I AM CONCERNED WITH THE FAULTY MECHANICS ON THIS VEHICLE. I HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM HAPPEN TWICE NOW SINCE OWNING THIS VEHICLE. ON JAN 27-2001, I WAS COMING OFF THE 5 FWY AND LOST ALL POWER OF BRAKES. I HAD TO DOWNSHIFT TO 1ST GEAR TO GET MY VEHICLE TO STOP, ALMOST CAUSING A SERIOUS ACCIDENT AT BEACH BLVD. 2ND TIME, I WAS TRAVELING ON THE 91 FWY AT APPROX 70 MPH WHEN MY VEHICLE STARTED SWERVING AND BECAME VERY BUMPY. I HAD TO VEER OFF THE FWY IN A STATE OF SHOCK AND DANGEROUS MATTER. WHEN I STOPPED, MY TRUCK DROPPED IN THE FRONT RIGHT AREA. I GOT OUT TO LOOK AND SAW THAT THE WHEEL HAD COME OFF AND WAS LEANING INTO THE INSIDE OF MY TIRE WELL. I AM NOW AFRAID OF DRIVING THIS VEHICLE AND REPORTING IT TO YOU SO YOU CAN LOOK INTO IT. PLEASE FOLLOW UP WITH ME AS TO YOUR ACTIONS AND AS TO WHAT ACTIONS I NEED TO DO TO TAKE CARE OF THIS MATTER. PE 00 020/TREAD SEPARATION: LEFT REAR TIRE EXPERIENCED A RIPPLE AND A BUBBLE ON SIDEWALL WHILE TRAVELING AT 70 MPH ON A 2000, FORD, EXPEDITION; ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT, TIRE SIZE P255/70R16, DOT# UNAVAILABLE. FIRESTONE NOTIFIED, AND INFORMED CONSUMER THAT IT WAS NOT COVERED UNDER A RECALL. PE00 020; CONSUMER WAS TRAVELING ABOUT 10MPH ON A SIDE STREET COMING TOWARDS A INTERSECTION FOR A STOP SIGN. SHE CAME TOWARDS A FULL STOP, AND STARTED TO BACK UP, AND HEARD A NOISE. WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 40 MPH RIGHT REAR TIRE WENT FLAT. FOUND OUT THAT TREAD WAS SEPARATING, AND ALL AIR WAS COMING FROM TIRE. FORD, EXPEDITION ,2000 P-255/70R16 DOT W20U. *AK CONSUMER HAS REPLACED ALL TIRES. *SLC
FRONT END COLLISION AT 40 MPH AND AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. HUSBAND WAS INJURED. *AK VEHICLE WAS TOTALED. *SLC
WHILE DRIVING 35-40 MPH VEHICLE HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE HEAD-ON, AND NEITHER AIRBAG DEPLOYED. *AK
I HAD JUST GOTTEN ON INTERSTATE 71 IN OHIO & WAS GOING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH WHEN THE RIGHT REAR TIRE BLEW OUT. WHEN I RETURNED TO NY, I SHOWED THE TIRE TO MY MECHANIC WHO SAID IT LOOKED LIKE THE SIDEWALL FAILED. I THEN WENT TO VAN KLEEK'S TIRE, FIRESTONE DEALER IN LAKE KATRINE, NY. THE TECHNICIAN AGREED THAT IT APPEARED THAT THE SIDEWALL FAILED BUT SENT ME TO THE FIRESTONE SERVICE CENTER IN WAPPINGERS FALLS TO HAVE IT REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. HE WENT SO FAR AS TO SAY THAT THEY SHOULD REPLACE ALL FOUR TIRES BASED UPON THE PROBLEMS WITH OTHER WILDERNESS TIRES. THE FIRESTONE TECH. SAID THAT IT WAS CLEARLY A ROADHAZARD; THAT I MUST HAVE HIT SOMETHING AND THAT IT WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY BUT THEY WOULD GIVE ME 30% CREDIT ON A NEW TIRE. I CALLED THE 800-356-4644 NUMBER IN MY FIRESTONE WARRANTY MANUAL & EXPLAINED THE SITUATION. THE REPRESENTATIVE TOLD ME THAT IF I WAS NOT SATISFIED WITH THIS STORE'S ASSESMENT, I SHOULD GO TO ANOTHER FIRESTONE STORE IN NEWBURGH OR MIDDLETOWN. I DECLINED & RETURNED TO VAN KLEEK'S THE FOLLOWING DAY. I WAS CHARGED $130 FOR A REPLACEMENT TIRE, EVEN THOUGH THEY FOUND NO PUNCTURES OR OTHER DAMAGE TO THE TREAD OR EVIDENCE OF ROADHAZARD. MAJOR FRONT END COLLISION. SEAT BELT WAS ON - DRIVER SOLE OCCUPANT. AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY. FORD WAS NOTIFIED, AND TO DATE HAS DONE NOTHING TO EXPLAIN WHY THE AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY. VEHICLE IS AVAILABLE FOR INSPECTION, BUT FORD HAS NOT CHOSEN TO LOOK AT IT, AND CANNOT OFFER ANY REASON WHY THE AIRBAG WOULD NOT DEPLOY IN SUCH A CRASH. MY 2000 FORD EXPEDITION XLT OUT OF THE BLUE STARTED ACTING BIZARRE. COME TO FIND OUT THE WINDSHIELD SEAL HAD A LEAK WHICH IN TURN DESTROYED MY GEM MODULE AND FUSE BOX. ACCORDING TO OTHERS THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT IS OUT OF HAND. NEW VEHICLE SUBMITTED TO DEALER FOR ENGINE OIL LEAK WARRANTY SERVICE AT ODOMETER 3973, 9402, 9565, AND 11,864. ALL MAJOR GASKETS REPLACED IN COURSE OF WARRANTY SERVICE. ON FOURTH WARRANTY SERVICE VISIT, PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED AS WARPED BLOCK. REMANUFACTURED ENGINE INSTALLED. WHEN FORD MANUFACTURED VEHICLE THERE WAS NO STABALIZER INSTALLED IN ROOF OF VEHICLE. NOT INSTALLING STABILIZER, CAUSES A LOUD BOOMING NOISE TO BE HEARD WHEN WINDOWS ARE ROLLED UP, AND ROOF OF VEHICLE IS CAPABLE OF BEING PRESSED DOWN. DEALERSHIP IS NOW IN POSSESSION OF VEHICLE, AND IS GOING TO TAKE TOP HALF OF VEHICLE OFF AND INSTALL A STABALIZER, THEN, REWELD COMPONENTS OF VEHICLE BACK TOGETHER. AT HIGH SPEED, ON LONG SUSTAINED, STEEP GRADES 5-7%, AT HIGH RPM, THE STEERING LOCKS UP FOR 2-10 SECONDS. THE STEERING MAKES A NOISE AND THEN BREAKS FREE. I HAVE BROUGHT THIS TO THE DEALERSHIP 4 TIMES AND THEY SAY THEY CAN NOT FIND A PROBLEM AND CAN NOT REPRODUCE THIS EVENT. EVERY TIME I DRIVE INTO THE COLORADO MOUNTAINS THIS PROBLEMS RECURS. THIS PROBLEM NEVER SHOWS UP ON FLAT TERRAIN. THIS PROBLEM IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. EVER SINCE WE PURCHASED A 2000 FORD EXPEDITION AND DROVE THE VEHICLE OFF THE LOT, A FAN HAS BEEN TURNING OFF AND ON WHETHER THE VEHICLE IS ON OR OFF. WE TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER WHEN IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY, BUT NOTHING WAS FOUND. NOW, THE FAN IS TURNING ON MORE OFTEN AND IT IS LOUDER