SAME AREA THAT IS REFERENCED IN FORD TSB NUMBER 996754 SEQUENCE NUMBER 845, DATED 9908. NHTSA ITEM NUMBER SB608461. FORD DEALER SAYS THEY ARE UNAWARE OF ANY PROBLEMS IN THIS AREA, YET IN LOOKING AT THEIR USED TRUCKS, 1997 THRU 2001 ALL TRUCKS HAVE CRACKS IN DRIVERS DOOR AND MOST IN PASSENGER DOORS. *AK
LEFT REAR TIRE FAILURE AT A SPEED OF 65MPH. VERY LITTLE TRAFFIC ON ROAD. THE TREAD COMPLETELY SEPARATED FROM THE LEFT REAR TIRE. TRUCK VEERED INTO THE LEFT LANE OF A 4 LANE HIGHWAY. TIRE DID NOT BLOW. TRUCK WAS BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL AND LEFT REAR TIRE WAS CHANGED. UNABLE TO PUT FUEL IN TRUCK DUE TO FUEL LINE BEING TORN OUT OF PLACE AND DANGLING FROM UNDERNEATH THE TRUCK. I NOTICED THE PAINT CRACKING AND WENT TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP. THEY SENT ME TO THE WARRENTY PAINT SHOP, WHICH DETEDTED THE THICKNESS OF PAINT. THE TRUCK HAS NEVER BEEN PAINTED BY ME, THE ORIGINAL OWNER. THE PAINT SHOP ALSO TOLD ME, AND SHOWED ME THE CRACK IN THE DOOR. THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP SAID THEY COULD DO NOTHING FOR ME, BUT CINTACT THE REGIONAL FORD REP. SHE SAID FORD WILL ONLY PAY % 20 OF THE $4450 COST FOR THE PAINT AND DOOR. I FEEL THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS, SINCE I HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE DAMAGE AND POOR QUALITY. THE FORD NATIONAL "CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP" CENTER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED AND KEPT ABREAST OF THE SITUATION. THEY SAY TODAY THAT THE REGIONAL REP HAS THE FINAL SAY. IF THIS IS A DEFECT FROM THE FACTORY, AND BECAUSE I TOOK GOOD CARE OF THE TRUCK SO THE DEFECTS DIDN'T SHOW UP UNTIL 61,000. WHY SHOULD I PAY? COMPLETE TREAD SEPARATION WHILE DRIVING BETWEEN 55-60MPH. TRUCK VEERED ACROSS ROAD ONTO SHOULDER. DAMAGE ESTIMATES TO TRUCK BETWEEN $2,000-2,500. THE ONLY REASON THIS DID NOT RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT WAS THERE WAS LITTLE TRAFFIC AT THE TIME. THIS TREAD SEPARATION APPEARS IDENTICAL TO THOSE OF FIRESTONE TIRES. GENERAL TIRE DEALER IS MCKNIGHT TIRE IN JEFFERSON CITY, MO., THEY WOULD ONLY PROVIDE THE PHONE NUMBER FOR GENERAL TIRE. KEHOE FORD IN JEFFERSON CITY DENIED ANY KNOWLEDGE OF PROBLEMS WITH GENERAL TIRE. FIRESTONE WAS CONTACTED, AND THEY STATED THEY HAD NO OBLIGATION TO REPLACE TIRES.*AK *JB
WHEN VEHICLE IS PUT INTO NEUTRAL IT STARTS TO REVERSE .ONLY WAY TO DRIVE IS TO PUT IT IN DRIVE. CONTACTED DEALER.*AK

