I OWN A 2000 FORD EXPEDITION WITH A 5.4L ENGINE. I HAD HEARD OF THE PROBLEM WITH THESE ENGINES BLOWING SPARK PLUGS OUT OF THE PASSENGER SIDE HEAD. I HAD ALL OF THE SPARK PLUGS REPLACED IN JANUARY 2005 BY A FORD DEALER TO PREVENT A SPARK PLUG FROM INVOLUNTARILY REMOVING ITSELF FROM MY ENGINE. ON JANUARY 4TH, 2006 A SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT OF THE ENGINE'S HEAD ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. MY WIFE WAS TURNING ONTO THE HIGHWAY AT THE TIME. AFTER CONTACTING FORD AND MY FORD DEALER, I REALIZED THAT FORD HAS NOT TAKEN OWNERSHIP OF THIS WELL KNOWN PROBLEM. I HAVE REPLACED MY ENGINE WITH A USED ENGINE THAT HAS LOWER MILES. *NM
IN EARLY JAN 2006, WE HAVE A POPPING SOUND AND MOVEMENT IN THE STEERING WHEEL OF OUR 2000 EXPEDITION. WE COULD FEEL IT MOVING IN THE STEERING WHEN DRIVING AND WERE CONCERNED. WE HAVE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON OUR EXPEDITION SO WE TOOK IT TO GERMAIN FORD IN COLUMBUS, OHIO. THEY SAID THE LEFT FRONT STABILIZER LINK BOLT HAD BROKE IN HALF AND THE STABILIZER BAR WAS SLIPPING ON AND OFF CAUSING THE MOVEMENT AND SOUND. THEY TOLD ME THIS WAS NOT A WARRANTY ITEM. MY EXPEDITION HAS ONLY 51,000 MILES AND IS DRIVEN BY MY WIFE TO WORK. AT THE SAME TIME THE DEALER TOLD ME BY BALL JOINTS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I SAID HOW CAN A STEEL BOLT IN THE STEERING LINKAGE ACTUALLY BRAKE AND NOT BE COVERED? I ASKED FOR THE SERVICE MGR AND HE ACTUALLY SAID TO ME "THEY DON'T MAKE THINGS LIKE THEY USE TO". I THEN RECALLED A SERVICE NOTICE SOME TIME BACK ABOUT SOMETHING IN THE FRONT END OF EXPEDITIONS SO I LOOKED THROUGH MY FILES. SURE ENOUGH, FORD SENT OUT A SERVICE BULLETIN IN 6-04 "TITLED TIE ROD INSPECTION PROCEDURE". WHILE THE SERVICE BULLETIN COVERS A COUPLE ITEMS IT BELIEVE IT SHOWS FORD KNEW THEY HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE FRONT ENDS AND SENT OUT A SERVICE NOTICE TO EXCUSE THEMSELVES AND TO AVOID PAYING FOR REPAIRS. WHEN THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THEY WOULD NOT COVER, I CALLED THE WARRANTY HOTLINE. THE REPRESENTATIVE TOLD ME "BALL JOINTS ARE WEARING OUT SOONER THEN THEY WOULD EXPECT" BUT IT WAS NOT A WARRANTY ITEM SO I HAD TO GET THOSE REPAIRED AS WELL. IN SUMMARY, I BELIEVE THE BOLT BREAKING COULD BE A SAFETY ISSUE AND THAT FOR A CUSTOMER TO SPEND $800 TO REPLACE A BROKEN BOLT IN THE FRONT LINKAGE AND BALL JOINTS ON AN EXCELLENT CONDITION VEHICLE WITH ONLY 51,000 MILES IS OUTRAGEOUS. I AM GUESSING OTHER EXPEDITION OWNERS ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM AND WOULD LIKE TO FILE A COMPLAINT FOR GETTING FORD TO REIMBURSE THE $800 I HAD TO SPEND IN REPAIR. *JB
DT: CONTACT STATED WHENEVER IT RAINED 2000, FORD, EXPEDITION LEAKED RAIN WATER. THE RAIN LEAKED IN ON RIGHT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE AROUND THE BOTTOM OF THE WINDSHIELD ABOVE THE DRIVER'S DASHBOARD. THE LEAK SHUT OFF THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. THIS WAS OBSERVED ON JANUARY 2, 2006. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP, WHERE THE CONTACT WAS TOLD BY THE MECHANIC THAT THIS WAS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT.*AK
WATER LEAKAGE DOING DAMAGE TO THE GEM MODULE AND JUNCTION BOX. DEALERSHIP ADVISED ME THE LEAKAGE WAS FROM THE WINDSHIELD AREA. VEHICLE HAS A "NEW" WINDSHELD AND THE DAMAGED AREA HAD "OLD" RUSTY DAMAGE. BOTH ELECTRONIC ITEMS WERE REPLACED AT THE EXPENSE OF $730.11 (FORD DEALERSHIP). *NM
WINDSHIELD LEAKING WATER WHICH BLEW OUT FUSE BOX AND GEM CAUSING ERRATIC BEHAVIOR IN WINDSHIELD WIPERS, RADIO, HEATER, AIR CONDITIONER, OVERDRIVE, TRANSMISSION, SPEEDOMETER, ODOMETER, RPM GAUGE, AND IT ALSO LED TO OUR PCM HAVING TO BE REPLACED. REPLACED WINDSHIELD, FUSE BOX, GEM, PCM. COST US 1700.00 DOLLARS. TWO WEEKS LATER AFTER A RAINY NIGHT IT IS AT THE DEALER AGAIN. *NM
