2002 FORD ESCAPE. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO ABS RECALL NOTICE. *SMD THE CONSUMER TOOK HIS DAUGHTERS VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, AFTER RECEIVING A RECALL NOTICE IN THE MAIL. THE CONSUMER INFORMED THE SERVICE ADVISOR, THE ABS LIGHT HAD BEEN COMING ON AND GOING OFF FOR A WHILE. UPON THE RETURN OF THE VEHICLE, THE ABS LIGHT WAS ON CONTINUOUSLY. THE CONSUMER RETURNED TO THE SERVICE DESK AND REPORTED THE ISSUE AND HE WAS INFORMED HE COULD LEAVE THE VEHICLE FOR DIAGNOSIS, BUT THERE WOULD BE A FEE OF $ 130.00. THE CONSUMER REFUSED AND THEN TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP. THE LOCAL REPAIR SHOP INFORMED THE CONSUMER, THE PROBLEM THEY WERE ENCOUNTERING WAS AN ABS CODE B1676 WHICH WAS A RESULT OF NO ELECTRICAL POWER TO THE ABS MODULE. THE REPAIR SHOP STATED, BECAUSE THE LIGHT WOULD NO LONGER GO OUT, THAT THE CURRENT SITUATION WAS CAUSED BY PERFORMING THE WORK ON THE RECALL. THEY ALSO EXPLAINED, THAT THE RECALL THAT WAS PERFORMED WAS TO ADD POWER TO THE JUNCTION BLOCK TO SUPPLY ELECTRICITY TO THE ABS MODULE IN SUCH A WAY THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT CATCH FIRE, AND THAT POWER WAS NOT BEING SUPPLIED TO TWO OF THE WIRES AT ALL. THE REPAIR SHOP DISCOVERED THERE WERE TWO INCORRECT SPLICES PERFORMED AT THE DEALER. APPARENTLY, THERE WERE TWO SPLICES THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN MADE AND THE MECHANIC ONLY PUT A HEAT-SHRINK TAPE ON THE CONNECTION AND DID NOT ELECTRICALLY CONNECT THE WIRES. AFTER THE REPAIR OF THE TWO SPLICES, THE SHOP FOUND THAT ONE OF THE TWO WIRES SUPPLYING POWER TO THE ABS MODULE STILL ONLY HAD THREE VOLTS AT ONE OF THE CONNECTORS. THE SHOP FOUND ADDITIONAL RECALLS AS WELL. AFTER INSPECTING THE HARNESS PER THE RECALL NOTICE, HE FOUND THE INSULATION ON SOME OF THE WIRES DAMAGED AND ONE OF THE WIRES WAS CORRODED INTERNALLY CAUSING THE LOW VOLTAGE PROBLEM. HE ALSO NOTED THAT THE INSPECTION COVER ON THE CONNECTOR HAD BEEN REMOVED FOR INSPECTION AND THE MASTER CYLINDER CAP LOOKED NEWER AND NOT THE ORIGINAL. ADDITIONALLY, WHEN HE REMOVED THE CONNECTOR FROM THE ABS UNIT, THERE WAS NO GREASE APPLIED IN THE CAVITY LIKE THE RECALL INSTRUCTED.
WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM WORK IN HEAVY TRAFFIC, THE DRIVERS SIDE AIR BAG DEPLOYED, STRIKING ME IN THE FACE, BREAKING MY EYE GLASSES AND COMPLETELY OBSTRUCTING MY VISION WITH THE INFLATED AIR BAG. I SLOWED SOME BY GAUGING MY SPEED BY THE CARS NEXT TO ME (4 LANES OF TRAFFIC, 2 EACH DIRECTION). I KEPT PUSHING ON THE AIR BAG WITH ONE HAND, TRYING TO DEFLATE IT QUICKER, SO THAT I WOULD BE ABLE TO SEE IN FRONT OF ME. WHEN I FINALLY GOT THE AIR BAG DEFLATED ENOUGH TO SEE OUT THE WINDSHIELD, I WAS ABLE TO GET OVER INTO THE RIGHT HAND LANE AND PULL ASIDE. I REMOVED THE FUSE TO THE HORN AS IT WAS SHORTED OUT WHEN THE AIR BAG DEPLOYED AND CONTINUED ON TO MY HOME. I CONTACTED FORD MOTOR CO. AND THEY ISSUED A LETTER REQUESTING A DEALER TO REMOVE THE RCM AND SEND IT TO THEM. I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO GET A DEALER TO DO THIS. FORD NOW WANTS TO DO NO MORE. I HAVE RESEARCHED ON THE INTERNET AND DISCOVERED THAT THERE A LOT A PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD THE SAME THING HAPPEN TO THEM WITH THIS MODEL. I REMAINED CALM WHEN MINE WENT OFF AND AVOIDED AN ACCIDENT. IF THIS WERE TO HAPPEN TO SOMEONE WHO STARTLES EASY, THIS COULD RESULT IN A FATALITY. *TR
