TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD EXPLORER. WHILE IDLING AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, THE LEFT TURN SIGNAL BLINKED FOUR TIMES AND THEN BECAME STUCK IN THE ON POSITION. THE CONTACT NOTICED FUMES COMING FROM THE HAZARD LIGHT BUTTON. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE MULTI-FUNCTION SWITCH FAILED. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 87,475 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 87,455.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD EXPLORER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR BAG LIGHT REMAINED ILLUMINATED AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE AIR BAG WIRING FAILED AND THAT THE DEALER COULD REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT HAS NOT YET TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 17,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD EXPLORER. WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SMOKE. THE ENGINE TURNED COMPLETELY OFF AND THE VEHICLE BURST INTO FLAMES. THE FIRE STARTED UNDER THE HOOD. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE REPAIR SHOP. AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT HE WAS DRIVING TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED FOR NHTSA RECALL # 03V280000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL). THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 99,000.
ACCESSING FREEWAY VIA ON RAMP. APPLIED THROTTLE TO SPEED UP AND THE THROTTLE IMMEDIATELY ADVANCED TO FULL (6000 RPM) AND WOULD NOT RELEASE OR RETURN TO IDLE. I HAVE A 1999 FORD EXPLORE. THE PROBLEM THAT I HAD WAS WHEN I WAS DRIVING UP A HILL GOING BELOW THE SPEED LIMIT WHILE NOT USING THE SPEED CONTROL MY FORD EXPLORE JUST STARTED TO ACCELERATE AT HIGH SPEEDS BY IT'S SELF. I COULD NOT SLOW IT DOWN. I THOUGHT THAT IT COULD HAVE BEEN THE SPEED CONTROL BUT NO LIGHT WAS ON AND I HIT THE OFF BUTTON SEVERAL TIMES. FINALLY I HAD TO PLACE IT IN NEUTRAL AND THE ENGINE WAS STILL ON ACCELERATION. I CALLED FORD AND THEY DID NOT HELP ME. THEN I HAD IT SENT TO A DEALERSHIP AND HAD THEM DOCUMENT WHAT WAS GOING ON WHICH THEY DID. THEY CHARGED ME SEVEN HUNDRED DOLLARS TO FIX IT AND I AM STILL HAVING PROBLEMS WITH IT. I AM SURE THAT I AM NOT THE ONLY PERSON THAT THIS HAS HAPPEN TOO, AND I AM WORRIED TO DRIVE MY CAR. *TR

THE SPEED CONTROL WAS DISCONNECTED IN OCTOBER OF 2007. HE HAS CALLED FORD AT LEAST HALF A DOZEN TIMES CONCERNING PART AVAILABILITY AND WAS INFORMED EACH TIME THAT FORD HAD NOT YET RELEASED THE PARTS. THERE HAD BEEN NO FAILURE TO DATE. THE RECALL NUMBER WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 165,000.

THE DEALER DOES NOT KNOW WHEN THE PART FOR THE RECALL REPAIR WILL BE AVAILABLE. THE SPEED CONTROL SWITCH WAS DISCONNECTED. THERE HAD BEEN NO FAILURE TO DATE. THE RECALL NUMBER WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 48,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD EXPLORER. THE CONTACT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE IN AUGUST OF 2007 FOR THE VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL: CRUISE CONTROL. AS OF APRIL 10, 2008, THE CRUISE CONTROL HAS NOT BEEN DISCONNECTED. THERE HAD BEEN NO FAILURE TO DATE. THE RECALL NUMBER, CURRENT MILEAGE, AND PURCHASE DATE WERE UNKNOWN.
SAME 2-3 SHIFT PROBLEM. ESPECIALLY WHEN COLD...GAS IT ON THE ON-RAMP, ALL OF A SUDDEN IT "POPS" OUT OF GEAR AND YOU'RE HOPING SOMEONE DOESN'T SLAM INTO THE SIDE OF YOUR VEHICLE. AFTER MY LAST NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE, I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, THEY SAID IT WAS A VALVE BODY GASKET THAT WAS MISSING? (WHERE DID IT GO?) THEY SAID THEY INSTALLED THE UPGRADE KIT AND PUT IN A NEW GASKET, SAID IT WORKED BETTER. ABOUT 4 MONTHS LATER (WHEN IT GOT COLD), IT STARTED AGAIN. WORK & PARTS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE UNDER WARRANTY, BUT THE DEALER "THINKS" IT MIGHT BE SOMETHING ELSE. MY COMPLAINT IS, 4 MONTHS AGO I PAID $900 FOR THEM TO FIX WHAT IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THEIR PRODUCT, THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM IS HAPPENING AGAIN AND THEY ARE LOOKING FOR WAYS TO GET MORE MONEY OUT OF ME, OR WORM THEIR WAY OUT OF FIXING WHAT I'VE ALREADY PAID THEM TO FIX. THE TECHNICIAN SUGGESTED IT MIGHT BE AN INTERNAL LEAK, THE TORQUE CONVERTER, THEN SUGGESTED I MIGHT WANT TO REPLACE THE TRANNY. MY RESPONSE WAS YOU HAD IT TORN APART LAST TIME, YOU DIDN'T FIX THE PROBLEM, WHY SHOULD I TRUST YOU NOW? I DON'T SUBSCRIBE TO THE THEOLOGY OF "REPAIR THROUGH ATTRITION". THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT FORD SHOULD ADDRESS OR BE SUED FOR. *TR

