DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY HEARD A LOUD POP, THEN A CONTINIOUS HUFFING SOUND FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT ACCOMPANIED BY A SEVERE VIBRATION. PULLED VEHICLE INTO THE NEAREST REST STOP AND CHECKED ENGINE, FOUND THE SECOND SPARK PLUG ON THE RIGHT BANK (PASSENGER SIDE) HAD FORCEABILY EJECTED TAKING THE THREADS WITH IT. THE ENGINE IS A TRITON 5.4L. THE ENGINE WAS REPAIRED AT A DEALER (FORD COUNTRY IN HENDERSON NV) BY REPLACEMENT OF THE HEAD. *NM
BLOWN SPARK PLUG IN A 1999 FORD EXPEDITION WITH A 5.4L. VEHICLE WAS SITTING IDLE WHEN FAILURE OCCURRED. INSERTS WERE INSTALLED IN SPARK PLUG HOLE. *NM
SEVERAL TIMES THIS HAPPENED. AFTER RAIN OR SNOW THE ELECTRONICS IN MY 1999 EXPEDITION GOES CRAZY. SUCH AS VEHICLES FAN RUNS AFTER TRUCK IS TURNED OFF, WHEN IN DRIVE RADIO GOES OUT, BEEPING NOISES ETC ETC. THIS IS KNOWN TO BE CAUSED BY A LEAK IN THE VEHICLES WINDSHIELD WHICH IS UNDETECTABLE BY THE OWNER. WATER LEAKS BEHIND THE FUSE PANEL AND THE GEM MODULE AND CAUSES ELECTRICAL HAVOC. CAR WILL EVEN TRY STARTING ON ITS OWN W/O KEYS IN IT. FORD HAS KNOWN ABOUT THIS WINDSHIELD DEFECT AND WILL DO NOTHING TO RECTIFY IT. THIS STARTED THIS YEAR SEVERAL TIMES. THE DEALER IS REPLACING THE WINDSHIELD BECAUSE TO RESEAL IT HAS TO BE REMOVED AND IN THE PROCESS THEY CRACK. THE FUSE BOX AND GEM MODULE ALSO HAS TO BE REPLACED DUE TO CORROSION OVER TIME CAUSED BY THE UNKNOWN LEAK. THE WATER LEAKS DOWN THE FRONT PILLAR AND THEN BEHIND THE DASHBOARD. ALL THE WHILE THE OWNER IS UNAWARE OF THIS HAPPENING OVER TIME. FORD HAS KNOWN ABOUT THE DEFECTIVE SEAL ON THE WINDSHIELDS OF SEVERAL YEAR MODELS OF EXPEDITIONS. THIS IS ALSO A DEFINITE FIRE HAZARD AND A DEFINITE DANGER ESP. THOSE WHO PARK IN THERE ATTACHED GARAGES. REPAIRS COST THE OWNERS BETWEEN $600.00 TO WELL OVER $1000.00. THIS ISN'T FAIR WHEN A DEFECT LIKE THIS IS COMMON KNOWLEDGE TO ALL DEALERS AND OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLES. MY VEHICLE IS A TOP OF THE LINE EDDIE BAUER MODEL AND THE PRICE NEW WAS IN THE $40,000 RANGE. THE NHTSA SHOULD FULLY INVESTIGATE THIS AND DEMAND A RECALL AND REIMBURSEMENT TO THOSE WHO PAID DEARLY FOR THIS DEFECT THAT CAME STRAIGHT FROM THE ASSEMBLY LINE TO US. *JB
DT: CONTACT STATED THERE WAS S NHTSA RECALL, 05V017000 , BUT THE CONTACT DID NOT RECEIVE A RECALL LETTER ON THIS VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND IT CAUGHT ON FIRE WITHOUT ANY WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALED. *AK
ENGINE SPARK PLUG BLOW OUT AT 80,000 MILES ON ENGINE. ENGINE HAD 40,000 ON IT FROM NEW AND WAS CONSUMING OIL DUE TO THE RIGHT HEAD LEAKING OIL. FORD REPLACED THE HEAD GASKET. THE GASKET DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM SO A NEW MOTOR WAS INSTALLED. NOW AT 120,000 (80,000 ON THE MOTOR) AFTER THE SPARK PLUGS WERE CHANGED, A PLUG BLEW OUT OF THE HEAD. A HELICOIL WAS INSTALLED AFTER THE PLUG BLOW OUT BUT THAT ALSO FAILED. REBUILT HEAD IS BEING INSTALLED. FEEL THIS IS A FORD PROBLEM ON THIS SPARK PLUG BLOW OUT. THE 5.4L HEAD IS NOT MANUFACTURED TO WITHSTAND THE HORSEPOWER. *JB
