VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN MY GARAGE. I WAS IN THE GARAGE AT THE TIME. BEGAN SMELLING BURNING ELECTRICAL SMELL. FOUND WHITE SMOKE COMING OUT OF ENGINE COMPARTMENT, INCREASING DRAMATICALLY IN VOLUME. IN JUST A FEW MOMENTS, THE SMOKE WAS A SOLID CURTAIN COMING FROM THE GAP BETWEEN THE HOOD AND DRIVER SIDE FRONT FENDER. OPENED HOOD AND FOUND AN ELECTRICAL SWITCH ON THE BRAKE SYSTEM MASTER CYLINDER CREATING THE SMOKE. USING A RAG I PULLED THE SWITCH AWAY FROM THE CYLINDER AND IT WAS MELTED IN HALF. THE PART OF THE SWITCH CONNECTED TO THE ELECTRICAL WIRE CONTINUED TO SMOKE. I DISCONNECTED THE REMAINING PIECE OF THE SWITCH FROM THE WIRE AND IT STOPPED SMOKING BUT EVERYTHING WAS HOT.
LOUISE SUDDUTH HAD DRIVEN HER 2000 FORD EXCURSION TO SUDDUTH FARMS IN MAYO, S.C. SHE HAD PARKED THE VEHICLE, AND THE VEHICLE CAUGHT FIRE WHILE IT WAS NOT RUNNING. MRS. SUDDUTH RECEIVED SERIOUS AND ULTIMATELY FATAL BURNS. *JB
2000 FORD EXCURSION HAD CRACKS IN THE SIDEWALLS OF ALL FOUR TIRES. *KB THE CRACKS WERE 2-3 INCHES LONG AND IN MULTIPLE SPOTS ON ALL FOUR TIRES. *NM
DT: THE CONSUMER STATES THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL ON HIS VEHICLE CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO CATCH FIRE. THIS OCCURRED ON JUNE 28, 2005. THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY FOR APPROXIMATELY TWO HOURS. THE CONSUMER WAS MOWING HIS LAWN AND NOTICED THE SMOKE COMING FROM THE ENGINE AND WAS ABLE TO PUT IT OUT. HE THEN DROVE IT TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD IT WAS BECAUSE OF THE CRUISE CONTROL. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD HIM TO CALL THE MANUFACTURER AND THEY TOLD HIM THERE IS NOT A RECALL AND THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. JUST THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS DAMAGED. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT DID NOT RESPOND. *NM
DT: THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH KNOB BROKE AND SEPARATED FROM THE SWITCH. CONSUMER MATCHED THE RECALL CAMPAIGN THAT WAS ALREADY IN EFFECT, BUT IT DOES NOT COVER THE OWNERS VEHICLE ALTHOUGH THE PROBLEMS WERE EXACTLY THE SAME. THERE WERE NO PROBLEMS OR WARNINGS BEFORE THE KNOB BROKE.*AK *SB
CAM POSITION SENSOR ON FORD EXCURSION POWER STROKE DIESEL HAS GONE OUT TWICE. THE FIRST TIME AT 50,000 MILES, WHILE PULLING A BOAT ON A BUSY HIGHWAY. LUCKILY WE WERE ABLE TO PULL OVER, AS THE VEHICLE DIED. THE SECOND TIME IT WENT WAS RIGHT AT 100,000. *JB
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THAT ALL FOUR OF THE TIRE SIDEWALLS ARE SPLITTING. THE TIRES ARE THE ORIGINAL TIRES THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED WITH. THE TIRES PRESSURE HAS BEEN KEPT AT THE RECOMMENDED LEVELS. THE TIRES WERE REGULARLY SERVICED, ROTATED AND HAD THE PRESSURE CHECKED ON THEM. THERE HAS BEEN NO VIBRATION WHILE DRIVING AND NO ABNORMAL BULGING. THE CONTACT HAS PICTURES OF SIDE WALL SPLITTING AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE FIRESTONE COMPANY CONTACTED THE CONSUMER AND INFORMED HIM THAT THE PROBLEM WAS USUALLY CAUSED BY UNDER INFLATED OR OVER LOADED TIRES. THE REPRESENTATIVE ALSO STATED THAT FORD RECOMMEND PSI WAS 35. THE CONSUMER STATED HE HAS ALWAYS KEPT 65 PSI IN THE TIRES AS STAMPED ON THE SIDEWALL OF THE TIRES. IT WAS ALSO STATED THAT THE VEHICLE SHOULD HAVE LOAD E RANGE TIRES INSTEAD OF D LOAD RANGE. UPDATED 07/07/06. *JB
4 A.M. WE HEARD A LOUD NOISE. WOKE UP TO SEE WHAT IT WAS AND OUR 2000 FORD EXCURSION WAS IN FLAMES. AT THAT TIME THE FIRE WAS CONSENTRATED UNDER THE HOOD ON LEFT SIDE.THE LEFT TIRE WAS ALREADY IN FLAMES. VEHICLE WAS TOTALLY DESTROYED BY THE TIME THE FIRE DEPATMENT ARRIVED TO PUT IT OUT. WHICH TOOK ABOUT 10-15 MINUTES. THE ONLY PROBLEMS WE HAD WAS THE CRUISE CONTROL HAD RECENTLY QUIT WORKING.
