NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2022 Ford Explorer. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
When engaging the gear from reverse to drive and vice versa. The car rolls even though the display panel shows gear has shifted. Thus the car even rolls forward or backwards post gear shift as it slowly engages.
No accident, I noticed strap fraying when inspecting the car seat. The lower car seat straps have fraying on them, rendering the car seat unsafe and unusable. My child will not be safe if a car crash would occur, she could potentially be released from the seat. It was reported to evenflo with pictures. They are claiming it is our fault and my 3 year old did it with something sharp. You cannot see the back of the straps as they enter the car seat. We do have photos of the proof. We also know there is an ongoing investigation into evenflo for this very reason.
An alert often shows up on the dashboard "check headlamp system. See manual". This is occasionally associated with one headlamp not working. This happens on and off. The alert spontaneously turns on, may stay for days or weeks and then spontaneously turns off. Ford dealership service were unable to fix this problem. This has happened multiple times since we purchased the car
The contact owns a 2022 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that the passenger’s side rear window failed to roll up. The contact stated that after inspecting the vehicle, as a certified engineer, the master control switch on the driver’s side door had remained in the down position allowing for the window to remain down. The plastic around the switch was warped, causing the switch to remain in a downward position to activate the button. The contact manually raised the window and disconnected the connector from the circuit board to allow all other windows to properly function. The dealer was contacted, and it was confirmed that the VIN was not under recall for the failure. The vehicle had not been taken to the dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was 43,000.
The contact owns a 2022 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked and idling with the air conditioner activated, the rear hatch door window suddenly shattered. The contact stated that during the failure, there was no impact on the window to cause the shattering of the window. The cause of the failure was not yet determined, and the vehicle was not yet repaired. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 28,000.
The contact owns a 2022 Ford Explorer. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V675000 (Power Train) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. There’s no accident . The passenger front recliner is stuck in the reclined position ( laying all the way back ). In the seated position , facing forward , the left side of the seat is stuck . The right side near the passenger door wants to come up, but not the left side. The seat is laying down flat in the reclined position . This is a safety issue .
The vehicle is a hybrid police interceptor utility. The unit was moving running radar and activated its emergency equipment, made a u-turn on a highway cross over, when accelerating in pursuit of a vehicle its engine stalled out and shut off. The vehicle stated to shift to neutral and restart when safe. The officer shifted to neutral and the vehicle would not restart. It was coasted off the roadway and towed. This is the third issue of this type that has occurred with our fleet of ford hybrid police interceptor utilities.
Driving on the highway and the sunroof exploded. No one around and no overpass. No signs of impact or object in or near vehicle. No other damage to vehicle.
The contact owns a 2022 Ford Explorer. The contact stated while reversing, the rearview camera failed to display properly with a delay while shifting into gear. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a hardware system failure which needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure persisted. The dealer stated that a known software system recall had been associated with the vehicle, but the VIN was not associated with the recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was unknown.
1. I had received a Ford Motor Company Ford Customer Service Division, P.O. Box 19043, Dearborn, Michigan 48121-1904 Safety Recall Notice 23S55/NHTSA Recall 23V675 letter dated November 2023. 2. Below are my responses to above questions... - What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? ANSWER: A rear axle bolt may fracture. They have inspected months ago. - How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? ANSWER: I am concern for my wife's safety. - Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? ANSWER: Koons is very aware as I have reached out to service advisors, and sent correspondence (web site emails...don't have copies though) between APR24 - JUL24. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? ANSWER: Yes; months ago. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? ANSWER: Not that we are aware of. Our trigger was the letter sent to us in November 2023. Summary: The letter we received is dated November 2023, we started reaching out to Koons in April 2024, and constantly following up with them. All the same answer...waiting for the part to arrive. That only 5 of these parts come out once a week. I finally gave up in July 2024, as I advised them (by sending web site email, and sending service advisor cell phone a test that we communicate by) that I was going to report to problem to your agency. No response back from either of them. I have written down dates and each time I reached out to them with no luck at all, which is on the original recall letter. To be honest, I am very concern as this is my wife's vehicle to drive. I have advised her to use her parking brake when parking, but understand that there is other impacts if the axle would crack.
