MY ELECTRIC POWER STEERING ASSIST HAS BEEN OUT FOR SOME TIME NOW AND BEEN USING WITHOUT POWER STEERING. MY VEHICLE FITS THE EXACT DESCRIPTION AS THE RECALL FOR THIS ISSUR DEACRIBES AND WAS MANUFACTURED AT THE KC PLANT AS WELL AND IS A 2008 ESCAPE XLT BUT YET I'M LEFT RESPONSIBLE AND WOULD RATHER BLOW THE THING UP THAN FIX AND NEVER DRUVE ANOTHER FORD AGAIN FOR THEM NOT CLAIMING RESPONSIBILITY.
2008 FORD ESCAPE HAD THE RECALL DONE FOR THE POWER STEERING IN SEPTEMBER THEN IN NOVEMBER I HAD EVERYTHING CHECKED BECAUSE MY GAS PEDAL GOT STUCK. THEN I GOT THE READOUT THEY GAVE ME A LIST OF ALL OF THE PROBLEMS THAT WERE WRONG WITH MY VEHICLE WHICH NOTHING APPEARED WHEN THEY DID THE RECALL THE TORQUE SENSOR WAS ONE OF THEM SOMETHING THAT THEY SHOULD HAVE REPLACED BUT TOLD ME SINCE IT DIDN'T READ AT THE TIME THE SOFTWARE WAS THE ONLY THING THAT THEY COULD DO AND I HAD TO PAY FOR IT NOW.NOW IN FEBRUARY THE POWER STEERING WENT BACK IN TO MANUAL THEY WILL NOT FIX IT AT THE DEALERSHIP THEY TELL ME TO CALL FORD. FORD TELLS ME THAT THERE'S NOTHING THAT THEY CAN DO THAT THERE'S AN INDEPENDENT COMPANY THAT HANDLES RECALLS THE DEALERSHIP TELLS ME TO CALL FORD SO FROM SEPTEMBER TILL NOW I PUT ABOUT 5000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE I DON'T THINK I SHOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THIS THE ONLY THING I CAN THINK OF IS TO TAKE THEM TO COURT ALONG WITH FORD MOTOR COMPANY I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THEY CAN FIND SO MANY THINGS WRONG WITH MY VEHICLE NOW WHEN THEY HAD TO DO A DIAGNOSTIC CHECK AND CHECK THE ENTIRE VEHICLE AND DID NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG AT THAT TIME.ALL THEY DID WAS SOFTWARE UPDATE I DROPPED IT OFF AND HAD IT BACK IN ONE HOUR AND TWO MONTHS LATER THEY WANT ME TO PAY FOR ALL THESE THINGS WRONG WITH MY VEHICLE WHEN I DEFINITELY SUSPECT THAT EVERYTHING WAS WRONG WITH IT AT THE TIME THEY JUST DON'T WANT TO PAY FOR ANYTHING AND I DEFINITELY FEEL LIKE THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD GO AFTER THEM. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL INADVERTENTLY TURNED LEFT. THE CONTACT COASTED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND DISCONNECTED THE POWER STEERING FUSE. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE WITH NO POWER STEERING TO HIS RESIDENCE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TORQUE SENSOR FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. WHILE LEAVING THE DEALER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE TECHNICIAN ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE STEERING COLUMN FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V284000 (STEERING). THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 165,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE VEHICLE MADE A LOUD CLINKING NOISE AND THE TRANSMISSION SEIZED. THE CONTACT LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THE SERVICE VEHICLE WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS FAULTY. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 75,000. UPDATED 4/15/15*CN UPDATED 03/09/16.*JB
