NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2012 Ford F-150. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The contact owns a 2012 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving 70 MPH, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted into first gear, and the rear wheels locked up, causing the vehicle to stop in a ditch. A dealer was contacted. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and notified the contact of a Customer Satisfaction Program; however, the Customer Satisfaction Program had closed. No additional assistance was provided. The approximate failure mileage was 95,000.
Driver's side stationary rear window (three window w/slider) shattered while driving.
Wrench light comes on and down shifts without warning. Very scary when on the highway at 70mph
Ford is aware these trucks have a problem with their transmissions and are making repairs extremely difficult for me. I am very lucky not to have been in an accident in this truck as it will get stuck in gear when turning out into a busy highway because of their transmissions sensor and lead frame issues. The government has addressed this issue to some degree, but Ford has already once refused the repair because they couldn't replicate the problem. I almost got into a severe accident last week because of the problem they know the trucks have. These trucks should be fixed correctly and people on the road shouldn't have to worry about getting people severely injured or killed over a problem with their 6r80 transmissions that should have been fixed. Please do what you can to help Ford do the right thing and get these repaired quickly.
Goodyear wrangler kevlar LT 275/65R18 Bought 4 from Sullivan tire in bridgewater ma in 2019. Has normal average treadwear. Noticed my drivers side front tire kept losing air didn't notice any nails so i removed for inspection and noticed the inside sidewall peeling apart. I took pictures and took it into Sullivan where they tried to say it was my fault due to tire shine. Im still dealing with sullivan I wanted to report because this can kill somebody.
Electronic Power Assist System failure while driving down the road. It became very difficult to operate the vehicle. If anyone but myself were operating the truck it would have resulted in an accident.
The contact owns a 2012 Ford F-150. The contact stated while using the defroster, the rear windshield shattered. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to a glass repair shop and was informed that the rear windshield needed to be replaced. The contact called and notified the local dealer of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 91,000.
Throttle body - Truck stalls, reduced power
The contact owns a 2012 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while his son was driving 30 MPH, the vehicle downshifted independently. The contact stated that the power train warning light was illuminated. The contact was able to park on the side of the road and restart the vehicle however, the vehicle continued to experience failure. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer and the dealer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V248000 (Power Train) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 105,000.
On Friday, October 29, 2021, at about 6:30 PM, I was driving my 2012 Ford F150 Super Crew 4WD Platinum PU down a two lane highway at about 60 MPH, when I heard a distinct, loud "pop" or "bang", so loud it scared me. I initially thought I had been shot at or a decent sized rock had struck the roof of my PU with some good velocity. After the initial shock, I didn't notice anything being different. It was dark outside. After a few moments, I had no idea what had happened, but moved on. The next morning, I got in my truck and immediately noticed the passenger side of the back window was shattered. I inspected the window and clearly saw a heat signature deformation in the lower left corner of the right pane. This was also the initial spot of the shattering. The rear window defroster system had shorted out and burned up. From Photo #4 I am not convinced there was not an actual fire at some point. I quickly found forums that document reports of Ford vehicles doing this for well over 10 years. I added my story to the top one. https://fordauthority.com/2017/12/another-ford-f-150-owner-claims-the-rear-window-shattered-despite-no-impact/ https://www.f150forum.com/f118/another-rear-window-shattered-426302/ I went to the Ford dealership and had them look at it. I also had the local Sheriff's Office look at it. I chatted, emailed and called Ford HQ twice. I sent them these links. I was repeatedly told, "I'm sorry. There are no programs (Recalls or TSBs) to help you." My glass repair place does not want to work on it ($825) since it is not a glass problem and replacing the glass does not guarantee it won't just happen again. I am thankful I did not startle worse than I did. This easily could have caused me to lose control of my vehicle at highway speeds, not to mention the danger to passengers of shattering glass. My daughter routinely sits in the back, right next to this window. I will keep things as is as long as I can for inspection. Consumer stated to date, Ford has refused to acknowledge thi
Driving all of a sudden engine will downshift.
