The contact owns a 2018 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving 45 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power inadvertently. The contact was able to pull to the side of the road. The contact was able to restart the vehicle after several attempts; however, the vehicle sputtered while restarting. The contact was able to continue driving. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring while driving. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V392000 (Fuel System, Gasoline); however, the VIN was not included. Additionally, the dealer informed the contact that oil was leaking from the timing valve cover and the front struts. The dealer also informed the contact that the transmission lines were leaking. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 64,500.
Cam Phasers failing Rough running and poor acceleration Problem has been confirmed by a dealer Vehicle has not been inspected by manufacture, police or insurance No warning light on, but grinding when cold start. This is the second time it’s occurred! We had it fixed prior about 20,000 miles ago. I called Ford Customer service and they directed me to the NHTSA.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that when the vehicle was first started during a cold morning, there was an abnormal clanking sound coming from the engine compartment. The contact stated that once the vehicle had idled for several minutes, the abnormal sound stopped. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the cam phasers needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The contact researched online and related the failure to Customer Satisfaction Program Number: 21N03 Cam Phaser Replacement (Engine), but the contact was informed by the dealer that the vehicle was no longer covered under warranty. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000.
The transmission stopped working after hit 80k mileage
The Transmission is slow to respond leaving inhibited acceleration. Not being able to accelerate while pushing down on the gas pedal when entering the freeway is a major concern and could be costly to others life and mine. While making a turn during a green arrow, a collision is bound to happen. Dealer is currently reviewing vehicle. No warning lights for transmission present at time of transmission failures.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that when the vehicle was started, there was a grinding sound coming from the front of the vehicle. The contact stated that the sound was more evident at the initial start-up. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer who diagnosed that the cam phasers had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The contact was informed that the failure was a known failure. The manufacturer had been made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 46,000.
I've had a couple of issues with my expedition since day 1. When I click on my memory seat to adjust seat/mirror etc. the front mirrors (not the encasement) will turn in one direction and sit there and click until I manually adjust the mirror(s). Today is 10/24/23 and starting yesterday, I was in rush hour traffic and noticed my motor sounded different. Then while headed to work it just started jumping and popping in and out of gear. I am in stopped traffic at one minute and the next be going 70 mph then back to stuck in traffic. So, my fear is driving this thing and it totally failing and it causing a serious wreck to myself and others! This needs to be addressed or I will never own another Ford.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that on start-up there was a rattling sound coming from under the hood of the vehicle. The check engine warning light intermittently illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the timing chain and VCT actuator and solenoid 02 sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the vehicle was also diagnosed, and it was determined that the oxygen sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 107,762.
The transmission will drop to 1st gear from 3rd or 4th gear. The RPM’s will rev high, the vehicle will not accelerate. This is available for inspection if you’d like to see it. I was almost rear-end when I couldn’t get the vehicle to accelerate. Another time I was on the interstate and in 10th gear, I let off the accelerator pedal and the gear went to 9th gear, as I went to push back on the accelerator to speed up and the vehicle wouldn’t shift to 10th gear and again started to slow down, I immediately got over to head towards the side of the interstate. This is going to cause me to be rear-end if I can’t accelerate when I intend to accelerate. I can recreate this issue once the transmission is over 200 degrees (operating temperature). I have talked to several dealerships and transmission technicians. They believe the CDF Drum Clutch Hub bushing has slipped. The is a 2018 model, so this was BEFORE Ford Motor Company made the updated design to stop the bushing from slipping by create a “lip” to stop the bushing. This has not be officially inspected as most dealers are telling me 30-40 days and 7-12 weeks before they can even look at it. They say their transmission tech is booked way out. This makes me wonder why… upon my research these 10r80 transmissions have this problem. Ford even corrected the design (becuase obviously it was a faulty design, otherwise Ford wouldn’t have made this updated change). It does have a code saying “Engine Not in Park”. But displays no check engine light. It throws lights and warnings when it starts to rev high and says to “see manual”. Someone needs to do some research on these 10r80 tranmissions and Ford needs to correct this faulty design on models that have the bushing slipping. It’s not right that Ford corrected it for the latest models to only leave the older model customers high and dry and in the way of danger. Ford can make this corrective action, but what will it require from the public?
