OUR 1998 FORD F-150'S GAS TANK FELL OFF THE TRUCK IN OUR DRIVEWAY. THE LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED AND THEY ADVISED US THAT THE REAR STRAP COMPLETELY DETERIORATED. THEY WERE ABLE TO CUT THE FRONT STRAP WITH MINIMAL EFFORT AS IT WAS DETERIORATED AS WELL. WE WERE VERY FORTUNATE IT DID NOT FALL WHEN IN THE TRUCK WAS IN MOTION. *TR
REAR GAS TANK STRAP RUSTED THROUGH. I REPLACED IT IMMEDIATELY. THE GAS TANK WOULD HAVE DROPPED IF I HAD NOT CAUGHT THIS DEFECT WHEN I DID. DEFECTIVE PART REPLACEMENT DATE WAS MARCH 28, 2011. $31.00 WAS THE COST OF THE PART PLUS LABOR.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 FORD F-150. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FUEL TANK STRAPS FRACTURED AND THE FUEL TANK DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE STRAPS WERE CORRODED AND AS A RESULT OF THE FAILURE THE FUEL TANK, FUEL PUMP AND STRAPS NEEDED TO BE REPLACE. AS I WAS LOOKING UNDER MY TRUCK PREPARING TO TOE A VEHICLE, I NOTICED ONE OF MY FUEL TANK STRAPS WAS COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH AND HANGING LOOSE. BASICALLY MY TANK WAS BEING HELD BY ONLY ONE OF THE STRAPS. I DID THIS VISUAL CHECK AFTER HEARING ABOUT POSSIBLE PROBLEMS ON A TELEVISION NEWS BROADCAST. A PHONE CALL TO THE DEALER RESULTED IN NOTHING.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 FORD F-150. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FUEL TANK FRACTURED FROM THE VEHICLE AS A RESULT OF THE BRACKET BEING CORRODED. NEITHER THE DEALER NOR THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED TO REPORT THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 140,000.
GAS TANK STRAP RUSTED AWAY; NOTICED IT IN MY DRIVEWAY; NO DAMAGE, BUT POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS
WAS DRIVING MY 1998 FORD F-150 AND OVER HEARD A SCRAPING NOISE. I HAD JUST HAD THE DRUMS ON MY TRUCK SERVICED AND THOUGHT ONE OF THEM MAY HAVE SEIZED SO I PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT ONLY TO FIND 2 OF THE STRAPS SUPPORTING THE GAS TANK BROKE OFF DISPOSING A FULL GAS TANK OVER A CHURCH PARKING LOT AND DOWN A STRETCH OF ROAD. I HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED BY MY INSURER THAT A CLAIM OF ALMOST 10000 DOLLARS HAS BEEN SUBMITTED FROM THE CITY FOR CLEAN UP AND THE CHURCH TO RE-PAVE THE DRIVEWAY THEREFORE UPPING MY INSURANCE ALMOST 400$ A YEAR AND STAINING MY RECORD FOR UP TO 6 YEARS! THIS IS COMPLETELY UNFAIR THAT FORD CAN GET AWAY WITH MAKING SUCH A SHODDY PRODUCT AND I CANT HELP BUT FEEL THAT THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS INCIDENT AND THAT I SHOULD BE AT NO FAULT. FUEL TANK STRAPS RUSTED OUT AND FUEL TANK FELL ON GROUND WHILE I WAS DRIVING. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 FORD F-150. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 10 MPH WHEN THE FRONT STRAPS FRACTURED FROM THE FUEL TANK. THE CONTACT SECURED THE FUEL TANK TO THE VEHICLE WITH ROPE AND DROVE THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE FUEL TANK CAUSED A BRAKE LINE TO FRACTURE AS WELL. THE MECHANIC REPAIRED THE TWO FRONT STRAPS TO THE FUEL TANK AND THE BRAKE LINE. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED THAT THE FAILURE COULD HAVE CAUSED A CRASH AND EVEN A FIRE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 FORD F-150. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN SITTING IDLE FOR APPROXIMATELY EIGHT HOURS WHEN IT CAUGHT ON FIRE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT INVESTIGATED AND CONCLUDED THAT THE FIRE WAS CAUSED BY A FAULTY WIRING HARNESS. A FIRE REPORT WAS AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS NO WARNING OR ANY TYPE OF BURNING ODOR FROM THE VEHICLE PRIOR TO THE FIRE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THE FAILURE UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 05V388000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL) DUE TO THE CRUISE CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH FAILING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT BEEN INSPECTED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE CONTACT DID NOT CONFIRM IF THE RECALL PERTAINED TO HER SPECIFIC VIN. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 117,000.