THAN BEFORE. I HAD MY TIRES INSPECTED AT THE SEARS AUTO CENTER IN ODESSA, TX. THE VEHICLE HAD DEVELOPED A VAGUE ROUGHNESS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THE INSPECTOR FOUND DEPRESSIONS IN THE CENTER OF THE TREADS ON TWO OF THE TIRES AND TOLD ME THAT THIS INDICATED THAT ONE OR MORE OF THE BELTS UNDER THE TREADS HAD SEPARATED. I HAD ALL FOUR TIRES REPLACED WITH GOODYEAR TIRES AND I HAVE THE ORIGINAL TIRES IN MY GARAGE.( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: 255 70 R16 )
THERE IS A "CRACK/TEAR" ON THE UPPER SIDE WALL THAT I DISCOVERED ON 8/28/00. I TOOK IT TO FIRESTONE AND WAS INFORMED THAT IT WAS CAUSED BY ROAD HAZARD; I DON'T FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH FIRESTONE'S RESPONSE AND AM WORRIED THAT IT IS A DEFECTIVE TIRE. I CAME HOME FROM WORK AND WENT INTO THE SUPERMARKET. WHEN I CAME OUT I NOTICED MY RIGHT REAR TIRE WAS ALMOST FLAT. I PUT THE SPARE ON AND THE NEXT MORNING DROVE UP TO THE LOCAL FIRESTONE DEALER. THE FIRESTONE DEALER SAID THERE WAS A HOLE BETWEEN THE TREAD AND THE SIDEWALL AND THEREFORE IT COULDN'T BE FIXED. THEY (FIRESTONE) TOLD ME THE TIRE WAS NOT ON THE RECALL LIST SO THEY WOULDN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I WENT TO THE FORD DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME THE SAME THING. LATER I SAW A REPORT ON CHANNEL 2 IN LOS ANGELES ABOUT YET ANOTHER FIRESTONE FAILURE AND THE PICTURE OF THE HOLE IN THE TIRE THEY HAD ON TV LOOKED EXACTLY LIKE THE HOLE IN MY 17" TIRE. I AM SUSPICIOUS THAT ANYTHING ON THE ROAD PUNCTURED MY TIRE BUT FEEL LIKE IT WAS THE START OF A BIG PROBLEM WITH THE 17" WILDERNESS AT TIRES. I BOUGHT A GOODYEAR TIRE FOR MY SPARE AND TODAY I ORDERED FOUR MICHELIN TIRES. YOU NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT ALL WILDERNESS AT TIRES BEFORE MORE PEOPLE GET INJURED OR KILLED. FORD AND FIRESTONE SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THIS MESS. I AM SORRY I PAID $42,000 FOR A BRAND NEW EXPEDITION AND LESS THAN 7 WEEKS LATER HAVE TO SPEND OVER EIGHT HUNDRED DOLLARS ON REPLACEMENT TIRES JUST TO FEEL SAFE. THIS TIRE IS NOT A PART OF THE NATIONAL RECALL, HOWEVER, THE TIRE WAS BEGINNING TO SEPARATE AND THE LOCAL FIRESTONE DISTRIBUTOR REPLACED THE TIRE UNDER THE "WARRANTY". I WANTED TO INFORM YOU OF THE FAILURE OF THIS MODEL/SIZE OF THE FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT BRAND.( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: P25570RR16 )