The auto stop/start feature fails to work properly and causes the vehicle engine to stop running while on the road. The warning message "AUTO START/STOP, SHIFT TO P THEN RESTART ENGINE" comes up and you have to put the vehicle in park then restart the engine. This has been confirmed by the dealer (wife was driving it with the tech) and we have to pay $550 plus a diagnosis fee of $150 to get them to resolve this safety issue. Our extended vehicle warranty coverage won't cover it because it's a valve and reprogramming issue, not a part replacement. There are several mentions of this on a google search for the problem, yet Ford isn't covering any of the repair for a known issue. The rep at the Ford dealer said there is even a techincal service bulletin about the issue. Complete failure of the company to resolve this safety issue and charge the consumer for this.
When car is stopped, the engine dies and it reads on screen “ place car in park to restart engine”. This is not the automatic stop/start. Car has died a handful of times when in stopped traffic or at red lights. Sometimes taking several seconds to get engine running again. Brand new battery. Herb Chambers Ford dealership used diagnostics on 9/29/23 and “did not find anything broken”.
My vehicle has been making a very loud rattling sound upon starting. I reached out to the Ford service department about this and they said the cam phaser is failing but the customer satisfaction program has expired and they will no longer cover it. I never received a letter from Ford regarding this customer satisfaction program (I hadn't moved since buying the car, so it wasn't an address problem); they blamed the DMV and said they are the ones that mail out the letters and don't know why I didn't receive it. They quoted me $3,300 to fix it. I obviously can't afford that so I took my vehicle back and continued to drive it. Today the check engine light came on and I noticed my vehicle is sluggish to accelerate. Upon researching cam phasers failing I found this: "You could also lose power suddenly while you are driving. This problem puts you at risk of an accident and exposes others on the road to a dangerous situation. ". I believe the cam phaser problems in the 2018-2020 Expeditions should be a recall. It is a safety issue.
Our 2018 Ford Expedition Max caught fire while on a test drive after repairs at Canby Ford. It completely caught fire and is a total loss. We were supposed to pick up the car an hour later. If our kids were in the car strapped into car seats, there may not have been enough time to get them out. They could have died. The mechanic who was driving saw the engine smoking and jumped out (he was at risk). The whole car was gone within 2-3 minutes. In my opinion it exploded as all the windows were blown out. The motor block melted, and the front end of the car is gone. There is a report with Canby Oregon Fire Department. Most people would assume it was overheating, get out and open the hood with their family still in the car. If that had happened people could have died. There were no check engine lights on when we took it to Ford. It was just close to the end of a warranty and there was an engine rattle we wanted fixed. Please come look at the car to investigate. It is at an independent insurance valuation company. I asked the manager of Canby Ford if he would report it to Ford Motor Company, he said no it would just go through their insurance. Ford needs to recall all of the expeditions so someone doesn't die in a fire. Ford already settled on the 2021 Ford Expedition and there are fires on older models and similar F150 Trucks. There are many reported fires without a recall. Please recall all the expeditions and investigate all the other Ford Vehicle fires swept under the rug. We don't want someone else to die due to a lack of action. The previous Ford Expedition settlement is not enough as it only covers 2021. If nothing is done, we plan to go public on the news with the photos, hopefully we can say NHTSA did something (or we can say NHTSA did nothing). Other families are at risk, they need to know to get out fast cause it could catch fire or explode. They need to not assume the engine is overheating (as I would have done 2 months ago) it could be on fire .
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle in the morning, he detected an abnormal fluttering sound. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the cam phaser needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 66,000.
The Auto-Start/Stop is malfunctioning as follows: When I am stopped at a stop sign, when the auto-start/stop is engaged, the engine will shut down when fully stopped. When the engine re-engages (by even letting off the brake a small amount), the car transmission jolts the car forward very aggressively even thought the brakes are still pressed. It does this every time that the auto on/off is engaged. It is very dangerous! This is because the car will move a full foot, or more, forward when the engine reengages. I took my Expedition to the Ford dealer and the code is "TSB 23-2250" my understanding is that this code is for "AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - HARSH/DELAYED ENGAGEMENT AND/OR HARSH/DELAYED SHIFT". The dealership said that the Expedition needs a new "valve body" and that it would be on back order or they can overhaul it for about the same price and they can do that soon. The quote is for $1,400 to fix this issue. I have found out that the part is on back-order from the manufacturer and that they have ordered a significant number of this part -- CLEARLY there are a ton of people needing to fix this part right now. This is SIGNIFICANTLY dangerous because when the engine reengages and the transmission has a harsh engagement at that exact same moment, I have come close to rear-ending vehicles several times. This is a significant safety issue and NOT my fault and should be immediately fixed and paid for by FORD. You can contact me in any manner: [XXX] - [XXX] -- [XXX] -- [XXX] . The transmission is a 10 speed and when I took off at the green light and it jerked violently when changing gears then go out of gear and we basically stopped in the middle if the highway and we’re almost rear-ended. It continuously got worse and then completely stopped in the highway. We took it to the Ford Dealership in Florence SC and the mechanic said that FORD knew there was an issue with the 10 speed transmission but were not doing anything to remedy it at this time. We took it to several transmission shops & they each said they had several of FORD expedition &F150 waiting to have new transmission with same issue. Currently our FORD expedition is in the shop awaiting a new transmission. This shop has 4 additional FORDS there with the same issue.
