FIRESTONE WILDERNESS/AT P25570R16 TIRES ON THIS VEHICLE DEVELOPED A BUBBLE ON THE SIDE OF THE TIRE, INSIDE TREAD WHILE TRAVELING AT 60 MPH, AND A SMALL PIECE OF ANOTHER TIRE FELL OUT OF THE SIDEWALL. DEALER HAS REPLACED THE TIRES.*AK *SLC
PE00020, TIRE TREAD SEPARATION: WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 60 MPH, TREAD ON THE DRIVER'S REAR SIDE TIRE CAME OFF, CAUSING VEHICLE TO ROLL OVER. DRIVER WAS ALONE AND WAS NOT INJURED. TIRE SIZE P25570R16. VEHICLE WAS TOTALLED. FIRESTONE WAS NOTIFIED THROUGH E-MAIL ABOUT THE TIRE. THERE WAS NO REPONSE FROM FIRESTONE. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION.*AK

I HAVE A 1995 EXPLORER THAT HAS HAD A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WITH ONLY 42000 MILES IT WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT IT NEEDED A REBULD.. BUT TO MY DISMAY TO FIND OUT THAT IT HAD PREMATURE WEAR ON THE TORQUE CONVERTER AND ON THE SERVO PISTON.. I KNOW THAT THIS IS AN ON GOING PROBLEM WITH FORD EXPLORER TRANSMISSIONS, I HOPE THAT SOMETHING WILL BE DONE ABOUT IT CAUSE AS A CONSUMER IT IS VERY FRUSTRATING KNOWING THAT MANY PEOPLE HAVE PUT IN 3 OR 4 TRANSMISSIONS BEFORE 100,000 MILES.. WHENEVER MY WIFE COMPLAINED ABOUT THE BRAKE PEDAL PULSATING/VIBRATING, I TOLD HER THATS NORMAL BECAUSE IT'S THE ABS. SHE SAID IT DIDN'T DO IT ALL THE TIME AND THE FEW TIMES I DROVE HER EXPLORER TO FIND OUT WHAT SHE WAS TALKING ABOUT IT DID NOT ACT UP. I JUST RECENTLY BOUGHT ME A VEHICLE SHE FELT COMFORTABLE DRIVING AND I TOOK HER EXPLORER FOR A WEEK. THE ABS ACTED UP DURING A NORMAL STOP AND I COMPLETELY WENT THROUGH A STOP SIGN. I WOULD LIKE TO ADD THAT WE HAVE ONLY BEEN NOTIFIED OF ONE RECALL ON THE EXPLORER AND THAT WAS MANY YEARS AGO.*AK
WHILE DRIVNG ON A GRAVEL ROAD THE TIRES SHREDDED AND THE VEHICLE ROLLED OVER 3 TIMES, THE INFANT IN THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE ONLY SUSTAINED A CUT ON THE LEG THE DRIVER SUSTAIN INJURIES TO THE HEAD, NECK AND ARMS (FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT 15"). NLM
FORD DEALER THAT REPAIRED THE DAMAGE TO THE FORD ADVISED ME THAT THE TREAD HAD SEPERATED AND BLOWN THE TIRE APART. HE POINTED OUT THAT THE THREE REMAING TIRES HAD A CRACK AROUND THE TIES WHERE THE TREAD ATTACHES TO THE BODY, AND SUGESSTED THAT I TAKE THE CAR TO FIRESTONE FOR REPLACEMENT AS THEY WERE DEFECTIVE. THE FIRESTONE MGR EXAMINED MY TIRES AND AGREED THAT ALL FOUR SHOULD B REPLACED. HE STATED THAT HE WOULD HAVE TO ORDER THEM AND WOULD CALL ME WHEN THE CAME IN. THE TIRES CAME