MY WIFE GOT INTO HER ESCAPE TO RETURN HOME AND IT WOULD NOT RUN PROPERLY. IT WAS MISSING BADLY AND LACKED ADEQUATE POWER TO PULL ITSELF. I TOOK MY ESCAPE TO THE REPAIR SHOP AND WAS APPAULED BY THEIR FINDINGS. I AM GOING TO QUOTE DIRECTLY FROM THE DIAGNOSTIC REPORT I RECEIVED. "SOME ESCAPE/MARINER VEHICLES BUILT ON OR BEFORE 10/3/2005 , EQUIPPED WITH A 3.0L ENGINE MAY EXHIBIT A MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL) ON WITH TWO OR MORE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTC'S) FOR COIL ON PLUG (COP) PRIMARY CIRCUIT FAULTS (P0351-P0356). THIS MAY BE DUE TO THE COP AND POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) REACTING TO RADIO FREQUENCY INTERFERENCE FROM THE SPARK PLUGS." MY REPAIR TECHNICIAN TOLD ME THAT THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH VEHICLES LIKE MINE. AFTER SEARCHING THE WEB, I FOUND ONE PERSON WHOSE ESCAPE DIED WHILE ON THE INTERSTATE AND DURING HEAVY TRAFFIC AND PLENTY OF OTHERS WITH SIMILAR CIRCUMSTANCES. I SUPPOSE I WAS LUCKY BECAUSE MY PROBLEM HAPPENED IN A PARKING LOT. I HAD TO REPLACE MY POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE AND ALL SIX COILS AT A COST OF OVER $1200. I SAVED LABOR COSTS BY DOING THE WORK MYSELF, BUT OTHERS I READ ABOUT DIDN'T HAVE THE SAME FATE. MY TECHNICIAN ALSO TOLD ME THEY HAVE SEEN THIS PROBLEM NUMEROUS TIMES AND THAT I SHOULD SAVE MY RECEIPTS BECAUSE FORD MAY ISSUE A RECALL. MY VEHICLE WENT FROM RUNNING PERFECTLY TO NOT RUNNING AT ALL WITHOUT ANY WARNING. I HAD TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION IN THIS SAME VEHICLE AT ONLY 37000 MILES, BUT THAT'S ANOTHER STORY. NEEDLESS TO SAY I AM EXTREMELY DISSAPPOINTED. *TT
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A MECHANIC FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TEST. THE TEST RESULTS SHOWED A DEFECT IN THE ENGINE CAUSING THE CYLINDERS TO MISFIRE. THE MECHANIC NOTICED A CYLINDER WAS CRACKED AND REPLACED THE DAMAGED CYLINDER. THE REPAIR DID NOT REMEDY THE MISFIRING. THE DEALER PERFORMED ANOTHER DIAGNOSTIC TEST. THE SECOND TEST RESULTS SHOWED THAT ALL OF THE CYLINDERS WERE MISFIRING AND THE COMPUTER HAD MALFUNCTIONED. THE CONTACT HAD REPLACED THE COILS SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE TAKING THE VEHICLE TO A MECHANIC. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 124,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHAKE VIGOROUSLY AND STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE TECHNICIAN ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT COIL PACK NUMBER ONE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 71,000.
THE REAR WINDOW OF MY 2005 FORD ESCAPE BLEW OUT WITH NO WARNING. I PRE-STARTED THE CAR FOR APPROX. 3 MINS, TURNING ON THE HEAT AND DEFROST. I LEFT MY DRIVEWAY AND NO MORE THAT A HALF A MILE AWAY THE REAR WINDOW EXPLODED, BLASTING GLASS THROUGHOUT THE ROADWAY AND CAR. THE ONLY INJURIES I HAD WERE TO MY NECK. PIECES OF GLASS STRUCK MY NECK CAUSING TWO MINOR LACERATIONS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT IN AN ATTEMPT TO START THE VEHICLE, THE VEHICLE WOULD BEGIN TO SMOKE AND STALL WITHOUT WARNING. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THAT THERE WAS A SHORT IN THE SPARK PLUGS, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO STALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THIS VEHICLE WILL GO INTO "FAIL-SAFE" MODE, WHICH SHUTS THE IC ENGINE OFF WHILE YOU'RE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. IT HAPPENS VERY INTERMITTENTLY AND NOT IN ANY CONSISTENT PATTERN. ONCE IT HAPPENS, IT CONTINUES TO OCCUR UNLESS THE CAR COOLS OFF COMPLETELY. HAPPENS ONLY WHEN CAR IS USED FOR LONG TRIPS. MULTIPLE FAULT CODES SHOW UP ON THE COMPUTER, AND BASED ON THOSE FAULT CODES, I'VE HAD THE HYBRID COOLANT PUMP REPLACED, THE AIR FILTER FOR THE BATTERIES REPLACED, AND THE FANS THAT COOL THE BATTERY REPLACED. I'VE HAD MULTIPLE TRIPS TO BOTH FORD DEALERSHIP SERVICE AND EXCELLENT INDEPENDENT MECHANICS (WHO WERE BLOCKED ON THE FORD TECHNICAL WEBSITE, EVEN THOUGH THESE INDEPENDENT MECHANICS SUBSCRIBE, FROM FINISHING THEIR RESEARCH INTO REPAIR OPTIONS) WITH THE FINAL RESULTS THAT THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING TO REPAIR IT. OTHER THAN THIS PROBLEM, IT'S A VERY NICE VEHICLE....... BUT, I'M VERY NERVOUS THAT THIS SHUT-DOWN WILL OCCUR IN FAST, HEAVY TRAFFIC WHERE I CANNOT GET TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD SAFELY AND CAUSE A HORRIBLE ACCIDENT AND LOSS OF LIFE...... INCLUDING MY OWN OR MY FAMILY. I CANNOT KEEP THIS VEHICLE LONGER...... BUT, IF I TRADE IT OFF.... IT'S ONLY GOING TO BE SOMEONE ELSE'S PROBLEM. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A RECALL ISSUE FOR FORD. GO ONLINE, AND YOU CAN FIND MANY PEOPLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM, SEVERAL OF WHICH HAVE HAD TERRIFYING EXPERIENCES WITH THIS PROBLEM. FORTUNATELY, MOST OF MY DRIVING WITH THIS VEHICLE IS ON 2-LANE STATE HIGHWAYS WHERE I CAN PULL OFF WHEN THIS HAPPENS. IN THE MIDDLE OF 80-MPH LA TRAFFIC ON A 6 LANE FREEWAY..... IN THE MIDDLE LANE...... I SHUDDER TO THINK. I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE IN DECEMBER, 2011, AND WILL BE GIVING SOMEONE ELSE THE PROBLEM SOON, AS I CANNOT CONTINUE TO SPEND MONEY ON A VEHICLE THAT NO ONE IS CAPABLE OF FIXING, AND I CANNOT KEEP IT WITH THIS PROBLEM. *TR
PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT IN QUESTION THE CAR HAD A FEW DAYS OF ABNORMAL BEHAVIOR INCLUDING HESITATION AND ROUGH IDLE. THE INCIDENT OCCURRED ON CHRISTMAS EVE WHILE I WAS DRIVING DOWN A TWO LANE HIGHWAY. WHILE TRAVELING 50 MPH THE CAR LOST POWER AND ALTHOUGH I WAS TERRIBLY SCARED, I MANAGED TO GET OFF THE HIGHWAY SAFELY. I WAS TOLD THAT THE COMPUTER FAILED (PCM) WHICH IS VERY EXPENSIVE TO FIX HENCE THE REASON IT HAS BEEN ALMOST A YEAR. I AM A RETIRED WIDOW RAISING MY 12 YEAR OLD GRANDDAUGHTER FEELING STUCK BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE; NOT ABLE TO AFFORD THE REPAIRS AND UNABLE TO DO THINGS WITHOUT A CAR. I SEE THAT MANY MANY OTHERS HAVE HAD THIS SAME ISSUE, PLEASE HELP FORD FACE THEIR NEGLECT WITH REGARD TO THIS ISSUE. THANK YOU *TR
OUR FORD ESCAPE 2005'S AIRBAG LIGHT IS FLASHING ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE DASHBOARD. WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL REPAIR FACILITY AND THEY INFORMED US THAT THE AIRBAGS ARE NOW DISABLED, DUE TO THIS PROBLEM, AND THAT THE PART ALONE WILL COST US $1400.00, PLUS THE COST OF THE SERVICE. AFTER RECEIVING THIS INFORMATION, WE SEARCHED THE WEB AND FOUND THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS JUST LIKE THIS ABOUT FORD ESCAPES, RANGING FROM THE YEARS 2003-2006. WE BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND SHOULD BE COVERED BY FORD AS SUCH, BUT THEY DO NOT AGREE. I EMAILED THEM ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND THEY TOLD US THAT YOU ARE THE AGENCY THAT GOVERNS ALL SUCH