PE00020, TIRE TREAD SEPARATION: WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH, TREAD ON THE REAR PASSENGER'S SIDE TIRE CAME OFF. DRIVER WAS ABLE TO CONTROL TRUCK, AND WAS NOT INJURED. TIRE WAS A WILDERSNESS AT, P23575R15, DOT # W2HL. NOT ORIGINAL TIRE EQUIPMENT. TIRE WAS TAKEN TO A FORD DEALERSHIP. OWNER WAS TOLD THAT IT WOULD BE 2 /1/2 WEEKS BEFORE TIRE COULD BE REPLACED. OWNER PURCHASED OTHER TIRES AT SAMS.*AK
DRIVE TRAIN LOCKED UP CAUSING THE REAR WHEELS TO LOCK UP. THE FRONT WHEELS MAY ALSO HAVE LOCKED UP, BUT UNKNOWN AT THIS TIME. TOTAL LOSS OF CONTROL OF VEHICLE CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SLIDE SIDEWAYS FROM THE LEFT HAND PASSING LANE ACROSS TRAFFIC TO THE RIGHT, HITTING SHOULDER AND ROLLING OVER ONE AND ONE HALF TIMES.
WHEN VEH WENT TO SIDE OF ROAD, THERE WAS NO SHOULDER AND IT WENT DIRECTLY OVER AND ROLLED. HE HAD TRIED TO STEER BACK ONTO ROAD, BUT COULDNT. FIRESTONE TIRES:ATX P235/75/R15. ID IS CLAIMING THEY MAY HAVE CAUSED HIM TO STEER VEHICLE OFF THE ROAD. (CLAIM#25-5425-227) *MW

HYDRAULIC LIFTGATE WELD CYNLINDER HATCH UNEXPECTEDLY CAME DOWN ON CONSUMER'S HEAD. *AK
CAR DIES AT ANY SPEED, ABOUT 10 TO 15 MINUTES AFTER STARTING. MUST WAIT ABOUT 5 MINUTES BEFORE RESTARTING. OCCURS AT ANY SPEED, BUT WE NOTICE IT ON DAMP OR RAINY DAYS. *AK
THIS VEHICLE WILL STOP RUNNING, NO SPUTTERING, JUST LOSE POWER, AT ANY SPEED, AT ANY TIME DURING OPERATION. ONCE, VEHICLE EVEN RESET THE RADIO STATIONS, AS IF THE BATTERY HAD BEEN DISCONNECTED DURING SERVICE. THERE IS NEVER AN INDICATION THAT THE VEHICLE IS GOING TO QUIT. IT THEN TAKES ABOUT 1-2 MINUTES TO START. THE ENGINE WILL TURN OVER, BUT WILL NOT START UNTIL YOU WAIT, WITH THE KEY OFF, FOR THE PROPER AMOUNT OF TIME. THE RADIO STILL WORKS, ALL ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS STILL OPERATE. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING SINCE I GOT THE VEHICLE. I HAVE WRITTEN TO YOU ONCE BEFORE CONCERNING THIS SUBJECT, BUT NEVER HEARD BACK. FAILED JUST LIKE THE RECALLED TIRES, BUT NOT COVERED BY RECALL. TRAVELING APROX 65MPH AND ALL TREAD CAME OFF TIRE. APROX 30,000 MILES WITH PLENTY OF TREAD LEFT. THE TIRE DID NOT LOOSE PRESSURE AND WE WERE ABLE TO COME TO A SAFE STOP. WE FEEL THE FIRESTONE PROBLEM MAY COVER MANY MORE TIRES THAN COVERED IN RECALL. WHILE DRIVING 50MPH VEHICLE STARTED SHAKING. LATER HEARD A LOUD BANG. RIGHT FRONT TIRE'S TREAD HAD SEPARATED. HAD HIT THE GUT, HOLDING THE LIGHTS WHICH FELL OUT. REPLACED THE TIRE WITH THE SPARE. ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS THE TREAD SEPARATED FROM MY TIRE. THIS CAUSED THE SUV TO LOSE CONTROL AND SUSTAINED BODY DAMAGE. THE FIRST OCCURANCE WAS 60 DAYS AGO, BEFORE I KNEW THERE WAS A PROBLEM. *AK( DOT NUMBER: )
