Data synced from NHTSA on May 4, 2026
Engine light came on and took 2018 Edge to mechanic. Diagnostic indicated misfiring of piston 2 and 3. Started by changing the spark plugs. Light came back on within a few days. Took car to Ford dealer and they indicated that coolant was leaking into cylinder 2 and 3 and that it could result in engine failure if not repaired including risk of a firer. Engine failure on the wrong roadway (i.e. busy urban interstate highway) could result in catastrophic engine failure and risk injury and loss of life. Given the volume of similar complaints for coolant leakage into cylinders, the probability of engine failure and its consequences should be enough to require a mandatory recall.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Edge. The contact stated while driving at unknown speeds, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was losing coolant, but there was no evidence of a coolant leak. Additionally, the defroster was not operating as designed. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that coolant was leaking into the engine and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was taken to another local dealer, AutoNation Ford Torrance (3111 Pacific Coast Hwy., Torrance, CA 90505), but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and opened a case. The manufacturer stated that the vehicle was out of warranty but might assist with paying 40 to 60 percent of the cost of the repair. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 54,000.
The vehicle would run rough and falter upon cold start. The "check engine" light activated. The code indicated a misfire in cylinder #2 "permanent". The local Ford Dealership diagnosed the issue and informed me that coolant was getting into the cylinder and could eventually cause the engine to fail and pose a safety issue. The vehicle probably had 74,000 or less when I first noticed the symptoms. Initially, I replaced all the ignition coils and spark plugs, but it did not resolve the issue. At time of engine replacement, the vehicle had 76,195 miles on the odometer.
Symptoms: Coolent level would go low; White smoke from exhaust; Vehicle would run rough; Coolent was in cylinder; and Check engine light would indicate. I took vehicle to my local Ford dealer. I was told this is a known issue with my vehicle and that the engine needed replaced. See previous Complaint # 11558954

I am filing a formal complaint regarding a potential failed or insufficient recall repair related to NHTSA Recall 22V413 / Ford Recall 22S43 on my 2018 Ford Edge (VIN: [XXX] ). Ford replaced the shift cable bushing in Sept 2022. Within months, I experienced symptoms consistent with the original defect, including gear engagement issues, especially on inclines. One day, after shifting into reverse in a parking lot, the car rolled forward. I had to slam the brakes to avoid hitting another vehicle and feather the gas to reverse. These issues continued. Despite multiple service visits and reporting concerns, the dealership failed to document the problem. In Sept and Nov 2024, I again contacted the dealer. On Dec 18, 2024, they finally provided a loaner and inspected the vehicle. A full teardown revealed internal damage: metal debris in the solenoid body, worn sun gears, and failed clutch components—consistent with long-term gear misalignment. Ford has offered partial financial help but refuses to cover the full cost, leaving me with over $1,300 out-of-pocket despite raising concerns during the warranty window. As of June 16, 2025, the vehicle is still disassembled and remains in the dealership’s service bay with no firm repair date. I have been without my personal vehicle for six months. I respectfully request NHTSA to: Investigate whether recall 22V413 repairs are failing prematurely or inadequately prevent long-term damage. Assess whether further manufacturer responsibility is warranted for failures linked to this recall. Encourage Ford to fully cover repair costs under an extended remedy. Consider requiring a recall performance audit or extended warranty for affected vehicles. Thank you for reviewing this safety matter. The mechanic informed the contact that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified about the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 48,800.
Check engine light will appear. Vehicle is blowing number two cylinder along with spark plug every two weeks. It is going through large amounts of antifreeze. Drives as if it is bogged down and shifts very hard and loud. While driving is shakes from front end. I have brought vehicle to a master mechanic and has started that the head gasket will eventually break or could catch fire. This is a on going issue at this time.
