ABS BRAKE SYSTEM WAS DEFECTIVE AND REAR BRAKES WERE NOT WORKING. CONSUMER CONTACTED THE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. THE BRAKES WERE 60% DEFECTIVE. *AK THE DEALER LATER DETERMINED THAT THE VEHICLE'S REAR ABS VALVE WAS STICKING. *NM
GASKET FAILURE CAUSED WATER TO LEAK INTO THE ENGINE. THIS CAUSED THE CYLINDER ROD TO KNOCK AND THE ENGINE TO FAIL. MUST REPLACE THE ENGINE AS A RESULT. *AK
VEHICLE PARKED APPROX 48 HOURS, CRUISE CONTROL DID NOT WORK, FLAMES COMING FROM ENGINE COMPARTMENT
WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH THE CONSUMER LOST STEERING POWER. THE CONSUMER WAS NOT ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, AND CRASHED INTO A GUARDRAIL. UPON IMPACT, BOTH FRONTAL AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION, AND THE MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE STEERING SHAFT BROKE, AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *AK *SC *JB
WHILE SHIFTING INTO REVERSE VEHICLE FAILED TO MOVE. CONSUMER GOT OUT OF THE VEHICLE TO INSPECT IT, AND NOTICED THAT BOTH FRONT DRIVER SIDE AND PASSENGER SIDE TIRES WERE TURN INWARD. CONSUMER HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP FOR INSPECTION AND THE MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT BOTH INNER TIRE RODS HAD POPPED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *AK
FIRE ORIGINATED IN LR QUADRANT OF ENGINE COMPARTMENT. OWNER HAD PARKED VEHICLE IN DRIVEWAY 15-30 MINUTES PRIOR TO FIRE. VEHICLE NOT RUNNING AT TIME OF FIRE. ORIGIN IS AT OR NEAR MASTER BRAKE CYLINDER.*AK
I HAD A 1997 FORD F-150 THAT WAS SETTING UNDER MY GRANDMOTHERS CARPORT BECAUSE THE IBS LIGHT HAD CAME ON AND I WAS USING HERE CAR UNTIL I COULD GET THE FORD COMPANY TO COME PICK IT UP TO FIX IT IT SET THERE FROM SUNDAY AND HAD NOT BEEN MOVED OR STARTED AND ON THE FOLLOWING THUIRSDAY BURST INTO FLAMES CAUSEINF A HOUSE FIRE MY GRANDMOTHER LOST EVRYTHING
TRUCK STARTED; HOWEVER, WOULD NOT GO INTO DRIVE. CONNECTOR FOR CRUISE CONTROL SHUT OFF ON BRAKE MASTER CYLINDAR WAS BURNT. OCCURED WHILE IN PARKING LOT WITH ENGINE SHUT OFF. APPEARS THAT THE BRAKE RELAY LEAKED BRAKE FLUID INTO CONNECTOR CAUSING SHORT. FORD DID NOT REPLACE CONNECTOR. CRUISE CONTROL NO LONGER FUNCTIONS. FORD ONLY REPLACED BRAKE RELAY AT MY COST. DID NOT REPLACE FRIED CONNECTOR.*AK
I OWN A 97 FORD F-150 WITH A 4.2L, V6. ON JULY 16, 2004, THE ENGINE BEGAN MAKING A KNOCKING SOUND. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO 2 MECHANICS AND BOTH CONFIRMED THAT THE HEAD GASKET HAD FAILED, WHICH ALLOWED COOLANT TO LEAK INTO THE CYLINDER. AT COLD START, THE COOLANT IN THE CYLINDER CAUSED THE PISTON ROD TO BEND. MECHANICS STATED THAT NEW ENGINE WOULD COST $3,000 - 3,500 TO REPLACE. *LA
FIRESTONE TIRE - 235/70 R16 WILDERNESS HT DOTW208IPT186. WHILE DRIVING, THE TREAD SEPARATED FROM THE TIRE. THE TIRE ONLY HAD 24000 MILES ON IT. *JB THE TIRE CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE RIGHT REAR QUARTER PANEL, FRAME BRACE AND MUFFLER BRACKET. *NM
AN EXPLOSION WOKE US UP AT APPROX 4:00 AM ON JULY 06. OUR 1997 FORD F150 PICK UP WAS ON FIRE AND DESTROYED A 2001 4 RUNNER, 2001 LARSON BOAT, CARPORT ETC.*AK THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN PARKED FOR 2 DAYS AND MOVED ONCE A VERY SHORT DISTABCE DURING THAT TIME. THE FIRE SEEMED TO COME FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. PRIOR TO THE FIRE THE CRUSIE CONTROL STOPPED WORKING AND WE HAD TO REPLACE A FUSE BECUSE THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT COME OUT OF PARK. WE REPLACED THE FUSE 3 OR 4 TIMES. ON THE LAST TIME WE JUST PARKED THE VEHICLE AFTER THE FUSE WAS REPLACED AND DID NOT DRIVE IT. THE ONLY ELECTRONIC AFTERMARKET EQUIPMENT WAS A STEREO PROFFESIONALY INSTALLED A YEAR BEFORE THE FIRE. THE FIRE DID NOT SPREAD TO THE HOUSE BUT DID SPREAD TO ANOTHER VEHICLE, THE CAR PORT, AND A BOAT. 35MM PHOTOGRAPHS HAVE BEEN TAKEN AND WILL BE SENT TO BRUCE YORK. VEHICLE WAS INSURED LIABILITY ONLY.
