NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2019 Ford Expedition. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while stopped at a stop sign and reaching into the center console, the contact's ring finger touched the silver chrome trim near the sliding opening latch and was severely lacerated, almost severing it completely. As a result, the contact lost consciousness, causing the vehicle to collide with a tree. Fortunately, the contact did not sustain any additional injuries. No police report was filed. The contact was able to drive away from the accident scene and personally repair the vehicle. The manufacturer has been notified of this incident.
Approximately One week ago, I was on the freeway when at 70 miles an hour warning light came in with brake system. Failure came up, and I lost all power to the vehicle and shut down and I tried restarting it on neutral. I was in traffic, which made it more difficult to go onto the side of the road went to I was in the center divider. There was no power of any kind to left side of vehicle windows, door locks, etc. the vehicle was towed to the dealership in San Diego where they told me they couldn’t look at the vehicle For over a month, but their service tech and the repair person from the dealership was unable to attach a computer to the vehicle scanner was not showing anything wrong. I then had the vehicle towed again to my home where the dealer had told me it was a battery however I purchased a new battery from the dealer , and it made no difference approximately three days later I started the vehicle to roll up the window that was down and everything seem to work however, I put it in and proceeded forward. The same situation occurred once again with the statement system system failure, but this time parking assist downhill Was also showing on the dashboard warning indicator. I have replaced the motor transmission and turbo on this back in January 2024. Vehicle is still under warranty however this seems to be a problem if the vehicle is cutting out with very minimal warning and shutting down on the freeway, this can cause an accident with myself and anybody near me , because the vehicle and the braking system shut down. I don’t know if this is a recall, but it’s something that should be looked at in a timely matter. Please contact me with further details. God bless.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the contact noticed a failure with the transmission. The contact stated that the vehicle shuddered and hesitated upon the depression of the accelerator pedal with the transmission warning light illuminated. The vehicle was able to restart however, the failure recurred. The dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 73,200.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving on several occasions at various speeds, there was a thumping sound coming from the vehicle. The check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was steered to the side of the road and turned off. The vehicle was towed to the residence. Additionally on one occasion when the vehicle was shifted into reverse, the vehicle failed to respond as intended. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that parts of the transmission needed to be replaced and an engine error code was retrieved. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 75,000.
Since we bought our car, it has had a rattle upon startup. This was originally a recall, which we got repaired, but this repair did not make the rattle go away. I then had a transmission problem and had to have the transmission overhauled due to it having violent, jerky, unpredictable shifting between gears. When I mentioned the rattle again while they were fixing the transmission, they said that it’s a known problem with Ford cam phasers around our model year. They informed me that the fix offered in the recall was an electronic fix, but the actual parts need to be replaced and the recall didn’t cover that. The parts replacement was almost $4000, and from my research, not replacing these parts can cause the engine to stop functioning properly over time. In the past two weeks, I have been getting safety notices from my car that there are timing issues that need to be serviced. Contacting Ford did not help as there is no active recall for this problem. From my research, there is an active lawsuit open against Ford for this cam phaser problem with my year model car. Overall, cam phasers play a critical role in enhancing the efficiency, performance, and reliability of 10-speed engines by enabling precise control over the engine’s valve timing. However, after just replacing my transmission we cannot afford to pay another $4000 for this error. Ford said they cannot help unless there is a recall on the vehicle.
Transmission (10R80) had dark and foul smelling fluid and shifted erratically, harsh, clunky and delayed @ ~75K miles, perhaps even much sooner. Ford repeatedly stated that the performance was as expected and normal behavior making no effort to further diagnose or support. Next, the transmission fluid was sampled during a flush by a Ford dealer and sent to a lab for analysis. Report came back that there was high metal content in the fluid. New fluid quickly became dark and foul smelling again with similar performance as above. Next I had Ford dealer reset the shift learning and update/check the shift sequence as recommended by a current TSB. Even after some time, the performance was similar as above. Next I had a Ford dealer diagnose further, to which they then said that I needed a new transmission. At this time, the original TSB was added to, where now the CDF drum was noted as a possible failure. At this time, however, the TSB did not mention a need for clutch replacement. Finally, the transmission was completely rebuilt. All of this was paid for by me out of pocket.

