I WAS SLOWING DOWN TO MAKE A LEFT HAND TURN AT A BUSY INTERSECTION AND MY EXPLORER JUST DIED. AS I WAS LOSING CONTROL OF MY STEERING, I COASTED TO A STOP AT THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. ONLY BECAUSE OF MY 30 YEARS OF DRIVING EXPERIENCE AND CALM DEMEANOR WAS I ABLE TO AVOID A TERRIBLE CRASH. IF MY 16 YEAR OLD HAD BEEN DRIVING, IT IS FRIGHTENING TO THINK ABOUT WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED.
I AM NOT IN POCESSION OF THIS VEHICLE ANY LONGER...BUT I DID TRADE IT ON A FORD EXPEDITION WITH FIRESTONE WILDERNESS TIRES. THEY ARE IDENTICAL IN SHAPE FORM AND FUNCTION!!!! FURTHERMORE I DID HAVE A TIRE FAILURE WITH THE FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT TYPE TIRES ON MY 1998 FORD EXPLORER. I RAN OVER A TRACTOR TRAILER MUD FLAP LAYING VERY FLAT IN THE ROAD, AND MY RIGHT REAR FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT TIRE BLEW OUT FOR NO APPARENT REASON.( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: 235/75/15 )
FIRESTONE WILDERNESS 235/75/15 TIRE FAILURE. INSURED ADVISED TIRE BLEW. IT IS UNCERTAIN IF TREAD SEPARATED. 10% WEAR ON TIRES AT TIME OF LOSS. INSURED WAS PULLING A BOAT AND WAS PULLING FROM TOLL BOOTH WHEN RIGHT REAR TIRE. THERE WERE INJURIES, BUT HEALTH INSURANCE TOOK CARE OF PAYMENT. INJURY CLAIM NEVER PURSED. NO SALVAGE, NO TIRE. I WAS TREAVELING ON I-10 IN BATON ROUGE, LA AT ABOUT 65 MILES PER HOUR WHEN MY TIRE BLEW OUT. THE TREAD WAS BLOWN FROM THE TIRE. THERE WAS NO WARNING OR EXCESIVE WEAR TO THIS OR ANY OTHER TIRE. THE TREAD OF THE FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT TIRE SEPARATED, THE CONSUMER PURCHASED A NEW TIRE BUT THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO THE NEW TIRE, THE CONSUMER INQUIRED ABOUT RECALL AND WAS TOLD THAT THE 16 " TIRES WERE NOT INCLUDED. NLM
WHEN GETTING INTO VEHICLE AND STARTING IT UP, THROTTLE STICKS. CONSUMER HAS TO PRESS THE GAS PEDAL REAL HARD TO STOP THE THROTTLE FROM STICKING. ALSO, PASSENGER'S SIDE SEAT BELT WON'T COME OUT, AND FRONT PASSENGER'S SEAT KEEPS SLIDING FORWARD WHENEVER CONSUMER IS DRIVING. *AK

VEHICLE A LEMON IN SHOP FOR 9 MONTHS, TURNING STEERING WHEEL WOULD NOT TURN TIRES, STEERING KNUCKLE BROKE CASTING AT WHEEL. *AK
VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A ROLL OVER AT 25 MPH. UPON IMPACT, THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY, RESULTING IN INJURIES. MANUFACTURER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED. *AK
INFLATION PRESSURES CONSISTENTLY MAINTAINED AT 3000 MILE INTERVALS. TREAD SEPARATION FROM WILDERNESS AT TIRES CAUSED BLOWOUTS IN FOUR INCIDENTS. TWO INCIDENTS IN 1999 AND TWO INCIDENTS IN 2000. ALL INCIDENTS OCCURRED AT 40-60 MPH OR SHORTLY AFTER DECELERATING FROM SUCH SPEEDS. REPLACEMENT TIRES PURCHASED FROM FIRESTONE DEALER. DEFECTIVE TIRES REPLACED/DISCARDED BY DEALER SO ACTUAL ID INFO AND "EVIDENCE" IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE FOR DEFECTIVE TIRES. DEALERS AND MANUFACTURER CANNOT KNOW SITE OF MANUFACTURE SINCE DEFECTIVE TIRES HAVE BEEN DISCARDED. RECEIVED RECALL 99V062001 & CONTACTED DEALER. TOOK VEHICLE IN FOR SPEED CONTROL REPAIRS & HAD IT DONE. PICKED VEHICLE UP & NOTICED CRUISE CONTROL FAILED TO WORK LIKE IT SHOULD. CONTACTED DEALER & WAS REFUSED TO CORRECT PROBLEM. *AK