I HAD A TUNE-UP PERFORMED BY THE FIVE-STAR FORD DEALERSHIP IN NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, TEXAS IN JULY 2001. ON JULY 3, 2004, I WAS DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY WHEN I HEARD A LOUD POPPING NOISE FROM THE ENGINE. I LATER FOUND THAT THE #3 SPARKPLUG HAD BLOWN FREE FROM THE ENGINE AND HAD STRIPPED ALL THREADS FROM THE ALUMINUM HEAD. THE FORD DEALERSHIP DENIES ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE DEFECTIVE HEAD OR FOR DAMAGING THE HEAD BY IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF THE SPARKPLUG. *LA

CONSUMER COMPLAINED THAT REAR PASSENGER'S TIRE HAD TREAD SEPARATION. GENERAL, GRABBER ST, P235/70R16. THERE WAS APPROXIMATED 50,415 MILES ON THE TIRE. *NM
WHILE VEHICLE WAS STOPPED AND BRAKES WERE DEPRESSED CONSUMER WAS READY TO SHIFT PARK PAIL INTO REVERSE AND BRAKE PEDAL TRAVELED TO FLOORBOARD. DEALERSHIP SERVICED VEHICLE AND REPLACED THE BRAKE LINE. *AK
REAR SLIDING GLASS WINDOW LEAKING IN THE INSIDE TOP LEFT SECTION. TAKEN TO FORD DEALER WHO IN TURN SUBCONTRACTS OUT TO A LEAK SPECIALIST. I WAS INFORM BY THE SERVICE DESK THAT HE INFORM THEM THAT I WOULD NEED TO REPLACE THE WHOLE REAR WINDOW AT A COST ESTIMATE OF A COUPLE HUNDRED DOLLARS. I IN TURN CONTACTED FORD MOTOR COMPANY AND OF COURSE MY VEHICLE IS NOW OUT OF WARRANTY. I OWN A 1997 FORD F-150 WITH 82,000 MILES. I WAS INFORMED BY FORD MOTOR CO. THAT THE DEALERS ARE FRANCHISED AND WHAT EVER POLICY THEY HAVE IN PLACE FORD CO. CAN'T CONTROL. *AK
WHEN ATTEMPTING TO CLEAN THE POSITIVE BATTERY TERMINAL ENGINE STARTED. *AK
I HAVE ONE OF THE F-150'S 1997 FORD TRUCK THAT CAUGHT ON FIRE WITH NO ONE IN THE TRUCK AND ENGINE OFF. TOTAL LOSS; CONTACTED FORD WITH NO SATISFACTION FROM THEM; THEY COULD HAVE CARED LESS. TRUCK IS IN MY BACK YARD AND CAN E-MAIL YOU PICTURES; IF YOU CAN PROVIDE ME WITH THE CORRECT ADDRESS. *JB
WHEN TRYING TO START THE VEHICLE THE CONSUMER HEARD A LOUD BANGING NOISE IN THE ENGINE. THE CONSUMER DRAINED THE OIL PAN AND FOUND A HALF A CUP OF WATER BEFORE THE OIL CAME OUT. THE CONSUMER FOUND ON A WEB SIGHT THAT THIS VEHICLE HAD A PROBLEM WITH TWO GASKETS ON THE ENGINE. THE DEALER IS NOT CLAIMING RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE PROBLEM. *LA
VEHICLE WAS PARKED OUTSIDE OF THE HOME. EIGHT HOURS LATER,THE VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE. DRIVER CALLED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT TO EXTINGUISH OUT THE FIRE. VEHICLE WAS TOWED AND TOTALED BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY. *AK
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FAILURE OF OVERDRIVE. OVERDRIVE WILL GO OUT ALL AT ONCE, LOOSING SPEED AND BECOMING A HAZARD IN MIDDLE OF ROAD. *AK
