ON MARCH 16, 2013 I WAS DRIVING MY VEHICLE WHEN I LOST POWER IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. I PUSHED THE GAS PETAL BUT VEHICLE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. THE WRENCH LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON MY DASHBOARD. THE VEHICLE WAS JERKING. I WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD. EXAMINED UNDER HOOD AND EVERYTHING APPEARED OK. VEHICLE STARTED OK AND SOUNDED OK SO I CONTINUED TO DRIVE. APPROXIMATELY 30 MINUTES LATER, THE SAME THING HAPPENED. VEHICLE WAS JERKING WORSE AND LOST POWER. I PULLED OFF ROAD AND SHUT THE TRUCK OFF. RESTARTED OKAY AND DECIDED TO DRIVE BACK HOME. I WAS FORTUNATE THAT THERE WAS NOT A LOT OF TRAFFIC AND IT WAS EARLY IN THE MORNING. OTHERWISE I COULD HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT. SOMEONE COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED WHEN MY TRUCK STALLED. I HAD MY 83 AND 81 YEAR OLD PARENTS WITH ME. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP IN MY HOME TOWN AND PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED AS THROTTLE BODY FAULTY. REPAIRS WERE MADE, I PAID FOR THEM, AND LEFT DEALERSHIP. LOSING POWER AND VEHICLE DYING ON THE ROAD CERTAINLY SEEMS TO BE A SAFETY HAZARD. *TR
WHILE SLOWING DOWN TO MAKE A TURN OR COME TO A STOP, VEHICLES TRANSMISSION JERKS VIOLENTLY. AFTER STARTING THE VEHICLE AND PUTTING IT IN GEAR, THE VEHICLE JERKS AND SLAMS INTO GEAR. WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY AND TRYING TO SPEED UP AFTER GOING THROUGH TOLLS, VEHICLES RPM'S JUMP WILDLY, STRAINS ENGINE BECAUSE VEHICLE WILL NOT GO INTO GEAR. CAUSING YOU TO HAVE TO SLOW DOWN AND NEARLY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT WITH VEHICLES BEHIND YOU. FORD TOLD ME (MAY 8, 2013) IT IS A LEAKING SEAL ON THE TRANSMISSION, BUT THE PART IS ON BACK-ORDER UNTIL THE MIDDLE OF JULY. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED AND LUNGED FORWARD ABNORMALLY. THE CONTACT DID NOT TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER OR A MECHANIC FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TEST. THE CONTACT CALLED THE DEALER AND THE DEALER STATED THE THROTTLE COULD BE AN ISSUE. I WAS RECENTLY REAR ENDED ON THE DRIVER SIDE BY A MINIVAN TRAVELLING AT ATLEAST 40 MPH. THE FORCE OF THE COLLISION RESULTED IN MY SEAT BACK OF 2010 FORD ESCAPE TO AUTOMATICALLY RECLINE SEVERAL NOTCHES BACK. AFTER I STOPPED, I COULD NOT PULL THE SEAT BACK TO ITS ORIGINAL POSITION. *TR
FIRST INCIDENT: I WAS DRIVING ALONG RTE 95 HEADING TOWARDS THE TAPANZEE BRIDGE GOING 65 MPH WHEN SUDDENLY THE POWER STEERING WENT AND IT BECAME VERY DIFFICULT TO STEER. I IMMEDIATELY TRIED TO SAFELY EXIT THE HIGHWAY TO FIND OUT WHAT WAS WRONG. IT WAS EXTREMELY HARD TO STEER, BUT THANKFULLY I FOUND A FAIRLY SAFE PLACE TO STOP AND TURN THE CAR OFF. I WAITED ABOUT 5 MINUTES TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT TO DO. THEN I STARTED THE CAR AND THE PROBLEM WAS GONE. SECOND INCIDENT: MY WIFE WAS COMING HOME FROM WORK ON APRIL 11TH, 2013 WHEN SHE STOPPED AT A STOP SIGN. WHEN SHE BEGAN TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN ONTO A BUSY STREET, THE POWER STEERING WENT AGAIN. LUCKILY SHE MADE IT HOME SAFELY AND INFORMED ME OF WHAT HAPPENED. I TURNED THE CAR ON AND TOOK IT FOR A DRIVE. THE POWER STEERING WAS BACK ON. THERE WERE AT LEAST TWO MORE TIMES WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE POWER STEERING WENT OFF AND AFTER AWHILE CAME BACK ON. WE HAD A NEW POWER STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY PUT IN OUR FORD ESCAPE ON JUNE 6TH, 2013. LUCKILY WE HAD A FORD PREMIUM CARE WARRANTY PLAN AND THIS PROBLEM WAS COVERED, BUT HAD TO PAY $100 DEDUCTIBLE. RECENTLY FORD HAS ANNOUNCED A SAFETY RECALL ON THE POWER STEERING