DOOR LOCKS ARE ON ALL 4 DOORS ARE LOCKED AND CANNOT BE OPENED NO ACCESS TO VEHICLE EXCEPT THROUGH THE BACK HATCH OR WINDOWS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH AND ATTEMPTING TO DECELERATE, THE VEHICLE DID NOT RESPOND. THE CONTACT REMOVED FOOT FROM PEDAL HOWEVER THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED TO 60 MPH INDEPENDENTLY. THE CONTACT HAD THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL DEPRESSED AND REMOVED HIS FOOT FROM THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES UNTIL VEHICLE WAS UNDER CONTROL. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE REPAIRED THE VEHICLE HIMSELF. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 115,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH AND ATTEMPTING TO USE THE BRAKES, THE VEHICLE WOULD ACCELERATE INSTEAD OF SLOWING DOWN. THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THE VEHICLE WAS TO SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL AND TURN OFF THE IGNITION. THE DEALER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND SUGGESTED THAT THE HOUSING FOR THE SPEED CONTROL COULD BE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT HER VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 00V210001 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL). SHE FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS INFORMED THAT NOTHING ELSE COULD BE DONE. THE CONTACT ASKED THE DEALER TO UNHOOK THE SPEED CONTROL BECAUSE SHE THOUGHT THAT MAY BE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 88,000. THROTTLE STICKS AT INTERMITTENT TIMES UPON ACCELERATION. INTERMITTENTLY, WHEN FOOT IS REMOVED FROM GAS PEDAL SPEED DOES NOT RESULT IN DECELERATION. WHEN PROBLEM DOES OCCUR THERE IS NO KNOWN WAY OF STOPPING IT. I JUST WAIT IT OUT UNTIL THROTTLE CORRECTS ITSELF. I AM UNABLE TO TELL IF GAS PEDAL REMAINS DEPRESSED WHEN PROBLEM OCCURS. HAVE TRIED PRESSING THROTTLE TO FLOOR QUICKLY AND RELEASING WITH LIMITED SUCCESS. HAVE TRIED PLACING TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL, BUT THAT ONLY CAUSES ENGINE TO RACE. SEEMS TO BE OCCURRING MORE OVER THE LAST FEW DAYS. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE DRIVING BETWEEN 30 -35 MPH, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALER DUE TO FAILURE OF THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. THE CONTACT BELIEVES THAT THE REPAIR SHOULD BE FREE, BUT THE MANUFACTURER DISAGREED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 7,700.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE AND TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL DEALER TO HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED. THE ABS LIGHT ILLUMINATED INTERMITTENTLY. WHEN THE CONTACT EXITED THE VEHICLE, HE COULD SMELL SOMETHING BURNING, BUT DID NOT SEE SMOKE. SHORTLY AFTER, THE ABS LIGHT WENT OUT, THE VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL DID NOT WORK. THE CONTACT REFERENCED THE OWNER'S MANUAL TO CHECK WHICH FUSE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. HE IDENTIFIED THAT THE ABS AND CRUISE CONTROL SHARED THE SAME FUSE. CURRENTLY, EVERYTIME HE REPLACES A FUSE, IT FAILS. THE DEALER INFORMED HIM THAT HIS VEHICLE HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN REPAIRED ACCORDING TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 07V156000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTI-LOCK:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE). HE WAS ADVISED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE IN FOR A DIAGNOSTIC AT THE DEALER THAT PERFORMED THE REPAIR. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 110,000. UPDATED 02/19/10. *LJ THE CONSUMER DISCOVERED THE ABS AND SPEED CONTROL WERE ON THE SAME FUSE, AND THE ABS MODULE WAS BURNED OUT. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH AND ATTEMPTING TO CHANGE LANES, THE VEHICLE VEERED FROM RIGHT TO LEFT. THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO MOVE THE STEERING WHEEL RIGHT AND LEFT, BUT THE WHEEL KEPT MOVING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. THE CONTACT COULD NOT GAIN CONTROL OF THE STEERING WHEEL AND STRUCK A CONCRETE WALL ON THE FRONT PASSENGER CORNER OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS DECLARED DESTROYED BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED INJURIES AND WAS TRANSPORTED TO A LOCAL HOSPITAL. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THERE IS A RECALL ON THIS YEAR, MAKE, AND MODEL VEHICLE, BUT THE CONTACT IS NOT SURE IF THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED. THE RECALL NUMBER WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 45,000. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED, THE ABS COMPUTER SYSTEM BEGAN SMOKING . AN INTENSE ELECTRICAL SMELL WAS PRESENT AND THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE ABS, ECU MODULE, AND THE HCU MODULE WERE DAMAGED. A POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENT REPORT WAS FILED BUT THERE WAS NO FIRE, JUST A LOT SMOKE. PAINT IS PEELING OFF OF THE TAILGATE DOOR OF MY ESCAPE. IT APPEARS TO HAVE NO PRIMER ON IT AT ALL. IT JUST STARTED IN PAST 6 MONTHS. COMING OFF IN BIG CHUNKS. *TR
WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 30 AN 40 MPH, THE CAR SUDDENLY STALLED IN TRAFFIC. ALL ATTEMPTS TO RESTART THE VEHICLE ,BY MYSELF, WERE FOR NAUGHT. A NEARBY GARAGE INITIALLY THOUGHT THE PROBLEM WAS A TIMING BELT ISSUE, BUT FURTHER INVESTIGATION SHOWED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS WITH AN ELECTRICAL HARNESS WITH A POSSIBLE SHORT. A BIT STRANGE FOR A NON-MOVING PART. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE CAUGHT FIRE WHILE PARKED. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED AND EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE INSURANCE COMPANY STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 130,000.
WHILE PARKED IN OUR DRIVEWAY AFTER SITTING FOR ABOUT 3 HOURS A PASSERBY STARTED BANGING ON OUR FRONT DOOR AND SAID WE HAD A FIRE IN OUR DRIVEWAY. SURE ENOUGH OUR 2001 FORD ESCAPE WAS SHOOTING FLAMES FROM THE ENGINE. WE HAD NO IDEA SOMETHING LIKE THIS COULD HAPPEN. AFTER GOING TO THIS SITE AND READING SIMILAR ACCOUNTS OF THE CAR JUST GOING ON FIRE WHILE PARKED WE CAN ONLY ASSUME SOMETHING WAS DEFECTIVE IN THE VEHICLE. THE ABS LIGHT HAD BEEN GOING OFF AND ON RECENTLY. *TR
ON MARCH 2008 OUR 2001 FORD ESCAPE SELF IGNITED IN OUR DRIVEWAY AFTER BEING SHUT OFF FOR OVER 2 HOURS AN INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION STATES" THE FIRE IN THE VEHICLE ORIGINATED AT THE ABS MODULE AND WAS CAUSED BY A MALFUNCTION THAT RESULTED IN AN INTERNAL ELECTRICAL OVERHEATING CONDITION" THE CAR HAD GONE IN FOR ALL RECALLS UP TO THAT DATE. SO EITHER THE REPAIR FAILED OR THERE WAS NO RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM. FORD REFUSES TO INVESTIGATE THEIR CAUSE OF THIS FIRE. *TR
THIS VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A FATAL ONE-CAR CRASH ON I-96 ON MARCH 4, 2008. THE ACCIDENT WAS REPORTED AS LOSS OF CONTROL AT A HIGH SPEED, AND AT THE TIME, THERE WAS NO SUSPICION OF A MECHANICAL ISSUE. THEN IN LATE JULY 2012, THE RECALL NOTICE FOR THE FORD ESCAPE WITH V-6 ENGINES, MODEL YEARS 2001-2004, WAS MADE PUBLIC (RECALL NO. 12S37). WE NOW HAVE CONCERN THAT THIS ACCIDENT MAY HAVE BEEN PRECIPITATED BY A VEHICLE MALFUNCTION. WE HAVE NO EVIDENCE TO THIS; HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE THAT WAS DECLARED 'TOTALED' IS STILL ON THE ROAD AND HAS SINCE BEEN IN ANOTHER ACCIDENT. WE FEEL OBLIGATED TO BRING THIS MATTER TO THE ATTENTION OF THE NHTSA, AND ASK THAT YOU LOOK INTO THIS MATTER FOR THE SAFETY OF OTHERS. .