I WORK AT A TIRE STORE AND HAVE SEEN ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS, LUG STUDS SNAPPING WITH TORQUE WRENCH USE OF 100 PSI. ON FORD AND LINCOLN TRUCKS AND SUV'S. IT IS ONLY HAPPENING TO THE ONES WITH 10 MM LUG STUDS. THE METAL ON THE INSIDE OF THE STUD HAS VARYING SHADES OF GREY IN IT. IT LOOKS LIKE THE METAL IS NOT THE SAME ALL THE WAY THROUGH. ONCE THE STUD SNAPS, THE NUT CAN BE SCREWED OFF BY HAND AND IS NOT CROSS THREADED. WHEN TRYING TO TORQUE THEM, THE NUT KEEPS TURNING UNTIL THE STUD SNAPS. WE HAVE DONE THIS USING DIFFERENT IMPACT GUNS AND TORQUE WRENCHES ON A MINIMUM OF 15 VEHICLES WITH ANY WHERE FROM 1 TO 8 STUDS SNAPPING. THE CUSTOMERS THINK WE ARE BREAKING THEM FROM INCOMPETENCE. FORD RECALLED STUDS FROM 1997 TO 1998. I HAVE SEEN IT ON 1999 AND 2000 MODELS WITH 10 MM STUDS. WHEN I SEND THEM TO THE DEALER ON THE LATER MODELS, THEY ARE TOLD IT IS NOT COVERED. *JB
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD EXPEDITION. IN 2005, WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH, THE CONTACT HEARD A POPPING SOUND AND STOPPED THE VEHICLE. HE NOTICED THAT THE SPARK PLUG HAD COME THROUGH THE ENGINE. A MONTH LATER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE PURCHASE AND INCIDENT DATES WERE UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 130,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000.
UPON START UP MY 1999 FORD EXPEDITION BLEW A SPARK PLUG OUT OF THE ENGINE BLOCK. FORD REFUSED TO ADMIT THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM . REPAIR IS APPROXIMATELY$4000.00. NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS AT CONSUMER AFFAIRS ATTEST TO THIS PROBLEM. *NM
DT: THE CONTACT RECEIVED RECALL O5S28 ON OCTOBER 8, 2005, AND THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO HAVE RECALL REPAIRS DONE WITHIN A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME WHEN HE CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP AT FIRST THEY TOLD HIM TO CALL BACK AND MAKE AN APPOINTMENT. THEN THEY TOLD HIM TO BRING VEHICLE IN ON OCTOBER 23, 2005, AND HE WOULD HAVE TO LEAVE THE VEHICLE ALL DAY. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED THAT IT WOULD TAKE THIS LONG TO HAVE THE RECALL REPAIRS DONE BECAUSE OF THE SAFETY ISSUE . HE FELT THAT IT WAS DERIMENTAL TO HIS FAMILY. *AK
I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE (05S28) FROM FORD IN SEPTEMBER OF 2005 STATING THAT THE SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH MAY OVERHEAT CAUSING AN UNDERHOOD FIRE IN MY 1999 EXPEDITION. IT ALSO NOTED THAT THE NEAREST DEALER WILL TEMPORARILY DISCONNECT THE SWITCH UNTIL A PERMANENT REPAIR IS PERFORMED. THE DEALER REFUSES TO DISCONNECT THE SWITCH AND STILL HASN'T RECEIVED THE PARTS TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME TO CALL BACK IN FEBRUARY 2006. *NM
MY 1999 FORD EXPEDITION CAUGHT ON FIRE IN MY DRIVE WAY 2 HOURS AFTER I PARKED IT. THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WAS TOTALLY DESTROYED CAUSING A TOTAL LOSS OF THE VEHICLE. IT IS UNDER INVESTIGATION. I BELIEVE IT WAS DUE TO THE SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATION DEVICE. *NM
FRONT WINDSHIELD WIPER ON MY FORD 1999 EXPEDITION OPERATES BY ITSELF WHEN CAR IS ON. THE WIPER SWITCH IS SET TO OFF WHEN THEY COME ON. WORRIED ABOUT ELECTRICAL ISSUES WITH THIS VEHICLE FROM READING OTHER CONSUMER ENTRIES. *NM