WAS DRIVING IN TOWN WITH PASSENGERS PROPERLY BUCKLED IN SEAT BELTS IN OUR 2007 FORD ESCAPE WITH 67,000 MILES. SUDDEN STOP AND THE PASSENGER IN THE REAR PASSENGERS SEAT HAD THE SEAT BELT PULL LOOSE FROM THE CONNECTOR. INSPECTION SHOWED THAT THE SEAT BELT STITCHING ON THAT PARTICULAR SEAT BELT HAD APPARENTLY NEVER BEEN PROPERLY STITCHED AND THERE WERE ONLY A FEW THREADS HOLDING THE SEAT BELT TOGETHER. CLOSE INSPECTION OF THE OTHER SEAT BELTS IN THE CAR SHOWED THE REST HAD A WHITE INSPECTION TAG WHILE THIS SEAT BELT DID NOT HAVE ONE AT THE "SUPPOSED" SEWED JOINT. LOOKS LIKE THE SEWING MACHINE NEEDLE DRILLED THE HOLES BUT DID NOT PUT THREADS THROUGH THE TWO PIECES. WE ARE NOT THE ORIGINAL OWNERS BUT CLOSE INSPECTION APPEARS TO BE AN ORIGINAL DEFECT AND THE SEAT BELT WAS APPARENTLY NEVER PROPERLY SEWN TO THE CLIP. CONTACTED (THROUGH CHAMPION FORD IN CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS OUR HOME) A LADY NAMED LISETTE WHO APPARENTLY IS THE TEXAS FORD CUSTOMER REPRESENTATIVE AND SHE STATED THAT SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND WE WERE NOT THE ORIGINAL OWNER THAT IT WAS NOT FORD'S RESPONSIBILITY TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT THIS SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM. NO APPARENT RECALLS ON SIMILAR PROBLEMS AND NO ONE BUT FORD APPARENTLY KNOWS HOW MANY "REPLACEMENT" SEAT BELT ASSEMBLIES HAVE BEEN PURCHASED BY FORD ESCAPE OWNERS. WHILE TRAVELING ON A HIGHWAY, THE SPEED CONTROL MECHANISM CEASED TO FUNCTION. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, THE VEHICLE STARTED MAKING A LOUD CLUNKING NOISE. THE CONTACT MERGED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD IN ORDER TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED THAT FLUID WAS LEAKING OUT OF THE TRANSFER CASE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE TRANSFER CASE WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 75,000.
SEVERAL TIMES, OVER A PERIOD OF 2 YEARS, AT LOW SPEEDS (APPROX. 30 MPH) ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT COME ON WITH ALARM SOUNDS. ABLE TO STOP,BUT BRAKES NOT RESPONDING CORRECTLY, TURNED OFF IGNITION, RESTARTED, EVERYTHING OK. THEN ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT COME ON AND WON'T GO OFF, HAVE BRAKES BUT THEY DON'T RESPOND CORRECTLY, MAKING THE CAR VERY UNSAFE TO DRIVE. GO FOR DIAGNOSIS; AFTERWARD NO BRAKES AND HYBRID ASSIST MESSAGE APPEARS. CAR IS NO LONGER OPERABLE. ALL BRAKE INCIDENTS OCCURRED ON CITY STREETS OR IN DRIVEWAY ON STARTING. DIAGNOSIS: MASTER CYLINDER NEEDS REPLACING AND PROBABLY HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT AS WELL. TOTAL COST FOR PARTS BEFORE LABOR $6,000,APPROXIMATELY THE SAME AS THE VALUE OF THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE OF THESE PARTS IS APPARENTLY A COMMON AND WELL KNOWN PROBLEM THAT FORD REFUSES TO ADDRESS.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 5 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE FAILURE WAS RECURRING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS WHERE IT WAS STATED THAT THE COOLING PACK NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 97,000.