1. Speed sensor failed 2. When driving, speedometer stops working and the truck slows down all of a sudden which could cause someone to rear end me. 3. Yes the problem has been reproduced and confirmed by independent service dealer 4. No the vehicle has not been inspected by anyone other than the independent service dealer 5. No warning lamps, etc prior to the failure
Vehicle shut off while driving approx 30 mph making a slight right hand turn. Thus losing all throttle, power steering and power brakes. Vehicle error message is low oil pressure but oil level is checked out to be good. Based on online research the culprit is an overheated fuel pump fuse and a very common issue.
Anytime I idle/ idle low/ slow down the vehicle shuts off! In intersections, drive-thru's, stop signs. Then it gives me a low oil pressure warning.
While driving at approximately 60mph my vehicle shifted into first gear and aggressively skidded into oncoming traffic with my wife and two daughters in the truck. After regaining control, I drove it to my residence where the issue was repeated two times at slower speeds. After calling my local Ford dealership, they stated that there were two open recalls relating to the issue, 19S07 relating to the PCM and 19N01 relating to the leadframe. Apparently the two issues have resulted in many crashes and multiple fatalities. 19S01 was completed on my vehicle in 2019, however they did not mention or fix the leadframe issues in 19N01 despite it already being an open recall with national attention. I did not receive a recall letter or notification despite the serious nature of the issue. While I was within the warranty window for the leadframe at the time of service for the first recall, I have recently driven past 150,000 miles. The same Ford dealership stated that while the two recalls would apply, they were under a 10 year 150,000 mile warranty. I am within 10 years, but at 163,000 miles. After discussions with my dealership and two customer service representatives at your call center, I am extremely disappointed to hear that this known safety issue will not be fixed on a 9 year old vehicle because I am 10,000 miles outside of your warranty issue.
Steering becomes hard, almost impossible when a “Power Steering Assist Fault” displays on in-dash information screen. It happens simultaneously with a very audible chime and instantaneous loss of power steering. It has happened randomly all at low speeds and doesn’t happen every time the vehicle is driven. Dealership was contacted and will be dropping vehicle off for them to diagnose and repair. The danger is sudden loss of vehicle control due to “fault.” Steering become almost impossible. When “fault” occurs, I have been able to regain steering with turning the vehicle off, then on. Steering then returns.
The safety recall for my 2012 Ford F-150 that was to fix a sudden downshift on the truck did not work. From what I have read; the root cause for this random downshifting is identified by as this: a defective bulk head connector. When trans fluid leaks past the bulk head sealing rings it can disrupt the transmission's output speed sensor signal. When this happens the ECM automatically downshifts to second or first gear. to fix this issue Ford released a TSB that was comprised of a software update designed to prevent the ECM from automatically downshifting when the loss of signal occurs (I don't know what other conditions have to occur simultaneously). This fix is less labor intensive (thus cheaper) than replacing the actual bulk head connector assembly. Ford has released a revised part number for the bulkhead connector as well. The sudden downshift which has always been prevalent on this truck continues to happen, it’s a safety concern that is going to cost me a lot of money to fix that they should be fixing instead of programming a software update that is a temporary fix.
The electrical steering failed causing the vehicle to be unable to steer. A clear safer issue. Almost caused a collision.
Sept 1 I was driving to the highway going to work when I felt a small jolt in my steering wheel. I thought it was a bump in the street and thought nothing of it. When I got off of work, and was leaving the parking lot I felt the same small jolt (almost like a pulling sensation in the steering wheel). When I was driving home doing around 70mph I get a message message on my dash (power steering needs maintenance immediately or something of the sorts) and a seconds after my steering column seizes up while i'm driving. My truck is well maintained and I do not do any off roading. The problem was sudden and could of been fatal. Fortunately I was able to pull of the road before I got hurt. After doing some reading this is a very common problem that ford has with there f150s, but ford has not announced a recall yet.
