THE TRUCK HAS A ROD KNOCKING SOUND COMING FROM THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THE FRONT COVER GASKET AND MANIFOLD SIDE GASKET FAILED ALLOWING COOLANT TO LEAK INTO THE CYLINDER. AT COLD START, THE COOLANT IN THE CYLINDER CAUSED THE PISTON ROD TO BREAK. HE ALSO STATED THAT THE ENGINE WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF APPROXIMATELY $5000. *NM
CONSUMER SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF AND EXITED THE VEHICLE. LATER, CONSUMER ENTERED THE VEHICLE. TURNED THE IGNITION ON, AND VEHICLE STARTED BUT WOULD NOT GO INTO GEAR. THEN, CONSUMER EXITED THE VEHICLE , OPENED THE HOOD, AND NOTICED THERE WAS A FIRE INSIDE THE HOOD. THE DEFECT WAS THE CRUISE CONTROL RELAY. THE FIRE WAS EXTINGUISHED BY THE CONSUMER.*AK
PICKED UP 1 YARD OF MULCH AND WAS UNLOADING, SMELLED BURNING RUBBER, AND SAW FLAMES IN WHEEL WELL. PUT OUT FIRE WITH FIRE EXTINGUISHER AND CALLED FIRE DEPARTMENT. OPENED HOOD, AND SAW FENDER BURNED, PLASTIC BRAKE NEAR MASTER CYLINDER BURNED, AND FUSE BOX AND WIRING BURNED. FIRE DEPARTMENT SAID IT WAS BAD WIRING. MECHANIC FELT IT INVOLVED THE BRAKES. ALSO, CRUISE CONTROL HAD NOT WORKED FOR NEARLY SIX MONTHS BEFORE FIRE.*AK
WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH REAR PASSENGER SIDE TIRE RUBBER CAP CAME OFF THE TIRE. DEALERSHIP WAS NOTIFIED, BUT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. FIRESTONE. WILDERNESS, P235/70R16. *AK
HORN STOPPED WORKING, KEEPS BLOWING FUSES. TRAILER TOW LIGHTS STOPPED WORKING. DEALER REPORTS THE SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH BAD AND REPLACED. ALSO FOUND A SHORT CIRCUIT AT THE STEERING COLUMN
I HAD JUST ARRIVED BACK IN LAKELAND FL FROM A TRIP TO THE EAST COAST. I STOPPED AT A STORE TO BUY A FEW THINGS AND WHEN I CAME OUT AND STARTED MY 5.4 LITER F- 250 LIGHT DUTY TRUCK IT BLEW A SPARK PLUG ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. IT WAS THE SECOND PLUG FROM THE REAR. MY TRUCK IS A 1997 FORD WITH 100500 APPROXIMATELY MILES ON IT. I HAD IT TOWED TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP THAT I BOUGHT IT FROM FOR REPAIR. THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID HE HAD NEVER HEARD OF TRITON ENGINES BLOWING SPARK PLUGS. I HAPPENED TO KNOW A PERSON THAT WORKED IN THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND ACCORDING TO THAT INDIVIDUAL IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM NORMALLY REQUIRING A NEW HEAD AT A COST OF AROUND $3000 BUT SOME COULD BE REPAIRED BY LNSTALLING A NEW PLUG IF I WAS LUCKY. HOWEVER FORD WOULD NOT GUARANTEE THE INSTALLATION OF A NEW PLUG REPAIR. UPON GOING ONLINE I FOUND OUT THAT ALOT OF OTHER PEOPLE ARE HAVEING THE SAME PROBLEM AND FORD IS DONING LITTLE OR NOTHING ABOUT IT. I FOUND THAT PRIOR TO THE PLUG BLOWING MOST PEOPLE WERE HEARING A KNOCKING NOISE ON A COLD START. I HAD HEARD THAT THE WEEK PRIOR TO MY PLUG BLOWING. AFTER THE REPAIR THE NOISE WAS GONE FOR ABOUT 4 DAYS. WE HAD A COLD FRONT COME THRU AND WHEN I STARTED MY TRUCK THAT MORNING THE NOISE WAS BACK AND MUCH WORSE. I TRADED MY TRUCK AS A RESULT. NO OLD PARTS WERE AVAILABLE. THEY DISCARDED THEM. THEY ALSO ASSURED ME THAT THEY HAD RETORQUED ALL THE PLUGS. I HAD HAD ALL THE PLUGS REPLACED AT APPROX. 80,000 MILES BY A FORD DEALER. BIGSERT MAKES A KIT FOR INSTALLING AN INSERT IN TRITON ENGINES. IT COMES COMPLETE WITH ALL THE SPECIAL TOOLS REQUIRED TO DO THE JOB. IF THERE IS NOT A DEMAND FOR SUCH A KIT COMPANIES WONT GO TH THE EXPENSE OF DISIGNING SUCH A KIT. *AK