Since purchasing the vehicle we have had extensive issues with the driveability of the car. Leading up to the eventual full transmission replacement, we surfaced the issues below repeatedly for over a year and a half. Yet, we were always told "everything is fine" "we couldn't duplicate what you are describing" or "the vehicle has to learn how you drive". Biggest Issues: - Poor shifting of gears with sudden jerking and/or random accelerations - Vehicle not accelerating - acts stuck - Loss of 'power' vehicle does nothing - Eventually complete transmission failure in the middle of an intersection The transmission was completely replaced in Fall of 2023. Mind you this was only after I elevated my concerns to Ford Corporate who sent a specialist to investigate. Only then did Koons Ford acknowledge that yes there is a "big problem". Yet, since the repair the jerking and power issues have continued. When we followed up immediately after the repair we were told again "vehicle has to learn how you drive". So I waited 3000 miles and reached out again and was told I needed to go to the dealership and drive it with a technician in the car (yet again, not taking my word seriously). Then this summer the issues intensified and eventually the power boosters failed and needed to be replaced. This vehicle is NOT safe and Ford has misled me along the way. It has been a constant fight to get them to help us. Bottom line, this is our primary family vehicle as we have five children, four of whom I drive around daily. It is not safe or reliable. The vehicle has almost led to three major accidents, where I was stuck with cars honking at me. It's pretty pathetic when friends and coworkers frequently say "you don't have your car again?!? What's wrong with it now?" Please I kindly ask that you hold Ford fully accountable. I am now aware that when I inquired about a buy back in 2022, I should have not been told "no you are not eligible".
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that after starting the vehicle, he heard an abnormal sound coming from the engine compartment. Upon attempting to drive the vehicle, the vehicle lost motive power and failed to accelerate as intended. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the cam phasers. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to Customer Satisfaction Program: 21N03, but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 90,000.
2018 Ford Expedition 3.5 - Engine makes a metal noise upon start up. Brought the vehicle to a licensed mechanic and was advised that the cam phasers have failed. This has caused engine trouble to include coolant leak and intermittent A/C. Dealership advised that there is no warranty and will not cover any cost of repairs.
We were having issues with our transmission shifting very abruptly and making a clunking noise back in late June 2023. This was occurring as my wife was traveling out of state for a funeral to Michigan. We were able to drop the vehicle off at a certified mechanic in Ohio, and were told that they were metal shavings inside the transmission. The vehicle sat there for several weeks, waiting on a new/remanned transmission from a local Ford dealership. The transmission was replaced, and I flew back to Ohio to drive the vehicle back to Virginia in early August. At first, the vehicle was shifting and driving normally as it should. However, when I was near Richmond, Virginia, I had to change lanes to pass a semi, and when I pressed the gas, all power was lost and the lights on the dash went completely black. About 2 to 3 seconds later, the vehicle shifted with a loud clunk and the advance track warning light came on. The malfunction nearly caused an accident as vehicles behind me had to slam on their brakes, as I finally made my way to the shoulder of the road to collect myself.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while starting the vehicle, there was an abnormal sound coming from the vehicle when started. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that there was no recall on the VIN. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that when he started the vehicle in the morning, the engine made an abnormal rattling sound. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the cam phasers needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000. The VIN was unavailable.
The screen does not turn on making the backup camera not work.