I NOTICED A HANDLING PROBLEM ON MY 1999 FORD EXPEDITION. INSPECTION REVEALED BROKEN SWAY BAR LINKS ON BOTH SIDES. I READ ABOUT THE RECALLS PERTAINING TO THIS PROBLEM STATING FORD ACKNOWLEDGED THE PROBLEM AND WOULD REPLACE THE ORIGINAL LINKS WITH A STRONGER LINK. I JUST HAD MY VEHICLE SERVICED AT BUTTERFIELD FORD IN SANDY, UTAH AND POINTED OUT THIS PROBLEM. THEY STATED THEY WERE NOT UNDER ANY OBLIGATION TO REPLACE THE LINKS. IRONICALLY, THEY DID NOT EVEN ASK ME IF I WANTED THEM REPLACED AND THEY RELEASED MY VEHICLE WITHOUT REPLACING THEM. I HAVE NEVER HAD THIS VEHICLE OFF ROAD NOR HAS IT EVER HIT A CURB, CHUCKHOLE, BUMP ETC. WITH ANY ABNORMAL FORCE. THESE LINKS ARE CLEARLY DEFECTIVE AND SHOULD BE A RECALL ITEM, IF THEY ARE NOT. *NM
AFTER TAKING OUR '99 FORD EXPEDITION IN DUE TO A SPARK PLUG SHOOTING OUT WHILE MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING TO LUNCH WE HAD IT REPAIRED OF COURSE, $517 DOLLARS LATER. HE LOST TIME AT WORK THAT DAY TO GET IT TOWED AND OF COURSE WE WERE WITHOUT OUR VEHICLE FOR A WEEK AT OUR EXPENSE. THERE WAS A THREAD REPAIR INSERT IN CYLINDER #5 SPARK PLUG HOLE DONE TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM ON MARCH 15, 2005. LAST THURSDAY SEPT. 15TH IT BLEW AGAIN AS MY HUSBAND WAS LEAVING OUR HOME WITH OUR SON. THE HEAD NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. WE ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF DECIDING WHAT TO DO AS WE CAN'T AFFORD THIS $3,000 DOLLAR PROBLEM THAT IF YOU INSPECT IS VERY COMMON, MORE SO THAN THE SPEED CONTROL RECALL. EVEN A FORD EMPLOYEE MY HUSBAND WAS DISCUSSING THIS WITH TRYING TO HELP US OUT SAID HE SEES THIS EVERY DAY! *NM
DT: 1999 FORD EXPEDITION. THE CONSUMER STATED VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE. HE CONTACTED FORD ,AND THEY STATED THIS WAS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION. THIS HAPPENED ON SEPTEMBER 12, 2005. THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN PARKED ABOUT AN HOUR BEFORE HE WAS INFORMED IT WAS ON FIRE. THERE WERE NO PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE PRIOR TO THIS. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TOTALED. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN INSPECTED TO SEE WHY THE FIRE STARTED. FORD STATED THEY WILL EXAMINE THE VEHICLE AT THE WRECKING YARD WHERE IT WAS LOCATED. THERE WERE TWO FIRE REPORTS, ONE BY THE CASINO WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS LOCATED, AND ONE BY THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. *AK
DT: THE CONTACT STATES THERE I NHTSA S RECALL CAMPAIGN 05V388000 CONCERNING CRUISE CONTROL. THE PARTS NEEDED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE ARE NOT AVAILABLE AT THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP. THE CONTACT SPOKE TO THE MANUFACTURER, WHO HAS CONFIRMED THAT THE PARTS WERE NOT AVAILABLE. *AK
MAJOR ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS: AIR SUSPENSION STOP WORKING; INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR LAMPS CONTINUALLY CLICK ON AND OFF; REAR WINDSHIELD WIPERS STOP WORKING. ABS WARNING CLICKS ON AN OFF, WHEN OFF BRAKES TEND TO LOCK DURING BRAKING. *JB
