NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2010 Ford Escape. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Power steering failed and information panel shows 'POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT'. There was a prior recall 14S05 from Ford which was completed (software reflash) by previous owner. We purchased the vehicle in November, 2017, with the mileage at 71,000 and the current mileage is 117,000 The steering wheel vibrated off and on without any errors shown beginning about 85,000 miles. I have not taken the vehicle to a dealer yet.
I drove to a shopping center, parked the car and went to do some shopping. When I was done, started the car and attempted to pull out from the parkin place. The steering system was almost unmovable. Using extreme force, was able to crack it a little bit while slowly moving back; however realize i could not possibly drive the car at that kind of effort to steer. Pulled back into the parking slot, an proceeded to attempt to re start the car. by the 3rd attempt, the power steering worked normally; I tried moving the steering both directions, and after verifying that it was working apparently normal, decided to drive slowly back home. I parked the car and have not used it for almost a week, I have been trying to find if there were any recalls on this unnerving kind of failure. The steering system.
I had no warning when I lost control of the vehicle as the power steering just stopped working. Managed to get home and park it. Message on the dash says POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT
Power Steering failed while driving at approximately 50 miles per hour. The power steering assist light came on, I was able to pull the vehicle over but it was quite difficult. Checked for power steering fluid and this vehicle is not equipped with it, all seems to be electronic. What I didn't realize at that time was when the power steering goes your all wheel drive goes which makes it twice the hazard in the winter. I am thankful the roads were not icy as I probably would have crashed. There seem to be many recalls for this particular issue but not on my vehicle VIN.....why is that? Do I need a dealer to give me a failure report? Will Ford fix this? I await your reply, thank you for your time.
Noticed the steering on my 2010 Ford Escape would oscillate back and forth approximately 1/4" when in park. I made an appointment with the local ford dealer to have it inspected. In my own research I discovered Recalls: NHTSA 14V284000 FORD 14S05. But my VIN was not listed for the recall and I have owned the vehicle since new. Dealer reported that the steering column needed to be replaced but parts are backordered and it would be safe to drive until then. The next day, driving down the road the power steering failed with code B2278. The recall explains that only the torque sensor needs to be replaced, not the entire steering column. This is a safety issue and should be covered under the recall.
As everyone is aware, Ford had a recall on 2010 escape, Recall # 14S05 - Electronic Power Steering that I took in to Ford 9-20-2016, recently the power steering Failed, and I am Thankful no one was on a road driving with a hard turn, then losing power steering that could possibly hurt or killed someone, my daughter usually drives this car with my grandson whose 22 months old, if the outcome would have been a fatality of one or both my daughter, and grandson, I would without a doubt have hired an attorney. I am shocked NHTSA is not pursuing this any longer, I hope you change your position, and make ford replace the torque sensor, that its not a matter of if it goes out, but when. My understanding is there are about 1,000,000 cars possibly more, with this issue, if the cost to repair were 500.00 a car for parts and labor, that would be a cost to Ford Motor Co. 1/2 BILLION DOLLERS or more, I hope its not money talking.
The contact owns a 2010 Ford Escape. The contact stated while parking the vehicle, the power steering fault warning light was illuminated. The contact stated when she returned to start the vehicle, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The vehicle was not drivable. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. A dealer was not contacted. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V284000 (Steering) however, the VIN was not included. The contact attempted to call the manufacturer but was unable to speak to a representative. The failure mileage was approximately 67,500.