WHILE DRIVING ALONG A CURVE IN THE ROAD WITH NO ROAD HAZARDS APPARENT, THE DRIVER SIDE FRONT AXLE CRACKED, CAUSING WARNINGS TO LIGHT UP ON THE INSTRUMENT DISPLAY. THE AXLE WAS REPLACED IMMEDIATELY. *TR
TRAVELING ON HIGHWAY. INDICATOR COMES ON AND SAYS "STOP SAFELY NOW". THEN THE ENGINE CUTS OUT. YOU THEN HAVE TO HOPE YOU CAN GET TO THE SHOULDER. ONCE YOU TURN THE KEY OFF, YOU CAN START UP THE ENGINE. THIS HAPPENED 6 TIMES. HOW CAN A CAR COMPANY PROGRAM THIS KIND OF UNSAFE PROCEDURE INTO A CAR. *TR
WHILE BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE, THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL SEPARATED FROM THE VEHICLE. UPON CLOSER INSPECTION, IT APPEARED THAT THE BOLT SHEARED, DISLOCATING THE WHEEL FROM THE DRIVETRAIN. THIS WAS LATER CONFIRMED AT THE REPAIR CENTER--THE BOLT HAD SHEARED AND HAD TO BE DRILLED OUT. THE FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM BOLTS (FORWARD BOLT) REMOVED AND THREADS HAD TO BE REPAIRED. THE RIGHT FRONT AXLE ALSO HAD TO BE REPLACED. THIS VEHICLE IS ONLY 6.5 YEARS OLD, AND IS NOT DRIVEN OFF ROAD. FORD DOES NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THIS AS AN ISSUE. AS NOTED ELSEWHERE ON THIS SITE, WE ALSO HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH BRAKE SQUEALING, AS WELL AS THE WATER PUMP ISSUE. *TR
ON JUNE 24,2013 I WAS COMING BACK FROM ARIZONA TRAVELING ON THE TWO LANE FREEWAY AT 70 MILES AN HOUR WITH THE AIR CONDITIONING RUNNING. WITH NO WARNING WHAT SO EVER THE ENGINE JUST QUIT AND FORTUNATELY, I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. HAD I BEEN ON A FOUR LANE FREEWAY IN THE FAST LANE AT TRAFFIC TIME IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A DIFFERENT STORY. I AM VERY CONCERNED THIS COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A REAR END COLLISION. AFTER SITTING ON THE SHOULDER FOR 10 MINUTES THE ENGINE STARTED AND I CONTINUED MY TRIP WITHOUT ANY ADDITIONAL PROBLEMS. I DIDN'T DRIVE THE CAR AGAIN AFTER I GOT HOME UNTIL I TOOK IT TO HUNTINGTON BEACH FORD FOR INSPECTION. THE DEALER FOUND THE ELECTRIC WATER PUMP WAS FAULTY AND FAILED THEIR TEST. THE WATER PUMP WAS REPAIRED, THE SYSTEM FLUSHED AND IT TESTED OK. A TEST DRIVE WAS ALSO PERFORMED BY THE DEALER WITH PASSING RESULTS. THE COST OF THIS WORK WAS $829.99 DOLLARS. I AM WRITING TO YOU OUT OF CONCERN FOR OUR FAMILY AND OTHERS THAT OWN THIS VEHICLE SINCE WE NO LONGER CAN TRUST WE WON'T HAVE ANOTHER NO WARNING ENGINE SHUT DOWN SOME PLACE WE WON'T BE ABLE TO GET TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. AS I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD, THE ABS AND 4X4 LIGHTS STARTED GOING OFF, WITH THE ABS ENGAGING ERRATICALLY WITH NO APPARENT REASON DUE TO CLIMATE OR TERRAIN. I CALLED FORD DEALER AND THEY SAID EITHER THE AXLE OR THE BRAKE HUB WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED, AT THE EXPENSES OF HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS JUST FOR THE PART, AND LIKELY HUNDREDS MORE FOR LABOR! I THEN GO ONLINE, HOWEVER, A SEE A LITANY OF COMPLAINTS FOR THE FORD ESCAPE HYBRID AND MERCURY MARINER SPANNING OVER THE COURSE OF A DECADE - ALL WITH THE EXACT SAME DESCRIPTION OF WHAT I EXPERIENCED. ALL THE TESTIMONIALS POINTED TOWARDS A THE FAULTY DESIGN OF THE TONE RING THAT IS USED BY THE ABS TO GAGE DRIVING CONDITIONS. APPARENTLY, AFTER A FEW YEARS OF DRIVING, IT TENDS TO SNAP! THIS 5$ - $15 DOLLAR PART IS THEN USED FOR AND AN EXCUSES FOR A REPAIR THAT MAY SPILL OVER INTO THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS, WHILE NOT TO MENTION, ENDANGERING THE DRIVER AND PASSENGERS OF SAID VEHICLES. WHEN I ASKED THE DEALER IF THEY'D REPLACE ONLY THE TONE RING, THEY SAID THEY DO NOT STOCK THE TONE RING ONLY, BUT THEY DO STOCK THE BRAKE HUB AND AXLE. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A DANGEROUS MANUFACTURING FLAW, ONE THAT COULD PUT THE SAFETY OF THE DRIVER AT RISK. I WOULD HOPE THE DOT WOULD STRONGLY ENCOURAGE FORD TO CORRECT THIS CALAMITY BY REPLACING THE POORLY DESIGNED TONE RING WITH SOMETHING DURABLE, TO BETTER REFLECT THE QUALITY OF PRODUCT WE'D LIKE TO EXPECT FROM FORD, NOT TO MENTION A GENERAL SENSE OF CONCERN FOR OUR WELLBEING. *TR