coolant leak into engine cylinders 2018 Ford edge ecoboost engine ford dealer said vin # not under recall but know design flaw across the board with engine
In July 2023, I had to refill my anti freeze just one week after service. My dash lit up regarding the problem. Today, October 2023, same situation. Both situations required about 36 oz of antifreeze. In checking online I noticed this reference number indicating numerous problems like this in 2016-2018 Ford Edge. [XXX] In contacting Ron at Ford Motor Co ([XXX] ), he stated that Ford has no recall for this situation. He referred me to you. Any info on what I can do. I'm [XXX] and I brought my Ford Edge to Lucas ford on Columbus Road in Burlington, NJ 08016 for Lube and a Tire Rotation. After an hour they said the Ford Edges wheel lugs were swollen and could not be removed under normal conditions. They wanted $300.00 to replace nuts, and with the same ones from FORD. I thought this was a scam and did not have the car dealer replace them. I researched the problem and found it was true and that FORD could care less about it. I tried to remove one nut at home and spent two hours on it and could not remove it. FORD should replace all there defective parts now. As i said I'm [XXX] and if i have a tire blow out on the road, how do remove iot and install the spare? How about a recall on the wheel lug nuts!!! coolant leak and head gasket failure
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, the vehicle was hesitant to turn on. The contact also heard an abnormal sound coming from the vehicle. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was diagnosed by a dealer and the contact was informed that a coolant leak was the cause for the failure. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to call NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 88,678.
The check engine light came on. The warning was a cylinder 2 misfire. The fix is an engine replacement. I called Ford. They acknowledged a coolant leakage problem. They said there was no recall but would offer "assistance". I was told to limit driving until repair as the engine will stall at any time. This problem happened shy of 68,000 miles (shortly after warranty expiration).
My check engine light was on and my car would shake and vibrate upon staring the engine. I was running low on coolant when I shouldn’t be despite no signs of leaking on the ground. I took it to an authorized shop by Carfax, it’s Autotech in O Fallon, MO. They ran diagnostic tests and the codes were P0302 and P0316, which apparently are common issues with Ford Edges between 2015-2018. The shop owner said it’s normal for these cars even with low miles to end up needing a new engine bc of how Ford built them to where there are cylinder misfires causing coolant to leak into the engine causing engine failure. I asked why there were no recalls on this known issues and he assumed it must be bc no one died yet. I have since been reading thread after thread online of customers having this same issue and needing a new engine some even after only 25,000 and 50,000 miles. I bought my car used less than a year and a half ago with 59,000 miles on it and was not offered a warranty, which I know no why, they probably knew of the issue and the dealership didn’t want to be on the hook to cover a new engine. So now I’m stuck with an unsafe car to drive or shell out $9000 on a new engine that will fail like others who had theirs replaced only to have the same thing happen. I love my car and don’t want to give it up. How can Ford take ownership of their poor design flaw that is causing this to happen and put us at risk of being stranded or worse when our engine blows? Ford tough…how so? These cars are worthless after only 25,000 for some. For me I only got 15000 miles out of my car that I still owe $17,000 on and now I’m told I have to pay almost $10,000 to replace the engine for their design flaw that they have known for years is a major issue? There are lawsuits for this issue. There is class action in California for this issue. How can they get away with this? I’m stranded right now and I can’t afford to fix it and nor should I have to. Ford should be held accountable, not me.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Edge. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle was idling rough. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The mechanic determined that there was coolant intrusion into cylinder #2. The contact was informed that the engine needed replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 79,000.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Edge. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, the vehicle shuddered and made an abnormal sound then lost motive power. The temperature gauge indicated that the engine was HOT. The contact stated that there was white smoke coming from the tailpipe. The check engine and low coolant warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle had not been diagnosed. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and determined that the vehicle was not under warranty. The failure mileage was approximately 92,000.
Eco boost engine is less than four years old and coolant leaked into engine. This should never happen on a four year old vehicle. Ford put out a “bulletin” on this, not a recall, but never informed me of it directly. When we contacted Ford told us we were out of luck. Cost me 7k to fix. Internet says this is happening way more often than it should be. My mechanic told me this should only happen to vehicles with hundreds of thousands of miles. He was as stunned as we were. This could have killed me. I’m fortunate that I decided to have it looked at. The cost was significant, but my life is worth more. A recall should be triggered. Ford knows it, lawyers know it, the Feds should know it too.