IT STARTED LAST WINTER THE WIPERS WOULD FAIL WHEN IT RAINED AND THEN WE CAME OUT AND THE RADIO AND DASH WAS ON AND THE KEYS WERE NO WHERE NEAR THE IGNITION. NOW AFTER THE LAST RAIN MY HUSBAND TURNED ON THE HEADLIGHTS AND MY CAR TRIED TO TURN OVER!!! WHAT NEXT, WE ARE NOT SURE HOW TO CORRECT IT BUT IM AFRAID TO DRIVE IT. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE WIPERS FAIL AND I HAVE NO VISIBILITY. IT IS A 2000 FORD EXPEDITION, FORD REALLY NEEDS A RECALL THIS IS DANGEROUS. *JB
WHEN IT RAINED OR SNOWED WINDSHIELD WOULD LEAK WATER ON TO FUSE BOX CAUSING ACCESSORIES SUCH AS THE BLOWER, ODOMETER AND RADIO TO WORK WHEN CAR WAS NOT STARTED. CAR WOULD ALSO INTERMITTENTLY NOT START. *JB
DT: THE SEAT BELTS, SHOULDER AND LAP BELTS OF THE THIRD ROW ON 2000 FORD EXPEDITION CONTINUOUSLY RETRACTED AND LOCKED ON THE CONTACT'S DAUGHTER. THE VEHICLE WAS RUNNING AT THE TIME. THE SEAT BELT WAS SO TIGHT IT HAD TO BE CUT SO THAT THE CONTACT'S COULD GET OUT OF THE CAR.*AK
DETAILS: THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM CAME ON WHEN THERE WAS NO KEY IN THE IGNITION. THE RADIO AND AIR CONDITIONER WERE ALSO ON. THE LIGHTS CAME ON AND THE EXPEDITION WAS TRYING TO START ITSELF. IT CONTINUED ALL NIGHT AND THE NEXT DAY, THE POLICE WERE CALLED AND LOOKED AT IT, AND THEY SAID NO TAMPERING WAS DONE. THE BATTERY FINALLY DIED AND I HAD TO BUY A NEW BATTERY. MY EXPEDITION IS CURRENTLY AT MULLINEX FORD IN APOPKA, FL. THEY ARE STILL TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT HAPPENED. I FOUND MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME OCCURRENCE, PROBLEMS WITH ELECTRICAL DUE TO A LEAKY WINDSHIELD. I FEEL THAT THIS IS A DEFECT AND FORD SHOULD HELP ME WITH THE COST OF THIS REPAIR. I DON'T MIND PAYING FOR REPAIRS IF THEY ARE WITHIN NORMAL LIMITS, BUT DUE TO ALL THE OTHER COMPLAINTS AND SERVICE BULLETINS I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A NORMAL CAR REPAIR. RECALL DATE: MAY 13, 1998 COMPONENT: WHEELS:LUGS/NUTS/BOLTS POTENTIAL UNITS AFFECTED: 1520000 SUMMARY: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MULTI-PURPOSE VEHICLES AND LIGHT DUTY PICKUP TRUCKS. THE LUG NUTS ON THESE VEHICLES MAY NOT CREATE SUFFICIENT CLAMP LOAD ALLOWING WHEEL MOVEMENT IN RELATION TO THE HUB/ROTOR MOUNTING SURFACE. CONSEQUENCE: THIS CAN RESULT IN THE LOOSENING OF LUG NUTS, STUD FATIGUE FAILURE, AND THE POTENTIAL FOR A WHEEL SEPARATION FROM THE VEHICLE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH. REMEDY: OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLES WILL BE RECEIVING TWO NOTIFICATIONS. THE FIRST NOTIFICATION, WHICH BEGAN IN MAY 1998, WILL PROVIDE AN INTERIM REPAIR PROCEDURE UNTIL PARTS BECOME AVAILABLE. THIS INTERIM PROCEDURE CAN BE COMPLETED BY OWNERS OR THEIR DEALERS. IT SPECIFIES THAT THE LUG NUT TORQUE MUST BE VERIFIED TO BE 100 LBS. THEN THE LUG NUTS NEED TO BE TIGHTENED AN ADDITIONAL 1/8 TO 1/4 TURN MORE. THERE WILL BE A SECOND OWNER NOTIFICATION, WHICH IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN JULY 20, 1998, UNDER WHICH DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE WHEEL STUDS AND REPLACE THE WHEEL LUG NUTS. NOTES: FORD MOTOR COMPANY. *JB
DT: THE CONTACT STATES THERE IS RECALL ON THE VEHICLE CONCERNING THE VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL: CRUISE CONTROL. THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID # IS 05V017000. THE PARTS NEEDED TO REPAIR THEIR VEHICLE WAS NOT AVAILABLE AT THEIR LOCAL DEALERSHIP. THE CONSUMER HAS SPOKEN TO THE MANUFACTURER WHO HAS CONFIRMED THE PARTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME. *JB
I RECEIVED INFO FROM NHTSA THAT THERE ARE PERFORMANCE ISSUES REGARDING MY FORD EXPEDITION. THESE INCLUDE THE FAILURE OF REAR WINDSHIELD WIPER TO WORK AND FAILURE OF RADIO LIGHTS. *NM
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 FORD EXPEDITION. OCCASIONALLY IN COLD, SNOWY, OR RAINY CONDITIONS, THE VEHICLE WOULD EXPERIENCE ELECTRICAL FAILURE. THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS WOULD NOT WORK, THE RADIO WOULD TURN ON AND OFF RANDOMLY, AND THE HEADLIGHTS FLASHED ON AND OFF. THE CONTACT NEEDED TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY IN ORDER TO SHUT OFF THE HEADLIGHTS. THE DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 45,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 60,000.
