. PRIOR TO INSPECTION, ON THE FIRST OF MAY 2006, THE THE VEHICLE WAS TO A DEALERSHIP FOR A ROUTINE OIL CHANGE AND THEY DETERMINED THAT THE BRAKES AND ROTORS LOOKED GOOD. THE CONTACT EXPRESSED CONCERN OF HOW THE ROTORS COULD HAVE BECOME SO PITTED IN SUCH A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME.
PURCHASED THE VEHICLE, 2 MONTHS LATER A NOISE EMANATED FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. I FOUND THE POWER STEERING PUMP TO BE VOID OF FLUID. I ADDED THE PROPER FLUID. IMMEDIATELY A LEAK OCCURRED FROM THE BRAKE HYDRAULIC BOOST. I RESEARCHED YOUR DATA AND YOUR INFORMATION INDICATED THAT A SAFETY RECALL EXISTS FOR THE BRAKE BOOST (#04V043000 AND #04V045000). THE DEALER REFUSES TO FIX THIS ISSUE UNLESS I PAY THE $1000.00 TO FIX IT. THEY SAY THAT NO RECALL EXISTS FOR MY VEHICLE. WHAT IS CORRECT? IN ADDITION, YOUR DATA ALSO SHOWS THE 2 OTHER SAFETY RECALLS FOR MY VEHICLE WHICH THEY AGREED THAT DID APPLY AND ARE COMPLIED WITH. WHO/WHAT IS RIGHT? *JB
WHEN BRAKING, IF THE VEHICLE IS ON A VERY ROUGH ROAD THAT MAKES THE TRUCK BOUNCE SHARPLY SEVERAL TIMES IN A BRIEF PERIOD, THE ABS SYSTEM ACTIVATES. THIS INCREASES THE STOPPING DISTANCE ON A DRY ROAD. ON A CERTAIN COUNTRY ASPHALT ROAD I HAVE DRIVEN THERE IS A SHORT ROUGH ARE IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING A STOP SIGN AT AN INTERSECTION. AS AN EXPERIENCED DRIVER I KNOW WHEN TO COMMENCE BRAKING. HOWEVER, THE FIRST TIME I DROVE MY ABS-EQUIPPED SILVERADO AT THE LOCATION MENTIONED, THE STOPPING TIME WAS INCREASED UNEXPECTEDLY DUE TO THE ABS ACTIVATION AND MY TRUCK WENT PART-WAY INTO THE INTERSECTION. FUTURE STOPS WERE MADE SAFELY AFTER I BECAME AWARE OF THE STRANGE ABS BEHAVIOR AND BEGAN BRAKING AT THAT INTERSECTION EARLIER THAN NORMAL AND CRAWLED OVER THE ROUGH PAVEMENT SECTION AT A SNAIL'S PACE. DANGER EXISTS WHEN DRIVING IN AN UNFAMILIAR LOCATION AND COMING UPON A VERY ROUGH SPOT. THESE ROUGH SPOTS ARE NOT ALWAYS READILY VISIBLE ESPECIALLY ON AN ASPHALT COVERED ROADWAY. THE BUMPS DO NOT HAVE TO BE LARGE, JUST ENOUGH TO JOSTLE THE TRUCK VERTICALLY, CAUSING THE ABS TO ENGAGE. I NOTIFIED THE DEALER BUT THEY MENTIONED A LACK OF OPPORTUNITY TO REPLICATE THE CONDITIONS THAT CAUSED THE PROBLEM ALONG WITH EXPRESSING DOUBT ABOUT THE PROBLEM ACTUALLY OCCURRING. AN INTERNAL GROAN EMERGED AS I HEARD THE 4-WHEELER DRIVING ROOKIES SPEW THEIR BLATHER AS THIS LONG-HAUL TRUCKING PROFESSIONAL DRIVER WHO DRIVES IN ONE YEAR WHAT THEY DO IN TEN WAS DOUBTED. TYPICAL. I ADMIT, THE PROBLEM IS DIFFICULT TO REPLICATE UNLESS A LOCATION CAN BE FOUND WITH THE PROPER PAVEMENT CONDITIONS. THE SPOT WHERE I FIRST NOTICED THE PROBLEM IS IN CALIFORNIA, I AM NOW BACK HOME IN NEBRASKA AND HAVE NOT FOUND A PLACE HEREABOUTS WHERE THE ABS ACTIVATION OCCURS DUE TO A ROUGH ROADWAY. *JB
STEERING SHAFT NOISE AND VIBRATION ON 2004 CHEVY SILVERADO THERE IS A CLUNKING AND VIBRATION IN THE STEERING WHEN TURNING AT LOWER SPEEDS. ALL FRONT END COMPONENTS WERE VERIFIED TO BE IN GOOD CONDITION WITH NO PLAY. CLUNKING IS BELIEVED TO BE COMING FROM THE STEERING COLUMN. *TR