The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving 30 MPH, the passenger’s side front seat belt exploded. There was an abnormal banging noise heard and there was smoke inside the vehicle. While occupying the passenger's side front seat, the seat belt pulled hard, and the passenger was slammed against the seat. The driver was able to pull over safely. The air bag warning light was illuminated. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V099000 (Seat Belts) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
I exited the freeway and pulled straight in to a gas station, as I was coming to a stop I felt a powerful thud in my chest, heard an explosion or gun shot sound, and lost my vision for a split second. As it returned I fully expected to see my airbag had deployed in my chest, however my steering wheel was in tact. My entire chest felt like I had been punched. I looked into the mirror and noticed my collar bone was already red, as well as my right lower quadrant. I sat there and began to cry as I had no idea what had happened. I began to notice the smell of an explosion like fireworks. I asked my passenger if she saw what happened as she sat there looking at me terrified. Her response was 'no but I heard it, did we just crash?' My next thought was I had a seatbelt airbag deploy. I examined my belt and there was no airbag in it. At this time I noticed the belt was fully extended and would not retract back into the slot. I got out of the vehicle to do a walk around to make sure I had not triggered an airbag sensor. There was no damage. Now I was terrified because I had no clue what happened and my chest hurt so bad. I began to do research online and found out I had a recall on my seatbelt. I concluded it was in fact my seatlbelt when the red spots on my left collar bone turned into 1in x 0.5in abrasions the following morning. 18 hours later my right eye ball began to feel bruised. By 24 hours I began to have a headache and nausea. I was seen in the ER and had to have a CT scan of my head, neck, and chest. Although my scan came back clear I was diagnosed with contusions to my chest, a closed head injury, and a subcongunctival hemorrhage. By 36 hours my sclera was swollen and there was little to no visible white. At this point I was seen by opthalmology. He said the hemorrhage was very large and caused by such a sudden increase in intracranial pressure. The prognosis was good, treatment was steroid eye drops and rest. I now have alot of anxiety that it may happen again

Ford issued a recall on the cam phasers for some vehicles this year make and model. Ours was never recalled but obviously faulty as we are having to replace the motor at 80000 miles.
After the engine would warm up a loud knocking started without warning lights. After driving it to the dealer they stated, "You need a new engine, it probably had a blown rear main". The engine has 154,550 nearly all freeway miles. Regular maintenance. No prior issues other that a deer strike, which was repaired.

The failure mileage was approximately 46,000.
In June 2024, my 2019 Ford Expedition experienced serious transmission and powertrain problems. Diagnostic testing identified catalyst efficiency codes (P0430), and I was given a repair estimate that included catalytic converter replacement. The vehicle also displayed repeated “Service Engine Soon” and “Powertrain Malfunction/Reduced Power” warnings. Because the vehicle became undrivable and the repair costs were unaffordable, I was forced to release it to auction in June 2024, resulting in a significant financial loss. In April 2025, Ford issued Recall 24E13 acknowledging that PCM programming errors could falsely trigger catalyst efficiency codes (such as P0430), potentially leading to unnecessary catalytic converter replacements, exactly the condition my vehicle experienced. This recall defect directly contributed to the loss I suffered, as I still owed about $11,000 on the vehicle when I could no longer use it. I have already opened a case with Ford (Case #CXH05645573C2W6R6), but I have not received meaningful assistance. When I contacted Ford Customer Service, I was not offered escalation or resolution. I was only told to call another phone number, which left my case unresolved. I respectfully request that NHTSA review Ford’s handling of this defect, including the financial impact on owners like myself who incurred substantial losses before the recall was announced.
Vehicle transmission jerky with hard shifts, has missed gears resulting in vehicle in neutral while in traffic at speed. Could be a major hazard at intersections. Issue appears to be common enough for Ford to issue TSB but only repair available is transmission rebuild or replacement. Local dealer service adviser states issue is happening once a week with vehicles in their shop. This is a known issue with the CDF drum within the transmission that is putting people at risk.