The contact owns a 2022 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while his wife was driving at approximately 50 MPH, the hood came ajar and shattered the front windshield. The driver heard two abnormal beeps before the failure. There was glass on the interior of the vehicle. There were no reported injuries. The driver was able to continue driving. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact noticed that the safety latch was missing. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who informed the contact that the latch had to be pulled twice to unlock. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer referred him to the body shop. The manufacturer was contacted and declined a claim for the repair. The failure mileage was approximately 18,000.

Sunroof cover hanging and restricting rear view mirror
The contact owns a 2022 Ford Explorer. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V675000 (Power Train) however, an appointment to repair was not available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The local dealer was made aware of the issue but disconnected the call without scheduling an appointment. The manufacturer was notified of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
Select reverse with gear shift. Does not engage reverse for approximately 8-10 seconds once selected and when engine is warm. Have almost been hit multiple times when backing up because it takes so long to engage reverse.
The backup camera and related system on the 2022 Ford Explorer ST has malfunctioned and failed to show any images. I'd had the vehicle to the dealer on 3 occasions, whereby I've just learned the issue was improperly diagnosed by another dealer as a faulty camera, but the real problem of a faulty processor was diagnosed and therefore not replaced. This issue puts me, other vehicles and pedestrians in particular risk as there is not rear camera image being projected. The problem has been confirmed by two dealers, diagnosed and now indication is to repair it. This is clearly part of the broader issues Ford is having with rear camera back-up systems.
Front suspension makes rattling noise when driving under 20 mi/hr on bumpy roads . Especially noticed in cold temperatures. Dealership replaced sway bar link that has not fixed the Problem. Also power training light flashed multiple times
Transmission fails to smoothly shift, vehicle delays going in reverse after driving causing delays to park and shakes while downshifting. Drivers anticipate the vehicle to be able to backup sooner and can cause accident with delays. Safety 360 display and rear view camera goes completely out, inverts, and has delay when functions. Vehicle has full power failure while driving and can take 10 minutes to turn back on, happened twice.
On 4 separate occasions the brakes on this Explorer failed to engage. The first incident happened as I was backing out of my garage and the brakes did not engage immediately. This resulted in my damaging our trellis. I was traveling at about 5 mph This happened Sept. 2023. The second incident happened as I was coming out of the car wash and applied the brake, but it did not engage and this resulted in a small fender bender with the car in front of me.- Again very slow speed, about 2 MPH Happened in November 2023. The third incident was on the road as I approached a car stopped for a red light. Again the brakes failed to engage, but I was able to avoid the car in front of me by swerving into the lane to the left. Fortunately no car was approaching on that lane this happened November 2023. The final incident again was on the road. The car in front of me was stopped for a left turn and I applied the brakes, the car did not stop so I swerved to the right onto a lawn and side swiped a tree before the brakes finally took hold. I was slowed down to about 30 MPH happened inJanuary 2024.. This failure in the car braking system has resulted in a substantial money loss . After these incidents I am no longer driving the car. I contacted the dealership and they would not look at the vehicle until it was repaired. We will be returning the car to the dealership for their evaluation of the problem.
I have received six (6) notifications of a power train failure, which causes the vehicle to "shudder" at highway speeds. The first issue took place 09/01/2023, and the last was on 11/1/2023. The vehicle then continues to operate normally. If the vehicle is turned off and then on again, the light clears. I took the vehicle to Tamiami Ford for service. They reported that they can see that their is an issue, but are unable to diagnose it.
The contact leased a 2022 Ford Explorer. The contact stated while driving 75 MPH, the vehicle started shuddering uncontrollably and was making an abnormal grinding sound. The contact was able to veer to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the front driver's side axle was fractured. The dealer informed the contact that the failure was unprecedented. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 15,629.