RECURRING PROBLEM WITH WATER LEAK BEHIND DASH. THIS CAUSES VARIOUS ELECTRICAL MALFUNCTIONS, I.E. WIPERS AND RADIO DON'T WORK OR WINDOWS AND BRAKE SAFETY SWITCH (CAN'T SHIFT OUT OF PARK), ETC... RELAY(S) CLICKING UNDER DASH. DEALER NOTES FUSE BOX AND CONNECTOR RUSTED DUE TO REPEATED EVENTS. $600 REPAIR. *NM
I HAVE A 2000 FORD EXPEDITION. FOR SOME REASON THE CHILD SAFETY LOCKS ON THE BACK DOORS HAVE STARTED LOCKING THEMSELVES EVERY TIME THE DOORS ARE CLOSED. I HAVE CHECKED SOME CHAT ROOMS A FOUND THAT THIS SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM THAT ALOT OF PEOPLE ARE HAVING. MY QUESTION IS , SHOULD FORD BE LIABLE FOR THE REPAIR? FORDS ESTIMATE FOR THE REPAIR IS 450.00. *NM
CHRONIC WINDSHIELD LEAK, DRIVERS SIDE. COMPLAINED TO DEALER (3/14/05 & 4/4/05) - SEAL SUPPOSEDLY REPAIRED? STILL CONTINUED TO LEAK. SEVERE RUSTING UNDER DASH AREA. STARTED HAVING ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS (FAN BLOWER AND COURTESY LIGHTS WOULD COME ON BY THEMSELVES WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS OFF AND PARKED AT NIGHT). DEALER CLAIMED FUSE BLOCK AND GEM MODULE WERE DAMAGED DUE TO THE WATER LEAK (A DEFECT). THE SAME LEAK WE HAD BEEN CONTINUALLY COMPLAINING ABOUT. THE WINDSHIELD, WINDSHIELD SEAL, FUSE BLOCK AND GEM WERE ALL REPLACED. THE INTERIOR RUSTING WAS NOT AND CANNOT EASILY BE FIXED. ALL THIS BECAUSE OF A FORD DEFECT. THE TOTAL REPAIR WAS OVER $1,000. *JB
I NOTICED A SMALL AMOUNT OF FLUID ON MY DRIVEWAY AT THE LEFT REAR OF MY 2000 EXPEDITION WHICH ONLY HAS 28,140 MILES. THE DEALER HAS INFORMED ME THAT THE PLASTIC GAS TANK IS LEAKING AT THE SEAMS WHERE IT IS MOLDED TOGETHER. I CONTACTED FORD MOTOR COMPANY AND THEIR RESPONSE IS THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO SINCE THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY. *JB
I WAS DRIVING HOME AFTER WORK TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH. AN ONCOMING CHEVROLET PICK UP TRUCK MADE A LEFT HAND TURN INTO MY PATH OF TRAVEL. I HIT THE TRUCK BROAD SIDE ON THE PASSENGER SIDE SPINNING HIM INTO A 3RD VEHICLE. UPON IMPACT THERE WAS NO DEPLOYMENT OF THE AIRBAGS ON THE DRIVER OR PASSENGER SIDE. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TOTALED, THEREFORE NO REPAIRS. *JB

DT: CONTACT OWNS A 2000 FORD EXPEDITION EDDIE BAUER EDITION) AND IT CAUGHT ON FIRE ON 8-19-05 IN THE DRIVEWAY. SHE REPORTED OF HAVING NO PROBLEMS PRIOR TO THIS. THE FIRE DEPTARTMENT WAS CALLED, AND THEY DETERMINED THAT THE FIRE ORIGINATED UNDER THE HOOD. THE VEHICLE WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED. SHE HAS NOT YET TALKED TO FORD. THE VEHICLE HAS CRUISE CONTROL. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT TOLD HER THERE WAS A RECALL 05V017000. SHE WAS NOT THE ORIGINAL OWNER, AND S NEVER RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE. *AK