THE VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL WAS DEACTIVATED AT THAT TIME; HOWEVER, THE DEALER STATED THAT THE PART WAS NOT AVAILABLE FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE DEALER IS UNSURE AS TO WHEN THE PARTS WILL ARRIVE. 1999 FORD EXPLORER SPORT -SHIFT LEVER WAS HARD TO SELECT GEAR-THEN WENT SMOOTH,BUT DOES NOT ALIGN PROPERLY WITH CORRECT GEAR. WAS TOLD THAT CABLE AND ROD IN SHIFT COLUMN WERE BROKE/DAMAGED, THAT THIS VERY COMMON WITH MAKE/MODEL/YEAR. WAS TOLD THAT THIS COULD TOTALLY MALFUNCTION WILE DRIVING-ADVISED NOT TO DRIVE. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NHTSA RECALL NOTICE NUMBER 07V336000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL) ON AUGUST 27, 2007. THE INSURANCE COMPANY HAS AN INCIDENT REPORT. THE PURCHASE DATE WAS UNKNOWN. I RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER FROM FORD MOTOR COMPANY IN JULY 2007 FOR A DEFECT IN THE CRUISE CONTROL OF MY 1999 FORD EXPLORER. PER THE RECALL INSTRUCTIONS I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE LOCAL FORD DEALER, JONES WEST FORD IN RENO, NV. RATHER THAN FIX THE DEFECT, JONES WEST FORD DISCONNECTED THE RECALL AND SAID THEY WOULD CALL ME WHEN THE PARTS CAME IN. OVER THE NEXT SEVEN MONTHS, AND DESPITE FIVE CALLS, TWO VISITS TO THE DEALER AND TWO CALLS TO THE FORD CORPORATE CUSTOMER SERVICE, FORD HAS REFUSED TO CORRECT THE DEFECT. *TR

THE DEALER RECENTLY STATED THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY IDEA AS TO WHEN THE PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE REGARDING THE VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL RECALL. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE DEALER IN HER AREA AND SHE NEEDS THE SPEED CONTROL TO DRIVE ON THE INTERSTATE. THERE HAD BEEN NO FAILURE TO DATE. THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS WILL START ON THEIR OWN. WHEN IT HAPPENS, THEY WILL CONTINUE INTERMITTENTLY UNTIL I TURN THE WIPERS ON HIGH THEN TURN THEM BACK OFF. IT IS EXTREMELY INTERMITTENT, SOMETIMES GOING MONTHS BEFORE IT WILL DO IT. HAS BEEN DOING THIS FOR ABOUT A YEAR. *TR