I was sitting in the passenger seat unbuckling the seatbelt. A loud noise went off behind me right almost like a gun shot. The seat shot from my hand and tore the leather in the car near the wind. The seatbelt also started smoking and left a smoke residue on the car. The seatbelt in locked in position and cannot be used any more. My right thumb was hit and at this time is in excruciating pain. I cannot make a fist. I’m headed to the doctor for more specifics.
The transmission seems to slip, shudder and sometimes lag or jerk ahead unexpectedly. At times when waiting to cross traffic, the lagging makes it so I almost stall for a second or two and fear getting hit by oncoming traffic. Each time I have asked the dealership to determine the cause, I am told they have to do a software update and reset the adaptive drive to the factory reset. I have had this serviced three times and the problem continues to reoccur a couple months after the reset and software update. Then I get to take it back and pay for the same service all over again. The incorrect timing of the transmission may now have led to a faulty catalytic converter which is now having to be replaced at only 88k miles.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the driver's side air bag inadvertently deployed. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed failures with both the seat belt and driver's side air bags. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V099000 (Seat Belts). The VIN was included, but parts were not yet available. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 93,000.
In or around October I reported my Seatbelt tensioner/retractor explosive device deployed almost causing me to have an accident. After really complaining to Ford, they finally fixed it. Now my warning light came on pertaining to my passenger side tensioner. I also received the notice, and went to my dealership. They had the vehicle for a week and could not fix it. They said Ford has to ok it and supply the parts, and it could take all the way to the end of 2024. They gave me the vehicle back, refused a loaner and said their hands were tied. I can tell you first hand that someone may die or cause a serious accident if driving at high speed when the device deploys. It is as loud as a 45 cal or shotgun, inside the cab. The SPL is enormous and the seatbelt tightens 3 to 4 inches, causing disorientation, total fear and loss of control of the vehicle. My incident caused me to have irregular heartbeat and I ended up in the hospital. THEY NEED TO REPLACE THESE DEVICES ASAP, BEFOE SOMEONE DIES.
Transmissions are failing. They have a faulty CDF drum. In the 10R80 transmissions. Ford knows it. And they aren't recalling it. Transmissions are failing at low mileage. Some are out of warranty for the age. People are having to pay for 2 and 3 Transmissions. Pay for outrageous extended warranties just to be covered. They are jumping gears and completely dying on highways. I belong to an expedition group. And every day someone is almost in an accident. Or are replacing a transmission. I've had problems since I got mine. Hard shifting. Delayed shifting. 3 times in two weeks I tried passing on a highways. I hit the gas to pass. And it made a loud bang and lost all power to transmission. Was like it's in neutral. I had to try getting to the side of the high way through traffic before it stopped moving. Had to put back in park. Shut car off and restart. I had kids in the car both times. Thousands of people are having this problem. I was going up a hill and almost was rear ended. If my kids had been hurt. Ford would have been sued. They know it's a problem. Same transmission in the expedition. F150s. They just keep making money off people fixing them and the Ford warranty. Many people they completely failed on highways. Someone is going to get hurt because they refuse to acknowledge its a safety issue and just do a repair that needs done again in a year or two. This has been going on for years and still no recall. Something needs to be done already.

Our car is only 2 months out of warranty and has 52,000. I have the 10R80 or 10-speed transmission that is all of the internet. My symptoms include very hard jerks when slowing down while driving, Loss of power when accelerating, and a delay in power when accelerating from a complete stop. I drive 4 kids around and it feels like I am being rear-ended sometimes. The dealerships are well aware of this problem with these cars but will not take action.
My wife was driving her 2019 Expedition alone approximately 50 MPH and unexpectedly heard what she described as a gunshot and the seatbelt instantly tightened against her. There was no warranted reason for this incident. There was no collision, not even a jolt to the vehicle such as a pothole or the like. This is the second time occurrence to this vehicle. The front Passenger side seatbelt did this 7 months ago with no one seated there. The airbag light has been on since the first incident. Now the Driver's seatbelt is stuck in that position, will not retract or adjust at all. We will be bringing the vehicle in to a dealer to access issue.
We bought a 2019 Ford expedition max xlt. On a trip we kept having problems with it jumping out of gear and it felt like the transmission was going to fall out. We looked it up and found several complaints on this same problem with the 2019 models although I can't find any recalls that would have fixed the problem.