IN AND WERE INSTALLED JUNE 28 1999. FIRESTONE DID NOT REPLACE THE BLOWN TIRE AT NO CHARGE BUT GAVE ME AN ADJUSTED PRICE CHARGING ME 59.99 FOR EACH OF 4 TIRES PLUS BALANCE,NEW VALVE STEMS,TIRE DISPOSAL FEE,ROAD HAZARD WARRANTY,PLS SHOP SUPPLYS. TOTAL ADJUSTED PRICE 359.49 I WAS UNAWARE AT THE TIME OF THE PROBLEM FIRESTONE WAS HAVING OR I WOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN AGREEABLE TO THAT DEAL. I HAVE COPY OF TIRE INVOICES, WORK PERFORMED BYJOHNSON BROTHERS FORD AND ROAD SERVICE TO PLACE SPARE ON AT TIME OF ACCIDENT. CONSUMER WAS TRAVELING ABOUT 55MPH ON FREEWAY AND WAS GOING UNDER/OVER PATH WHEN HE HEARD A NOISE AND VEHICLE STARTED TO VIBRATE. THEN, HE PULLED OVER AND NOTICED THAT TREAD HAD SEPARATED FROM TIRES. THE VEHICLE HAS FIRESTONE TIRES ATX #@P235-/75RR15105S DOT W2HL1PN. *AK
LINK THAT GOES TO STABILIZER BAR AND LOWER CONTROL ARM BROKE WHICH MAY CAUSE A LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL. LINKS ARE NOW PRODUCED LARGER AND BIGGER. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER INFORMATION. *AK
ONE OF ORIGINALLY INSTALLED 16 " FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT TIRES IN FORD EXPLORE BLEW OUT PREMATUARLY WHEN WE WERE DRIVING ON THE SOUTH-BOUND OF I-95 AT CONNETICUT ON MAY 10, 1999. FORTUNATELY, NO ACCIDENT WAS INVOLVED AND NO ONE WAS INJURED. WE JUST REPLACED BROCKEN TIRE TO A NEW ONE AT NEARBY TIRE SHOP. I HAVE NOT REPORTED TO ANYONE THEN. THIS TIRE FAILURE WAS OBVIOUSLY PREMATURE TIRE FAILURE, WHICH IS THE SAME TO THE ONE CURRENTLY RECALLED ON FIRESTONE TIRES. I BROUGHT THE CAR FOR INSPECTION AT A FORD DEALER IN VIRGINIA IN LATE AUGUST, BUT THEY REJECTED TO REPLACE IT SINCE THIS IS 16 INCH TIRE AND ONLY 15 INCH TIRES WERE RECALLED THEN. DRIVER'S SIDE SEAT BUCKLES WOULD NOT UNLATCH. TWO INCIDENTS ON SAME DAY WHEN I HAD TO MANIPULATE BUCKLE TONGUE AND BOTTOM FOR APPROX. 5 MINS. TO GET BUCKLE TO RELEASE.
THE INTERIOR READ DOOR LATCHES ARE NOT OPERABLE FROM THE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE REAR DOORS CAN ONLY BE OPENED FROM THE OUTSIDE OF TEH VEHICLE. THERE IS A CHILD SAFETY MECHANISM WHICH PROVIDES THIS FUNCTION, BUT IT IS NOT ENGAGED ON EITHER DOOR. IT APPEARS THAT BOTH OF THE INTERIOR DOOR HANDLE MECHANISMS ARE DEFECTIVE. I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AS A PASSENGER IN THE REAR SEATS COULD BECOME TRAPPED WITH IN THE VEHICLE. I HAVE NEVER SEEN A DOOR HANDLE FAIL IN ALL MY YEARS OF DRIVING AND WORKING ON AUTOMOBILES, MUCH LESS TWO ON ONE VEHICLE. THANK YOU.