Rear hatch closes on person under it spontaneously and does not stop. ie will compress you if you do not move out of the way quickly. Could get squished? No No No
The contact’s daughter owns a 2018 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that she noticed that her daughter’s vehicle made an abnormal sound at start up. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the cam phaser had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and offered to pay half the cost for the repair. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000.
In July of 2023, while driving on the highway and depressing gas pedal, the transmission seemed to disengage from engine. The vehicle lurched, making control difficult and putting me in a position of being unable to get a response when steering vehicle. The vehicle rapidly lost speed making a rear end collision possible. The engine began racing forcing me to release gas pedal completely until I could gently depress pedal hoping the transmission would reengage. The transmission finally chose a gear and I was able to accelerate avoiding a collision and reach a safe speed. No lights or codes showed after the event. This was my first time driving the vehicle on a highway after purchasing it used, 2 weeks prior, from a local Ford dealer, who certified the vehicle as safe to drive. A second incident happened Sept. 2023 under similar circumstances.
The service engine light has come on and off (and stayed on, in some instances) for a few years. The alert in the Ford app states that there is a problem with my vehicle's emissions and exhaust system. I have taken it to my local Ford dealership many, many times. When the vehicle is "throwing codes", as they call it, it has to do with the cam phasers. I have had the recall on the cam phasers done already, but they refuse to fix it again under the recall because "the part numbers have changed". Same cam phaser issue, but the same exact parts have different part numbers than they did 2 years ago, so now Ford doesn't have to fix it? The problem has been ongoing since 2020.
I have had issues with my Expedition not shifting gears properly/slipping gears. This usually happens during acceleration. Rpm will rise but act as if I’m in neutral and significantly reduce my speed, then with a hard thunk it will jerk my car into gear. This has happened twice on the freeway, once almost causing me to be rear-ended with my children in the car. The other car had to swerve off to the side to avoid hitting me. The dash will flash a shifting warning light and go away almost as soon as I get the chance to look at it. The other times have happened on main roads in town. Thankfully where it’s easy enough to pull off to the side when this happens. But even so, it’s starting to happen more often and at slower speeds where I’m accelerating maybe 5-10 mph faster. Just today, and the reason I am finally posting a complaint, my car slipped out of gear and when it finally slammed back into gear, the force was so strong that it whipped me forward and caused me to brake in the middle of rush hour traffic. Not only that, but it went out 2 more times on my way home and now I’m hearing a rattling noise under my car (which is probably metal shavings). The only thing on the dash this time was a yellow warning reading ‘see manual.’ This is my family vehicle that I use to transport my kids to school, sports, etc. So they are in the vehicle with me about 95% of the time. I am honestly afraid this will happen again at the wrong time while they’re in the car with me. Is Ford waiting for a death to happen before they address this issue? Just do a basic search on Expedition transmissions and it’s all over the place. So many people are having the same issue and forking out so much money to replace or have their transmissions rebuilt. I have taken my vehicle in just for them to tell me they can’t recreate the issue and therefore nothing can be done. No codes are pulling and it drives fine. Ford needs to address this and recall their 10R80 transmissions!
Gears are slipping, vehicle loses power, clunking noises, ghost spanner icon on dashboard, jerks heavily sometimes when going from park to drive, shift system displays on dash after noises.
Rear passenger door will not open from the outside even in the unlocked position. It is still locked and cannot be opened from the inside or the outside. We have children that require the use of safety seats. in the event of an accident, we cannot remove them from the back seats. We have to climb from the front seats to the back just to get them out of the car. I have not been to the dealer but, the problem is still not resolved. No one has inspected the vehicle. There were no warning signals whatsoever. i consider this a major problem in the event of an accident. Not being able to get out or have help open the door from the outside will put lives at risk.
The cam shafts are not function correctly and need to be replaced which is causing the engine to overheat. The heater hose blew while we were driving the other day and engine temperature went to almost 300. The catalytic converter is also not functioning which is releasing emissions when we drive. The overheating engine could cause a fire while driving and the we all know about the emissions procedures. The vehicle has been inspected by the correct dealership. The warning light did come on and we took it into the dealership within the week. We also heard a knocking in the engine when we cold started the car. The engine light was not on when the heater hose blew due to the faulty cam shafts.