Transmission is shifting hard around 4th or 5th gear. It is lagging as well causing the car not to accelerate when needed causing safety concern while driving in traffic. It will randomly have high rpms like it is shifting out of gear when not needed. There are no lights or codes. It hasn’t been inspected by dealer. It is a common problem on ford expeditions. My friend is having the exact same problem and you can find it all over the internet of other consumers have the same problem as well. It is dangerous to drive if it malfunctions while on the road with traffic especially with children in the car.

The seatbelt failed just like it is stated in the recall. Recall #24S06. The dealer is stating they have no fix for this problem and charging $1000 to put the same faulty seatbelt back in the car.
When driving the vehicle shifts very hard and has a loud clanging in second and fifth gear. It skips those gears and will lag in intersections and on roadways because of the skip. Had it diagnosed by a transmission shop and they said it needed cam phasers. Took it to the dealer and the said it needed a new valve body as the issue was repeatable. Had the valve body replaced and it is still doing it and even worse. No lights came on, and we bought the vehicle used with 81k miles on it and we noticed it right away, so the dealer did a “reprogram” of the software and said it was fine. It started to do it again right away and we called the dealer and they would not return our call. We drove it because we had too until it got bad enough we didn’t feel safe driving it anymore and now it is waiting for the hopes that a new transmission will fix the issue.
I've had a problem with these two service bulletins: TSB 24-2101 and TSB 23-2143. They are known issues with Ford. I am three weeks out of warranty, and they won't fix these things. These items should be recalled as they are defects.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated there was an abnormal ticking noise coming from the vehicle while idling. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was initially taken back to where the vehicle was purchased and the contact was informed that the noise was related to the engine solenoid; however, the contact was assured that no repair was needed and that the noise was normal. Overtime, the contact stated that an abnormal rattling noise was coming from the vehicle at cold start of the engine and the ticking noise persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was given a case number. The manufacturer then referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
When I cold start my 2019 Ford Expedition Limited it has a ticking noise under the hood coming from the engine. Remote start or in the cab button start noise happens. Would like this fixed asap as the manufacturer Ford is aware of the problem. I’ve own a 2004 Ford explorer xlt never had any problems except wear and tear. Silverado was my 1st truck no problems. I love ford trucks, I’m embarrassed by this. Please honor your slogan “Built Ford Tough” Thank you

The failure mileage was 69,000.
Problems with vehicle not staying in neutral problem with vehicle just losing power in the road problems with the shift system error coming on after taking to the dealership to find out there’s issues with the transmission. Apparently this is a pretty common problem.
In April 2024, the dealer that I purchased my new 2019 Ford Expedition from (in 2019) diagnosed my vehicle with needing the cam phasers replaced, after hearing rattling sounds. After doing some research, I learned that, in November 2021, Ford had issued Customer Satisfaction Program 21N03 -- recognizing that the cam phasers were defective and needed replaced. However, I have come to learn that my VIN number was not included in 21N03 -- for whatever reason. And as such, neither my dealer nor me received notice of 21N03. The dealer is refusing to replace the defective cam phasers. Ford is saying -- it's not covered because my VIN isn't included in 21N03. But nobody can tell me why. It's a 2019 Ford Expedition that SHOULD BE included in the recall. If it isn't, why?
The center console cup holder collapsed. It was a driving distraction and could have resulted in injury. We now have a have an open hole in the center of our car.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that the vehicle made a loud clunking sound with the transmission shifting hard. The instrument panel displayed the messages “Mechanical Transmission Failure” and “Auto Shift Neutral Mechanical Failure”. Additionally, the wrench symbol was displayed on the instrument panel, and the vehicle was losing motive power. The contact stated while driving at approximately 80 MPH and attempting to accelerate while switching lanes, the transmission shifted hard, and the vehicle lost motive power as if the vehicle was idling. The vehicle immediately regained motive power and the contact was able to drive the vehicle. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who was unable to diagnose the vehicle due to the warning light not remaining illuminated. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that there were no recalls associated with the VIN. The manufacturer had filed a complaint regarding the failure. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was 62,800.