I HAVE A 1999 FORD EXPEDITION EDDIE BAUER 4X4 THAT HAS ALL THE SYMPTOMS OF YOUR INVESTIGATION #EA05015. I TOOK MY VEHICLE IN WHILE IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY AND I WAS DENIED A CLAIM FOR THEM TO FIX IT AT MY LOCAL DEALER BECAUSE THEY SAID THAT THE CAUSE WAS DUE TO MOISTURE AND IT WAS NOT COVERED BY UNDER WARRANTY. THIS SOUNDED TO ME TO BE A MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND FELT IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIXED BY THEM. DURING THAT TIME I HAD TO REPLACE MY TRANSMISSION AND TRANSFER CASE WHICH ARE CONTROLLED IN SOME WAY BY THE GEM MODULE SO I AM TOLD. I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIX THE GEM AND FUSE BOX TO THIS DATE DUE TO THE HIGH COST THAT WAS PRESENTED TO ME. I AM NOT CERTAIN OF THE ACTUAL DATE THIS TOOK PLACE BUT IT WAS IDENTIFIED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. *JB
IN JUNE OF 2004, THE SUNROOF OF OUR 1999 FORD EXPEDITION STOPPED WORKING. WE HAD TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE TRACK AND MOTOR. NOW, JUST OVER A YEAR LATER, THE SUNROOF HAS STOPPED WORKING. WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE TRACK AGAIN. OF COURSE, THE WARRANTY IS NO LONGER GOOD. *JB
DT: THE CONTACT STATED 1999 FORD EXPEDITION CAUGHT ON FIRE ON 8-30-05. THE CAR WAS PARKED IN THE FRONT YARD, CLOSE TO THE PORCH. THE FIRE ORIGINATED FROM UNDER THE HOOD. THE FIRE WAS PUT OUT WITH A WATER HOSE. SHE TOOK VEHICLE TO A DEALER, AND THE DEALER REPLACED THE SCDS AT A COST OF $357.27. AND THEY TOLD HER THE VEHICLE WAS NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL AT THAT TIME. SINCE THEN, RECALL 05V388000 WAS ISSUED. THE DEALER TOLD HER THEY COULD NOT REIMBURSE HER UNTIL FORD MOTOR COMPANY REIMBURSED THEM. *AK
ONE SPARK PLUG ON MY 1999 FORD EXPEDITION EXPLODED AND BURST THROUGH THE HEAD OF THE ENGINE. MY WIFE WAS PICKING UP MY CHILD AT SCHOOL. SHE PARKED THE VEHICLE, SHUT IT OFF AND MINUTES LATER RETURNED. AS SHE WAS STARTING THE EXPEDITION BOTH HER AND MY DAUGHTER HEARD A VERY LARGE EXPLOSION FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO RUN AND A CONSTANT POPPING SOUND COULD BE HEARD. SHE IMMEDIATELY SHUT OFF THE ENGINE AND NOTICED A VERY STRONG GAS/EXHAUST TYPE SMELL. SHE CALLED ME AND I ARRIVED TO CHECK THE VEHICLE OUT. I INSPECTED ALL THE FLUID LEVELS AND FUSES AND THEY WERE FINE. I BRIEFLY STARTED THE ENGINE WITH THE HOOD OPEN TO HELP NARROW THE LOCATION OF THE SOUND. THE SOUND WAS COMING FROM THE TOP OF THE ENGINE ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. I STARTED INSPECTING THIS AREA AND FOUND THAT THE THIRD SPARK PLUG FROM THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE ON THE PASSENGER SIDE HAD BEEN COMPLETELY BLOWN OUT OF THE HEAD OF THE ENGINE. IT IS VERY FORTUNATE THAT THIS OCCURRED IN A PARKING LOT. MY WIFE AND DAUGHTER WERE BOTH VERY STARTLED BY THE LOUD EXPLOSION AND I CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF THIS HAD OCCURRED ON THE ROAD AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. I BELIEVE THAT AN ACCIDENT WOULD HAVE RESULTED. I HAVE SINCE DONE SOME RESEARCH ON THIS PARTICULAR ISSUE AND HAVE LEARNED THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS ON FORD VEHICLES AND HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO THE ATTENTION OF THE NHTSA. I WOULD LIKE TO FILE THIS COMPLAINT AND FIND OUT WHAT THE NHTSA IS DOING ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC ISSUE. THE DESIGN ISSUE WITH THIS PARTICULAR SPARK PLUG/ENGINE HEAD COMBINATION IS WELL KNOWN IN AUTOMOTIVE CIRCLES. WHAT IS THE NHTSA DOING ABOUT THIS ISSUE. MY 1999 FORD TAURUS WITH ONLY 59,371 MILES ON IT HAD THE RACK AND PINION TO GO OUT, ISN'T IT A LITTLE TO SOON FOR SOMETHING LIKE THAT TO HAPPEN? WITH ME LIVING ON GUAM PARTS ARE HARD TO COME BY, BUT I AM SEARCHING THE WEB. *NM