PART HAS BEEN REPLACED AND BROKE AGAIN AFTER A FEW USES. I HAVE ASKED IF STRONGER MATERIAL WAS CONSIDERED. A FEW OF MY FRIENDS THAT ALSO OWN THIS PARTICULAR MODEL HAVE ALSO HAD FAILURES WITH THIS COMPONENT. NO SAFETY DEFECT LISTED FOR ABOVE VEHICLE. *AK
R/F/TIE ROD BROKE OFF SPINDLE CAUSING LOSS OF STEERING AND PLOWING INTO 2 PARKED CARS
DRIVING ON I-75 IN BROWARD COUNTY, DAY, LIGHT RAIN, ROAD HAD A SHEEN BUT NO LARGE STANDING PUDDLES. SECTION OF HIGHWAY WE TRAVEL DAILY. VEHICLE ABRUPTLY HYDROPLANED AND COCKED 30-40 DEGREES TO THE RIGHT. I WAS LOOKING DOWN THE LANE OF TRAVEL OUT THE LEFT WINDOW. I WAS ABLE TO RECOVER CONTROL. HAD TIRE AND SUSPENSION CHECKED. TIRES HAD 50% TREAD REMAINING. REPLACED WITH MICHELIN NO FURTHER HYDROPLANING EPISODES. THE LOSS OF DIRECTIONAL CONTROL WAS EXTREMELY ABRUPT AND STOPPED AT 30-40 DEGREES BEFORE I COULD REACT TO COUNTERSTEER. I HAVE A TYPE RATING IN AIRBUS 300, 14 YEAR NAVY PILOT, 10 YEARS AS NAVY FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR AND HAVE DRIVEN IN ABSYMAL FLORIDA WX ALL MY LIFE. I BOUGHT MY TRUCK IN SEPT 1998. IN AUG 1999 I TOOK IT INTO THE DEALER BECAUSE THE DRIVERS MIRROR VIBRATES AT SPEEDS OF 55MPH AND UP. ALSO THE STEERING WHEEL VIBRATES AND THE LEFT FRONT TIRE FEELS LIKE IT IS GOING TO COME OFF AT ABOUT 65 MPH. I HAVE EVERYTHING DOCUMENTED AND HAVE BEEN IN NOW 7 TIMES. THE FIRST TIME THEY CHANGED THE MIRROR, THE 2ND THE BALANCED/ROTATED THE TIRES, THE 3 TIME THEY HAD ME BUY NEW TIRES, THE 4TH THE PUT ANOTHER SET OF NEW TIRES ON, THE 5TH I HAD THE SERVICE MGR AND HEAD MECHANIC DRIVE IT AGAIN THE TIRES WERE BALANCED/ROTATED, THE 6TH TIME THE REGIONAL SERVICE MANAGER DROVE IT. THEN A FACTORY REP FROM FORD MOTOR COMPANY CAME DOWN FROM DETROIT AND CALLED ME ON THE PHONE. WITH EACH TIME I HAD IT IN I WAS TOLD IT IS "NORMAL" FOR A MIRROR TO VIBRATE BUT EACH OF THEM SAID THEY DIDN'T FEEL THE VIRBRATION IN THE FRONT END OR STEERING COLUMN. I WROTE A LETTER TO THE OWNER OF THE DEALERSHIP ALONG WITH A C/C TO THE PRESIDENT/CEO OF FORD MOTOR CO. I STATED THE GA LEMON LAW/NEW CAR WARRENTY ACT OF 1990 AND PER THE LEMON LAW GIVING THEM 1 MORE OPPORTUNITY TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THE SERVICE MANAGER CALLED ME ON 11/4/99 AND I TOOK IT IN THE AM OF 11/5/99 FOR THE 7TH TIME. HE LOOKED THE SUSPENSION OVER AND SAID HE COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. I HAVE COPIES OF EVERYTHING I MAILED OUT AND ALL THE TIMES I HAVE BEEN IN. THE VEHICLE HAS GOTTEN WORSE, IT IS HARD TO SEE ANYTHING OUT OF THE DRIVERS MIRROR AT 50 MPH AND I CAN NOT SEE ANYTHING AT 70 MPH. THE LEFT FRONT TIRE FEELS LIKE IT IS GOING TO COME OFF WHEN I REACH ABOUT 65 MPH, AND IT ALSO IS HARD TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE. THE STEERING WHEEL HAS A VIBRATION IN IT AND THE FRONT SEATS NOW HAVE A VIBRATION. I FEEL VERY UNSAFE IN THIS VEHICLE. I ASK ON 11/5/99 ABOUT A REPLACEMENT AND THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID THE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY WOULD NOT DO THAT. I WOULD HAVE TO GO PERSUE THE LEMON LAW. I DON'T WANT MY CHILDREN OR ANYONE ELSE TO GET HURT. PLEASE HELP!!