MANY OF THE CASES INCLUDE THE ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES OF FORD AND THEIR NEGLECT TO HANDLE ANY OF THE ISSUES. ONE OF THE CASES INCLUDED A TEENAGE GIRL HAVING THE SAME VEHICLE AS MYSELF. HER PARENTS HAD REPORTED THE ISSUES TO FORD AND THEY NEVER FIXED THE PROBLEM(S) TO MAKE THIS ONE STORY OF MANY SHORT...THE GIRLS CAR BROKE DOWN WHILE SHE WAS DRIVING HOME AND FROM THE CASE HER PHONE DID NOT HAVE RECEPTION. A MAN WAS DRIVING BY AND SHE HAILED HIM TO PULL OVER AND HE ENDED UP RAPING THE GIRL AND MURDERING HER. THE FAMILY WAS BLAMED AND FORD WAS NOT PROPERLY CHARGED. THERE WERE OTHER CASES I STUDIED THAT INVOLVED FORD THAT INCLUDE MOSTLY THE TRANSMISSIONS LIGHTING ON FIRE AND KILLING THE INDIVIDUALS. THIS IS BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT THAT FORD NEEDS TO BE FACE JUDGMENT UNDER THE SUPREME COURT FOR THIS GROSS NEGLIGENCE. THEY HAVE LET SEVERAL INNOCENT PEOPLE DIE WHILE THEY ARE POCKETING MILLIONS OF DOLLARS. EVERY TIME I HAVE CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP OR GONE TO THEM IN PERSON THEY TRY TO RAISE PRICES ON SIMPLISTIC PARTS THAT YOU CAN BUY CHEAPER ONLINE OR AT WALMART. THEY CHARGE FEES FOR EVERY SINGLE THING; EVEN IF YOUR FULLY COVERED WITH INSURANCE IT STILL IS NOT MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE. THEY HAVE HIDDEN IMPORTING PARTS FROM THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES AND IT IS ABOUT TIME THAT THEY ARE EXPOSED FOR ALL THEIR MISCONDUCT; AS I DO NOT FIND IT IN ANY WAY FOR ANYONE NOR A COMPANY TO LET INNOCENT PEOPLE BE MURDERED. IT IS A FELONY UNDER THE LAW OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. THE COURT CASES DATE BACK DECADES, IF THEIR WORKERS COULD NOT FIX THE "ISSUES" YEARS AGO AND THEY EVEN HAD ISSUES THE LAST YEAR WITH SEVERAL TEENAGERS GOING TO THEIR PROM THAT RESULTED IN DEATH AS WELL THEN I WOULD STATE BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT FORD COMPANY SHOULD GO OUT OF BUSINESS AND MAKE SURE THEY PAY EVERY PENNY BACK TO ALL THE VICTIMS INCLUDING MYSELF AND OTHERS THAT PURCHASED THEIR TOY CARS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2007 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED A LOSS OF POWER WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BACK TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO THE REPLACEMENT TRANSMISSION. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. A FEW DAYS AFTER THE REPAIR, WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH, THE CONTACT AND DRIVER HEARD AN ABNORMAL NOISE AND ODOR. SMOKE AND FLAMES WERE VISIBLE BEHIND THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO BE PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND EVACUATED. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A SALVAGE YARD WHERE IT WAS DEEMED DESTROYED. THERE WERE TWO INJURIES, ONE THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE DRIVER SUFFERED FROM SMOKE INHALATION AND NERVE DAMAGE. THE PASSENGER SUFFERED FROM RIB PAIN AND SMOKE INHALATION. THE VIN WAS INVALID. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 129,000.
AFTER DRIVING APPROX 20 MIN ON THE FREEWAY, MY 2007 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID SHUT OFF. WARNING LIGHT CAME ON DISPLAYING: MOTOR TEMP HIGH. THEN, STOP SAFELY. CONSIDERING I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FREEWAY IN PHOENIX AZ, THE 2ND WARNING STATEMENT WAS QUITE UN-NERVING. WHEN I FINALLY MADE IT TO THE SHOULDER OF THE FREEWAY, I OPENED THE HOOD, NOTHING WAS OVERHEATING, NO STEAM, COOLANT LEVELS NORMAL. THE VEHICLE STARTED AGAIN WITHOUT ISSUE. I PROCEEDED APPROX 5 MINUTES DOWN THE FREEWAY AND EXITED. WHEN ATTEMPTING TO CROSS THE STREET AT THE END OF THE EXIT RAMP, THE VEHICLE SHUT DOWN AGAIN, DISPLAYING THE SAME MESSAGES. THIS INCIDENT LEFT ME IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY ROAD. WHEN I FINALLY ARRIVED HOME, I CONTACTED A FRIEND WHO IS MORE KNOWLEDGEABLE THAN I REGARDING MECHANICAL ISSUES. HE SAID HE HAD HEARD OF THIS AND SUGGESTED I LOOK ON THE INTERNET. I AM APPALLED AT THE # OF OCCURRENCES OF THE SAME ISSUE THAT HAVE BEEN REPORTED. YET NO ONE, NOT THE MANUFACTURER OR THE DEALERSHIPS HAVE NOTIFIED THE CONSUMER OF THIS VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. MY FATHER HAS PURCHASED FORDS FOR YEARS. THIS IRRESPONSIBLE ACTION, OF FAILURE TO NOTIFY THE CONSUMER OF POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS MALFUNCTIONS, DOES NOT FIT THE RESPONSIBLE COMPANY THAT HE HAS ALWAYS DESCRIBED. *TR
