WHILE RECALL WAS PUT OUT AND REPAIRED IM CURRENTLY EXPERIANCING THE SAME ISSUE WHERE THE TRUCKS SHIFTING DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY, SLAMS GEARS, CAUSING A JOLT AND SEEMS THE TRANSMISSION TO SLIP.
When driving home from work at night on the highway in a 55mph zone my truck lost all power and the ability to accelerate. While on the highway began to hit the gas a bit more and saw the gears go from gear 10 all the way down to 1st gear at 55mph. Not sure what was happening and the truck began to “gear hunt” (attempting to find a gear that would give power). The truck gave me a check engine light and a alert of reduced power. I started to smell a burning smell in the vehicle and someone behind me was flashing me with their high beams to attempt to alert me something was wrong. I rolled the window down and looked in my mirror and saw white bellowing smoke being produced from behind the vehicle causing other drivers to either change lanes or slow down so they can see. I used what speed I had left from going down a on ramp to pull into a parking spot behind a building on the main road and had to call for a tow truck very late at night after my shift. I had the vehicle towed to that into the service department of a certified Ford dealership. After a few days of waiting for a response on the diagnosis of the vehicle, they stated that the transmission had blown and needed a replacement.
Transmission failure, unhealthy engine burning/consuming oil, emissions system/catalytic converter failure all before 100,000 miles.
*THE COMPONENT IN QUESTION IS THE TRANSMISSION "10R80". *AT RISK IS THAT TRUCK STOPS OR LOSES SPEED IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING. IT IS ESPECIALLY DANGERS WHEN GOING THRU A 4 WAY STOP AND TRUCK ALMOST COMES TO A STOP BECAUSE IT HAS NO SPEED AND HAVE ENCOUNTERD CLOSE CALLS TO BE HIT OR T BONED BY OTHER VEHICLES. *THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN ON ONGOING DISPUTE WITH CONSUMERS AND FORD ABOUT THE EXTREME PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION THAT INCLUDE HARSH SHIFTING, JERKING,HESITATION, CONSTANT SUDDEN DOWNSHIFTS,DIFFICULTY SHIFTING GEARS, AND EVEN AN OCCASIONAL LOSS OF POWER WHILE IN MOTION. OTHER DESCRIPTIONS THAT I EXPERIENCE IS NOTICEABLE LURCHES DURING GEAR CHANGES *I RECENTLY PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE AND I WAS FULLY UNAWARE OF IT PROBLEMS NOR WAS IT MENTIONED TO ME BY THE USED CAR SALESMAN AND MANAGER THAT THEY HAD A TRUCK IN THEIR LOT WITH EXTREME TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. *AT FIRST PURCHASED ([XXX]) THERE WAS NO WARNING SIGNS BUT MAYBE AFTER A MONTH OR SO IS WHEN THE TRUCK SHOWED A "WRENCH" SYMBOL ON THE DASH AS TO SHOW THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM. BUT SOMEHOW IT RESETS EVERYTIME YOU TURN OFF TRUCK AND RESTART AS IF SHOWING NO PROBLEM EXISTS. I HAVE LEARNED TO DEAL WITH IT SINCE THAN BUT NOW IT IS JUST GETTING WORSE. *I HAVE NOT TAKEN IT TO THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE I AM NOT READY TO PAY FOR A PROBLEM THAT (I AM NOW FULLY AWARE) FORD HAS KNOWN ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND HAS NOT TAKEN THE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS OR REMEDIES FOR CONSUMERS THAT OWN THEIR PRODUCT TO GET THIS FIXED BEFORE A SERIOUS/DEADLY INCIDENT OCCURS *MAY YOU PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS EXTREME KNOWN PROBLEM BECAUSE AT TIMES I FEAR FOR MYSELF, MY FAMILY AND EVEN THE DRIVING COMMUNITY FOR THEIR SAFETY BECAUSE OF WHAT MY TRUCK MAY DO OR NOT DO WHILE I AM DRIVING THIS UNSAFE VEHICLE IN OUR PUBLIC ROADWAYS/HIGHWAYS. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The transmission on this vehicle regularly hesitates, lurches and shifts gears unexpectedly. I have had multiple incidents of not being able to accelerate without a delay while in traffic and once the transmission downshifted incorrectly on the freeway which nearly caused me to lose control of the vehicle. The unexpected lack of acceleration while in live traffic and the erratic gear shifting on the highway is a safety hazard for me and for other drivers on the road.
WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY TODAY, I NEEDED TO ACCEL QUICKLY TO AVOID BEING IN THE BLIND SPOT OF ANOTHER TRUCK AS I WAS MERGING ONTO A DIFFERENT HIGHWAY. AFTER GETTING PAST THE TRUCK, I LET OFF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, BUT THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO SPEED UP. WHEN THIS HAPPENED, I ASSUMED THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS SOMEHOW TRYING TO RESUME SO I TAPPED THE BRAKES TO CANCEL IT, BUT NOTHING HAPPENED. I THEN PUT ON BRAKES, BUT IT WAS SIMPLY FIGHTING THE ENGINE AS THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. I THEN TRIED PRESSING BOTH THE CANCEL BUTTON AND THE OFF BUTTON ON MY CRUISE CONTROL, BUT THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. BY THIS TIME I WAS EASILY UP TO ABOUT 85 MPH AND HAD NOW OTHER CHOICE THAN TO PUT THE TRUCK IN NEUTRAL. I LEFT IT IN NEUTRAL FOR ABOUT 3 OR 4 SECONDS AND THEN PUT IT BACK INTO DRIVE AND THE ACCELERATION PROBLEM WAS RESOLVED. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A VERY BAD SITUATION FOR AN INEXPERIENCED DRIVER. I PLAN ON STOPPING AT THE DEALER WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE LAST YEAR AND REPORT IT TO THEM AS WELL.
The vehicle hesitates while speeding up. This hesitation is dangerous in situations like entering and exiting the highway from an off-ramp, where acceleration is necessary to merge with traffic. The vehicle hesitation to accelerate is unpredictable. I tired several times to upload documentation as jpeg files. Each time I get Failed to Upload message. Consumer stated vehicle's hesitation has occurred several times and vehicle has not been repaired.
My truck's gas pedal does not always accelerate the truck. By playing lightly with the accelerator I can usually keep the truck accelerating. If I press the accelerator to the floorboard, the truck just stops, so I never do that. Maybe 3 times in 4 years. Several times I have been on a freeway and my truck comes to a complete stop. Very Scary! My truck has had this behavior since I first bought it. Planet Ford told me repeatedly that it was due to the way I drove. Called Ford and they were no help. I finally gave up.
WHEN DRIVING IN ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL THE VEHICLE WILL AGREESIVELY DECELERATE WHEN PASSING ON THE LEFT SIDE OF A LARGE PROFILE VEHICLE. THE GREATER THE SPEED DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO VEHICLES THE GREATER THE RATE OF DECELERATION. IF THE SPEED DIFFERENCE IS ABOUT 35 MPH OR GREATER THE COLLISION AVOIDANCE SYSTEM WILL ACTIVATE. THIS IS POTENTIALLY VERY DANGEROUS ON A CROWDED INTERSTATE WITH FOLLOWING VEHICLES VERY CLOSE.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford F-150. The contact stated while driving approximately 20-50 MPH, the vehicle would make abnormal clunking sounds while depressing or releasing the accelerator pedal. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the driveshaft was taken apart and was lubricated; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who informed the contact that the failure was normal. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA. The failure mileage was approximately 5,000.
Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA. A high complaint count may reflect vehicle popularity, not defect severity. Data sourced from NHTSA public records.