We bought a new 2018 Ford edge with eco boost paid for the extra extended warranty …this pass Oct coolant is now leaking into the number 2 cylinder now the fix is a new engine which is 9000 and Ford only covering 3000 of it. Luckily husband is a me and knew to park the car until we got it into Ford for diagnosis. The engine can lock up at any time who’s to know when Would not be a good outcome on the highway Much less the shady deals of Ford not covering engines and selling them knowing this design flaw is their doing Who sticks up for the little people buying their 40000 cars and have no recourse
Engine coolant is leaking. Some times white smoke comes out of exhaust. Causes car to rattle and shake. Spent over $600 to get diagnosed and saying new engine needed. Check engine light came on saying it was bad coil. Replaced coil still didn't work found out coolant is leaking into started coil 2 and spark plug.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Edge. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was intermittently illuminated. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle started to overheat. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that coolant was added to the coolant reservoir. The vehicle was taken to an intendent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the head gasket needed to be replaced. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the head gasket needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the VIN was not included in a recall. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 47,000.
My vehicle, along with many other Ford Edge owners, has coolant intruding into the #2 engine cylinder, which causes engine misfires, and has caused others engines to crack and have a engine fire. Ford is aware that the head was ground incorrectly during manufacturing, which allows the head gasket to fail. Ford has issued tech service bulletin 19-2346 There is a recall in Canada, we need one in the US. This issue typically takes time and mileage, and in my case and others the manufacturers engine warranty has expired. The fix for my 2.0L engine is a total replacement. Thanks for your time.
The car trunk will not latch right and also has problems with latch closing and won't stop even if something is under it. I've had the trunk hit me in the head twice and continued to close and also broke items in the car.
Ford dealer verified an independent auto repair shop diagnostic conclusion of coolant intrusion in cylinder 1. Ford has issues TSP 22-2229 regarding same issue with an open campaign. The vehicle exhibits low coolant level, white exhaust smoke and runs rough with an illuminated check engine light. The dealer confirmed it is "206" diagnostic condition code. At normal engine operating temperature, the cooling system was set to 20 PSI for 5 hours and the pressure dropped more than 4 PSI. Per the dealer, a customer case number was opened with Ford. Vehicle age: 5 years, 10 months. Mileage 39,536. Ford Customer Care offered to cover 40% off the repair cost. Offer was accepted. Dealer noted the following repairs: Removed the spark plugs, used a borescope and found coolant has entered the cylinders. Removed then engine and replaced the long block assembly using all of the approved ford gasket removers, parts cleaners, shampoo and metal surface prep wipes to clean all related mating surfaces per the workshop service manual. Also replaced all other related seals, gaskets and non-reusable hardware and re-installed all components removed for repairs in the reverse order of removal and referring to TSB 22-2229. Vacuum filled colling system and filled engine with oil. Hooked up IDS and cleared all DTCS verifying they didn't come back. Cleared KAM valves of the PCM, and ran a misfire monitor profile correction relearn. Road tested the vehicle 20 miles to verify repairs. The system is now operating normally at this time." Also, the "tech found car to have original battery and negative terminal was seized to negative post. Removed and replaced battery. Performed a BMS reset. Road test vehicle. All systems okay at this time." I attempted to upload the repair invoices and it would not allow me to do so. I had to delete the pdfs in order to proceed. I can provide this information upon request.

The motor is shot. A known problem from Ford is not being addressed. Coolant leaking into the cylinder which can cause car to catch on fire. I bought a platinum extended warranty from where I bought the car but they will not fix because of a TSB and Ford won't fix because problem is not recalled. I lost over $18,000 on this vehicle and had to buy another car.