I HAD THE CRUISE CONTROL SET AND WAS DRIVING AT BETWEEN 55 AND 60 ON THE METER. I WAS IN AN AREA WHERE THE ROAD DIPS AND RISES. COMING UP A RISE IT ACCELERATED BUT THEN CONTINUED BEYOND THE SET SPEED. APPLYING THE BRAKES DID RESULT IN REGAINING CONTROL OF THE SPEED. THIS WAS NOT THE FIRST OCCURRENCE, AND IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THIS HAPPENS AFTER HAVING GONE UP A HILL. I CHECKED TO SEE IF THERE WERE RECALLS ISSUED FOR MY CAR AND IT APPEARS THAT THERE IS NOT ONE FOR THE 2007 MODEL, BUT RESEARCH HAS REVEALED SEVERAL SIMILAR COMPLAINTS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 FORD ESCORT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HIS VEHICLE WOULD LOSE POWER WHEN DRIVING 70 MPH. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INSPECTED OR REPAIRED. HAVING TO POTENTIALLY CUT ACROSS 4 LANES OF FREEWAY TRAFFIC WITHOUT POWER IS VERY DANGEROUS. I NEARLY HAD AN ACCIDENT SEVERAL TIMES DUE TO THIS. IF THE HYBRID SYSTEM HAS A FAULT, IT SHOULD STILL KEEP THE GAS ENGINE OPERATIONAL. ADDITIONALLY, THE FAULT IS VERY INTERMITTENT, AND MY FORD FACTORY MECHANIC COULD NOT TRACK DOWN ANY DEFINITE CAUSE. *TR
I WAS DRIVING AT FREEWAY SPEED AND THE CAR SUDDENLY GAVE THE SIGNAL "STOP CAR SAFELY NOW." BOTH TIMES THE PROBLEM OCCURRED AFTER SUSTAINED (2 HRS) FREEWAY SPEED (70 MPH) DRIVING. THIS TIME I WAS TOWED TO A FORD DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY IDENTIFIED THAT THE HYBRID BATTERY SYSTEM HAD OVERHEATED AND NUMEROUS PARTS NEEDED REPLACEMENT. *TR

WE TOOK OUR 2007 FORD ESCAPE (APROX 60,000 MILES) ON A ROAD TRIP FROM OMAHA NE TO ST. LOUIS MO ON 3/10/13 AND ARRIVED WITH NO ISSUES. ON OUR RETURN TRIP WE DROVE ABOUT 100 MILES UNTIL THE CAR STOPPED ON THE INTERSTATE. THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN AND ALL OF THE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AT THE SAME TIME. WE WERE ABLE TO COAST TO THE SHOULDER SAFELY BUT WERE UNABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE. WE HAD AAA TOW THE VEHICLE ABOUT 30 MILES TO THE CLOSEST TOWN AND AAA APPROVED MECHANIC. WHEN THE MECHANIC LOOKED AT THE VEHICLE THEY DETERMINED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD BURNED THROUGH ALL OF THE OIL AND WAS COMPLETELY EMPTY CAUSING THE ENGINE TO SEIZE UP. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS INDICATING LOW OIL UP UNTIL THIS POINT. I HAD RECENTLY HAD MY OIL CHANGED ABOUT 8 WEEK AND LESS THAN 1000 MILES PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT AND THERE WERE NO LEAKS SO IT SEEMS VERY IMPROBABLY THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD HAVE USED 4 QTS OF OIL IN THAT TIME. I CONTACTED FORD AND THE VEHICLE IS JUST OUT OF THE WARRANTY PERIOD AND THEY ARE UNWILLING TO ASSIST. IN MY RESEARCH IT APPEARS THAT THIS MAY BE A COMMON OCCURRENCE ON THIS VEHICLE AT ABOUT 60-70K MILES AND MAY WARRANT ADDITIONAL RESEARCH. THE VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A BROKEN TONE RING ALONG WITH MARGINAL BRAKE PADS. REPORTEDLY THE ABS AND 4WD SENSORS ARE INTERCONNECTED. REPORTEDLY, THE FRONT ROTORS HAD TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THEY WERE TOO PITTED TO BE TURNED. QUESTIONED THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT ABOUT SERVICE BULLETINS OR RECALLS, NONE WERE LIST ON THE ESCAPE CONCERNING THIS ISSUE. ACCORDING TO ONE OF THE SERVICE MANAGERS, THE PROBLEM WITH THE TONE RING IS NOT A COMMON ISSUE. WHILE WAITING ON HE REPAIRS, I CHECKED THE INTERNET AND FOUND THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH REPEAT FAILURES OF THE PART. I PRESENTED THIS INFO TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT WITHOUT ANY RELIEF OR RECOURSE OTHER THAT I WOULD PROBABLY HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE THIS DONE AGAIN. WHILE DRIVING IN THE SECOND FROM THE RIGHT LANE, IN HEAVY TRAFFIC