THE SUPPORT STRAPS HOLDING THE GASOLINE TANK OF MY FORD F-150 TRUCK RUSTED AWAY LEAVING THE GAS TANK UNSUPPORTED. THE TRUCK CAN NOT BE DRIVEN UNTIL THE STRAPS ARE REPLACED. REAR GAS TANK STRAP RUSTED THROUGH LEAVING TANK HANGING. *TR
BOTH STRAPS, WHICH HOLDS THE GAS TANK, RUSTED THROUGH AND BROKE LOOSE WHILE DRIVING AT LOW SPEED AND TRAVELED OVER MINOR POTHOLE. ENTIRE TANK FELL TO THE CEMENT. FUEL LINE DID NOT BREAK AWAY.
WAS AT GAS PUMP GETTING GAS, WHEN GAS STARTED TO POUR OUT OF TANK BY FILLER TUBE. TOOK TO REPAIR SHOP AND WAS TOLD GAS STRAP WAS ROTTED AWAY HAD TO REPLACE BOTH GAS STRAPS AND TANK. BECAUSE IT BROKE OFF TANK BY FILLER TUBE.
NOTICED POOR FUEL ECONOMY AND ABOUT A MONTH LATER NOTICED THE SMELL OF GAS BUT NOT CONSTANT, ONLY AFTER GAS FILL-UP. LOOKED FOR ISSUES BUT DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING OBVIOUS WHEN UNDER THE VEHICLE WITH A LIGHT. WHILE PARKED IN A GARAGE, FOUND A DRIP AND NOTICED THAT IT SMELLED AS IF IT WAS GAS. LOOKED THE TRUCK OVER AGAIN AND FOUND THAT THE STRAPS HOLDING THE GAS TANK IN HAD RUSTED BADLY AND CAUSED THE TANK TO RUST AND LEAK. WHY IS THERE NOT INSULATING RUBBER BETWEEN THE TANK AND THE STRAPS LIKE OTHER MANUFACTURES HAVE WHICH WOULD PREVENT THIS DANGEROUS EVENT FROM HAPPENING? PURCHASING NEW STRAPS AND A NEW GAS TANK TO FIX THE PROBLEM. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL MECHANIC SHOP WHERE THE LOCAL MECHANIC REPLACED THE DEFECTIVE FUEL TANK. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 121,000. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 FORD F-150. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED THE CONTACT INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED ONE OF THE FUEL TANK STRAPS HAD BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FUEL TANK. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. TL. THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 FORD F-150. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH THE CONTACT HEARD A LOUD BANG AND THEN THE SOUND OF SOMETHING DRAGGING. THE CONTACT PULLED OVER AND NOTICE THE FUEL TANK FEEL OFF FROM THE BRACKETS AND CAUSING FUEL TO LEAK. THIS OCCURRED DUE TO RUST ACCUMULATING ON THE BRACKETS. THE CONTACT HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A LOCAL MECHANIC. THE MECHANIC REPLACED THE BRACKETS AND THE FUEL TANK. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER REGARDING THE FUEL TANK AND THE MANUFACTURER STATED THERE ARE NO REPORTS OF THE FUEL TANK FALLING OFF THE VEHICLE AND SINCE THE VEHICLE HAS HIGH MILEAGE THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. THE CONTACT STATED THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE THAT COULD HAVE STARTED A FIRE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 166,000. JO

OF GAS AND SPARKS WERE FLYING LIKE CRAZY AND I STARTED TO SLOW DOWN AND PULL OFF TO THE SIDE OF ROAD AND I JUMPED OUT OF TRUCK AND RAN FROM IT NOT KNOWING WHAT WOULD HAPPEN NEXT......6 WEEKS EARLIER THE UNIVERSAL JOINTS HAD BEEN CHANGED AND ALL LOOKED FINE., NEW(NOT USED) GAS TANK AND STRAPS AND NEW GAS LINE WERE ALL REPLACED ....... *TR