DT: THE CONSUMER OWNS A 97 FORD F150 AND THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH CAUGHT FIRE AND BURNED THE MASTER CYLINDER AND WIRING HARNESS AT THE SWITCH. ALSO IT BLEW A FUSE IN THE CIRCUIT THAT KEPT IT FROM BURNING FURTHER. WHEN THE CONSUMER WENT TO START THE VEHICLE, IT WOULD NOT SHIFT OUT OF PARK BECAUSE THE ABS CIRCUIT WAS DISABLED. THE CONSUMER BOUGHT MATERIALS TO REPAIR THE DAMAGE. AFTER WHICH FORD HAD RECALLED LATER MODEL PICK UPS. THE CONSUMER FEELS THIS IS A WIDE SPREAD PROBLEM AND OTHER YEARS WERE AFFECTED ALSO. *JB

CONSUMER REQUEST A RESPONSE TO A QUESTION HE SUBMITTED TO NHTSA RE THE 4.6 LITER ENGINE EXPLODING IN HIS 1997 FORD F-SERIES PICKUP TRUCK. *MR THE VEHICLE'S ENGINE EXPLODED AS THE CONSUMER TURNED THE KEY IN THE IGNITION. *NM
HOOD PRIMARY LATCH MALFUNCTIONED. *AK
LOCATION OF EXHAUST PIPE IS AFFECTING BRAKE EQUIPMENT. *MR DUE TO THE EXHAUST PIPE BEING PLACED IN FRONT OF THE REAR TIRE, THE HEAT DETERIORATES THE REAR BRAKE BACKING PANEL AFFECTING THE BRAKES AND SHATTERING THE CENTER WHEEL HUB. THE DEALER ADVISED THE CONSUMER OF HAVING THE MUFFLER TAIL PIPE RE-ROUTED TO THE REAR OF THE TIRE AS SUBSEQUENT MODELS OF THE VEHICLE. *SC *JB
MAY 27TH, 2004, I DROVE MY FORD F150 PICK UP FROM A WORK SITE TO MY HOME ARRIVING AT ABOUT 9:40 P.M. I NOTICED THE BRAKE LIGHT WAS ON, AND DOUBLE CHECKED TO MAKE SURE THE BRAKE WAS OFF. THE LIGHT REMAINED ON AND I THOUGHT I WOULD CHECK THAT OUT ON THE WEEKEND. THE TRUCK RAN NORMALLY ON THE RIDE HOME. I WENT TO SLEEP AND WAS AWAKENED BY OUR DOG'S BARKING AT 12:30 A.M. TO DISCOVER THAT THE FORD F150 PICK UP WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES. THE FLAMES WERE COMING OUT OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND BEGINNING TO SPREAD TO THE CAB. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED AND THEY ARRIVED QUICKLY AND IT TOOK ABOUT FIVE MINUTES WITH THE HOSE FULLY ON THE FIRE TO PUT IT OUT. THERE WERE PERSONAL ITEMS LOST IN THE TRUCK, THERE WAS DAMAGE TO THE HOUSE, PAINT BUBBLED, PLANTS WERE KILLED, THE DRIVE WAY WAS STAINED AND DAMAGED, AND WE WERE ALL TRAUMATIZED.*AK
PARKED FORD F 150 (1997) IN DRIVEWAY AT ABOUT 9:30 P.M. NOTICED NOTHING UNUSUAL EXCEPT THAT THE BRAKE LIGHT HAD BEEN GLOWING AFTER THE BRAKE WAS RELEASED. APPROXIMATELY AT 11:30 P.M. WE WERE AWAKEN BY OUR DOG, AND FOUND THE F 150 ON FIRE. THE HOOD AREA WAS TOTALLY ENGULFED IN FLAME AND FLAMES WERE REACHING 20 FEET IN THE AIR. F 150 WAS TOO DAMAGED TO FIND CAUSE, PER INSURANCE COMPANY. INSURANCE CLAIM PAID $10,000.00. DAMAGE CAUSED TO HOUSE, PAINT BUBBLED EXTENSIVELY ON WOODWORK, RAIN WATER DRAIN ALONG ROOF MELTED. A NUMBER OF ITEMS WERE LOST IN THE FIRE THAT WERE IN THE CAB. EMOTIONAL TRAUMA OF EVENT IMPACTED WHOLE FAMILY.*AK
