PE00-020; CONSUMER WAS TRAVELING ABOUT 74MPH ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN LEFT REAR FIRESTONE WILDERNESS TIRE ON DRIVER'S SIDE HAD SEPARATED, LOST CONTROL AND ROLLED ONCE. VEHICLE WAS TOTALED. THERE WERE TWO INJURIES. *AK
WHILE DRIVING ON I-35 GOING ABOUT 70 MPH THE TREAD ON THE LEFT REAR TIRE OF OUR EXPLORER SEPARATED. THIS CAUSED THE EXPLORER GO TO INTO A 540 DEGREE SPIN. WHILE SPINNING THE EXPLORER STUCK A CAR IN THE ADJACENT LANE TWICE, ONCE WITH THE FRONT AND ONCE WITH THE BACK OF THE EXPLORER. VEHICLE EXPERIENCED POOR DIRECTIONAL CONTROL AFTER VEHICLE HIT A BUMP OR POTHOLE IN ROAD WHILE TRAVELING AT SPEEDS IN EXCESS OF 35 MPH. DEALERSHIP INFORMED CONSUMER THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH VEHICLE. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION/ATTACHMENTS. *AK

I WAS DRIVING TO WORK IN THE MORNING AT ABOUT 75 MILES PER HOUR, WHEN I HEARD A LOUD NOISE AND MY EXPLORER BECAME VERY HARD TO HANDLE ON THE ROAD. I WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD SAFELY. I WENT TO INSPECT THE DAMAGE AND FOUND THAT THE TREAD OF MY RIGHT FRONT TIRE HAD COMPLETELY PEELED OFF. THIS CREATED DAMAGE TO THE BODY OF MY VEHICLE. I T WAS A VERY FRIGHTENING ACCIDENT, BUT IN READING OTHER STORIES, I FEEL EXTREMELY FORTUNATE.OOC. *AK( DOT NUMBER: )

FIRST INCIDENT - FLAT/BLOWOUT ON INTERSTATE, REPLACED TIRE. 2ND INCIDENT ON RIGHT FRONT - 2 BUBBLES IN TIRE WALL FOUND. 1 WAS APPROX. 4" IN DIAMETER. THE OTHER LESS THAN 1". REPLACED THAT TIRE AS WELL. THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN A MAJOR BLOWOUT IF NOT FOUND. THIS TIRE WAS INSPECTED 2 DAYS EARLIER WITH NO INDICATION OF FAILURE.( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: P235/75R15 )
MY SISTER WAS KILLED WHEN HER FORD EXPLORER ROLLED OVER. SHE HAD A PREVIOUS TIRE FAILURE ABOUT 6 MONTHS BEFORE THE FATAL ACCIDENT.( DOT NUMBER: )
A BLOWOUT ACCURRED ON THE DRIVER'S FRONT TIRE AND A SEPARATION OF THE RIGHT REAR TIRE, FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT 25570R16, CAUSING LOSS OF CONTROL, EXPLORER ROLLED OVER, THE OWNER, A PASSENGER AT THE TIME WAS KILLED, MOTHER, DRIVER OF VEHICLE AND FATHER BOTH SERIOUSLY INJURED. ALL FOUR TIRES HAD A CONTINOUS CRACK IN THE SIDEWALL RUNNING AROUND THE TIRE APPROXIMATELY 1 INCH FROM THE OUTER EDGE OF THE TIRE. THE CRACK IN SOME PLACES WAS WIDE ENOUGH TO STICK A CAR KEY INTO. I CALLED FIRESTONE CUSTOMER SUPPORT AND WAS PROMPTLY INSTRUCTED TO GO TO A DEALER WHO UPON INSPECTION CHANGED OUT ALL 4 TIRES. FIRESTONE DID CHARGE ME $135 TOTAL FOR THE REPLACEMENT TIRES. MY CONCERN IS NOT ABOUT THE MONEY, BUT THAT THESE TIRES WERE NOT LISTED ON THE FIRESTONE RECALL LIST OR NHTSA SAFETY ADVISORY (9/1/00). I