After a few minutes of driving, the power steering assist began to fail. First, the "power steering assist fault" notification/error appeared in my message center, and steering became difficult, but the error disappeared after a few seconds and I was then able to steer easily. I parked my car and turned it off. When I turned the car on again about three minutes later, the "power steering assist fault" message appeared at startup and did not disappear. The power steering has not worked since. The error code "power steering assist fault" signifies that the power steering control module cannot determine the driver's steering input. Because the electric power steering system cannot determine what direction the driver is steering, the EPS shuts down. This exact error was the cause of a recall that began May 27, 2014 (see NHTSA campaign # 14V284000) (see also Ford recall # 14S05). The recall states that "vehicles potentially affected are certain 2008-2011 model year Fold Escape & Mercury Mariner vehicles built at the Kansas City Assembly Plant from August 18, 2006, to September 11, 2010." My vehicle meets all of these criteria; my vehicle also has experienced the specific error mentioned in the recall documents. I noticed no other errors or malfunctions with the vehicle at the time. The vehicle is available for inspection as needed. The error has been examined by an individual with knowledge of vehicle error codes and repair. The first EPS system fault occurred while I was actively driving. If the EPS had not briefly restored itself, I would have been stuck in an intersection and blocked the entrance to a large parking lot. Additionally, I had just pulled off of a highway; if the EPS had faulted a minute earlier, I would have been unable to leave the highway and would have been in a more perilous situation.
My power steering went out on a Sunday while I was miles away from my home. No warning lights or messages came on the dashboard. I did have very limited steering and I was able to get it home. There were recalls by Ford for this particular problem in the year it was made, 2010. My vin # didn't come up for needing a recall. I'm going to take it to a garage to be repaired and I'd like to know what the faulty part is.
The vehicle started making occasional "clunking" sounds upon right hand turns around the 120,000 mile mark as if my tire were falling into a pothole that wasn't there. Had one occurrence where a sharp right hand turn resulted into what I'd call a "locked up" steer or loss of steering control and flashing warning light. It then mysteriously resumed normalcy. At 135,000 during a brake job service, mechanic pointed out that the crossmember has prematurely corroded through along with concerns about the subframe and this car was unfit to drive which may be the reason for the above. I'm reading very similar stories of all the same symptoms that have already resulted in accidents with this car which is forcing me to park this.
The contact owns a 2010 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving 50 MPH, the power steering failed, and the contact could not turn the steering wheel. The power steering assist fault warning light was illuminated. The contact pulled over and began driving at slower speeds while manually steering the vehicle. The vehicle was diagnosed by an independent mechanic with power steering failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.
The power steering cuts out abruptly causing loss of control. The dashboard begins to flash with warning lights and sounds, however when the power steering comes back on the warning lights and sounds stop. This is a known issue by Ford but the dealer tells me my car is not on the recall list, the existing recall #14S05 does not cover my vehicle and furthermore it let Ford off the hook w/o truly fixing the problem. If you look into it you will find that the "repair" does not work! The NHTSA needs to do something about this as it will cause accidents and possibly lead to injury or death! Please - get serious about holding Ford accountable. This is a SERIOUS problem.
The contact owns a 2010 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving approximately 35 MPH, the vehicle started shaking abnormally. The contact stated she was safely able to slow the vehicle to approximately 10 MPH and proceed back to her residence. The contact stated that on her way to the residence she noticed that the power steering warning light illuminated, and the steering wheel was difficult to turn. The contact called an independent mechanic and informed the mechanic of the failure. The contact was notified of NHTSA Campaign Number: 15E045000 (Suspension) and 14V284000 (Steering). The local dealer was contacted but the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in the recalls and that the repair would be an out-of-pocket expense. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 140,000.
The contact owns a 2010 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while attempting to refuel the vehicle, the fuel filler door would not open and the contact attempted to use a screwdriver to open the fuel filler door. The contact was not able to refuel the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the dealer performed the recall repair for NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V777000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). However, the dealer did not have time to repair the fuel filler door. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 119,000.
The contact owns a 2010 Ford Escape. The contact stated that the sub-frame had extensive rust above the wheels. The contact was unable to pass the PA vehicle inspection. The contact called the local dealer however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to NHTSA for assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 149,500.