Vehicle sat idle in garage for two months. Started vehicle and brake pedal went to floor and was very soft. A warning was displayed on the instrument panel showing low brake fluid. Noting that master cylinder reservoir was almost empty I purchased a pint of DOT 3 brake fluid which I added to reservoir to "MAx" fill line. Started vehicle, brakes pumped up to a normal pedal pressure, took for a short test drive slowly testing brakes. All seemed normal at that time. Approximately 3 hours later I started vehicle, again noting that the brake pedal went to the floor. Checked the reservoir and found it almost empty again. Looked under vehicle and found no indication of fluid in any of the four corners by the wheels nor under the master cylinder. It is my belief that the fluid is leaking into the brake booster a problem which was addressed in a Safety Recall 20S31 issued by Ford Motor Company for a series of vehicles which although does not include my vehicle I believe that this issue is directly related and could also cause serious injury and/or damage if not repaired. I will have this issue fixed at my expense, however, I would be interested to learn if any other 2012 vehicles have experienced this problem.
Over a couple years had several occasions where the air bag light came on. First time was in 2017 and several times through 2021. See repair reports. Sometimes the light went out on its own, sometimes the dealer couldn’t find anything and cleared the fault or just cleaned the contacts. Finally in August 2021 the light came on and stayed on and the dealer had to replace the Restraint Control Module. It was unclear if the air bag system was functional over these numerous faults and months. Very expensive repair.
When driving, vehicle will drop from 50 mph to 0, causing a sudden stop. Vehicle then will struggle to get out of first gear, and whine. Vehicle will not move in the speedometer, and will not shift past first gear.
The contact's son owns a 2012 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while her son was driving 65 mph, the vehicle unexpectedly downshifted into first gear. The brakes locked up causing the vehicle to slide on the road. The dealer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact's son to drive the vehicle until the scheduled appointment. The dealer later informed the contact's son that the mileage was over the 150,000 miles warranty coverage and the repair would not be covered. The contact stated that when the failure first occurred, the mileage was below the 150,000 miles. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was relating the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 19V075000 (Power Train). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that they would callback within 24 to 48 hours. The failure mileage was 149,750.
On July 22, 2021 I was traveling at approximately 45 mph on a three lane divided highway when the automatic transmission shifted from 6th gear to 1st gear, locking the rear wheels and initiating a skid. Moments later the transmission shifted back to 6th causing a loud bang and severe jolt to the vehicle and propelling it forward. The wrench light came on and the speedometer dropped to zero (even thought the vehicle was moving forward) and the passenger airbag lights came on. I was able to avoid colliding with the vehicles around me and was able to pull off the road and turn the vehicle off, but it was a near-miss and could have caused a major traffic accident. I took the vehicle into the local Ford dealer for repair and was notified that the vehicle is subject to a "Customer Satisfaction Program 19N01". The notification letter is attached and ignores any risk to driver safety and consequently Ford downplay the entire event. In addition, the repair is likely to take at least to the end of August because the required parts are on back order. Ford do not seem to care that this is a safety problem and are unwilling to help with either identifying spare parts or providing a back-up vehicle (rental or loaner).
After starting the vehicle and putting it into drive, the vehicle would not shift out of 1st gear. RPS revved nearly to red-line and even when I removed my foot from the gas pedal, the revs remained high. Even when underway, the speedometer registered 0 MPH and the odometer was showing only dashes "-------------". After a short time, the wrench symbol appeared on the display and the airbag warning icon was illuminated. I pulled over and turned the truck off and back on and it operated normally. No error codes were stored and my service shop will not work on it since it is not happening all the time. On a different occasion about a week ago, I was driving up a residential street incline and the truck was not shifting from 2nd gear. I pressed the accelerator more and all of sudden the truck shifted extremely rough jerking myself and my passenger unsafely. After this the truck stuck in gear, displayed the wrench symbol and illuminated the air bag warning icon. This looks to be highly related to Ford Safety Recall 19S07 but my truck is not covered by this recall.