PARK BRAKE ASSEMBLY SPLIT IN 2, COMPLETE FAILURE OF PARK BRAKE AND UNIT FAILURE. WHOLE UNIT MUST BE REPLACED, HARDLY EVER USED, SO IT SHOULD NOT HAVE FAILED

OUR 2000 FORD EXCURSION KEEPS HAVING THE SPARK PLUGS SHOOT OUT OF THEIR HOLES DAMAGING THE HEAD AND INDIVIDUAL SPARK PLUG COILS (3 REPLACED SO FAR). WE HAVE SPENT NEARLY $500 REPAIRING THE HEADS/COILS SO FAR. I EXPECT ADDITIONAL PLUGS TO FAIL ON THE V-10 ENGINE. I AM AFRAID OF CONTINUED HEAD AND COIL DAMAGE AND EVEN FUEL LINE DAMAGE LEADING TO AN ENGINE FIRE AND TOTAL VEHICLE LOSS. I WANT FORD TO RECALL THE VEHICLE AND REPLACE THE HEADS WITH NEW HEADS WITH A BETTER SPARK PLUG HOLE DESIGN. *JB
HEAD LIGHT SWITCH KNOB FRACTURE AT DASH BOARD CONNECTION. HEADLIGHT SWITCH KNOB FELL OFF. UNABLE TO TURN HEADLIGHTS ON - SAFETY ISSUE. OTHER NHTSA THAT HAS SAME ISSUE WITH SAME YR AND MODEL 01V075000. FORD SAYS NOT ACCORDING TO MY VIN.
DT: THE OIL PAN RUSTED AND THE CONSUMER HAD IT REPLACED. THIS WAS IN A 2000 FORD EXCURSION. THERE WERE NEVER ANY PROBLEMS BEFORE. THE CONSUMER NOTICED THAT OIL WAS LEAKING ON THE GROUND, AND THE VEHICLE WAS USING MORE OIL THAN USUAL. THE PRICE OF $892.00 AT FORD TO HAVE IT REPLACED. THIS COULD CAUSE TROUBLE ON THE ROAD FOR OTHERS BECAUSE IT COULD RESULT IN A WRECK WITH THESE CHEAP OIL PANS. *AK *SC *JB

VEHICLE'S FIRE POSSIBLY CAUSED BY THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH. *AK
TRAVELING ON INTERSTATE 75 IN FLORIDA WHEN THE TREAD SEPERATED FROM THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR TIRE ON MY 2000 EXCURSION. THIS CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO SKID ON THE HIGHWAY, BUT I WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL AND DID NOT CRASH. DAMAGED WAS CAUSED TO THE VEHICLE FROM THE TREAD HITTING THE SIDE AND REAR OF THE VEHICLE.
