MY WIFE HAD TIRE SEPARATION ABOUT 4-5 MONTHS AFTER WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. EVEN THOUGH THIS TIRE IS NOT CURRENTLY UNDER RECALL, I HAVE BEEN TO FIRESTONE AND FORD NOW AND RECEIVED THE RUNAROUND. I WANT TO MAKE CERTAIN THESE TIRES ARE SAFE. ALSO, I THINK WE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEMS OTHERS HAVE HAD. IT MAKES NO SENSE WHY THE TIRED SEPARATED. IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE STICKS SHUT, SHUTTING DOWN ENGINE WHENEVER YOU LIFT OFF THE GAS PEDAL. I DROVE THE CAR HOME BEING CAREFUL NOT TO LIFT MY FOOT COMPLETELY OFF THE GAS. SOMEONE COULD EASILY LIFT OFF THE GAS IN AN INTERSECTION FOR EXAMPLE, AND HAVE THE CAR STALL IMMEDIATELY. IT IS MY OPINION THAT A PART FAILING THAT CAUSES THE CAR TO STALL LIKE THAT IS A SAFETY PROBLEM. THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT THE IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE WAS OFTEN ON BACK ORDER. WHILE DRIVING THE REAR LEFT FIRESTONE WILDERNESS TIRE (P225/70R16) SEPARATED AND BLEWOUT. NLM
DRIVE TRAIN-HIGH PITCHED SQUEAL/WHISTLE NOISE FROM FRONT END AT SPEEDS 20MPH TO 55MPH. FOUR ATTEMPS BY THE FORD AGENCY HAVE BEEN MADE BUT THE NOISE STILL REMAINS.THERE HAVE BEEN A TOTAL OF 14 REPORTS MADE TO NHTSA FOR 1998 & 1999 FOR THE SAME PROBLEM AS I INTERPRET SOME OF THE WEB SITE REPORTS. WHILE DRIVING ON A HOT DAY HEARD A NOISE COMING FROM RIGHT REAR TIRE, LIKE A POP WHEN ANOTHER PERSON SAW PIECES OF TIRE FLYING OUT, THEN CONSUMER LOST CONTROL. *AK CONSUMER STATES THAT THE FIRESTONE TIRE DISINTEGRATED, NO OTHER SPECIFIC TIRE INFORMATION GIVEN. *SLC
THE FRONT WINDSHIELD CRACKED FROM THE ROOF SECTION DOWN WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY. THE ONLY OBJECT THAT CAME INTO CONTACT WITH THE WINDSHIELD WAS WATER FROM A GARDEN HOSE WHILE WASHING THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND SHOWN THE DAMAGE BUT RESPONDED "THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN DO" IT MUST BE DEFECTIVE GLASS.
I HAVE BEEN AN OWNER OF THE FORD EXPLORER SPORT FOR APPROXIMATELY 13 MONTHS WITH THE ORIGINAL FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT TIRES. ON 19 JUN 00, I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK WHICH IS APPROXIMATELY 55 MILES AND DRIVING 55 MPH WHEN I HEARD A POP AND REALIZED THAT MY RIGHT REAR TIRE HAD BLOWN OUT. FORTUNATELY I WAS ABLE TO MANAGE THE VEHICLE OUT OF TRAFFIC AND ON THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. WHEN I PULLED OVER, IT WAS APPARENT THAT I DID IN FACT HAVE A BLOW OUT AND NOT JUST MERELY HAD RUN OVER SOMETHING. THE PORTION OF THE TIRE THAT WAS DAMAGED WAS THE SIDEWALLS HAS SEVERAL TEARS FROM THE RIM TO THE TREAD. I MANAGED TO GET THE TIRE CHANGED SAFELY AND IMMEDIATELY WENT TO THE SEARS AUTOMOTIVE DEPARTMENT IN MY HOME TOWN AND PURCHASED ANOTHER FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT TIRE AT $114.12 TO ENSURE THAT I HAD A SPARE IN CASE OF ANOTHER PROBLEM WITH THESE TIRES. I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE THESE TIRES REPLACED AS THE MANY THOUSANDS OF OTHER CONSUMERS, HOWEVER FIRESTONE WILL NOT BE THE TIRE OF CHOICE. SINCERELY, MS. JAMIE M. ON JUNE 17, 1999 MY WIFE, INFANT DAUGHTER AND I WERE RETURNING FROM VACATION IN OUR 1999 FORD EXPLORER ENTERING ATLANTA, GA TRAVELING WEST ON I-20 MERGING INTO THE I-85 / I-75 CONNECTOR WHEN THE RIGHT REAR TIRE BLEW OUT. THE VEHICLE WAS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO HANDLE. DUE TO HEAVY TRAFFIC CONDITIONS AND LOSS OF CONTROL I HAD TO BRING THE VEHICLE TO A HALT ON THE INSIDE HOV LANE. I DID NOT