DT: CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD EXPEDITION . VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE ON AUGUST 16, 2005 AT 1:00 PM. THE CONSUMER PARKED THE VEHICLE IN PARKING STRUCTURE AT APPROXIMATELY 7:30AM, AFTER DRIVING ABOUT 30-45 MINUTES. THE FIRE STARTED UNDERNEATH THE HOOD ON DRIVER'S SIDE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT STATED IT LOOKED AS THOUGH IT WAS AN ELECTRICAL FIRE. THERE WERE NO INDICATIONS THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER HAD NOT BEEN USING THE CRUISE CONTROL BECAUSE THERE HAD BEEN PROBLEMS ENGAGING THE CRUISE CONTROL. TH A POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENT REPORT WERE TAKEN. THE CONSUMER DID NOT HAVE PICTURES OF THE VEHICLE AFTER IT CAUGHT ON FIRE. THERE WAS STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO THE PARKING AREA AND TO THE VEHICLE PARKED NEXT TO THE VEHICLE THAT CAUGHT ON FIRE. *AK *NM
REAR WIPER STOPPED WORKING OCCASIONALLY. THE ODOMETER FAILED INTERMITTENTLY. NO REPAIRS HAVE BEEN MADE; CAN'T AFFORD TO AT THE PRESENT TIME. *NM
WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WITH MY FAMILY MY 6 YEAR OLD FORD EXPEDITION BLEW A SPARK PLUG RIGHT OUT OF THE HEAD. IT HAS COME TO MY ATTENTION THAT THIS IS AN ON GOING PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE. WE HAD BEEN DRIVING FOR ABOUT 5 HOURS COMING HOME FROM A FAMILY VACATION WHEN THIS OCCURRED IN NEW JERSEY. WE WERE LUCKY IN THIS CASE BECAUSE WE WERE ABLE TO MAKE IT ACROSS THE HIGHWAY AND OFF THE ROAD. THE PROBLEM COMPLETELY DESTROYED THE HEAD ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ENGINE AND THE VEHICLE WAS UNUSABLE FOR OVER TWO WEEKS WHILE THE LOCAL FORD DEALER WORKED ON THE PROBLEM. THAT HEAD HAD TO BE REPLACED AS WELL AS MANY OTHER PARTS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS PROBLEM. THE DEALER STATED THAT THIS COULD HAPPEN AGAIN WITH THE HEAD ON THE RIGHT SIDE. BETWEEN THE REPAIRS TO THE ENGINE AND THE RENTAL CAR FOR THE TIME OF REPAIR, THIS WAS A VERY EXPENSIVE (5000 $) PROBLEM. WHICH I STATED EARLIER APPEARS TO BE AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THIS MOTOR. *JB
DT: VEHICLE WAS PARKED TO THE SIDE OF CONSUMER'S HOUSE AFTER 10 MINUTES CONSUMER'S HUSBAND HEARD THE FAN SHUT OFF, WENT OUTSIDE TO LOOK AND THE CAR WAS IN FLAMES. *AK
DT: 1999 FORD EXPEDITION. CONSUMER HAD A SPARK PLUG BLOW OUT. THE SPARK PLUG CAME OUT WHEN CONSUMER'S WIFE WAS DRIVING. THE PLUG WAS STILL ATTACHED, AND THERE WERE SPARKS COMING FROM THIS. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED OVER AND TURNED OFF. CONSUMER HEARD A FUNNY NOISE. A LOCAL MECHANIC STATED THEY CAN FIX IT WITH A THREAD INSERT. WHEN CONSUMER CALLED FORD, THEY STATED THEY WOULD NOT FIX THE PROBLEM, BUT THEY WOULD CHANGE THE HEAD. THIS HAPPENED ON AUGUST 1, 2005, AT 100,000 MILES. THE OWNER'S MANUAL STATED THERE SHOULD BE NO SPARK PLUG MAINTENANCE UNTIL 100,000 MILES. THESE WERE THE ORIGINAL SPARK PLUGS. CONSUMER STATES VEHICLE COULD HAVE CAUGHT ON FIRE. *AK