BUTTON WHICH TURNS ON HEADLIGHTS BROKE OFF OF SWITCH. I FOUND THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR 2000 EXCURSIONS FOR THIS PARTICULAR DEFECT BUT WHEN I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND LATER CALLED FORD THEY CLAIMED THAT MY VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THEY INSIST THAT I HAVE TO BUY THE $85 HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY JUST TO GET THE $5 KNOB. I AM CURRENTLY USING A PAIR OF NEEDLENOSE PLIERS TO TURN HEADLIGHTS ON AND OFF WHICH IS UNSAFE WHEN DRIVING.*AK
AFTER PARKING THE VEHICLE FOR 20 MINUTES, THEN, WHILE WALKING TO THE VEHICLE, THE CONSUMER SMELLED SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. THE HOOD WOULD NOT OPEN. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT RESPONDED, AND THE FIRE WAS PUT OUT. THERE WAS MINIMAL DAMAGE. *AK THE CRUISE CONTROL MODULE WAS THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE. PER THE INVOICE, THE WIRING GOING TO THE CRUISE CONTROL DE-ACTIVATION SWITCH CAUGHT FIRE. THE DEACTIVATION SWITCH AND HARNESS WAS REPLACED. *SC *JB
TRAVELING NORTH IN LIGHT RAIN ON IH 55 AT BROOKHAVEN, MS ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON, MARCH 20, 2005. I EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN FAILURE OF A FIRESTONE STEELTEX R4S RADIAL TIRE. LUCKILY IT WAS ON THE REAR OF MY 2000 FORD EXCURSION, AND I WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE SHOULDER QUICKLY AND SAFELY. THE TIRE TREAD HAD SEPARATED FROM THE PLY FOR ABOUT A THIRD OF THE WAY AROUND THE TIRE ON THE INSIDE. THE TIRE HAS 34,000 MILES ON IT. THIS SUDDEN FAILURE IN A SIMILAR MODE AS THE OTHER FIRESTONE FAILURES LEADS ME TO BELIEVE PERHAPS THEY SHOULD BE RECALLED ALSO. THIS TIRE IS AN ORIGINAL TIRE THAT WAS INSTALLED AT THE FACTORY, AND IS A LOAD RANGE D TIRE. MY EXCURSION IS A DIESEL MODEL.*AK
THE PAST SIX WEEKS MY SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT CAME ON. AFTER CHECKING ENGINE FLUIDS AND CHANGING FUEL FILTER THE LIGHT WOULD GO OUT. I HAVE ALSO NOTICED MY HEADLIGHTS GOING DIM QUITE FREQUENTLY. AFTER THIRD OCCURENCE, I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO INDEPENDENT SERVICE SHOP. AFTER CHECKING FOR TWO DAYS, THEY DETERMINED THAT THE MAIN WIRING HARNESS HAS AGAIN BEEN MELTED THROUGH. THIS WAS REPORTED TO YOU ON 2-17-2004 WHEN THE FIRST FIRE WAS DISCOVERED. CONFIRMATION NUMBER IS 10081075. YOU CAN CONTACT THIS SERVICE SHOP. THEY HAVE REPLACED THIS PART ON MANY FORDS. THEY HAD ONE VEHICLE WHICH BECAME FULLY ENGULFED IN FLAMES WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. DOES SOMEONE HAVE TO DIE BEFORE FORD IS REQUIRED TO RECALL THIS. THE WIRING HARNESS IS PLACED WHERE ENGINE FLUIDS FREQUENTLY DRIP ON WIRING HARNESS AND CAUSES IT TO MELT AND EVENTUALLY STARTING ON FIRE. I HAVE ANOTHER FORD WITH SAME ENGINE. I WOULD LIKE THIS FIXED BEFORE IT COSTS ME ANOTHER $2500 FOR THAT VEHICLE. THE REPAIR SHOP IS VALLEY DIESEL INJECTION LOCATED IN NEENAH, WI . PLEASE CALL THEM WITH QUESTIONS. FORD DEALERS WILL NOT TRUTHFULLY STATE THEY HAVE A PROBLEM. IF THERE IS NOT A PROBLEM WHY ARE THE WIRING HARNESSES NOT AVAILABLE. LAST TIME IT WAS A NATIONAL BACK ORDER.*AK
NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN 05V017000 CONCERNING CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH. VEHICLE WAS PARKED FOR APPROXIMATELY 6 HOURS IN THE CONSUMER'S DRIVEWAY. CONSUMER WAS IN HIS GARAGE WITH THE DOOR UP WHEN HE NETS RECALL CAMPAIGN HEARD A LOUD NOISE, AND THE FIRE CAME FROM THE VEHICLE. HE TRIED TO PUT OUT THE FLAMES, HOWEVER WAS UNABLE TO SO. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED AND EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE, HOWEVER, VEHICLE WAS TOTALED. *AK