IN NOV. OF 2006, I TOOK MY 2001 FORD ESCAPE TO THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE MY RIGHT REAR PASSENGER SEATBELT WAS TWISTING AND WAS NOT RETRACTING. MY CHILD'S BOOSTER SEAT WAS HELD WITH THIS BELT AND WAS NOT WORKING. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT DUE TO A FLAW, CONDENSATION WAS ABLE TO GET INSIDE AND THAT IT HAD CAUSED AN INTERNAL SPRING TO RUST AND BREAK. THEY TOLD ME THAT IN 2002 + MODELS, IT WAS REDESIGNED AND THAT COIL OR SPRING IS NOW PROTECTED WITH A PROTECTIVE COVERING. I CALLED FORD MOTOR CORP AND THEY COVERED THE REPAIR AND I HAD TO PAY A $75.00 DEDUCTIBLE. NOW 13 MONTHS LATER, THE SAME PROBLEM HAD RE- OCCURRED. THIS TIME FORD MOTOR CORP. SAYS THEY WILL NOT COVER IT BECAUSE MY VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY. I AGAIN REMINDED THEM THAT THIS FAULTY SEATBELT IS BEING USED TO SECURE MY SEVEN YEAR OLD DAUGHTER'S BOOSTER SEAT AND IT TERRIFIES ME TO THINK OF WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED TO HER IF I WAS IN A SERIOUS COLLISION. FORD DID HAVE A SAFETY SEATBELT RECALL ON A FRONT SEATBELT LATCH AND I COMPLIED AND I THINK THAT WAS IN 2004. I BELIEVE THAT THIS PROBLEM HAS THE PROPENSITY TO LEAD TO A SERIOUS INJURY IF IT IS NOT RESOLVED. *TR
VEHICLE'S # - 2001 FORD ESCAPE .EVERY MORNING I START THE CAR IT HESITATES TO STAY STARTED,(IDEALING) SOMETIMES THE CAR DOES SHUT OFF AND I HAVE TO RESTART THE CAR. I START OUT AND WHEN I GO TO BRAKE THE CAR HESITATES AND WANT TO SHUT OFF AT THE SAME TIME I LOSE MY BRAKES (THEY LOCK UP AND WILL NOT STOP...) THE CAR ALSO SOMETIMES SMELL HOT AFTER DRIVING. ONCE THE CAR HAS BEEN DRIVEN FOR A WHILE THE BRAKES SEEM TO WORK FINE BUT THERE IS STILL A HOT SMELL WHEN WE SHUT THE CAR OFF. I HAVE HAD THIS IN FOR SERVICE MORE THEN ONCE AND THEY HAD ME DO CERTAIN SERVICES ON THE CAR AND THIS STILL HAS NOT FIXED THE PROBLEM, I TOOK BACK IN AFTER SPENDING ENOUGH MONEY AND DOING THE SERVICE THEY SUGGESTED THE MECHANICS KEPT IT FOR A FEW DAYS AND THOUGHT THEY FIXED THE PROBLEM,BUT HERE WE ARE AGAIN(1 YR LATER) AND I'M BACK TO WHERE WE STARTED. I HAVE ALL THE PAPERWORK TO WHAT WAS DONE WITH THE CAR FOR THIS PROBLEM.. SERVICE WAS PERFORMED AS FOLLOWS A. REPLACE INTAKE GASKETS,SPARK PLUGS,DPFE SENSOR. B. FUEL FILTER. C. PERFORM BG PROFESSIONAL FUEL INJECTION CLEANING SERVICE. THE SECOND TIME IN FOR SERVICE- A. 100 DIAG MASS AIR FLOW METER=REC. TUNE UP = FILTERS ADVISE ON PENDG. CODES 0171-0174=POSS. INTAKE LEEK =REPLACE MAF SENSOR=CLEAR CODES. THIS WAS EVERYTHING THEY SUGGESTED WE DO AND NOW AS ITS COLD I'M HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM AS I DID LAST FEBRUARY. CATALYTIC CONVERTERS (ALL3) HAVE GONE BAD, VEHICLE HAS ONLY 90,000 MILES ON IT, VEHICLE BEGAN MISS FIRING SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASE A YEAR AGO. HOWEVER, DEALERSHIP MECHANICS COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. AT TIMES EXHAUST IS CIRCULATED BACK INTO VEHICLE. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED, THE VEHICLE BEGAN SMOKING AND THEN CAUGHT FIRE. THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE QUICKLY BECAME ENGULFED IN FLAMES. SHE ATTEMPTED TO UTILIZE A HOME FIRE EXTINGUISHER; HOWEVER, THE FIRE WOULD NOT GO OUT. THE ENTIRE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE CONTACT IS AWAITING TO HEAR IF THE INSURANCE COMPANY WILL CLASSIFY THE VEHICLE AS DESTROYED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. SHE IS ALSO AWAITING AN INVESTIGATOR FROM THE FIRE DEPARTMENT TO DETERMINE THE ORIGIN OF THE FIRE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT STATED THAT THE SMELL WAS SIMILAR TO THAT OF AN ELECTRICAL FIRE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE LESS THAN 150,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BECAME DIFFICULT TO DEPRESS. THE ENGINE WOULD STILL ACCELERATE ONCE THE CONTACT RELEASED THE PEDAL. HE STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS A RESULT OF THE ACCELERATOR CABLE. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED BY A MECHANIC. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 98,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 101,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN PARK OR IDLING AT A STOP LIGHT, THE ENGINE REVVED. THE CONTACT WOULD HAVE TO SHUT OFF AND RESTART THE VEHICLE IN ORDER TO RESET THE THROTTLE. IN ADDITION, THE REAR HATCH DOOR WOULD OPEN INTERMITTENTLY. AFTER SEVERAL WEEKS, THE REAR HATCH DOES NOT FUNCTION AT ALL. THE DEALER STATED THAT HER VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBERS 00V210001 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL) AND 04V602000 (LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:DOORS:LATCH). THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALER, BUT HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 120,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT BRAKE FLUID LEAKED AROUND THE MASTER CYLINDER, WHICH CAUSED THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO ILLUMINATE. THE VEHICLE MADE A HISSING NOISE COMING FROM THE BRAKES AND THERE WAS A RAPID LOSS OF BRAKE FLUID. SHE ALSO STATED THAT BRAKING BECAME DIFFICULT. THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE BRAKE LIGHT REMAINED ILLUMINATED FOR SIX MONTHS, DIMMED FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS, BUT THEN ILLUMINATED AGAIN. WHEN SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 07V156000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE), THE DEALER STATED THAT THE MASTER CYLINDER AND BOOSTER (BECAUSE OF THE LEAK) ALSO NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE PURCHASE DATE WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 142,129 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,080.

APPROXIMATELY TWO DAYS LATER, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE BRAKES WERE STILL NOT WORKING PROPERLY. HE RETURNED TO THE DEALER AND THEY WOULD NOT RE-INSPECT THE VEHICLE, HOWEVER, THEY STATED THAT THEY WOULD MAKE A REPAIR THAT WAS IDENTICAL TO THE PREVIOUS REPAIR. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 55,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 58,000.