I OWN A 1997 FORD F-150 WITH A V6 4.2 LITER MOTOR. LAST WEEK TO MY SURPRISE MY TRUCK STARTED KNOCKING. I FOUND THE REASON FOR THIS PROBLEM WAS A FAULTY HEAD GASKET DESIGN BY FORD. I HAD CHECKED FOR RECALLS ON MY TRUCK MANY TIMES BEFORE, AND AS EARLY AS JANUARY, 2000 (WHEN I STILL HAD MY WARRANTY) I CHECKED FOR A POSSIBLE RECALL, BUT I WAS NEVER INFORMED OF THIS PROBLEM LIKE MANY OTHER 1997-1998 4.2 LITER OWNERS. TODAY THIS LEAVES ME WITH A USELESS TRUCK THAT NEEDS AND $4000 ENGINE REPLACEMENT. I JUST FEEL THAT I SHOULD OF BEEN NOTIFIED OF THIS DESIGN FLAW BEFORE IT HAPPENED, AND MY TRUCK SHOULD NOT HAVE A PROBLEM LIKE THIS WITH UNDER 100,000 MILES. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP. *LA
WHILE DRIVING AT 30 MPH CONSUMER TRIED TO MAKE A RIGHT AND THE VEHICLE KEPT GOING STRAIGHT. VEHICLE ENDED UP IN A DITCH ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, WHO VERIFIED THAT THE STEERING ARM FELL OFF THE STEERING BOX. *AK

CURRENTLY, THE REPLACED CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH WAS BEGINNING TO LEAK AGAIN.*AK CONSUMER SAW SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND FOUND THE MASTER CYLINDER SWITCH WAS LEAKING BRAKE FLUID AGAIN. *TT
DT: THE CONSUMER OWNS A 1997 FORD F150 XLT. THE CONSUMER WAS INVOLVED WAS IN A CAR ACCIDENT OVER A YEAR AGO, AND THE DRIVER'S SEAT BROKE. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE DRIVERS SEAT WITH ANOTHER BRACKET. THE SEAT BROKE AGAIN. WHEN SITTING IN THE SEAT THE BACK OF THE SEAT WENT DOWN TO THE FLOOR WHILE THE FRONT OF THE SEAT RAISED UP. THE BRACKET HAS BEEN REPLACED THREE TIMES. THE ABS LIGHT ILLUMINATED. *AK
JUST LIKE THE THREE OTHER PEOPLE I FOUND ON THIS SITE MY HUSBANDS F150 CAUGHT FIRE. WE HAD WENT TO THE DOCTORS OFFICE AND HAD BEEN PARK ABOUT AN HOUR AND A HALF WHEN THEY ANNOUCED THAT A TRUCK WAS ON FIRE! WE RAN OUT TO FIND IT WAS OURS. THE FIRE DEPT. SAID IT WAS AN ELECTICAL PROBLEM THAT STARTED THE FIRE. M.V. IN LA. *AK
CONSUMER STATED THE BATTERY SEEMED TO BE DEAD. THE NEXT DAY THE DRIVER ATTEMPTED TO START VEHICLE AGAIN. THE DRIVER COULD HEAR A LOUD BANGING NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE. THE MECHANIC STATED WATER HAD SEEPED DOWN INTO THE CYLINDERS. *JB
MY FORD 1997 F-150 CAUGHT FIRE OUTSIDE A COFFEE SHOP. IT HAD BEEN OFF FOR AT LEAST 30 MINUTES. SOMEONE CAME AROUND AND TOLD ME THE TRUCK WAS ON FIRE. THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS REPORTED TO BE THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH AND LED TO THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER. I HAVE NOT FIXED THE TRUCK YET. *AK
RECALL 97V147000,TRANSMISSION FAILED TO SHIFT OUT OF PARK AFTER VEHICLE WAS STARTED. THIS WAS DUE TO TA DEFECT IN THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT CABLE. THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO VIN. *AK *TC