RECALL 14S05 WAS PERFORMED BUT FAULTY SENSOR SHOWED UP 4 MONTHS AFTERWARDS AND NOW FORD REFUSES TO FIX THE PROBLEM AS THEY CLAIM THE RECALL ADDRESSED THE PROBLEM. *TR
THE POWER STEERING QUIT WORKING. I HAVE SINCE DISCOVERED THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS MAKE AND MODEL. FORD MOTOR COMPANY REFUSES TO HONOR THEIR RECALL #14S05. *TR
2008 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID. CONSUMER THE SAFETY RECALL FOR WHEN ENGINE GOES INTO "IDLE" MODE AND DOES NOT RESPOND TO THROTTLE INPUTS WHEN A FAULT IS DETECTED WITH THE MOTOR ELECTRONICS COOLANT PUMP, WAS NOT BEING FULLY ADDRESS BY FORD. *TA THE CONSUMER STATED THE REAL SAFETY ISSUE WAS THE SOFTWARE THAT TRIGGERED THE ENGINE GOING INTO IMMEDIATE IDLE MODE. FUTURE FAILURES OF THE MOTOR ELECTRONICS COOLANT PUMP WOULD TRIGGER THE ENGINE GOING INTO THE IMMEDIATE IDLE MODE. THE CONSUMER BELIEVED THE APPROPRIATE FIX WOULD BE TO CHANGE THE SOFTWARE FROM GOING TO IMMEDIATE IDLE MODE TO GOING TO IDLE MODE AFTER A DELAY OF A PERIOD OF TIME OR WHEN THE VEHICLE'S SPEED IS ZERO WHICHEVER OCCURS FIRST. OFTEN WHEN STARTING MY CAR, THE ABS LIGHT AND BRAKE LIGHT COMES ON AND A MESSAGE SAYS REGEN BRAKES DISABLED. THE BRAKES ARE WEAK WHEN DRIVING IN THIS STATE. WHEN I TURN THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON, THE ERROR USUALLY GOES AWAY AND THE BRAKES WORK NORMALLY. OCCASIONALLY, THE ERROR OCCURS WHILE DRIVING AND THE BRAKES GET WEAK, AND I PULL OVER AND TURN CAR OFF AND ON TO CLEAR THE ERROR. IT HAS BEEN HAPPENING WITH INCREASING FREQUENCY. THE DEALER HAD NEVER HEARD OF THE PROBLEM AND SAID THE DIAGNOSTIC CODES DID NOT GIVE CLEAR ACTION FOR FIXING IT. THE DEALER REPLACED THE BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS FOR $850 BUT THE ERROR CONTINUED. NOW THEY RECOMMEND REPLACING THE ENTIRE ABS MODULE AND HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT FOR $5200. I HAVE SEEN MANY OTHER COMPLAINTS DESCRIBING THIS DANGEROUS DEFECT. I THINK FORD SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL OR OFFER SOME PAYMENT FOR THIS EXPENSIVE REPAIR. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED BY THE DEALER THAT A POWER STEERING RECALL HAD BEEN COMPLETED TWO YEARS PRIOR TO THE CONTACT OWNING THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL RECENTLY SEIZED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT APPLIED FORCE TO THE STEERING WHEEL, BUT IT VEERED TO THE RIGHT AND DROVE INTO A DITCH. THE CONTACT HAD TO RESTART THE VEHICLE TO CORRECT THE DIRECTION OF THE STEERING WHEEL. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THAT THE POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND WAS AWARE OF THE RECALL REPAIR, ACCORDING TO THE DEALER. THE RECALL INFORMATION WAS NOT PROVIDED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 149,000.