ASSEMBLY ON FORD ESCAPES MANUFACTURED IN CERTAIN PARTS OF THE COUNTRY. MY VIN NUMBER WAS NOT PART OF THAT SAFETY RECALL, YET I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY POWER STEERING. WHAT WOULD I HAVE HAD TO PAY TO REPLACE THIS POWER STEERING IF I HADN'T HAD A WARRANTY PLAN? I WANT FORD TO REIMBURSE MY $100 DEDUCTIBLE, BUT THEY SAY SINCE MY VIN NUMBER AT THIS TIME WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL THEY WON'T REIMBURSE ME. WHAT KIND OF CUSTOMER RELATIONS IN THIS WITH A BIG COMPANY LIKE FORD WHO WANTS TO SELL CARS IN GOOD FAITH. IT IS LUCKY FOR THEM THAT MY FAMILY OR SOMEONE ELSE WAS NOT INJURED WHEN THE POWER STEERING WENT IN MY FORD ESCAPE. *TR
THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED THE EXACT CONDITION AS DESCRIBED IN NHTSA INVESTIGATION # PE13003. TRAVELING STEADILY AT 30 MPH, FELT A SUDDEN 'THUMP' FROM THE DRIVETRAIN. THE 'WRENCH' INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON THE INDICATOR PANEL AND VEHICLE WENT INTO "LIMP HOME MODE' AND ENGINE CONTINUED TO RUN AT LOW RPM (@ 900). THE THROTTLE DID NOT RESPOND AND VEHICLE COULD NOT BE ACCELERATED. ELECTRICAL AND HYDRAULIC POWER WAS MAINTAINED, PULLED OVER TO SIDE OF ROAD AND STOPPED NORMALLY. ONCE IN PARK THE ENGINE BEGAN TO REV ERRATICALLY AT LOWER RPMS. TURNED OFF ENGINE, REMOVED KEY. I HAVE AN OBD SCANNER WHICH I USED TO CHECK FOR CODES - DELIVERED CODE "P2111". WE WERE ONLY A FEW BLOCKS FROM OUR HOME, RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AND IT RETURNED TO NORMAL OPERATION AND SUCCESSFULLY DROVE HOME AND HAS CONTINUED NORMAL OPERATION TO PRESENT TIME (MARCH 11, 2013). *TR
I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND MY ENGINE STALLED I TURNED OFF OF THE MAIN ROAD AND PUSHED ON THE BRAKE. AS I WAS SLOWING DOWN MY CAR BEGAN TO IDLE VERY ROUGH AND JUMPY. I PUT IT IN PARK AND TURNED IT OFF. I RESTARTED THE CAR AND HAD TO PUSH ON THE GAS PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE IT STARTED DROVE AWAY AND IT WAS FINE COUPLE MONTHS LATER THE SAME THING EXCEPT. IT WILL NOW ONLY GO A MILE OR SO BEFORE IT HAPPENS AGAIN. IT HAS HAPPENED ABOUT 10 TIMES IN 2 DAYS. I'VE CALLED SEVERAL DEALERS TO GET A PART AND THEY ARE ALL ON BACK ORDER WHICH TELLS ME THERE ARE LOTS OF PROBLEMS WITH THIS PART. *TR
I CAME TO A STOP AT THE TOP OF MY STREET AND ACCELERATED OUT TO MAKE A TURN ONTO THE MAIN ROAD WHEN THE CAR JUST LOST POWER AND WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. I HAD TO PULL OFF THE ROAD AND WAS LUCKY THE CAR BEHIND DID NOT HIT ME. THIS HAS HAPPENED 2 MORE TIMES INCLUDING ON AN EXPRESSWAY WHERE I HAD TO PULL OFF AND GET IT TOWED. *TR
I HAD APPROXIMATELY FOUR OCCURRENCES OF LOSING ALL THROTTLE RESPONSE, BASICALLY A COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER WHILE DRIVING ON THE LOS ANGELES FREEWAY SYSTEM. ENGINE RPM DROPS TO 1,000 AND PROVIDES IDLE POWER ONLY. A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION WHILE ON A 4 LANE CONGESTED HIGHWAY TRAVELING AT SPEEDS UPTO 65 MPH. *TR
2010 FORD ESCAPE. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO SUDDEN UNEXPECTED LOSS OF ACCELERATION IN VEHICLE. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE WOULD COMPLETELY STOP OR SLOW TO A MINISCULE SPEED. *JB
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ENGINE STALLED WHILE SHE DROVE AT 65 MPH. THE ENGINE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AFTER THE FAILURE OCCURRED. THE FAILURE WAS EXPERIENCED SEVERAL TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO FOUND THAT THE EVAPORATION CANISTER. THE MAIN COMPUTER SYSTEM WAS RESET BUT THE FAILURE WAS NOT CORRECTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 53,000 AND THE CURRENT FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 54,306.