MY 19'97 FORD F-150 HAD AN ELECTRICAL FIRE YESTERDAY. IT HAD BEEN PARKED FOR OVER THIRTY MINUTES WHEN SOMEONE TOLD ME IT WAS ON FIRE. AFTER I PUT THE FIRE OUT AND THE FIRE DEPARTMENT CAME. THEY SAID THE FIRE STARTED AROUND THE FUSE BOX AREA. I HAVE READ THAT OTHERS HAVE HAD THE SAME FIRE I HAVE HAD.*AK
EL CAJON FORD REPLACED PLUGS. NEVER WARNED ME ABOUT PLUG BLOWOUT. HEARD TICKING FOR 2 WEEKS BUT THOUGHT IT WAS MINOR EXHAUST LEAK. PLUG BLEW OUT DRIVING HOME AT 30 MPH. TOWED TRUCK TO EL CAJON FORD AND SERVICE WRITER SAID FORD WOULD ONLY REPLACE THE HEAD AT $3500 WITH THE SAME DEFECTIVE HEAD. I ASKED ABOUT THE DEPENDABILITY OF THE OTHER HEAD AND HE SAID THAT THIS PROBLEM WAS VERY RARE AND USUALLY ONLY HAPPENED WITH THE LIGHTNING AND ONLY 1 PLUG WAS EVER BAD IN EACH MOTOR. I REFUSED REPAIR AT FORD AND HAD THE TRUCK TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. *NM
MY 1997 FORD F-150, WHICH HAS BEEN PRIMARILY DRIVEN ON THE HIGHWAY, AND HAS BEEN WELL-MAINTAINED THROUGHOUT IT'S LIFESPAN, JUST THREW A ROD AT 107,000 MILES. THIS IS RIDICULOUS THAT THIS SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED AT THIS LOW MILEAGE. I WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT IF THERE ARE ANY COMPLAINTS ON RECORD REGARDING THIS AND THE BEST WAY TO HANDLE IT WITH FORD. *JB
FAILED LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKETS IN FORD 4.2 LITER ENGINES. I THINK ENOUGH OF THESE HAVE FAILED TO REQUIRE FORD MOTOR COMPANY TO ISSUE A RECALL TO REPAIR OR REIMBURSE THOSE OF US WHO HAVE ALREADY HAD THE REPAIR COMPLETED OR HAD TO REPLACE OUR ENGINES DUE TO THE FAILURE.*AK
THE SHIFTER CABLE WAS DEFECTIVE. IT WILL NOT GO INTO PARK AND THE CONSUMER HAD TO KEEP SLAMMING IT. *JB
I DIDN'T REALLY NOTICE ANYTHING JUST ONE DAY MY ENGINE STARTED MAKING LOUD KNOCKING SOUND TOOK IT IN FOR SERVICING AND FOUND OUT I SPUN A ROD I REPLACED THE ENGINE. *JB
I HAVE A FORD F150 TRUCK WITH THE 4.2L ENGINE. VIN # FTDX1725VKA71538 MY LEFT LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD SIDE GASKET FAILED. THIS ALLOWED COOLANT TO LEAK INTO A CYLINDER AND DAMAGE THE ENGINE. THE DAMAGE IS DESCRIBED IN FORD'S TSB ARTICLE # 99-20-7.*AK
MY TRUCK WAS LOOSING WATER TO THE OIL PAN AND CAUSED THE ENGINE TO NEED REPLACING IN 2004. FORD CHARGED ME 5200.00 TO REPLACE THE ENGINE AND SAID THE WARRANTY WOULD NOT COVER IT. NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN 05V0170000 CONCERNING CRUISE CONTROL. VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN THE GARAGE FOR SOME 8 HOURS WHEN THE SMOKE DETECTOR WENT OFF. CONSUMERS IMMEDIATELY EXITED THE HOME, AND THE FIRE DEPARTMENT RESPONDED. THE HOME AND TWO VEHICLE WERE DESTROYED IN THE FIRE. *AK
