TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 FORD F-150. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH, THE FUEL TANK DETACHED AND BEGAN TO DRAG ONTO THE GROUND. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE CONTACT NOTICED BOTH FUEL TANK STRAPS FRACTURED AS A RESULT OF RUST; HOWEVER THERE WAS NO FUEL LEAKING. THE FUEL TANK WAS TEMPORARILY REPAIRED WITH A STRONG ROPE. THE FAILURE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR PERMANENTLY REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE DEFECT. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 FORD F-150. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH THE CONTACT HEARD A DRAGGING SOUND FROM UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF AND NOTICED THE FUEL TANK HAD DETACHED. THE FUEL TANK WAS FRACTURED AND APPROXIMATELY EIGHTEEN GALLONS OF FUEL SPILLED ONTO THE GROUND. THE POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENT REPORTED TO THE SCENE AND A REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIANS STATED THE FUEL TANK STRAPS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO CORROSION. THE FUEL TANK AND FUEL LINES ALSO NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 FORD F-150. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH THE CONTACT DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE BRAKES DID NOT RESPOND AND THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO A VEHICLE. A REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP WHERE THE MECHANIC STATED THE BRAKE LINE WAS RUSTED. ONE OF THE FUEL TANK STRAPS WERE COVERED WITH RUST AND THE OTHER STRAP WAS BROKEN. THE BRAKE LINES WERE REPLACED. THE FUEL TANK STRAPS WERE NOT REPAIRED BECAUSE THE PART WAS NOT AVAILABLE AND HAD TO BE ORDERED. THERE WAS A NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 11V385000 ( FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:MOUNTING) THAT MAY BE RELATED TO THE FAILURE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 FORD F-150. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, THE FUEL TANK DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE AND CAUSED SPARKS WHEN IT FELL ONTO THE GROUND. THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT BOTH FUEL TANK STRAPS WERE CORRODED, AND APPROXIMATELY 10 GALLONS OF FUEL LEAKED OUT FROM A HOLE IN THE FUEL TANK. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED HOME AND WAS NOT REPAIRED. I FILLED MY FUEL TANK UP AND NOTICE A GASOLINE SMELL. DURING AN INSPECTION OF THE TANK I FOUND GAS ON THE GROUND AND THE REAR FUEL TANK STRAP RUSTED COMPLETELY THROUGH AND A HOLE IN THE TANK WHERE THE STRAP WOULD HAVE BEEN. THIS IS NOT ONLY A HEALTH HAZARD BUT A FIRE HAZARD AS WELL. *KB
I WAS DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH ON A SMOOTH, PAVED ROAD, WHEN THE TWO STRAPS THAT SUPPORT THE VEHICLE FUEL TANK BROKE, AND THE TANK FELL TO THE ROAD. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OFF THE MAIN ROAD AND INVESTIGATED. THE REAR OF THE TANK WAS STILL ATTACHED TO THE FRAME BY A PLASTIC CRADLE, BUT THE FRONT END HAD CONTACTED THE ROAD AND PLOUGHED ALONG FOR ABOUT 100 FEET. THERE WAS A DENT IN THE TANK AND SOME WEAR, BUT NO APPARENT LEAKS. THE FUEL LINES AND FILLER HOSE REMAINED INTACT AND ATTACHED. I TEMPORARILY WINCHED THE TANK UP WITH A RATCHET STRAP TO GET HOME, AND HAVE SINCE REPLACED THE FAULTY STRAPS WITH NEW ONES. *TR
OUR TRUCK, A 1998 FORD F150, LOST USE OF THE CRUISE CONTROL BACK IN APRIL OF 2011. WE BOUGHT IT USED IN 2008 AND SINCE WE DID NOT USE IT MUCH ANYWAY, WE DID NOT THINK MUCH OF IT. THEN IN LATE JUNE WE STARTED THE TRUCK AND COULD NOT GET THE GEAR SHIFTER TO MOVE. WHEN TRYING TO PULL IT INTO DRIVE, REVERSE, OR ANYTHING, IT WOULD NOT MOVE. MY HUSBAND CAME HOME FROM WORK THE NEXT MORNING AND CHANGED A FUSE AND IT WORKED FOR WEEKS. THEN I DROVE THE VEHICLE FOR APROX. 45 MINUTES ONE AFTERNOON, CAME HOME SHUT IT OFF WENT INSIDE MY HOUSE, HEAR A LOUD POP, LOOKED OUT THE DOOR AND THE TRUCK WAS ON FIRE. *TT

WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AT 65 MPH THE STRAP THAT HOLDS THE GAS TANK IN PLACE BROKE. BY THE TIME WE GOT TO A SAFE PLACE TO PULL OVER, THE GAS TANK HAD A LARGE HOLE IN IT FROM SCRAPING ON THE ROAD & 20+ GALLONS OF GASOLINE WAS RUNNING OUT BENEATH OUR VEHICLE. WE WERE EXTREMELY LUCKY THERE WAS NO FIRE. WE HAD TO PAY $240 FOR A FLATBED TO GET THE VEHICLE BACK HOME & ANOTHER $500 TO PUT ON A NEW GAS TANK & NEW STRAPS. NOT TO MENTION THE $65 IN GAS THAT POURED OUT ON THE ROAD. I THINK A WARNING FROM FORD WOULD HAVE SAVED US FROM WHAT EASILY COULD HAVE ENDED IN DISASTER.
