NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
At 5000 miles after the last oil change, my low oil light came on, took it to my local mechanic and he said it was 3 quarts low. took it to the dealership and they say this is normal but have me to a check every time i put gas up to 2000 miles. bring it back and they say its one quart low and this is normal. The attendant at the dealership says he sees this often and knows its frustrating but thats GM policy and there is nothing he can do. I do not think this is normal and have searched on the internet and find that many people have this problem. I do hope this is looked into because i feel like this is an issue and GM doesnt want to have to fix it because of cost
While driving the engine began operating very rough and all system lights indicated an issue including safety features were now no longer operating.
While driving on the highway at high speed, my vehicle suddenly shut down and went into neutral. After a few minutes of trying to start it, it started and I was able to drive it home. The following day, on my way to the dealership for an inspection, while driving on a busy street, it shut down again. This time, it wouldn't restart, and I had to call the police and a tow truck to have it towed to the dealership. I was freaking out as I had my daughter inside the car with me. At that point, the vehicle had around 26,000 miles. The dealership inspected it and determined the engine was faulty and needed to be replaced. After the engine was replaced, the vehicle seemed fine, but recently, I've been experiencing problems again. The car struggles to start when it shuts off during stops, using the auto shut-off feature, and there's an intermittent hard shifting issue. It feels like the engine is failing again or maybe the transmission, but I've been told that unless the dealership can replicate the issue when I bring it in, they can't do anything. I'm concerned about being stranded on the road again, especially since my daughter is always with me. The vehicle’s engine and mechanical components don’t seem reliable, and I no longer feel safe driving it. However, I have no other option as it is my daily car for work and everything else. I’ve asked for an extended warranty from the dealership after the engine replacement, but I was told GMC doesn’t offer one for this issue. I’ve seen others on social media report similar problems, and I want to share my experience, as I’m just one of many customers facing this issue.
Main bearing failure on my 6.2L at 17,000 miles. Starting making knocking noise, and within two miles it died and wouldn’t restart. No check engine light or warning lights. Blew a 40 amp fuse. Once replaced started but knocked and died. Dealership determined spun main causing internal engine failure. Motor replaced. Started making internal engine noise again like almost a spark knock type noise or rattle under acceleration. Has 32k miles on it now and bring into dealer next week for issue. Engine was on back order and took over a month to get.
Message on car states: Service Door Latch System First, the driver door stopped locking and latching. Then, days later the rear doors also stopped locking. The dealership is recommending to replace the door latches on the inside of the door and it is very expensive.
2023 Tahoe High Country was being operated at Interstate speeds when the vehicle shifted to neutral, engine died and the vehicle experienced a rapid decrease in speed. Check engine light activated as well as dashboard lights. Was able to guide vehicle to side of road. Unable to start vehicle and was towed to local dealership. Learned the engine was blown as well as a large 20amp fuse. I am an expert in traffic crash reconstruction and this type of incident could lead to serious injury or death.
I've had my 2023 Tahoe for 15 months, purchased Dec. 2023 Issue #1. Dash message on start up " Restraint System Needs Service". I noticed small lights overhead (buttons for tail gate, sun roof, reading lamps) were off. I pressed some of them, and dash message went away, and lights came on. Everything worked fine. I've narrowed it down to the passenger side reading light. When dash warning comes on, I press reading light, and whalla! all works fine. This has happened about 6 times over the last year. Issue #2. After driving many hours (9 hr drive, then a 2hr drive, then 4hr hr drive on different days/nights) in rain with wipers in auto mode, using defrost on and off as needed. Suddenly, wipers stop working as well as headlights in auto mode! Scary. Pulled over and waited with engine off. Restarted and still nothing. I was able to use headlights in full ON mode. I turned the wiper switch all the way from top-pulse to the full-on 4-6 times really quick back and forth, and like magic, everything worked again! This has happened 3 times in the last 2 months (always during several hours of rainy weather driving). Dealer says they can't fix what they can't witness. I suppose my only recourse is to video tape it and then show dealership.
Exhaust leaks in to the cab. This has happened on several Chevrolet Tahoe Police Package Vehicle models that we have. Here are the Vin #'s [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] Several other Sheriff's Offices have had the same issues with their Tahoe PPV's- Big Stone County, Dodge County, Itasca County, and Rice County have all experienced the same issues with their Tahoe’s INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Fuel module failure. Tahoe stalled while on highway at normal speed of 55 mph. Near miss accident. Very dangerous, could have resulted in injury or fatality. Tahoe had to be towed to Chevy dealer, caused major problems. Tahoe only had 24,000 miles at time of incident.