CURRENTLY HAVE FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT TIRES ON MY VEHICLE AND AM CONCERNED ABOUT THESE TIRES. THE DOT # OF THESE TIRES IS NOT ON THE FIRESTONE RECALL OR NHTSA SAFETY ADVISORY. PLEASE CONTACT ME FOR FURTHER INFORMATION OR IF YOU HAVE HAD OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT TIRES WITH DOT #'S OUTSIDE THE RECALL AND SAFETY ADVISORY TIRES. THE PASSENGER REAR TIRE SEPERATED AT 70MPH. THIS CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO CROSS OVER 2 LANES OF TRAFFIC. NO OTHER ACCIDENT OCCURED. MAJOR DAMAGE WAS DONE TO THE SIDE AND UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. I HAD BEEN DRIVING FOR ABOUT 12 HOURS ON A TRIP STARTING IN FLORIDA ON MY WAY TO MICHIGAN. IN KENTUCKY I RAN OVER A 2X4 PEICE OF WOOD ABOUT 6" LONG. THE FRONT TIRE WENT OVER OK, BUT THE REAR TIRE BLOW IMMEDIATELY. THERE WAS NO TREAD SEPARATION JUST A BIG HOLE TOWARD ONE SIDE OF THE TREAD (NOT IN THE SIDEWALL). PROCEEDING SLOWLY AT IDLE SPEED WITH FOOT ON BRAKE. AUTO SUDDENLY ACCELERATED SPONTANEOUSLY REQUIRING MUCH HARDER BRAKING TO STOP. HAPPENED TWO TIMES WITHIN 10 MINUTE SPAN. SIMILAR PROBLEM OCCURRED ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO AND WAS FIXED BY FORD DEALER. NO INJURIES OCCURRED. *JB
CHECK ENGINE LIGHT LIT ON 10/29/99 TOOK TO UNIVERSITY FORD, DURHAM 10/30/99 - REPLACED AIR FLOW SENSOR $320.22. ON 11/4/99 CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN - TOOK BACK TO UNIVERSITY FORD - STATED THAT IT WAS THE FUEL INJECTOR INTAKE GASKETS & O-RINGS $179.23. VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THE SERVICE OF THIS VEHICLE NO OLDER THAT IT IS. WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT. THERE WAS A LADY IN THE LOBBY WHO ALSO HAD A 1998 FORD TAURUS THAT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAD CAME ON. I THINK THIS IS SOMETHING THAT FORD SHOULD LOOK INTO - COULD THIS POSSIBLY BE A RECALL PROBLEM - IF SO I HAVE COPIES OF ALL BILLS WHICH I CAN SUBMIT AS PROOF WORK WAS DONE. I CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY FORD IS HAVING SO MANY PROBLEMS - THIS IS THE 3RD FORD THAT I'VE OWNED & THEY WAY THINGS ARE LOOKING WILL BE MY LAST. WHAT HAPPENED TO "QUALITY IS JOB ONE" NOT WITH THIS VEHICLE - I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT FORD WOULD PUT OUT A PRODUCT THAT COULD GIVE ALL OF THESE PROBLEMS SO SOON WITH NO MORE MILES ON THIS VEHICLE. I'M A VERY, VERY DISAPPOINTED CUSTOMER. IF FORD CAN'T DO ANY BETTER THAT THIS - THEY NEED TO CLOSE THEIR DOORS. IT'S VERY HARD TO MAKE MONTHLY PAYMENTS WHEN I'M HAVING TO SPEND OUT $500.00 ON SOMETHING THAT SHOULD NOT BE GIVING PROBLEMS THIS SOON. I'VE HAD VEHICLES WITH CLOSE TO 100,000 MILES & HAVE NEVER