THREE OUT OF FOUR WINDOWS HAVE FAILED DUE TO REGULATERS. WHEN AUTO SHOPS WERE ASKED ABOUT THE PROBLEM, THE REPLY WAS THAT IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM. REPAIRS RANGE FROM TWO HUNDRED TO SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS. IT WOULD SEEM THAT THE FACTORY WOULD ADDRESS A PROBLEM AS COMMON AS THIS.TWO WINDOWS CAME DOWN WHILE DRIVING AND ONE WHILE PARKED
I RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER FROM FORD IN OCTOBER 2014 STATING THAT THE MOTOR ELECTRONICS COOLANT PUMP MAY FAIL CAUSING THE ENGINE TO OVERHEAT CAUSING IT TO LOSE POWER AND STALL AND INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH. SO FAR I HAVE NEVER RECEIVED A NOTICE TO BRING THE CAR IN TO FIX IT. I DID STOP BY THE LOCAL FORD DEALER TO FIND OUT WHY THE HAVEN'T NOTIFIED ME AND THEY SAID THAT THEY NEVER RECEIVED THE PARTS FROM THE FORD COMPANY. WE ARE PLANNING ON A LONG TRIP SHORTLY BUT AFRAID TO DRIVE THIS CAR. [ ITS BEEN 6 MONTHS SINCE I RECEIVED THE LETTER ] I THINK ITS TIME THEY TAKE CARE OF THE SAFETY PROBLEM. CAN YOU HELP?? *TR
POWER STEERING FAILED - HAD RECALL IN AUGUST PERFORMED BY FORD TO PREVENT THIS BUT STEERING WHEN OUT ANYWAY. TOOK TO FORD DEALER WHO HAD TO REPLACE STEERING COLUMN ANY SAID I HAD TO PAY WHICH THEY SAID IT WASN'T COVERED UNDER SAFETY RECALL (14S05). FORTUNATELY SHE WASN'T DRIVING DOWN HIGHWAY WHEN IT WENT OUT! *TR
THERE IS NO STEERING ASSIST IN THE 2008 FORD ESCAPE. THE WHEEL IS VERY HARD TO TURN EVEN WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. THERE WAS A RECALL PERFORMED IN NOVEMBER (NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V284000) ON THE VEHICLE IN WHICH FORD UPDATED THE SOFTWARE ON THE POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE, BUT LESS THAN 2 MONTHS LATER THE VEHICLE IS VERY UNSAFE AND NEARLY INOPERABLE. I DID OPEN A CASE # WITH FORD DIRECTLY. THE CASE # IS [XXX] AND THEY ARE UNWILLING TO ASSIST. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR
INITIALLY, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALERSHIP TO INVESTIGATE A POP IN THE STEERING COLUMN WHEN TURNED TO THE LEFT AND AN ACCELERATION ISSUE CAUSING SPUTTERING DURING CLIMBS TO HIGHER SPEEDS ON THE FREEWAY. THE ACCELERATION ISSUE WAS ADDRESSED AND REPAIRED AT AN OUT OF POCKET EXPENSE OF $720. THE STEERING ISSUE WAS ADVISED THAT IT WAS CAUSED FROM A DEFECT THAT HAD PROMPTED A RECALL THAT WAS NOT MADE KNOWN TO THE VEHICLE OWNER. THE DEALER RAN DIAGNOSTICS AND DETERMINED THAT THE VEHICLE STEERING PROGRAMMING WAS TO BE UPDATED AND THAT ALL ISSUES WOULD CEASE. MONTHS LATER, FIRST OF THE YEAR, THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED AT THE OWNER'S PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT, PROCEEDED OUT OF PARKING SPACE TO THE SURPRISE OF NO POWER ASSISTED STEERING, CAUSING THE CURRENT DIRECTION OF THE FRONT WHEELS TO GUIDE THE VEHICLE INTO A PARKING GARAGE COLUMN AND DISLODGING THE FRONT RIGHT BUMPER COVER AT THE COVER/FENDER SEAM. OWNER RETURNED VEHICLE TO THE PARK GEAR, DISENGAGED THE IGNITION, ASSESSED THE DAMAGE, AND ONCE AGAIN RESTARTED THE VEHICLE TO THE ADDITIONAL SURPRISE OF WORKING POWER ASSISTED STEERING. OWNER HAS EXPERIENCED THIS ISSUE FOR A CONTINUING FOUR MONTHS, AT RANDOM INTERVALS, WITH SEEMINGLY INCREASINGLY FREQUENCY. REPAIR ESTIMATES ARE AT THE $1500. RANGE AND ONCE ALERTED TO THE SIMILAR EXPERIENCES OF SAME MODEL OWNERS, BELIEVES THIS IS A DEFECT OF THE RECALL SOLUTION FOR A DEFECT. *TR