The contact owns a 2012 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving on several occasions at various speeds, the vehicle downshifted and would not shift into any other gear. During one failure, the air bag warning light illuminated, and the instrument panel stopped working. The vehicle was steered to the side of the road and restarted. On one occasion the vehicle took approximately five attempts to restart. Additionally, the contact stated that while driving at approximately 40 MPH the powertrain malfunction indicator light illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 118,000.

The contact owns a 2012 Ford F-150. The contact’s husband stated while driving approximately 60 MPH, the vehicle unexpectedly downshifted from 6th to 3rd gear. The contact stated that the power train warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer and diagnosed with needing the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and informed the contact that they were unable to assist. The failure mileage was approximately 156,543.
GOING DOWNHILL LAST NIGHT IN 5 PM TRAFFIC AND MY TRUCK SHIFTED INTO 1ST GEAR BY ITSELF AND WOULD NOT SHIFT INTO A DIFFERENT GEAR. I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED LET ALONE SOMEONE COULD HAVE REARENDED ME AND THERE WOULD BE A SAFETY ISSUE LET ALONE MAYBE ANOTHER DEATH. I PUT ON MY FLASHERS RIGHT AWAY, PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, SHUT THE TRUCK OFF FOR A FEW MINUTES. GATHERED MY THOUGHTS TURNED IT BACK ON AND DROVE ON THE SHOULDER FOR A WAYS, AND THE TRUCK WENT INTO GEAR NO PROBLEM. THEN I HAD TO STOP AT THE STORE, SHUT THE TRUCK OFF, STARTED IT WHEN I GOT BACK IN AND IT WOULDN'T SHIFT OUT OF FIRST GEAR. AGAIN A MAJOR SAFETY HAZARD. NO WARNING LIGHTS OR MESSAGES - I DO HAVE VIDEO OF LAST NIGHTS OCCURRENCE. THERE ARE MANY FACETS TO THIS PROBLEM. I KNOW THAT THERE IS A CUSTOMER SAFETY NUMBER THAT IS RELATED TO THIS HOWEVER MY TRUCK HAS JUST OVER 150000 MILES. I TOOK IT INTO FORD THIS MORNING AND ALSO TALKED WITH NATIONAL FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY SAID 10 YEARS OR 150000 MILES. ACTUALLY 2 DIFFERENT REPRESENTATIVES TOLD ME 2 DIFFERENT THINGS, ONE TOLD ME IT IS COVERED AND THE 2ND TOLD ME IT IS NOT COVERED. MY TRUCK HAD 149000 MILES ON IT WHEN I BOUGHT IT, SHORTLY AFTER IT WAS STOLEN OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY, AND WHEN I GOT IT BACK IT HAD UMPTEEN THINGS WRONG WITH IT, SO IT HAS BEEN IN THE MECHANIC SHOP AND BODY SHOP MORE THAN I HAVE HAD IT. HAD I KNOWN THAT THERE WAS A SAFETY ISSUE I COULD HAVE HAD IT FIXED BEFORE IT WAS STOLEN.
The contact's wife owns a 2012 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle shuddered and vibrated while shifting from 3rd to 4th gear. Additionally, the contact stated that while driving 25-35 MPH, the transmission failed to downshift and was stuck in 4th or 5th gear; requiring that the accelerator pedal be depressed harder for the transmission to shift out of the gear. The contact stated that the vehicle then responded by accelerating abruptly, nearly causing a crash. Additionally, the contact stated while driving 45 MPH, the vehicle shuddered while shifting from 3rd to 4th gear, and then shifted into 5th gear. The vehicle then downshifted into first gear unexpectedly, and the rear wheels locked-up, causing the vehicle to skid and to stop on the side of the road. The contact attempted to continue driving; however, the vehicle failed to shift out of first gear. The contact stated that he disconnected and reconnected the battery temporarily and was able to resume driving; however, the failure persisted. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was test-driven, and the failure was replicated. The mechanic provided videos and pictures of the transmission fluid leaking at the bellhousing. The vehicle was taken to the dealer several times with videos of the transmission leak, but the dealer informed the contact that the failure could not be duplicated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V075000 (Power Train); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the dealer for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 99,000.