I OWN A 1998 FORD 150 PICKUP AND THE GAS TANK STRAPS HAVE RUSTED THROUGH AND IT IS DANGEROUS. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THERE IS A RECALL FROM FORD BUT WHEN I TOOK MY TRUCK TO THE FORD DEALER I WAS TOLD THAT IF A RECALL WAS ON THE NEWS THAT IT MANY BE A YEAR BEFORE THE RECALL LETTERS ARE MAILED. NOTICED FUEL TANK HANGING LOW, STRAPS HAD RUSTED AND TANK BROKE FREE AND DROPPED DOWN.
GAS TANK DROPPED ONTO ROADWAY SPILLING FUEL. F150 PICKUP 1998 WITH V6 ENGINE & FULL LENGTH BED. CORROSION OF THE FORWARD TANK STRAP RESULTED IN A FAILURE THAT COULD HAVE BEEN VERY SERIOUS WITH FUEL DUMPING INTO ROADWAY. *TR UPDATED 08/01/11 *BF THE FORWARD STRAP BROKE, ALLOWING THE FRONT OF THE TANK TO GRIND INTO THE PAVEMENT. THE FORMED END OF THE REAR STRAP PULLED OUT OF THE FRAME WELL. THE TANK STAYED WITH THE VEHICLE AS THE CONSUMER PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, BUT ONLY THE HOSES AND HAVING THE REAR OF THE TANK JAMMED AGAINST THE FRAME KEPT IT WITH THE VEHICLE. THE TANK WAS ABOUT 3/4 FULL ABOUT 22 GALLONS LEAKED ONTO THE ROADWAY. UPDATED 08/02/11
1998 FORD F-150; SIMPLY WAS DRIVING AND THE SPARE TIRE HOIST CABLE BROKE DROPPING THE SPARE. CABLE BROKE AT POINT WHERE LUG AND CABLE COME TOGETHER AT THE LUG THAT HOLDS THE BRACKET UNDERNEATH THE SPARE TIRE. NO OBVIOUS CORROSION NOTED AT THIS LOCATION OR ON THE REMAINDER OF THE CABLE. *TR

WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH, THE CONTACT HEARD A LOUD NOISE, WHEN HE NOTICED THAT THE STRAPS HOLDING THE GASOLINE TANK WERE COVERED WITH RUST, CAUSING THE FUEL TANK TO FALL OFF OF THE VEHICLE LEAVING A WHOLE IN THE FRONT RIGHT SIDE OF THE FUEL TANK. THE DEALER WAS NOTIFIED AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WERE NO RELATED RECALLS. THE CONTACT DID NOT INFORM THE MANUFACTURER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 150,000.

THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FUEL TANK WOULD NOT BE REPAIRED UNDER THE RECALL. THE CURRENT AND THE FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 118,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP WHERE THE FUEL TANK, VENT PRESSURE SENSOR, FUEL LINE AND FUEL TANK STRAP WERE REPLACED WHICH INCLUDED REPAIRING THE WIRES. THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO CONFIRM IF THE FUEL TANK STRAP WAS CORRODED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THERE WAS AN OPEN INVESTIGATION UNDER NHTSA ACTION NUMBER EA11006 ( FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:MOUNTING FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:MOUNTING) WHICH MAY BE RELATED TO THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 135,000.

