AT THE END OF JUNE OF THIS YEAR, I HAD BEEN ON TRIP TO SEATTLE IN 90 DEGREE WEATHER AND UPON ARRIVING BACK HOME IN FOREST GROVE, OREGON MY LEFT FRONT TIRE WENT FLAT. MY HUSBAND IMMEDIATELY WENT OUT TO LOOK AT IT AND FOUND THAT THE BELTS UNDER THE TREADS HAD SEPARATED, WHICH HE THOUGHT WAS VERY ODD. HE THEN LOOKED AT THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE WHERE THE SAME PROCESS HAD JUST BEGUN. WE HAD THE TIRES REPLACED THE NEXT DAY. *AK( DOT NUMBER: W2HL 1MO 2 TIRE SIZE: P235/75R15 )

THE LEFT REAR TIRE SEPARATED AT APPROXIMATELY 12PM ON JUNE 23, 2000 AT 55MPH, TEMPEERATURE 86-88 DEGREES F. I WAS DRIVING 70 MPH ON 4 LANE HWY WHEN I HEARD A LOUD NOISE AT THE REAR OF MY CAR AND THE CAR PULLED TO MY LEFT. I LOOKED IN MY SIDE MIRROR AND SAW A PIECE OF TIRE BOUNCING ON THE ROAD. I THOUGHT I HAD A BLOWOUT BUT I STILL HAD CONTROL OF MY CAR SO I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND SAW THAT THE WHOLE TREAD ON MY REAR LEFT TIRE HAD PULLED AWAY FROM THE REST OF THE TIRE. IT STILL WAS INFLATED SO I DROVE TO MY OFFICE 4 MILES AWAY AT 35 MPH AND HAD MY MECHANIC PUT ON THE SPARE. I BROUGHT MY CAR TO OSBURN'S TIRE CENTER, INC. IN MORGAN CITY, LA. AND TROY OSBURN TOLD ME THAT HE WOULD ORDER A REPLACEMENT TIRE AND CALL ME WHEN IT CAME IN. I GOT THE TIRE CHANGED OUT AND WAS GIVEN A BILL FOR THE REPLACEMENT TIRE FOR $ 99.98. I WILL SCAN A COPY OF THE BILL AND EMAIL TO YOU. I WAS UPSET THAT I HAD TO PAY $ 100.00 FOR THE TIRE AND I ALSO SUSTAINED SOME DAMAGE TO THE CAR. I ASKED TROY IF I COULD GET REIMBURSED FOR MY DAMAGES AND HE TOLD ME HE WOULD FIND OUT AND GET BACK TO ME. HE NEVER GOT BACK TO ME AND THE NEXT THING I KNOW, I SEE THAT FIRESTONE IS RECALLING MY TIRES. I WOULD LIKE TO GET REIMBURSED FOR NOT ONLY THE COST OF THE TIRE BUT GET REIMBURSED FOR MY DAMAGES. I HAVE SPOKEN TO TROY AT OSBURNS SINCE THE RECALL AND HE TOLD ME HE NOT A FIRESTONE DEALER AND HAD NOT KNOWN AT THE TIME WHAT STEPS WOULD BE TAKEN TO GET MY TIRES REPLACED. I HAVE TRIED NUMEROUS TIMES CALLING FIRESTONES HOTLINE BUT KEEP GETTING BUSY SIGNAL. I WANTED TO REPORT THIS INCIDENT TO YOU SO THAT YOU WOULD BE INFORMED. WHAT SHOULD I DO ABOUT THIS BILL AND IF I AM OWED FOR DAMAGES THAT THE TREAD CAUSED TO MY BUMPER AND SIDE WALL WHILE THE TREAD WAS SPINNING AROUND INSIDE THE INSIDE FENDER WALL? FRONT RADIUS ARM BUSHING WAS DEFECTIVE AND CAUSED CAR TO NOT STEER PROPERLY, AND MAKES A SQUEALING NOISE.*AK