I am writing to express my deep frustration with a recent issue I have encountered with my brand new 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe (VIN: [XXX] ). Following the expiration of my complimentary OnStar subscription, I discovered that all voice-activated and Bluetooth functions are inoperable unless I purchase a separate wireless plan at $25 / month which I cannot afford. This is a stark contrast to my previous six Chevrolets, all of which allowed hands-free phone calls and navigation functionalities via Bluetooth without requiring an additional subscription. I have contacted two Chevrolet dealerships, spoken with numerous employees, and reached out to OnStar, spending a total of nearly two hours on the phone attempting to resolve this issue. Unfortunately, no solution has been found. My primary concern is safety. Manually operating my phone while driving is unacceptable, and in some states illegal, putting myself and others at risk. Additionally, the lack of hands-free navigation significantly detracts from the convenience and value of the vehicle. While I appreciate the technological advancements in the 2023 Tahoe, the current system feels restrictive and potentially detrimental to customer safety. I understand the potential for additional revenue through data plans, but I believe the potential for unsafe driving and safety concerns outweighs this consideration. The contact owns a 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V274000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING); however, the part to do the recall repairs were not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The dealer was made aware of the issue and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle suddenly decelerated and briefly lost automotive power, before the vehicle regained normal functionality, with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
Fuel pump control module failed on this vehicle, there were instances where driving it felt like a stutter and ultimately failed to start while out.
Bought new and there was a brake pad sensor message immediately that we took it to the dealer several times for and nothing was done other than clearing the code and giving it back. Was in accident 1/24 and it was found that there was a frayed/damaged wire in the break module and break pad sensor that I feel could have led to the accident
The contact owns a 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated that after the vehicle was serviced at the local dealer, the message "Add Oil" was displayed, and the vehicle continued to experience excessive oil consumption. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. No further information was available. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 18,000.
Car completely died. Engine spun a bearing at 10, 000 miles.
While driving this rental vehicle in traffic it shutdown and came to an abrupt halt. All lights on the dash were flashing, emergency hazard lights would not turn on. Attempted to restart vehicle with no result. After 2 minutes vehicle dash lights went off and hazard lights were able to be turned on. Vehicle then restarted. While pulling vehicle off the road, brakes were not responsive.
Driving down a street we heard a loud boom almost sounded like something exploded We looked around but saw nothing. Then started hearing noises from the sunroof Sure enough it had exploded Not cracked And it is smashed outwardly not in therefore not something that hit it or caused impact from the outside in. We researched it and seems to be a known ongoing issue. Very dangerous as it is happening more and more. It definitely startled us and could have been a scary situation if we had been on the highway. Also dangerous if that glass falls on you while driving.
Tire is torn in the sidewall at the bead inside the rim edge. The tire had less than 10,000 miles on it and was installed on March 14th 2023, failing around [XXX] (around 9 months of use). It had been installed on a set of Chevrolet wheels before arriving at the dealership and that tire/wheel combo was installed on the Tahoe by Chevrolet in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. The tire failure appeared to occur without provocation and failed on a 2.1 mile drive from the store home. The tire on the rim was mostly covered by the edge of the rim and it was very hard to spot visually. There was no damage to the rim, nor any reason the tire might have been lacerated by the rim. Upon dismount for replacement, the damage appears to be a tear or rip and does not appear to be puncture damage. The tire was replaced at Chevrolet and they noted that there was no reason for the damage (and charging us for the failure). The tire was then shipped to Bridgestone and was returned to the Chevrolet dealer and it was explained that they said, "it happens". The only warning lamp that illuminated was the TPMS low pressure warning as the tire quickly deflated. I still have the tire in my possession for inspection. My safety was put at risk because the tear occurred during normal driving and without provocation. Luckily we were in the neighborhood and speed was 25 mph. Had this happened on the interstate, the outcome could have been quite different. This was a Bridgestone Alenza A/S 02 275/50R22 111H M+S dated 5022. Thank you! This is a brand new vehicle with a known problem to GM yet they keep selling them and admit they cannot fix it. The audio system, including the blinker sound, is warning systems and hands free phone capabilities do not work properly, if at all. This is a distraction while driving - especially when it comes to phone use. It is deceptive and putting public safety at risk, not to mention costing consumers thousands of dollars. Their built in safety system (onstar) cannot be accessed due to lack of audio rendering it useless in a crash/emergency which is a selling point they tout. I do have video of this occurring. Dealership says they cannot repair and that consumers are just stuck with expensive vehicles they cannot rely on.