HAD TO REPLACE THESE THINGS & THEY WERE FORD PRODUCTS. MY CLIENT SUFFERED 3RD AND 4TH DEGREE BURNS OF RIGHT FOREFOOT AND TOES FROM EXTREME HEAT EMITTED BY VEHICLE'S MANUALLY CONTROLLED HEATER. THE HEATER VENT IS JUST INCHES ABOVE THE GAS PEDAL, DIRECTED AT DRIVER'S FOOT. BURN VICTIM REQUIRED SKIN GRAFTS, THEN 3 TOES AMPUTATED. OVER $400,000 IN MEDICAL BILLS AND TREATMENT. HEATER TESTED AT 180 DEGREES OVER THE GAS PEDAL. CLIENT'S FEET WERE NUMB DUE TO DIABETES, AND DIDN'T FEEL EXTREME HEAT WHILE DRIVING CAR ON HIGHWAY FOR 25 MILES OVER, 1/2 HOUR WITH HEATER ON. FORD SAYS "NO DEFECT" - OTHER EXPLORERS WITH SAME TEMP READINGS. *AK
MECHANIC FOUND DEFECT ON ONE OF THE CONSUMER'S FIRESTONE TIRES (P235/75R15), 3 MONTHS LATER A TIRE EXPERIENCED TREAD SEPARATION SO CONSUMER DECIDED TO REPLACE ALL TIRES WITH ANOTHER BRAND, CONSUMER RECEIVED RECALL NOTICE AND SENT FORMS TO FIRESTONE, HOWEVER FIRESTONE REJECTED REIMBURSEMENT DUE TO THE TIRES BEING PURCHASED FROM A COMPETITIVE RETAILER PRIOR TO AUGUST 9,2000. *SLC

DURING AUGUST, 2000, I CONTACED NHTSA RELATIVE TO THE TIRE FAILURE ON MY EXPLORE; HOWEVER, THE AGENT I TALKED WITH ON THE TELEPHONE DID NOT TAKE ANY INFORMATION OR SUGGEST ANY ACTION TO BE TAKEN. I WAS INFORMED AT THAT TIME THAT A RECALL WAS IMMIENT. THEREFORE, I MAILED THE NECESSARY DOCUMENTS TO FIRESTONE AND FORD MOTOR COMPANY ON OR ABOUT AUGUST 23, 2000. SINCE THAT TIME I HAVE HAD VERY LITTLE CORRESPONDENCE WITH EITHER COMPANY. THE ONLY THING FIRESTONE HAS SAID IS THAT MY ACCIDENT OCCURED IN OCTOBER 1999, WHICH WAS PRIOR TO THE JANUARY 1, 2000 RECALL DATE. PLEASE ADVISE AS TO HOW TIRES DETERMINED TO BE DEFECTIVE AS OF JANUARY 2000 WERE NOT IN FACT DEFECTIVE AND SUBJECT TO THE SAME RECALL AS THOSE ON MY EXPLORER. THE TIRE ON THE LEFT REAR BLEW OUT ON I-59 BETWEEN BIRMINGHAM AND TUSCALOOSA ON OR ABOUT OCTOBER 14, 1999. THE NEXT DAY I REPLACED ALL TIRES WITH A NEW SET. VEHICLE HESITATES ON RE-ACCELERATION AFTER DECELERATING FROM 50-65 MPH TO A SLOW ROLL. THIS HAS HAPPENED MANY TIMES SINCE THE CAR WAS FIRST PURCHASED. DEALER CLAIMS THERE IS NOTHING WRONG. I JUST LOCATED A SERVICE BULLETIN #12624 THAT ADDRESSES THIS PROBLEM.
ENGINE STALLS AND SOMETIMES DIES WHILE ACCELERATING FROM A STOP. PROBLEM MOST OFTEN OCCURS AFTER LONG DRIVES, ON HOT DAYS, WHEN TURNING TO THE LEFT FROM A FULL OR PARTIAL STOP.
ON SEPTEMBER 17,1999 AT APPROXIMATELY 45 MILES PER HOUR, I SWERVED TO AVOID HITTING AN ON COMING VEHICLE. UPON APPLYING THE BRAKES, THE FRONT AND REAR DRIVERSIDE TIRES BLEWOUT CAUSING MY VEHICLE TO "ROLLOVER" SEVERAL TIMES. AT "NO TIME" DID THE AIRBAGS DEPLOY. UPON ARRIVAL OF THE POLICE, I WAS TRANSPORTED TO A LOCAL HOSPITAL WITH "SEVERE" HEAD INJURIES. MY TRUCK WAS COMPLETELY TOTALED.