FORD EXPEDITION WAS SITTING IN CARPORT. JUST RETURNED FROM THE DOCTORS OFFICE ABOUT 5:15 PM. ABOUT 6:00 MY SON HAYDEN WAS GOING OUT TO FEED THE ANIMALS AND NOTICED THAT BLACK SMOKE WAS COMMING FROM THE CAR. HE SCREEMED AND AT THAT POINT I RAN TO THE KITCHEN TO FIND OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. HE POINTED OUT THE SMOKE AND I RAN TO THE BEDROOM TO GET THE KEYS TO THE CAR AND HAD MY SONN CALL 911. I THEN RAN OUT THE DOOR AND WAS GOING TO TRY AND MOVE THE CAR AWAY FROM THE HOUSE. BY THE TIME I COULD GET CLOSE TO THE CAR FLAMES STARTED TO APPEAR ON DRIVERS TO MIDDLE OF THE CAR BETWEEN THE HOOD AND WINDSHIELD. THE BLACK SMOKE BEGAN TO THICKED AND I COULD SEE THE PAINT BUBBLES IN THE HOOD. I ATTEMPTED TO OPEN THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR, BUT IT WAS TOO HOT AND MY SON AND THE 911 OPERATOR WERE TELLING ME TO GET AWAY FROM IT. AT THAT POINT I COULD DO NOTHING BUT WATCH AS MY CAR WAS BURNING AND THEN IT STARTED TO CATCH THE HOUSE ON FIRE AS WELL. AS WE WAITED FOR THE FIRE DEPARTMENT TO ARRIVE ALL WE COULD DO IS WATCH CAR EXPLODE SEVERAL TIMES AND CAUSE SEVRE DAMAGE TO OUR HOUSE. FORD MOTOR WILL BE AT THE HOUSE MONDAY AUG. 22, 2005 TO REVIEW THIS CASE. EXPERTS IN THE AREA ARE TELLING US THAT THIS WAS CAUSED BY A FAULTY CURISE CONTROL SWITCH AND FORD, TI AND DUPONT ALL KNOW ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND ARE DOING NOTHING ABOUT IT. I WILL HOWEVER NOT STAND BY AND WATCH SINCE WE WERE LUCKY AND NO LIVES WERE LOST,
FORD HAS RECOGNIZED A LOSS-OF-POWER PROBLEM WITH ITS EXPEDITION AND F-150 MODELS IN THE 2000-02 MODEL YEARS WITH THE 5.4 L. ENGINE. SIMPLY PUT, IN AMBIENT TEMPERATURES OVER 100 DEGREES F, THE ENGINE COMPUTER WILL ALTER TIMING (IN A MISGUIDED ATTEMPT TO REDUCE ENGINE TEMPERATURE) WHICH RADICALLY REDUCES ENGINE POWER. FORD HAS A PURPORTED "FIX" UNDER ITS TECH BULLETIN NO. 02-12-3, DATED 06/24/02, AUTHORIZING REPROGRAMMING OF THE COMPUTER AND INSTALLATION OF SOME BODY PLUGS. PROBLEM IS THAT THE PROBLEM REMAINS AFTER THE TECH BULLETIN WORK IS PERFORMED. ON MY 2000 EXPEDITION, I CONTINUE TO EXPERIENCE POWER LOSS OF ROUGHLY 30% IN STOP/GO DRIVING AND THE HOT SUMMER TEMPERATURES IN THE PHOENIX AREA. THIS POSES AN EXTREME RISK IN CITY TRAFFIC, SUCH AS WHEN YOU ATTEMPT TO CLEAR AN INTERSECTION OR AVOID AN ACCIDENT. I'VE HAD SEVERAL CLOSE CALLS THIS SUMMER, "POST-FIX", WHEN TEMPERATURES HOVER AROUND 100 DEGREES--I HIT THE GAS, AND BARELY MOVE. *NM
ON AUGUST 7, 2005, MY WIFE, 3 YEAR OLD SON AND I DROVE OUR 2000 FORD EXPEDITION UP TO WISCONSIN TO MY UNCLE'S LAKE COTTAGE. THE TRIP WAS AROUND 120 MILES ONE WAY. WE DROVE HOME, ANOTHER 120 MILES, AND PARKED THE EXPEDITION IN OUR GARAGE ABOUT 7:30 PM. IT HAD RUN FLAWLESSLY, AND THERE WERE NO PROBLEMS EVIDENT WITH THE VEHICLE. AT ABOUT 2:30 AM ON AUGUST 8, MY WIFE AND I AWOKE TO THE SOUND OF OUR SMOKE DETECTORS IN OUR HOUSE, AND THE HOUSE WAS FILLED WITH SMOKE. MY WIFE RAN AHEAD OF ME OUT OF THE HOUSE, AND I CRAWLED INTO OUR SON'S ROOM DOWN THE HALL. HE WAS STILL ASLEEP, AND I REACHED UP, FELT HIS BODY, GRABBED HIM AND TORE DOWN THE STAIRS OUT THE FRONT DOOR. OUR NEIGHBORS WERE ALREADY OUTSIDE AS THEY HAD HEARD CRACKLING AND BANGING FROM THE GARAGE- IT WAS TOTALLY SWALLOWED BY FLAMES. I HAD A '98 F-150 4X4 THAT WAS PARKED OUTSIDE THE GARAGE, AND WHEN THE GARAGE DOOR FELL AND THE WHOLE HOUSE WENT UP IN FLAMES, IT CAUGHT ON FIRE TOO AND WAS TOTALED. THE FIRE DEPARTMENTS FROM 5 TOWNS ALL SHOWED UP AND PUT THE FIRE OUT. BY THE TIME THEY ARRIVED, OUR HOUSE AND BOTH VEHICLES WERE COMPLETELY DESTROYED, AND THE EAST SIDE OF OUR NEIGHBOR'S HOUSE HAD THE