WHEN THE FAILURE BEGAN, SHE WAS ABLE TO OPEN THE DOOR FROM THE INSIDE OR FROM THE OUTSIDE BY ROLLING DOWN THE WINDOW. THE DEALER HAS NOT DIAGNOSED THE FAILURE. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATOR LIGHTS PRESENT. THE CONTACT WILL FOLLOW UP WITH THE MANUFACTURER ON NHTSA CAMPAIGN NOTICE NUMBER 03V280000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:CABLES) SHE RECEIVED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 170,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD EXPLORER. WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH ON A SUNNY DAY HEARD AND FELT A BUMP. SHE OBSERVED FROM THE REARVIEW MIRROR THAT THERE WAS A TIRE IN THE ROAD AND REALIZED IT WAS THE EMERGENCY SPARE TIRE. THERE WAS A BROKEN BOLT FOUND WITH THE TIRE IN THE STREET. THE CONSUMER STATED THE BOLT, CABLE, AND SUSPENSION MECHANISM WAS APPARENTLY RUSTY AND WORN. THE NUMBER OF CYLINDERS WERE UNAVAILABLE. FIRE STARTED FROM CAR TO OUR HOUSE. CAUSED MAJOR DAMAGE TO OUR HOUSE AND ALMOST KILLED OUR CAT. *TR
1999 FORD EXPLORER SPORT WITH 76,655 MILEAGE CAUGHT FIRE, WHICH WAS PUT OUT BEFORE MAJOR DAMAGE OCCURRUED, THE FIRE STARTED AT THE MASTER CYLINDER, AT THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH. *AK
THE PASSENGER DOOR LOCK STOPPED POPPING UP ON THE FIRST PRESS OF THE UNLOCK BUTTON ON THE DOOR. THIS BEGAN ALMOST 2 YEARS AGO. IT REQUIRED MULTIPLE PRESSES ON THE UNLOCK BUTTON TO GET THE DOOR TO UNLOCK. THE PROBLEM HAS NOW OCCURRED ON THE DRIVER' S SIDE DOOR. ONLY THIS TIME IT REQUIRED MANY MORE DEPRESSES TO UNLOCK. I HAVE TO PHYSICALLY PULL THE HANDLE AND PULL UP ON THE DOOR LOCK KNOB TO FORCE IT TO OPEN IF IT WILL OPEN. MY FEAR NOW IS IF I AM IN AN ACCIDENT OR THE TRUCK CATCHES ON FIRE I MAY NOT BE ABLE TO UNLOCK EITHER DOOR. *AK

TL* - THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD EXPLORER. WHILE DRIVING AT 45 MPH THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL STUCK TO THE FLOOR. THE CONTACT ENGAGED THE BRAKE PEDAL, BUT THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. THIS ACCELERATION CONTINUED FOR A QUARTER OF A MILE. THE CONTACT TURNED THE POWER COMPLETELY OFF TO STOP THE ACCELERATION. THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AND THE RPMS WENT ALMOST TO 5, AND TURNED THE ENGINE OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO LOCAL REPAIR SHOP. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 117,500. *AK

HOWEVER, THE DEALER STATED THAT THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED DUE TO THE VIN. ALSO, THE HOOD ON THE VEHICLE WILL NOT OPEN. THE FAILURE HAS NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED. THE DRIVER'S DOOR WILL NOT OPEN WITH THE KEY. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 190,000. *AK