I WAS TRAVELLING AT 65MPH ON THE FREEWAY WHEN THE TREAD OF THE LEFT REAR TIRE SEPARATED FROM THE TIRE. I LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR. THE CAR SWERVED ACROSS THREE LANES AND ROLLED OVER 1 AND 1/4 TIMES, LANDING ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE. THE TIRES HAD BEEN INSPECTED AND ROTATED 4 MONTHS (1500 MILES) BEFORE THE ACCIDENT. CONSUMER REPLACED THE FIRESTONE TIRES, 1 TIRE EXPERIENCED A BLOWOUT DUE TO TREAD SEPARATION AND 2 OTHERS SHOWED SIGNS OF TREAD SEPARATION, THE CONSUMER IS BEING DENIED REIMBURSEMENT DUE TO REPLACING THE TIRES PRIOR TO AUGUST 9TH, 2000 ON A PRO-RATA BASIS. *SLC
THIS 1994 FORD EXPLORER XLT 4WD HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE ENGINE CUT-OFF WHILE DRIVING . THIS PROBLEM START TO HAPPENED IN THE FALL OF 1999, RECENTLY ON MAY 17, 2000 AROUND 6 PM ON FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY WHILE DRIVING AT 45 MPH THE ENGINE CUT-OFF BY ITSELF ... CAN NOT BRAKE ... STEERING WHEEL WAS HEAVY ALMOST CRASH WITH OTHER CARS. I AM NOT FEEL SAFE TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE.*AK

AS I WAS DRIVING NORTHBOUND ON I25 BETWEEN ALBUQUERQUE AND SANTA FE NM, I FELT MY EXPLORER START SHAKING AND THEN THERE WAS A VERY LOUD POP AND I SAW SOMETHING FLY PAST ME. I MANAGED TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE INTERSTATE AND GOT OUT TO SEE IF I COULD DISCOVER WHAT HAPPENED. I FOUND THE TREAD OF THE LEFT REAR TIRE HAD COME OFF. PART OF THE TREAD WAS WRAPPED AROUND THE AXLE. THE TIRE DID NOT BLOWOUT. LUCKILY I WAS NOT INJURED, ONLY VERY VERY SCARED! THE RUNNING BOARD ON THE VEHICLE WAS COMPLETELY RIPPED OFF AND GONE, BOTH LEFT DOORS ARE DAMAGED, THERE IS DAMAGE TO THE QUARTER PANEL, AND TO THE TAIL GATE. I FILED A CLAIM WITH FIRESTONE ON 5/10/00 AND SENT IN 3 ESTIMATES OF $3,000; SO FAR I SEEM TO BE GETTING THE RUNAROUND. WHEN I WAS GETTING MY ESTIMATES, I WAS TOLD THIS IS BECOMING "NORMAL" FOR FIRESTONE TIRES AND EXPLORERS AND TO COUNT MYSELF AMONG THE FEW NOT INJURED. DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD WHEN THE TREAD FORM THE LEFT REAR TIRE SEPARATED. THE TREAD ALSO DAMAGED AND BENT THE METAL ON THE VEHICLE BEHIND THE TIRE.( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: 235/75SR15 )
IN ALL CASES THE TREAD ABRUPTLY SEPARATED FROM THE BELTS, BUT THE TIRE REMAINED INFLATED. (FORTUNATELY, AS THAT LAST ONE COULD HAVE KILLED US.) DATE AND MILEAGE OF FIRST INCIDENT, AND MILEAGE OF LAST INCIDENT, ARE APPROXIMATE. HAVE NOT HAD DAMAGE ESTIMATED FOR THE LAST INCIDENT, WHICH THRASHED THE ENTIRE SIDE OF THE CAR; NO APPARENT DAMAGE FROM FIRST (NOT COUNTING THE NEW TIRE), AND ~$150 FROM THE SECOND FOR THE TAIL LIGHT AND DAMAGE TO EXHAUST SYSTEM. THE FIRST INCIDENT I ATTRIBUTED TO ROAD DEBRIS THAT I HADN'T SEEN (IT WAS NIGHT), AND THE LAST ONE I THOUGHT I WAS SAFE BECAUSE