JUST AFTER DARK, THE ENGINE COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN, WITH NO WARNING. MY INFORMATION SCREEN SAID "HYBRID SYSTEM FAILURE, PULL OVER IMMEDIATELY." I HAD NO POWER OF ANY KIND, HAD TO NAVIGATE HEAVY TRAFFIC AT HIGH SPEEDS, AND PULL OVER TO THE SHOULDER. IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT AND VERY DANGEROUS TO NAVIGATE. I AGAIN WAITED, AND ONCE AGAIN THE ENGINE STARTED. I PULLED OFF AT THE ELKTON EXIT, AND SPENT THE NIGHT AT A LOCAL HOTEL. THE NEXT MORNING, I CALLED THE LOCAL FORD DEALER, AND WAS TOLD THAT, SINCE I WAS NOT A REGULAR CUSTOMER, THEY COULD NOT HELP ME FOR TWO DAYS. AFTER TOWING THE CAR TO MY HOME DEALER, ABOUT 75 MILES, I WAS INFORMED THAT IT WAS A WATER PUMP FAILURE, NOT A HYBRID SYSTEM FAILURE, AND THEREFORE NOT COVERED BY THE WARRANTY. THIS SEEMED CURIOUS TO ME AS THERE WAS NO INDICATION THAT THE ENGINE WAS OVERHEATING, AND THE CAR ITSELF INDICATED THAT THERE WAS A HYBRID SYSTEM FAILURE. WHY WOULD THEY DESIGN A VEHICLE TO COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN, WITH NO WARNING. I CAN NOT IMAGINE THE PANIC THIS MAY HAVE CAUSED WITH A LESS EXPERIENCED DRIVER. THIS HAD DISASTER WRITTEN ALL OVER IT. THE SYSTEM SHOULD BE DESIGNED TO WARN THE DRIVER THAT A PROBLEM IS IMMINENT, AND THE ENGINE WILL SHUT OFF IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. AS DESIGNED, THIS IS A TERRIBLE AND DANGEROUS WARNING SYSTEM, AND THE WARRANTY SERVICE FROM FORD IS VAGUE AND AWFUL. *TR
WITHIN 3 MINUTES OF STARTING VEHICLE, "STOP VEHICLE SAFELY" MESSAGE WAS DISPLAYED ALONG WITH A RED WARNING TRIANGLE. VEHICLE SHUT DOWN WITHIN A FEW SECONDS. TRUCK WAS PUT ON A TRAILER AND BROUGHT TO A FORD DEALERSHIP. THREE CODES WERE PRESENT, ONE BEING P0A27. FORD'S "FIX" IS TO INSTALL A SERVICE HARNESS AND FLASH THE BCM. ( SEE FORD'S CSP 07B48 AND LATER TSB 09-18-6) ALTHOUGH THERE WAS NEVER A RECALL, "SOME 2007-2007 ESCAPE HYBRID VEHICLES BUILT FROM 10-13-2003 TO 12-19-2006" MAY EXPERIENCE THIS PROBLEM. ACCORDING TO FORD, THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT ONE OF THE AFFECTED ONES, YET IT HAS THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE SAME RESOLUTION ACCORDING TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP. A VEHICLE THAT HAS A HARDWARE/ PROGRAMMING GLITCH THAT CAN CAUSE IT TO SHUT DOWN COMPLETELY AT ANY SPEED IS A DEFECT AND SHOULD BE RECALLED AND REPAIRED BY THE MANUFACTURER. *TR
JUST BOUGHT THE CAR...I WAS DRIVING FROM L.A. TO PALM SPRINGS ...AFTER ABOUT AN HOUR ON THE ROAD THE CAR JUST STALLED WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY....I PULLED OVER AND STARTED THE CAR AGAIN IT WAS FINE FOR 10 MIN THEN DID IT AGAIN. STARTED AGAIN AND DROVE THE REST OF THE WAY AT 40- 50 MILES AN HOUR WITH HAZARDS ON. PROBLEM SEEMED TO STOP AS LONG AS I DROVE AT THIS SPEED AND WAS NOT ON AN INCLINE OF ANY TYPE. CAR PULLS AT TIMES BUT MOSTLY DRIVES FINE IF I'M NOT ON THE FREEWAY AND IF I DON'T DRIVE OVER AN HOUR AT 60MPH. OTHERWISE IT STALLS OUT AT UNEXPECTED MOMENTS ON FREEWAYS. A VERY UNRELIABLE VEHICLE AND VERY DANGEROUS! *TR
PULLED AWAY AFTER A STOP SIGN AND REACH A SPEED OF ABOUT 35 - 40 MILES AN HOUR WHEN THE ENGINE JUST SHUT DOWN. THERE WAS NO WARNING AND I WAS FORTUNATE THAT I WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD SAFELY. AFTER THE ENGINE COOLED DOWN I WAS ABLE TO LIMP HOME. THE NEXT DAY I TOOK IT INTO THE LOCAL FORD DEALER AND WAS TOLD THE MECS COOLING PUMP AND FANS HAD FAILED. I CANNOT IMAGE WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF I HAD BEEN ON A FREEWAY WHEN THIS HAPPENED. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS DEFECT WITH THE FORD HYBRID MODEL. TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE, FORD SAYS I AM 400 MILES PAST MY WARRANTY COVERAGE AND IT WOULD COST ME OVER $1,200 TO FIX. *JS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID. THE CONTACT WAS TRAVELING 40-45 MPH WHEN THE ENGINE STALLED. THE PULL OVER SAFELY WARNING MESSAGE DISPLAYED AFTER THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER CONFIRMED THAT THE MOTOR ELECTRONIC COOLING SYSTEM AND WATER PUMP BOTH FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 100,400.