CONCERNS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO DECELERATE AT 55 MPH, THE VEHICLE LOST ALL POWER. THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE CHECK ENGINE, OIL, AND ABS WARNING LIGHTS WERE ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT THE COILS AND PCM FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. NO REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED. THE CURRENT AND THE FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 100,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
I AM JUST GLAD THAT WHEN THE CAR DIED, I WAS JUST PULLING INTO A PARKING GARAGE. ALL I COULD THINK OF WAS WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED IF I WAS GOING THE 55 MPH SPEED LIMIT MINUTES EARLIER. VERY HEAVY BRAKING, MANUAL STEERING. I THINK FORD WANTS SOMEONE TO DIE IN A FEW CRASHES BEFORE THEY WILL COME OUT WITH A RECALL. I HAD TO WAIT 2 WEEKS FOR A RE-MANUFACTURED COMPUTER AS THEY WERE HEAVILY BACK-ORDERED. THIS INDICATES THAT A LOT MORE PEOPLE THAN JUST 32 OR SO HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM. I HAD TO PAY FOR 3 WEEKS OR CAR RENTALS AND ONLY GOT TO PAY WHAT I DID BECAUSE OF FAMILY TIES TO THE FORD DEALER. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN OVER $2800 DOLLARS IF PARTS AND LABOR WERE CHARGED RETAIL. FORD KNEW THERE WERE PROBLEMS BY ISSUING TWO TBS, YET THEY PREFERRED TO LET US PAY FOR THEIR ERROR. I FOUND OUT THAT FORD MAY REPAIR IT IF IT HAD LESS THAN 80,000 MILES AND LESS THAN 8 YEARS OLD. HOW MANY PEOPLE NEED TO BE IN ACCIDENTS BEFORE THIS VEHICLE IS RECALLED? *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED, HE ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE FURTHER BUT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS STUCK. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BEGAN TO OPERATE AS NORMAL AFTER WAITING A FEW MOMENTS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO HAVE THE FAILURE DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. DRIVING ABOUT 30 MPH DOWN THE STREET WITH MY MOTHER AND HEARD A VERY LOUD CRASH ALMOST LIKE A TREE LIMB FALLING ONTO THE CAR. THE REAR WINDOW HAD COMPLETELY SHATTERED WHILE WE WERE DRIVING. THERE WAS SHATTERED GLASS EVERYWHERE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE TRUCK. *TR

#5 SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT OF CYL HEAD CAUSING MINOR FIRE FROM FUEL IN CYLINDER WHEN INJECTOR FIRED. COULD HAVE BEEN MAJOR, HAVE HEARD MANY OTHER FORD OWNERS WITH SAME PROBLEM. *TT
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE THROTTLE BECAME STUCK AND HE HAD TO USE EXTREME FORCE BEFORE THE VEHICLE WOULD DRIVE NORMALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE WHO DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN ANY RECALLS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 103,000.
1. ON OR NEAR NOVEMBER 19, 2011, A SPRING FROM THE CLUTCH PEDAL BROKE. IT SEEMS TO BE ONE THAT RETURNS THE PEDAL TO ITS DEFAULT POSITION AS I HAVE TO LIFT UP ON IT FROM BENEATH WITH MY FOOT TO GET IT BACK TO ITS REGULAR HEIGHT. I'M CONCERNED THAT IT MAY CAUSE PREMATURE WEAR ON THE CLUTCH IF IT DOES NOT RETURN TO ITS STANDARD REST POSITION. THE SPRING BROKE WHILE THE CAR WAS PARKED BEFORE DRIVING. --------------------------------- 2. IN LATE 2011, I BEGAN TO NOTICE THE DRIVER'S SEAT BELT BEGIN TO FRAY ON THE BOTTOM (LAP SIDE). THIS IS MY FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH A SEAT BELT WEARING OUT, AND I GENERALLY KEEP MY VEHICLES AT LEAST TEN YEARS (ALL PREVIOUSLY OWNED). IN MY 2005 FORD ESCAPE XLT V6 3.0L ON 11/16/11, I WAS DRIVING EAST BOUND ON I55 TOWARDS CHICAGO AT APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH WHEN THE ENGINE STARTED BAD MISFIRING AND THE COMPLETELY DIED (NO POWER OR ENGINE). WITH NO POWER STEERING AND NO BRAKES, I ATTEMPTED TO STEERED TOWARD THE SHOULDER. I WAITED ABOUT 10 MINUTES AND TRIED TO RESTART AND WAS UNABLE. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO ROESCH FORD 333 W GRAND AVE BENSENVILLE, IL 60106. I WAS ADVISED BY THE SERVICE MANAGER THAT THE ENGINE WAS MISFIRING ON 4 OF THE 6 CYLINDERS AND THAT THEY WOULD NEED TO REPLACE THE PCM, 6 COILS, 6 PLUGS AND CALIBRATE, TOTAL $2,114.21. I DECIDED TO DO SOME RESEARCH ONLINE AND FOUND NUMEROUS PEOPLE EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM. THERE ARE MULTIPLE TSB: TSB 05-11-1,TSB 09-02-06 TSB 09-02-06 AND TSB 10-18-10. THE PROBLEM IS: THE WRONG SPARK PLUGS WERE INSTALLED AT THE FACTORY. THIS COMBO OF WRONG PLUGS CAUSES THE COILS TO SEND EMI/RFI BACK TO THE PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE) BURNING OUT THE PCM.EMI/RFI IS EMITTED FROM SPARKING DEVICE,IN THIS CASE A SET OF BAD SPARK PLUGS. THIS CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO MISS-FIRE, LOSE POWER, OR IN MANY CASES, HAVE TOTAL ENGINE FAILURE. WRONG SPARK PLUGS/BAD COP'S/UN-SHIELDED PCM BOX/POORLY ENGINEERED & UN-TESTED, MULTI-CHANGED, RARE PCM AND IT'S THE $12.50 RADIO FREQUENCY INTERFERENCE DEVICE. THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY RESTARTED INDEPENDENTLY. THE FAILURE RECURRED INTERMITTENTLY AS THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE SPEEDS UP 10 TO 15 MPH BY ITSELF FOR 5 TO 7 SECONDS WHEN CRUISE CONTROL IS ACTIVATED AND, THEN, SLOWS DOWN TO ORIGINAL SET SPEED. WHEN THIS HAPPENS, THE GAS PEDAL GOES ALL THE WAY DOWN AND KICK BACK WHEN IT RELEASES AND MAKING SOUNDS WHEN HITS HARD THE SHOE. IT HAS BEEN HAPPENING SINCE NOVEMBER 2011 ONLY WHEN CRUISE CONTROL IS BEING USE AND NOT ALL THE TIME. IT HAPPENS AT LEAST 2 EACH MONTH SINCE THEN. IT WAS REPORTED JULY 18 AROUND 9:45AM TO FORD MOTOR COMPANY AFTER RECALL NEWS ABOUT FORD ESCAPES 2002-2004 WITH V6 ENGINES (LIKE MINE) SUFFER FROM MECHANICAL FLAW THAT LEADS TO SUDDEN ACCELERATION. AT THE TIME, THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR MY VIN. *TR
DRIVING DOWN HIGHWAY WHEN ENGINE FAILED, LUCKILY WAS ABLE TO GET RESTARTED & DRIVE INTO TOWN 10 MILES. ONLY ABLE TO DRIVE 40 MPH WHILE MOTOR SPUTTERED & TRIED TO DIE WHEN STOPPED AT LIGHT. TOWED TO AUTO REPAIR LOT & TOLD HAD 3 IGNITION COILS BAD. COMPUTER CHECK LATER REVEALED PCM BAD IN 3 SPOTS & WILL COST $700 TO REPAIR. OTHER MODELS HAVE HAD RECALLS & SO SHOULD THE 2005 FOR THE PCM. OWNERS SHOULD NOT BE FORCED TO HAVE SUCH EXPENSE, IF PART IS KNOWN TO FAIL.....NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS FILED ON-LINE ABOUT 2005 FORD ESCAPES. WITH 2 MINOR CHILDREN, I CANNOT AFFORD TO LOSE POWER WHILE DRIVING, OR WILL HAVE A MAJOR TRAFFIC ACCIDENT. I WAS LUCKY IN THIS CASE & WILL NEVER OWN ANOTHER FORD. IF FORD KNOWS OF THE PROBLEM, PLEASE HOLD THEM RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS!! IT WILL TAKE OVER A MONTH TO GET THE PCM REMANUFACTURED & RE-INSTALLED. RUBBING SOUND COMING FROM LEFT FRONT (DRIVER'S SIDE) WHEEL WELL. DIAGNOSED BY FORD AS A "LOOSE" WHEEL BEARING. SOUNDS MORE LIKE A FAILURE. FORD CHARGED $47 TO "DIAGNOSE" THE PROBLEM. SEEMS LIKE MAYBE THEY ALREADY KNEW WHAT IT MIGHT BE AND LET 3 TECHS SOAK UP SOME CLOCK TIME ON THIS ONE. THE ORIGINAL CHARGE WAS QUOTED AT $95 SO I GUESS WE GOT OFF BETTER THAN SOME. *TT