DRIVING MY 2010 ESCAPE ON THE HIGHWAY THE ENGINE STALLED. THE SPEED I WAS GOING WAS ABOUT 60 MPH. WITH NO PRIOR WARNING THE WRENCH LIGHT AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, THE RPM'S FLUCTUATED BETWEEN 0500 AND 2500 AND I COULD NOT ACCELERATE THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER SAID THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT MY EXPENSE AS IT WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY. *TR
I PURCHASED A 2010 FORD ESCAPE XLT, USED ON FEB 28, 2012 FROM A FORD DEALER, NORTHEAST PHILA. IT HAD 52,000 MILES. I PURCHASED AN EXTENDED 3YEAR 36,000MILE BUMPER TO BUMPER EXTENDED WARRANTY FROM DATE OF PURCHASE. UPON DRIVING OFF THE LOT, I NOTICED HIGH IDLE AT REST, LOW ACCELERATION AND SHIFTING BY ITSELF WHEN ACCELERATING AND TRYING TO SLOW TO STOP. I IMMEDIATELY TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER, A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER. SERVICE MGR. SAID THAT HE TOOK MY VEHICLE HOME, DROVE IT, FOUND NOTHING WRONG. I SHOWED HIM SERVICE BULLETINS FROM FORD DOCUMENTING VEHICLE ACCIDENTS, SIMILAR COMPLAINTS, AS A RESULT OF THE MAIN COMPUTER PROGRAM OF THE VEHICLE, WRONG CODING, CODES NOT BEING READ CORRECTLY, ETC. SERVICE MANAGER DENIED SEEING THIS INFORMATION, DESPITE ME GIVING HIM COPIES. IT IS NOW AUGUST 16, 2013, VEHICLE IS WORSE, IDLING AT REST 3000 RPM, 10-20 MPH IDLES AT 4,000-5,000 RPM, LOUDER THAN THE RADIO. VEHICLE SHIFTING ITSELF, HESITATING, WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE ONTO A HIGHWAY RAMP, OR GOING UP A HILL. VEHICLE SHIFTING, AND JERKING WHILE TRYING TO SLOW TO A STOP. TOOK VEHICLE TO FORD DEALER ROUTE 1 LANGHORNE, PA, CLOSER TO MY HOME. WAS TOLD BY SERVICE REP THAT COMPUTER CODES FROM VEHICLE NOT BEING PICKED UP BY SERVICE DIAGNOSTIC COMPUTER. "WE HAD TO CLEAR YOUR VEHICLE COMPUTER AND REPROGRAM IT. NOT COVERED UNDER MANUFACTURER OR EXTENDED WARRANTY. THEREFORE YOU PAY THE $90 DIAGNOSTIC FEE". IT IS ROUTINE MAINTENANCE". I SAID HOW IS A COMPUTER MALFUNCTION IN THE VEHICLE, REQUIRING A COMPLETE WIPE AND REPROGRAM ROUTINE MAINTENANCE? THEY REFUSED TO RETURN MY $90. VEHICLE STILL SAME PROBLEM, SLIGHTLY LESS, A LITTLE MORE QUIETER, STILL RUNNING 4000 RPM ON MILD ACCELERATION. I AM AFRAID, BECAUSE IT WAS SHIFTING UP WHEN I WAS TRYING TO SLOW TO A STOP. *TR
DRIVING AT 45-50 MPH, CAR STALLED AND "WRENCH-SHAPED" WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. BY DESCRIPTIONS I'VE READ, CAR WENT INTO "LIMP HOME" MODE. I WAS ABLE TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD... NO ACCELERATION CAPABILITY, TIGHT STEERING, RPM BOUNCING BETWEEN 500-900. SHUT OFF ENGINE, RESTARTED, RAN FINE FOR NEXT 30 MINUTES OF DRIVE WITH SPEEDS RANGING FROM IDLE AND 10-60 MPH. FRIEND NOTIFIED ME OF THE BELOW OPEN INVESTIGATION THAT FITS WHAT HAPPENED. I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE GOING APPROXIMATELY 73 MPH, WHEN THE CAR STARTED LOSING SPEED, THE WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON, AND I WASN'T ABLE TO ACCELERATE. I HAD TO MANEUVER THE CAR OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, CUT IT OFF AND THEN RESTART. IT SEEMED TO BE FINE AT THAT POINT. HOWEVER, THAT SAME MORNING I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, ONLY IT WAS IN MY DRIVEWAY. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND RESTARTED IT AND IT SEEMED FINE. THIS IS TERRIBLY DANGEROUS SINCE IT HAPPENS ON THE INTERSTATE AND IF YOU ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC AND ARE UNABLE TO KEEP UP THE SPEED, IT COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. I HAVE READ MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM WITH DIFFERENT FORD MODELS AND I BELIEVE THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL FOR SAFETY REASONS. *TR