I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY, AT ABOUT 65MPH, AND CHANGING LANES WHEN THE TRUCK STARTED TO SHAKE. THEN THERE WAS A LOUD SOUND AND PART OF THE LEFT FRONT TIRE STRIPPED OFF AND FLEW UP HITTING THE SIDE MOLDING OF THE CAR DAMAGING THE PLASTIC PLATE. THE TRUCK WAS JERKED ONTO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD AND I STOPPED IN THE GRASS. WHEN I WENT TO FIRESTONE I WAS TOLD BY MIKE CROWSON, THE MANAGING PARTNER OF THE FIRESTONE IN ALLEN, TX, THAT MY TIRES WERE TOO OLD AND "UNLESS I WANTED THE SAME THING TO HAPPEN TO THE OTHERS THAT I NEED TO REPLACE THEM". HE ALSO SAID THEY WERE NOT COVERED IN THE RECALL SO HE WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING FOR ME EVEN THOUGH I HAVE LESS THAN 46,000 MILE ON MY CAR AND THE TIRES STILL HAVE GOOD TREAD ON THEM.( DOT NUMBER: W2UU1MX384 TIRE SIZE: P225/70R15 )
CONSUMER HAD TO REPLACE TIRES TWICE BECAUSE THEY BECAME FLAT, AND AT ANOTHER TIME HAD A BLOWOUT. *AK ONE OF THE TIRES WOULD NOT HOLD AIR AND THE OTHER HAD A BIG FLAT. *YH
IN AUGUST OF 1999 WE WERE TRAVELLING ON I-80 FROM HASTINGS TO LINCOLN, NE WHEN WE HEARD A LOUD NOISE FROM THE BACK OF THE CAR. WE STOPPED, AND UPON INSPECTION, WE FOUND THAT A CHUNK OF TREAD HAD BLOWN OFF OF OUR RIGHT REAR TIRE. WHEN WE GOT HOME, WE HAD THE TIRE STORE REPLACE THAT TIRE AND THE NEXT WORST ONE. THE STAFF AT THE TIRE STORE SAID THAT THE OTHER TIRE BEING REPLACED ALSO HAD A BUBBLE AND WAS NOT FAR FROM SEPARATING ALSO. WE DIDN'T HINK MUCH MORE ABOUT IT. THEN, ON 8/2/99, WE ARE AGAIN ON I-80 HEADED FROM HASTINGS TO OMAHA. WE NOTICE THAT THE CAR IS SHIMMYING/VIBRATING WITH INCREASING MAGNITUDE. WHEN WE STOP TO INSPECT, WE NOTICE THAT THERE ARE NO FLATS, BUT THAT THE TREAD OF THE ONE TIRE IS BEGINNING TO SEPARATE, SO WE CHANGE IT. IT IS ANOTHER FIRESTONE ATX. THAT NIGHT, IN OUR HOTEL ROOM, WE OPEN THE PAPER TO READ THAT THERE SEEMS TO BE A TROUBLESOME TREND WITH FIRESTONE ATX TIRES ON THE FORD EXPLORER. TRANSMISSION WILL NOT SHIFT PROPERLY, MECHANIC SAYS THAT IT WILL EVENTUALLY FAIL COMPLETELY, AND THE TRANSMISSION NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THIS IS NOT AN UNUSUAL OCCURANCE FOR A 1994 FORD EXPLORER. *AK
THE TIRE TREAD ON TWO OF MY FOUR TIRES BEGAN TO SEPARATE TO THE POINT THAT THE STEEL CORDS WERE SHOWING THROUGH. SMALL PIECES OF RUBBER WERE MISSING AND OTHER PIECES WERE LOOSE AND READY TO SEPERATE. THE CONDITION WAS NOTICED DURING NORMAL TIRE ROTATION AFTER A TRIP DURING VERY HOT WEATHER. THIS IS THE SECOND SET OF TIRES THAT HAVE FAILED. ANOTHER SET WAS REPLACED FOR THE SAME CONDITION 2 YEARS AGO. BOTH TIMES AFTER THE HOT SUMMER MONTHS. MY FAMILY AND I ARE VERY FORTUNATE THE TREAD DID NOT SEPERATE WHILE WE WERE TOWING THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS AND THE CONDITION NOTED DURING NORMAL TIRE ROTATION. THE TREAD SEPARATED FROM THE TIRE WHILE WE