THE AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM. THIS IS THE SECOND 1999 EXPEDITION THAT I HAVE OWNED AND THE SAME THING HAS HAPPENED TO BOTH AND I AM UNABLE TO GET ANY HELP FROM ANYBODY AS TO WHY THIS HAS HAPPENED AGAIN. ON BOTH VEHICLES THE AIR SUSPENSION STOPPED WORKING IN THE REAR SECTION CAUSING THE VEHICLE NOT TO LIFT UP AND MAKING THE VEHICLE BOUNCE ALL ACROSS THE ROAD IF YOU TRY TO DRIVE IT. IT DOES NOT RAISE BACK UP AT ALL AND THUS MAKING THE VEHICLE NOT ABLE TO BE DRIVEN. I WANT TO KNOW AM I THE ONLY ONE THAT IS HAVING THIS ISSUE AND ALSO WHY WITH TWO OF THE SAME MODEL VEHICLES THAT I HAVE OWNED? IS THIS A DEFECT? THE 1999 FORD EXPEDITION CAUGHT FIRE AND BURNED THE ENTIRE CAR AND GARAGE IT WAS STORED IN. THE FIRE INVESTIGATION REPORTS THE FIRE STARTED IN THE FUSE PANEL. *JB *SC
1) NOTICED IN MID MAY THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL ON MY 1999 FORD EXPEDITION STOPPED WORKING. NO OTHER PERFORMANCE ISSUES WERE NOTICED AND SINCE IT WAS NOT CRITICAL IT WAS NOT REPAIRED AT THAT TIME. 2) ON JULY 27, 2005 THE 1999 FORD EXPEDITION CAUGHT ON FIRE AND BURNED. THE FIRE CHIEF ON SITE INDICATED THAT THE FIRE STARTED IN THE AREA OF THE MASTER CYLINDER, WHERE THE SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH IS LOCATED. 3) MY INSURANCE COMPANY, USAA IS IN THE PROCESS OF INVESTIGATING THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE AND I AM AWAITING INFORMATION FROM THEM. I HAVE NOT CONTACTED FORD AT THIS TIME. *NM
I HAVE A '99 FORD EXPEDITION AND I DEVELOPED A PROBLEM WHERE I LOST THE BRAKE AND TURN SIGNAL LIGHTS IN MY CAR. I REPLACED THE FUSED AND IT IMMEDIATELY POPPED AGAIN. SO I TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC, AND HE LOOKED AT IT. THERE WAS BRAKE FLUID UP IN THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH, ALL THE WAY UP IN THE CABLE HARNESS (IN THE WIRES), AND IN THE CONNECTOR AT THE JUNCTION/FUSE BOX. WHEN HE REMOVED THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH, HE DISCOVERED THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH WAS THE NEW SWITCH AND IT SPARKED AND IT CAUGHT FIRE. LUCKILY THE FLAME WAS CONTAINED TO JUST THE SWITCH AND THE MECHANIC WAS ABLE TO CUT THE SWITCH OUT OF THE CAR AND BLOW IT OUT BEFORE THE FIRE SPREAD. HE TOLD ME THE CAR HAD TO GO TO FORD AND HE SUGGESTED THAT I NOT DRIVE IT, AS IT WAS A FIRE HAZARD. SO IT WAS TOWED. THE FORD DEALERSHIP GOT IN AND INVESTIGATED AND THEY DETERMINED THAT I NEEDED A WHOLE NEW CABLING HARNESS BECAUSE OF MELTED WIRES AND BRAKE FLUID CONTAMINATION AND THAT THE PRICE WAS GOING TO BE $500 AND A NEW CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH AND FUSES. I INSTRUCTED FORD TO GO AHEAD WITH THE REPAIRS AND TO SAVE ALL OF THE OLD PARTS. FORD SAID THAT BECAUSE THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH HAD ALREADY BEEN REPLACED, THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT SUBJECT TO THE RECALL DESPITE THE ENTIRE LIST OF OTHER COINCIDENTAL FAILURES THAT COULD HAVE LED TO A FIRE AND POSSIBLE LOSS OF LIFE. I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT HAD THE OLD SWITCH STILL BEEN IN PLACE, THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN A FIRE ALREADY. AS THINGS WERE, MY MECHANIC JOE TAYLOR, AT TAYLOR'S AUTOMOTIVE SAID IT WAS JUST A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THIS ONE WOULD GO UP.