WINDSHIELD HAD CRACKED WHILE VEHICLE WAS PARKED. NO SIGN OF PROBLEM BEFORE OR OF BEING HIT BY STONES/ROCKS. CRACK STARTED AT TOP, NEAR ROOF, & SPREAD DOWNWARD IN MIDDLE. *AK
I NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM ENGINE COMPARTMENT AFTER STOPPING TO FUEL UP AFTER DRIVING SEVERAL HOURS AT A SPEED OF 65 MPH. TOOK VEHICLE INTO DEALER AND TOLD THEM THAT THE ENGINE WAS LEAKING OIL AND HAD TO PUT IN THREE QUARTS TO FINISH 400 MILE TRIP. SERVICE DEPT. ADVISOR SAID PROBLEM WAS DO TO GALLEY PLUG LEAKING. THEY REPLACED PLUG AND ENGINE STILL LEAKS. VEHICLE IS STILL IN SHOP AFTER 5 DAYS. THEY RECOMMENDED REPLACING HEAD.

WHEN DRVING AT ANY SPEED AND APPLYING THE BRAKES, THERE IS VIBRATION WITHIN THE BRAKES AND ENTIRE VEHICLE. *AK
VEHICLE WON'T DISENGAUGE AND ACCELERATED UP TO 75 MPH. PUSHED THE CRUISE CONTROL BUTTON, AND VEHICLE KEPT ACCELERATING. APPLIED THE BRAKES, AND VEHICLE WENT UP TO 80 MPH. *AK
I HAVE HAD VEHICLE FOR A LITTLE OVER A YEAR. THE TIRES WERE ORIGINAL TO THE VEHICLE. I HAVE HAD TWO FLATS, ONE OF WHICH WAS A COMPLETE TIRE FAILURE. THE TIRE CRACKED ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE SIDEWALL. LUCKILY THE SUV WAS BEING STOPPED WHEN IT HAPPENED. I NOW HAVE A THIRD OF THE ORIGINAL FOUR THAT HAS A SMALL SPOT WHERE THE STEEL BELT IS SHOWING THROUGH. I HAVE REPLACED ALL FOUR TIRES WITH GOODYEAR IN LIGHT OF THE HISTORY OF THE TIRES AND THE RECENT INFORMATION THAT HAS BEEN PRESENTED CONCERNING THESE TIRES. I DEFINITELY FEEL OTHER SIZES SHOULD BE RECALLED. THESE TIRES ARE A MENACE. PE00 020; CONSUMER WAS TRAVELING ABOUT 50MPH ON HIGHWAY AND HEARD A NOISE. HE WAS ABLE TO PULL TO THE SHOULDERS. RIGHT REAR TIRE TREAD SEPARATED, AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES. BRIDGESTONE/FIRESTONE WILDERNESS,#ATX P23575R15, DOT VNHL. *AK
VEHICLE JUMPED OUT OF GEAR, CAUSING PROPERY DAMAGE TO THE INSIDE WALL OF OWNER'S GARAGE WHICH COULD HAVE RESULTED IN INJURY. *YC
RIMS ARE NOT ROUND THEY ARE OVAL SHAPED. ALSO, PREMATURE WEAR OF TIRES, CAUSING EXTREMELY BAD VIBRATION.CONSUMER HAS CONTACTED DEALER. *AK
4X4 AUTOMATICALLY ENGAGING WHEN UNDER HEAVY LOAD ON DRY PAVEMENT AND WHEELS ARE NOT SLIPPING, 4X4 SELECTOR IS IN THE AUTO POSITION AND NO ERROR CODES ARE DISPLAYED OR FOUND. CAUSES PULSATION IN THE DRIVE TRAIN AND GROANING NOISES IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, NOISE AND PULSTATION GOES AWAY WHEN ENGINE LOAD IS DECREASED AND OR 4X4 IS SWITCHED TO 4X4 HIGH. DEALER HAS REPLACED THE 4X4 COMPUTER AND CHECKED THE AXLES AND DIFFERENTIAL, PROBLEM STILL EXITS. DEALER HAS STATED THEY CANNOT FIX THE PROBLEM AND THEY WILL TRY AND GET A TECHNICIAN FROM FORD THREE WEEKS AGO.
AT VERY LOW SPEEDS, OR AFTER RELEASING THE FOOT BRAKE, AND THEN ACCELERATING BRISKLY, THE ENTIRE DRIVE TRAIN GOES INTO NEUTRAL. THE ENGINE SPEEDS UP, BUT NO VEHICLE MOVEMENT. YOU MUST STOP, OR COAST UNTIL THE DRIVE LINE VIOLENTLY "CLUNKS" BACK INTO GEAR. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES, TWICE NEARLY CAUSING ACCIDENTS. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS, AND I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF OTHER SIMILAR VEHICLES HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. IT HAS JUST BEEN REPORTED TO THE MANUFACTURER, SO THEY HAVE NOT HAD TIME TO RESPOND.