WERE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. WE IMMEDIATELY PURCHASED NEW FIRESTONE WILDERNESS HT TIRES AND THEN I HEARD OF THE ACCIDENTS ETC.. SO, NOW I WANT TO SEE IF THERE IS ANYWAY TO RETURN MY TIRES AND BUY A DIFFERENT BRAND. WE HAD PREVIOUS PROBLEM WITH THE ATX HAVING UNEVEN WEAR DESPITE PROPER MAINTENCE AND FIRESTONE JUST SAID TO ROTATE THEM IN A SPECIFIC WAY AND NOT TO WORRY AND THEN THE TIRE BLEW, NOT THE SAME TIRE WITH UNEVEN WEAR. TOOK TO TIRE DEALER & MECHANIC INDICATED THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE WAS DELAMINATED. TREAD WAS SEPARATING, BUT NOT COMPLETELY. HAD THE ORIGINIAL TIRE WITH 63,000 MILES ON IT & WAS REPLACED WITH ANOTHER. WE WERE DRIVING ON I-44 BETWEEN ADAIR, OKLAHOMA AND TULSA, OKLAHOMA. OUR TRAVELING SPEED WAS 75 MILES PER HOUR. WITHOUT WARNING THE LEFT REAR TIRE LOST ALL TREAD CAUSING OUR 1994 FORD EXPLORER TO FISH-TAIL OUT OF CONTROL. WE SLID OFF THE HIGHWAY AND HIT HIGHWAY MILE-MARKER SIGN 260. OUR EXPLORER CONINTUED TO SLIDE OFF THE HIGHWAY MISSING A GUARDRAIL BY LESS THAN 3 FEET. AT THE TIME, WE WERE SLIDING SIDEWAYS AROUND 40 MPH. HITTING THE GUARDRAIL WOULD HAVE PUT THE TRUCK INTO A END-OVER-END ROLL. MY WIFE, TWO KIDS AND MYSELF YOUR BLESSED TO HAVE MISSED IT. THE TRUCK CAME TO A STOP 150 YARDS LATER AND 40 YARDS DOWN A DITCH. THE FIRESTONE ATX TIRE THAT FAILED IS STILL COMPLETELY INFLATED JUST WITHOUT ANY TREAD. WE HAVE NOTIFIED FIRESTONE AND THEY WANT US TO SHIP THE TIRE TO NASHVILLE AT YOUR EXPENSE. AUGUST 20, 2000 ON NOVEMBER 12TH, 1999 I PURCHASED A 1994 FORD EXPLORER EDDIE BAUER WHICH IS EQUIPPED WITH FIRESTONE RADIAL ATX, P235/75R15 M+S, DOT # VNHL- 1MO TIRES. I DO NOT DRIVE THAT FAST IN THE WINTER, BUT THIS SPRING I NOTICED THAT EVERY TIME WHEN I WENT TO SPEED UP TO 55, 60 OR 65, THE EXPLORER WOULD START TO SHAKE REAL BAD. BEAR IN MIND THAT THESE SPEEDS ARE ON THE HIGHWAY OR NY THRUWAY. IN JUNE I TOOK MY EXPLORER TO WAL-MART TIRE & LUBE EXPRESS TO HAVE MY TIRES BALANCED AND FOUND OUT THAT I HAD THREE GOOD TIRES AND ONE BAD ONE. THIS WAS WAY BEFORE THE RECALL NOTICES IN THE PAPERS. WAL-MART BALANCED MY TIRES FOR NOTHING THAT DAY, EXPLAINING THAT MY TIRES WERE THE PROBLEM. ON JULY 1, 2000, I WENT BACK TO WAL-MART AND HAD THEM REPLACE THE TWO BACK FIRESTONE RADIAL ATX'S WITH GOODYEAR ALL SEASON TRACKER TIRES. I HAVE THE FIRESTONE RADIAL ATX P235/75R15 DOT # VNHL-1MO'S, WHICH WAL-MART TOOK OFF. I HAVE BEEN READING THE NEWS PAPER AND LISTENING TO THE NEWS STATIONS ABOUT THE RECALL ON THE FIRESTONE TIRES AND MY FIRESTONE RADIAL ATX, P235/75R15, DOT # VNHL-1MO ARE NOT ON THE LIST. I'M NOT EVERY HAPPY ABOUT IT AND DON'T FEEL 100% PERCENT COMFORTABLE THAT THOSE TIRES ARE ON MY EXPLORER. WE WERE GOING ON VACATION AND 2 TIRES HAD THE TREAD PEELED OFF AND THE 3RD HAD A BUBBLE READY TO BLOW. FAMILY OF 4, TWO ADULTS AND 2 CHILDREN.