MY 1997 F-150 THE DOME LIGHTS WONT GO OFF . I HAVE SEEN AT LEAST 3 OTHERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM
COOLANT RUNNING LOW,STARTED MY TRUCK AND IT STARTED KNOCKING VERY LOUD,AND THE ENGINE LOCKED UP ALMOST INSTANTLY,HAD TO HAVE ENGINE REBUILT AND NOW IT IS KNOCKING AGAIN. *NM
FORD F-150 COMPLAINT ON 4.2L /V6 ENGINE. ENGINE HAD TOTAL FAILURE AT 69K DUE TO ENGINE COOLANT LEAK INTO MOTOR. I NEVER RECEIVED ANY RECALL NOTICES FOR GASKET PROBLEM NOTED IN OWNER NOTIFICATION BULLETINS AND TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS ISSUED BY FORD. THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM DUE TO POORLY ENGINEERED FAULTY PARTS USED BY FORD IN THIS MOTOR. THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM AND ALL V6 F-150 OWNERS SHOULD BE COMPENSATED FOR DAMAGES BY FORD. I NEED TO PAY FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS TO REPLACE THE ENGINE. *JB
LIKE JB, WHO FILED AN EARLIER COMPLAINT MY 1997 FORD F-150 ALSO SPONTANEOUSLY BURST INTO FLAMES FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AFTER HAVING BEEN PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY FOR ABOUT 10 HOURS OVER NIGHT. THE ENGINE HAD NOT BEEN RUN, WAS NOT HOT, AND HAD NO MALFUNCTIONING PARTS TO MY KNOWLEDGE. I WAS AWAKENED BY THE SOUND OF MY TRUCK'S HORN. THE FIRE BURNED THE ENGINE COMPLETELY, DESTROYED THE HOOD, CAB, AND THE ENTIRE OF THE FRONT END OF THE TRUCK BEFORE IT COULD BE PUT OUT BY THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. THE FIRE MARSHAL INDICATED THAT THERE WAS NO SIGN OF MALICIOUS INTENT OR VANDALISM. ACCORDING TO THE FIRE MARSHAL, THE FIRE ORIGINATED IN THE ELECTRICAL RELAY JUNCTION BOX LOCATED OVER THE DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT TIRE. *AK
AFTER STARTING THE VEHICLE, THE ENGINE BLEW OUT. *AK THE DEALER REPLACED THE ENGINE. FORD WOULD NOT PAY RESTITUTION FOR THE ENGINE. THE CONSUMER HAD BEEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE AND THE PARKED IT. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED LATER ON, IT EXPLODED. THE MANIFOLD WAS DEFECTIVE. *SC *JB

INSPECTION ,DUE TO A FALSE READING ON COMPUTER THAT YOUR STATIONS USE ITS COST ME $350.00 SO FAR EVERYTHING SAFETY WISE WORKS PASSES EXCEPT A EMISSION READING , ALL SAFETY THING S PASS . THE TRUCK DON'T SMOKE RUNS GOOD EXCEPT THIS STUPID EMISSION THING THAT READS NOT READY. IT SAYS GO 60 MPH LET COST, THEN SPEED IT UP , NOW YOU KNOW 60 MPH IS PRETTY FAST FOR A TRUCK. I'M A CDL LICENSE HOLDER , AND I'M SRY I'M NOT GOING TO SPEED ON THE RDS IN MY AREA. I'M CERTIFIED TRUCK DRIVER BY THE NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION , WHO EVER CAME UP WITH THIS SHOULD USE THERE OWN CAR FOR WORK AND SEE THE PRICE WE HAVE TO PAY AS A MAINTENANCE WORKER FOR NEW YORK, NEW YORK MADE THIS LAW NOW TELL ME WHAT TO DO IT S BEEN TO SERVICE STATIONS ,DEALERS , AND THEY CANT FIND THE PROBLEM, PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS SINCE YOU MADE THE LAW. *NM