2008 FORD ESCAPE FAULTY IGNITION IN ORDER TO START THE CAR THE KEY MUST BE PRESSED HARD INTO THE IGNITION WHILE TURNING OTHERWISE THE CAR WON'T START.IT HAS BEEN GETTING WORSE AND I FEEL THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL SO IT CAN BE FIXED. *TR
WHILE DRIVING MY VEHICLE INTO THE PARKING GARAGE AT WORK, THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT. MY STEERING WHEEL LOCKED MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO PULL INTO A PARKING SPACE. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO MY FORD DEALERSHIP TO FIND OUT WHY THE STEERING WHEEL HAD LOCKED UP SINCE I DID HAVE THE RECALL REPAIR DONE ON THE TRUCK IN AUGUST OF 2014. THE SERVICE REP TOLD ME THAT THE TORQUE SENSOR WAS BAD AND THAT THEY CLEARED THE CODES, TEST DROVE IT AND TOLD ME THAT IT WAS READY TO BE PICKED UP. THE SERVICE REP TOLD ME THAT I WOULD HAVE TO GET MY STEERING COLUMN REPLACED TO THE TUNE OF $2,600. I DROVE THE CAR TO WORK THAT MORNING AND THE WRENCH LIT UP ON THE DASHBOARD AND THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED ONCE AGAIN. I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THAT I AM GOING TO HAVE TO COME OUT OF MY POCKET TO PAY FOR A REPAIR FOR SOMETHING I BELIEVE SHOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED BY THE INITIAL RECALL ESPECIALLY SINCE IT WAS LESS THAN 6 MONTHS SINCE I HAD THE RECALL DONE. THIS VEHICLE IS ONLY 7 YEARS OLD AND IT IS RIDICULOUS TO BELIEVE THAT I SHOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR A MALFUNCTION DUE TO NO FAULT OF MY OWN. SO, AS FOR NOW, THE CAR IS GOING TO SIT IN A GARAGE INOPERABLE. FORD HAS GOT TO DO BETTER. *TR
I SUBMITTED A COMPLAINT ON FEBRUARY 2, 2015 IN REFERENCE TO THE STEERING COLUMN LOCKING UP WHILE DRIVING MY CAR TO WORK. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE REPAIR SHOP AND THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN INFORMED ME THAT THE CODES WERE CLEARED AND THE CAR WAS TESTED AND WAS DRIVABLE. HE ALSO TOLD ME THAT I WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMN AT THE COST OF $2,600. IT WAS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT AFTER THE RECALL REPAIR WAS MADE BACK IN AUGUST 2014, THAT THERE SHOULD BE NO OTHER ISSUES PERTAINING TO THE ELECTRONIC STEERING ASSIST OR TORQUE SENSOR MODULE. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH AND READING A LETTER DATED JULY 1, 2014 PERTAINING TO SAFETY RECALL 14S05 FROM THE OFFICE OF [XXX], DIRECTOR OF SERVICE ENGINEERING OPERATIONS, THIS LETTER INSTRUCTED DEALERSHIPS TO "REPROGRAM THE POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE IF NO CODE WAS PRESENT, REPLACE THE TORQUE SENSOR IF CODE B2278 WAS PRESENT OR REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY IF CODE B1342 OR B2277 IS PRESENT". WHAT THE REPROGRAMMING OF THE POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE ACTUALLY DID WAS TO PROGRAM THE STEERING COLUMN SENSOR TO ILLUMINATE THE WRENCH ICON ON THE DASHBOARD TO LET THE DRIVER KNOW THAT THE POWER STEERING ASSIST WAS ABOUT TO BE DISABLED ON THE VEHICLE. THIS IS STILL A SAFETY ISSUE! THIS IS NOT A FIX! WHEN THE VAST MAJORITY OF DRIVERS TAKE THEIR VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP TO BE REPAIRED, THAT IS WHAT THEY EXPECT. THE SICK PART OF THIS REPROGRAMMING THE MODULE IS THAT ONCE THIS NOTIFICATION IS MADE, THE CAR IS INOPERABLE AND FORD WANTS YOU TO BRING THE TRUCK BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THAT SAME STEERING ISSUE REPAIRED AT YOUR COST FOR $2,600. IT IS STILL A SAFETY ISSUE THAT FORD SHOULD HAVE FIXED, NOT REPROGRAMMED YOUR CAR TO NOTIFY YOU THAT YOUR POWER STEERING IS ABOUT TO DISABLE. A RECALL SHOULD BE ISSUED TO REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMNS ON ALL 2008 FORD ESCAPES THAT EXPERIENCE THIS ISSUE. TOOK MY FORD ESCAPE TO DEALER FOR THE STEERING TORQUE SENSOR, RECALL BY FORD #14S05 IN AUGUST 2014. THE DEALER DID NOT GET ANY "BAD" CODES, SO THEY DID A SOFTWARE UPDATE. ON JANUARY 26, I COULD NOT STEER MY CAR. FORTUNATELY, I WAS AT A STOP AND NOT DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY. I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP. THEY SAID THE STEERING TORQUE SENSOR FAILED AND I HAD TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE STEERING ASSEMBLY WHICH IS GOING TO COST ME $1200. FORD WILL NOT COVER THE REPAIR BECAUSE THEY SAID THE "SOFTWARE UPDATE" WAS DONE. I HAVE SEEN SEVERAL OTHER RECORDS OF THE SAME ISSUE NOT BEING COVERED BY FORD. *TR
MY CAR WAS SERVICED AT CENTURY FORD MT. AIRY ON 11/14/2014 AT 110,472 MILES FOR FORD RECALL 14S05. TICKET SHOWED RECALL WORK WAS "COMPLETED". ON 1/24/15 AT 110,898 MILES, THE POWER STEERING FAILED AND ALMOST CAUSED ME TO CRASH. LUCKILY, I WAS ABLE TO FORCE THE STEERING WHEEL TO AVOID THE ACCIDENT. OBVIOUSLY, THE WORK BEING CONDUCTED BY FORD TO CORRECT THIS STEERING FAILURE ISSUE UNDER RECALL 14S05 IS NOT WORKING. THE NHTSA NEEDS TO INVESTIGATE WHAT TYPE OF WORK FORD HAS DONE ON MY CAR AND OTHERS THAT IS NOT CORRECTING THE PROBLEM. FORD MAY JUST BE COMPLETING A "SOFTWARE UPDATE" TO UPDATE THE SOFTWARE FOR THE POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE (PSCM) AND THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MODULE SYSTEM THAT IS NOT CORRECTING THE PROBLEM AND THE ENTIRE STEERING SYSTEM MY NEED TO BE REPLACED TO AVOID SUCH SYSTEM FAILURES IN THE FUTURE. AFTER THE RECALL ON THE POWER STEERING FOR THE 2008 FORD ESCAPE WE HAVE HAD NUMEROUS ISSUES. MOSES FORD OF ST. ALBANS, WV SAID THE COMPUTER MUST RE-SET. AT 7:30 A.M. ON 1/23/15 THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT. FORD MOTOR COMPANY STATES WE MUST PAY FOR ALL REPAIRS EVEN THOUGH A PROBLEM HAS EXISTED. WAS TOLD THAT SOME CARS HAD TO HAVE COMPLETE SYSTEM REPLACED BECAUSE OF PROBLEMS. THIS COMMENT WAS MADE WHEN I CONTACTED FORD MOTOR COMPANY. THE COMPUTER WAS JUST RE-PROGRAMMED ON MINE. *TR