I was informed by Mullinax Ford and the Ford Recall Hotline that a fix for recall 23S55 relating to a potential rollaway risk would not be available until second quarter 2024. This is unacceptable and owners should not be expected to drive a vehicle for almost a year with a potential crash risk.
The contact owns a 2022 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the reverse mode did not function as needed. The contact stated that when the gear shifter was shifted to reverse mode, the vehicle rolled either forward or backwards and then hesitated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, however the failure was not diagnosed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 10,000.

An undisclosed dealer was contacted and confirmed that the part was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
The contact owns a 2022 Ford Explorer. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V342000 (Back Over Prevention) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted and determined that parts were not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
I was driving down the highway and my vehicle suddenly lost power and the motor blew up.
When engaging vehicle from park to gear (ex drive, reverse) or from gear into park there is a delay. Meaning vehicle doesn’t engage into drive or reverse when it is placed in that gear, it will take a moment for gear to engage, sometimes resulting in a jerking motion of vehicle. This jerking motion also happens when vehicle is automatically shifting as speed (rpm) increase. There is also a delay when pacing the vehicle from a moving gear into park, there is a delay of vehicle locking into park, sometimes motion is still felt.
When shifting drive to reverse it takes 4 to 5 seconds to start moving the car. This being a very dangerous situation when backing into a busy street.
The contact owns a 2022 Ford Explorer. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V342000 (Back Over Prevention) however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The local dealer was contacted, and it was confirmed that the part was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact stated that the backup camera displayed a blue screen. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 45,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
As you drive and pick up speed at the range of 29 to 31 mph, exactly the car shutters and shakes. It is known by Ford that the driveshaft needs to be angled due to the hybrid battery location in the car. This particular problem is consistent with a driveshaft replacement that has been known by Ford as well as bearings in the driveshaft. I have had problems with the shuttering in this vehicle almost since day, one of owning it.
Component/System: Low-pressure fuel pump/fuel delivery system related to Recall 25S75. Vehicle is a 2022 Ford Explorer Hybrid. Description: My vehicle is subject to Recall 25S75 involving the low-pressure fuel pump that can cause loss of fuel pressure and engine stalling. The vehicle has stalled six times between about 15,000 and 35,000 miles. The issue is intermittent but ongoing. The vehicle is available for inspection. What failed or malfunctioned: The fuel delivery system appears to lose pressure consistent with Recall 25S75, leading to engine stalling and temporary inability to restart. Safety risk: One stall occurred while driving on a highway on 9/30/23 at about 15,000 miles. The engine lost power without warning and I had to coast to a gas station. Sudden loss of propulsion in traffic creates a serious crash risk. Other stalls happened in driveways or parking lots after the vehicle had been running. In several cases the vehicle would not restart for 20–60 minutes, which could be dangerous if it occurred in traffic or an unsafe location. Reproduction or dealer confirmation: Two incidents required towing to Ford dealerships. The vehicle has been taken to Ford dealers multiple times. Earlier incidents were not linked to a recall at the time. Now that Recall 25S75 has been issued, the symptoms match. Ford has not repaired it because the remedy is still under development and parts are unavailable. Inspections: The vehicle has been inspected by Ford dealerships and towed twice by AAA for diagnosis. No permanent fix has been made because the recall remedy is not yet available. Warnings or symptoms: Stalls often occurred after the vehicle had been running. The vehicle then would not restart for 20–60 minutes. In one event there were dashboard errors. There was not always a clear warning before a stall. Reason for complaint: The recall has been open since July 2025 with no remedy available. The vehicle continues to stall. I do not feel it is safe to operate.
The failed component is the cruise control. It is available for inspection. Unknowingly, the speed increased by 10 miles an hour, without touching any buttons or controls on the steering wheel. With cruise control on, the driver might be not as engaged with the automobile, as if there was no cruise control. I will have the issue brought before my Ford dealer on Monday, September 25, 2023. There were no warning, lamps, messages, or other symptoms prior to the cruise control increasing speed. It only increase speed by 10 miles an hour. However, it occurred at 55 miles an hour, and 70 miles an hour. The issue occurred on a drive from Des Moines Iowa to Evansville Indiana on Monday, September 18. Driving conditions were perfect, no rain dry payment. This incident occurred four times during the 9 hour drive.