Was driving on the highway when all of a sudden the wrench icon on my dash came up, airbag light, and my speedometer dropped to 0. My truck also dropped a gear and slowed down so much that I was almost rear ended by a semi truck. I took it to my dealer to see if there was a recall but apparently the recall for the lead frame, expired for my truck. I personally think that there should be no expiration on this recall because it's a safety issue and someone could get hurt or killed because Ford doesn't wanna take care of their mistake.
Had recall completed on my vehicle back about a year ago but vehicle is now doing the same thing it was again dropping into first gear which causes major problems CV joint is going bad because of the sudden stop Betty shaft what bothers me is I've already had three called done and it's happening again my concerns are now that my transmission is older what's dresses and putting on my transmission I have my transmission serviced are you 50 to 60 thousand miles oil changes regularly
I have a 2012 f150 platinum eco boost When starting vehicle in morning I would here a strange noise coming from the front driver side, now I leave out of driveway after starting and when I apply brakes the truck will not stop like there is no brake pressure and feels like anti locks are on, I have to sit for a couple minutes and then they work but they only appear to work manually I have to push brake pedal hard, I tried diagnosing like the forum says I put my foot on brake and start vehicle, the brake pedal stays hard and does not move, they say if this happens it is the brake vacuum pump. There is a recall 15N05 on my year vehicle but Ford says my vehicle isn’t covered it’s under the mileage and the correct year, I have to buy the pump myself, why isn’t Ford honoring the recall I just ordered part and if needed will upload the invoice later
Leadfrane was not replaced even though it poses a safety hazard on Highway. When taken before the ten year make no mention was made to correct problem. Only a reprogramming was done and dealer states that it may or may not work as many trucks have failed on highway speeds with the programming. This is scary situation.
Transmission lead frame failure multiple times. Milage past the 180k so dealership would not repair defective part under previous 6SR80 recall. Paid out of pocket for known defective Ford part.
OPEN RECALL HAS NOT BEEN FIXED.