On [XXX] my wife was driving with my three children from Virginia to Michigan after my step-fathers sudden passing. While driving on the interstate in Ohio, the vehicle began shifting abruptly and violently. The wrench light also came on the dash along with a message recorded in the Ford App stating "Powertrain Malfunction." My wife pulled into a rest stop and called me hysterical, stating that the vehicle was jerking so bad upon acceleration that she was afraid to cause an accident. Since we purchased an extended warranty (third-party CarMax), we found a nearby auto shop in network and I drove down from Michigan to meet my wife and get the vehicle to the shop (Tuffy). After inspection, Tuffy stated that the entire transmission would need to be replaced, but that they were on back-order through the local Ford Dealership and could take up to 12 weeks. I also contacted Ford to see if there was any remaining manufacture warranty, but was told the the 3 year/ 36k mile warranty was expired. So I continued and had the vehicle repaired through Tuffy. After several weeks, the transmission was replaced, I flew up to Ohio and drove the vehicle back to Virginia. However, a couple of months later, I discovered that the vehicle, in fact, had a 7 year/ 100k extended powertrain warranty that Ford omitted when I originally contacted them. Ford was reluctant, but ultimately reimbursed me for the out-of-pocket expenses for the repair due to their mistake many months later. When we drive long distance or up in altitude a coolant temperature indicator comes up and says it is high, it hits about 132 degrees going up any sort of hill and then goes down after a few seconds, this doesn't seem to be normal. We took to a Ford dealership and tried to have them replicate the issue but they could not, we have replaced the coolant hose and it is still happening, there is no leak ANYWHERE. If Ford can't figure out this problem then who can? We have also had the transmission replaced around 120K miles which I feel is ridiculous, it was putting my family in danger when we were driving, we had NO CHOICE. My Ford app is also giving me a service engine soon warning, saying that my emissions and exhaust system are failing, why would all of this happen after shy of 6 years? This warning started happening 06/11/23. We feel like we received a lemon vehicle, we also cannot use the sunroof, my stepping boards do not want to work, my mirrors when locking and unlocking my vehicle just click I have to manually adjust them...I take very good care of my vehicle (regular oil changes/premium gas) and to receive ALL of these issues if highly disappointing....I can't trade it in with all the issues and I can't even get HALF of what we owe...
Door locks don’t unlock on 3 out of 4 doors. Transmission jerks and acts like losing power frequently. Engine tries to die at idle when stopping. Timing chains failed along with cam phasers yet symptoms still continue. Heater hoses leak to heater core. This caused high temps of 255 degrees to occur for engine.
RPMs rev up as the truck is changing gears- engine stalls which causes an abrupt halt. I have to let off the gas for the gears to catch up. Several mechanics have looked and there are no codes. This is a very dangerous situation as I am on the road several hours a day for my job. It is especially scary when my children are in the car. Apparently, this is very common with the 2018 Ford models and NOTHING is being done!!!!!! Ford will be sued if this causes an accident d/t no my fault of my own. THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED ASAP!!!!!!!!!

The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to contact the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 83,000.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving approximately 2 mph, the vehicle failed to shift into gear. Additionally, the vehicle shifted into the wrong gear occasionally. The vehicle was jerking forward and backward. The vehicle unintendedly downshifted or upshifted. There were no warning lights illuminated. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 68,000.
Cam Phaser issue after 89,000 miles
The expedition started skipping gears and shifting hard, the shop had it for several weeks trying to determine issue. Their conclusion was the transmission so they just rebuilt it. That was in 2022. We returned it to the shop for the same issues only worse in July 2023 where it is still at now. They’ve said the technician has looked at it and knows it’s a transmission problem but has several with the same problem in front of mine so it will still be a while before they get to work on it.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, a rattling sound was coming from the vehicle. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was informed that the cam phaser needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and informed the contact that there were no recalls associated with the VIN, and that the warranty on the vehicle had expired. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 57,000.
The air conditioner does not blow cold air when turned on. This vehicle was manufactured in the same facility as the other recall on 2018 Ford expeditions manufactured in Kentucky for the air issues. The recall for those vehicle show manufactured in January of 2018 to February of 2018. However, my vehicle was manufactured December of [XXX] but has the same issue. We noticed the air was not working about 6 months after purchasing it (bought in colder weather) and did not learn of the previous recall until now. The contact owns a 2018 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed and attempting to stop the vehicle, water started to enter through the instrument panel. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the tracks on the moon roof had failed and needed to be replaced; however, the moon roof was re-sealed as a temporary fix. The vehicle was repaired. The contact was concerned that the failure would reoccur. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that half the cos would be covered. The failure mileage was approximately 51,271.