DRIVING ALONG INTERSTATE ENGINE SUDDENLY LOST POWER, WOULD NOT GO ABOVE 20MPH, NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. 2005 FORD ESCAPE WITH A RUSTED OUT RIGHT REAR WHEEL WELL AROUND THE UPPER SHOCK MOUNT. I CHECKED WITH A FORD DEALER ABOUT ANY RECALLS, NONE. FORD MANAGER SAID THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN SUCH AN ISSUE AT LASCO FORD FENTON MI. (FORD EST. TO REPAIR WAS 3400.00) I STOPPED AT A COUPLE BODYSHOPS IN THE AREA AND THEY (KNEW) OF THIS PROBLEM AND COULD QUOTE ME THE PARTS NEEDED, ALONG WITH THE 25 HOURS TO REPLACE/REPAIR IT. MY ESCAPE IS 7 YEARS OLD AND HAS 115,000 MILES, HOWEVER I DON'T THINK THAT THE BODY STRUCTURE (IN WHEEL WELL) SHOULD HAVE RUSTED COMPLETELY AWAY (RIGHT SIDE ONLY?), LEAVING THE TOP SHOCK MOUNT FLAPPING BACK AND FORTH, MAKING THE VEHICLE UNSAFE AND (NOT) DRIVABLE. THIS PROBLEM ENDED UP COSTING 2005.00 TO REPAIR. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED. THIS 2005 ESCAPE FAILED WHEN DRIVING THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. FORD HAS DOCUMENTED THAT SPARK PLUGS INSTALLED BY FORD AT THE FACTORY CAN CAUSE ALL COILS AND THE PCM TO FAIL AS THEY DID IN THIS CASE. THREE TSB'S HAVE BEEN GENERATED RELATED TO THIS PROBLEM. MY CAR WAS REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY AT APPROXIMATELY 60000 MILES AND THE PLUGS WERE NOT CHECKED AND REPLACED AS REQUIRED IN THE FORD TSB'S. THIS WAS AN EXPENSIVE $2300 + REPAIR THAT FORD SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR. GOOD FAITH WAS NOT DEMONSTRATED IN SOLVING THIS PROBLEM AND FORD REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THEIR RESPONSIBILITY. *TR
ACCELERATOR GETS STUCK WITHOUT WARNING. I WAS ALMOST REAR ENDED BECAUSE I COULD NOT MOVE AT THE STOP LIGHT. I PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR, STOMPED IT, AND IT WOULD NOT WORK. I COULD NOT PRESS THE ACCELERATOR AND MAKE IT WORK. EVENTUALLY IT UNFROZEN AND I WAS ABLE TO MOVE. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS, IT HAS DONE IT AT TIMES WHEN I WAS ON THE ROAD AND I COULDN'T MOVE. *TR

WITHOUT PRIOR NOTICE OR CONCERN, THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM COMPLETELY STOPPED WORKING. UPON EXAMINATION BY A FORD DEALER IT HAS BEEN DETERMINED THAT THE POWER STEERING RACK ASSEMBLY AND POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE SIMULTANEOUSLY FAILED CAUSING THE ISSUE. DURING ROUTINE DRIVING AT NORMAL SPEEDS THIS FAILURE COULD CAUSE A DRIVER TO LOSE FULL CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE DUE TO THE LACK OF ADEQUATE STEERING ASSISTANCE. *KB
DASHBOARD BACK LIGHTING FAILED CAUSING LEFT SIDE DASH BLACKOUT OF TEMPERATURE GAUGE & LEFT SIDE OF SPEEDOMETER. RADIO BACK LIGHTING FAILED CAUSING A BLACKOUT OF THE LEFT SIDE RADIO BUTTONS. *TR
THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND WOULD NOT START. I RECEIVED WARNINGS ON THE DASH AND THE INFORMATION PANEL STATING TO SLOW TO A STOP AND SERVICE THE BRAKES. I WAS ABLE TO START THE VEHICLE AFTER DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY AND EVERYTHING OPERATED NORMALLY. AFTER GETTING HOME AND RUNNING DIAGNOSTICS EVERYTHING CAME BACK NORMAL. LATER THAT DAY THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START AGAIN WITH THE SAME WARNINGS AND IT WAS MORE AND MORE DIFFICULT TO GET THE VEHICLE WORKING AGAIN. I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE 12V BATTERY SEEMED TO BE LEAKING SO I INSPECTED AND CLEANED IT. THE NEXT DAY (MONDAY) I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO THE FORD DEALER AND EXPLAINED THE PROBLEMS INCLUDING THE LEAKING BATTERY. THE DEALER REPLACED THE 12 V BATTERY UNDER WARRANTY AND SAID MY PROBLEMS SHOULD BE FIXED BUT THEY WOULD CHECK FOR FAULT CODES. THE DEALER FOUND ADDITIONAL PROBLEMS WITH THE ABS BRAKE SYSTEM BUT COULD NOT IMMEDIATELY DIAGNOSE THE CAUSE. THE CAR WAS LEFT FOR ANOTHER DAY AND EVENTUALLY I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS MOST LIKELY THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT (HCU) WITH WAS APPROXIMATELY A $4500 PART. I HAVE READ STORIES ONLINE THAT THIS IS A FAIRLY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL YEAR ESCAPE HYBRID AND FORD IS AWARE OF THE ISSUE BUT NOT DOING ANYTHING TO CORRECT IT OTHER THAN MAKING THE OWNERS BUY $4500 REPLACEMENT PARTS. *TT
THERE WAS A LEAK OF SOME FLUID NOTED IN MY DRIVEWAY, AND A REQUEST WAS MADE FOR THE DEALER TO INVESTIGATE DURING THE NEXT ROUTINE SERVICE. NO LEAK WAS FOUND. *TR AT 110,000 MILES, DURING ROUTINE SERVICE, A LEAK WAS NOTICED BY THE MECHANIC, BUT NO SOURCE WAS FOUND. SOME TIME AFTER THAT, A NOISE BEGAN TO DEVELOP IN THE FRONT END. AT 120,000 MILES, THE NOISE WAS SEVERE, AND AN INSPECTION DETERMINED THAT THE PTU WAS FAILING. I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS OKAY TO DRIVE UNTIL THE PART ARRIVED. THE NOISE GOT WORSE WITHIN A FEW HUNDRED MILES, CHANGED TO A VIBRATION, AND THEN AN OCCASIONAL CLUNKING NOISE. I STOPPED DRIVING THE VEHICLE, AWAITING THE REPLACEMENT PART. I HAVE SINCE BECOME AWARE OF TSB 09-4-4 MAR 09 DRIVETRAIN - FLUID LEAK FROM PTU VENT. I FEEL THAT THIS MAY HAVE BEEN THE SOURCE OF THE REPORTED LEAK, AND THAT LOSS OF FLUID IN THE PTU LED TO THE FAILURE OF THE PTU, WHICH ONLY HOLDS 12 OUNCES OF FLUID. THIS LEAKAGE SHOULD HAVE BEEN DETECTED BY THE DEALER, AND THE LOSS OF MY PTU MIGHT HAVE BEEN PREVENTED. THESE PTUS FAIL PREMATURELY, AND ARE CONSISTENTLY ON BACK ORDER. MY DEALER HAD ANOTHER UNIT IN FOR THE SAME PTU REPLACEMENT WHEN I PICKED MINE UP AFTER THE REPAIR, AND ACKNOWLEDGES REPLACING MANY. FORD SHOULD COVER THE COST OF THE REPLACEMENT PTU, A SIMPLE MECHANICAL DEVICE THAT SHOULD LAST LONGER THAN THE CAR, CERTAINLY AS LONG AS OTHER DRIVELINE COMPONENTS LIKE THE REAR END, SEVERAL HUNDRED THOUSAND MILES.
ABS LIGHT AND BRAKE LIGHT WENT ON HEARD A BEEP AND HAD NO BRAKES WHAT SO EVER . I EVENTUALLY STOPPED BY ENTERING THE CAR IN TO NEUTRAL AND HITTING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. CATALYTIC CONVERTERS AND FLEX PIPE THE CATALYTIC CONVERTERS HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED AS HAVING SIGNIFICANT RESTRICTION TO CAUSE DRAMATIC POWER LOSS TO THE VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING. THIS CONDITION CAUSES ABNORMAL BACK PRESSURES IN THE EXHAUST SYSTEM WHICH ALSO CAUSES MULTIPLE MISFIRES AND SETS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. THE FLEX PIPE IS ALSO DEFECTIVE AND LEAKS. I HAVE OWNED MANY FORD VEHICLES THROUGH THE YEARS. ONE WAS A 1994 LINCOLN TOWN CAR WITH OVER 400,000 MILES. ANOTHER WAS A 1998 TOWN CAR WITH OVER 200,000 MILES. NEVER ONCE DID I HAVE TO REPLACE ANYTHING ON THE EXHAUST SYSTEM,ESPECIALLY CATALYTIC CONVERTERS (THE MOST EXPENSIVE PART IN THE SYSTEM). I HAVE @75000 MILES ON