The contact owns a 2022 Ford Explorer. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the tires began to make a thumping sound and the steering wheel started to vibrate. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the axle seal needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 26,000.
The contact owns a 2022 Ford Explorer. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V342000 (Back Over Prevention) however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact stated that the image on the sync screen was blue. The failure mileage was 14,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
The plastic window switch has peeled, creating essentially a very sharp edge that has cut me and caused bleeding and pain. It is available for inspection and I have pictures. This is a problem known to Ford. The vehicle was dropped of at a Ford dealership, Crossley Ford Liberty, MO. The problem identified, but not covered under warranty.
While merging on to the freeway, while trying to achieve freeway speed, the Explorer lost all power for about 10 seconds. During that time, multiple error messages appeared on my dashboard. The messages included "Pre-Collision Assist Not Available" and "See Manual". Several Error message were sent to my FordPass app. The messages include: 1."Service Engine Soon Warning - The powertrain control system speed sensors have detected the transmission did not achieve the gear expected and may be slipping internally..." 2."Service Engine Soon Warning - The powertrain control system has detected an internal PCM communication error. The PCM will invoked failure mode effects management (FMEM) operating strategy that maintains limited vehicle function..." 3."Pre- Collision Assist Not Available - The collision warning system has detected either a fault or an obstructed radar sensor". 4. "Powertrain Malfunction/Reduced Power - Illuminates when the system has detected a powertrain or a four-wheel drive fault. I was almost rear ended because I could not achieve freeway speed while merging onto the freeway. The vehicle has been at the dealership for 3 days. I am still waiting to find out what the diagnosis is.
Vehicle was pushing blue smoke, dealership replaced the turbo. Blue smoke returned furiously and dealership replaced the top end including valve assembly. While on a 900 mile journey through northern idaho, the engine completely failed at highway speed leaving me stranded. Ford believes they have cured the valve issue when in fact a new long block motor failed on first long distance trip. Please don't let anyone else go through this I lost thousands of dollars in out of pocket expenses, missed my best friends funeral among other things. These manufacturers need to be held accountable for poor workmanship!!!
Car has recall for rear end bolt that breaks, took car in to have repair made. Came home with a software update that sets the park brake when you put car in park, and then when start the car and put into gear you press the accelerator or press the button, the car will lunge forward or reverse when you press accelerator, not safe at all! From what I have read the NHSTA approved this (fix) instead of fixing the sub frame and more bolts like it should be, instead of a auto parking brake that sets every time. I do feel this is a extreme safety issue and should be addressed immediately! Shame on you and Ford, an auto park brake is not a solution, only a poor band-aid !
Windshield stress crack developed overnight. First notices July 18th as small crack (less than 6 inches) on right top third. Over the week grew to 8 inches. Less than 10,000 miles and under 1 year. Ford considers this a wear item and is only covered for 90 days. Currently available for inspection. Not driving car in case the windshield completely fails. Windshield will be inspected and replaced by insurance.
While driving a significant rumble and vibration occurs under the center console. This typically occurs while coasting, usually around 40 mph. When this occurred on the freeway, I felt I may lose control of the car and immediately exited to slow speeds.
I was backing up at low speed (less than 1 mph) to park by gently letting my foot off the brake to back. I was using the rear backup camera to gauge how far I could go back without striking the vehicle behind me. The screen showed video that I was still several feet away from the vehicle behind me when I felt a sudden bump. I stepped on the brake hard to ensure I was no longer moving but the camera still showed several feet between my rear bumper and the vehicle behind me. I put the vehicle in park and got out to verify that I had struck the vehicle behind me. I had. I returned to the driver’s seat, put the vehicle back in reverse to see what the camera showed and now it appeared on the screen that my bumper was touching the vehicle behind me. The video on the screen had absolutely froze while I was backing, which contributed to me making an error in judgement while backing, causing me to strike the vehicle behind me. The DuPage County Sheriff’s Office (Illinois) completed a crash report. SOPC23-08519
The contact rented a 2022 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while her husband was driving approximately 65 mph, attempting to slow down, he crashed into a deer. There were no warning lights illuminated. The passenger-side front knee air bag was partially deployed. The passenger sustained bruising to her lower leg. There was a plastic substance released from the air bag which cut her ankle. The passenger was taken to the hospital where medical attention was provided. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot. A police report was filed. There were no reported fire. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 36,000. The VIN was not available.