I WENT TO MY FORD GARAGE AT ABOUT 100,000 MILES COMPLAINING THAT THE POWER ASSIST STEERING STOPS WORKING SPORADICALLY. WITH NO WARNING THE CAR STEERS MANUALLY, WITH NO LIGHTS THAT GO ON. AFTER STARTING THE CAR SOMETIMES IT WOULD DRIVE FINE AND SOMETIMES IT WOULD REVERT TO MANUAL STEERING. TOOK IT TO THE GARAGE KNOWING SOMETHING WAS WRONG AND THEY TESTED IT AND TOLD ME THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. AGAIN IT HAPPENED AT ABOUT 115,000 MILES AND WHEN THEY TESTED IT THEY SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH IT. I TOLD THEM THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH IT, WHETHER THE CODE IS SHOWING UP OR NOT. ABOUT 2 MONTHS AND 123,000 MILES THE VEHICLE WAS RECALLED FOR POWER STEERING ASSIST FAIL, WHICH I KNEW WAS THE PROBLEM WITH THE CAR FROM THE BEGINNING. AT THAT TIME, THEY SAID AGAIN, THEY PERFORMED THE RECALL AND NOTHING NEEDS TO BE FIXED. NOW AT 128,000 MILES THE POWER ASSIST FAIL LIGHT COMES ON AND STAYS ON AND I ONLY HAVE MANUAL STEERING. I TOOK IT TO THE GARAGE FOR WHICH I THOUGHT WOULD BE COVERED REPAIRS AND THEY STATED THAT FORD WILL NOT COVER THE STEERING COLUMN REPLACE, WHICH IS NEEDED, BECAUSE THE RECALL SENSOR WAS REPLACED THE LAST TIME I WAS IN. TO ME THAT IS NOT FIXING THE PROBLEM AT ALL, IT IS SIMPLY NOW ABLE TO TELL ME THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE, WHICH I KNEW ABOUT OVER 28,000 MILES AGO. THE GARAGE SAYS IT IS TOTALLY UP TO FORD TO DECIDE IF THEY WILL PAY FOR THE RECALL AND THEY SAY THAT THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE. THIS IS NOT HOW A RECALL SHOULD BE REPAIRED. WE TOOK OUR ESCAPE IN ON 12/10/14 FOR A RECALL FOR A POSSIBLE POWER STEERING FAILURE. THERE WAS NO ISSUES BEFORE THE "FIX" WAS DONE, AFTER THE DEALERSHIP DID THE FIX THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD MOVE ON ITS OWN AND VIBRATE WHEN SITTING AT A STOP. TOOK IT IN FOR A BATTERY AND THE STEERING WHEEL ISSUE INTO THE DEALERSHIP INFORMING THEM WHATEVER THEY "FIXED" NEED TO BE REDONE OR REVERSED HAD NO PROBLEM BEFORE THEY DID RECALL REPROGRAM. THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT FAILED ON MY VEHICLE. THIS SEEMS TO BE AN ISSUE THAT HAS ARISEN WITH A GREAT DEAL OF OWNERS OF FORD ESCAPE HYBRIDS OVER THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS. I HAD TO HAVE THE ENTIRE HCU SYSTEM REPLACED AT A FORD DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT. AS IT WAS NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY, NOR CONSIDERED BY THE COMPANY TO BE AN ISSUE DESERVING OF A RECALL, I HAD TO PAY OUT OF POCKET FOR THE ENTIRE THING, WHICH TOTALED $4,863.00 (AND IT TOOK FIVE DAYS TO GET THE WORK COMPLETED). I ALSO HAD TO PAY TO RENT A CAR FOR THE SEVERAL DAYS IT TOOK TO GET THE PART AND PERFORM THE WORK, WHICH WAS ANOTHER $200.00. I RECEIVED NHTSA RECALL 