SIDING, WINDOWS AND ROOFING BURNED OFF.....THAT HOUSE IS OVER 75 FEET AWAY FROM OURS. MY WIFE, MY SON, OUR DOG, AND I ALL GOT OUT SAFE - WE LOST OUR FAMILY CAT. WE LOST NEARLY EVERY SINGLE MATERIAL POSSESSION WE OWN IN THIS FIRE....AND FURTHER INVESTIGATION BY OUR INSURANCE COMPANIES AND FORD HAVE DEEMED IT WAS INDEED THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH THAT STARTED THE FIRE. WE NOW ARE LIVING IN A RENTAL HOUSE WAITING FOR OUR BURNED HOUSE TO BE REBUILT....IT HAS BEEN NEARLY 4 MONTHS AND NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE DUE TO PERMIT COMPLICATIONS. *JB
I FIRST NOTICED A PROBLEM WITH MY WINDSHIELD WIPERS, THEY WOULD NOT COME ON OR JUST STOP RUNNING THEN THEY STARTED NOT TURNING OFF I HAD TO PULL THE FUSE TO TURN THE WIPERS ON AND OFF. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT WITH FORD TO HAVE THE PROBLEM LOOKED AT AND WAS ADVISED THAT THE CONTROL SWITCH WAS BAD AND WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED ALSO DURING THE SAME TIME PERIOD AND SAME APPOINTMENT I HAD TO HAVE A BRAKE SENSOR REPLACED. I STARTED NOTICING ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS LIKE THE RADIO WOULD TURN OFF WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN OUT OF PARK AND SOME TIMES IT WOULD TURN OFF WHEN YOU WERE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND TURN BACK ON BY ITS SELF. THERE HAVE BEEN TIMES WHEN I WOULD BE LEAVING WORK AND TRY TO USE THE REMOTE TO UNLOCK THE DOORS AND IT WOULD NOT WORK AND WHEN I USE THE KEY TO OPEN THE DOOR THE RADIO WOULD BE ON AND THE AC WOULD BE BLOWING AIR. I HAVE SINCE DISCOVERED THAT THE WINDSHIELD IS LEAKING AND AFTER A RAIN WAS WHEN THE PROBLEM WOULD OCCUR MOSTLY. I MADE ANOTHER APPOINTMENT AND ADVISED FORD WHAT WAS HAPPENING AND I WAS ADVISED THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM IN THE FORD EXPEDITION AND FORD F150. I WAS ADVISED THAT THE SEAL ON THE WINDSHIELD OVER TIME SEPARATES FROM THE FRAME AND CAUSES THE LEAK. I SAID THEN THIS IS A DEFECT AND WAS ADVISED NO ITS NOT ITS JUST SOMETHING THAT HAPPENS. MY EXPEDITION IS ONLY 5 YEARS OLD ITS A 2000 IN GREAT CONDITION AND HAD BEEN GARAGE KEPT FOR THE PAST 4 YEARS. NOW I AM OUT $1043.69 JUST TO HAVE THE WINDSHIELD REPLACED AND THE GM MODULE AND FUSE BOX REPLACED AS WELL. *JB

TRAVELING @ 65 MPH ON I-580 IN RICHMOND, CALIFORNIA, MY SPARE TIRE FELL FROM ITS CABLE HELD BRACKET BELOW THE FRAME WHERE IT IS SECURED ON THE VEHICLE, BOUNCED ON THE GROUND, THEN STRUCK THE BOTTOM OF THE REAR BUMPER, WHICH WEDGED THE TIRE BETWEEN THE BUMPER AND GROUND, CAUSING THE REAR OF THE SUV TO CATAPULT OFF THE GROUND. THE FORCE AND PRESSURE ON THE TIRE BEING WEDGED BETWEEN THE VEHICLE AND THE GROUND CAUSED THE TIRE TO POP FROM BEHIND THE VEHICLE AND PROCEED ACROSS THREE LANES OF TRAFFIC AT A HIGH SPEED, EVENTUALLY ENDING UP IN THE CENTER DIVIDER OF THE FREEWAY. I WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL, BUT BARELY. THERE IS DAMAGE TO THE UNDERCARRIAGE OF THE TRUCK AT THE REAR BUMPER, PLUS THE STRESS AND DIFFICULTY OF KEEPING THE TRUCK IN A STRAIGHT LINE WHILE TRYING TO COME TO A STOP AFTER THE REAR TIRES WERE LIFTED OFF THE GROUND APPROX. 