No Brakes, Engine Racing, & ignition would not turn off, yes available for inspection at Seth Whatley Ford. Car crashed which was the only way it came to a stop, wheels were still turning when I got out of the car, if anyone one had been around they would have been hurt or killed. Towed to dealer, dealer was unable to find any evidence on their side. Insurance adjuster came out and assess the damage from crash. There was no warning lights or sensors that were working during this episode. Monday, March 27, 2023 at approximately 10am, I got into my Expedition to start my vehicle, the brake pedal was depressed as I pushed the button to start the car, and the engine was running smoothly. Foot was on the brake pedal when I put the car into reverse, the car shot out from the carport and engine was racing. I tried to pump the breaks and push the engine button, while guiding the car as it kept going faster and faster, until I hit a trailer that was attached to a truck. There was two witness that saw everything, that went on. I feel this car is DANGEROUS. If this had occurred when my family was around serious injuries could have occurred, or if I had been in a parking lot, there was no way to stop and I was not in control. Safety is the first issue. Special Note - I took my car in February 2022 for the recall.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving under 35 MPH, the transmission was shifting hard and hesitating between gear. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the transmission control module (TCM) needed to be replaced; however, no repairs were completed. The vehicle was then taken to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 69,000.
-Powertrain seems to be the issue. It is available for inspection. *This has been happening since March '23- and it was very dangerous to myself and my daughter who was with me - occurred 6-7 times - and about 15 occurrences since then, life threatening danger to myself and my husband when with me. -Problem has not been reproduced by the dealer, but google this issue and many forums reference this "popping out of gear" problem. It is difficult to reproduce as it happens without warning, mostly at high speeds- no warning codes on the dash. . I have an '18 Expedition Limited 4WD. Issue occurs in 2Hmode, which I am always in. At highway speeds (70-85mph)while coasting, then attempting to accelerate(ie while trying to pass slower traffic) the car will lurch/make a clunk sound and "pop out of gear"(rpm's will rise as if in neutral and car won't accelerate). When I let off the gas, the transmission will lurch/make another loud clunk & engage a gear, then proceed to accelerate normally when I re-apply throttle. The clunk sounds are loud, jarring & alarming- like the engine is going to fall out. -No warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem- although the most recent incident 8/27/23- a wrench flashed on the dash- and the engine sounded like a buzz saw was grinding metal off the engine under my car while it popped out of gear, would not accelerate while traffic has to swerve to avoid hitting me from behind. I am having to quickly engage my hazards and hope the car coming up behind has time to notice. It has continued to happen when I'm on the highway, usually when passing & it has been extremely dangerous because when the car pops out of gear- my brakes aren't engaged so no brake lights to warn other cars that suddenly, at 80 mph, I pulled into their lane to pass but am now decelerating to 50mph. I am fearful of my car unexpectedly losing ability to accelerate while another car slams into me from behind. I am scared to continue driving my car.
All 4 struts failed at approximately 46,000 miles. It is available for inspection upon request but for safety reasons I will have it fixed as soon as possible. It had been riding rough for a while and started sending my children flying around the backseat particularly the third row and grew much louder and jostling with every bump in the road. Last oil change at 43,000 miles it was recommended to replace rear struts due to leaking but I was waiting for a second opinion. When I took it in for an alignment after new tires were put on I made no mention of this to see what they said and sure enough all 4 struts were leaking and needed replaced as soon as possible at 46,000 miles. No warning lamps or messages. Problems first appeared around July 2022 and progressively got worse.
Cold Start Rattle. Dealership verified it was the cam phasers.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle hesitated to accelerate while the transmission made abnormal sounds. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the failure was related to Technical Service Bulletin: 22-2145 (Momentary Neutral-Out Condition in Drive) however, the vehicle was not covered under the TSB. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was out of warranty. The failure mileage was approximately 111,000.
10 speed transmission is eratic and can cause sudden loss of power or stuck in gear and slamming in and out of gears.
As the vehicle accelerates it experiences a loss of power randomly at both low speeds and high speeds (like it randomly shifted into neutral) then after letting off the accelerator the vehicles clunks into gear. I experienced this at roughly 60k miles in both 2WD and less frequently in 4WD. It’s absolutely a safety hazard while driving on the roads.
