PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT I HAVE NOT HAD AN INCIDENT WITH THE TIRES AS OF YET. I FORWARDED AN EMAIL TO YOUR ORGANIZATION ON 11 SEPT. 2000 TO ADVISE WHAT I THINK IS A POTENTIAL PROBLEM WITH MY CURRENT TIRES AND RECEIVED A RETURN EMAIL FROM YOU ON 12 SEPT. 2000. PER YOUR RETURN EMAIL I WAS ADVISED TO FILL OUT THE "OWNER'S QUESTIONNAIRE" FORM AND SUBMIT IT. UNFORTUNATELY CERTAIN FIELDS HAVE TO BE POPULATED, WHICH WOULD INDICATE I HAD AN INCIDENT ALREADY. THIS IS NOT THE CASE. THE TIRES I CURRENTLY HAVE ON MY 97 FORD EXPLORER ARE FIRESTONE WILDERNESS, DOT CODE VNHL, P235/75R15 105S M/S. AS I'M SURE YOU'RE AWARE THESE ARE NOT ON THE RECALL LIST BUT MY DILEMA IS THE TIRES SHOW, IN MY OPINION, SIGNS OF "TREAD SEPERATION" IDNTICAL TO THE TIRES BEING RECALLED. I DISCUSSED THIS WITH THE FORD DEALERSHIP AS WELL AS FIRESTONE ON THE PHONE AND THEY ADVISE IF THEY ARE NOT COVERED BY THE RECALL THERE'S NOTHING WE CAN DO. I'VE TAKEN DIGITAL PICTURES TO SHOW THESE LINES UNFORTUNATELY I DON'T THINK I CAN ATTACH THE PICTURES TO THIS QUESTIONNAIRE. I RECENTLY TOOK THE CAR TO A FORD DEALERSHIP TO HAVE A CHECK-UP. I KNEW THAT I WOULD NEED TO REPLACE THE TIRES SOON, BUT HAVE HAD TROUBLE FINDING REPLACEMENT TIRES DUE TO THE RECALL. THE FORD SERVICE TECH CALLED ME AT WORK TO TELL ME THAT MY STEEL THREADS WERE SHOWING THROUGH ON ONE REAR TIRE, AND THEY DID NOT HAVE ANY REPLACEMENTS FOR ME. HE RECOMMENDED THAT THEY PUT ON THE SPARE TIRE UNTIL I COULD GET NEW ONES. SINCE I KNEW THAT I WOULD BE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY FOR 120+ MILES ON LABOR DAY TOWING A HORSE TRAILER WITH MY HORSE, I DID NOT WANT TO JUST HAVE THREE WORN TIRES AND A SPARE. I STARTED CALLING AROUND AND FOUND FOUR REPLACEMENT TIRES (GOODYEAR WRANGLER AT/S) AT A KAUFMAN TIRE STORE. I DROVE FROM THE FORD DEALERSHIP THAT SAME DAY (ON THE ORIGINAL TIRES) TO HAVE THE NEW ONES PUT ON. AS THEY WERE SWITCHING THE TIRES, THE KAUFMAN REP CAME TO THE WAITING AREA TO TELL ME - "YOU REALLY DODGED A BULLET". APPARENTLY, NOT ONLY WERE THE STEEL THREADS SHOWING, THEY WERE SHOWING BECAUSE THE TREAD WAS SEPARATING. THEY DID NOT MENTION THIS TO ME AT THE FORD DEALERSHIP. I HAVE KEPT THE TIRES, AND THE ONE LOOKS AS IF SOMEONE TOOK A RAZOR BLADE TO THE EDGE - ALL THE WAY AROUND. AS THIS WAS ON THE INSIDE EDGE, I COULD NOT SEE IT. I HAVE MY TIRES ROTATED REGULARLY - THE LAST TIME ABOUT A MONTH AND A HALF AGO, SO EITHER THIS IS A RECENT SPLIT, OR THE SERVICER DID NOT NOTICE (OR NOTICED AND FAILED TO MENTION IT TO ME). FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT TIRES EXPERIENCED IRREGULAR TREAD WEAR, TIRES WERE NOISY AND ROUGH, SIDEWALLS ARE IRREGULAR, AND TIRES GRAB UNEVEN IN SLOW TURNS.