6-8". THE PRESS FITTTING ON THE CABLE THAT HOLDS THE SPARE TIRE IN PLACE SEPARATED CLEANLY FROM THE CABLE. THE CABLE DID NOT BREAK OR FRAY, JUST THE PRESS- FITTED COUPLING CAME LOOSE AND SEPARATED FROM THE CABLE, ALLOWING THE SPARE TIRE TO FALL TO THE GROUND. THIS SPARE TIRE HAS NEVER BEEN REMOVED FROM THE SPARE POSITION SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NEW, AND OF COURSE,IS THE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT SPARE TIRE THAT COMES FROM THE FACTORY, AND THE VEHICLE IS MAINTAINED TO FACTORY SPECS, NO MODIFICATIONS, NO ALTERATIONS, ALL ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT. I SECURED THE PARTS THAT I COULD FIND FROM THE HIGHWAY. I CONTACTED THE LOCAL FORD DEALER, MICHAEL STEAD FORD, OF SAN RAFAEL, ON JULY 13TH AND ORDERED A REPLACEMENT SPARE TIRE WINCH AND CABLE SET FOR THE EXPEDITION. THE PART ARRIVED YESTERDAY AND WAS INSTALLED. I DO HAVE THE OLD WINCH, CABLE, AND CLAMP THAT HOLDS THE SPARE TIRE IN PLACE. CERTAINLY THERE MUST BE A BETTER AND MORE SECURE WAY TO SECURE THE CABLE TO THE FITTING THAT SUPPROTS THE SPARE TIRE UNDER THE CAR THEN THIS SMALL FITTED UNIT THAT IN MY CASE CAME LOOSE.
DT: CONSUMER STATES THAT WHEN DRIVING 45-50 MPH AND THE TIE ROD BROKE ON THE DRIVER SIDE FRONT. WHEN THE CONSUMER SPOKE TO FORD, THEY STATED IT HAPPENS QUITE OFTEN WITH THAT VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED AT FORD 7 MONTHS AGO. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A GARAGE. THERE WAS NO WARNING, IT JUST HAPPENED. THIS HAPPENED JULY 9, 2005 AT 5:30 PM. THE VEHICLE NEEDS TO BE REALIGNED AND THE OTHER TIE ROD NEED TO BE CHECKED. THE VEHICLE WAS UNSTEERABLE AND IT PULLED ABOUT 3 FEET TO THE RIGHT. AT THAT TIME, THE CONSUMER STOPPED THE VEHICLE. *NM

CURRENTLY, DEALER HAD VEHICLE AND THEY WERE REPLACING GM MODULE. CONSUMER WAS CONCERNED BECAUSE ALL OF THE PROBLEMS WERE ELECTRICAL. STOPPED IMMEDIATELY, AND HAD VEHICLE TOWED TO FIRESTONE DEALER ,WHO INFORMED CONSUMER THE SPARK PLUGS BLEW OFF THE CYLINDER. THE THREADING AROUND THE SPARK PLUG WAS TOO THIN, THIS HAD A DEFECT. THEN, HAD TOWED TO FORD DEALER WHERE HAS A PREMIUM WARRANTY, BUT THIS WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. NO REPAIRS AS OF YET, IT IS STILL AT THE DEALER WITH OVER $3,000 WORTH DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE. *AK
LAST MONTH, MY 2000 FORD EXPEDITION CAUGHT ON FIRE IN MY DRIVEWAY AFTER SITTING FOR ABOUT 3 HOURS. THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT BURST INTO FLAMES AND MELTED EVERY PLASTIC AND RUBBER COMPONENT INSIDE, INCLUDING THE DRIVER-SIDE FRONT TIRE. PURCHASED 2000 FORD EXPEDITION-NEW - AT 33,000 THE TRANSMISSION STARTED SLIPPING FROM 1ST-2ND. TOOK VEHICLE IN TO LOCAL DEALER WAS REBUILT UNDER WARRENTY. TOOK VEHICLE IN AT 58,000MI. FOR THE 60,000 MILE SERVICE (PRE-EMPTING A VACATION ROAD TRIP) WHILE ON THE TRIP THE TRANSMISSION WENT COMPLETELY OUT--ONLY 25,000 MILES ON THE RE-BUILT TRANNY. THE VEHICLE HAD 3 CHILDREN--1 WITH AUTISM AND THE OTHER A NEWBORN. THE VEHICLE HAD DIED IN AN INTERSECTION OF AN EMERGENCY ROOM AND BUSY STREET. I COULD ONLY GO IN REVERSE IN ORDER TO GET OUT OF THE INTERSECTION LEAVING ME STRANDED IN A LEFT TURN LANE. I TRIED ALL GREERS FROM LOW ON UP AND TRIED TO ENGAGE ANY OF MY 4X4 