14V-284 FOR THE ELECTRICAL POWER ASSIST STEERING ON MY 2008 FORD ESCAPE. I TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO THE ROMEO MI FORD DEALERSHIP FOR THE RECALL WORK ON 1/12/2015. THE WORK THAT WAS PERFORMED UNDER THE RECALL WAS THE REPLACEMENT OF THE TORQUE SENSOR. FOLLOWING THE WORK I NOTICED ON THE DRIVE HOME (ON 1/12/15) THAT THE STEERING WHEEL WAS SEVERELY MISALIGNED AND THAT THE VEHICLE WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. I CALLED BACK THE DEALERSHIP ON 1/12/15 AND MADE A FOLLOW UP APPOINTMENT. FOLLOWING THE DIAGNOSTICS RUN THE VEHICLE SHOWED A FAULTY POWER STEERING SYSTEM. I WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR REPLACING THE STEERING COLUMN. WE TOOK IT TO THE SHOP WHERE THE TONE RING AND SPEED SENSOR WERE REPLACED. IN DECEMBER 2014, WE HAD SIMILAR ISSUES AND WE TOOK IT TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS MY STEERING WHEEL WOULD SHAKE AND SHUT OFF. THIS PROBLEM STARTED RIGHT OVER MY 40,000 MILE MARK. STRANGELY THIS PROBLEM WOULD HAPPEN FOR FOUR MONTHS OUT OF THE YEAR, THEN WOULD COME BACK ON. I REPORTED IT SEVERAL TIMES TO THE DEALER WHEN I TOOK IT IN FOR MY LIFETIME OIL CHANGE. IN JULY 2014 I RECEIVED A LETTER STATING THAT FORD MOTOR COMPANY HAS ISSUED A RECALL TO FIX THE PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING. IN THE SAME PARAGRAPH IT SAID REPLACEMENT OF TORQUE SENSOR OR STEERING COLUMN REPLACEMENT MAY BE NEEDED. I TOOK THE CAR IN AUG. AND A REBOOT WAS DONE TO THE COMPUTER SO THE ERROR FOR THE STEERING FAULT WOULD ALARM. I THOUGHT THIS PROBLEM WAS FIXED. WELL I WAS DRIVING LAST WEEK, AND MY STEERING ALARM WENT OFF THEN MY STEERING SHUT OFF. I CALLED THE DEALER AND TRIED TO GET THE CAR BACK IN TO FIX THE STEERING PROBLEM, I WAS TOLD THAT FORD DECIDED TO NOT PAY FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN THAT WE WERE GOING TO HAVE TO PAY FOR IT OURSELVES. I CALLED THE FORD HELP LINE, AND THEY CREATED A CASE# AND I SPOKE WITH A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT PEOPLE, THEY THEN TOLD ME THAT UNLESS THE STEERING WAS OUT AT THE EXACT TIME OF THE RECALL THAT THE DON'T HAVE TO FIX IT. I CONTINUED TO ARGUE MY LETTER STATING THAT IT SAID, THAT EITHER ITEM COLUMN OR SENSOR WERE COVERED AND GOING TO BE REPLACED. NOWHERE DOES IT SAY ONLY THE FIRST TIME YOU TAKE IT IN FOR THE RECALL, EITHER OR WOULD BE REPLACED. THE WOMAN THEN KEPT REITERATING THAT FORD DOESN'T HAVE THE FINANCIAL RECOURSES TO FIX THE PROBLEM. WOW APPARENTLY EVERYONE ELSE HAS $2000 LAYING AROUND TO FIX IT TOO. I AM SO DISAPPOINTED IN THIS SLIMY BUSINESS PRACTICE BY THIS COMPANY. I EXPECTED MORE FROM SUCH A REPUTABLE COMPANY. THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY DENIED REPAIRING THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THE RECALL WORK WAS ALREADY DONE ON THE VEHICLE. MY COMPLAINT IS THAT THE SERVICE ACTION COMPLETED ON 12/10/2014 BY THE LAWLEY FORD, SILVER CITY DEALERSHIP, DIRECTED BY THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY, DID NOTHING TO ACTUALLY FIX A KNOWN SAFETY ISSUE. IN ADDITION, IT PROVIDED MY FAMILY WITH A FALSE SENSE OF SAFETY BECAUSE IT IS REASONABLE TO ASSUME THE STEERING ISSUE WAS RESOLVED. *JS