MY 1999 FORD EXPEDITION HAS HAD TO HAVE THE IGNITION COIL PACKS REPLACED AT LEAST 4 TIMES. THE SYMPTOMS ARE MISFIRE AND A RESULTING SEVERE ENGINE VIBRATION UPON ACCELERATION. ONCE THE VEHICLE REACHES A CRUISING SPEED, THE PROBLEM APPEARS TO GO AWAY, BUT ONLY UNTIL YOU ACCELERATE AGAIN. FORD MOTOR COMPANY KNOWS THERE IS IS DESIGN FLAW IN THESE VEHICLES WHICH CAUSES WATER DRIPPING FROM SOME SOURCE (THE AIR CONDITIONER OR A WINDSHIELD THAT IS NOT SEALED) TO SHORT OUT THE IGNITION COIL PACKS. THEY HAVE A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN OUT ON THE PROBLEM, BUT THE PROBLEM IS NOT ALWAYS REPORTED AS A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND THEY FAIL TO DIAGNOSE THIS PROPERLY IN SOME CASES. THE FIRST 2 TIMES THIS HAPPENED, I TOOK THE CAR TO TWO DIFFERENT FORD DEALERSHIPS. BOTH TRIPS COST ME CLOSE TO $400 EACH TIME. THE THIRD TIME IT HAPPENED, WE WENT TO OUR LOCAL GARAGE AND THE GUY SAID THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM, WELL KNOWN TO AUTO MECHANICS, BUT THAT THE INDIVIDUAL FAILING CYLINDER COULD NOT BE READILY DIAGNOSED BY THE COMPUTER CODES, SO IT WAS AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR BECAUSE THEY MIGHT HAVE TO TRY ALL 8 COIL PACKS TO LOCATE AND IDENTIFY THE OFFENDER. THE LAST COIL PACK THAT FAILED WAS REPLACED BY MY HUSBAND AT A COST OF $45.00 AS THE FAILING UNIT WAS EASILY ACCESSIBLE. YOU CAN SEE THE GREAT DIFFERENCE IN COST OF DOING IT YOURSELF VS. BOTH OF MY TRIPS TO THE DEALERSHIP. MY TRUCK IS FAILING AGAIN NOW AND OF COURSE, IT IS EXHIBITING THE SAME SYMPTOMS OF A COIL PACK FAILURE. THIS TIME, HOWEVER, THE COIL PACK IN QUESTION IS NOT EASILY ACCESSIBLE FOR THE HOME MECHANIC AND WE WILL BE FORCED TO TAKE IT IN FOR REPAIR.
1999 FORD EXPEDITION 5.4L 4WD DRIVING DOWN ROAD AND SPARK PLUG SHOT OUT OF THE HEAD. CAUSING A LOUD POPPING NOISE AND BAD IDLE. REPLACED SPARKPLUG AND HAD HELI-COIL INSTALLED. TWO WEEKS LATER, ANOTHER SPARK PLUG SHOT OUT OF THE OTHER SIDE OF THE HEAD.