I OWN A 1997 FORD F150. I RECENTLY HAD TO REPLACE THE ENGINE. I REPLACED IT WITH AN ENGINE FROM A 2000 MODEL. ONE YEAR LATER I'M HAVEING THE SAME ISSUES WITH THE NEW ENGINE. WHILE RESOVLING THE PROBLEMS I WAS HAVING I LEARNED SEVERAL PEOPLE HAD THIS SAME ISSUE. IT SEEMS THAT TSB #99-20-7 WAS ISSUED BY FORD. IT DESCRIBES MY PROBLEMS IN DETAIL. I CAUGHT IT MUCH EARLIER THIS TIME AND WAS ABLE TO REPLACE THE LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET BEFORE ANY SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE WAS DONE TO MY 2000 ENGINE. FORD NEEDS TO TAKE RESONSIBILITY AND FIX THE ISSUES RELATED TO THEIR TSB #99-20-7. ONE OF THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS IS THE INFORMATION REGARDING THIS ISSUE IS NOT WIDE SPREAD. THE ISSUE IS OFTEN MIS-DIAGNOSED AS A BLOWN HEAD GASKET, WHICH IS TWICE THE COST TO FIX. SO CONSUMERS ARE PAYING THE PRICE FOR FORDS COVER-UP. UPON LEAVING THE VEHICLE CONSUMER SMELLED A STRONG COOLANT ODOR. CONSUMER EXAMINED THE VEHICLE TO TRACE FROM WHERE THE ODOR WAS COMING. CONSUMER, WHO WAS A MECHANIC, DETERMINED THAT ENGINE HEAD GASKET BLEW OUT. DEALER WAS NOTIFIED, BUT REFUSED TO REPAIR VEHICLE WITHOUT A RECALL OR PAYMENT.*AK

I HAVE A 1997 FORD F150 WITH 55000 MILES. ON THE HIGHWAY GOING 60 MPH I HEARD A LOAD POP THE TRUCK THEN BEGAN POPPING AND MAKING ALOT OF NOISE. LOST POWER IMEDIATELY WAS ABLE TO GET TO SIDE OF THE ROAD. HAD THE TRUCK TOWED TO DEALER WHICH FOUND THE SPARKPLUG BLOWN OUT AND REPLACED THE CYL HEAD AND NUMEROUS OTHER PARTS TO THE TUNE OF $4000.OO. AFTER SEARCHING THE FORUMS ON THE INTERNET I FOUND THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED INSIDENT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO MANY DIFFERENT VEHICLES WITH THE 5.4 ENGINE. I CALLED FORD TO SEE IF THEY ARE PLANNING TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT THIS OBVIOUS ENGINE DEFECT AND THEY WERE UNINTERESTED IN MY PROBLEM. I HAVE OWNED A FEW VEHICLES AND MOST I HAVE KEPT TILL WELL PAST 100,000 MILES AND HAVE NEVER HAD A SPARKPLUG BLOW OUT OF THE CYLINDER HEAD.*AK

UNDER HOOD FIRE AFTER VEHICLE PARKED FOR 6.5 HOURS. CRUISE CONTROL STOPPED WORKING ON 11/27/03 AND WAS NOT REPAIRED.
LOWER INTALKE MANIFOLD LEAK ON 1997 F-150 4.2L CAUSED ME TO HAVE TO SPEMD 3000.00 ON A NEW MOTOR.*AK
BREAK FAILURE FORD 1997 F150 VIN. [XXX]. THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN PARKED FOR ABOUT 45 MIN. BEFORE STARTING OUT, I DROVE TO A STOP SIGN (ABOUT 200 FT) WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED (10-15 MPH) NOTHING HAPPENED, I USED BOOTH FEET ON THE PETAL AND APPLIED ALL THE FORCE I COULD TO SLOW DOWN AND IT TOOK ABOUT 75 FT TO STOP. I WENT TO A SIDE STREET AND PARKED WITH ENGINE OFF, CHECKED THE BREAK FLUID IT WAS FULL. TOOK TRUCK TO NEAREST REPAIR SHOP FOR CHECK OUT. TRUCK WAS PARKED FOR ABOUT 10 MIN. WITH ENGINE OFF WHEN MECHANIC STARTED IT AND TESTED BRAKES THEY WERE WORKING AT THAT TIME (ABS LIGHT WAS ON). TOOK TRUCK TO FORD DEALER IN OSCODA MICHIGAN ( ZUBEK AUTO SALES 511 STATE ST, OSCODA MI. 989-739-3261) AFTER CHECKING IT OUT THEY FOUND A BAD ABS SENSOR, THEY DID NOT HAVE ANY IDEA WHY I HAD NO BRAKES. BUT THEY HAD ANOTHER F150 IN THEIR SHOP THAT HAD A COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE THAT THEY COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM, THEY HAVE HAD TECHNICIANS FROM FORD (DETROIT) LOOK AT THE TRUCK AND THEY DONT KNOW WHAT IS WRONG. WHILE DRIVING DOWN AN ICY HILL, THE THROTTLE BECAME STUCK. THE DRIVER HAD TO SHUT OFF THE ENGINE TO STOP THE THROTTLE FROM STICKING. DRIVER LOST POWER BRAKES AND STEERING, BUT WAS ABLE TO COME TO A SAFE STOP. *AK *JB