SUNROOF ASSEMBLY BROKE IN THE OPEN POSITION. DEALER RECEIVED VEHICLE FOR REPAIR ON 8/21/00. ON 8/24/00, REPLACEMENT PART ARRIVED AT DEALER IN A DAMAGED CONDITION. SERVICE TECHINICIAN STATED IT WAS COMMON FOR FORD TO KNOWINGLY SHIP DEFECTIVE PARTS WHEN INVENTORY OF 1ST QUALITY PARTS IS DEPLETED. THIS PRACTICE WOULD DEMONSTRATE TIMELY DELIVERY OF REPLACEMENT PARTS TO THOSE WHO REVIEW SHIPPING RESPONSE TIME. SECOND REPLACEMENT SUNROOF ASSEMBLY ARRIVES AT DEALER APPROXIMATELY 8/28. IT IS ALSO DEFECTIVE. THIRD REPLACEMENT SUNROOF ASSEMBLY UNAVAILABLE AT THIS TIME. FORD NATIONAL RELATIONSHIP CENTER ADVISES ME THAT PART IS ON "NATIONAL BACKORDER" AND CAN GIVE NO PROMISE DATE FOR AVAILABILITY. ALSO ADVISED THAT FORD ENGINEERING HAS BEEN NOTIFIED OF THIS PARTS SHORTAGE. SPOKE TO DEALER THIS AFTERNOON (9/6/00) AND THEY HAVE NO INFORMATION AS TO WHEN PART MIGHT BECOME AVAILABLE. THE 2000 MODEL YEAR WAS THE FIRST YEAR THAT FACTORY INSTALLED SUNROOFS WERE AVAILABLE ON EXPEDITION EQUIPPED WITH REAR A/C VENTS. ONE COULD CONCLUDE FROM THE "NATIONAL BACKORDER" SITUATION THAT THERE IS AN ENGINEERING DEFECT WITH THE SUNROOF ASSEMBLY THAT I WOULD LIKE THE NHTSA TO INVESTIGATE AND/OR PUBLICIZE. I'D LIKE TO KNOW HOW MANY OTHER EXPEDITION OWNERS HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO USE THEIR VEHICLES WHILE WAITING FOR PARTS FOR OVER 19 DAYS. THANK YOU. REX DYER

ANYTHING LEES SEEMS TO BE AN ATTEMPT BY A MAJOR BUSINESS TO PACIFY WASHINGTON AT THE EXPENSE OF THE CONSUMER. PLEASE ENCOURAGE FIRESTONE AND FORD TO RECONSIDER THIS RECALL. WITHIN THE FIRST MONTH, I NOTICED THAT THE STEERING IS VERY UNSTABLE. WE HAVE TAKEN IN BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP SEVERAL TIMES AND YET THEY HAVE NOT CORRECTED THE PROBLEM. THEY HAVE ADJUSTED THE RIDE HEIGHT TWICE, SET THE ALIGNMENT, INSTALLED NEW STEERING GEAR, IDLER ARM (DID THIS TWICE), PITMAN ARM, AND CHAMBER/CASTER KIT ALONG WITH OTHER CORRECTIONS. JUST THE OTHER DAY, WE WERE ON THE FREEWAY AND FELT THE VEHICLE LOSING CONTROL. IN FACT, WHEN WE TOOK IT FOR A TEST DRIVE WITH ONE OF THE TECHNICIAN AT THE DEALERSHIP, THE VEHICLE JUMPED OVER TWO LANES. THIS VEHICLE IS VERY DANGEROUS AND IF YOU CAN PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION.*AK
I EXPERIENCED AN ABNORMAL SIDEWALL BLOW-OUT ON A TIRE WITH LESS THEN 10,000 MILES ON IT. THE BLOW OUT CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE RIM AND HUB OF THE WHEEL. I AM GREATLY CONCERNED THAT I MAY HAVE THE SAME EXPERIENCE SOON WITH THE OTHER FOUR TIRES. I CONTACTED GENERAL TIRES AND THEY WANT ME TO SENT THE TIRE BACK EAST AND WAIT TO GET SOMETHING DONE. THE NOW TIRE, RIM AND HUB CAP COST ME 325.00 OUT OF MY OWN POCKET AND I AM GOING TO HAVE TO WAIT TO GET IT FROM DETROIT ON SPECIAL ORDER. I WOULD LIKE THE DOT TO INSPECT THE TIRE PRIOR TO RELEASING IT BACK TO GENERAL TO DETERMINE IF A RECALL SHOULD BE ESTABLISHED.
