PE 00020: WHILE DRIVING 75MPH VEHICLE STARTED TO VIBRATE. WAS PULLING TO SIDE WHEN A LOUD EXPLOSION WAS HEARD. LOST CONTROL OF VEHICLE, WENT TOWARDS MEDIAN & HIT GUARDRAIL. AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. WHEN VEHICLE FINALLY STOPPED, GOT OUT & CHECKED. NOTICED NO TREAD ON LEFT REAR TIRE. NO SERIOUS INJURY. FIRESTONE WILDERNESS, SIZE P235/75R15 WITH 61,000 MILES ON IT. DID NOT HAVE THE TIRE.*AK
WHILE DRIVING APROX, 20 MPH MY LEFT REAR TIRE ALL OF A SUDDEN BLEW OUT. I DID NOT OR HAD NOT RUN OVER ANYTHING IN THE ROAD. I THINK THE RECALL ON THE WILDERNESS AT TIRE SOULD INCLUDE ALL TIRE OF THE MAKE NOT JUST THOSE OUT OF THE DECATUR, IL PLANT. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING AND IT SEEMS THAT KNOW ONE REALY CARES UNLESS YOU HAVE THE TIRE WITH HAVE THE VD DOT # ON THEM. THE MOST REPORTS HAVE COME FORM THAT PLANT BUT IT IS THE SAME TIRE WETHER IT CAME FORM IL,OR GA OR WHERE EVER THAT TIRE IS MADE. I AM SURE IT WOULD BE APPRECIATED BY ALL WHO OWN THESE TIRE IF U MADE IT A TOTAL RECALL REGARDLESS OF THE PLANT THE TIRE CAME FROM. I HAVE THE FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT TIRES WITH THE CODE VN MADE IN CANADA. I TOOK THE CAR TO FIRESTONE AND THEY SAID THE TIRES ARE SAFE, BUT, THERE IS A HAIR LINE CRACK ALL AROUBD THE TIRES (ALL FOUR) ON THE SIDE NEAR THE TOP OF THE TREAD AREA. THIS LOOKS LIKE ALL THE PICTURES OF THE TIRE SEPERATION THAT HAVE BEEN IN THE NEWSPAPERS AND TV. AFTER INSPECTION OF VEHICLE IT WAS FOUND THAT TWO OF THE FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT TIRES HAD CRACKS AROUND THE CIRCUMFERENCE OF THE TIRE (DOT CODE W2HL), CONSUMER PURCHASED FOUR NEW NON-FIRESTONE TIRES AND REQUEST REIMBURSEMWNT. NLM
SIDEWALLS CRACKED ON ALL FOUR TIRES, WAS TOLD BY FIRESTONE TO HAVE THEM INSPECTED AND WHEN I WENT TO FIRESTONE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT IF THE TIRES WERE FOUND TO BE UNSAFE,THE BEST THEY COULD DO IS TAKE THE MILAGE INTO CONSIDERATION AND PRORATE A NEW SET OF TIRES.( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: P255/70R16 )

AFTER ABOUT 40000 MILES ON THE TIRES I STARTED HAVING TROUBLES STEERING THE CAR. I HAD THE ALIGNMENT CHECKED SEVERAL TIMES. IT WAS ALWAYS OKAY. I WAS HAVING SO MUCH TROUBLE THAT I WORE SOME OF THE COVERING OFF THE STEERING WHEEL. FINALLY MY FORD DEALER SAID IT LOOKED AS IF I WAS HAVING TREAD SEPERATION. HE SHOWED ME AND I WENT TO MY LOCAL FIRESTONE DEALER. HE SAID TREAD SEPERATION WAS NOT A PROBLEM WITH THEIR TIRES EVEN THOUGH I SHOWED HIM WHERE IT WAS STARTING TO COME OFF. HE CHECK THE ALIGNMENT, CHANGED IT A LITTLE AND SWITCHED MY FRONT TIRES-LEFT TO RIGHT. IT FELT OKAY, BUT I DIDN'T LIKE WHAT I HEARD SO I WENT TO MY FORD DEALER AND HAD HIM REPLACE THE TIRES. WHILE VEHICLE WAS PARKED CONSUMER NOTICED THAT FRONT LEFT TIRE WHICH WAS AN FIRESTONE WILDERNESS/AT P23575R/15 HAD THREE LOOSE BELTS COMING OUT OF IT. FIRESTONE HAS BEEN CONTACTED.*AK