1.2010 Ford Escape Electronic Throttle Body issue investigated by the NHTSA. 2. Hesitations, surges, stalls. Ford has issued a CSP 13N03 with time and mileage limits. This is a safety issue effecting many Ford vehicles and the symptoms may not surface until beyond the CSP 13N03 time limits imposed by Ford, as in my case. These electronic throttle body hesitations, surges and stalls are very dangerous and result in compromised safety for the driver, their passengers and others on the road. I have come very close to a collision on two separate occasions because of this issue. The NHTSA should force Ford to reclassify this issue as a recall with no time nor mileage limits or lift the current program time and mileage limits for people like me who are beyond the time limit who have just recently developed this problem. This is a mechanical defect as well as a safety issue. 3. Problem confirmed by Ford dealership. 4. Dash warnings - check engine light and wrench lights illuminated. In my case, these have gone on and off, vehicle demonstrates hesitations, surges, stalls, then resets itself and the vehicle functions normally. This has happened twice over the last few months. Just recently, the warning lights have stayed illuminated and the symptoms are now constant.
The contact owns a 2010 Ford Escape. The contact stated while his fiancé was driving 55 MPH, the vehicle drove over a bump in the middle of the roadway and the steering wheel turned to the left causing the wheels to make a squealing sound. The contact stated that the steering wheel remained off center. The driver had the vehicle towed to his residence. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact was concerned that the failure was related to the front wheel being misaligned. The manufacture was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
The airbag on the driver's side did not deploy when the vehicle was hit from behind. -It is available for inspection -I was injured -I have not had the airbag inspected by a dealer, but did have the car repaired at an auto collision repair shop -The vehicle has not been inspected by police, insurance rep or dealer, but did have an annual inspection by an auto shop before the failure -There were no warning messages prior to the failure

The contact owns a 2010 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the steering wheel locked up. The power steering assist fault message was displayed. The contact called the local dealer, but vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated the failure was like NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V284000 (Steering). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
I was driving turning right and my steering wheel locked up and I hit a tree I seen my model car has a recall #14s05
The subframe is rotted out on the right passenger side which could cause the wheel to fall off while in transit. This is a known problem for the Ford escapes that has not been recalled by Ford. This vehicle is only 11 years old.
Loss of. Power steering while running. And dash. Markers turn off in the highway
I have researched ford escape recalls. Each recall I have seen such as epas retention guide the bearing and fuel system is exactly what's wrong with my vehicle now. However when I look up the recall by Vin number I am only shown that I have a recall for the fuel system problem
My power steering went out after I got my car. My starter doesn’t work I have to use a button on my keys to always start my car the key will not start my car. It’s very hard to turn my car and it went out while I was making a turn and myself siblings and boyfriend almost got hit by an oncoming car. The car has not been inspected, I can have my car looked at most likely upon request unless I have work but I can come in the next available day. There were no messages or warnings to my car or any symptoms before they went out.
Electronic steering assist is intermittently failing causing loss of power steering. Other vehicles of this model and year have been recalled for this failure. My Vin is not included in this recall. Warning light notification comes comes on dash. Power steering is lost. Also steering wheel vibrates when stopped at a traffic light.
The contact owns a 2010 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving 30 mph while attempting to make a left turn, the steering wheel turned right inadvertently then ceased. The contact slammed on the brake pedal to stop the vehicle from going into a ditch. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and diagnosed that the steering shaft torque sensor malfunctioned and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer since parts were on back order. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in a recall. The failure mileage was 118,000.
FORD RECALL OF POWER STEERING RESET THE COMPUTER. POWER STEERING STILL FAILED REQUIRING THE SENSOR THAT WAS NOT REPLACED TO BE REPLACED. THE PROBLEM PRESENTED WITH THE SAME ERROR CODES AND SYMPTOMS THAT CAUSED THE RECALL. FORD SAID THAT THE RECALL WAS ALREADY COMPLETED. AT THE TIME THEY FLASHED THE MEMORY ON THE DEVICE INSTEAD OF REPLACING.