FRONT ENGINE GASKET LEAKING CALLED DEALERSHIP ANY TELL ME THAT MY TRUCK WASNT A RECALL . BUT SEEMS TO ME THAT OTHER FORD TRUCK OWNERS ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WHIT THE FRONT ENGINE GASKET LEAKING. DT:THE CONTACT STATED THE MIDDLE LEAF SPRING BROKE IN THE REAR OF HER VEHICLE. THE FIRST TIME IT BROKE WAS ON THE LEFT SIDE, IT PUNCTURED A TIRE. THE TIRE WENT FLAT WHILE THE TRUCK WAS SITTING. THE LEAF SPRING WAS REPAIRED AT THIS TIME BY A CERTIFIED MECHANIC. THE SECOND TIME WAS THE RIGHT SIDE LEAF SPRING; WHILE DRIVING SHE HEARD A CLUNKING SOUND, STOPPED THE VEHICLE TO INSPECT THE NOISE, AND NOTICED THE LEAF SPRING H BROKE. IT WAS REPAIRED BY CERTIFIED MECHANIC. CONTACTED FORD , THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE LEAF SPRINGS, BUT DID NOT INCLUDE THIS VEHICLE DUE TO VIN. *AK
OUR '97 FORD F150 SPONTANEOUSLY CAUGHT FIRE AFTER MY HUSBAND RETURNED HOME FROM WORK. HE HAD BEEN HOME APPROXIMATELY 30 - 45 MINUTES WHEN THERE WAS A LOUD KNOCK ON OUR APARTMENT DOOR. WHEN I LOOKED OUT THE WINDOW, I SAW A HUGE FIRE AT THE BASE OF THE STAIRS. I TOLD MY HUSBAND AND HE GRABBED OUR DAUGHTER AND LEFT THE APARTMENT. I CALLED 911 TO REPORT THE FIRE AND I LEFT THE APARTMENT AS WELL. WHILE WAITING FOR THE FIRE DEPT., THERE WERE OTHER BURSTS OF FIRE WHILE THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WAS IN CONTINUOUS BLAZE. THE FIRE DEPT. DETERMINED THE FIRE WAS ELECTRICAL IN NATURE. *NM
WHILE DRIVING THROTTLE STUCK, AND VEHICLE STARTED TO ACCELERATE AT A HIGH RATE. CONSUMER DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL NUMEROUS TIMES TO DECELERATE THE VEHICLE, BUT IT WAS OF NO AVAIL. DEALERSHIP WAS NOTIFIED, BUT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. *AK

1997 FORD F150 W/ 4.2L ENGINE. THE GASKETS FAILED AND COOLANT LEAKED INTO THE ENGINE CAUSING A BLOWN ENGINE. RECALL FOR FRONT COVER GASKET WAS COMPLETED AND I STILL HAD THE ENGINE FAILURE. TERRIBLE. 5000 DOLLARS FOR A REPLACEMENT ENGINE. *CB
GAS PEDAL GOT STUCK, CAUSING SUDDEN ACCELERATION. CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, AND PULLED OVER TO THE SHOULDER. CONSUMER HAD VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR ANALYSIS, AND THE MECHANIC REPLACED THE SPEED SENSOR.*AK
VEHICLE'S ENGINE HAS SEVERE MOTOR DAMAGE.*MR WHILE DRIVING, THE ENGINE BEGAN TO MAKE A TICKING SOUND WHICH DEVELOPED INTO A LOUD KNOCKING NOISE. THE GAUGES SHOWED A RAPID LOST OF OIL AND A RISING TEMPERATURE, BUT NOT TO A CRITICAL LEVEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE DAMAGE WAS CAUSED BY A BROKEN PISTON ROD THAT HAD EXITED THE MOTOR THROUGH THE OIL PAN. *JB
WHILE DRIVING THROTTLE STUCK. THIS CAUSED THE CONSUMER TO DRIVE INTO A DITCH. DEALERSHIP WAS NOTIFIED, BUT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. *AK