THESE TIRES ARE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT FORD EXPLORER TIRES WITH 31,000 MILES. THESE TIRES ARE NOT LISTED IN THE RECALL. THESE TIRES ALL SHOW VERY OBVIOUS SEPERATION CRACKING AROUND THE CIRCUMFERANCE OF THE TIRE ABOUT 3/4" DOWN FROM THE FLAT OF THE TREAD. THE CRACKS ARE ON BOTH THE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE SIDEWALL. I HAVE CONTACTED THE LOCAL FIRESTONE STORE, MANAGER SHANE MCGRANE, WHO AGREED THE TIRES DID NOT LOOK QUITE RIGHT, BUT REFUSED TO DO ANYTHING SAYING THAT HE IS A INDEPENDANT DEALER FOR FIRESTONE AND SINCE THE TIRES ARE NOT LISTED AS RECALL, FIRESTONE WOULD NOT REIMBURSE HIM. I THEN CONTACTED THE DICK WITHAM FORD DEALERSHIP, SHOWED THEM THE TIRES, SERVICE MANAGER, BRANT WALTERS, WHO LOOKED AT THE TIRES, AGREED THEY DID NOT LOOK QUITE RIGHT. WITHAM FORD DECIDED THEY WOULD DO NOTHING, AS THE TIRES WERE NOT ON THE RECALL LIST. THEY SUGGESTED I CONTACT FIRESTONE. I CALLED AND TALKED WITH THE IOWA DISTRICT FIRESTONE REPRESENTATIVE, HAROLD LEE, WHO WAS REALLY TOO BUSY TO TALK TO ME. HE REFERED ME TO HIS EMPLOYEE LARRY DESALVO, 319-388-6017, WHO HAS REFUSED TO RETURN MY PHONE MESSAGE CALLS. IT DOES NOT TAKE A GENIUS TO LOOK AT THE TIRES AND TELL THEY HAVE SEPERATION CRACKS, NOT WEATHER CHECKING, AND DO NOT LOOK RIGHT, HOWEVER BOTH FORD AND FIRESTONE ARE PASSING THE BUCK. THESE TIRE I BELIEVE MAY ALSO HAVE A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM. SUSPECT DAMAGE RELATED TO RECALL. TIRE MADE IN CANADA. CRACKS IN VALLEYS OF TREAD. SMALL CRACKS AROUND SIDEWALL - ALL TIRES SIMILAR. REPORTED TO FIRESTONE 3 WEEKS AGO AND THEY INDICATED OXIDATION THEN SHOWED ME 4 OTHER TIRES THAT DID NOT HAVE SIMILAR CRACKS, EXPLAINING THIS WAS NORMAL. 8/26 FIRESTONE DEALER (COLUMBIA, MD) AGREED TO REPLACE, BUT HAD TO ORDER.( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: 255R16 )
FIRESTONE/FORD NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR ALL SIZED TIRES NOT JUST THE 15 INCH TIRES. WE HAD OUR 16 INCH TIRES CHECKED BY THE FORD DEALERSHIP AND HERE ARE THERE COMMENTS ABOUT EACH TIRES: LR TIRE BAD WEAR ON OUT SIDE TREAD, RR TIRE HAS CHOPPY TREAD, RF TIRE LOW SPOT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TIRE, LF ALSO HAS LOW SPOT IN THE MIDDLE. THIS VEHICLE HAS LESS THAN 38,000 MILES AND THESE TIRES ARE USED FOR NORMAL DRIVING, THEY SHOULD NOT HAVE ALL OF THESE PROBLEMS. PLEASE RECOGNIZE THAT FIRESTONE/FORD NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR SHODDY CRAFTMANSHIP AND IT IS NOT LIMITED TO THE 15 INCH TIRES. I WENT TO MY FORD DEALER & ASKED HIM TO INSPECT MY TIRES FOR THE SAME PROBLEM AS THE 235 SERIES. HE SIAD " LOOKS JUST LIKE THE OTHERS, YOU SHOULD BE VERY CONCERNED." MY TIRES ARE CRACKING CIRCUMFERENTIALLY AROUND THE BORDER OF THE TREAD AND SIDEWALL, AS WELL AS WITH IN THE TREAD ITSELF. ALTHOUGH MY TIRES WERE NOT PRODUCED IN DECATUR, I NOTICED A DISTURBINGLY LOUD NOISE SHORTLY AFTER THE VEHICLE PURCHASE. THERE WAS A SERVICE BULLETIN ISSUED, BUT NOT FOR THAT PARTICULAR TIRE. THE NOISE HAS GOTTEN LOUDER AND THE TIRES FEEL "MUSHY" WHEN DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, EVEN THOUGH PROPERLY INFLATED. I'VE CONTACTED OUR FORD DEALERSHIPS RE: REPLACEMENT, BUT THEY CANNOT ASSIST. IT IS MY BELIEF THAT ALL THE WILDERNESS AT TIRES ARE DEFECTIVE, NOT