I AM WRITING TO ADD MY VOICE TO THE TEN'S OF THOUSANDS OF UNHAPPY FORD CUSTOMERS WHO HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM FOR A DECADE OF FORD TRANSMISSIONS THAT NO ONE SEEMS TO WANT TO HEAR ABOUT OR HELP US WITH. *TR
ON JANUARY 31, 2006 AFTER ARRIVING HOME FROM WORK WHICH IS APPROXIMATELY 6 BLOCKS FROM MY HOME I NOTICED AN ELECTRICAL SMELL I THOUGHT THAT IT WAS POSSIBLY MY CHRISTMAS LIGHTS ON MY HOME THAT I HAD NOT TAKEN DOWN THEN I FELT THE SIDING AND INSULATION OF MY HOME TO MAKE SURE THAT AN OUTLET WASN'T OVERLOADED OR HOT I EVEN CAME IN AND MOVE MY FURNITURE TO CHECK THE OUTLET CLOSEST TO THE DRIVEWAY AND DIDN'T FIND ANY SOURCE OF THE SMELL. MY BOYFRIEND WENT OUT AND REMOVED THE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS AND SAID HE THOUGHT THE SMELL WAS COMING FROM THE VEHICLE, AT THAT TIME I JUST ASSUMED THAT POSSIBLY IT WAS A BRAKE PAD SMELL OR SOMETHING OF THAT NATURE. THIS VEHICLE CONTAINED NO AFTER MARKET STEREO EQUIPMENT IT ONLY HAD A PROFESSIONALLY INSTALLED ALARM SYSTEM. AFTER THAT INCIDENT THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN APPROXIMATELY 35 MILES ROUND TRIP TWICE TO A LOCAL TOWN WITH NO VEHICLE PROBLEMS OR SMELLS. ON THE MORNING OF JANUARY 1, 2007 I GOT IN THE VEHICLE AND DROVE APPROXIMATELY 6 BLOCKS TO WORK I TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE, GATHERED MY BELONGINGS EXITED THE VEHICLE, USED THE DOOR LOCKS TO SECURE THE VEHICLE CLOCKED IN AT 5:55 A.M. AND AT APPROXIMATELY 6:15 I WAS CALLED OUT OF MY WORK BY A CORRECTIONAL OFFICER TELLING ME THAT MY VEHICLE WAS ON FIRE, IT WAS NOTICED IN A SECURITY CAMERA BY DISPATCH, A FELLOW WORKER USED 3 FIRE EXTINGUISHERS ON THIS VEHICLE BEFORE THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED ONCE THEY ARRIVED THEY HAD TO USE SEVERAL BURST OF WATER TO BRING THE FIRE UNDER CONTROL, THE HOOD LATCH FAILED TO WORK SO THEY HAD TO REMOVE THE HOOD WITH AN AXE BECAUSE THE TIRE WELL WAS STILL GLOWING FROM THE FIRE, THE FIRE WAS PUT OUT AND IT WAS A TOTAL LOSS. *JB
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD EXPLORER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ROD THAT IS USED TO KEEP THE HOOD LIFTED IS TOO SMALL. THE ROD DOES NOT KEEP THE HOOD PROPPED UP AND CAUSES IT TO CLOSE. THE HOOD HAS NEVER FALLEN ON HIM, BUT HE HAS HAD MANY CLOSE CALLS. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN TO THE DEALER, BUT THEY STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS THE CONTACT'S RESPONSIBILITY. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 35,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,000.

WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE, THE DRIVER'S FRONT SEAT WAS ROCKING AND VIBRATING DUE TO THE SEAT FAILURE, THE CONTACT WAS OCCASIONALLY UNABLE TO REACH THE PEDALS. DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS BECAME INOPERABLE. THERE WAS A NHTSA RECALL, #00V072000, REGARDING THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM; FUSES AND CIRCUIT BREAKERS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO THE VIN.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED UPON STARTING THE VEHICLE, THE ENGINE STALLED IMMEDIATELY. THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATING CONSTANTLY. THIS WAS THE FIFTH OCCURRENCE OF THIS PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A SERVICE DEALER ON FOUR OTHER OCCASIONS, WHERE THE DEALER DETERMINED THAT THE IDLE BYPASS VALVE WAS STICKING. THE VALVE WAS REPLACED EACH TIME, BUT THE PROBLEMS PERSISTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALSO NOTIFIED.
99 FORD EXPLORER, 1. NO BRAKES, 2. BRAKE LINE WORE THROUGH DOWN BY THE METAL POWER STEERING PUMP PIPES. 3 HAD IT TOWED TO THE GARAGE. *NM
HOOD WOULD NOT OPEN. AFTER 2 HOURS OF WORKING ON THE LATCH THROUGH THE GRILLE, I FINALLY WAS ABLE TO OPEN THE HOOD. AFTER BUYING A REPLACEMENT FROM MY LOCAL FORD DEALER,$68.00, AND REPLACING THE CORRODED LATCH, THE NEW ONE WORKED FINE. FOR NOW. *AK
JUST LIKE COUNTLESS OTHER FORD EXPLORER OWNERS I AM EXPERIENCING OVERDRIVE MALFUNCTION AND SLIPPING BETWEEN 2ND AND 3RD GEAR. IT SEEMS THAT ALL YEARS OF EXPLORERS ARE AFFECTED BY THIS FLAW. THERE ARE NUMEROUS STORIES OF SERVICE ADVISERS AT DEALERSHIPS ADMITTING THERE IS A DESIGN FLAW WITH THESE TRANSMISSIONS. THERE NUMEROUS INCIDENTS OF PEOPLE PAYING $3000 TO HAVE THE TRANSMISSION REBUILT, ONLY YTO HAVE IT RECUR DAYS, WEEKS, MONTHS LATER. EVERYONE OF US HAS THE SAME EXACT SYMPTOMS AS WELL AS THE COMPLETELY RANDOM ONSET OF THE ISSUE. FORD NEEDS TO RECALL THESE CARS AND DO RIGHT BY THEIR CUSTOMERS. *TR