Vehicle electronics fail leaving Vehicle in a dead state with no ability to lock or unlock doors
My issue with the vehicle is that the reverse lights do not project enough and when backing up at night you can not see it or even with the back up camera. It’s poor placement of the light and does not provide adequate light when backing up. I have not had any incidents with it but I feel like it is a huge potential problem
This Tahoe comes with a full size spare. This model includes Brembo front brakes. The included spare cannot be installed/mounted to the front axle as the wheel is undersized and will not fit over the brake calipers. None of my ordering information nor MSRP label or model information on Chevrolet.com points out the included spare tire/wheel cannot be used in all positions of the SUV. Finding this out at 5am in the dark and drizzle of a cold Michigan morning on the side of US23 southbound is not the least bit safe.
We have a chevy with the 6.2 V8 engine. First we were at a stop light on the highway and the car shifted into Neutral and would not come out for two light cycles. My wife and children were stuck at the light with car's swerving around them at 65+. Finally it shifted into Drive. We called the Chevy dealership and they said it would be a month before they could look at the car and there were no check engine warnings. Two days later my wife and family were driving down the highway and suddenly it started making a flapping sound from the engine bay and was losing power. She pulled over and turned off the vehicle to see if that changed anything. The car would not restart and the check engine light was on (solid not flashing) it would just try to turn over with no success. We had it flat bed towed to the chevy dealership where they told us the engine was blown and that it had thrown a rod. We have 3900 miles on the vehicle and I would say this is a significant safety issue given that it can disable the vehicle on a busy highway.
The contact owns a 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated while driving various speeds, the vehicle would shake with the check engine and several other unknown warning lights illuminated. Upon restarting the vehicle, the vehicle failed to move out of park(P) with the warning lights remaining illuminated. The contact called the dealer, and the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it remained. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided the contact a case number. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 8,000.
The contact owns a 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated that while driving at an unknown speed, the "service safety restraint system", warning message appeared on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where a diagnostic was performed; the diagnostic showed that there was a defect in the overhead module which rendered her airbag ineffective. The contact was informed that the part to repair the vehicle was on backorder and was given a time estimate of six weeks after the diagnostic was performed. The contact recently called the dealer and was informed that part was still unavailable and that there was no longer an ETA on the part. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was 15,000.
I asked the dealer for information about the L87 6.2L engine rod bearing failure recall. I was told that they wouldnt perform the work until i recieved a letter from GM. This was when i got my first oil change. Then every oil change after that i asked the same question. At 43401 miles i parked the vehicle and havent driven it since. I am afraid to have something happen to me or my family. I paid $82,000.00 for a vehicle that GM's fix is to add thicker oil. I think that the rods and bearings should at least be visually inspected. The dealers maintenance manager at Kunes Lake Geneva says theyll listen to it with a stethescope. If it sounds ok theyll change the oil. I paid way to much to chance my familys safety on thicker oil. To make the situation better the vehicle blue books for $56,000.00 IT DEPRECIATED $26000.00 IN TWO YEARS. That is unacceptable.
Second row right side seatbelt retractor broken and not bolted to C pillar from factory.
Frequently getting warning message on main info display stating "Service Safety Restraint System". This is consistent with a message and service bulletin issued for 2021 Tahoes where there is an issue with the connector for the airbag under the seat.
Less than four weeks after having purchased a new 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe LT the backup and 360-degree surround vision camera system completely failed. The cameras would intermittently flicker or would lose connection all together preventing the driver from being able to reverse having the benefit of the camera vision. The rearview camera screen turns black with a red triangle containing an exclamation point alongside a "no camera" circle symbol. The Chevrolet dealer has inspected the vehicle and has confirmed the camera computer is defective and cannot be fixed - a replacement module with recalibration of the cameras is necessary. The vehicle cannot be driven safely, and thus has been with the dealer now for 18 days, with no time table from either the dealer or from General Motors as to replacement of the failed component. The vehicle had been driven less than 700 miles before this failure occurred.
Intermittent loss of sound on all electrical aspects of vehicle. Can not hear music, phone calls, blinker, seat belt signal, crash detection sound. None will work. Even after turning off and turning back on issue remains unless vehicle is off for 15-30 minutes then it will reboot !