ON APRIL 20, 1999 I HAD MY 45,00 MILE SERVICE PERFORMED AT A LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP IN DALLAS, TX ON OUR '95 FORD EXPLORER XLT. DURING THAT SERVICE VISIT THE TECHNICIAN NOTED THE STEEL CORE EXPOSED ON THE LEFT REAR TIRE; AFTER CLOSE EXAMINATION OF THE DEFECTIVE TIRES IT WAS NOTED THAT IT APPEARED THAT THE TIRE HAD BLISTERED AND BURST THE OUTER CORE. SINCE THIS WAS WELL BEFORE (16 MONTHS AGO) THE FIRESTONE AXT RECALL OUR ONLY RECOURSE WAS TO PLACE THE TIRE(S). IN A EFFORT TO NOT PUT MYSELF OR FAMILY AT RISK WE ELECTED TO "BIT- THE-BULLET" AND PURCHASED A COMPLETE SET OF NEW MICHELIN TIRES AT SAM'S WHOLESALE STORE. I WISH TO BE REIMBURSED ALONG WITH THE OTHER CUSTOMERS WHO ARE OFFERED REPLACEMENT TIRES OR BEING REIMBURSED FOR TIRES PURCHASED AFTER JANUARY 1, 2000. DUE TO THE DEFECTIVE COMPUTER SYSTEM, FOR WHICH THERE IS A SERVICE BULLETIN, TRANSMISSION MALFUNCTIONED, CAUSING VEHICLE TO STALL WHILE DRIVING. MAY RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT. *AK

REAR CENTER TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY HAD COMPLETE FAILURE; DEALER SAYS IT WILL COST BETWEEN $250 AND $300 TO REPLACE. I PRESUME IT IS A SAFETY PROBLEM SINCE I FAILED ANNUAL INSPECTION DUE TO THE FAILURE OF THIS COMPONENT. ARE THERE OTHER REPORTS OF SIMILAR FAILURES? I AM UPSET THAT I HAVE TO PAY SO MUCH FOR A COMPONENT THAT SHOULD HAVE LASTED MORE THAN 3.5 YEARS. *AK
THE LEFT REAR TIRE CAME LOOSE CAUSING THE TIRE TO BLOWOUT, THE DRIVER APPLIED THE BRAKES AND LOST CONTROL AND VEERED PARTIALLY TO THE CENTER MEDIAN, THE DRIVER OVERCORRECTED TO THE RIGHT WHICH TURNED THE VEHICLE AT A SIDEWAY ANGLE THEN BECAME AIRBORNE AND LANDED ON ITS TOP RIGHT SIDE, THE VEHICLE THEN SLID AND ROLLED ABOUT 5 TIMES ACROSS THE ROAD BEFORE COMING TO REST ON ITS TOP, BOTH REAR PASSENGERS WERE EJECTED, THE TWO LEFT SIDE TIRES WERE DETACHED FROM THE AXLES AT REST(TEXAS PEACE OFFICERS ACCIDENT REPORT, BRIDGESTONE/FIRESTONE, P235/75R15, RADIAL ATX M/S, W2HL1PM215, LEFT REAR). ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT, TREAD IS IN GOOD CONDITION, BUT ALL FOUR TIRES HAVE DEVELOPED CRACKS AROUND SIDEWALL. TIRE SIZE P25570R16, WILDERNESS AT. *AK DOTVNCU, CONSUMER HAS HAD 2 FLAT TIRES. *SLC
THE TRANSMISSION IS CURRENTLY BEING REBUILT. A DEFECTIVE PART ALLOWED TRANSMISSION FLUID TO LEAK INTO THE RADIATOR, AND RADIATOR FLUID TO LEAK INTO THE TRANSMISSION. THE RADIATOR MUST BE REPLACED, AND THE TRANSMISSION REBUILT. I ONLY HAVE LESS THAN 72,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. I DID NOT PURCHASE THE EXTENDED WARRANTY WHEN I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE BECAUSE AT A COST OF OVER $22,000, I DID NOT THINK ANYTHING SHOULD GO WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. I WOULD LIKE FORD TO PAY FOR MY AUTO REPAIRS, AND A RECALL TO GO INTO EFFECT SO THAT OTHERS WITH THIS CAR DO NOT HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE SAME EXPERIENCE. 100,000 MILES IS NOT UNREASONABLE TO EXPECT A CAR'S MAJOR COMPONENTS TO LAST. *AK