THE OVERDRIVE LIGHT IN MY 1999 FORD EXPLORER (105,000 MILES) BEGAN FLASHING TODAY & THE TRANSMISSION IS NOT SHIFTING PROPERLY.*JB
ON 10/06/2006 MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING HER 1999 FORD EXPLORER ON I-35 AT APPROX 70 MPH WHEN HER RIGHT REAR TIRE BLEW OUT. ON 10/19/2006 SHE WAS DRIVING ON THE SAME STRETCH OF ROAD AND HER LEFT REAR TIRE BLEW OUT. BOTH TIRES WERE GOODYEAR WRANGLER HT WITH APPROX 21K MILES ON THEM AND WERE INFLATED TO 35 PSI. SHE WAS EXTREMEMLY FORTUNATE IN BOTH CASES AND DID NOT ROLL THE SUV HOWEVER, SHE DID TOTAL THE SUV.
STARTED DRIVING DOWN THE STREET AND NOTICED HEAVY SMOKE COMING FROM HAZORD SWITCH, STOPPED TO CHECK ONCE TRUCK WAS TURNED OFF SMOKE STOPPED STARTED TRUCK UP AGAIN AND WENT ON MY WAY SEVREL MILES FROM HOME SMOKE STARTED AGAIN, COULD NOT LOSE ANY MORE TIME SO I KEPT ON GOING WATCHING FOR ANY FIRE OR SPARKS. MADE IT TO WORK, AT END OF DAY GOT HOME WITH NO ISSUES, MY WIFE DROVE THE TRUCK ( EXPLORER ) LATER THAT EVNING AND SHE ALSO NOTICE SMOKE, WITH IN A FEW DAYS AFTER THIS HAPPEND I NOTICED IT AGIAN AND SOME OF THE DASH LIGHTS STARTED FLIKERING, THE ISSUE OF SMOKE HAS BEEN AN ON GOING THING BUT HAVE NOT SEEN ANY FIRE SO I KEEP DRIVING IT AND LET MY WIFE DRIVE THE NEW CAR FOR HER SAFTY, MY CONSERNS ARE, THE WINDSHIELD WASHER FLUID FOR FRON WINDOW STOPPED WORKING FROM THE FIRST SMOKEING ISSUE AND THEN DASH LIGHTS STARTED SHOTLY AFTER AND NOW I DO NOT KNOW IF THE AIR BAG IS STILL WORKING AND THAT SEEMS TO BE A SAFTY ISSUE TO ME, I NEVER HAD ANY ISSUES WITH THIS TRUCK UNTIL AFTER THE SMOKE FROM THE STEERING COLUM, AFTER THAT I AM HAVE NUTHING BUT ELICTICAL ISSUES.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE TIRE THREADS SEPARATED FROM THE REAR PASSENGER TIRE CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SPIN OUT OF CONTROL AT 55 MPH, AND ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. THE CONTACT PURCHASED THE VEHICLE USED AND WAS UNSURE HOW OLD THE TIRE WAS. THE TIRE MANUFACTURER WAS DUNLOP. SIZE: P235/75R15.
ON 10/06/2006 MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING HER 1999 FORD EXPLORER ON I-35 NORTH OF WACO, TX WHEN HER RIGHT REAR TIRE BLEW OUT. IT WAS A GOODYEAR WRANGLER HT. THE TIRE WAS REPLACED THE NEXT DAY IN DALLAS BY A DEALER. THIS IS RELATED TO COMPLAINT # 10171809.