The AC has been blowing hot air. I took it to Ford motor service department and they said there was a Freon leak and a hole in the condenser. I had several other mechanics look at it and they said that it is fully charge with Freon, is no leak and the compressor is turning fine. Today it was 108 inside my car with all the windows down driving from work. It is suffocating driving it like that Ford charge me $170 to diagnose it and refused to cover it under warranty. The other mechanics that looked at it do not agree with Ford’s diagnostics and felt that it was an electrical problem that was not allowing communication to properly. Turn the AC on to blow cold air. My vehicle has been in the service department for other times for electrical issues. I also reached out to Ford to see if there was a lemon law regarding my 2022 Explorer. They told me because my car was over 24,000 miles I would not qualify my only option at this point is to trade in the vehicle, which they are giving me $14,000 less on because of the electrical issues at Ford . I’m a registered nurse, working full-time and a single mom with a daughter that is going through chemotherapy right now. I really expected the dealership to be more honest and their service department about what is actually going on with a car and actually try to help us. Instead, I believe they’re being dishonest and not assuming what is really wrong with the vehicle. I’m hoping that you guys will help consumers like myself by informing us to make better decisions when purchasing a new vehicle. Thank you in advance for everything that you do.
The contact owns a 2022 Ford Explorer. The contact stated while driving approximately 55 MPH and ascending an incline, the transmission slipped out of gear, and the vehicle started to lose motive power. The contact stated that the “Pre-Collision Assist Unavailable” and “Powertrain Malfunction/Reduced Power” warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle would rev when the accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to respond. The contact was able to return to the original destination however, the vehicle had to be restarted for the vehicle to operate as needed. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a dealer or independent mechanic to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 26,000.
While attempting to reverse the vehicle has a delay, or rolls forward, and then vehicle will hard shift into gear quite roughly. the vehicle was taken to the dealership in 02/23 for repair where it spent 2 weeks at a mileage of 5650. the dealership did what they would fix the issue. Well in June 2023 the issue started happening again, and now slips while driving. For as much as i paid for this car, this should not be happening. It is a serious safety hazard that could result in an accident or someone being hurt. My vehicle should not have to go back into the shop again, and Ford needs to resolve these issues, or provide replacement transportation given the amount of time the dealer has to have for repairs. This is my only vehicle. They should replace the transmission, and see if it resolves the issue. This is a know issue, and it needs fixed asap.
AT MY 10,000 MILE SERVICE, ON JUNE 08, 2023, I WAS TOLD THAT THE REAR SHOCKS WERE LEAKING. I WAS ALSO TOLD BY THE FORD DEALERSHIP THAT THEY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED BUT WERE ON BACK ORDER DUE TO THE LARGE NUMBER OF SHOCKS THAT HAVE FAILED ON THIS MODEL VEHICLE. IT IS NOW SEPTEMBER 12, 2023 AND THE SHOCKS ARE STILL ON BACK ORDER AND I NOW HAVE 14,500 MI ON THE VEHICLE. OVER 3 MONTHS AND ADDITIONAL 4,500 MILES ON DEFECTIVE SHOCKS THAT ARE STILL ON BACK ORDER SEEMS LIKE A SAFETY ISSUE TO ME.
The contact owns a 2022 Ford Explorer. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number 23V022000 (Back Over Prevention) however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The local dealer was contacted, and it was confirmed that the part was not available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool showed no information of the recall.