WHILE DRIVING MADE RIGHT HAND TURN INTO SERVICE STATION AND LOST CONTROL OF VEHICLE. FORTUNATELY HAD SLOWED FOR TURN AND ALTHOUGH SCARED NO ONE WAS HURT WHEN TOW COMPANY JACKED UP ESCAPE TO TOW IT ONTO FLATBED TRUCK WE SAW THAT FORWARD FRAME HAD RUSTED ALLOWING FRONT OF A ARM TO SEPARATE FROM FRAME CAUSING SUSPENSION TO SEPARATE FROM VEHICLE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE AT A STANDSTILL, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME DIFFICULT TO TURN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE POWER STEERING ASSIST WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO LOCAL DEALER, AND WAS NOT REPAIRED. UPON INVESTIGATION, THE CONTACT ASSOCIATED THE FAILURE WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V284000 (STEERING) HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 160,000.
THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY - THE LIFT GATE TRAPS WATER INSIDE AND HAS CAUSED THE LIFT GATE TO RUST OUT SO BADLY THAT IT HAS CAUSED ME TO REPLACE THE LIFT GATE LATCH ACTUATOR MOTOR AND ASSEMBLY ON THE LIFT GATE 5 TIMES SINCE I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE IN MAY 2010. MY SERVICE DOG HAS GOTTEN STUCK IN THE VEHICLE DUE TO THE LIFT GATE MOTOR BECOMING BROKEN. I WAS UNABLE TO OPEN THE LIFTGATE AND HAD TO TAKE DOWN THE SEATS. IN THE EVENT THIS WAS AN EMERGENCY MY SERVICE ANIMAL WOULD'VE DIED. MY SERVICE ANIMAL IS TOO LARGE TO RIDE UP FRONT AND SHE RIDES IN THE BACK. ON OCCASION WHEN MY LIFT GATE WAS NOT WORKING, I HAD TO RENT A VEHICLE. IN ORDER TO FIX THE RECENT ISSUE WITH THE GATE, THE SHOP THAT I TOOK MY CAR TO HAD TO PRY OPEN THE GATE AND REPLACE THE MOTOR ASSEMBLY. THIS ISSUE WILL CONTINUE UNTIL THE LIFT GATE IS REPLACED AND NO LONGER HOLDS WATER. THIS IS A COMMON SAFETY ISSUE WITH THE FORD ESCAPES. ADDITIONALLY, THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE DOOR ALSO HOLDS A LOT OF WATER. THE MILEAGE INDICATED IS FOR THE MOST RECENT REPAIR, BUT IT HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES PRIOR TO THIS DATE.
The contact owns a 2010 Ford Escape. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V284000 (Steering). The vehicle was taken to the local dealer and was inspected, and the software update was performed. The contact stated that several months later after stopping at a stop sign and then attempting to accelerate, the vehicle lost power steering functionality. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact manually drove the vehicle without power steering to the residence. The local dealer was contacted and informed of the failure. The dealer informed the contact that the recall repair was previously performed and offered no further assistance. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
WHEN I STARTED VEHICLE STEERING WHEEL STARTED TO SHAKE A LITTLE BIT ON ITS OWN, THEN I TRY TO LEAVE PARKING SPACE AND STEERING WAS REALLY HARD TO MOVE. I TRIED TO DRIVE LIKE THIS BUT IT IS REALLY HARD TO STEER VEHICLE ON THIS CONDITIONS TRYING TO DRIVE ON TRAFFIC HAS BECOME DANGEROUS DUE TO THE LACK OF STEERING, I OPTED TO STOP DRIVING THIS CAR UNTIL I CAN TAKE IT TO THE SHOP.
REAR SUBFRAME IS RUSTED, POTENTIALLY CRACKED CAUSING NOISE AND LOSS OF NORMAL CONTROL WHEN DRIVING.