DT: THE CONSUMER STATED THAT THE BRAKES FAILED AND THE VEHICLE LOST ALL BRAKING POWER AND THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC, AND HE STATED THAT BRAKE LINES CORRODED. THEY CORRODED IN THE BOX FRAME UNDER THE DRIVER'S DOOR AND THE BRAKLINE BROKE ALLOWING ALL OF THE BRAKING FLUID RUN OUT. THIS HAPPENED ON JUNE 19, 2005. THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND NO CRASH. THIS WAS DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS ON A LEVEL ROAD AND ONLY GOING 25 MPH. *AK *SC
I WAS TRAVELING 46 MPH I FELL ASLEEP HITTING A STEEL TRAFFIC POLE HEAD ON, WHEN MY PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG DEPLOYED BUT MY DRIVERS SIDE DID NOT. MY CAR BURST INTO FLAMES I WAS PULLED OUT OF MY VEHICLE AT THAT TIME MY VEHICLE WAS 190 DEGREES. NOW I HAVE SEIZURES DAILY,BROKEN RIBS, BROKEN DISC IN MY BACK, AND UNABLE TO WORK OR DRIVE DUE TO MY INJURIES. *NM
FATHER WENT TO REPLACE BRAKE PADS ON FRONT BRAKES. OBSERVED THAT LINKS FROM ANTI-SWAY BAR WERE BROKEN ON ONE SIDE AND MISSING ON OTHER SIDE. CAR HAS LESS THAN 75,000 MILES ON IT. LOSS OF ANTI SWAY CONTROL ALLOWS CAR TO POTENTIALLY ROLL. RECOMEND MANUFACTURE CHECK 1999 EXPEDITIONS.

1999 FORD EXPEDITION WITH 5.4 TRITON V8. SPARK PLUG IS EJECTED FROM THE ALUMINUM CYLINDAR HEAD. IMMEDIATELY UPON THE PLUG BEING "BLOWN" FROM THE POSITION ON THE HEAD I COULD SMELL FUEL AND THE ENGINE BEGAN TO VIOLENTLY MAKE A LOUD "POPPING" SOUND. I HAVE FOUND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ON THE WEB REGARDING THIS BUT CANNOT FIND ANY RESOLUTION MEASURES. BOUGHT THE TRUCK USED WITH 85K MILES BUT I HAVE READ OTHER COMPLAINTS WHERE THE PLUGS BLOW OUT AT MUCH LOWER MILEAGE. HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED BECAUSE I WAS ADVISED BY THE DEALER THAT, "IT WOULDN'T BE A GOOD IDEA TO DRIVE IT IF YOU SMELL FUEL." I HAD THE SERVICE REP TELL ME THAT, "THIS IS PRETTY COMMON IN OUR LIGHTING MODELS WITH THE V10, BUT NOT WITH OUR V8 MODELS." HE ALSO TELLS ME THAT THE PLUGS WERE TOO SHORT FOR THE ENGINE BUT I CHECKED WITH THE MECHANIC THAT CHANGED MY PLUGS AND HE SAYS THAT HE PUT THE REPLACEMENT SPEC PLUGS THAT FORD RECOMMENDED. TWO YEARS AGO WE PURCHASED A 1999 FORD EXPEDITION. VEHICLE HAS RUN EXCEPTIONALLY WELL WITH NO PROBLEMS UNTIL ABOUT TWO MONTHS AGO WHEN CRUISE CONTROL STOPPED WORKING ALTOGETHER. MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING OUR 1999 FORD EXPEDITION AND HAD JUST CROSSED THE STATE LINE FROM CONNECTICUT INTO NEW YORK ON I-84. THERE WAS A LOUD BANG IN THE ENGINE AND A CONSISTENT BANGING THEREAFTER. THE CAR WAS NOT DRIVABLE AND MY HUSBAND PULLED OFF THE HIGHWAY AND CALLED AAA FOR A TOW. WE HAD THE CAR TOWED OVER AN HOUR TO THE FORD DEALER NEAR OUR HOME. THEY DETERMINED THAT THE #3 SPARKPLUG BLEW OUT OF THE ENGINE. IT CAUSED MAJOR DAMAGE. WE HAD TO HAVE THE ENTIRE ENGINE HEAD ASSEMBLY REPLACED WHICH COST US OVER $3500 AND WE WERE WITHOUT OUR CAR FOR TWO WEEKS.

AT 11:16PM THE POLICE RANG MY BELL TO INFORM ME THAT MY VEHICLE HAD BEEN INVOLVED IN A FIRE. THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE WAS COMPLETELY BURNED AND DESTROYED. NHTSA RECALL# 05 V 017: VEHICLE CAUGHT FIRE UNDER THE HOOD WHILE PARKED ON THE STREET FOR AN UNDETERMINED TIME. CONSUMER WAS OUT OF TOWN WHEN THIS FIRE OCCURRED. THE LOCAL POLICE AND THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE AND THE POLICE MADE A REPORT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED AT THIS TIME. *JB