ON THE MORNING OF FEBRUARY 25TH, I WAS PULLING OUT OF MY GARAGE WHEN MY CAR JUST STOPPED ACCELERATING AND THE "WRENCH" LIGHT CAME ON. IT WAS BARELY IDLING, SO I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND RESTARTED IT. IT STARTED NORMALLY, SO I WENT ON TO WORK. THAT EVENING, I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE IN THE PASSING LANE GOING APPROXIMATELY 75 MPH WHEN THE CAR SORT OF LURCHED AND THEN THE "WRENCH" LIGHT CAME ON AND THE CAR INSTANTLY STARTED TO SLOW DOWN. I COULD NOT ACCELERATE AT ALL. I HAD TO WAIT FOR TRAFFIC TO MOVE IN THE RIGHT LANE, WHICH WAS HORRIBLY DANGEROUS, AND THEN PULL OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND THEN RESTARTED IT. IT TOOK A SECOND, BUT THE CAR RESTARTED AND THE WRENCH LIGHT WAS OFF, SO I GOT BACK ON THE INTERSTATE AGAIN. THAT EVENING I STARTED LOOKING ON THE INTERNET TO SEE IF ANYONE ELSE HAD EXPERIENCED THIS SAME PROBLEM, AND THAT WAS WHEN I SAW THAT THERE WAS AN INVESTIGATION STARTED BY THE NHTSA IN REGARDS TO THAT VERY SAME PROBLEM OCCURRING IN SEVERAL FORD VEHICLES. THIS WAS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS BECAUSE WHEN IT HAPPENS, I HAVE NO CONTROL OVER THE SPEED ANYMORE AND I AM AT THE MERCY OF THE CARS ALL AROUND ME. I COULD HAVE EASILY CAUSED AN ACCIDENT THAT DAY. THEN, ABOUT A WEEK LATER IT HAPPENED AGAIN WHILE I WAS ON A BUSY CITY STREET GOING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH. FINALLY, YESTERDAY MORNING, MARCH 20TH, IT HAPPENED ON THE INTERSTATE AGAIN. THE DEALER SAYS THERE ARE NO ERROR CODES, BUT THEY SAID THEY THINK ITS THE THROTTLE BODY AND THAT IT WILL COST ABOUT $300 DOLLARS TO FIX. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL. THIS INVESTIGATION NEEDS TO BE CONCLUDED AND A RECALL NEEDS TO BE ISSUED BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SINCE IT HAPPENS AT FASTER SPEEDS, WHILE ON THE INTERSTATE. *TR
UPON ENTERING THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC ON HIGHWAY MY 2010 FORD ESCAPE BEGAN TO ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN AND INCREASING SPEED, REALIZING WHAT WAS HAPPENING I ENGAGED THE BRAKE TO NO AVAIL, I WAS UNABLE TO STOP MY VEHICLE. I NAVIGATED TO THE SHOULDER AND WAS GAINING SPEED ON THE TRAFFIC AHEAD SO I LOOKED FOR AN EXIT INTO A PARKING LOT WITH NO ONE WALKING IN MY WAY AND TURNED INTO THE LOT LITERALLY ON TWO WHEELS DUE TO MY INCREASING SPEED. I SAW A WOODED AREA WITH A SNOW BANK AND THOUGHT I WOULD HEAD THAT WAY RATHER THAN THE ALTERNATIVE OF OTHER VEHICLES, BUILDING OR PEOPLE. AS I GOT CLOSER I THEN TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AND STOPPED BUT NOT AFTER STANDING ON MY BRAKES AND SMELLING BURNING FROM THEM. *TR