WHEN VEHICLE STARTS HAS WRENCH LIGHT ON, TRACADVANCE LIGHT ON, AND AIRBAG LIGHT ON. TRUCK WANTS TO CALL 911 ABOUT 1 MINUTE AFTER STARTED. AUTO SHOP DIAGNOSTIC HAS AIR BAG MODULE IS NOT RESPONDING. MY FAMILY AND I HAVE BEEN BUYING FORDS FOR YEARS AND FORD HAS TREATED US VERY WELL. I BOUGHT MY FIRST BRAND NEW CAR FOR MY WIFE IN 2016 AND WAS A FORD EXPLORER. DESPITE OF THE ISSUES THAT THAT VEHICLE HAS HAD FORD HAS ALWAYS DONE THE RIGHT THING AND HAS TAKEN CARE OF THEM. MY GRANDFATHER OWNED A FORD DEALERSHIP WHEN I WAS A CHILD AND GREW UP RIDING IN FORD VEHICLES. THIS AIRBAG MODULE THAT WENT BAD IS NOT A PART THAT CAR WEAR OUT. FROM MY RESEARCH OTHER 2012 F150'S LIKE MINE HAS THE SAME ISSUE AND SOME HAVE A RECALL ON THEM FOR THIS. IT IS A VERY EXPENSIVE PART THAT I THINK IS FAULTY BY MANUFACTURE. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING AROUND IN THE TRUCK WITH MY KIDS WITH THIS MODULE BAD AND AM NOT SURE IF IT IS SAFE OR NOT. PLEASE ADVISE HOW TO PROCEED. THANKS

WHILE DRIVING (AT ANY SPEED AND FROM ANY GEAR) TRUCK FREQUENTLY, UNPREDICTABLY EXHIBITS FOLLOWING BEHAVIOR: - SPEEDOMETER NEED DROPS TO ZERO REGARDLESS OF ACTUAL SPEED. - TRUCK LOSES PROPER SHIFTING FUNCTIONALITY. EVENT HAS OCCURRED A DOZEN TIMES OR SO SINCE 12 DECEMBER 2020, USUALLY AT SPEEDS AND GEARING ABOVE THIRD. TYPICAL RESULT IS TRUCK WILL NOT DOWNSHIFT BELOW THIRD GEAR, BUT ON ONE OCCASION EVENT OCCURRED AT A STOP LIGHT, AND GEARING ABOVE FIRST WOULD NOT ENGAGE - ODOMETER, TRIP METER, GAS MILEAGE AND OTHER DIGITAL INFORMATION DISPLAYS NULL OUT TO DASHES INSTEAD OF SHOWING NUMBERS - A WRENCH SYMBOL APPEARS ON RIGHT SIDE OF THE DIGITAL DISPLAY. SYMBOL SOMETIMES REMAINS FOR THE DURATION OF THE EVENT, AND SOMETIMES GOES AWAY. - SOMETIMES THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT APPEARS, SOMETIMES NOT - AIRBAG LIGHT ILLUMINATES IF I TURN THE TRUCK OFF, REMOVE THE KEY, AND THEN RE-START, THE TRUCK TEMPORARILY RETURNS TO NORMAL FUNCTION, WITH NO INDICATION EVENT OCCURRED (CHECK ENGINE LIGHT NOT ON, ETC). TRUCK OPERATES NORMALLY UNTIL IT HAPPENS AGAIN, OFTEN WITHIN MINUTES (OR EVEN MOMENTS) OF THE RESET, BUT SOMETIMES NOT AGAIN FOR THE DURATION OF A 20 OR 25 MINUTE TRIP. TRUCK IS NOT SAFE TO OPERATE IN THIS CONDITION AND I HAVE NOW STOPPED DRIVING IT. I HAVE BEEN STUCK AT A RED LIGHT ON A GRADE WITH A LOAD IN THE BED AND TRAFFIC BEHIND ME, UNABLE TO MOVE WHEN THE LIGHT CHANGES, BECAUSE FIRST AND SECOND GEAR WILL NOT ENGAGE, AND THIRD GEAR LACKS TORQUE TO GET MOVING. ONCE, AFTER ACCELERATING FROM A STOP, THE EVENT OCCURRED AND THE TRUCK WAS STUCK IN FIRST GEAR, CAUSING UNSAFE TRAFFIC CONDITION (FOR ME AND OTHERS) WHILE I ATTEMPTED TO PULL OVER SAFELY THROUGH TRAFFIC. IN ADDITION TO PHOTOS SUBMITTED HEREWITH, I HAVE VIDEO CLIPS SHOWING OCCURRENCE AT HIGHWAY AND AT SURFACE STREET SPEEDS. CONTACT ME IF YOU WANT THEM.
AS I WAS DRIVING MY TRUCK WENT CRAZY ON MY DASH EVERY ELECTRONIC READING WAS WACK OUT OF COMMISSION SPEED WENT TO ZERO ON MY ODOMETER AND FROM SIX SPEED TO 1 MY TRUCK WOULD NOT RUN ANY FASTER BUT MY RPM GUAGE WAS SKY HIGH UNTIL I REALIZED I HAD TO PUT MY TRUCK IN NEUTRAL TO PULL OVER TO TURN OFF MY TRUCK.
THE VEHICLE WILL JERK WHEN DOWN SHIFTING ON HIGHWAY. THE JERK FEELS LIKE A CAR ACCIDENT AS IF REAR ENDED WITH A LOUD CLUNK.