CAPABILIIES WITHOUT ANYTHING. THE VEHICLE WAS PUSHED OUT THE INTERSECTION AND HAD TO BE TOWED TO A DEALERSHIP IN THAT TOWN VISITING. IT IS STILL PRESENTLY THERE COMING UP ON 14 DAYS. I WAS GIVEN A LONER CAR BY A FAMILY MEMBER IN ORDER TO GET BACK HOME WITH MY FMAILY. THE DEALERSHIP IT IS PRESENTLY AT HAS AGAIN REBUILT THE TRANNY-FREE OF CHARGE-DUE TO STILL BEING UNDER A 3YR/36,000 MI. WARRENTY THAT WAS PLACED ON THE 1ST REBUILT TRANNY. NOW I AM TOLD THAT ALMOST EVERYTHING INSIDE THE TRANNY WAS DESTROYED AND WAS EITHER REBUILT OR REPLACED. FORD FELT THAT IS WAS STILL CHEAPER TO REBUILD INSTEAD OF REPLACING WITH A NEW TRANNY. I AM NOW GIVEN A 12MON/12,000MILE WARRENTY ON THIS 2ND REBUILD. AT THIS POINT, MY AUTISTIC CHILD IS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE THOUGHT OF GETTING BACK IN THIS VEHICLE (MIND YOU I STILL DON'T HAVE IT YET), NOT ALONE THE SAFETY CONCERNS I HAVE WITH DRIVING THIS VEHICLE. THIS 2000 FORD EXPEDITION IS USED AS AN EMERGENCY RESPONSE VEHICLE OPERATED BY PARAMEDICS RESPONDING TO 911 CALLS FOR MEDICAL ASSISTANCE. DURING ROUTINE DRIVING, A PARAMEDIC REPORTED A SUDDEN GRINDING NOISE IN THE FRONT END. HE WAS RETURNING TO THE STATION WHEN THE FRONT RIGHT WHEEL (TIRE AND RIM) CAME OFF. ALL FIVE POSTS WERE SHEERED OFF. VEHICLE UNDERGOES RIGOROUS MAINTENANCE, AND NO PREVIOUS ISSUES WERE REPORTED.
ON MAY 28TH, 2005 I WAS PERFORMING A PRE-VACATION SAFETY INSPECTION OF MY 2000 FORD EXPEDITION WHEN I NOTICED THAT THE FRONT ANTI SWAY BAR ENDS WERE NOT CONNECTED TO ANYTHING ON MY VEHICLE. I CALLED SHAWNEE MISSION FORD IN SHAWNEE, KS FOR ADVICE. THEY DIRECTED ME TO BRING THE VEHICLE IN FOR IMMEDIATE REPAIR. AFTER ARRIVAL AT THE DEALER, I STAYED WITH THE MECHANIC TO OBSERVE REPAIRS. HE SHOWED ME TWO RUSTED AND BROKEN HALVES OF LINK THAT HAD SNAPPED IN TWO FROM CORROSION AND METAL FATIGUE. HE SAID THAT HE GETS SEVERAL OF THESE EACH WEEK ON F150S, EXPEDITIONS AND EXPLORERS. HE REFERRED TO IT AS A DESIGN FLAW THAT HAS BEEN RECTIFIED BY A RECALL ON THE EXPLORER WITH A LARGER OR REINFORCED LINK, BUT NOT ON THE EXPEDITION OR THE F150. I DECIDED THIS SHOULD BE REPORTED FOR TWO REASONS. FIRST, SOMEONE COULD BE INJURED OR HAVE THEIR VEHICLE DAMAGED BY THE BOTTOM HALF OF THESE LINKS FALLING OF ONTO THE ROADWAY. SECOND, I SUSPECT THE PREMATURE AND CHOPPY WEAR OF MY FRONT TIRES IS DIRECTLY ATTRIBUTABLE TO THIS DEFECT. SOMEONE EQUIPPED THIS VEHICLE WITH THAT ITEM FOR A REASON. IT ISN'T PERFORMING ITS INTENDED PURPOSE. IT SHOULD BE RECALLED AND FIXED WITH AN ACCEPTABLE AND SAFE PART.1 *JB
4 X 4 WARNING LIGHT ON DASH BOARD BEGAN FLASHING. ALL WHEEL DRIVE FAILED. THE FORD DEALER REPLACED THE GEM MODULE AND 4 X 4 SENSOR. I CALLED OTHER FORD DEALER'S TO DOUBLE CHECK THE FINDINGS OF THE DEALER I WAS WORKING WITH. ONE SERVICEMAN COMMENTED THAT THE ONLY WAY THE GEM MODULE CAN GO OUT IS TO GET IT WET. THIS IS DIFFICULT TO DO SINCE IT IS INSIDE THE DASH BOARD. I NOW SEE THERE ARE COMPLAINTS ABOUT LEAKY WINDSHIELDS IN EXPEDITIONS. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT WHAT SAFETY ISSUES MAY RESULT WHEN THE GEM MODULE FAILS, AND WHAT ELSE MIGHT FAIL IF THERE IS A LEAKY WINDSHIELD. IN MY CASE, THE ALL WHEEL DRIVE FAILED. THE OLD PART HAS BEEN DISCARDED.