2010 FORD ESCAPE. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO THROTTLE CONTROL MALFUNCTION AND REQUESTS REIMBURSEMENT FOR REPAIRS. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY LOST ALL ACCELERATION WHILE TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY IN CRUISE CONTROL MODE. THE RPM WOULD NOT GO ABOVE 700 DESPITE, THE CONSUMER APPLYING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE LOCAL FORD SERVICE DEPARTMENT GAVE THE CONSUMER SOME TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS TO RESET THE VEHICLE. THE SERVICE ADVISOR EXPLAINED, THE COMPUTER HAD STOPPED FUNCTIONING., WHICH CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO SHUT DOWN. THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED TO ALLOW THE VEHICLE TO SIT IN THE OFF POSITION FOR A FEW MINUTES AND THE RE-START IT AGAIN. IT PROVIDED A TEMPORARY FIX, WHICH ALLOWED THE CONSUMER TO CONTINUE TO HER DESTINATION. THE AFTER THE CONSUMER RETRIEVED HER VEHICLE, THE LOW PRESSURE SENSOR HAD ACTIVATED. SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO HER LOCAL MECHANIC, WHO OBSERVED THE VEHICLE WAS LEAKING TRANSMISSION FLUID ON THE DRIVER SIDE BETWEEN THE AXLE AND TRANSMISSION. THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER. AN INSPECTION REVEALED THE LEAK WAS COMING FROM A SEAL. WHEN THE CONSUMER PICKED THE VEHICLE UP, LATER THAT EVENING, THE LOW TIRE PRESSURE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A TIRE DEALER, WHERE THEY FOUND A SCREW IN THE SIDEWALL OF THE DRIVER FRONT TIRE. THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED, SHE WOULD NEED TO PURCHASE TWO NEW TIRES. *JB
ON FEB 22, 2013 I EXPERIENCED A PROBLEM WITH MY 2010 FORD ESCAPE, WHILE CLOSING THE REAR LIFTGATE MY BACK WINDOW COMPLETELY SHATTERED - RESULTING IN MY HAVING TO REPLACE THE WINDOW WHICH COST ME $466.83. AFTER SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET, I FOUND THE FORD KNOWS OF THIS PROBLEM AND IT HAS HAPPENED ON OTHER VEHICLES - MY PROBLEM OCCURRED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY AND ALSO IN THE EARLY MORNING HOURS. I ALSO INCURRED MINOR CUTS AND LACERATIONS DUE TO CLEANING UP THE BROKEN GLASS. I BELIEVE SINCE FORD MOTOR CO. KNEW OF THIS PROBLEM AND FAILED TO NOTIFY OWNERS OF THIS, I SHOULD BE ENTITLED FOR REIMBURSEMENT OF THE COST FOR REPAIRING THE WINDOW, SINCE IT WAS A DEFECTED PRODUCT. *TR
WHILE DRIVING TO WORK ON I10 AT 60 MILES PER HR IN HOUSTON TX. THE ESCAPE LOST POWER AND WAS HARD TO STEER. I LIMPED OFF THE ROAD AND SHUT THE ESCAPE DOWN AND RESTARTED IT. THE ESCAPE WORKED FINE AGAIN. THIS HAPPENED TWICE MORE OVER THE NEXT MONTHS. I AM TAKING THE ESCAPE TO RUSSELL SMITH FORD IN HOUSTON TX TO HAVE THEM CORRECT THE PROBLEM. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AT NIGHT, GOING 40 MPH ON A STREET WHEN SUDDENLY MY CAR DECELERATING WITHOUT WARNING AND CAME TO A STOP ON THE SIDE OF A BUSY STREET. THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON HOWEVER, I WAS NOT ABLE TO GET IT TO MOVE. I HAD THE TOW COMPANY COME GET ME AND DROPPED IT OFF AT THE FORD DEALERSHIP. IT APPEARS THAT THE THROTTLE BODY WENT OUT WHILE I WAS DRIVING. NORMALLY I WOULDN'T REPORT THIS, BUT IT SEEMS TO BE A COMMON DANGEROUS EVENT WITH THE FORD ESCAPE. *TR
THE FORD DIED ON THE INTERSTATE THE SECOND DAY(2/11/13) I OWNED IT. IT TOTALLY LOST POWER AND I HAD TO COAST ONTO THE SHOULDER AND WAIT. I RETURNED IT TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY KEPT IT FOR A DAY AND FOUND NOTHING. IT OCCURRED THREE TIMES THE NEXT WEEK AND I RETURNED TO THE DEALER. THEY CLEANED SOMETHING AND THE CAR WORKED WITHOUT INCIDENT FOR A COUPLE WEEKS. THE CAR HAS INTERMITTENTLY QUIT OVER THE LAST COUPLE MONTHS. IT GOT REAL BAD THIS WEEK (7/10/13) AND WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP THE COMPUTER FINALLY REGISTERED A THROTTLE PROBLEM. THE PART IS ON NATIONAL BACK ORDER AND SHOULD TAKE A MONTH TO GET. *TR

WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER TO SHOULDER AND STOPPED CAR WITH THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. AAA TOWED US TO HOTEL, SENTRY FORD IN MEDFORD, MA TOOK CAR FROM THERE TO DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT. THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE BRAKE BOOSTER ASSEMBLY WAS NOT COVERED, SINCE CAR WAS ABOUT 4 MOS. PAST WARRANTY. TOTAL BILL $1617.33. (DOES NOT INCLUDE THE COST OF A 4 DAY RENTAL CAR.) IF I HAD NOT BEEN IN THE RIGHT LANE AND IN SLOW TRAFFIC, WHEN THE BRAKES FAILED, I WOULD HAVE BEEN IN VERY SERIOUS TROUBLE. *TR

MY DAUGHTER PHONE ME FOR HELP AND I WENT TO HER LOCATION AND WE TRADED VEHICLES AND I TRIED TO DRIVE IT BUT IT WOULDN'T ACCELERATE AS BEFORE. THE ENGINE WOULD IDLE AND THE SPEEDOMETER INDICATED 3 MPH. I NOTIFIED FORD AND REQUESTED A WRECKER AND THEN WAS ABLE TO GET THE ESCAPE TO DRIVE ABOUT ANOTHER MILE BEFORE IT STALLED AGAIN. I WAITED FOR A WRECKER THAT NEVER CAME AND I FINALLY STARTED THE ENGINE AGAIN AND ENTERED THE INTERSTATE AND TRAVELED ABT SIX MILES AT 65 -70 MPH WHEN IT LOST POWER AGAIN. I IDLED AT 3 MPH FOR ABOUT A MILE TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY WERE CLOSED. FINALLY I IDLED ANOTHER 2 MILES TO THE DAUGHTER'S RESIDENCE AND PARKED THE VEHICLE IN HER GARAGE.THE NEXT DAY I WENT TO AUTOZONE AND I ASKED THEM WHAT CODES P2111 AND P2112 WERE AND THEY ADVISE ME IT HAD TO DO WITH THE THROTTLE BODY. I THEN DROVE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AT 3 MPH AND LEFT IT . I PURCHASED A THROTTLE BODY FROM ANOTHER FORD DEALERSHIP AND INSTALLED IT IN ABOUT TWENTY MINUTES. IT SEEMS TO BE RUNNING GOOD NOW AFTER TEST DRIVING IT FOR 15 MILES WITH NO ISSUES. THE VEHICLE'S WARRANTY EXPIRED @ 3YRS OR 36,000 MILES. *TR

I WAS ABLE TO COAST OVER TO BUS LANE. 2ND FAILURE (2/4/13) WAS AT 50MPH AFTER TRAVELING 30 MILES IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. I DROVE DIRECTLY TO A TRANSMISSION SHOP AND WAS TOLD "WHAT AN EXTREME SAFETY ISSUE THIS COULD BE AND THAT THIS WAS AN EXPENSIVE TRANSMISSION TO REBUILD AND IT WOULD BE $2000 TO $2500." 3RD FAILURE (2/5/13) AND BY NOW I AM QUICK TO START EMERGENCY FLASHERS. I WAS UNABLE TO RESTART IN N. I WAS ABLE TO PULL INTO A TURN LANE AND HAD TO TURN ESCAPE OFF AND RESTART. I STARTED RESEARCHING ON INTERNET AND DETERMINED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY. 4TH FAILURE (2/11/13) SAME SENERIO. 2/14/13 I DROVE TO DON REID FORD, MAITLAND, FL. I SPOKE TO THE SERVICE MANAGER WHO AGREED WITH ME THAT THE PROBLEM WAS THE THROTTLE BODY. $300 FIX INCLUDED $99. LABOR WITH A 12 MONTH WARRANTY AT ANY FORD DEALER. THAT POINT SOLD ME SINCE THIS VEHICLE WAS LIKELY TO TRAVEL OUT OF TOWN, AND THAT IT COULD BE DONE WHILE I WAITED. I WAS NOT HAPPY TO CHECK MY PAPERWORK AFTER I GOT HOME AND FIND THAT INSTEAD OF STATING THE ISSUE IT SAID "CUSTOMER STATES REPLACE THROTTLE BODY PER CUSTOMER REQUEST" I CALLED THE SERVICE MANAGER AND EXPRESSED MY CONCERN THAT THIS VERY DANGEROUS SAFETY ISSUE WAS NOT DOCUMENTED ON MY PAPERWORK. I WAS TOLD THAT SINCE THE DEALER DID NOT DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM, WHICH WOULD HAVE COST ANOTHER $99 THAT THIS WAS THE WAY IT HAD TO BE WRITTEN UP. I BELIEVE THAT THIS SUDDEN GAS PEDAL FAILURE COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT AND SHOULD BE A RECALL BEFORE A DEATH OCCURS. THIS 2010 WAS BUILT 12/09. WE BOUGHT THIS ESCAPE 10/3/12 WITH 73,600 MILES ON IT. THIS OCCURRED APPROXIMATELY 3-4 TIMES MORE OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS. I CALLED THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND DESCRIBED THE PROBLEM, AND TOOK IT IN. I CALLED BY TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND DESCRIBED THAT THE SAME THING WAS STILL HAPPENING. THEY EXPLAINED THAT THEY COULD SEE NOTHING ON THE MACHINE THAT INDICATED A PROBLEM. I CALLED FORD AND ASK ABOUT ANY RECALLS AND WAS TOLD THERE WERE NONE FOR MY VEHICLE. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT RECOMMENDED THAT I WAIT UNTIL THE PROBLEM MANIFESTED AND CALL BECAUSE THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. MONTHS( LATE JUNE) THEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN. I TOOK IT IN AGAIN AND WAS TOLD THAT EVERYTHING WAS FINE. ON A TRIP TO CHARLOTTE NC GOING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH IN THE LEFT LANE, MY CAR SUDDENLY LOST POWER (SCARY!!!) I WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT TO THE RIGHT SHOULDER WITHOUT INCIDENT. MY CAR DID THIS APPROXIMATELY EIGHT TIMES BETWEEN CONCORD NC AND GOLDSBORO NC (WITH TWO YOUNG CHILDREN IN THE CAR). UPON RETURN, I CALLED THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND TOOK IT IN AGAIN. THIS TIME THEY IDENTIFIED THE THROTTLE BODY--A DAY LATE AND A DOLLAR SHORT--MY CAR'S WARRANTY EXPIRED APPROXIMATELY TWO WEEKS EARLIER. MY CAR IS AT THE FORD DEALERSHIP AS I WRITE THIS WAITING TO BE REPAIRED. I AM TOLD THE THROTTLE BODY IS ON A NATIONAL BACKLOG. I FEEL THAT I HAVE BEEN MISTREATED AS A CONSUMER ON SO MANY LEVELS. *TR

I WAS LEAVING THE DEALERSHIP FOR AN UNRELATED SERVICE AND NOTICED THAT MY CAR WAS HAVING TROUBLE GOING- IT FELT LABORED. INITIALLY I THOUGHT IT WAS COLD OR SOMETHING BUT SOON REALIZED THERE WAS A SERIOUS PROBLEM. I TURNED AROUND AND DROVE BACK TO THE DEALER (1-2 MILES ROUND TRIP). WHEN I STOPPED THE CAR IT SMOKED. MY SERVICE PERSON SAYS ITS A POTENTIAL PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKE SYSTEM AND WITH THE HCU. BASICALLY MY FRONT BRAKES LOCKED UP WHILE I WAS DRIVING. NO WARNING LIGHTS WERE ON. MY CAR IS STILL IN THE SHOP BECAUSE THE PARTS NEEDED TO ULTIMATELY FIX AND DIAGNOSE ARE ON BACKORDER UNTIL MID FEB. REPLACED"--WE ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE DEALERSHIP WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND TO FIX OUR PROBLEM BUT ARE VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS ISSUE WE FOUND ON THE INTERNET--IT IS POTENTIALLY A DANGEROUS PROBLEM AND, HAD I BEEN ON A FREEWAY OR IN HEAVY TRAFFIC, WOULD HAVE POSSIBLY CAUSED INJURY TO MYSELF OR CAR DAMAGE. *TR

THE VEHICLE STALLED UNABLE TO BE ACCELERATED, THE WRENCH SIGN APPEARED AND ALL I COULD DO WAS COAST IT TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING. SINCE THIS HAPPENED BEFORE, I TOOK IT IMMEDIATELY TO FORD TO HAVE IT FIX. I TOLD THEM WHAT I THOUGHT IT WAS AND THEY CONFIRMED IT. THE REPAIRED WAS $304. SINCE FORD KNOWS ABOUT THIS EXISTING PROBLEM WITH THE ESCAPES, THEY SHOULD HAVE RECALLED THIS PART AND PAY YOU FOR THE REPAIR. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION WHERE THEY STATED THAT THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 87,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