THE TIRE WAS NOT ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT AND IT ONLY HAD ~30,000 MILES ON IT. TREAD WAS GOOD ON ALL TIRES (>~1/8" ON THE OLD ONES, LOOKING NEW ON THE NEWER ONE). HAD BEEN ON THE ROAD ~45 MINUTES (FREEWAY) FOR FIRST AND LAST, AND ~10 MINUTES FOR THE SECOND INCIDENT. THE FULL LOT # ON THE LAST TIRE, READING CLOCKWISE FROM THE DOT STAMP, IS: W2HL IMO 434 SL531 K04R. I STILL HAVE THAT CARCASS. THE LAST TIME THIS HAPPENED WE WERE IN HEAVY TRAFFIC ON I5, ON THE GRAPEVINE IN CALIFORNIA AND IT TERRIFIED US. WE JUST MANAGED TO STOP . THE DEALER INDICATED THAT THERE WERE NO TECHNICAL BULLETINS ON THIS, BUT IT HAS HAPPENED TOO MANY TIMES FOR US TO BELIEVE THIS. MY HUSBAND SHOWED THE DEALER THAT HE COULD MAKE IT HAPPEN EVEN WHEN IT WAS IN PARK BY MAKING THE ACCELORATOR INCREASE. WE HAD A PART REPLACED ONLY AFTER TAKING IT BACK TWICE AND NOW IT'S DOING IT AGAIN!! THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER SAID THAT HE TOWED ANOTHER FOR (A TRUCK) THAT HAD THAT SAME PROBLEM. WE HAD THE EXPLORER TOWED THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED AND VALLEY FORD HAD IT FOR A WEEK AND SAID THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY PROBLEM.*AK
WHILE ING AT ANY SPEED THE VEHICLE WOULD SHUT OFF INTERMITTEMTLY; AFTER FIVE MINUTE OR MORE THE VEHICLE WOULD RESTART; VEHICLE BEEN IN INDEPENDENCE REPAIRS SHOP ON THREE OCCASION AND CONDITION STILL REOCCURRING. FEEL FREE TO PROVIDE ANY FURTHER DETAILS:
MAJOR PROBLEM REGARDING IGNITION SYSTEM: FIRST PROBLEM BEGAN ABOUT 6 MONTHS AGO. ON AN INTERMITTENT BASIS, UNABLE TO RESTART THE ENGINE AFTER LETTING IT SIT FOR APPROXIMATELY 5 OR 10 MINUTES. REPEATED ATTEMPTS IN SUCCESSION FAIL TO START THE ENGINE BUT HAVE FOUND THAT IF I GIVE IT A COUPLE OF MINUTES BEFORE TRYING TO CRANK IT UP AGAIN IT WILL USUALLY START. SEEMS TO HAPPEN ONLY AFTER SHORT TRIPS, LESS THAN 10-15 MILES. REPLACED THE FUEL CIRCUIT RELAY 2 MONTHS AGO, HAD ONLY ONE REOCCURRENCE A WEEK LATER. NOW FOR THE PAST 2 MONTHS THERE IS A MUCH WORSE AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS PROBLEM. THE ENGINE SHUTS OFF RANDOMLY USUALLY WHILE DRIVING BETWEEN 55-70 MPH. NO SPUTTERS, NO BACKFIRES, NO INDICATIONS THAT THE ENGINE HAS SHUT OFF OTHER THAN THE INSTRUMENT PANEL DIMS AND THE GAUGES STOP READING. THE ENGINE WON'T RESTART UNTIL AFTER A FEW MINUTES HAVE PASSED BEFORE TRYING TO CRANK IT AGAIN. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AS IT USUALLY HAPPENS WHILE TRAVELING 70 MPH. DEALERSHIP IS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM, NO ERROR CODES ARE REPORTING. FUEL PUMP: FUEL GAUGE NOT WORKING FOR SEVERAL YEARS, HOLE IN FLOAT PER DEALERSHIP, SO ENTIRE FUEL PUMP REPLACED AT MY COST. FUEL GAUGE APPEARED TO BE WORKING CORRECTLY; HOWEVER, ON AN INTERMITTENT BASIS ONCE THE TANK GOT DOWN TO 1/4 FULL THE GAUGE WOULD START OFF AT 1/4 BUT THEN AFTER DRIVING FOR 5 OR 10 MINS. THE GAUGE WOULD GO ALL THE WAY TO FULL. AFTER A FEW MONTHS OF WORKING SPORADICALLY, IT IS NOW CONSISTENTLY GOING TO FULL EVERYTIME THE TANK GETS DOWN TO 1/4. DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSED THE FUEL SENDING UNIT AS DEFECTIVE BUT WILL NOT COVER UNDER THE WARRANTY BECAUSE EVEN THOUGH IT HAS ONLY BEEN 6 MOS. , IT IS APPROX. 2000 MILES OVER THE WARRANTY LIMIT OF 12,000 MILES/12 MONTHS. I WOULD HAVE TO PAY THE SAME $340.00 PARTS & LABOR AS 6 MONTHS AGO. I FEEL THIS IS UNFAIR SO DECLINED THE WORK, NOW BEING CHARGED $67.00 DIAGNOSTIC FEE! CRUISE CONTROL: THE CRUISE CONTROL WON'T ENGAGE ON AN INTERMITTENT BASIS, DEALERSHIP UNABLE TO DUPLICATE.
DEFECTS WITH A TRANSMISSION SHOULD NOT OCCUR THIS EARLY IN THE LIFE OF A VEHICLE THAT IS BOUGHT BRAND NEW. I HAVE CORRESPONDED WITH MANY EXPLORER OWNERS AND HAVE READ 100'S OF INSTANCES ON THE INTERNET WHERE FORD EXPLORER TRANSMISSIONS HAVE FAILED EARLY IN THE LIFESPAN OF THE VEHICLE - LESS THAN 70,000 MILES. FORD OBVIOUSLY HAS INSTALLED A DEFECTIVE AND UNSAFE COMPONENT IN THIS VEHICLE AND DOES NOT WANT TO TAKE REPONSIBILITY FOR IT. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE BEFORE A SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH RESULTS FROM THIS UNSAFE COMPONENT. *AK

THE BOTTOM BOLT ATTACHING THE SHOCK ABSORBER TO THE FRAME BROKE OFF CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO BE UNCONTROLLABLE WHILE BRAKING. NLM
I HAD TIRE SEPARATION IN APRIL OF 2000 ON INTERSTATE 95 IN MELBOURNE, FLORIDA. I IMMEDIATELY GOT OFF THE ROAD. THERE WERE NO INJURIES TO MYSELF OR ANY OTHER VEHICLE/PERSON. THE RIGHT REAR TIRE WAS THE ONE THAT SEPARATED AND I REPLACED IT WITH ANOTHER ATX. I CURRENTLY HAVE ALL ATX TIRES AND WILL HAVE ALL TIRES REPLACED THIS WEEKEND.( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: P235/75R15 )

CONSUMER TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER BECAUSE IT WASN'T SHIFTING. DEALER SAID TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. CONSUMER HAS 70,000 MILES ON TRUCK, AND IT WAS SERVICED ON TIME. ALSO TOLD THAT THE TRUCK NEEDE NEW SHOCKS, BALL JOINTS, AND TIE-RODS. VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN DRIVEN OFF-ROAD OR IN A HARSH MANNER. *AK
HATCHBACK HYDRAULIC CYLINDERS BROKE OFF THE FROM TOP RIGHT HAND CORNER OF THE DOOR. ALSO, BACK DOOR WON'T STAY UP BECAUSE HYDRAULIC CYLINDERS BROKE OFF.