SPEEDOMETER NEEDLE DOES NOT RECORD SPEED ACCURATELY, RESULTING IN VEHICLE TRAVELING EITHER MUCH FASTER, OR MUCH SLOWER THAN THE SPEED INDICATED (ONBOARD COMPUTER INDICATED I WAS TRAVELING AT 92 MPH, WHILE THE SPEEDOMETER RECORDED 66; ANOTHER TIME THE ONBOARD COMPUTER INDICATED I WAS TRAVELING 56 MPH WHILE THE SPEEDOMETER INDICATED 87). EVENTUALLY, THE SPEEDOMETER NEEDLE PEGS TO 120 MPH AND STAYS THERE. IN RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE, I HAVE SEEN LITERALLY HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS OF THIS SAME PROBLEM. THE LOCAL DEALER SAID THEY HAVE BEEN FIXING A LOT OF THESE SPEEDOMETER PROBLEMS; PROBLEM IS WITH SPEEDOMETER NEEDLE ONLY (THE COUNTER WEIGHT FOR THE NEEDLE, OR THE PROBLEM WITH THE SPEEDOMETERS IN 2003 AND UP CHEVY TRUCKS IS CAUSED BY A TINY BROKEN GEAR IN THE ACTUAL METER MOVEMENT. THE GEAR IS A SMALL PIECE OF CYLINDRICAL METAL SURROUNDED BY A PLASTIC GEAR - THE GEAR IS HELD IN PLACE BY 3 PLASTIC RIBS. ONE OF THE RIBS CRACKS CAUSING AN OFFSET. IF YOU PICTURE THE GEAR AS A CHILD'S TOP - WHEN YOU NORMALLY SPIN THE TOP IT SPINS STRAIGHT UP AND DOWN. BECAUSE THE RIB BREAKS IT CAUSES THE GEAR TO BE OUT OF BALANCE AND THUS THE ROTATION THEN "WOBBLES". THIS CAUSES THE GEAR TO GET STUCK AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS. GM KNOWS OF THIS PROBLEM.. 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500 HD (ALSO MANY OTHER COMPLAINTS WERE RELATIVE TO SILVERADO 1500). *NM
THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON THE FIRST TIME I WAS ACCELERATING GOING UP A MOUNTAIN HIGHWAY ; IT WAS NOT A VERY STEEP GRADE BUT THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS NOT WORTH USING. THE ENGINE IS A V-8. I HAD IT LOOKED AT A DEALERSHIP . THEY FOUND NOTHING AND COULD NOT GET THE LIGHT TO COME BACK ON. AFTER A FEW DAYS IT WAS BACK ON. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD GO OUT OVER NIGHT BECAUSE IT WAS NOT ON WHEN I STARTED DRIVING TO WORK AND THEN AFTER A WHILE IT WOULD COME ON. I HAVE CHANGED OIL , AIR FILTERS AND HAD MECHANICS CLEAN THE SENSOR. IT WILL GO OUT FOR A FEW MILES AND THEN COME BACK ON. ONCE IT HAS STARTED COMING ON AFTER A FEW MILES IT WILL COME AS SOON AS I START THE ENGINE EVERY TIME. AS I HAVE DRIVEN THE TRUCK NOW FOR 109,000 + MILES THE LIGHT STAYS ON. IT DOES NOT SEEM TO MEAN ANYTHING BUT, I ALWAYS WONDER IN THE BACK OF MY MIND..."IS THIS THE TIME THAT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT REALLY IS WARNING ME?" I HAVE READ ON SOME WEBSITES THAT THIS IS A COMMON THING FOR THE 2004 1500 SILVERADO BUT THAT CHEVROLET CHARGES $1,000 + TO FIX IT. THIS IS THE ONLY COMPLAINT I HAVE ABOUT MY 2004 CHEVY SILVERADO. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A SERVICE DEALER, WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE STEERING COLUMN KNOT NEEDED RE-PACKING. THE CONSUMER STATED EVEN WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS IN PARK, THE PLAY IS STILL THERE. 