WHILE DRIVING THE 2010 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID THE POWER STEERING ASSIST MALFUNCTIONED CAUSING THE STEERING TO SUDDENLY BECOME VERY DIFFICULT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE POWER STEERING WAS FIRM WITH THE POWER STEERING ASSIST WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT EXCESSIVE FORCE WAS NEEDED TO STEER THE VEHICLE. UPON INVESTIGATION, THE CONTACT LINKED THE FAILURE TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V284000 (STEERING) HOWEVER, UPON CONTACTING METRO FORD, INC. (2860 S NOLAND RD, INDEPENDENCE, MO 64055) HE WAS INFORMED THAT HIS VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 103,000.*DT
@12:56PM ON 2/11/2021, MY CAR SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT WARNING LOST ALL ELECTRICAL POWER, ACCELERATION, LIGHTS, PEDAL/GAS COMPLETELY UNRESPONSIVE. THE TIME REMAINED ON. IT WAS 19* F WITH NO PRECIPITATION ON DRY/PARTLY SNOWY PAVEMENT ON HIGHWAY US31 JUST S OF THE NORTH MUSKEGON/BUSINESS 31 BYPASS. I WAS GOING ABOUT 75 MPH AND ADJUSTED THE CRUISE CONTROL TO SLOW FOR ANOTHER VEHICLE SHORTLY BEFORE THE SHUTOFF. IT IS NOT CLEAR IF THAT IS RELATED, BECAUSE THE TIMING WAS NOT IMMEDIATE. I HAD NOT CHANGED LANES IN MORE THAN A MILE, ALTHOUGH THE ROAD DOES TWIST SLIGHTLY IN THAT LOCATION. I HAD ON AUTOMATIC LIGHTS, DEFROST AND REAR DEFROST, BLUETOOTH AUDIO, AND CRUISE CONTROL. MY TANK WAS JUST BELOW 1/2 FULL OF GAS AND THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN MAINTAINED BUT IS NOT STORED IN A GARAGE OVERNIGHT. I COASTED TO AN EMERGENCY LANE ON THE PASSING LANE, TURNED THE KEY OFF (OTHER THAN THE TIME, AUDIO, AND BRAKES, NOTHING ELSE WOULD RESPOND.) I STARTED THE CAR AGAIN AFTER ABOUT 60 SECONDS, IT STARTED WITHOUT PROBLEM, AND I COULD CONTINUE TO MY VACCINE APPOINTMENT WITH NO DISCERNIBLE SIGNS OF ANY OTHER ISSUE OR ERROR. IT WAS TERRIFYING.
POWER STEERING WENT OUT. UNABLE TO TURN OR CONTROL VEHICLE
I WAS COMING BACK FROM THE STORE. I STARTED MY CAR UP IT WAS STATIONARY, THEN THE POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT POPPED UP. AND THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED I HAD TO DRIVE 30 MINUTES HOME WITH MY VEHICLE IN THIS CIRCUMSTANCE.
BATTERY CONSTANTLY DIES IF LEFT UNUSED FOR MORE THAN 2-3 DAYS. NOTHING IS EVER LEFT ON, NO RADIO, NO LIGHTS, NOTHING BUT SOMETHING KEEPS DRAINING THE BATTERY
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN FOR SERVICE AT AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR AN OIL CHANGE, THE TECHNICIAN NOTICED THAT THE ENGINE CHASSIS WAS EXTREMELY CORRODED AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. THE VEHICLE WAS LATER TAKEN TO MOYER FORD SALES INC. (10111 AL-59, FOLEY, AL 36535) WHERE THE DEALER CONFIRMED THE DIAGNOSED FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND PROVIDED A CASE NUMBER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 65,000.