RECENTLY MY 1997 FORD 150 4.2L STARTED CLATTER.. FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND FROM CONVERSATIONS WITH OTHER 4.2L EFI OWNERS FROM 1997-2001 THIS PARTICULAR ENGINE HAS A SIGNIFICANT PROBLEM OF SORTS.. I WAS WANDER IF THERE ARE ANY OTHER SPECIFIC COMPLAINTS? IT IS GOING TO COST ME BETWEEN 4,000 AND 5,000 TO REPLACE THE ENGINE.. WHILE MY TRUCK HAD A BIT OVER 100,000 MILES I'VE MET AND SPOKE WITH SEVERAL OWNERS WHO HAVE HAD SIGNIFICANTLY LESS MILEAGE WITH IDENTICAL PROBLEMS. I'VE MAINTAINED THE TRUCK WITHIN FACTORY SPECIFICATIONS.. DURING THE NORMAL COURSE OF EVENT, IS WAS USING 1QUART OF OIL PER 2,000 MILES WHICH SEEMED A BIT DISTRESSING. ARE THERE ANY PENDING CLASS ACTIONS AGAINST FORD MOTOR FOR THIS PARTICULAR CONDITION AND IF SO WHERE CAN I BE INFORMED OF THE PROCESS? *LA

I STARTED UP MY 1997 FORD F-150 XL WITH A 4.2L V-6 AFTER WORK ONE DAY TO HEAR A LOUD KNOCKING. I OBSERVED THAT MY COOLANT LEVEL WAS LOW HOWEVER THERE WAS NO MILKY LOOK TO THE ENGINE OIL. I RAN A COMPRESSION TEST ON MY ENGINE TO FIND THAT THERE WAS NO COMPRESSION ON CYLINDER 1 INDICATING THE CONNECTING ROD HAD BROKEN. I AM AWARE THAT FORD HAS ISSUED A TSB FOR A GASKET FAILURE HOWEVER IT HAS EXPIRED. *CB
VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN THE OWNER'S DRIVEWAY ALONG WITH 2 OTHER VEHICLES WHICH WERE BURNED ALONG WITH THE F-150 WHICH WAS ENGULFED BY FIRE. VEHICLE WAS PARKED FOR OVER 5 HOURS BEFORE THE SHERIFF DEPARTMENT WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FIRE. *AK
DRIVING VEHICLE IT HARD SHIFTS FROM 1 - 2 AND SOMETIMES FROM 2 - 3 AT SPEED LESS THAN 30 MPH AND WHEN DOWN SHIFTING FROM 2 - 1, BROUGHT VEHICLE TO DICK PARKER FORD DEALER AND HAD TRANSMISSION FLUSHED ON RECOMENDATIONS. THIS DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. BROUGHT VEHICLE BACK AND ASKED FOR IT TO BE REPAIRED AT MY COST. WAS TOLD THAT PROBLEM I STATED WAS NOT WHAT THE MECHANIC WAS LOOKING FOR. RESTATED THE PROBLEM AND TOOK THE MECHANIC FOR A TEST RIDE WHERE HE ACKNOWLEDGED THERE WAS A HARD SHIFT. LEFT VEHICLE WITH MECHANIC TO BE REPAIRED. NEXT DAY I WAS TOLD NO DIAGNOSTICS ERROR CODES WERE FOUND AND THAT I THE OWNER SHOULD CONTINUE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE AND THAT THE PROBLEM WOULD GO AWAY. (HAVE DEALER DOCUMENTATION STATING THIS). *AK
WHILE IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC ALL 4 TRUCK WHEELS SUDDENLY LOCKED UP WHICH CAUSED THE TRUCK TO COME TO AN ABRUPT STOP. THE DEALERSHIP IS CURRENTLY SERVICING THE TRUCK TO LOCATE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. *NLM THE DEALER REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION WITH A REMANUFACTURED ONE. *NM
DURING AN OIL CHANGE MECHANIC INFORMED THE CONSUMER THAT LOWER BALL JOINTS WERE SEVERELY WORN. DEALER WAS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. *AK
WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED FOR 1 HOUR A FIRE STARTED UNDER THE HOOD. THE DEALERSHIP WAS NOTIFIED, BUT DID NOT OFFER ASSISTANCE. *AK *JB
WHILE TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL BINDS AND MAKES A GRINDING NOISE. THE CONSUMER HAS TO USE EXCESSIVE EFFORT TO STRAIGHTEN THE WHEEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR ANALYSIS BUT THE TECHNICIAN COULD NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. *AK THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN REPORTED TO THE MANUFACTURER BUT THEY REFUSED TO PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE. *NM

WHILE COMING TO A STOP THE THROTTLE BECAME STUCK AND CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO RUN INTO A DITCH. THE DEALERSHIP HAS BEEN NOTIFIED BUT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. *NM