THE REAR WINDSHIELD WIPER DOES NOT OPERATE DUE TO THE SPRING. ALSO, THE BRAKES DO NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY DUE TO THE BRAKE ROTORS. THE VEHICLE WILL NOT STOP ACCORDINGLY.*AK
VEHICLE FIRE. 2000 FORD EXCURSION. IN THE SAME WIRE/SWITCH AS THE RECALLED VEHICLES. I PARKED IN A MALL PARKING LOT, AND PREPARED TO WAIT A FEW MINUTES UNTIL THE STORE OPENED. I SAW PUFFS OF SMOKE FROM UNDER THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE HOOD. I GOT OUT AND CAUTIOUSLY LIFTED THE HOOD. THE WIRING NEAREST THE DRIVER'S SIDE BURST INTO FLAMES. I CLOSED THE HOOD TO LIMIT AIRFLOW AND A BYSTANDER CALLED 911. THE FIRE TRUCK CAME AND PUT OUT THE FIRE. ARRANGEMENTS WERE MADE TO TOW THE CAR TO A FORD DEALERSHIP NEARBY. THE REPAIR SHOP REPLACED THE WIRING AND SAID THAT IT WAS NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL BECAUSE IT DID NOT HAVE A CONSTANT CURRENT THROUGH IT. I HAVE THE BURNED PARTS. *NM
CAM POSITIONING SENSOR ON MY 2000 FORD EXCURSION 7.3 POWERSTROKE FAILED, LEAVING ME STRANDED. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS ITEM HAS FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I AM ADVISED THAT THERE ARE A NUMBER OF FAILURES WITH RESPECT TO THE SAME PART. *JB
THE #3 SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS AFTER ONLY 58000 MILES. THIS WAS THE OEM SPARK PLUG. IT DAMAGED THE HEAD, THE COIL AND, OF COURSE, THE SPARK PLUG. A NEW HEAD WILL BE NEEDED. THE DEALER, RANCHO FORD IN TEMECULA, CA, SAYS THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. NOT YET CORRECTED. *JB
THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND WITHOUT WARNING IT CAUGHT ON FIRE. DRIVER CALLED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE. VEHICLE WAS TOWED AND TOTALED BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY. *AK
CONSUMER WAS DRIVING WHEN THE BRAKE AND TURNING SIGNAL INADVERTENTLY WENT OUT. WHEN TAKEN VEHICLE TO DEALER FOR SERVICE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL MALFUNCTIONING. *AK *NM
2000 FORD EXCURSION XLT 7.3L DIESEL. FOUR DOOR LOCK MOTORS FAILED AFTER APPROXIMATELY 75,000 MILES. DOORS DID NOT LOCK OR UNLOCK WITH USE OF ELECTRIC DOOR LOCK SWITCHES LOCATED ON FRONT DOOR HANDLES. REPLACED ALL DOOR LOCK MOTORS AT ASE CERTIFED TECHNICIAN SHOP, FAIRBANKS, ALASKA. OLD PARTS ARE AVAILABLE.*AK

THE CONSUMER RECEIVED RECALL NOTICE IN 2001. NHTAS'S RECALL # 01V258000. RECENTLY THE WIPER COVER STARTED TO BURN, WHICH CAUSED THE MOTOR AND SWITCH NOT TO WORK. *JB

SIDEWALL TIRE FAILURE WITH INSTANT RELEASE OF PRESSURE, VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY AT TIME OF FAILURE.*AK
AT 76000 MILES THE SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT OF MY V10 EXCURSION. THE EXCURSION IS A 2000 MODEL YEAR AND IN VERY GOOD CONDITION. THE PLUGS HAVE NEVER BEEN CHANGED SINCE NEW. FORD WILL NOT FIX IT AS IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THE WARRANTY COMPANY, (HERITAGE INSURANCE) WILL NOT COVER IT AS THEY SAY IT IS A DEFECT WITH THE DESIGN OF THE HEAD AND PLUGS FROM FORD. THEY SAY THERE IS NOT ENOUGH THREADS IN THE HEAD DESIGN. THIS SEEMS TO BE ECHOED ON THE INTERNET IN MANY FORUMS AND OTHER ARTICLES. APPEARENTLY FORD KNOWS ABOUT THIS AND STILL DOES NOTHING, EXCEPT CHAGE THEIR CUSTOMERS THOUSANDS TO FIX THE PROBLEM. FURTHERMORE THE FIX OF REPLACING THE HEAD IS NOT A PERMENANT SOLUTION.*AK