THE ABS TONE RING ON THE DRIVERS SIDE FRONT CRACKED AND BECAME LOOSE MAKING THE LIGHTS ON THE DASH FLASH RED FOR THE 4WD AND ABS SYSTEM. THIS RING IS WHAT THE ABS WHEEL SPEED SENSOR PICKS ITS SIGNAL UP FROM TO ALLOW THE ABS COMPUTER TO DETERMINE IF THE WHEEL IS HAVING A TRACTION ISSUE. THIS IS CAUSING THE ABS AND TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM TO GO CRAZY. I'M BEING TOLD THAT CORROSION FORMS UNDERNEATH THE RING BUILDING TENSION UNTIL IT JUST CRACKS AND POPS ITSELF FREE. FORD HAS QUOTED ME A PRICE OF $300 PER RING REPLACEMENT. MY CAR HAS BEEN WELL MAINTAINED. IT'S A SHAME THAT THIS PROBLEM IS NOT BEING RECALLED BY FORD WITH A PERMANENT SOLUTION. WAS DRIVING ON FREEWAY AT 75 MPH WITH CRUISE CONTROL ON FOR APPROXIMATELY 5 TO 10 MINUTES AND ENGINE QUIT. A RED TRIANGLE WITH EXCLAMATION MARK SYMBOL ILLUMINATED ON DASH AND THE MESSAGE CENTER DISPLAYED "STOP VEHICLE SAFELY NOW". THE VEHICLE DECELERATED WITHOUT ENGINE POWER AND ONLY THE ELECTRIC MOTOR WAS WORKING TO DRIVE THE CAR TO THE SHOULDER OF THE FREEWAY. I DID A SYSTEM CHECK AND ALL RESULTS WERE NORMAL. I SHUT THE VEHICAL OF AND RESTARTED IT AND DID ANOTHER SYSTEM CHECK WHICH GAVE ALL NORMAL RESULTS AGAIN. I CONTINUED MY TRIP AND THE PROBLEM HAS NOT HAPPENED AGAIN. *TT
I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY WHEN THE ENGINE SHUT OFF AND 'MASTER VEHICLE ELECTRICAL HAZRARD WARNING LAMP' CAME ON. FORTUNATELY I ONLY HAD TO CROSS ONE LANE IN MODEST TRAFFIC. THE OWNER'S MANUAL INSTRUCTIONS STATE 'STOP THE VEHICLE, SHIFT TO PARK, TURN THE KEY TO OFF POSITION AND ATTEMPT TO RESTART THE VEHICLE. IF THE FAULT REMAINS, THE VEHICLE MAY REQUIRE RESETTING THE SHUT-OFF SWITCHES.' FOLLOWING THE INSTRUCTIONS, I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AND CONTINUE DRIVING WITHOUT RESETTING ANY SWITCHES. THE WARNING LIGHT REMAINED OFF AND HAS NOT COME BACK ON AGAIN. I HAVE SHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A DEALER. IN THE MEAN TIME I HAVE SEARCHED THE WEB FOR DRIVERS WITH SIMILIAR EXPERIENCES AND HAVE COME ACROSS QUITE A FEW. I PERSONALLY DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING A VEHICLE THAT CAN SHUT OFF WITHOUT WARNING, ESPECIALLY ON A BUSY HIGHWAY. THE FACT THAT FORD HAS INSTRUCTIONS IN THE OWNERS MANUAL FOR 'RESETTING THE FUEL PUMP/HIGH VOLTAGE SHUT OFF SWITCHES' IS ALARMING IN ITSELF ESSENTIALLY I CAN BE TRAVELING IN URBAN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC AND A COMPUTER CAN DECIDE TO SHUT OFF THE ENGINE. I URGE YOU TO REQUIRE FORD TO ADDRESS THIS DEFECT. *TT
OVER THE PAST SEVERAL MONTHS, MY GAS PEDAL HAS BEEN STICKING WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE. IT BEGAN IN MAY 2012 AND HAS BEEN GETTING PROGRESSIVELY WORSE. I THOUGHT IT MIGHT HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH COLD WEATHER, BUT IT HAS OCCURRED AT VARIOUS TIMES OF THE DAY AS WELL AS TEMPERATURES AT THROUGHOUT SPRING, SUMMER AND FALL. I AM FORCED TO PUSH HARD ON THE ACCELERATOR WHEN IT STICKS, WHICH CAUSES MY VEHICLE TO LUNGE FORWARD. IT USUALLY STICKS WHEN I HAVE COMPLETELY STOPPED, BUT HAS OFTEN GOTTEN STUCK WHEN ACCELERATING AFTER COMING OUT OF A CURVE I HAVE SLOWED DOWN TO GO THROUGH. IT IS A DANGEROUS PROBLEM THAT SEEMS TO HAVE OCCURRED WITH SEVERAL FORD ESCAPES IN THE PAST. *TR