JUST THE ONES MADE IN DECATOR. OUR TIRES WERE WEARING FROM 3 MONTHS INTO OWNING THE VECHICLE, BUT NEITHER FORD NOR FIRESTONE WOULD TAKE ANY ACTION. I BELIEVE IT'S A DESIGN FLAW! FIRESTONE SHOULD COMPENSATE OWNERS OF ALL THE TIRES. THE FOUR TIRES DID NOT FAIL AS I REPLACED THEM WHEN I NOTICED A CONTINUAL CRACK AROUND THE ENTIRE TIRE, ON BOTH SIDES OF EACH TIRE, WHICH INDICATED THE POSSIBILITY OF TIRE TREAD SEPARATION. I SHOWED THIS TO TWO DIFFERENT FIRESTONE STORES AND ONE FORD DEALER AND THEY SAID THAT THEY COULD NOT REPLACE MY TIRES UNDER THE RECALL BECAUSE THE TIRES ON MY VEHICLE DID NOT HAVE THE CODE ON THEM TO MEET THE RECALL CRITERIA. THE TIRES HAVE LARGE CRACKS WHERE THE TREAD TIES TO THE CASING AT EACH LUG. THERE IS A SEPARATION CLEAR AROUND ON BOTH SIDES OF THE TIRES WHERE THE STEEL BELT ENDS. ALL FOUR TIRES HAVE SMALL CRAZING CRACKS ALL OVER THEM. THE TREADS ALL HAVE SEVERE CRACKING THROUGHOUT. I HAD THE TIRES REMOVED FROM MY VEHICLE ON AUG. 16, 2000 DUE TO THE FIRESTONE TIRE RECALL. AT THE TIME, I DID NOT KNOW THAT JUST THE TIRES WITH DOT # VDHL WERE INVOLVED. I STILL HAVE THE TIRES, BUT I AM GOING TO HAVE THEM LOOKED AT BY THE DEALER WHERE I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE. I FEEL THAT I WAS VERY LUCKY NOT TO HAVE A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THESE TIRES WHILE THEY WERE ON MY EXPLORER. I HAVE A 97 FORD EXPLORER - THE TIRES ON MY SUV NOW ARE DIRECT FROM FIRESTONE. I JUST WANTED TO NOTE THAT FACTORY TIRES THAT I HAD ORIGINALLY DID IN FACT 'ALMOST' SPLIT. BY THE TIME I HAD THEM REPLACED (AT AROUND 50,000 MILES) THERE WAS A 6" LINE OF STEEL SHOWING THROUGH RUBBER ON THE INSIDE SIDEWALL ON THE BACK TWO TIRES. I'M VERY GLAD THAT I GOT THEM REPLACED WHEN I DID - BUT I THOUGHT THAT THIS INFORMATION MIGHT BE OF SOME HELP. THE ONLY SYMPTOM THAT I HAD WAS A SHAKE IN MY CAR ONCE I HIT 70 MPH. IF I HAD NOT DONE ANY HIGHWAY DRIVING I NEVER WOULD HAVE KNOWN ABOUT THIS UNTIL IT WAS TOO LATE. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE IN NOVEMBER OF 1998. AT THE TIME IT HAD 10,000 MILES ON IT. I NOTICED THE VEHICLE HAD WHAT SEEMED TO BE A SHUTTER OR VIBRATION. I TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THE SERVICE MANAGER DROVE WITH ME FOR MANY MILES. HE STATED THAT THIS WAS A NORMAL CHARACTERISTIC OF THE VEHICLE. EVERYTHING IS A NORMAL CHARACTERISTIC OF THE VEHICLE. I HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO A CERTIFIED TRANSMISSION REPAIR/REPLACEMENT SHOP AND HAVE FOUND THAT THIS PROBLEM IS ACTUALLY AN EMISSIONS PROBLEM, AND THAT THE COMPUTER NEEDS TO BE FLASHED TO CHANGE THE STRATEGY OF THE TORQUE CONVERTER. I WOULD LIKE THIS ISSUE ADDRESSED AS IT CAUSES MY VEHICLE TO VIBRATE AND AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THE VEHICLE FEELS VERY UNSAFE.*AK
WHILE DRIVING TIRES WOULD WOULD WEAR OUT EXCESSIVELY & WOULD FAIL TO MAINTAIN AIR IN TIRES. WOULD BE DRIVING ON THE STEEL BELT IN TIRES. FRONT TIRES WERE THE PROBLEM. TWO REAR TIRES COULD NOT MAINTAIN AIR, BUT WERE NOT WEARING EXCESSIVELY. TIRES WERE NOT RECALLED. FIRESTONE, WILDERNESS AT, P235/75R15 WITH 15,000 MILES.*AK