ON SUNDAY OCTOBER 24,2010 AT 7:15 AM ON MY WAY TO CHURCH , HEARD SOMETHING DRAGGING UNDER TRUCK. STOPPED TO FIND FUEL TANK HANGING FROM UNDER TRUCK BOTH STRAPS HAD RUSTED AND BROKEN. DRAGGING FUEL TANK CAUSED HOLE IN TANK WHICH WAS LEAKING INTO ROAD. LOCAL FIRE AND POLICE WERE DISPATCHED LUCKILY NO ONE WAS HURT. LOCAL HAZ-MAT COMPANY WAS ALSO CALL TO CLEAN UP FUEL SPILL. UPDATED 08/01/11 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED WHILE DRIVING, HE HEARD SOMETHING DRAGGING FROM CAR. WHEN HE LOOKED IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR, HE SAW A FIRE TRAIL BEHIND THE VEHICLE. HE STOPPED THE VEHICLE, GOT OUT AND LOOKED UNDER THE VEHICLE. HE SAW THE FUEL TANK HAD DROPPED AND THE FRONT PORTION WAS CONTACTING THE GROUND, WITH A HOLD IN THE FRONT CORNER OF THE TANK. I OWN A 1998 FORD F-150 4X4 AND I AM SEND THIS REPORT AFTER READING AN ARTICLE ONLINE THAT YOU WERE INVESTIGATING THE MOUNTING STRAP'S ONE THE FUEL TANK. I WANTED TO REPORT THAT I HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MINE. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AFTER FILLING UP MY TRUCK WHEN I STARTED SMELLING GAS FUMES, I PULLED OVER AND UPON INSPECTION I FOUND MY FUEL TANK WAS ALMOST ON THE GROUND THE REAR STRAP HAD BROKE DUE TO RUST. I HAD LEAKED RAW FUEL FOR ABOUT 6 MILES AND HAD LOST ABOUT 1/4 OF A TANK. THE TANK FALLING RESULTED IN THE TANK PULLING AWAY FROM THE FILLING NECK AT THE TANK CONNECTION AND STRESSED THE FUEL LINE CONNECTIONS. I HAVE SINCE FIXED THE PROBLEM AT THE COST OF $45.61. I RECENTLY READ ABOUT STRAPS SUPPORTING GAS TANK ON MY TYPE VEHICLE RUSTING OUT. I CHECKED MY VEHICLE AND FOUND ONE OF THE STRAPS SUPPORTING THE GAS TANK HAD RUSTED OUT AND HAS BROKEN LOOSE. IT IS PRESENTLY IN THE PROCESS OF BEING REPAIRED. *TR
MY 1998 FORD F-150 STARTED ACTING UP WHEN THE CRUISE CONTROL BUTTONS WERE SET ON. THE CAR WOULD HESITATE AND NOT WANT TO PULL. ONCE WE GOT HOME WE TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF AND DID NOT THINK ANYTHING MORE ABOUT IT. THE FOLLOWING DAY WE WENT FOR A DRIVE AND NOTICED WHAT WE THOUGHT WAS STEAM COMING FROM UNDERNEATH THE HOOD. I PULLED THE VEHICLE OVER AND LIFTED THE HOOD TO INSPECT IT. WHEN I LIFTED THE HOOD I WAS ENGULFED IN FLASH FLAMES. I IMMEDIATELY DROPPED TO THE GROUND TO PUT OUT THE FLAMES. WHEN MY FRIEND HELPED ME OFF THE GROUND THE TRUCK WAS ON FIRE UNDER THE HOOD. WE IMMEDIATELY CALLED FOR MEDICAL ASSISTANCE AND WAS TRANSPORTED TO HOSPITAL VIA LIFE STAR HELICOPTER. I SUFFERED 1ST AND 2ND DEGREE BURNS ON MY FACE AND FOREARMS AND HANDS. I SUFFERED 3RD DEGREE BURNS ON MY RIGHT ARM AND HAD TO HAVE SURGERY TO REMOVE THE DEAD TISSUE AND THEN HAD TO HAVE SKIN GRAFTS TO FIX MY ARM. I WAS TRANSPORTED TO UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE HOSPITAL AND THE SENT IMMEDIATELY TO VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL BURN CENTER. I WAS IN VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL BURN CENTER FOR 7 DAYS. *TR
GAS TANK STRAPS BROKE FROM 1998, F-150. THE GAS TANK FELL TO THE STREET WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. I DID NOT IMMEDIATELY REALIZE THIS, BUT SAW SPARKS IN REAR VIEW MIRROR AND PULLED OVER. I HAD BEEN DRAGGING A LEAKING GAS TANK FOR SEVERAL HUNDRED YARDS. I COULD HAVE BLOWN UP. *TR
1998 FORD F-150 VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN WORK PARKING LOT FOR 6-1/2 HOURS. FLAMES BEGAN COMING OUT FROM UNDER HOOD AND WAS PUT OUT WITH FIRE EXTINGUISHER. WHEN THE HOOD WAS OPENED THE AREA AROUND BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR HAD COMPLETELY BURNED AWAY. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 FORD F150. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH THE FUEL TANK FELL OFF OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED THE STRAPS ON THE FUEL TANK WERE COVERED WITH RUST. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE HAD TO CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT BECAUSE GASOLINE WAS SPILLING ONTO THE HIGHWAY. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO HIS HOME. THE CONTACT REPLACED THE FUEL TANK, FUEL LINE AND STRAPS. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 200,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 200,800.

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INSPECTED BY A DEALER OR A MECHANIC AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 127,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED WITH THE REPLACEMENT OF THE FUEL TANK STRAPS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 200,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 148,000.