I have a 2018 Ford Edge SEL with a 2.0 L engine and 63,550 miles. The EcoBoost engine has coolant intrusion into the cylinders due to a design flaw in the engine where the head gasket fails. Ford has a TSB bulletin (TSB 19-2346) they sent out that requires a new engine replacement for this issue. This issue has been present in 2015-2018 Ford edge and occurs usually when the warranty expires. This relates to safety in that the engine can fail or catch fire. I took it in to a Ford dealer and they said I would need an engine replacement costing $8,100. My car has not been inspected by the manufacturer but I called them and was told that they had no program available to help me. I did contact the dealer I purchased the use car from and they said they couldn't do anything to help me. The MIL (check engine light) came on 2 weeks after I purchased the car from the dealer and when I checked under the hood I found the coolant reservoir empty. I now have payments on a car that needs an engine replacement for $8,100.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Edge. The contact stated that the retractor for the driver's side rear seat belt was inoperable. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 12,000.
Ford Edge using coolant, temperature light turning on. Scanner indicates misfiring on cylinder #3. TSB report shows ongoing issue with a cracked cylinder, #3, causing the misfiring and coolant use. Vehicle has only 77K miles on it and maintained by dealership. This is a on going issue that apparently can only be resolved by replacing the engine.
Month of August had my grandkids in the vehicle and my vehicle stalled out in the middle of traffic because it has a coolant leak. I only have a little over 70,000 miles on my 2018 Ford Edge. It is an internal coolant leak. Because it's not leaking on the ground. My understanding you are having a lot of this problem. I also understand that this could catch the vehicle on fire. My son is an auto mechanic and he said y'all are having a lot of problems with this with these vehicles I have to use an old truck for transportation now I am having back problems and hip problems. Please help because I don't have this kind of money to put in a vehicle that has this problem this early in with this low mileage.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while driving at 70 MPH, the vehicle had overheated and vibrated uncontrollably. Once the contact pulled to the side the vehicle had became inoperable. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a dealer to be diagnosed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not covered under the TSB. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 102,000.
Purchased a 2018 ford edge new I’m early 2019. The car has 65k miles and needs a new engine due to coolant leak into cylinder 3. This should be a recall item and Ford refuses to stand by its product. An engine with miles this low should not need replacement.
Coolant leaks into engine cylinders. Symptoms included rough starting, loss of power, white smoke from the exhaust and Check Engine Light. Engine is available for inspection. Safety is comprised as the engine will suddenly lose power while driving. Diagnosis was confirmed by independent service center using Ford TSB 19-2346. Remedy is a complete engine replacement (per TSB). Called Ford Customer Service and they will not replace the engine under the drivetrain warranty (5 years or 60,000 miles) as the vehicle has 85,000 miles. Ford stated I MUST take the vehicle to a Ford dealership for diagnosis at which time they MAY have a financial assistance program which would only pay a percentage of the repair. The percentage is unknown, availability of programs is unknown and they could give me no further information. An internet search will reveal hundreds of owners with the same issue, spanning the 2015 - 2018 Ford Edge model years. I also found two lawsuits currently in the courts concerning this issue. Ford has known about this issue since 2010, they even provided a recall for the 1.5L EcoBoost engine, which is the same type of engine design as the 2.0L EcoBoost engine.
The vehicle was bought in 2023 with 72,000 miles. Within one month, the engine light came on for misfire in cylinder 3. After replacing the spark plugs, with one day, the engine light came back on. It was later diagnosed by Ford dealer that there was coolant leaking into the cylinder. The dealer said it is a "known" problem per Ford for several years. A complete engine replacement was needed. The Ford dealership said they replace engines on Edges on a regular basis. This should be looked into as a recall.

The contact was advised to report the failure to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 91,000.
Coolant leak due to faulty head gaskets from the manufacturer causing cylinder misfires and ultimately engine failure. Dealer inspected and found engine failure and need for total replacement. There were no warning indicators.
Bought used Feb. 2023. End of March cylinder 3 misfire code pops when the check engine light comes on. Replaced all spark plugs and 1 engine coil for cylinder 3. On off until Aug. 9th when the light came back on and I took to Ford Dealership. Paid for a diagnosis and the next day they called and said the coolant is leaking into the engine and this is a “known issue” and I will need a new engine. I have barely put 3,000 miles on top of the miles it came with. Should not have to pay for a new engine with a “known issue”!