I WAS AT MY OFFICE WORKING WHEN MY 5 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER CAME TO ME SAYING "MOMMY IT'S AN EMERGENCY, YOUR TRUCK IS SMOKING!" (I HAD BEEN AT THE OFFICE WORKING FOR AN HOUR AND A HALF AFTER PICKING MY CHILDREN UP FROM SCHOOL.) I OPENED THE BACK DOOR TO SEE WHAT SHE WAS TALKING ABOUT AND SAW MY TRUCK ENGULFED IN FLAMES. I RAN BACK INSIDE THE TO CALL 911. A MAN HAD COME INSIDE THE OFFICE TO TELL US A TRUCK WAS ON FIRE, HE WAS ALREADY ON THE PHONE WITH 911. I MOVED MY CHILDREN TO THE FRONT OF THE OFFICE, YELLED FOR EVERYONE PARKED BY MY TRUCK TO MOVE THEIR VEHICLES, AND WENT OUTSIDE IN A PANIC. BY THE TIME THE FIRE DEPARTMENT, POLICE DEPARTMENT AND AMR ARRIVED, THE FIRE HAD SPREAD TO THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE INTERIOR, THE GRILL (FRONT OF THE TRUCK) WAS MELTED, THE ENTIRE HOOD AND FRONT LEFT SIDE OF THE TRUCK WERE BURNED, THE ENGINE WAS MELTED, AND THE FRONT LEFT TIRE HAD EXPLODED AND PARTIALLY MELTED. *JB
1999 EXPLORER LEFT REAR TIRE BLEW OUT AND THEN VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE. *TS THE VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE NEAR THE LEFT REAR TIRE. THE ENTIRE VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE AND BURNED. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED; TWO OF THE CONTINENTAL TIRES PURCHASED FOR THE VEHICLE HAD TREAD SEPARATION FROM THE BELT. THE FIRST TIRE FAILURE WAS ON 7/17/2006. THE SECOND FAILURE OCCURRED ON 9/1/2006, WHILE TRAVELING 50 MPH ON A HIGHWAY IN CLEAR DRY CONDITIONS, THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO VIBRATE. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED OFF THE ROAD, AND THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE WAS REPLACED. THE TIRE WAS TAKEN TO THE SALES DEALER, WHERE THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONTACT THE WARRANTY WAS EXPIRED ON THE TIRE. TL*- THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING HIS 1999 FORD EXPLORER SPORT AND APPLYING HIS BRAKES AT 10 MPH OR LESS THE ABS KICKED IN. THE BRAKE PEDAL LOST RESISTANCE WHEN APPLYING PRESSURE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE CAN FEEL THE PEDAL GOING STRAIGHT TO THE FLOOR. THIS HAPPENS ON A DAILY BASIS, AND SOMETIMES THIS HAPPENS WHEN DRIVING 30 MPH OR MORE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HIS ABS LIGHT TURNED ON 2 DAYS AGO AND IS STILL ON AND WILL NOT TURN OFF. *JB
I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY WHEN I NOTICED A LOSS OF POWER AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STARTED FLASHING AND THE ENTIRE VEHICLE STARTED SHAKING. I PULLED OVER AND EXITED THE VEHICLE. I CALLED THE REPAIR SHOP AND THEY CAME AND TOWED IT BACK TO THEIR SHOP. THE REPAIR MAN TOLD ME THAT A FIRE STARTED UNDER THE HOOD. IT REQUIRED EXTENSIVE REPAIR. UPON FURTHER EXAMINATION HE TOLD ME THAT HE BELIEVED IT STARTED WITH THE SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH. I WAS TALKING TO MY BOSS ABOUT A WEEK AFTER THAT AND HE INFORMED ME THAT THE 1998 EXPLORERS HAD A RECALL FOR THAT EXACT PROBLEM. I FEEL THAT YOU SHOULD INVESTIGATE THE 1999 EXPLORER SPORTS FOR THE SAME THING. *NM
FORD MOTOR COMPANY STILL HAS NOT PROVIDED NECESSARY REPLACEMENT PARTS TO CORRECT FUSED WIRING HARNESS (RECALL 05S28 ISSUED AUGUST 2007) THEY ADVISE IT WILL BE EARLY 2008 BEFORE PART BECOME AVAILABLE. 4+ MONTHS TO RESPOND TO A SERIOUS DEFECT IS EXCESSIVE, AND THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION MUST ADDRESS AND PENALIZE FORD MOTOR COMPANY FOR THIS VERY SLOW RESPONSE TO A SERIOUS ISSUE. *TR
STEERING WHEEL KEPT LOCKING UP. IGNITION CYLINDER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *JB