WHILE DRIVING AND APPLYING GAS PEDAL, GAS PEDAL GETS STUCK, CAUSING VEHICLE TO ACCELERATE AND KEEP GOING UNTIL THE CONSUMER IS ABLE TO PULL GAS PEDAL UP WITH HER FOOT IN ORDER TO GET VEHICLE TO SLOW DOWN. *AK *ML
SUSPENSION LINK FROM THE CONTROL ARM TO THE STABILIZER BAR FELL OFF CAUSING VIBRATION AND DAMAGE TO OTHER FRONT COMPONENTS. *YC
WHILE THIS BLOWOUT DID NOT CAUSE INJURY, DEATH OR PROPERTY DAMAGE IT IS OF NOTE THAT THE EXPLORER SPUN VIOLENTLY LEFT AND RIGHT. THE TIRE TREAD SEPARATED AND THE LOW SPEED AND WET ROADS PREVENTED GREATER DAMAGES. THE MAINTAINED TIRE PRESSURE WAS A CONSTANT 30 PSI OR 4 PSI ABOVE FORD SPECIFICATIONS. THE CONSUMER REQUESTED REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE TWO SWAY BARS THAT WERE REPLACED PRIOR TO RECALL NOTICE 00V-402. NLM
I BELIEVE THIS TRUCK WAS INVOLVED IN A ROLLOVER ACCIDENT BEFORE I PURCHASED IT. I THINK THIS BECAUSE OF THE BAD FIBERGLASS WORK ON THE ROOF AND BAD PAINT JOB. I ALSO BELIEVE THIS BECAUSE OF ALL OF THE FRONT END PROBLEMS I HAVE ENCOUNTERED. I BELIEVE ONCE THIS TRUCK IS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT THERE IS NO REPAIR TO MAKE IT SAFE AGAIN. FORD SUPPOSELY REPLACED OUR TRANSMISSION IN JAN. 1999 DUE TO A DEFECT THEY COULD NOT EXPLAIN, I PAID $550.00, THE DEALER SUPPOSELY PAID $550.00 AND FORD WAS WARRANTYING THE REMAINDER. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON THE VEHICLE 18 DEC, 2000 . I TOLD THEM THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT SHIFTING OUT CORRECTLY. SO NOT TO DAMAGE THE VEHICLE I HAD IT TOWED TO OUR FORD SERVICE DEPARTMENT. FORD INSTALLED AN AIT SENSOR AT A COST OF $293.78. THE VEHICLE WAS READY TO PICK UP ON THE 19 DEC, 2000. DUE TO THE WEATHER WE DID NOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE FOR SEVERAL DAYS, THEN AFTER ABOUT 15 MILES THE O/D OFF INDICATOR STARTED FLASHING. I AGAIN CALLED FORD. I WAS TOLD THAT WE COULD DRIVE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP. I TALKED WITH FRED SIZEMORE, SERVICE MANAGER SEVERAL TIMES ABOUT THE STATUS OF THE VEHICLE. HE TOLD ME THAT FORD WAS BRINGING IN A SPECIAL COMPUTER TO SEE IF THEY COULD FIND THE PROBLEM. FINALLY ON DEC. 29 FRED TOLD ME THAT THE TRANSMISSION AGAIN WAS OUT AND THAT HE WAS TALKING WITH FORD ABOUT THE PROBLEM. ON TUESDAY, 2 JANUARY FRED CALLED TO TELL ME THAT FORD WOULD NOT STAND BEHIND THE NEW TRANSMISSION. THE PERSON THAT FRED SPOKE WITH SAID "THERE COMES A TIME WHEN THE CONSUMER HAS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE VEHICLE". I SPOKE WITH LOVIA AT FORD COSTOMER ASSISTANCE THIS MORNING. SHE ADVISED ME THAT FORD HAD A 1 YEAR/12,000 MILE WARRANTY ON PARTS AND WE HAD EXCEEDED THAT. I TOLD HER THAT THIS WAS "SUPPOSELY" A NEW TRANSMISSION AND THAT IT SHOULD HAVE THE SAME WARRANTY AS A NEW TRANSMISSION. ALL SERVICE ON THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN DONE AT THE DEALER AND WE HAD THE RECORDS TO SHOW THAT WE HAD PAID FOR THE SERVICING. I DON'T KNOW THAT THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE HAS EVER WORKED CORRECTLY IN THIS CAR - I JUST GUESSED DATES AND MILEAGE, BUT I HAVE HAD THE CAR SINCE 1997 (32,000 MILES) AND IT HAS NEVER WORKED CORRECTLY. THIS IS MY SECOND FORD EXPLORER WITH THIS PROBLEM. FURTHERMORE, I RECENTLY SPOKE WITH A FRIEND WHO HAD THE SAME PROBLEM IN HIS 1997 FORD EXPLORER. I DO NOT THINK THIS PROBLEM IS BEING REPORTED BECAUSE IT IS NOT OBVIOUS WHEN THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE FAILS.*AK
WHEN DRIVING CONSUMER CAN SMELL GAS IN THE VEHICLE. TOOK VEHICLE FOR SERVICE AND THE DEALER NOTICED THAT THERE WAS SPLIT AT THE SEAM OF THE GAS TANK. IF THE CONSUMER WERE TO HIT A BUMP OR A HARD OBJECT, THE VEHICLE MIGHT BLOW UP WHILE DRIVING. *AK
BOTH THE FRONT LEFT AND FRONT RIGHT SWAY BAR LINKS HAVE FAILED ON THIS VEHICLE. THE LINKS HAVE SIMPLY FALLEN OFF OF THE VEHICLE. I SAW AN ARTICLE IN THE NEWSPAPER THAT NHTSA WAS INVESTIGATING THIS COMPONENT ON THE 1995 EXPLORER AND WISHED TO PROVIDE MY INFORMATION AS WELL. *AK
MY CONCERN IS THAT EVERYTIME WE TAKE OUR EXPLORER ON A ROAD TRIP WE GET A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. IT WILL COME ON AT THE FIRST 200 MILES OF THE TRIP. I'VE PULLED OVER EVERYTIME IT HAS HAPPENED AND CHECKED ALL THE SERVICES ON IT. I ALWAYS FOUND EVERYTHING IS WHERE IT SHOULD BE. WHEN WE HAVE DEPARTED FROM EVERY STOP TO FILL UP. THE LIGHT COMES BACK ON RIGHT AT 2MI. I TOOK THE VEHICLE IN TO HAVE THE COMPUTER CHECKED FOR CODES. EVERYTIME THEY SAY IT'S THE INTAKE
ACCELERATOR GOT STUCK, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO ACCELERATE. DRIVER COULD NOT STOP VEHICLE, NOT EVEN WITH THE BRAKES. VEHICLE ENDED UP HITTING ANOTHER AUTOMOBILE IN ORDER TO STOP. *AK
INITIAL FAILURE DUE TO VERY MINOR DIP IN I-80 FROM BRIDGE TO ASPAULT TRANSITION. FAILURE RESULTED IN UNCONTROLLABLE VEHICLE OSCILLATION AND SUBSEQUENT SPIN-OUT INCLUDING TIRE, BUMPER AND MINOR INJURIES FROM SPIN. VEHICLE WAS UNSTABLE AND WOULD START OSCILLATIONS ABOVE 30 MPH. A SECOND SPIN-OUT OCCURRED WHEN TAKING VEHICLE IN FOR INSPECTION AT AROUND 35 MPH - NO DAMAGE FROM ACCIDENT. LIGHTER POPPED OUT, KNOB AND COIL SEPARATED FROM EACH OTHER, HEATING ELEMENT STUCK INSIDE LIGHTER, CAUSING AN ELECTRICAL SHORT. DEALER NOTIFIED/ REPAIRED, BUT REFUSED TO GIVE WORK ORDER RECEIPT. *AK