CONSUMER STATES THE SUSPENSION ON THE FRONT END PASSENGERS SIDE FAILED. THE TIE ROD END BROKE AND THE WHEELS WERE UNCONTROLLABLE. WHEN THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED THERE WEREN'T ANY LIGHTS OR WARNINGS. SHE RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER FROM FORD IN FEBRUARY 2005 ABOUT THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH ON HER VEHICLE. SHE CALLED FORD 6 TIMES, THE LAST TIME WAS ON 5-11-2005. THEY RECORDED CONTACT'S INFORMATION AND TOLD HER THEY WILL PASS IT ON TO THE LEGAL DEPARTMENT . HOWEVER, THEY DID NOT GIVE CONTACT A TELEPHONE NUMBER TO THE LEGAL DEPARTMENT. THEY CLAIMED THAT SOMEONE WILL GET BACK TO CONTACT, WITHIN 3-4 BUSINESS DAYS. THUS FAR NO ONE CONTACTED HER. *AK

THE SPARK PLUG SUDDENLY BLEW OUT AND WAS ONLY ATTACHED BY A HANGING WIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALERSHIP WHO DETERMINED THE ENGINE REPAIR SHOULD BE PERFORMED.
WATER (RAIN) RUNNING INTO ELECTRICAL SYSTEM AND SHORTING OUT COMPONENTS. I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE ALL COIL PACKS AND STILL COUNTING. CONTACTED FORD TOO MANY TIMES.
THE PASSENGER SIDE TIE ROD BROKE AT 65 MPH, CAUSING CONSUMER TO STRIKE A BRIDGE. FORD SENT OUT LETTERS TO OWNERS OF THESE TYPE VEHICLES TELLING THEM IT IS ESSENTIAL TO HAVE THE STEERING AND FRONT SUSPENSION INCLUDING THE TIE RODS INSPECTED EVERY 15,000 MILES. PRIOR TO ACCIDENT BRAKES WERE REPLACED WITH NEW COMPONENTS AND A FULL SAFETY INSPECTION WAS PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE. *TT

OUR MECHANIC CANNOT REPLICATE THE LEAK AFTER MANY ATTEMPTS AND HE EVEN WENT TO A FORD DEALERSHIP FOR THEIR ASSISTANCE. THEY ALSO COULD NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. OUR TRUCK HAS BEEN TOWED NUMEROUS TIMES TO OUR MECHANIC DEAD ON ARRIVAL. THE TRUCK IS COMPLETELY UNRELIABLE IF IT RAINS. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM. WE HAVE SEEN DISCUSSIONS ABOUT IT ON VARIOUS WEBSITES. WE WROTE TO FORD AFTER THE FIRST OCCURRENCE BUT FORD SAID THEY WOULD NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR IT. OUR MECHANIC HAS BEEN EXTREMELY HELPFUL AND UNDERSTANDING ABOUT THIS, BUT AT SOME POINT, IF I WERE HIM, I WOULD CLOSE MY SHOP IF I SAW OUR TRUCK COMING ON THE BACK OF A TOW TRUCK ONE MORE TIME. *JB
2000 EXPEDITION, WHICH I'VE OWNED SINCE NEW AND NEVER BEEN DAMAGED IN AN ACCIDENT, ~53,000 MILES IS HAVING ELECTRICAL ISSUES THAT AT TIMES ARE SAFETY ISSUES AS WELL. STARTED WITH FRONT WIPERS RUNNING CONSTANTLY, NOW SOMETIMES THEY WORK SOMETIMES THEY DONT. RADIO DOES NOT WORK AT TIMES. ALL GAUGES GO TO THEIR EXTREME LIMIT, INCLUDING SPEEDOMETER. DEALER HAS IDENTIFIED A COMPUTER MODULE BEHIND THE DASH THAT HAS BEEN DAMAGED BY WATER. ACCORDING TO THE DEALER THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH EXPEDITIONS AND IS CAUSED BY WATER LEAKING THROUGH THE FRONT WINDOW AND DOWN ONTO THE MODULE. ONCE THE MODULE IS REPLACED A NEW WINDOW AND SEALANT IS RECOMMENDED. THIS VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT AND THE FRONT WINDOW IS ORIGINAL. THIS COULD LEAD TO SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUES WHEN THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER AND THE DRIVER IS UNABLE TO USE THE WIPERS. COULD THIS ELECTRICAL PROBLEM BE LINKED TO THE CURRENT RECALL FOR 2000 EXPEDITIONS WHERE THE CRUISE CONTROL IS SHORTING?
VEHICLE WAS PARKED FOR ABOUT THREE HOURS WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN IT CAUGHT ON FIRE ON ITS OWN. THIS SEEMED TO BE A SIMILAR PROBLEM TO THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH CATCHING FIRE.*AK