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. THE A/C BLOWER STOPPED WORKING, I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER THEY SAID IT WASN'T COVERED UNDER THE VEHICLE WARRANTY, THE COST WAS OVER $400.00 FOR REPAIR. THE BLOWER MOSTLY WORKED ON LOWER SPEEDS SO WE DID NOT PAY FOR THE REPAIR. TWO YEARS LATER THE BLOWER STOPPED WORKING ALL TOGETHER AGAIN. I INSPECTED THE BLOWER AND WIRING HARNESSES MY SELF TO FIND THE WIRING HAD GOTTEN SO HOT IT WAS SMOKING AND MELTING THE HARNESS CONNECTOR AND PROTECTIVE INSULATION AROUND THE WIRES LEAVING EXPOSED WIRES AND MELTING PLASTIC THAT WAS SURROUNDED BY FOAM (FLAMMABLE) INSULATION. WHY THIS IS NOT RECALLED I DON'T UNDERSTAND, IS THIS NOT CONSIDERED A FIRE HAZARD? THE VEHICLE NOW SITS UNTIL I SPEAK WITH THE DEALER WHO MOST LIKELY WILL SAY AGAIN IT IS NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY WHICH HAS NOW EXPIRED ANYWAY. THIS IS MY WIFE'S VEHICLE THAT SHE ALSO CARRIES MY 2 YEAR OLD SON AROUND IN. SO THE VEHICLE NOW SITS UNTIL WE ONE WAY OR ANOTHER HAVE THE PROBLEM SOLVED. IN READING THE OTHER RECALLS ON THIS MAKE AND MODEL, I BELIEVE THERE MAY BE A LEMON LAW, OR AT LEAST A FIRE SAFETY WARNING OF SOME KIND WITH THESE VEHICLES. *TR
WHEN THE OUTSIDE AIR TEMPERATURE GETS APPROXIMATELY 75 DEGREES, ESPECIALLY OVER 85 DEGREES, THE VEHICLE'S HORN WILL NOT OPERATE. IT HAS BEEN A PROBLEM SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS DELIVERED NEW. IT HAS BEEN TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIR 3 TIMES. EACH TIME IT IS CLAIMED TO HAVE BEEN FIXED. YET, ONCE THE OUTSIDE TEMP GOES UP THE HORN WILL NOT WORK. AFTER SOME TIME WHILE DRIVING IT MAY OPERATE INTERMITTENTLY. IT IS A SERIOUS HAZARD SINCE, DURING WARM WEATHER, IT IS LIKELY TO NOT WORK IN AN EMERGENCY. ON AT LEAST 5 OCCASIONS IT FAILED DURING AN EMERGENCY WHEN I TRIED TO USE THE HORN. I REGISTERED A COMPLAINT WITH GENERAL MOTORS (FILE NO 1-413956517) BUT THEY HAVE BEEN NON-RESPONSIVE. *NM
THE TACHOMETER REGISTERS INCORRECTLY. THE RPM INDICATOR WILL ONLY ADVANCE. WITH THE ENGINE OFF, IT REGISTERS 5,000 RPMS. ALSO, THE SPEEDOMETER OPERATES ERRATICALLY. AT TIMES IT INDICATES A LOWER SPEED THAN ACTUAL OR NO SPEED AT ALL. NONE OF THESE MAY BE A SAFETY HAZARD, BUT IT MAKES COMPLIANCE WITH POSTED SPEED LIMITS DIFFICULT. *JB
WHILE PARKED ON THE STREET, LOCKED AND NOT IN USE FOR 7 DAYS, A FIRE APPARENTLY STARTED IN THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR. IT WAS SIGNIFICANTLY DAMAGED AND SPREAD TO THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL WELL AND LEFT FRONT BUMPER COWLING, BEFORE IT WAS PUT OUT WITH A FIRE EXTINGUISHER. THE GM INVESTIGATOR HAS INDICATED THAT IT IS THEIR DETERMINATION THAT THE PROBLEM STARTED EXTERNAL TO THE VEHICLE. *NM
INJECTORS NUMBER 2 AND 7 LOOSE CONNECTOR AND OIL PUMP RUBBING THROUGH TRANSFER CASE ON CHEVY SILVERADO HD2500 TRAVELING DOWN THE HIGHWAY PULLING A HORSE TRAILER THE TRUCK WENT INTO LIMP MODE AND WOULD NOT KEEP UP WITH HIGHWAY SPEED. HAD TO PULL OVER ON AN INTERSTATE AND ATTEMPT A QUICK REPAIR ALONG THE ROAD. TRANSFER CASE HAS NOT YET CAUSED A PROBLEM, HOWEVER, THE ALUMINUM RESIDUES IN THE CASE OIN ARE VERY HIGH AND WHEN PUMP GOES THROUGH CASE ALL OIL WILL BE LOST AND THE VEHICLE WILL STOP. *NM
REAR PASSENGER SIDE SHOCK ABSORBER LOWER MOUNT SHEARED COMPLETELY AWAY, LEAVING NO OPERABLE SHOCK ABSORBER ON THAT SIDE OF THE AXLE. *NM