PE00-020, ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT FORD EXPLORER 1996 TIRE SIZE P25570R16109S WITH 55,000 MILES.CONSUMER TOOK VEHICLE TO MERCHANT TIRES TO HAVE BRAKES LOOKED AT WHEN MANAGER OF STORE STATED THAT REAR LEFT TIRE STEEL BELT ON THE SIDE OF TIRE WAS VISIBLE AND CRACKING AROUND THE CROSS SITES. NOISE, VIBRATION AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, UNEVEN TREAD WEAR, AND EVENTUALLY THUMPING FROM TREAD SEPARARTION, ALTHOUGH NO PEEL BEFORE THEY WERE REPLACED IN JUNE 1999.( DOT NUMBER: VN TIRE SIZE: P235/75R15 )
PE-00-020; ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT ON A FORD, EXPLORER, 1997, TIRE SIZE P235/75R15, DOT NUMBER BEGAN WITH VN ON ALL FOUR TIRES. TIRES HAVE 37 THOUSAND MILES ON THEM. CONSUMER NOTICED HAIRLINE CRACKS DEVELOPING RIGHT AT THE TREAD LINE ON ALL FOUR TIRES. FOUR TIRES HAVE BEEN REPLACED WITH ANOTHER BRAND AT CUSTOMER EXPENSE. *AK THE CUSTOMER STATES THAT THE TIRES FAILED DUE TO FAULTY DESIGN LAND SHOULD BE RECALLED. *YH

TIRE THERE WAS A LINE GOING AROUNG THE TIRE ,UNDERNEATH TREAD NEAR SIDEWALL. *AK THE CUSTOMER STATES THAT FIRESTONE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO REPLACE THE FAILED TIRE BECAUSE THERE WERE NO TIRES IN THE STORE ACCORDING THE DEALER. *YH
I AM HOPEFUL THAT THE NHTSA WILL EXAMINE AND PLACE A WARNING ON THESE TIRES, BECAUSE I FEEL THE ARE UNSAFE. I HAD AN INCIDENT WHERE ONE OF THE TIRES BLEW OUT FROM THE SIDE AT A MODERATE SPEED (35-45MPH) FOR NO REASON. THE SERVICE TECH AT THE TIRE DEALER THAT I WENT TO EXAMINDED THE TIRE, AND COULD FIND NO PUNCTURES OR LEAKS. THE OTHER 3 TIRES WERE ALL AT THE PROPER AIR PRESSURE, SO HE TOLD ME THAT HE COULDN'T SEE ANY REASON WHY THIS TIRE BLEW OUT, AND THAT IT WAS JUST A BAD TIRE. THIS ALL HAPPENED WAY BEFORE ANY PUBLIC CLAIMS REGARDING PROBLEMS WITH FIRESTONE TIRES WERE MADE, SO HE WASN'T BEING PREJUDICED. I FEEL VERY UNSAFE DUE TO THE FACT THAT I AM STILL DRIVING ON 3 OF THESE TIRES. THE 235-SIZED TIRES MADE FROM THE SAME PLANT WERE INCLUDED IN YOUR WARNING, SO I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THE 255'S COULD BE ANY SAFER, SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY ARE 2 CM WIDER. DO THOSE 2 CM MEAN THAT THE TIRE WAS MADE PROPERLY? I DOUBT IT. WELL I WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR ALL THE WORK YOU HAVE ALREADY DONE IN THIS MATTER, AND I HOPE YOU WILL CONTINUE TO BRING MATTERS LIKE THESE TO THE PUBLICS ATTENTION. THESE TIRES, ALTHOUGH NOT RECALLED, SHOW A CIRCUMFERENTIAL CRACK AT THE LATERAL EDGE OF THE TREAD LINE. NO ACCIDENT INVOLVED AND I REPLACED THE TIRES VOLUNTARILY WITH ANOTHER BRAND. THESE TIRES NEED TO BE INVESTIGATED AND POSSIBLY RECALLED - THEY SHOW THE SAME PREMATURE WEAR PATTERN AS THE RECALLED TIRES THAT WERE PRESENTED ON DATELINE NBC. IMPROPER CAMBER ADJUSTMENT COMPONENT PART OF ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT DOES NOT ALLOW WHEEL ALIGNMENT. THIS CAUSES EXCESSIVE TIRE WEAR ON THE INSIDE CORNER OF THE TIRE AND POOR HANDLING OF THE AUTO. CAR PULLS TO THE RIGHT.

WHILE DRIVING THE TIRES FAILED TO PERFORM AND MADE THE CAR SLIP INTO DITCH. I HAD TO GET IT PULLED OUT AND I HAD IT LOOKED AT THE FORD DEALER. THE DEALER AND FIRESTONE RECOMMENDED TO ME THAT THEY WOULD REPLACE THE TIRES FREE OF CHARGE SO THE CAR WILL NOT DO IT AGAIN. IT IS NOW SEPTEMBER 22, 2000 AND I HAVE NOT HEARD THEM GIVING THE TIRES AS THE SAID THEY WOULD. I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM BRIDGESTONE/FIRESTONE RECALLING MY WILDERNESS AT TIRES. FOR THE LAST 3 MONTHS I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS MAINTAINING AIR PRESSURE IN MY WILDERNESS AT TIRES. AT LEAST TWICE A WEEK 2 OUT OF THE 4 TIRES LOSES 10 POUNDS OF AIR PRESSURE. TIRES HAVE BEEN LOOKED AT BY AN AUTHORIZED FORD DEALERSHIP AND I HAVE BEEN TOLD THEY ARE FINE- NO LEAKS OR PUNCTURES - YET I AM CONSISTENTLY HAVE A PROBLEM MAINTAINING PROPER INFLATION OF THE TIRES. PURCHESED SUV IN MAY 1999 TIRES WERE FINE SUV WAS IN TEXAS FORM JUNE2000 TO MID AUG 2000 LEAVING TEX. SAME TIME AS RECALL CHECKED TIRES AND FOUND CRACKING ON ALL FOUR TIRES COVE FORD IN FORT HOOD TX SAID THEY WOULD NOT HELP WENT TO GENTELLINI WAS TOLD THEY WERE DRY ROT. THESE TIRES ARE ONLY 3 YEARS OLD WAS NOT DRIVEN OFF ROAD AND ALL FOUR ARE DAMAGED. ALSO I HAVE COME TO FIND OUT THAT I ONLY HAVE A 15 INCH TEMP SPARE TIRE HOW CAN I USE THAT WITH MY OTHER TIRES BEING 16 INCH?