HIT ANY DEBRIS ON THE ROAD AND IT WAS CLEARLY VISIBLE THAT THE SIDE WALL OF THE TIRE HAD BLOWN OUT. THE TRAFFIC CONDITIONS WERE SO HAZARDOUS THAT IT TOOK AN ATLANTA, FULTON COUNTY POLICE OFFICER WITH SIREN, FLASHING LIGHTS AND HORN TO MOVE MY VEHICLE TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY TO GET US CLEAR OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A GOODYEAR DEALERSHIP AND THE MANAGER CONFIRMED THAT THE TIRE HAD BLOWN OUT FROM THE INSIDE. I TOOK THE TIRE TO THE FIRESTONE DEALER AND THE MANAGER INSISTED THAT WE HAD HIT SOMETHING IN THE ROAD. I MADE IT CLEAR THAT WE HAD NOT HIT ANYTHING IN THE ROAD AND THAT I WOULD TAKE THE MATTER UP WITH THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY AND MY ATTORNEY. WITH THAT STATEMENT THE MANAGER AGREED TO REPLACE THE TIRE FREE OF CHARGE. I BECAME SUSPICIOUS WITH THAT QUICK TURN AROUND AND CONTACTED FORD MOTOR COMPANY AND THEY DENIED ANY KNOWLEDGE OF ISSUES WITH FIRESTONE TIRES. I AM INCENSED THAT FIRESTONE AND FORD KNOWINGLY JEOPARDIZED MY FAMILY BY REPLACING THIS DEFECTIVE TIRE WITH ANOTHER FIRESTONE WILDERNESS TIRE. I HAVE AGAIN CONTACTED FORD MOTOR COMPANY AFTER THE RECENT PRESS RELEASE ABOUT FIRESTONE'S ISSUES WITH WILDERNESS TIRES ON FORD EXPLORERS AND ONCE AGAIN THEY TOLD ME THEY COULD DO NOTHING UNTIL THEY RECALLED THE TIRES. I'M NOT SURE WHICH WAY TO TURN ON THIS ISSUE AND I AM SEEKING YOUR ADVICE ON HOW TO GET THIS ISSUE ADDRESSED. I DO NOT WANT THESE TIRES ON MY EXPLORER. I WAS IN A CAR ACCIDENT ON JUNE 16, 2000, WITH A PASSANGER. WE SWERVED TO MISS A DEER ON A GRAVEL ROAD AND LOST CONTROL OF THE EXPLORER. I WAS UNAWARE OF ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE EXPLORER AT THE TIME, AND NOW SINCE THE TIRE RECALL, I BELEIVE THE TIRES MAY HAVE BLOWN WHEN I "FISHTAILED". THERE WAS A SIMILAR ACCIDENT TO MINE IN MINNEAPOLIS, 100 MIES SOUTH OF ME, OVER THE JULY 4TH WEEEKEND. I WOULD LIKE ANY INFORMATION I COULD. MY INSURANCE COMPANY HANDLED EVERYTHING WONDERFULY, BUT I WAS WONDERING IF I OR GEICO INS., COULD RECOVER ANY LOSSES OR DAMAGES FROM THE BRIDGESTONE, FORD, OR OTHER. I BROKE MY COLLARBONE IN THE ACCIDENT FROM MY SEATBELT, AND HAVE A VERY VISIBLE LUMP ON MY SHOULDER FROM IT. I ALSO HAVE PERMENANT SCARS ON MY HAND FROM GLASS THAT BROKE. I JUST HEARD ON THE RADIO OF A POTENTIAL PROBLEM. ABOUT SIX WEEKS AGO I HAD A BLOWOUT ON THE FREEWAY WHICH RESULTED IN A DAMAGED RIM AND A REPLACEMENT OF A TIRE. AT THE TIME I ASKED REPAIRMAN IF IT COULD BE A DEFECT AND HE WASN'T SURE. I ASKED HOW LONG THE TIRES SHOULD LAST, HE SAID 60K MILES. I ONLY HAVE 40K MILES, WITH STILL AN OKAY TREAD. SINCE ABOUT 10,000 MILES, THE OTHER 3 OE TIRES ON VEHICLE HAVE SHOWN "PEELING" RUBBER ON THE SIDEWALLS TO WHERE THE WHITE INNER BELTS ARE SHOWING THROUGH IN SMALL AREAS. I HAD THOUGHT THIS WAS NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR IN THE SOUTH (I RECENTLY MOVED HERE FROM MICHIGAN) UNTIL I STARTED HEARING AND READING IN THE LAST FEW DAYS ABOUT THE INHERENT PROBLEMS WITH THESE PARTICULAR TIRES. ON MAY 05, 2000, WHILE LOOKING OUT THE REAR VIEW MIRROR OF MY FORD MUSTANG, I WATCHED MY WIFE ROLL OUR 1999 FORD EXPLORER SPORT ON THE FREEWAY AT ABOUT 55 MILES PER HOUR. FORTUNATELY, I HAD SLOWED DOWN TO ABOUT 55 MPH BECAUSE I WAS IN A METROPOLITAN AREA AND THINKING OF GETTING GAS AND GOING THROUGH A TURN. WHILE DRIVING WEST ON ATLANTIC BLVD IN FRONT OF THE POST OFFICE THE LEFT FRONT TIRE BLEW OUT CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SPIN 2 TIMES (360'S) AND STRIKE THE MEDIAN BREAKING THE WHEEL AND FLATTENING THE LEFT REAR TIRE ALSO.