THESE DEFECTS HAPPENS JUST MONTHS AFTER WARRANTY WAS OUT LIVE FAR FROM DEALERSHIP BUT I TRIED TO GET IT THERE AS SOON AS I COULD BEING THAT IT WAS MY ONLY SOURCE OF TRANSPORTATION. I FELT THAT CAPITAL FORD SHOULD OF STILL HONORED THESE DEFECTS AND TRY TO AT LEAST OFFER TO HELP ME IN ANYWAY THEY COULD I FEEL THAT THEY DIDN"T CARE ABOUT IT ALL THEY HAD TO SAY TO ME THAT THE WARRANTY IS OUT AND IT'S GOING TO COST A LOT TO HAVE THESE DEFECTS FIX THEY WOULDN'T EVEN GIVE A PRICE ALL THEY SAID IS IT'S GOING TO BE A COUPLE OF HUNDRED OF DOLLARS. I WAS VERY DISSAPOINTED IN THEIR SERVICE AND THE WAY THEY HANDLED THIS SITUATION. IF SOMETHING ISN'T DONE, THEN I PLAN TO RETURN MY SUV AT THE END OF IT'S LEASE AND GO ELSEWHERE TO BUY MY NEXT USV. I HOPE THAT YOU CAN RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM I PURCHASE SEVERAL FORD IN THE PAST YEARS AND HAVE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH THEM SO I HOPE YOU WILL HONOR THESE DEFECTS . RECALL REPAIR UNABLE TO BE COMPLETED DUE TO LACK OF PARTS (99V-062), VEHICLE IS EXPERIENCING THROTTLE STICKING/FAILURE AT THIS TIME.MJS
VEHICLE WOULD LOCK INTO AND OUT OF 4-WHEEL DRIVE RAPIDLY ON DRY, SMOOTH PAVEMENT FOR NO REASON ,CAUSING VEHICLE TO LURCH AND LAG ( JERKING ) AND CAUSING FRONT LEFT WHEEL HOP AND VIBRATION. DEALERSHIP HAS REMOVED THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE CAPABILTY OF THIS VEHICLE TO RESLOVE THE PROBLEM INSTEAD OF REPAIRING. THE ORIGINALLY EQUIPPED 4 WHEEL DRIVE EXPLORER IS NOW ONLY 2 WHEEL DRIVE. INDICATOR LIGHTS ON DASH NOW CONTINUOUSLY FLASH PROVIDING SOMEWHAT OF A DRIVERS DISTRACTION. ALSO VEHICLE HAS A LOUD SQUEAL IN FRONT END AT SPEEDS FROM 1 THRU 40 MPH WHICH ONE FAILED REPAIR ATTEMPT HAS BEEN MADE. ALSO VEHICLE ENGINE HAS LOUD MECHANICAL ENGINE NOISE ( KNOCKING AND BANGING ) IN UPPER ENGINE AREA. *AK
INTERMITTENTLY 4- WHEEL DRIVE LIGHT COMES ON . THE DEALER HAS DETERMINED THAT THE 4-WHEEL DRIVE HAS BURNED OUT. *AK
I WAS GOING DOWN CLINTON KEITH IN MURRIETA WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN MY TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT SHIFT PASSED 3RD. IT WAS WORKING FINE THE DAY BEFORE. SO I TOOK IT SLOW BACK HOME AND THE CLOSER I GOT HOME THE TRANSMISSON STARTED SLIPPING GEARS.
FUEL PUMP WIRING BECAME DISLODGED. *AK
VEHICLE WAS MAKING A SIREN NOISE. DEALER REPLACED IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE UNDER WARRANTY. ON 03-AUG-2000 CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK BECAUSE THE PROBLEM REOCCURRED. DEALER STATED IN WRITING THAT IT WAS SOMETHING NORMAL.*AK

WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED UNDER NORMAL BRAKING CONDITIONS VEHICLE ACCELERATES SUDDENLY. THE MANUFACTURER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED. *AK
VEHICLE IS NOT ABLE TO BE PROPERLY ALIGNED DUE TO THE DESIGN OF THE CAMBER UNIT, CONSUMER HAS TO PURCHASE A CAMBER KIT IN ORDER FOR THE VEHICLE TO NOT PULL TO THE RIGHT (ALIGNMENT FAILURE). MJS
STEEL BELT POPPED THROUGH THE TREADS CAUSING THE TIRE TO RAPIDLY DEFLATE AFTER STOPPING THE VEHICLE. ACCORDING TO THE FIRESTONE DEALER THE OTHER ORIGINAL TIRES HAVE AT LEAST 10-15 THOUSAND MILES LEFT ON THE TREDS.( DOT NUMBER: W2HL TIRE SIZE: P235/75R15 )