MY 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO HAS DANGEROUS BRAKE PROBLEMS. THE BRAKES GIVE WAY UNEXPECTEDLY WITH THE PEDAL GOING ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. THIS HAS HAPPENED FOUR TIMES IN THE PAST TWO MONTHS- EACH TIME THE SITUATION WAS DIFFERENT. THE FIRST TIME I WAS JUST PARKING THE CAR IN THE GARAGE MOVING IT FROM THE DRIVEWAY. THE SECOND TIME I WAS PULLING A TRAILER LOADED WITH A TRACTOR ACROSS TOWN AND THE ONLY THING THAT STOPPED ME WAS THE ELECTRIC BRAKES ON THE TRAILER. THE THIRD TIME WAS MOVING IT ACROSS THE YARD. THE LAST TIME WAS IN THE CITY DRIVING TO A STORE, I WAS GOING DOWN A HILL TO A RED LIGHT. THE PEDAL SUDDENLY GIVES WAY AND GOES ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR WITH NO WARNING. IT THEN BEGINS WORKING AGAIN JUST AS SUDDENLY AS IT QUIT. THE BRAKE PEDAL WILL SNAP BACK UP AND THE BRAKES START TO HOLD AGAIN. ONE TIME IT TOOK 15 MINUTES BEFORE IT STARTED WORKING AGAIN, THE OTHER TIMES IT WAS A MATTER OF 3 TO 5 MINUTES WITHOUT BRAKES. *JB

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 20 MPH, A KNOCKING NOISE WAS HEARD COMING FROM THE STEERING COLUMN. THE SERVICE DEALER OFFERED TO REPACK THE STEERING COLUMN WITH HIGH TEMPERATURE GREASE. THE CONTACT WAS NOTIFIED BY THE VEHICLE INSURER ABOUT THE AFTERMARKET PART RECALL # 06E010000, PITMAN ARM. THE AFTER MARKET PARTS MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED.
LEFT FRONT HUB ASSEMBLY TOTAL FAILURE. APPARENTLY HUB STAYED LOCKED IN FOUR WHEEL DRIVE AND DESTROYED HUB. THE FAILURE WAS NOTED WHEN EXTREME VIBRATION AND LACK OF STEERING RESPONSE OCCURRED. FAILURE WAS AT 49,750 MILES. HUB ASSEMBLIES SHOULD LAST LIFE OF VEHICLE. REPAIRED AT MY OWN COST AFTER CHEVROLET REFUSED TO REPAIR. *JB

I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY MANY GM DEALERSHIPS THAT THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE FOR THIS TRUCK. WHY ISN'T THERE A RECALL? THIS IS NOT SAFE BECAUSE I HAVE NO IDEA HOW FAST I'M TRAVELING. THE INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (INCLUDING THE SPEEDOMETER AND TACHOMETER) ON MY 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO STICKS. I FIRST NOTICED THE PROBLEM IN APRIL 2006 WHEN THE SPEEDOMETER STUCK. I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AND PASSING PEOPLE VERY EASILY, YET MY SPEEDOMETER SAID I WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH. THE PROBLEM HAS PROGRESSED SINCE THAT TIME AND THE SPEEDOMETER WORKS ONLY INFREQUENTLY AT THIS TIME. OVER THE PAST 21 MONTHS, I HAVE USED THE TACHOMETER TO DETERMINE MY APPROXIMATE SPEED, YET IT BEGAN STICKING IN JANUARY 2008. I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM GM IN DECEMBER 2007 "NOTIFYING" ME OF THIS POTENTIAL DEFECT, AND EXTENDING THE WARRANTY ON THIS PART TO SEVEN YEARS OR 70,000 MILES. I, HOWEVER, HAVE APPROXIMATELY 95,000 MILES ON MY VEHICLE AS OF JANUARY 7, 2008. CHEVROLET AND GM APPEAR UNWILLING AT THIS TIME TO ISSUE A RECALL FOR THIS SIGNIFICANT SAFETY HAZARD, AND THEY APPEAR UNWILLING TO WORK WITH ME BECAUSE I APPARENTLY DRIVE TOO MUCH. I WAS FORCED TO PURCHASE THE NEW INSTRUMENT PANEL AND PAY FOR THE COST OF THE PART AND LABOR IN SPITE OF GM'S ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF THE SAFETY HAZARD APPARENTLY COMMON TO 2004 SILVERADOS.