THIS IS THE SECOND TIME IN TWO YEARS THAT THE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING HAS FAILED IN THE VEHICLE. THE FIST WAS IN 2012 AND CAUSED THE STEERING TO LOCK UP WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING. AT THAT TIME I HAD THE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN REPLACED AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR A CONSIDERABLE EXPENSE. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY LOOSING STEERING SENSATION IN A WAY THE VEHICLE FEELS AS IF IT IS SLIPPING ON ICE. THE STEERING WHEEL WILL TURN AT HIGHWAY SPEED WITH NO RESPONSE FROM THE VEHICLE. NEEDLESS TO SAY THIS IS A NIGHTMARE. THE VEHICLE FEELS UNSAFE AND OUT OF CONTROL WHEN IT EXHIBITS THESE CHARACTERISTICS. I CHECKED RECALL INFO AND HAVE FOUND THAT THIS IS A COMMON COMPLAINT ON THESE VEHICLES. THERE IS A RECALL, BUT MY VIN IS NOT INCLUDED. I HOPE THIS GETS HANDLED QUICKLY BEFORE THERE ARE MORE ACCIDENTS AND INJURIES. *TR
SHORTLY AFTER TAKING MY 2008 FORD ESCAPE BACK TO THE DEALER TO ADDRESS A POWER STEERING RECALL IN OCTOBER 2014, THE POWER STEERING FAILED. ACCORDING TO FORD, THIS WAS RECALL 14S05. THIS WAS NOT THE FIRST TIME THE POWER STEERING FAILED, BUT IN THE PREVIOUS INSTANCES THE PROBLEM WOULD RESOLVE ITSELF AFTER RESTARTING THE VEHICLE. IN DECEMBER 2014 WHEN THE POWER STEERING FAILED, THE PROBLEM PERSISTED. FORTUNATELY, IT'S A CAR MY SON DRIVES WHEN HE IS HOME FOR COLLEGE BREAK SO WE WEREN'T USING IT THAT OFTEN AND I HELD OFF TAKING IT BACK TO FORD DEALER. I WAS ABLE TO TAKE THE ESCAPE BACK TO THE DEALER THIS MONTH TO REPORT THE STEERING PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD THE ESCAPE NOW NEEDS TO REPLACE THE TORQUE SENSOR FOR THE POWER STEERING. (IN OCTOBER, THE DEALER REPROGRAMMED THE PSM AND MADE NO OTHER REPAIRS TO STEERING PARTS.) ALL OF THE NEWS REPORTS ABOUT THE RECALL THAT I HAVE READ THIS SPRING MENTION THAT THE TORQUE SENSOR WAS ONE OF THREE THINGS THAT COULD HAVE BEEN ADDRESSED IN THE RECALL. THE TORQUE SENSOR IN MY ESCAPE WAS NOT CHANGED, AND NOW THE FORD DEALER IS QUOTING A PRICE OF $500 TO $600 TO DO THE REPAIR. I BELIEVE THIS TORQUE SENSOR SHOULD BE REPLACED NOW AS PART OF THE RECALL FORD MADE FOR POWER STEERING PROBLEMS. THANK YOU.
2008 FORD ESCAPE. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO POWER STEERING SYSTEM ISSUES. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, TO ADDRESS THE STEERING RECALL # 14V284000. UP UNTIL THAT TIME, THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. ON DECEMBER 20, 2014, WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, SUDDENLY THE ENTIRE POWER STEERING SYSTEM WENT OUT. THE CONSUMER RETURNED TO THE DEALER. APPARENTLY, WHAT THE CONSUMER EXPERIENCED WAS DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL. FORD MOTOR COMPANY STATED THEY WOULD NOT PAY FOR THE REPAIRS, BECAUSE THE SAFETY NOTICE WAS A ONE-TIME FIX. *JB