OIL COOLER FAILED, OIL WAS BURNT OFF WITH NO CHECK OIL LIGHT OR ENGINE NOTICE AND ENGINE FAILURE OCCURRED. ENGINE THREW A ROD AND THE ENGINE NEEDED REPLACEMENT. *JB

SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE MECHANIC AND THEY STATED THAT THE CAUSE OF FAILURE WAS THE TRANSMISSION. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 68,308. DRIVER'S SIDE OUTSIDE DOOR HANDLE FAILS TO WORK. UPON DISASSEMBLY, WE FOUND THAT THE PART THAT CONNECTED THE HANDLE MECHANISM TO THE LOCK MECHANISM WAS A FLIMSY THIN METAL WASHER, WHICH HAD BROKE IN HALF. BRAKE PROBLEM INVOVING ABS SENSOR RING ON FRONT WHEELS. THIS WHEEL RING LITERALLY CRACKED CAUSING THE ABS LIGHT TO COME ON AND THE BRAKE PEDAL HAD TO BE PRESSED TO THE FLOOR TO OPERATE THE BRAKES. I RECENTLY TOOK MY 2001 FORD ESCAPE IN FOR SERVICE FOR RECALL #07S51. WHILE A PARTIAL REPAIR HAS BEEN COMPLETED THE PARTS TO COMPLETE THE REPAIR TOTALLY WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE UNTIL AUGUST. WHILE FORD STATES THE VEHICLE IS OK TO DRIVE THEY INFORMED ME NOT TO PARK NEAR STRUCTURES OR INSIDE GARAGES UNTIL THE REPAIR IS COMPLETED IN AUGUST, THEY CANNOT BE HELD LIABLE IF I DO SO. THE ALARMS IN HER HOUSE WARNED HER OF THE FIRE. SHE CALLED THE LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENT, AND THEY FOUND NO FIRE IN THE HOUSE. THEY THEN CHECKED THE GARAGE AND THEY SMELLED SOMETHING BURNING. THE FIREMAN OPENED AND NOTICED THE WIRES THAT WERE BURNING UNDER THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO TOWN AND COUNTRY, AND THEY INFORMED HER THAT OLD BRAKE FLUID LEAKED ON THE ABS, WHICH WAS THE CAUSE OF THE WIRES BURNING. THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED FOR THE ABS LIGHT COMING ON, AND OFF AT THE LOCAL FIRESTONE, THEY REPLACED THE MASTER CYLINDER . THE WIRES BURNED WITHIN 24 HOURS OF THE REPAIR. THE TOWN AND COUNTRY DEALERSHIP GAVE THE CONTACT A LOANER VEHICLE, AND SHE FELT THIS WAS ODD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DEALERSHIP INFORMED HER THAT IT WOULD COST $2,416.12 TO REPAIR THE WIRES AND THE ABS. I RAN OVER AND POPPED THE HOOD AND THERE WAS SMOKE COMING FROM MY ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM ELECTRONIC CONTROL SYSTEM. I PUSHED THE CAR OUT OF MY GARAGE FEARING A HOUSE FIRE AND A FRIEND UNHOOKED MY BATTERY . WHEN THE SMOKING AND SPARKING SUBSIDED THE ABS CONTROL BOX WAS MELTED AND ALL THE WIRES WERE BURNED AND MELTED. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP TO SEE IF THERE WERE ANY RECALLS AT THIS TIME AND THEY TOLD ME NO. I GOOGLED CONSUMER REPORTS AND SAW AN ARTICLE THAT THIS WAS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT AND THAT YOU WERE INVESTIGATING 8 OTHER SIMILAR INCIDENTS. IT HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED AS IT HAS JUST HAPPENED AND HONESTLY IS SEEMS TO BE QUITE EXPENSIVE TO REMEDY.