WHILE TRAVELING ON A BUSY INTERSTATE, THE ACCELERATOR SUDDENLY STOPPED RESPONDING WITHOUT ANY WARNING. THE GAS PEDAL DID NOT WORK AND THE VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY STARTED SLOWING DOWN AT AN ALARMING RATE. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DISPLAYED FOR THE FIRST TIME DURING THIS AUTOMATIC SHUTDOWN. LUCKILY WE WERE ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE OVER TO THE SHOULDER OF THE HIGHWAY WITHOUT AN ACCIDENT. THERE WERE NO SYMPTOMS OR WARNINGS BEFORE THE VEHICLE DANGEROUSLY SHUT DOWN SUDDENLY. THIS SAME ISSUE HAS RANDOMLY HAPPENED 5-6 MORE TIMES THE PAST FEW MONTHS. WE PULL THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND TURN IT OFF EACH TIME. AFTER WAITING A FEW MINUTES, WE START THE VEHICLE, ENGINE LIGHT GOES OFF AND SO FAR HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GET TO OUR DESTINATION. THE MOST RECENT INCIDENT HAPPENED A FEW DAYS AGO AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT REMAINED ON AFTER RESTARTING THE VEHICLE. WE JUST HAD THE VEHICLE CHECKED FOR ERROR CODES AND IT SHOWS P2112 THROTTLE ACTUATOR STUCK CLOSED. *TR

LIGHT TURNED GREEN, I ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE TO FREEWAY SPEED, VEHICLE ONLY OBTAINED ABOUT 2MPH, VEHICLE WAS RUNNING BUT HAD NO RESPONSE TO GAS PEDAL ( RPM'S DIDN'T INCREASE), TWO RED WARNING LIGHTS APPEARED ON DASH. I MANAGED TO COAST ONTO THE MINI SHOULDER OF THE ONRAMP, STICKING HALFWAY INTO TRAFFIC, DUE TO THE SMALL SIZE OF THE SHOULDER. I SHIFTED THROUGH PARK, NEUTRAL, DRIVE, NO RESPONSE, TURNED VEHICLE OFF, THEN RESTATED AND VEHICLE OPERATED NORMALLY, WARNING LIGHTS OUT. VERY, VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION AND CAR ONLY HAS 40,000 MILES. IN RESEARCHING THIS ONLINE, THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF SIMILAR EXPERIENCES WITH ALL MILEAGES, FORUMS ARE SAYING THE DEALER IS REPLACING DEFECTIVE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLIES. THERE WAS A RECALL FOR SAME MODEL BUT WHEN I CALLED FORD THEY SAID IT WAS NOT MADE IN LOCATION WHERE THE RECALL HAPPENED. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO A FEW AUTO REPAIRS SHOW AND THEY HAVE TOLD ME THAT THIS A PROBLEM THEY SEE A LOT. I HAVE CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAY THEY CAN NOT DO ANYTHING. WHILE DRIVING IN THE LEFT LANE OF A 3 LANE INTERSTATE, MY 2010 FORD ESCAPE LOST ALL ACCELERATION AND I HAD TO CAREFULLY MANEUVER TO THE RIGHT SHOULDER. AS I WAS LOSING ACCELERATION, I NEARLY CAUSED SEVERAL ACCIDENTS AS I COULDN'T SPEED UP AS NEEDED. WHEN I FINALLY MADE IT TO A COMPLETE STOP, THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO RUN WITH THE WRENCH LIGHT ON BUT I COULD NOT MOVE. I TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE, WAITED ABOUT A MINUTE AND WAS THEN ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE TO RETURN HOME. SINCE I THOUGHT IT WAS A ONE-TIME INCIDENT, I ONLY MENTIONED IT DURING AN OIL CHANGE AND NOTHING WAS DONE. THEN IT BECAME A FREQUENT OCCURRENCE, LIMITING MY COMFORT IN DRIVING ANYWHERE BEYOND 10 MILES. WHEN I CALLED THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT OF THE LOCAL FORD DEALER, THEY WERE ABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM OVER THE PHONE, WITHOUT NEEDING ME TO BRING IT IN. UPON ARRIVAL AT DEALERSHIP, THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDED WAS ON NATIONAL BACK ORDER. *TR