THIS IS THE 4TH INSTANCE FOR THIS SAME PROBLEM. I CAN NOT RECALL THE DATE AND MILEAGE THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED THE FIRST TWO TIMES SO I USED THE LATEST INSTANCE FOR DATE AND MILEAGE. THIS VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY 5 AND 1/2 YEARS OLD AND HAS 81,100 MILES ON IT. FOUR (4) TIMES NOW THE ABS TONE RING HAS CRACKED CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO OCCASIONALLY BRAKE AS IF THE ABS IS WORKING AND INCREASING THE STOPPING DISTANCE REQUIRED TO SAFELY STOP THE VEHICLE. THERE ARE MULTIPLE INTERNET REPORTS REGARDING THIS ISSUE WITH THIS VEHICLE. LAST YEAR (AUG 2011) I HAD TO HAVE ONE OF THE ABS TONE RINGS REPLACED AT APPROX 72,000 MILES. THAT WAS THE 3RD TIME I HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM. CONSIDERING THIS IS MY 4TH OCCURRENCE WITH THIS PROBLEM AND THERE ARE NUMEROUS REPORTS ON THE INTERNET I RESPECTFULLY REQUEST THAT AN INVESTIGATION BE OPENED TO LOOK INTO A RECALL OF THIS PART. SOME INTERNET REPORTS SUGGEST THAT FORD HAS MODIFIED THE ABS TONE RING BUT I DO KNOW IF THAT IS CORRECT. I AM A RETIRED AIR FORCE SAFETY SPECIALIST WITH 15 YEARS EXPERIENCE AND IT IS MY BELIEF THAT THIS DEFECT POSES A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD TO BOTH THE DRIVER AND OTHERS SHOULD THE VEHICLE FAIL TO STOP PROPERLY. I HAVE CONTACTED FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE TO TRY TO HAVE THIS LATEST INSTANCE REPAIRED AT NO COST TO ME. IT IS CURRENTLY UNDER REVIEW. *TR
2007 FORD ESCAPE. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO DISSATISFACTION WITH NEEDED VEHICLE REPAIR *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED WHEN HE PICKED HIS VEHICLE UP FROM THE REPAIR SHOP, HE DISCOVERED THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE BUCKLE ASSEMBLIES WERE NOT FIXED. THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THE PARTS WERE ON BACKORDER. *JB
IN COLD WEATHER FOR THE FIRST 2 OR 3 STOPS THE GAS PEDAL WOULD NOT MASH DOWN. IT STUCK UP. IT WOULD BE OK AFTER THAT. NEVER A PROBLEM IN SUMMER. FORD CHECKED IT AND COULD NOT FIND A PROBLEM. I CONTACTED FORD AND THEY DID NOT HAVE AN ANSWER TO THE PROBLEM. I FELT LIKE I WAS NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM. FINALLY IN APRIL OF THIS YEAR IT STUCK AND I HAD TO HAVE THE THROTTLE REPLACED, A $383.79 COST TO ME. I CONTACTED FORD AND TOLD THEM I THOUGHT THEY SHOULD PAY FOR THE REPAIR SINCE IT WAS A SAFETY ISSUE. THEY EVIDENTIALLY THOUGHT NOT BECAUSE THEY WOULD NOT TAKE CARE OF IT. WHEN YOU STOP AND START OFF AND THE PEDAL STICKS AND YOU ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION AND YOUR CAR WON'T MOVE, THAT IS A SAFETY ISSUE. MY SON WAS DRIVING IN TEXAS AND STOPPED BEHIND ANOTHER CAR AT A RED LIGHT AND STARTED TO EASE UP WHEN THE PEDAL STUCK. HE PATTED IT A TIME OR TWO AND IT JERKED FORWARD AND ALMOST HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF US. THIS HAPPENED THE WHOLE TIME I HAD THE CAR UNTIL APRIL OF THIS YEAR AND AFTER 2 OR 3 STOPS, WHEN IT WARMED UP, IT WAS OK. *TR