MY FORD ESCAPE HYBRID 4WD. I STARTED HEARING A NOISE AND STRONG VIBRATION IN THE STEERING WHEEL AT 50 MPH AND A NOISE AS I SLOW DOWN. I TOOK IT IN TO THE DEALERSHIP I HAVE ALWAYS TAKEN MY CAR TO AND THEY EVENTUALLY DIAGNOSED IT AS BEING THE TRANSFER CASE. ON SEPT 15, 2011, THE DEALERSHIP SAID AT THAT TIME TO REPLACE THE TRANSFER CASE WOULD BE @$1500-1600. THE DEALERSHIP ALSO SAID IT WAS BACK ORDERED UNTIL OCT 10, 2011. THEY SAID IT OBVIOUSLY WAS A PROBLEM WITH MANY ESCAPES SINCE IT WAS BACK ORDERED AT FORD. I HAVE ASKED FORD TO PAY FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE TRANSFER CASE AND THEY HAVE REFUSED. LOUD SQUEAKY NOISE FROM RIGHT FRONT END. TOOK TO MECHANIC. THEY SAY BOTH FRONT GREASE BOOTS ARE CRACKED WHICH ALLOWS DIRT, DUST, ETC. TO GET IN AND UP AROUND THE BALL JOINTS AND TIE ROD ASSEMBLIES. THE RIGHT FRONT BALL JOINT HAD GONE BAD DUE TO THIS BOOT CRACK SO WE HAD TO REPLACE IT. THEY RECOMMEND REPLACING BOTH TIE RODS, BOOTS AND BALL JOINTS, BUT WE COULD ONLY AFFORD TO REPLACE THE BALL JOINT THAT WAS BAD AT THIS TIME BECAUSE WE JUST SPENT $3350 PUTTING A NEW TRANSMISSION IN THE CAR. THIS VEHICLE HAS LESS THAN 50,000 MILES ON IT. UNBELIEVABLE!!!! WHAT IS FORD BUILDING THESE CARS WITH??? AS THE FREEWAY BEGAN TO RISE, MY CAR SLOWED DOWN EVEN MORE. I THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO ROLL BACKWARD. I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO DIE AND KILL OTHERS. IT WAS A NIGHTMARE. I HAD TO FEVERISHLY PUMP THE GAS PEDAL TO GET IT TO THE DEALERSHIP. TODAY (8/4/11) THEY CALLED TO TELL ME THAT THE THROTTLE BODY HAD GONE BAD. I LOOKED IT UP ONLINE, AND IT'S NOT A PART THAT 'GOES BAD'...BUT IT DOES REQUIRE CLEANING. UNFORTUNATELY MAINTENANCE OF THE THROTTLE BODY IS NOT A PART OF FORD'S MAINTENANCE PROTOCOL. I READ MANY OTHER HARROWING STORIES OF PEOPLE WHO HAD NEAR MISSES BECAUSE OF THROTTLE BODY MALFUNCTION. AT LEAST A COUPLE OF PEOPLE EVEN HAD WRECKS. EVENTUALLY SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET KILLED. AFTER EXTINGUISHING THE FIRE, I CALLED THE LOCAL SANTA MARIA FORD DEALER, WHO ONLY OFFERED OUR SERVICE DEPARTMENT WILL BE OPEN TOMORROW. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER THAT DAY AND WHILE THERE DECIDED TO HAVE MY WIFE LOOK AT A NEW CAR. REGARDLESS OF THE FACT THAT I PUT THE FLAMES OUT EARLY AND I AS A MAINTENANCE OFFICER WITH 24 YEARS EXPERIENCE I COULD HAVE FIXED THE CAR, I WANTED MY WIFE TO HAVE A NEW CAR SO WHEN I LEAVE HER BEHIND FOR MY NEXT DUTY STATION IN THE MARINE CORPS AND DEPLOY, I WOULD NOT HAVE ANY WORRIES. FROM RESEARCH EARLIER ESCAPE MODELS HAVE A HISTORY OF ENGINE FIRES, AND SOME OF THE LATER, BUT NOTHING TO DATE ON THE 2005. FORD CORPORATE HAS YET TO CONTACT ME ABOUT MY COMPLAINT, I AM ASKING THEM TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM AND HOPE THEY WOULD COMPENSATE ME FOR THE LOST VALUE IN MY TRADE IN DUE TO SOME TYPE OF OBVIOUS DEFECT IN THEIR PRODUCT. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 35 MPH WHEN HE NOTICED THAT THE PEDAL OF THE ACCELERATOR HAD BECOME STUCK TO THE FLOORBOARD. HE HAD TO PLACE HIS FOOT UNDER THE ACCELERATOR FOR IT TO RELEASE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY NEEDED TO REPLACE A SPRING IN THE PEDAL. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND THEY STATED THAT THEY DID NOT HAVE ANY REPORT ON THE DEFECT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 69,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE 82,000.