I PURCHASED 4 BIG O BIG FOOT AT TIRES IN AUGUST 2003. IN THE FOUR MONTHS BETWEEN JULY 2004 AND NOVEMBER 2004, I EXPERIENCED 3 SEPARATE HIGH-SPEED CATASTROPHIC BLOW-OUTS ON 3 OF THE TIRES. IN EACH CASE, I WAS TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEED (65 MPH) WITH MY FAMILY IN THE VEHICLE. THE FIRST WAS ON A WARM SUMMER DAY, THE SECOND WAS ON A MODERATE DAY, THE THIRD WAS AT ABOUT 35 DEGREES. THE FIRST TWO BLOW-OUTS OCCURRED ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE. THE THIRD WAS ON THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE. AFTER THE REPLACEMENT OF EACH OF THE FIRST TWO TIRES, THE REMAINING THREE WHEELS WERE ROTATED. IN EACH CASE, IT WAS A STRUGGLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, BUT IN THE THIRD CASE (REAR TIRE), THE CAR SKIDDED DANGEROUSLY OUT OF CONTROL AS THE REAR END SWAYED BACK AND FORTH. HAD I NOT STEERED INTO THE SKID, I AM CERTAIN THE VEHICLE WOULD HAVE ROLLED OVER. THE BIG O DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE TIRES EACH TIME, BUT INSISTED THAT THE FAILURES COULD ONLY HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY ENCOUNTERING SOME ROAD HAZARD WHICH CAUSED THE TIRES TO DE-PRESSURIZE QUICKLY, HEAT UP AND THEN BLOW. HOWEVER, THREE HIGH-SPEED BLOWOUTS IN FOUR MONTHS INDICATES NOT AN ISOLATED CIRCUMSTANCE OR COINCIDENCE, BUT A DANGEROUS AND POTENTIALLY DEADLY PATTERN. *JB
RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2000 FORD EXCURSION. BLEW SPARK PLUG RIGHT OUT OF HEAD. TOOK BACK TO DEALER WHERE I PURCHASED IT. THEY PUT IN A HEIL COIL. 5 MONTHS LATER SAME THING HAPPENED ONLY DIFFERENT SPARK PLUG. TOOK TO FORD. TOLD IT WAS GOING TO COST ME 3500.00 TO REPLACE NEW HEAD. DID SOME RESEARCH ONLINE, THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH 1996-PRESENT FORD TRUCKS AND EVEN FORD MUSTANGS. FORD IS REFUSING TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM. MEANTIME EVERYONE WHO IT HAPPENS TO USUALLY ENDS UP SHELLING OUT $3000.00 PLUS.*AK

I PURCHASED 4 BIG O BIG FOOT AT TIRES IN AUGUST 2003. IN THE FOUR MONTHS BETWEEN JULY 2004 AND NOVEMBER 2004, I EXPERIENCED 3 SEPARATE HIGH-SPEED CATASTROPHIC BLOW-OUTS ON 3 OF THE TIRES. IN EACH CASE, I WAS TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEED (65 MPH) WITH MY FAMILY IN THE VEHICLE. THE FIRST WAS ON A WARM SUMMER DAY, THE SECOND WAS ON A MODERATE DAY, THE THIRD WAS AT ABOUT 35 DEGREES. THE FIRST TWO BLOW-OUTS OCCURRED ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE. THE THIRD WAS ON THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE. AFTER THE REPLACEMENT OF EACH OF THE FIRST TWO TIRES, THE REMAINING THREE WHEELS WERE ROTATED. IN EACH CASE, IT WAS A STRUGGLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, BUT IN THE THIRD CASE (REAR TIRE), THE CAR SKIDDED DANGEROUSLY OUT OF CONTROL AS THE REAR END SWAYED BACK AND FORTH. HAD I NOT STEERED INTO THE SKID, I AM CERTAIN THE VEHICLE WOULD HAVE ROLLED OVER. THE BIG O DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE TIRES EACH TIME, BUT INSISTED THAT THE FAILURES COULD ONLY HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY ENCOUNTERING SOME ROAD HAZARD WHICH CAUSED THE TIRES TO DE-PRESSURIZE QUICKLY, HEAT UP AND THEN BLOW. HOWEVER, THREE HIGH-SPEED BLOWOUTS IN FOUR MONTHS INDICATES NOT AN ISOLATED CIRCUMSTANCE OR COINCIDENCE, BUT A DANGEROUS AND POTENTIALLY DEADLY PATTERN. *JB

THE VEHICLE'S TIRES BEGAN TO WEAR UNEVENLY AND THE SUSPENSION COULD NOT BE BALANCED. *NM THE VEHICLE PULLED CONSTANTLY PULLED TO THE RIGHT AFTER IT WAS ALIGNED. THE CONSUMER INQUIRED AS TO WHETHER THE TIRES ON HIS VEHICLE WAS APART OF THE RECALL. THE FORD REPRESENTATIVE TOLD THE CONSUMER THE TIRES WERE NOT APART OF THE RECALL. A MONTH LATER AFTER GOING TO THE DEALERSHIP THE CONSUMER EXPERIENCED A TIRE BLOWOUT. THE CONSUMER HAS HAD ONGOING PROBLEMS WITH THE TIRES FOR A YEAR. THE CONSUMER WAS TOLD HE WAS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR REIMBURSEMENT BECAUSE HE NO LONGER HAD THE TIRES. *JB