NO WARNING OF BRAKE PADS GETTING LOW. I TOOK MY TRUCK TO A MECHANIC BECAUSE THE FRONT BRAKES WERE MAKING A NOISE. HE REPORTED THAT MY BRAKE PADS HAD WORN COMPLETELY AWAY AND HAD DAMAGED THE ROTORS TO THE POINT THAT THEY HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE MECHANIC SAID THAT NORMALLY BRAKE PADS CONTAINED A SQUEAKER DEVICE TO LET YOU KNOW WHEN THE PADS ARE GETTING LOW. MY FORD FACTORY INSTALLED BRAKE PADS DID NOT HAVE THIS.*AK

A CRACK IN METAL OUTSIDE DRIVER'S DOOR WHERE SEAL MEETS WINDOW. DEALER / MANUFACTURER NOTIFIED, AND INFORMED CONSUMER THAT VEHICLE WAS OUT OF ITS WARRANTY, AND THERE WERE NO RECALLS ON THAT PROBLEM. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FURTHER DETAILS ON THIS MATTER. *AK
RT FRONT TORSION BAR BROKE WHILE SITTING IN THE DRIVE WAY. *AK
I LIVE IN THE FLORIDA KEYS WHERE IT IS PRETTY WARM BUT WHERE THE MAXIMUM SPEED LIMIT IS 55MPH AND MOSTLY MUCH LESS. THERE ARE FEW HIGH SPEED (HIGHWAY) MILES ON MY TIRES. HAVING SAID THAT, I DROVE TO PORT ORANGE (DAYTONA BEACH), FLORIDA TO SEE MY FATHER WHO RECENTLY HAD SURGERY AND ON THE WAY HOME (ONLY 8 MILES INTO THE RETURN TRIP) I SUDDENLY GOT A VIBRATION IN THE RIDE. I WAS DOING THE SPEED LIMIT OF 70MPH ON THE INTERSTATE I-95. I PULLED OVER AND CHECKED MY TIRES AND DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING AND SO ASSUMED THE PROBLEM WAS THE ROAD. I THEN DROVE A SHORT DISTANCE AND CHANGED LANES BUT THE VIBRATION DIDN'T GO AWAY SO I KEPT TO A LOWER SPEED (AROUND 50) AND TOOK THE NEXT EXIT WHERE I PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT AND DID A DETAILED EXAMINATION OF MY TIRES. WHAT I FOUND WAS A RAISED AREA ON THE TREAD OF THE FRONT LEFT (DRIVER'S SIDE) TIRE. IT WAS APPROXIMATELY 12 INCHES LONG AND 2 1/2 TO 3 INCHES WIDE. IT WAS DIFFICULT TO DETECT VISUALLY BECAUSE IT WAS NOT RAISED VERY HIGH BUT WAS EASY TO DETECT BY RUNNING MY HANDS AROUND THE TREAD OF THE ENTIRE WHEEL. I CHECKED ALL OTHER TIRES AND DIDN'T NOTICE A PROBLEM SO I LOCATED (WITH THE TELEPHONIC ASSISTANCE FROM MY PARENTS) A FIRESTONE DEALER BACK IN PORT ORANGE WHERE I HAD JUST COME FROM AND DROVE THERE. AT FIRST THE GUY IN CHARGE TOLD ME I WOULD HAVE A 2 HOUR WAIT SINCE HE HAD LOTS OF PAYING CUSTOMERS IN FRONT OF ME BUT AFTER EXPLAINING (RATHER FORCEFULLY) THAT THIS WAS AN EMERGENCY PROBLEM DUE TO A DEFECTIVE PRODUCT AND THAT I HAD AN 8 HOUR DRIVE AHEAD OF ME THAT HIS PRODUCT HAD ALREADY DELAYED BY AT LEAST 1 1/2 HOURS HE FINALLY TOLD ME HE WOULD GET ME IN THE BAY IN AN HOUR. AT FIRST, HE WAS ONLY GOING TO REPLACE THE ONE TIRE. I INSISTED THEY INSPECT ALL THE TIRES AND IT WAS A GOOD THING I DID... THEY FOUND THE TREAD ON THE RIGHT FRONT WAS ALSO SEPARATING AND THAT IT WAS ALSO DANGEROUS AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED WHICH THEY DID. I WANT THE REMAINING TWO REPLACED. *AK (TIRESIZE: P235/70R16)