THE BRACKETS THAT HOLD THE FUEL TANK STRAPS HAVE RUSTED ALONG WITH THE STRAPS TO THE POINT THAT THE TANK MAY FALL OFF. I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS THE SAME PROBLEM THAT CAUSED THE FAILURE OF THE STRAPS RUSTING THROUGH. THIS CAN CREATE A FIRE EVEN AFTER THE STRAPS HAVE BEEN REPLACED BECAUSE THE WHOLE STRUCTURE OF THE FUEL TANK SUPPORT SYSTEM IS FAILING. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 FORD F-150. WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH, THERE WAS A CLUNKING NOISE COMING FROM UNDER THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE DOOR. ALSO, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE FUEL GAUGE READING DROPPED TO EMPTY IN APPROXIMATELY FORTY FIVE SECONDS. THE CONTACT STOPPED THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED THAT THE ROAD THEY HAD BEEN TRAVELING WAS ON FIRE. THE CONTACT THEN DISCOVERED THAT THE FUEL TANK HAD DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE AND BOTH STRAPS WERE MISSING FROM THE FUEL TANK. THE CONTACT WAS UNAWARE OF THE CONDITIONS OF THE STRAPS AND STATED THAT APPROXIMATELY FIFTEEN GALLONS OF FUEL SPILLED OUT OF A HOLE IN THE FUEL TANK. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE MECHANIC STATED THE FUEL TANK AND THE BOTH STRAPS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. FAILURE WAS IMMEDIATE, FORD F150 FUEL TANK STRAPS. WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD APPARENTLY THE TANK STRAPS GAVE WAY AND THE FUEL TANK DROPPED. BEFORE COMING TO A STOP AND AFTER CATCHING SOME UNEVEN PAVEMENT, FUEL TANK WAS PEALED OPEN AND LOSING ABOUT 8 GALLONS GAS. FIRE DEPT WAS CALLED AND THEY CLEANED UP SPILL. BOTH STRAPS BROKE AND FUEL TANK IS UN-REPAIRABLE. UPDATED 08/05/11 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED HE EXPERIENCED OTHER PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE, SUCH AS A LEAKING POWER STEERING GEAR BOX, BRAKE LINES HAD TO BE REPLACED, THERE WAS A LEAK IN THE 4-WHEEL DRIVE GEAR BOX, THE MUFFLER HANGERS, BALL JOINTS, TIE ROD ENDS AND SHOCKS ALL HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE REVERSING AT APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH IN THE DRIVEWAY, THE FUEL TANK PARTIALLY DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE AND BEGAN TO DRAG ONTO THE GROUND. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 FORD F150. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 15 MPH BOTH STRAPS THAT HOLDS THE FUEL TANK IN PLACE BROKE CAUSING IT TO FALL ONTO THE GROUND. WHEN THE FUEL TANK FELL ON THE GROUND ALL OF THE GASOLINE SPILLED OUT BECAUSE OF A HOLE IN THE FUEL TANK. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED IN ORDER TO CLEAN THE FUEL SPILLAGE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE RESIDENCE AND WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THERE WERE NO RECALLS; HOWEVER, THERE WAS AN INVESTIGATION RELATED TO THE FAILURE AND OFFERED NO ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 152,000.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 FORD F150. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH, THE CONTACT HEARD A LOUD CLUNKING NOISE OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE AND MANEUVERED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. HE THEN NOTICED THAT THE FUEL TANK WAS PARTIALLY DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE WITH BOTH FUEL TANK STRAPS COMPLETELY CORRODED FROM RUST. IN ADDITION, AN ESTIMATED AMOUNT OF TEN GALLONS OF FUEL SPILLED ONTO THE GROUND. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSIS WHO ADVISED THAT THERE WAS AN OPEN INVESTIGATION ASSOCIATED WITH THE FAILURE UNDER NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: EA11006 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE: STORAGE: TANK ASSEMBLY: MOUNTING). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT WAS IN THE PROCESS OF NOTIFYING THE MANUFACTURER REGARDING THE DEFECT. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
DRIVING 1998 FORD F-150 4 X 4 TRUCK ON DRY, FLAT, SMOOTH ASPHALT SURFACE ROAD AT 45 MPH WHEN I NOTICED A LOUD METALLIC SOUND. PULLED OFF ROAD IMMEDIATELY AND NOTICED STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE. LOOKED UNDER VEHICLE AND OBSERVED FRONT END OF GAS TANK WAS ON THE GROUND, LEAKING GAS PROFUSELY. TURNED OFF ENGINE AND IMMEDIATELY CALLED 9-1-1 BECAUSE OF FIRE POTENTIAL. FIRE, EMS, AND LOCAL SHERIFF RESPONDED. FRONT GAS TANK MOUNTING STRAP FAILED, CAUSING TANK TO LAND ON PAVEMENT, RUPTURING FUEL TANK WITH RESULTANT GASOLINE SPILL, CONTAINED BY FIRE DEPARTMENT. GAS TANK REMOVED BY FIRE DEPARTMENT, TRUCK TOWED FOR REPAIRS, APPROXIMATED AT $1,500.00 TO REPLACE DAMAGED FUEL TANK, FUEL PUMP, AND MOUNTING STRAPS. FIRE DEPARTMENT REPORTED TO ME THAT SEVERAL OCCURRENCES WITH FORD F-150 FUEL TANK MOUNTING STRAP FAILURES HAVE BEEN REPORTED. UPDATED 09/14/11 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED WHEN THE FUEL TANK FELL TO THE GROUND, FUEL BEGAN LEAKING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 FORD F-150. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH, THE CONTACT HEARD A LOUD BANGING NOISE OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT MANEUVERED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND NOTICED THE FUEL TANK WAS PARTIALLY DETACHED AND DRAGGING ON THE GROUND. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO STATED BOTH FUEL TANK STRAPS WERE CORRODED DUE TO RUST. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. ON MY WAY TO WORK, THE FUEL TANK STRAPS OF OUR 1998 FORD F150 RUSTED THROUGH AND THE TANK FELL. LUCKILY IT DID NOT HAPPEN ON THE INTERSTATE, BUT WHILE WAITING FOR THE STOPLIGHT ON THE OFF RAMP. I PULLED INTO THE PARKING LOT WITH THE TANK HANGING AND PARKED IT. TO GET IT HOME, WE USED TOW STRAPS TO PUT THE TANK BACK IN PLACE AND DROVE SLOWLY WITH HAZARD LIGHTS HOME. WE ARE CURRENTLY DECIDING WHETHER TO FIX IT OURSELVES OR PARK IT. *TT

LEFT REAR SPRING HANGER BROKE AND CAME LOSE FROM FRAME AND WENT UP HITTING THE TRUCK BED UNDERSIDE. THIS PART HOLDS THE REAR END IN PLACE
WHILE BRAKING TO TURN, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND I WAS UNABLE TO STOP. LUCKILY I WAS ALREADY SLOWING FOR THE TURN AND WAS ABLE TO DOWNSHIFT TO SLOW ENOUGH FOR THE TURN. MECHANIC SAID THE BRAKE LINE WAS RUSTED THROUGH. WITH THE RECENT RECALL OF RUSTED GAS TANK STRAPS ON THIS VEHICLE, BELIEVE A RECALL ON RUSTED BRAKE LINES IS ALSO WARRANTED. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A FATAL ACCIDENT UNDER DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES, I.E., TRYING TO STOP AT A TRAIN TRACK, PULLING A TRAILER, OR GOING FASTER. *KB

STRAPS ON GAS TANK BROKE, DROPPED FRONT OF GAS TANK ON ROAD WHILE WE WERE DRIVING.