STEERING;AT SLOW SPEEDS AND ESPECIALLY AT IDLE THE STEERING WHEEL JUMPS BACK AND FORTH. JITTERY IS HOW I'D DESCRIBE IT. AT SLOW SPEEDS IT FEELS LIKE A LOOSE WHEEL WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL SHAKES. THROTTLE BODY; RECALL IS EXPIRED. I PURCHASED THE CAR (SECOND OWNER) ABOUT 2015 FROM A DEALERSHIP IN ORANGE COUNTY, CA. I NEVER RECEIVED ANY COMMUNICATION FROM FORD ABOUT THIS ISSUE. OEM THROTTLE BODY FAILED IN 2019, WHICH WAS INDEPENDENTLY DIAGNOSED AND I REPLACED THE DEFECTIVE COMPONENT. NO RECOURSE AT THE PRESENT WITH EITHER ISSUE. BOTH ARE SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUES KNOWN THROUGHOUT FORD FORUMS AND INCLUDING THE MANUFACTURER.
ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) AND ANTILOCK BRAKING SYSTEM(ABS) DISPLAY ON THE DASHBOARD: WHEN BRAKING AT A STOP THE BREAK SKIPS AND STRUGGLES TO BREAK. WHEN TURNING WHILE THE FOOT IS ON THE BREAK IT ALSO SKIPS. WARNING LIGHTS ON DASH PERIODICAL TURNS ON AND OFF. THE BREAK SKIPPING DOES NOT ALWAYS OCCUR. FAST BREAKING CAN TRIGGER SKIPPING OF THE BREAKS. RAIN ALSO INCREASES THE LIKELINESS OF BREAK SKIPPING AND ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) MAKING IT HARD TO CONTROL STEERING. THE BRAKE PAD AND ROTORS HAVE BEEN CHECKS AND ARE NORMAL. FORD ESCAPE 2010. INSTANCES HAVE BEEN HAPPENING AT RANDOM SINCE 2018 AT A FREQUENCY OF 3-4 TIMES A WEEK.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL BEGAN TO SHAKE AND THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME DIFFICULT TO TURN. THE CONTACT STATED NO WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO LOCAL DEALER (PRIORITY FORD 3420 N MILITARY HWY, NORFOLK, VA 23518 (757) 583-3673) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED WITH NEEDING POWER STEERING TORQUE SENSOR TO BE REPLACED. UPON INVESTIGATION, THE CONTACT ASSOCIATED THE FAILURE WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V284000 (STEERING) HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED AS OF YET. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 130,000.
POWER STEERING STOPPED ON CAR. TURNED CAR ON IN THE MORNING AND GOT A MESSAGE "POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT" ON DASH. WENT TO DRIVE CAR AND POWER STEERING WAS NOT WORKING.
THE CAR HAS HAD ISSUES STARTING SINCE I BROUGHT IT FROM A USED DEALER LAST SEPTEMBER. OVER TIME IT GOT MORE DIFFICULT TO CRANK. I STARTED CHECKING YOUTUBE TO SEE IF IT WERE JUST ME AND CAME TO LEARN THAT THERE IS A GREAT MULTITUDE OF OTHERS HAVING THE SAME ISSUE WITH THEIR FORD ESCAPES. THE LOCKING MECHANISM FROM THE KEY THAT FLIPS THE IGNITION SWITCH IS EITHER TOO WEEK OR IT DOESN'T TURN FAR ENOUGH FOR THE VEHICLE TO CRANK. I HAVE HAD TO REMOVE THE COVERING FROM MY STEERING WHEEL AND MANUALLY USE THE SPARE KEY AS AN EXTENSION OF THE O E INSIDE THE IGNITION, IN ORDER FOR THE VEHICLE TO CRANK. THE SAME PROCESS IS REQUIRED IN TURNING THE CAR OFF. RIGHT NOW IT WORKS, HOWEVER COULD BE A HAZARD WITH ALL OF THE WIRING IN THE STEERING WHEEL EXPOSED. AND WHO IS TO SAY THAT ONE DAY THE VEHICLE WON'T JUST SHUT OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY WITH THE KEY AND IGNITION SWITCH HAVING AN IMAGINARY PHYSICAL CONNECTION?