THIS COMPLAINT IS FOR A 2005 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE DRIVING AS ABOUT 45MPH, SUDDENLY THE CAR TURNED OFF, I IMMEDIATELY PUT IT ON NEUTRAL AND TUNED THE KEY AND IT STARTED UP AGAIN. ABOUT 10 SECONDS LATER IT DID THE SAME THING. I PARKED THE CAR, TURNED IT OFF AND ON AND IT STARTED MISFIRING AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TURNED ON. THE VERY NEXT MORNING I TOOK THE CAR IN FOR A CHECK UP TO A CERTIFIED MECHANIC IN WHICH I WAS TOLD THAT THE COILS AND SPARK PLUGS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE PARTS WERE ORDERED AND INSTALLED BUT STILL THE MISFIRE WAS PRESENT. THIS VEHICLE HAS HAD ONLY ONE OWNER AND A VERY SYSTEMATIC MAINTENANCE THROUGHOUT IT?S LIFE SO FAR. ONLINE I HAVE FOUND SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME EXACT THING AND ALL ADVISED THAT THE PCM WAS NON-FUNCTIONING. FORD HAS HAD ISSUES WITH THESE PARTS IN THE PAST BUT NO RECALL HAS BEEN MADE. PCM SHOULD BE REPLACED BY FORD. *TR
THE PCM MODULE ON THE FORD ESCAPE DIES DURING OPERATION. WHILE DRIVING IN MID TRANSIT THE CAR DIED, AND WOULD NOT RESTART IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. I HAVE HEARD OTHER STORIES OF PEOPLE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, AND HAVING THIS PROBLEM HAPPEN TO THEM GOING 60,70, AND EVEN 80 MPH. MINE WAS ONLY GOING ABOUT 30, AND NO CARS WERE BEHIND ME. THE MODULE HAS BEEN REPLACED TWICE, AND COULD BE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS IF DIED ON A BUSY HIGHWAY OR INTERSTATE. *TT
ON SEVERAL AT LEAST 12 OCCASIONS, WHILE DRIVING BETWEEN 30-65 MPH THE CAR (2005 FORD ESCAPE) STUBBLES AND THE THEFT LIGHT APPEARS. IN ONE CASE WE WERE ABOUT TO PASS A VEHICLE ON A TWO LANE HIGHWAY AND HAD TO BRAKE AND SWERVE SUDDENLY TO AVOID A HEAD-ON COLLISION. VEHICLE HAS BEEN TAKEN TO FORD SEVERAL TIMES AND NO CODES WERE FOUND AND THEY HAVE STILL NOT ADDRESSED THE PROBLEM. I DID SOME RESEARCH WHICH APPEARS THAT THE PCM IS LIKELY DAMAGED DUE TO A RF ISSUE WITH THE INCORRECT SPARK PLUGS BEING INSTALLED ON THE EARLY MANUFACTURED 2005 FORD ESCAPES. UNFORTUNATELY FORD WILL NOT DOING ANYTHING UNTIL THE COMPUTER ACTUALLY IS DESTROYED, WHICH ALSO FRIES THE COILS (APPROX. $3,000). DEALERSHIPS WILL NOT DO ANYTHING FOR US AND THE CORPORATE OFFICE TOLD US THE SAME. WE NOW HAVE A LOW MILEAGE VEHICLE THAT CANNOT BE TRUSTED SAFELY THAT CANNOT BE FIXED WITHOUT SPENDING $3,000+ FOR A PROBLEM THAT FORD HAS KNOWN ABOUT FOR SEVERAL YEARS. *TR
AS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, THE ENGINE SUDDENLY SHUT DOWN, AND WAS ABLE TO DRIVE TOWARDS THE SHOULDER. AFTER 5 MINUTES, I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE ENGINE. TEN MINUTES LATER, IT HAPPENED AGAIN, STILL DRIVING THE HIGHWAY @60 MPH. LUCKILY, NO CARS WERE BEHIND, AND I WAS ABLE TO MOVE TO THE SHOULDER WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE FOLLOWING MONDAY, IT HAPPENED AGAIN, THREE TIMES . CAR WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER, I WAS TOLD THEY HAVE HAD ANOTHER CAR THE SAME MORNING, WITH EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM. DIAGNOSTICS: NEED TO REPLACE BOTH HIGH VOLTAGE TRACTION BATTERY COOLING FANS AND TO REPLACE MOTOR ELECTRONICS COOLING PUMP. WHEN DEALER SEARCHED FOR PARTS, THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY IN MN, BECAUSE APPARENTLY ALL DEALERS WERE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. IT WOULD TAKE SEVERAL DAYS UNTIL THEY WOULD GET THE PART FROM CA. FORD IS NOT WILLING TO RECOGNIZE THEY HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE ENGINE AND BATTERY COOLING SYSTEM, ALTHOUGH IT HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES. FORD EVEN ISSUED TWO TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS (TSB 08-24-5 AND TSB 09-17-7) ADDRESSING BOTH ISSUES. IT IS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE, GIVEN THE ENGINE SUDDENLY SHUTS DOWN ON THE HIGHWAY, AND THE CAR NEEDS TO BE MOVED RIGHT AWAY TOWARDS THE SHOULDER. CAR COULD BE HIT FROM BEHIND FROM ONCOMING TRAFFIC, GIVEN THE SUDDEN SPEED CHANGE, AND COULD CAUSE FATALITIES. DON'T WANT TO HAVE FOR ANOTHER FIRESTONE - FORD EXPLORER FIASCO.