The contact owns a 2010 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle made an abnormal sound. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for an alignment, but the mechanic was unable to perform the alignment due to a hole in the subframe. The contact was informed that the subframe had corroded. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.
I DROVE A SHORT DISTANCE TO A NEARBY PARK, PARKED THE VEHICLE, TOOK MY DOG OUT OF THE BACK, AND CLOSED THE THE REAR LIFTGATE/HATCHBACK IN A NORMAL FASHION. WE WERE JUST WALKING AWAY FROM THE CAR WHEN THE REAR WINDOW EXPLODED. IT WAS A LOUD EXPLOSION WITH FLYING GLASS. THE WHOLE WINDOW BLEW OUT. IT WAS SO EXTREME THAT OTHER PEOPLE IN THE PARKING LOT JUMPED OUT OF THEIR CARS IN ALARM AND CAME OVER TO SEE WHAT HAD HAPPENED. NOTHING HAD HIT THE WINDOW. NOTHING WAS TOUCHING THE WINDOW. THE TEMPERATURE WAS NOT EXTREME--COOL AND DAMP BUT NOT COLD. THERE WAS NO APPARENT CAUSE FOR THIS AND IT WAS VERY DANGEROUS BECAUSE OF THE FLYING GLASS. IF IT HAD HAPPENED SECONDS EARLIER I COULD HAVE BEEN INJURED OR MY PET COULD HAVE BEEN INJURED, OR BOTH. I NOTE THAT I HAD PUSHED THE REAR DEFROST BUTTON WHILE DRIVING TO CLEAR UP SOME FOGGING BECAUSE THE WEATHER WAS DAMP AND THE BIG DOG WAS BACK THERE, BUT THAT WAS NORMAL USE.
POWER STEERING SUDDENLY STOPPED WORKING WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY.
THIS VECHICAL IS BEING FINANCED THROUGH CENTRAL AUTO SALES OF HOT SPRINGS, ARKANSAS. THIS VECHICAL HAS SERIOUS ISSUES, I CONTACTED CENTRAL AUTO ABOUT MY CAR NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. IT KEPT STALLING ON FREEWAY THAT I WAS BARELY MISSED BY A DIESAL TRUCK HITTING ME. I TOLD THEM IT WAS THE THROTTLE BODY CONTROL POWER TRAIN THAT'S KEEP STALLING. THEY PICKED THE CAR UP KEPT IT FOR 2DAYS DIDN'T FIX IT BUT WANTED TO CHARGE ME $344 FOR REPAIRS THAT WASN'T DONE. GOT CAR BACK IN SAME POSITION AND IT STALLED AGAIN ON ME IN MIDDLE OF FREEWAY ALMOST CAUSING A CRASH. I HAD TO BUY MY PART AND HAD SOMEONE TO PUT THE THROTTLE BODY ON. NOW IT'S THE STEERING WHEEL IT WON'T TURN PROPERLY IT'S SO HARD TO TURN LIKE IT'S LOCK CAUSE IT MAKE A CLICKING SOUND BEFORE IT COMPLETELY LOCK. I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP AND TOLD THEM WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS AND THEY SENT ME A TEXT TOLD ME TO DO WHATEVER I WANT. THIS VECHICAL IS A HAZARD TO DRIVE. BUT THEY WANT $210 CAR NOTE PAYMENT FOR A NON FUNCTIONING CAR. I ASKED COULD I TRADE IT BACK IN TO THEM GOT NO REPLY ONLY ABOUT A CAR PAYMENT WHICH I NEVER MISSED A PAYMENT. AND IT ALSO RAINS IN THE CAR YOU CAN HERE THE WATER IN THE DOORS AND THE FLOOR BE SOAKED.
